FROM THE PUBLISHER I've said it before, and I'll say it again—our Women in Business issue is my favorite issue each year, and 2024 is no exception.

The stories of success achieved by overcoming incredible obstacles are awe-inspiring, and the humility shown in light of those successes is equally humbling. There's just something truly special about the content and individuals profiled in this annual endeavor.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to reach out to many of our past team members for this issue and get an update on where they are in their lives. It was such a pleasure to hear what each one is currently doing—some are raising families, others climbing corporate ladders, and many are operating businesses of their own. To say the experience was long overdue would be a colossal understatement. Every conversation was a reminder of how the magazine arrived at where it is today—through the hard work and pooled efforts of so many individuals, each bringing their unique talents and passions together to create something we could all be proud of each month. I'm excited to say the first spread in the magazine—on pages 10 and 11—is dedicated to updating all of you on what each of those wondrous women is doing. I'm also looking forward to those periodic check-ins becoming a consistent part of our content in future issues.

This issue is full of remarkable stories I know you'll love. From Anecia Johnson's philanthropic organization Amma Culture to the heartwarming story of our Cool Kid Arya Pocock—who has continued persevering in light of terrible circumstances to become the Boys and Girls Club of the North Valley's first California State Youth of the Year—there is something in this issue for everyone. Each story is a testament to the power women possess and a salute to their marvelous contributions to our community.

I hope you take the information in this issue and use it to support woman-owned businesses this month. We are lucky to have so many in Butte County, and each provides something truly special to the fabric of our towns. Thank you for your continued readership, and I hope you have as much fun reading this issue as we did putting it together for you.

Currently, I'm raising a six-year-old ninja warrior and a four-year-old articulate diva. At Ferguson, I manage a substantial e-commerce segment which has been a challenge and an accomplishment. I adore the people I work with and have learned that no matter where I go, I will find a way to make my work family a true family. On the side, I am a fitness coach and sweaty yogi. Regardless of where business takes me, I will always be a gypsy, beach lover, consumer of inappropriate humor, and inquisitor of human experience.

Life has been busy since my days at UL! My family and I now live in the Redding area where my husband, Scott, and I grew up. In 2020, I earned my multiple-subject teaching credential and began teaching second grade. We have two energetic boys, eight-yearold Liam, and three-year-old Callen.

Scott recently started a new career in law enforcement. Whenever I have free time, I continue my passion for photography. The memories from Chico, especially my time at UL, will always hold a special place in my heart!

Following my time at Upgraded Living, I entered the exciting world of education!

As an art teacher, I’ve taught high school visual art, ceramics, and graphic design.

As my teaching practice developed, I went on to pursue an additional multiplesubject credential and a Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on curriculum and instruction. I continue to be passionate and committed to serving my community through arts engagement and advocacy.

I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since I worked for the amazing team at Upgraded Living. Today, I’m taking all the wisdom I’ve acquired through my career in marketing, and my personal journey in mothering, to build something new that will drastically improve the postpartum experience for moms. Stay tuned!

I spent many years as a staff photographer at Upgraded Living. I continue to enjoy capturing special moments, and I strive to create a unique perspective on ordinary objects, people or places. In an effort to showcase other local artists, I curate new art exhibits each month at Naked Lounge, a locally owned cafe in Downtown Chico located at 118W 2nd Avenue.

I am a writer living in Chico who reads indiscriminately and loves antiques, folk art, flowers, and beautiful weather.

I am a banker from 9-5, but writing is my first love, and I am grateful for the opportunity to write fiction and the occasional profile for Upgraded Living.

I am married to my best friend, and we have two very silly terriers aged 9 and 13.

Five years ago, I packed my bags and moved to Brooklyn, New York.

Before that, I had traveled to nearly 30 countries but always used Chico as my home base. Finally settling down, my home is now a live / work studio with plants, sunlight, and creativity in every corner. I work as a portrait & fashion photographer—a dream that started when I was 16 years old and attending Inspire School of Arts & Sciences.

I finished my second master's degree at Chico State in 2017 and now work as an English instructor at Butte College teaching creative writing, composition, and critical thinking. I also works as the Academic Support Coordinator in the Recreation, Hospitality, and Parks Department at Chico State. When I'm not working or teaching, you can find me taking hikes in Upper Park, walks downtown, or napping.

I’m getting married to my soulmate, Seth, in Santa Cruz this June! I'm still writing, of course—whether it’s on my blog, Blush and Avocados, or for my fulfilling job as a content specialist at VSP Vision. We were fortunate to purchase a bungalow in East Sacramento last year. I love backpacking, surfing, and gardening whenever possible, along with visiting Chico often—it always feels like home.

I work in office administration and medical billing while focusing on two passion-projects: one manuscript about the history and recipes of a pioneer family in Cohasset, CA, and a second manuscript about the settlers of West Virginia. Currently, I am enjoying traveling across America and learning from knowledgeable people as they grant me special access to personal archives, library collections, and historical landmarks. It's a life goal of mine to never stop learning!

I'm Mom to Kinsley-8, Garrett-7, and Kennedy-5. My superpower is juggling, and I adore chatting over coffee about culture, reading, and traveling. I pride myself on knowing community events and sharing useful tips with friends like their own personal Alexa—it's part of my commitment to bringing people together. I'm a connector with a heart as big as my smile, and to me, there are no strangers–only friends I haven't met!

My jobs include being a notary and a decade in foreign exchange, where I've hosted over 13 students and counting!

I joined Upgraded Living Magazine five years ago as a freelance writer and have also written for Growing Up Chico and Local Umbrella Media in San Diego. Before working as a freelancer, I taught wildlife biology and worked with lions, tigers, and bears (oh my) as a zookeeper. When I'm not writing, I'm usually traveling, adventuring with my husband and two daughters, or teaching my young German Shepherd, Scuba, that hummingbirds are not the enemy.

Samantha Marshall Director of Surgical Services

Samantha Marshall moved to Chico from Southern California when she was 12. A graduate of Pleasant Valley High School, she always knew she wanted to work in the healthcare field, and actively pursued it after high school. She began working for North Valley Eye Care and quickly worked her way up the ranks, eventually becoming Meriam Park Laser Center’s director of surgical services.

“We currently offer LASIK eye surgery and Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) surgery.” Samantha says, “LASIK is my favorite. The technology we use to perform the procedure is fascinating, and seeing patients’ faces once their procedure is completed is so rewarding! We are the only facility that offers this level of technology for refractive surgery and personalized patient care.”

Samantha enjoys working with a dedicated team in the incredible atmosphere that Meriam Park Laser Center provides. She looks forward to being on the cutting edge of eye care procedures and watching the new laser center grow in the years to come.

Vanessa Phanor

Lead Surgical Coordinator and LASIK Concierge

Originally from the Bay Area, Vanessa Phanor moved to Chico at the end of elementary school. She always wanted to work in healthcare, specifically in emergency services, but one ride-along in an ambulance changed her mind. She dove headfirst into natural resources and spent the next 10 years in that field before deciding she was ready for a change. She re-entered the healthcare industry but in a different capacity.

Now the lead surgery coordinator and LASIK concierge for Meriam Park Laser Center (MPLC), Vanessa coordinates and communicates with patients, walking them through the LASIK process from start to finish.

“I enjoy being a part of the before and after journey with our patients.” Vanessa says, “It’s an exciting and special experience! I’m really enthusiastic about this work, and I love assisting patients throughout the entire process. This is a completely lifechanging procedure for our patients, and every case is more exciting than the last. Our doctors are so passionate about the work they do and so dedicated to giving our patients the best possible outcome. Hearing and seeing the reactions of our patients after surgery is truly remarkable and a wonderful thing to be a part of.”

Vanessa feels MPLC is committed to innovation, and is excited about the continued implementation of new and cutting-edge technologies for better patient care. She sees herself becoming even more educated in LASIK technology so she can better educate patients on the latest technological options available to them.

Jessica Farrell Chief Design Officer

Originally from the Lake Almanor area, Jessica Farrell never planned to work in healthcare. Her passion for interior design led her to South Lake Tahoe, where she worked at a well-known design firm for many years before moving to Chico in 2006. When the housing market tumbled, and the recession hit, interior design jobs disappeared with them, but Jessica managed to find a job designing eye clinics, specifically focusing on the optical display areas. The position became her gateway job into vision healthcare. Jessica has now been with North Valley Eye Care and the Ridge Eye Care Group for 15 years and has designed over 30 eye clinics, both large and small. As the company’s chief design officer, she oversees its facilities department, designing and setting up all clinics.

“I absolutely love it!” Jessica says, “When we decided to create Meriam Park Laser Center (MPLC), I wanted it to feel like a spa but still showcase the most advanced laser that is currently available. We have the Alcon Refractive Suite, which I affectionately call the Cadillac of advanced lasers. It’s super impressive! Setting up MPLC required a quick turnaround, and we pulled it off in just 12 days. It was super fun and challenging at the same time. When designing a space like this, you want to establish a relaxing and state-of-the-art atmosphere. Creating a space where employees and patients enjoy visiting is always the ultimate goal.”

Jessica understands what’s needed to create a successful clinic and has the unique ability to visualize what a space needs to best accommodate visitors immediately. Perhaps more importantly, she can do it on a budget and at breakneck speed thanks to her incredible team, which includes Joe, Brian, Doug, and Bailey, along with their I.T. team of Brett and Tyler.

She says, “All the design and setup is fun and rewarding, but the cherry on top is that we are really making a difference in people’s lives. We’re blessed to hear their stories, and knowing that our work matters makes this job extra special.

In the next five years, I expect we will stay on the same trajectory of finding places desperately needing quality eye care and opening clinics to satisfy those needs.”

Lydia Castellanos Marketing Manager

Lydia Castellanos grew up in Chico with a love for media arts. Growing up, she made her own movies, vlogs, and podcasts, and was enthralled with graphic design—but it was mostly a hobby. When she was hired, she started in a different department but was continually drawn to marketing. She was given the opportunity to work on a project for the company with its marketing team and fell in love with the experience. The successful launch of that project opened the door for her to move into the marketing department, and she’s been there ever since.

“It’s nice to do the things you love to do as work.” Lydia says, “It’s even more rewarding to know that we make a difference in people’s lives.”

As Meriam Park Laser Center’s marketing manager, Lydia creates marketing campaigns for the entire company. She brings them to life with graphic design, social media, analytics, and more. Her favorite part of the experience is the opportunity to interview patients and hear their stories. She then gets to share it and help others start their journeys as well.

Since becoming marketing manager, Lydia has designed countless campaigns and helped further develop the company’s brands, including designing the logo and building the brand for Meriam Park Laser Center.

“It’s really cool to see something you created to go from paper to all over Chico.” Lydia says, “And this is just the beginning! We have the best technology in the North state, so that’s easy to market. I mean, why wouldn’t you go with the best? I’m excited to witness our future patients’ transformations and hear their stories. Everyone has a unique reason for wanting better vision. I love my craft, and I’m happy to be able to make a positive difference with it.”

Amy Aleck

Business Development Manager A Northern California girl through and through, Amy Aleck grew up in San Jose. She was deeply influenced by her mother, who dedicated 30 years as a nurse to working for the same physician in a primary care office. She spent her childhood in that office, working there through high school and college, committing healthcare to her DNA. Eventually, Amy moved north to Chico and graduated from Chico State. While on campus, she served as a tour guide, initially for academic credits but later out of a genuine passion for sharing all Chico offers prospective students.

Amy moved to Roseville after college but couldn’t stay away long. She joined the Meriam Park Laser Center (MPLC) team and is now their business development manager. In her current position, she promotes MPLC’s services, technologies, and medical expertise to the surrounding community. She develops relationships with referring physicians and represents MPLC by attending networking and community events throughout the county.

“With two decades of experience in medical sales, I bring a unique perspective on how successful medical practices can best serve their communities.” Amy says, “It is not solely about profit; it’s about clinicians who genuinely care about their services and enriching their community. As a representative of MPLC, I take pride in promoting our services to the local medical community and fostering partnerships that prioritize the wellbeing of the patients we collectively care for.”

For Amy, the team and the technology are the most rewarding parts of working at MPLC. She is delighted to know that every person there is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for every patient, and she feels it is an honor to be part of a team that operates the type of prestigious technology the doctors have invested in.

“I am excited for the lifelong professional partnerships that MPLC is developing and will continue to nurture over the years.” Amy says, “When you have a team as dedicated as these individuals, accompanied by unmatched technology, you know you are providing a service above and beyond to patients.”

Trinity Cronin

Lead Surgical Coordinator and LASIK Concierge

Born and raised in Paradise, Trinity Cronin grew up with a mother who was immersed in the ophthalmology field.

She would return home and tell Trinity the many exciting stories about how they helped people regain their sight and once again enjoy our beautiful world. Thanks to her mom’s inspiration, Trinity always planned on working in healthcare. She graduated from the Emergency Medicine program at Butte College. She began pursuing a career as an EMT after college but was too young to drive an ambulance when she finished the program. Though she never planned on working in ophthalmology, her mom’s stories left an indelible mark on her, and she decided to start working in ophthalmology at North Valley Eye Care to pass the time. Just like her mother before her, she too fell in love with the field and now has no plans to switch career paths. She’s right where she was meant to be.

Trinity recently joined the Meriam Park Laser Center (MLPC) team and now runs the Femtosecond Laser, which is responsible for suctioning onto the eye and cutting the corneal flap. She also assists with the sterile hand-off of instruments to the surgeons during LASIK and PRK procedures.

“It is amazing how far modern medicine has come to help people see clearly without glasses or contacts.” Trinity says, “I worked with our ophthalmologists for years before joining our LASIK team, so I came in with experience assisting our surgeons with procedures in the clinic. Because of this, I had an easier transition and more knowledge of what to expect. Now, I assist Dr. Mennucci at North Valley Eye Care on days I am not working with our LASIK team, so I get the advantage of meeting some of our LASIK patients before their operation and following them through their post-op visits. I most enjoy the look on each patient’s face when they sit up immediately after their surgery and realize they already see better than before. Hearing about our patients who are seeing 20/15 or 20/10 at their one-day post-op lights up my face! Anytime I am having a difficult day, I just remember all the people who no longer rely on glasses, and I love that I get to be part of that.”

Trinity looks forward to gaining more knowledge about providing the best patient care and assisting with improving the visual outcomes of many more people in our community. She couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of the MLPC family.

She also pointed out that the sanctuary is not a zoo, as some people think.

“This is a rescue foundation whose primary purpose is to rescue and provide rehabilitation and long-term care for both native and exotic wildlife,” said Roberta.

This “last resort” sanctuary specializes in caring for special needs animals. “We care for animals that need help,” she said. “These are special needs animals other facilities are not equipped to handle. We have veterinary care available 24 hours a day.” Additionally, many veterinarians provide services and learn how to care for unlikely species at the sanctuary.

The sanctuary currently provides care for over 100 animals, from local wildlife to exotic animals from around the world, including lions, ligers, tigers, many types of cats, bears, and exotic birds, to name a few.

There’s even an alligator that used to be a local pet. It requires a dedicated crew to take on the immense day-to-day operations.

There are six senior personnel, including Joan Gulla, assistant director; Angie Bracco, one of the senior staff members; and over 50 volunteers who rotate through. The key word here is VOLUNTEER. As Roberta said, “We are always in need of volunteers, whether it’s one four-hour shift for one day or multiple days during the week.”

While the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary and Educational Center requires many volunteers to operate, one person is its heart and soul—Roberta Kirshner. Her extensive work with exotic animal care and training in the motion picture industry prepared her for her biggest role in life: creator, director, and guru of the exotic animal sanctuary.

The Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation is named after her son, who died in a car accident on the Midway near Durham.

Roberta spoke of Barry, his love for animals, and the fact he was a stunt helicopter pilot in the popular TV series Airwolf. “Barry’s dream was to start his own sanctuary, and he cared for our first animal, Tigger the mountain lion, whose image is on our logo.”

To make it clear, Roberta emphasized that none of these animals can ever be reintroduced to the wild. “This is a last-stop destination for our animals. They receive veterinary care, abundant food and water, shelter and protection from predators, and

Angie Bracco, who provided a personal tour of the sanctuary, said, “We need volunteers to work at least four hours at a time any day of the week, from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.”

About 50 volunteers are needed to care for the animals. You can imagine just how much food and water it takes daily. Remember, not all of the animals are healthy, and 70% need special care. They have come from other facilities, been donated, or even left at the front gate. Many of the animals result from inbreeding in the United States because there’s only a certain amount of exotic animals in the country. An exception is there are more tigers in Texas than in India. Those animals are interbred regularly.

a place to age and grow old.” Angie echoed Roberta’s comments, “We will care for these animals until their last breath.”

No better person exists to be the caretaker of the sanctuary than Roberta Kirshner.

She seems to embody a modern-day Dr. Doolittle who can communicate with the animals and tell when they’re having problems. Her work with animals began as a child and continued through her work in the motion picture industry. She held cards for the Actor’s Screen Guild, the Screen Extras Guild, and the Stuntwoman Guild. Roberta primarily worked in providing for and handling animals of all types and performing stunts with wild and exotic animals.

Examples of her work include the TV shows Tarzan, Wagon Train, and The Guns of Will Sonnett. She worked in numerous movies such as Two Mules for Sister Sara, where she did the riding scenes for Shirley McClain. Roberta also doubled for Natalie Wood in "Love With a Proper Stranger.” She said, “Natalie Wood was one of the nicest people in Hollywood. If she received a gift from someone, she would turn around and give me a gift.”

Besides the entertainment industry, Roberta held many other positions. She was the director of the Tucker Wildlife Research Center in Canada, whose yearly budget was $5 million. She managed an equestrian center in Ukiah, CA, where she taught Western, English, and cross country horsemanship. She trained exotic animals at the Matsukas Cattle and Horse Ranch in Santa Ynez, CA. She even consulted for the Carlson Corporation to establish an equestrian center in Standbury, Canada, and the Lizard Rock Campground in North Carolina for a 200-acre youth camp. The number of Roberta’s and the sanctuary’s awards, accomplishments, and accolades are too numerous to mention.

Dr. Renee Tanabe Originally from Gridley, Dr. Renee Tanabe hails from a family of medical professionals—women who have each built successful careers in maledominated industries. Her mother, a doctor, was her primary role model, and her aunts—registered nurses and pharmacists—helped embolden her to believe she could be whatever she wanted. Growing up, Dr. Renee knew she wanted to do something in medicine and found dentistry to be the perfect fit.

a deeper understanding and experience.

It was a truly unique experience.” As a result, Dr. Renee graduated dental school at the age of 24 in 2010 as a full-fledged dentist, having personally completed 500+ fillings, nearly 40 root canals, and many other procedures.

“When I was in dental school, I was really homesick.” Dr. Renee said, “León was the size of L.A.; it was a really busy city. Living that lifestyle made me homesick for a slower pace, so I decided to move back and farm flowers with my family while I decided where I would work.”

Dr. Renee returned to Gridley and spent a couple of years completing her testing before joining up with Dr. Bruce Pope as an associate dentist. She worked there part-time, specializing in pediatric dentistry, and eventually picked up another part-time position at Hanosh & Hunter Dental Group. When a full-time position opened at Hanosh & Hunter, she jumped at the opportunity. “I had done a lot of easier work in my first job as a dentist.” Dr. Renee said, “I was doing fillings and crowns mainly, but I wanted to work on more physically and mentally challenging procedures.

Asked about being a woman in a maledominated industry, Dr. Renee says, “In my generation, there are more women who are doctors, dentists, etc. When I was a new dentist, many people hadn’t had a female dentist until they had me. I’m unconventional—I’m small, I like to laugh and joke around, and I have hot pink hair. I worked for an older dentist, and I had to work on earning respect. It’s been interesting trying to figure out my path in life as a female dentist. My mother has owned her own practice my entire life. I learned a lot of business etiquette from her, and she was always my role model. I would tell any woman looking for advice to do whatever their heart desires. Things are going to be difficult whether people are used to seeing a female or not. I love it when women take unconventional jobs.

She didn’t always know she wanted to be an esthetician; it took Marilyn some time, travel, and experience to bring that about. She left Chico and moved up to Washington. While living in Seattle, she says, “I got a professional facial, and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s what I want to do.’” Her path took her from Nordstrom’s flagship spa in Seattle to Beverly Hills and then to Santa Barbara before moving back to Chico to be with family. Marilyn shares, “I don’t think I would have ever wanted to take a 20

different path.” Her time at the celebritydotted spas was exciting and exposed her to various high-end products and treatments, allowing her to discover what she wanted in her own space. The benefit of that is I know what results I will get.” Marilyn says her salon isn’t one size fits all like many larger spas. She is free to use whatever products she feels are the best fit for each client and their specific skin issues.

In addition to being a licensed esthetician, Marilyn is a massage therapist with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition. She says, “I look at things from a holistic perspective,” and uses her additional certification in holistic nutrition to support her customers' skincare. Her acne clients come in for an in-depth consultation before starting the program, which consists of nutrition, lifestyle, and

skincare routines. Clearing acne in her young clients' skin is “very rewarding because it really affects every part of them.” She loves giving her anti-aging and relaxing spa facial clients treatments but shares, “When you affect kids and their self-esteem, it’s really inspiring.”

I happened to stumble upon one such conversation in a social media group where Mariah McNeal was sharing wisdom and genuine encouragement with the poster. It inspired me to reach out and see if I could join forces with her to educate even more women struggling with these feelings.

So, who is Mariah McNeal? Her decade of experience in Premier Designs taught her to style all types of people, connect on a deeper level, and listen to what people really needed to feel comfortable. A Parkside Kitchen Made new again Danny and Elizabeth Zepeda purchased their home on the northeast side of Chico near the entrance to Upper Bidwell Park in 2007. It was the perfect place to raise a growing family, as the house was tucked away on its own private road, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Built in 2002, the home was just on the cusp of changing trends from compartmentalized to open floor plans, and no place was it more apparent than in the kitchen. A giant wall blocked off the living room, and a peninsula protruded into the kitchen, creating an uncomfortable bottleneck for those passing through. The kitchen rang true to its age with all the usual suspects—honey oak cabinetry, white tile countertops, and beige grout. Still, the rest of the house was just what they wanted, so the two resolved to eventually remodel the kitchen to meet their needs.

In 2023, having read numerous remodel stories in Upgraded Living, the Zepedas decided to include New Again Kitchen Remodeling in the three bids they 28

obtained for their kitchen remodel. They found that New Again offered not only the best price but also the best process.

“One of the things that sold me on them was that they are a one-stop shop— their crew does everything from start to finish, saving us from having to deal with multiple subcontractors walking through the house that we didn’t know.” Danny said, “That familiarity of one crew and the sense of safety and security was a driving force behind our decision.”

Danny and Elizabeth visited New Again in March of 2023 and numerous times thereafter, consulting with New Again’s resident designer and store manager, Ric Powers, until they settled on a final set of options for their remodel. “We didn’t want to rush the process.” Elizabeth said, “Ric was so patient with us through the whole experience. We brought our kids along on most of the visits, and they were just so accommodating! I knew I wanted to remove the wall separating the kitchen from the living room, and Ric gave us

The New Again team arrived on February 28th and demolished the old kitchen, including the giant wall Elizabeth hated, and saved the cabinets so Danny could donate them at a later date. They tore down a return wall in the pantry area, making room for a wine cabinet, inset refrigerator, and microwave, before installing the new Parriott Wood whiteoak Shaker cabinets which included rollout shelves, a pull-out spice cabinet, lazy Susan, crown moldings, and selfclosing dovetail drawers. The cabinets were finished off with Jeffrey Alexander knobs in oil-rubbed bronze and a builtin wastebasket inside. Cyrus quartz countertops were installed atop the base cabinets with a Karran apron-front sink and a matching Karran Scottsdale faucet.

The gas line was extended and a new inceiling exhaust hood was installed above the stove. Finally, they tied the kitchen together with an Enchante/Charm tile backsplash installed by New Again’s tileexpert Victor Cabrerra and luxury vinyl flooring. The entire project took just over three weeks to complete.

“We would come in each day, and there would be something new to see.”

Elizabeth smiled, “It’s just beautiful. It’s the kitchen we wanted, and we even achieved the Spanish style we were looking for with the tile adding just a little bit of color. I love it!”

Danny continued, “It was really easy to work with Ric, and he guided us in what we needed to do. We would give him our opinions, and he would tell us what he thought and whether or not it would work. He has decades of experience, and talking to someone like that—you just know he won’t lead you astray. It really takes the pressure off of you knowing he’s done so many of these. We couldn’t be happier with the finished product!”

The Missing Pieces Solving Healthcare's Puzzle When tragedy cannot be avoided, preparation and medical science can minimize the loss. In March 2022, the driver of an SUV lost control and crashed through the front of a daycare. 19 preschoolers were asleep on the floor where the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. A mass casualty alert was relayed to the local trauma center 34

in Redding, California. Dr. Nerissa Prieto was one of the first doctors to arrive in the emergency room, where she and the ER physician on call planned the response to a complex problem: not only was this a mass casualty, an uncommon scenario that physicians may only see once in a lifetime, but this was a mass casualty of children—all different ages and different sizes, requiring different types of equipment, instruments, monitors. Dr. Prieto and her ER colleague coordinated the workflow in a crowded trauma bay, allowing nearly all the injured children to be treated simultaneously, by dozens of physicians, nurses, pharmacists,

and support staff. Thankfully, all the children survived.

During her 20-year career as an anesthesiologist and ICU physician, Dr. Prieto has learned to neatly classify patient conditions into two categories: a sudden unexpected change in health—as a result of an accident like the one at the daycare, for instance—versus the slow progression of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, neurological decline, and heart disease.

can predict or prevent. But there are plenty of devastating health outcomes that we can predict and prevent, and we get better at that every year that goes by. We, as physicians, will someday do a great job of educating patients about how to ‘predict and prevent’ with customized resources and personalized approaches to stay healthier longer. This will redefine how we treat illness, and how we age.”

A native of Washington D.C., Dr. Prieto received her Bachelor of Science in Biology/ Psychology from Wellesley College. She then spent several years as an investment banker on Wall Street. After receiving a Master’s degree in Neuroscience and Cell Biology from UCLA, she attended medical school and residency at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Her surgical rotations focused on pediatric reconstructive plastic surgery, but after one year of surgical residency, she pivoted into anesthesiology.

She explained that an anesthesiologist in the operating room must be able to treat a wide variety of conditions without consultation from other specialists, from high blood pressure, diabetes, and anxiety, all the way up to cardiac arrest, stroke, and respiratory failure. “So, in this one field, I really found a lot of satisfaction because of the breadth of expertise I needed to have across all areas of medicine,” Dr. Prieto said.

She completed her medical training in 2007

with a critical care fellowship at Stanford and has been practicing in the North State ever since.

Dr. Prieto has spent her career treating patients in life-threatening situations. She now uses that perspective as a unique basis for patient care in a totally different setting—a wellness clinic. She opened Privvy Modern Health in 2021 as a place where she could apply her “predict and prevent” concept with a special emphasis on the use of IV vitamin supplementation.

Her education in cell biology, experience with critically ill patients, and understanding of the latest medical and nutritional literature made her realize there was a place for aggressive vitamin supplementation in certain health conditions.

“Many IV therapy places are ‘hangover clinics’, but we can do so much more at Privvy. Aesthetic medicine, meanwhile, focuses on improving appearance, treating the visible effects of aging, and, in turn, positively impacting confidence, satisfaction, and self-esteem. Meanwhile, a growing body of scientific studies demonstrates that topical growth factors and peptides in new formulations lead to remarkable changes in skin structure and function.

She continued, “My patients are feeling healthier, and now they want to project that feeling outwardly. They want the outside world to see how healthy and vibrant they feel inside.” Regenerative aesthetics is her latest approach to providing solutions for healthy aging. generations. Her father, A.D. Johnson, worked at Butte College in the athletic department as an athletic trainer and de facto boss of the athletic department.

Everyone looked up to him out at Butte and trusted his guidance and opinion.

Her mother, long-time Chico Area Recreation District employee Dorothy Johnson, helped CARD plan and open the Chapman Neighborhood Center, where she became the facility manager.

As you might recognize, the center is now called the Dorothy F. Johnson Center.

Both of Anecia’s parents were well-known community members.

A.D. came to California in 1957 and eventually moved to Chico, where his brother, Alois Scott Sr., lived. Here, he married Dorothy, and they were united for 49 years before he went home to meet his maker. Together, A.D. and Alois Scott Sr. became established and prominent members of the Chico Black community, often providing guidance and wisdom to their family members, friends, and members of the Second Baptist Church.

Another prominent couple in Chico were local restaurant owners Pearl and Joe Persons Sr., whose sons became a Chico police officer and teacher, respectively.

As for A.D., he raised his children with a good work ethic, had high expectations of them, and was ultimately proud of what they became.

As soon as you finish reading this, look up and read Anecia Johnson’s article Growing Up Black in Chico. It is compelling, evocative, at times chilling, but always riveting. It is a look at some ugly incidents in our hometown we’d like to believe could never happen. From a physical assault on a woman to the murder of a young man, they have one thing in common: the victims were Black.

You’d think it couldn't happen here in Chico—with a state university and diverse student population, being in California, a state more accepting of people of color than most—but it did.

When speaking of race relations, people often tag their observations of the past few years with “especially these days.”

Anecia Johnson, creator and driving force behind Amma Culture and prominent member of Chico’s Black population, states, “It’s always been these days.

Not as much has changed as people like to think.” No matter where you may be, people who are “highly melanated,” as Anecia calls them, are subject to ignorance and prejudice.

Amma Culture Educates us all

Anecia recalls growing up amidst her cousins and friends in a small Black community—historically, two percent of Chico’s population is Black. She remembers asking herself as a young child, “Why was I born in this place and in this time?” It’s a question that finally resolved itself when she was an adult. However, as a child, she grew up attending local schools and being a regular church member, where she accepted the guidance taught to the congregation.

Business. Her love for world cultures influenced that decision. She said, “People felt I should go to a bigger city, but I never felt compelled to leave Chico. I’m here. I’m in the world. I’m helping make changes.” Her personal joke is that she has never traveled abroad, but she now has a passport and plans on traveling in the future. That would enhance her commitment to life that embodies what Amma Culture means.

“Amma Culture teaches pride and respect for foundational Black culture and all cultures,” she said.

“We are a platform for people to gain respect for Black culture and respect its contributions and worth.”

Foundational Black culture means that many of the world’s cultures were developed by Black people.

Amma Culture is a place where people from all walks of life can gather and learn about the African-focused diaspora. It is a center for learning and healing for the entire community through music, dance, traditions, and spirituality.

Its atmosphere of inclusion seeks to mitigate ignorance and the hostility that often arises against various ethnic minorities and to preserve the culture, history, and traditional values of African Americans and African descendants. “Our educational focus is to teach children and adults that what has been taught in public education in the past is not always accurate,” said Johnson. “Our mission is to address systemic racism and recognize generational slave trauma.” Amma Culture seeks to be a resource for families, educators, businesses, and organizations to be more functional and inclusive in our diverse community.

“We host regular community family gatherings to celebrate all ethnic cultures and are open to the public,” said Johnson. So what led Anecia Johnson to undertake such a vital and important mission for the Chico community? “It seemed during my 50s, now a grandparent, my ancestors tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘You’re it.’ So here we are today.” Johnson says her parents had prepared her for this leadership role just as their parents prepared them. “I was raised to represent my community,” she said. “I didn’t intend to enter the spotlight, but here I am.”

Amma Culture raises funds for various causes. They are currently raising money for Mark Johnson, an inspiring local artist and spinal cord injury survivor, who needs a wheelchair-accessible van. They will host an Art Block Party at the Winchester Goose in Chico on Saturday, April 27th, but will continue accepting donations through their website afterward. Three Little Birds After giving birth to her daughter, Ruby, Tiffany Schulps chose to take a break from working as a dental hygienist. When Ruby entered school in 2019, Tiffany decided it was time to start something new. I’m not often doubtful, but seeing how much I enjoyed the food from the previous tenants of the space located on the first floor of the Phoenix Building in Downtown Chico, I felt I might be left expecting something, well, mas. The familiar setting in a familiar space was where the similarities ended and the abundance began. This is Mas Amor.

I think readers will agree that there’s a shortage of really good crispy tacos in the area, as the market is dominated by small corn tortilla street taco varieties. So, if you like a crispy taco, dig right in! The snap of the crisp flour tortilla will excite you. Don’t like big chunks of tomato or onion? There aren’t any—I’ve done the research.

It’s worth noting that our first visit had three of us enjoying an appetizer in tandem, which was great because the guacamole requires a buddy system. You will lose yourself in it if you don’t have a friend to keep an eye on you. Rumor is that it will be challenging Godzilla in an upcoming film due to its massive size and stature. Large fresh chunks of tomato, onion, and jalapeño intermingle with bright and vibrant avocado within the large mortar and pestle Minor changes to the already awesome decor have been made. The most notable change, besides the food, is the ornate stoneware, chosen by the owners and specially sourced from Mexico. All in all, you’ll certainly find more room in your heart for Mas Amor.

I hadn’t had a burrito in a while, so I ordered the Mas Amor Burrito, which was incredibly delicious and did not have your typical oiliness dripping down your wrists like many other delicious burritos often do. Alas, making the inside of a burrito look like anything other than a burrito is quite an undertaking. This could only mean one thing: I had to return for the photo-worthy dish that seemed to be heading to everyone's table. If you don’t believe the Tacos Dorado at Mas Amor are worth the hype, in your free time, stop by and dare yourself not to order some.

The team of workers, owner included, produced about 20 orders of Tacos Dorado while I awaited my order for this editorial. The deliciously crispy edges and warm filling are texture perfection.

The cool sour cream, delicate lettuce, and snowfall of cotija cheese finished with a light-spiced but incredibly flavorful salsa,

was drizzled atop like a well-practiced signature.

If you’ve never seen the 1950’s sitcom, I Love Lucy, starring that zany redhead Lucille Ball, you at least need to look up season two, episode 14, “Ricky Has Labor Pains.” When Lucy experiences weird food cravings, she sends Ricky to the store for a papaya milkshake. When he hands it to her, she takes three satisfied slurps on the straw and puts out her hand.

Ricky places a giant dill pickle in it, and she then dips it in the shake and takes a big bite. Ricky’s look says it all.

known to crave dirt. The big question is why? The primary reasons can be attributed to hormonal changes, a heightened sense of taste and smell, and various nutritional deficiencies (hence, dirt). The most common cravings women experience are for fruits, dairy products, sweets, and foods with a high salt content.

Pickles. Everyone knows you can pickle a pickle, which is just a small cucumber.

You can sweet pickle it or sour pickle it.

You can have gherkins or baby dills. You can slice it into chips or cut it longways to make spears. You can fry pickles, make a relish, put them on a sandwich, in potato salad, or eat them right out of the jar.

Some cravings may be the result of health-related causes. Craving fruit may indicate a vitamin C deficiency, or craving dairy may be a calcium issue. Craving sweets like chocolate could indicate a need to up your caloric intake due to being pregnant. Sour foods such as pickles, and salty foods like potato chips and French fries, may be the body’s way of retaining fluids and replacing sodium loss during the first trimester.

Whether it’s a dill pickle dipped in papaya ice cream or eaten on a nice big juicy cheeseburger, pregnant women often do crave pickles. On the other end of the spectrum, some women have been

Some of the common to unusual cravings include Snickers bars, pork tacos, lettuce and curry, bacon sandwiches, white chocolate, lemonade, sourdough bread, peppered spaghetti—almost any type of food you can think of—and, of course, pickles. Don’t want just a simple dill pickle? Well, you can try curry pickled eggs, salt and vinegar lemons, pig’s feet (a dive bar favorite!), watermelon pickles, blueberries, bologna, and pickled beets.

No matter your favorite pickled product, you can find one that fits your taste, whether you crave it or not. I’m craving a garlic dill pickle sandwich on sourdough bread with vegan mayonnaise right now.

Deep Fried Pickles

Sweet, tangy, crunchy, and delicious—deep fried pickles are the perfect guilty pleasure. Better yet, they're super easy to make! Use the three-step recipe below to create a snack the whole family will love. Just be warned, these little snacks are addicting, to say the least.

Ingredients - 1 jar whole dill pickles - 1 cup buttermilk - 2 tbsp hot sauce - 1 cup all-purpose flour - 1 cup cornmeal - 2 tbsp garlic salt - 2 tbsp paprika - 1 tbsp cayenne pepper - 1 tsp pepper - Oil for deep frying - Dipping sauce of your choosing

Directions 1. Start by draining a jar of pickles. You can discard the liquid or save it for another pickle-flavored recipe! Cut each pickle into 1/2-inch-thick slices or cut lengthwise into spears if you'd rather serve in that shape. Allow cut pickles to drain fully on paper towels. Dab with paper towels until dry.

2. In a bowl, combine buttermilk and hot sauce. In another bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, garlic salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, and pepper. Start by dipping the pickles in your buttermilk mixture, then dip them into the flour mixture to bread them.

3. In a deep pan or Dutch oven, heat 1 inch of oil to 375°F. Fry pickles 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with dressing of choice.

3b. As an alternate to step 3, you can also fry these in an air-fryer for a healthier and less oily option.

The Family Wheel Local potter Mike Gabriel said of Pat Koszis, “Pat is the yardstick by which we are all measured.” This is very high praise coming from an accomplished artisan.

But Pat, who has her own ceramics studio and teaches classes there, not only produces beautiful, colorful pieces, she also possesses a varied background and years of ceramics experience. She is a driving force and board member of the Chico Visual Arts Alliance (ChiVAA) and the annual Chico Art Fest.

“In 2006, I was fortunate to join the Butte College ceramics staff and taught through May 2020. I quickly learned that I loved teaching,” she said. She still teaches classes at her studio to anyone interested in transforming lumps of clay into works of art or functional pieces that can be used at home. On the technical side, she 60

Pat teaches three weekly classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, guiding learners past the beginner stage and making totems and mosaics. Pat utilizes the Raku, or kiln, method of firing, but she also praises the pit firing method, an entirely different skill set. In the mornings, she rents out her studio to potters who are making a living selling their pottery. This helps defray the cost of the natural gas used for the kiln.

The big event of the year is the annual Chico Art Fest. You probably saw it when it was held at the Matador Motel on The Esplanade. This is ChiVAA’s signature event. The eleventh iteration will be held outdoors on Mother’s Day Weekend, May 10 & 11, at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Floral Avenue in Chico. This is Pat's only public display of her pottery.

This year, ChiVAA plans to exceed the expectations of prior festivals, which have received rave reviews from several sources. The festival will bring in more dancers this year, with a fire dance show

on Friday evening and Ballet Folklorico de Chico on Saturday. The two-day ART festival has four aims: to showcase Chico’s local artists, promote Chico as an arts destination, educate the public about the variety and value of art in our community, and throw a really great party Chico-style.

Local artists will transform their spaces into imaginative galleries open to the public. Booths are also reserved for selected community organizations promoting community well-being and art. The festival is a free, family-oriented event with live music and dance, fun activities for kids, food trucks, specialty coffees, and margaritas.

As for the article’s title, “The Family Wheel” consists of Pat’s studio with attached living quarters, her son and his family who live in the house out front, and her sister who lives next door. They are part of the potter community in their own way. Pat actually calls her pottery friends “claymates,” and as she said, “It’s a wonderful community of slightly older elderly people. We’re really alive. I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn't for my studio.” Be sure to join Pat and her claymates at the Chico Art Fest on May 11th and 12th. We are certain you’ll find that beautiful piece of pottery to adorn your decor.

Pat’s journey with clay started with a fascination that began when she was a student at San Jose State and continues to this day. In between, Pat worked in the corporate world, and it wasn’t until she took a ceramics class at the Richmond Art Center and “immediately fell down the rabbit hole again" that she pursued pottery seriously. After moving to Chico in 1997, she began a 13-year career as a production potter, making the same type of pieces repeatedly. Eventually, she made the transition to the creative side.

Boys & Girls Club Teen of the Year

Right now, that journey has taken her to win the local Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year award. This takes her to the next level of competition, where she will compete against other teens, potentially with the opportunity to attend the California teen competition in Los Angeles. The first place winner there will represent the state in the Pacific Regionals.

To get where she is in the competition, Arya had to present a three-minute speech in front of a panel of judges. She then answered questions from the judges about herself and her experiences.

Instrumental in her growth and oration skills is Teen Center Counselor Emylee Krupa. “I’ve seen Arya grow up tremendously in the last seven months and step into who she is as a person,” she said. “The process of preparing for the competition has had a big impact. Arya is a prime example of what teens can achieve.”

Teen is an important and pivotal word to Arya and Emylee. The perception of The Boys and Girls Club is that it caters to younger kids, but this is far from the truth. The Chico chapter has many teens attending the Teen Center and Club, and the Boys and Girls Club is an ardent supporter of teens from broken homes, troubled situations, and foster kids. “A lot of people have a negative view of foster kids, especially if they’re over 13. It’s like they think it’s too late to help those kids,”

said Arya. “That just isn’t true.”

The Chico Teen Club welcomes all teenagers and offers a positive experience to whoever walks through their doors. Not just that, but members of the Keystone group, sort of like school ASB officers, will have the opportunity to attend the 2024 National Keystone Conference to be held in Atlanta, GA. Like many conventions, kids can hear guest speakers, attend break-out sessions, and go to advocacy and leadership programs.

Better yet, one trip the kids are looking forward to is going to The Waffle House and enjoying their downhome cuisine.

Arya, who loves to read and write, has received considerable guidance from Juleah Cordi, who has helped her immensely with the writing and presentation of her speech. As for the future, Arya plans on attending Sonoma State College to major in journalism.

She’s experienced her parents’ divorce, a stint in foster care, relocating from the Fresno area to Chico, and the ultimate trauma—the death of her father during her freshman year.
