Artist Elizabeth Newman Kuiper would rather photograph subjects with her cell phone than with a Nikon, and she embraces rather than spurns visual “noise”—random imperfections caused by her phone camera’s sensor.

Elizabeth explains, “My cellphone is always with me. If I come upon something intriguing, I can capture it spontaneously.

I approach art in the spirit of play, working

by instinct rather than logic. I like the ‘low tech’ of my cell phone and the intrinsic textures that it captures. Cell phones from 15 years ago had such low resolution that pixels appear as big squares of color when enlarged into a large-format print. This reminded me of the monumental selfportraits painted by Chuck Close and the pointillist paintings of Georges Seurat.”

Elizabeth expresses her wonder at the

mystery of existence through her art. She recalls, “When I was about 10, I became enthralled by ideas of God and the meaning of life. Later, I explored the I Ching, one of the oldest philosophies, dating to 2,000 BC. Rather than coming up with answers, it empowers the readers’ questions. The I Ching’s ‘yin and yang’ concept refers to opposite cosmic forces which interact, interconnect, and support each other, much as Surrealist use of automatic writing aims to 11

connect conscious and unconscious aspects of the mind. Consulting with the I Ching reminds me that ‘imperfections’ are part of an all-encompassing life force.”

When creating ‘Camellias Winter’, Elizabeth says: “I wanted to unite the heaven (sky) and the earth, two of the eight elements in the I Ching hexagon. This series began by printing a 24”x32” version of photos taken of blue skies with white clouds. I positioned the photos face up under camellia shrubs and flowering trees in my garden, so that flower petals in the spring would fall by chance ‘into’ the sky. I photographed the resulting layers of petals, fruits, leaves, and marks made by rain. I wound up leaving those prints around the property for over a year, and as vegetation accumulated and decayed, I photographed changes in the cycle of life. When new camellias had covered much of the surface in the second year, I took the final photo. I was also attempting to bring more joyful color into my palette. At this point, I was still using Adobe Photoshop in very minimal ways to bring out what I saw as the true ‘nature’ of nature.”

Elizabeth comments, “In the past, I had been attracted to and used more subtle colors in my art, finding light out of darkness.

After the pandemic, I wanted to bring more bright colors into my work and invite more joy into my life. I began using extremes in Photoshop to bring out saturation and vibrancy. What started as a kind of joke to myself revealed exciting elements of the visual spectrum previously hidden from the naked eye. The last two years, I have been exploring these spectrums by focusing on the sun, moon, stars, rainbows, and more.”

Elizabeth moved to her current home on Bidwell Avenue 35 years ago with her late husband, James Kuiper, an artist and chair of the CSUC Art Department. Here, she and James created a park-like setting with gardens and pergolas where she takes most of her photographs. Elizabeth recalls how hard James had labored to convert a nearby 900-foot barn with a dirt floor into a white walled, light-filled professional environment divided into shared exhibition, studio, and storage areas.

Early in their marriage, they had enjoyed hunting for collage and assemblage materials at yard sales, junk yards, and thrift stores. After their daughter 13

Hannah was born in 1992, Elizabeth realized that cell phone photography suited the new lifestyle and space requirements and put assemblage materials into storage.

Finally, decades later, the contents of storage boxes are coming to life. Many of the objects carry symbolic associations, such as the musical instruments in her newer pieces, and some of her assemblages have a shrine-like quality.

In addition to creating her own art, Elizabeth has, for the past 14 years, operated an art reproduction and printing business, Pixel Perfect Printing. The two activities are compatible and mutually supportive. Elizabeth scans, photographs, and prints giclee prints of original artworks for regional artists. She also does photographic scanning and repairs, finding great satisfaction in helping to restore precious family heirlooms and scenes from past generations through old prints, negatives, and slides. Pixel Perfect was located in Art Etc. in Downtown Chico for its first 9 years, but just before the pandemic, Elizabeth decided to try operating out of her own studio. She has been there for five years, and it has worked out well.

You won’t spot Pixel Perfect as you drive south on Nord Avenue, but when you come upon Asian Market at 337 Nord ( just before Stewart), pull into the parking lot shared

by Top Notch Smoke Shop. Walk back to a red corrugated metal facade with the lettering LEO CAST ALLEY—James Kuiper’s witty allusion to art dealer Leo Castelli’s famous New York Gallery, where Andy Warhol first exhibited his Campbell Soup Can series in 1961. Beneath that sign is one for Pixel Perfect Printing.

I visited Elizabeth’s business, its compact facade led me to anticipate a small interior. Instead, it was like entering a London phone booth and finding myself inside Dr. Who’s Tardis spaceship. After passing a room filled with totemic objects, I walked down a long gallery hung with some twenty large photos of starry skies. The last spacious room contained Elizabeth’s printing press and computers for her business. Through its glass doors, I could see Elizabeth’s garden as well as her Australian Shepherd, Maple.

That Elizabeth now only needs to stroll a few minutes along Bidwell Creek from her business to her home and garden reminded me of how Claude Monet spent 30 years painting his garden and waterlily pond at his Giverny home.

While Elizabeth united heaven and earth by pointing her camera lens up at the sky and down at her flowers, Claude painted reflections of the sky in his pond. Both artists remind us of the ephemeral, mysterious aspects of life to be cherished.

The Event: Ailey II If live, jaw-dropping performances are your thing, this is a must-see event this January. Known as the next generation of modern dance, this legendary company, founded by Alvin Ailey, brings bold choreography, powerhouse dancers, and serious main-character energy to the stage. Under Artistic Director Francesca Harper, Ailey II blends culture, creativity, and pure movement magic into one unforgettable night. It takes place January 26 at Laxson Auditorium. Doors open at 7p.m., and the show starts at 7:30p.m. The show is 18+ only.

Winter is Coming While winter may evoke lovely feelings of joy and wonder, it can also induce a host of not-so-pleasant skin conditions. To quote the acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones, “Winter is Coming.” We should all prepare!

“Well, why winter?” you may ask. The lower temperatures and drier weather can cause or worsen such skin conditions as atopic dermatitis (aka eczema), perleche (aka severely chapped lips), and seborrheic dermatitis (aka dandruff).

While these conditions have some differences, they share the common symptomology of dryness, flakiness, and itching. The additional combination of shorter, darker days and—often— more stress during this time of year can further contribute to these and other skin conditions.

So, what can we do to alleviate or prevent these various maladies? First, moisturizing is key! Moisturizers, which generally come in the form of ointments (thick and greasy), creams (thick but not greasy), and lotions (more watery), should be applied daily. They’re best used immediately after a bath or shower to slightly damp skin. I recommend ointments or creams instead of lotions, especially in the wintertime.

Lotions may feel good initially, but they are generally less effective than thicker moisturizer formulations.

Second, moisturizing is just as important as avoiding overwashing. Overwashing includes not just washing too frequently but also using products that are too abrasive or harsh. Many cleansers for the face or body employ fragrances, beads, or scrubs that can be too drying, especially in the winter. Cleansers that we may tolerate in the warmer and more humid summer months may be less tolerable in the winter and can contribute to dry and itchy skin during the winter months. This applies to the skin of the face, body, scalp, and hair.

Seborrheic dermatitis, which presents as dry, flaky, irritated, or itchy skin of the scalp and face, can be especially prominent in the winter. It is thought to 18

be triggered by changes in the weather and our body’s adjustment (over or under correction) to the climate. It is also believed to be triggered by stress, which tends to increase during finals week or when we anticipate some of the demands of the holiday season. In addition to stress management, using an over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo or even seeing your dermatologist for a prescription-strength shampoo can be especially helpful for treating seborrhea.

Perleche is another condition that is quite common in the winter due to the drier conditions. In addition to the seasonal contributions, this condition can be triggered by insufficient intake of fluids or water, which is common in the winter when many of us are less active.

Decreased fluid intake can make our saliva more concentrated, which can be irritating or even caustic to our lips or the surrounding skin near the corners of our mouths. Hydrating correctly with 3-4 liters of water daily and using a moisturizing and hydrating lip balm can be especially helpful for treating this condition.

Protect Those Peepers!

I believe in keeping my medical advice clear and straightforward. There is a lot of “optimization” of everything out there these days—it's impossible to keep up.

In general, the advice below will get you a long way when it comes to your eye health in the new year!

New year, new snooze

Why 2026 Should Be the Year You Finally Sleep on It Sleep isn’t a luxury, a reward, or something you “catch up on” after a long week. It’s biological infrastructure. If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution that pays dividends in energy, mood, focus, immunity, and longevity, don’t just aim for more sleep—aim for better sleep.

Science has been ringing this alarm clock for years. A landmark study published in Nature by Walker and Stickgold (2006) demonstrated that sleep plays a critical role in memory consolidation, learning, and emotional regulation. In short: your brain literally rewires itself for the better while you sleep. Skip it, and you’re running tomorrow’s software on yesterday’s hardware.

So how much sleep do you actually need?

For most adults, the sweet spot is 7–9 hours per night, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Less than seven on a regular basis increases the risk of heart disease, depression, obesity, weakened immunity, and cognitive decline.

More than nine can be appropriate for some people—but quality supercedes quantity.

Here’s where the “better sleep” resolution comes in.

First, protect your sleep schedule like an appointment you can’t cancel. Going to bed and waking up at the same time—even on weekends—anchors your circadian rhythm,

making it easier to fall asleep and wake up naturally.

Second, engineer your environment. Your bedroom should be cool (around 65°F), dark, and quiet. Blackout curtains, white noise, and breathable bedding aren’t indulgences; they’re tools.

Third, respect the wind-down. The brain needs a runway, not a cliff. Power down screens at least an hour before bed, dim the lights, and choose calming rituals—reading, stretching, or a warm shower. Blue light and late-night emails are productivity thieves disguised as habits.

Fourth, watch what you consume. Caffeine after early afternoon and alcohol close to bedtime both sabotage deep sleep, even if alcohol makes you feel drowsy. Hydration matters too—but stop heavy fluid intake an hour or two before bed.

Finally, don’t underestimate daylight.

Morning sunlight helps set your internal clock, making nighttime sleep deeper and more efficient.

This year, resolve to sleep like it matters— because it does. Your body keeps the score, and sleep is how you win.

Here’s to clearer mornings, calmer nights, and a well-rested year ahead.

Schedule a baseline dilated eye examination at age 40 for adults, and repeat every few years thereafter. By 55, you’re looking at having one every one to two years! www.AAO.org has specific age recommendations you can count on.

Watch the weight! Diabetic eye disease is the leading cause of blindness in adults.

Maintain a healthy diet with real, unprocessed foods, healthy fats, green leafy vegetables, and fresh fruits.

Eye protection matters! You wouldn’t believe the things I’ve pulled out of people’s eyes—from beetles to javelins.

Don’t be that “eye.”

Exercise often. It doesn’t have to be super complicated. Get outside and move for at least 30 minutes every day!

Stop smoking–period.

Many conditions run in families, so talk with your family and find out what might be hiding in your genetics! Talk with your medical provider about testing if that isn’t possible.

Wear sunglasses! Chronic UV exposure is harmful, so wear a hat and sexy sunglasses. Decrease your risk of skin cancer, red eyes, funky eye growths on the white part of the eye, macular degeneration, cataracts, and eye strain.

There you have it—a simple list that should be easy to follow toward healthier eyes! Have a great 2026!

As the calendar flips to a new year, it’s the perfect moment to rethink not just how much time we spend on screens, but what we could gain by stepping away from them.

Research consistently shows that excessive screen use comes with real costs. A wellcited study published in JAMA Pediatrics (Twenge & Campbell, 2018) found that adolescents who spent more than two hours a day on screens were significantly more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and reduced well-being compared to peers with lower screen exposure. While the study focused on youth, adult brains are hardly immune. The mechanisms—dopamine loops, disrupted sleep, reduced face-to-face interaction—apply across ages.

Overdosed skin Upgraded Living spoke with Nerissa Prieto, MD, an aesthetic and wellness doctor in Chico, California. She was recently featured in Dermatology Times, an online medical journal, for her expertise in skincare, providing insight into the growing problem of “overdosed” skin. This is the first of three segments based on her published Q&A. “Social media wields a powerful—but not always positive—influence over personal skin care routines. With quick clips, dramatic before and afters, and complex multi-step routines, the audience with problem skin is led down a path of aggressive regimens that often disregard the skin’s fundamental biology. I see patients who are picking up on TikTok and Instagram trends who then go overboard with multiple irritating ingredients, excessive daily exfoliation, and even aggressive at-home chemical peels.”

She recommends that bothersome skin conditions be evaluated by a professional, but emphasizes that piling on active ingredients does not always lead to better results. Many routines include potent ‘actives’ such as tretinoin (Retin-A), concentrated vitamin C, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid.

While these ingredients have meaningful therapeutic uses, Dr. Prieto notes that they are not intended to be layered aggressively.

“When used without strategic endpoints, they can weaken the skin barrier, disrupt the microbiome, and amp up inflammation.

This is especially concerning for individuals with rosacea or naturally sensitive skin who may not realize how these regimens can negatively affect their skin health.”

Another misguided belief is that stinging or burning indicates a product is effective; in fact, these sensations may signal barrier injury. “Once the barrier is broken down, normal hydration status is impaired, inflammation becomes persistent, and the skin lives in a state of never-ending irritation.

This ‘angry skin’ state will not improve until the skin is given time and TLC to recover.”

During early repair, Dr. Prieto recommends seeking medical-grade formulations containing concentrated growth factors.

These will calm inflammation and restore a healthy skin barrier. They integrate well into a simplified routine that reduces skin stress and promotes healing and recovery.

Resolve to protect your mental Health The beginning of a new year can be a calling from our minds and spirits to create resolutions that honor both who we already are as well as what we believe we can become. It is an invitation to shed who we think we “should” be and to instead actualize our potential.

Mental health work becomes most powerful when it’s grounded in selfacceptance: choosing goals that help you embrace your identity, deepen your confidence, and show up more fully in your own life.

Normalizing therapy is a vital part of this process. Therapy isn’t just a tool for our distress and challenges in life, but rather it’s an opportunity and investment in our thinking, our emotional clarity, and our capacity to grow. It can give us each a space to explore the beliefs that shape our lives, dismantle old patterns, and step into potential with intention.

Creating resolutions through this lens means choosing dreams that feel aligned with our authentic selves. slow is the new year's power move We see the same pattern play out every January: new calendars, fresh goals, and an unspoken belief that if we don’t move faster, we’ll fall behind. But here’s the truth— chronic urgency isn’t productivity. It’s anxiety wearing a business-casual outfit.

We live in a culture that treats everything like an emergency. Emails feel urgent.

Texts feel urgent. Notifications feel urgent.

Our nervous systems never get the memo that most of it can wait. Over time, this constant state of “on” takes a measurable toll. A study by Gloria Mark and colleagues published in Computers in Human Behavior (2014) found that frequent digital interruptions significantly increased stress, frustration, and mental workload. Even brief task-switching raised heart rate and cortisol levels, keeping the brain in a near-constant state of low-grade alarm.

So this year’s resolution isn’t just to slow down—it’s to release yourself from the belief that everything is urgent.

Start by redefining urgency. True urgency involves time-sensitive consequences that cannot be reversed. A medical issue?

Urgent. A safety concern? Urgent. Most emails, meetings, and messages? Important, yes—but rarely urgent.

Learning to reprioritize the things that tend to take up the most mental space isn't as difficult as it might seem. Use this simple Urgency Test before reacting:

Batch-check emails instead of responding all day. Turn off nonessential notifications.

Schedule white space on your calendar the same way you schedule meetings. Slowing down isn’t laziness; it’s nervous system regulation.

Then, choose what replaces the rush. Use reclaimed time for deeper work, thoughtful planning, movement, or rest—activities that calm the brain rather than stimulate it.

Even five minutes of intentional breathing between tasks can reset your stress response.

Most importantly, practice saying, “I’ll get to this soon,” instead of “right now.” The world won’t collapse. Your mental health, however, will improve.

were so evident that the studio owners offered her a scholarship to complete her 200-hour yoga teacher training, an opportunity rarely given to someone so young. She completed the training and began teaching in July, becoming a yoga instructor at just 17 years old. On Monday nights at 7 p.m., she now leads a class at Empower Hot Yoga, blending teen empowerment and self-love into a practice that resonates deeply with her students. With cheerleading now behind her, after seven years cheering for PV, she’s ready to step even more fully into her role as a teacher and mentor.

Resolve to prepare for allergy season As someone who completed my undergraduate degree at Chico State, I'm no stranger to allergies. Spring brings warmer weather and blooming plants, but for many people, it also signals the start of allergies. Preparing early can help reduce symptoms and make the season more manageable.

A highly-effective step is to minimize pollen exposure. On high-pollen days, keep windows and doors closed and use air conditioning, if possible. Showering and changing clothes after spending time outdoors can remove pollen from skin and hair. Dry laundry indoors rather than outside during peak pollen season.

Planning ahead with medications can also be helpful. Many people benefit from starting a daily nasal steroid spray one month before their typical allergy symptoms begin. Using it consistently gives the medicine time to become effective when you need it.

Antihistamines should be started at the first sign of symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, or runny nose.

Other supportive measures include saline nasal rinses to clear pollen from the nose.

Most weather apps will pull pollen counts from larger cities, so ensure that you are checking local pollen forecasts to plan activities.

New Year, New Moves Don’t Chase Fitness—Build It Having spent a decent amount of time in gyms, I see the same mistake every January: people choose a workout they admire, not one they can actually sustain. They sprint out of the gate, burn out by February, and quietly decide fitness “isn’t for them.” The problem isn’t motivation—it’s mismatched expectations. The real goal of a new year’s fitness resolution isn’t intensity. It’s consistency.

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have for long-term health. A landmark study published in The Lancet by Lee et al. (2012) found that physical inactivity is responsible for more than 5 million deaths globally each year—on par with smoking.

Regular physical activity, on the other hand, significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, depression, and even cognitive decline.

Movement isn’t just about looking better; it’s about living longer and staying healthy.

So here’s a smarter New Year’s resolution: start where you are, not where you think you should be.

Choosing the right routine begins with an honest assessment of your current fitness level. If you’ve been mostly sedentary, your foundation should be walking, light strength training, and mobility work—not daily high-intensity classes. If you already move regularly, progression might mean

New Year's reflections At the turn of the year, I harken back to my old real estate mentor, the wily, wise, eccentric, and brilliant KDV, whose brain contained more jokes, sayings, and oneliners than any of us combined. KDV posted a saying on the wall next to his desk on a New Year’s Day: “DON’T FEAR THE YEAR!” KDV said, “That’s about politics. Every new year, people start handwringing and doomsaying about who’s in charge and who shouldn’t be. We can’t let politics get under our skin!”

This New Year’s Eve, my wife and I will have dinner with two other couples, dear and long-time friends.

I know our conversation will turn to the tragic burn-down of Bidwell Mansion. That tragedy is especially close to one of our friends at the dinner. He is a contractor who has done massive work over the years on the restoration of the Bidwell Mansion. I texted him the morning we learned that the beautiful carriage house, adjacent to the mansion, had survived the fire. “Good news,” I texted, “Your carriage house made it!” Our friend rebuilt it in 1988-89. A bronze plaque embedded in the bricks still bears his name.

One New Year’s resolution this year will be our involvement in the restoration of the Bidwell Mansion.

A Second Chance at Health

Six years ago, on a whim and a three-day free trial of eHarmony, Hilary clicked on a profile that felt different. She tried to send her number, but the platform wouldn’t let her due to the free trial—an early, somewhat comical reminder that dating after being recently single wasn’t as intuitive as she’d hoped. On the other end of the web, Dr. David Alonso noticed her message and reached out. A conversation started, their connection grew, and a partnership developed that neither of them expected would one day transform thousands of lives.

Their love story unfolded long before their business did. For a year and a half,

Hilary—originally from Redding—commuted from her hometown to Chico. She had an HR management degree and was working as an office manager in Redding at the time, and Dr. Alonso saw the potential to work together. He asked if she’d consider joining the team at his clinic, and she initially declined, but life and love have a way of shifting priorities. She eventually said yes, they married, and soon found themselves working side by side without realizing how significant that pairing would become.

In late 2022, medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro were becoming mainstream topics of conversation. Both David and

Hilary were feeling overweight, sluggish, and increasingly discouraged. They knew how difficult weight loss could be—despite exercise, dieting, and determination, the scale refused to budge in any meaningful way.

They began semaglutide and tirzepatide in December 2022. For Hilary, the side effects hit immediately: nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, even vomiting and dehydration. “Sometimes the body needs to acclimate,” she says. “But mine wouldn’t.”

She eventually switched to microdosing, and slowly, the medication became somewhat tolerable.

David experienced only mild discomfort, and his results were undeniable. “Within a month I noticed a significant difference—eight to ten pounds,” he recalls.

More importantly, he felt different: less tired, less achy, and even experienced less snoring. Perhaps most importantly, movement became considerably easier.

Watching her husband’s success inspired—and frustrated—Hilary. “I was mad about it,” she laughs.

“I could see it working for him and for other people. I wanted that too.”

By early 2023, Hilary began spearheading a small side project inside their clinic—barely more than an experiment at first—to see whether other patients might benefit from the same treatment. She and Dr. Alonso suspected they would, and they were right.

The weight continued to fall off for David and the patients in their test group. Hilary eventually switched medications in August 2023 and saw changes almost immediately. The side effects disappeared, and she found a path forward.

“Once I started taking the medication, the food noise disappeared, and I wasn’t hungry all the time.” Dr. Alonso recalls, “For the first time in my life, I really felt what it meant to be full.”

“This was an awakening for me,” Hilary explains. “I finally understood how some people could take one bite of something and walk away. Before this, I never felt satisfied after a meal.”

David eventually lost 75 pounds, and Hilary lost 60. The physical results were impressive—but the behavioral shift was profound. “I started understanding what it meant to eat because I was hungry,” he says, “not because I was chasing satisfaction I could never reach.”

Both came to believe strongly in the science: research shows many people who struggle with obesity produce less natural GLP-1, the hormone these medications mimic. Gut microbiome disruption—possibly from antibiotics or numerous other factors over a lifetime— may play a role.

“People say you can’t out-exercise a bad diet,” David says, “and it’s true. Without correcting what’s happening hormonally, most people don’t stand a chance.”

When they began in early 2023, they had just 30 interested patients and no intention of building a stand-alone program, but word spread quickly. Patients reported eating less without white-knuckling their way through cravings. They moved more easily, and they felt hopeful for the first time in years. The results were too significant—and too consistent—to ignore.

By July 2023, the Alonsos realized the program needed its own identity and its own staff. What started as a side project became a full-scale medical weight-loss practice backed by three mid-level providers and two physicians, including David and Dr. DiSano.

Today, nearly 1,500 patients are active in their program.

More than 1,900 have participated in the last 28 months.

Collectively, patients have lost 55,620 pounds, and already over 400 have achieved 20% or more total body weight loss, with an average time to achieve this of 16 months.

“This has been the happiest side of our entire practice,” Hilary says. “Patients come in smiling. They feel better physically and mentally. Our PA says she loves working here because everyone is so happy all the time.”

A year ago, one patient relied on oxygen to move through their day. They have now lost 130 pounds and no longer need supplemental oxygen at all.

Another patient—a man in his 70s—walked in at over 300 pounds and was emotionally exhausted. “Doc, I’m ready to give up,” he told David. “It hurts to move.” A year later, he strolled into the office wearing gym shorts at 209 pounds. “He got a second lease on life,” David says. “He doesn’t hurt anymore and loves going to the gym—a complete 180.”

Critics sometimes argue against medication-based weight loss. Dr. Alonso has a response he often repeats: “If your house is on fire, you don’t start trimming the bushes. You call the fire department.”

For many patients, he explains, GLP-1 medications are the tool that allows them to regain enough control to rebuild healthy habits.

“When you’ve been trying for so long, when every New Year’s resolution ends a month or two in, people feel defeated,” Hilary says. “For so many, this was finally something that worked.”

Their program focuses primarily on diet: lower-carb approaches, nutrition tools, recipe support, and exercise encouraged at a pace that feels natural once weight begins to come off. Providers monitor BMI and muscle mass to ensure safe, balanced progress throughout the journey. Their goal is always to use the least amount of medication necessary.

One unique aspect of their clinic: they accept insurance for consultations, even though patients pay for medications or supplies themselves. “Our mission has been to make this affordable and accessible,” David says.

The Alonsos don’t just practice what they preach—they live it. Losing weight has opened their lives back up. They travel more, hike more, and relax more comfortably. “You just don’t feel tired anymore,” Hilary says.

Their last stay-cation turned into a project they call Chicken City—a flock of 35 chickens integrated into their garden, providing fresh eggs and fresh food. It’s a symbol of the healthier, more active life they suddenly had energy to build.

Always searching for innovative solutions, they are preparing to launch a six-month study combining GLP-1 treatment with TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation).

TMS has been shown to reduce addictive behaviors, and they hope it might help patients maintain reduced food noise after reaching their goal weight.

They plan to recruit 100 participants for this study and are excited about the possibility that it may be the first study of its kind.

“We try to incorporate the latest science to help people become more successful,” David says. “We’ve made more of an impact in the last few years than I did in my first 16 years of primary care.

Fourteen months ago, with a newfound willingness, I began a transformative journey to improve my overall health.

the happiest of hours Since its inception, we’ve tried to keep this article about the little guy, the new place, or the hottest food concept on the street. So, taking a fresh look at how to approach this editorial, we decided to visit one of the long-established dining destinations. We agreed upon Sicilian Cafe, nearing their 42nd anniversary on the heels of numerous food and drink awards last year, and visited for happy hour. The small bite sampling, as you see, got a little out of hand.

Deceptively masked, the scampi highlights five large, plump, pillowy shrimp resting in a savory white wine and butter sauce of a similar color. The butter and garlic create a richness that balances beautifully with the acid from the large lemon slices. The dish is finished with the same microgreens as the arancini, lending a snap to every bite.

A bowl of delicious treasure chests: the clams are sauteed in garlic and olive oil before being coated with fresh Parmesan powder. Every excavation is rewarded with delicate luxuriousness. Cradled in one shell is a bright pop of the crimson beet microgreens, while beneath lies a bed of fettuccini pasta, soaking in the flavor of the clams for a mouthfeel that transports you to the seaside of Sicily. My belly is full as others eye my display and place orders of their own.

During my visit, I observed friends gathering at the wide, horseshoe bar. As the dimmed interior lights rose, daylight faded around the windows that line the exterior of 240 Wall Street. Resolve to Find the best version of yourself The new year traditionally brings a time for reflection. Thus, for many, ideas of personal change or growth. Some of us even make the infamous New Year’s resolution, the success of which, of course, depends on one’s resolve.

Some may resolve to stop smoking, or to curb other habits or behaviors causing them cognitive dissonance, if not health problems. Others may reflect upon their work life, or interpersonal relationships with friends, family, or peers.

There are also those dissatisfied with their appearance, or even their overall health, vowing exercise and/or dietary changes. And a large number of those people will pursue medical assistance with these issues. That may take many forms—starting a GLP-1 medication or considering bariatric surgery for weight loss and health improvements, to surgical correction of deformity caused by trauma or invasive surgeries for cancer treatment.

Others simply want to improve body contours or reverse some of the signs of aging. For the vast majority, none of these things are purely a function of vanity.

pressure. Ask yourself: What have I always been drawn to, even if I never felt good enough to try? The skill that makes your soul sing often shows up quietly—through fascination, envy, or daydreams—not loud ambition.

Creation changes your nervous system in ways consumption never can. A study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology by Conner, DeYoung, and Silvia (2018) found that engaging in creative activities—even small, everyday ones— significantly increased feelings of well-being, purpose, and personal growth. Participants didn’t need to be artists. They simply needed to make something. Creativity, the study showed, is less about talent and more about expression.

Give yourself permission to explore without committing. Take a pottery class, a photography workshop, a dance lesson, a language course, or a creative writing session. Try music, gardening, woodworking, painting, cooking, storytelling, or digital design. The goal isn’t mastery; it’s resonance. If time disappears while you’re doing it, pay attention—that’s your signal.

So here’s a better New Year’s resolution: create more than you consume.

This doesn’t mean quitting Netflix or deleting social media. It means tipping the balance. If you spend an hour consuming content, spend ten minutes creating something of your own—writing, sketching, cooking without a recipe, or learning a chord. That small shift rewires how you experience your time—and yourself.

New Year, New Art! New Year’s traditions have always included digging deep and envisioning what we want the next year to personally be—turning over a new leaf, pursuing an already existing idea, or pulling something entirely new out of the hat. monca, the Museum of Northern California Art, foresees the future as multi-layered, starting with many thanks to donors who generously contributed to matching a $20,000 gift, ensuring that the mission of the museum continues.

Through memberships, grants, donations, and volunteer support, monca has grown 48

over the years to include 4,000 square feet of exploring art, stretching one's mind, and making the arts available to everyone.

Exhibitions for the past year have included the annual showcasing of birds and the Snow Goose Festival, Family Portraits and Foster Care Awareness, followed by Belinda Hanson and Carol Jenkins with women artists from monca’s permanent collection. Don’t Kill the Messenger helped both artists and the public start conversations and become

more engaged in understanding the images and the ideas behind them. Their biannual Veterans’ exhibition and dinner provided a fantastic way for veterans and their families to spend time together, surrounded by their always-strong artwork. monca’s exhibitions in the coming year will present even more opportunities for growth as they visit California Guests (parasites) and Small Wonders. They are honored to host Plhis: Poetry Reimagined through Art, as seen through the eyes

of the Hmong community, a Stonewall exhibition, and an art exhibition experience that makes art accessible to and by all.

The museum has recognized that its future lies in the hands and minds of our younger generation, prompting the creation of the Junior Board, composed of high school and college students.

They have written bylaws, created workshops, led discussion groups, and volunteered at monca’s various events. In the spring of 2026, they will learn the ropes of starting an exhibition from scratch—spreading the word, jurying the entries, hanging the work, and creating thoughtful interaction. It will be called Never Too Old, Never Too Young!

As monca looks forward to re-energizing their modes of funding for operations and the Capital Campaign, which will add 9,000 square feet to be used for expanded education opportunities, enlarging the exhibition space, and providing an area to highlight both visual and performing arts, monca will continue to bring the Northstate a wide variety of opportunities and ways to get involved.

LUFFA

From Garden Vine to Bath-Time Favorite Have you ever held a luffa sponge and wondered where it comes from? Most people assume it’s harvested from the ocean, imagining it as a dried sea sponge. The truth is a lot more charming and homegrown. A luffa is actually a vegetable, part of the gourd family, and it grows on a long, vigorous vine throughout the warm summer months. If you can grow cucumbers or pumpkins, you can grow luffa. With satisfying reaching tendrils and yellow blossoms, it's also a beautiful addition to any garden trellis or fence line.

In its earliest stages, luffa is entirely edible.

When young and still smooth, the fruit can be used much like a tender zucchini, with a mild flavor; it is perfect for stir-fries or sautéing.

As it matures, the inside of the gourd slowly transforms. The flesh dries out and develops its signature internal fibrous structure. By the end of the growing season, that webbed network has fully formed. All it takes is drying the fruit and peeling off its outer shell to reveal the natural luffa sponge hidden inside.

Different varieties have different levels of abrasion. I grow two varieties: one with a gentler, skin-scrubbing level of abrasion, and another, firmer, scratchier version I use to scrub pots and pans without scratching them. They are the perfect cast-iron scrubber when your favorite pan needs a refresh and seasoning.

Luffa has been used in ingenious ways throughout history. One of the most fascinating examples comes from World War II, when luffa fibers were used as oil filters due to their durability and resistance to breakdown. So interesting to me that something we casually scrub our calloused feet with once served an essential role in wartime machinery. Over the years, luffa has been used for everything from cleaning pads to crafts, but today it’s most commonly enjoyed for its role in self-care and natural home products.

One of my favorite ways to use luffa is in handmade soap. Once the gourds are dried and cleaned, I slice them into rounds and 53

There’s something incredibly renewing about using a natural sponge to gently scrub away the dry skin of the season, almost like washing off the “old” and revealing the new underneath. It’s regenerative, refreshing, and oddly grounding. In a world full of synthetic tools and products, luffa reminds us that sometimes the best solutions are the ones growing right in our backyards.

With luffa’s inherent eco-friendly qualities, its variety of uses, and its aesthetic growth habits, it is a staple plant that earns a spot in my garden every year. Wait until early June for zone 9 and pop some seeds in the dirt, you won't regret it.

place them into soap molds. Then I melt down my soap base, usually a creamy goat milk blend, and pour it over the luffa slices. As it cools, the fibers become encased in the bar, creating a beautifully textured, exfoliating soap that looks stunning and works even better. This is a perfect winter project. If you plan properly during the growing season, you can have luffa sponges and luffa soaps ready for gifting, scrubbing dishes, or elevating your skincare routine year-round. With a growing season of over 100 days, you get one shot to grow for the year, so plan ahead, although that is not nearly as daunting as it sounds, with a very prolific seed-to-fruit ratio if planted right and watered well.

Italian Vegetable Minestrone Italian minestrone soup is a timeless expression of cucina povera—simple, nourishing cooking rooted in tradition and seasonality. Dating back to ancient Rome, minestrone evolved as a practical way for families to use whatever vegetables, beans, and grains were available, changing with the seasons and the region. There is no single “correct” recipe, only thoughtful combinations built on olive oil, vegetables, and slow simmering. In the colder winter months, minestrone becomes especially comforting, offering warmth, depth, and sustenance in every bowl. Packed with fiber-rich vegetables, protein-filled beans, and antioxidant-rich tomatoes or greens, it’s both hearty and deeply healthy. Low in fat yet filling, minestrone supports digestion, boosts immunity, and provides long-lasting energy. More than a soup, it’s a celebration of balance—wholesome ingredients, rustic flavor, and the enduring wisdom of Italian home cooking.

1 medium onion, diced

1. Build the flavor base Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion, carrots, and celery. Sauté 5–7 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.

1 zucchini, diced

1 cup green beans, cut into bite-size pieces

1 cup diced potatoes (Yukon Gold or red)

1 cup chopped cabbage or kale

1 can (14–15 oz) cannellini or kidney beans, drained and rinsed

½ cup small pasta (ditalini, small shells, or elbow)

Liquids & Seasoning •

6 cups vegetable broth

1 bay leaf

•

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

Salt and ground black pepper, to taste

Finish •

1–2 tbsp tomato paste (optional, for richness)

Fresh parsley or basil, chopped

Grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, for serving

2. Add vegetables & tomatoes Add zucchini, green beans, potatoes, cabbage (or kale), diced tomatoes, and tomato paste (if using). Stir to combine.

3. Simmer Pour in vegetable broth. Add bay leaf, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook uncovered for 20 minutes.

4. Beans & pasta Stir in beans and pasta. Simmer another 10–12 minutes, until pasta and vegetables are tender.

5. Finish & serve Remove bay leaf. Taste and adjust seasoning. Ladle into bowls and top with fresh herbs and plenty of Parmesan.

Tips For a very Italian touch: Add a Parmesan rind to the pot while simmering.

Make it seasonal: Use butternut squash, spinach, or Swiss chard instead.

Go gluten-free: Skip pasta or replace with rice or gluten-free pasta.

A Little Gold, a Lot of Glow, and No Reason to Rush in Nevada City Nevada City doesn’t so much welcome you as it does flirt with you.

You roll in off the highway, and suddenly the Sierra foothills start acting like they’ve got a secret. The air turns piney. The light does that honey-gold thing that makes you slow down without realizing it. And the town itself—perched and hilly, all brick facades, ironwork, and old-fashioned charm—looks like it’s been waiting patiently for you to arrive and remember what wandering feels like.

This is a place that doesn’t shout for attention. It doesn’t need to. Nevada City knows exactly who it is—part Gold Rush 60

grit, part storybook setting, part creative hideaway for people who like their lives a little less rushed and a little more interesting. You can sip a properly made cocktail in a historic saloon, walk five minutes, and find yourself along a creek where the sound of water drowns out everything except your own thoughts. It’s charming without being precious, historic without feeling frozen, and just eccentric enough to keep things fun.

We visited in December, when Nevada City leans hard into its roots and becomes something close to cinematic.

The Downtown Victorian Christmas Celebration was in full swing, and the

town felt like it had collectively agreed to step back into another century—just for fun. Even as you’re likely reading this in January, when the garlands have been packed away and the carolers have returned to their regular wardrobes, you’ll want to add it to your calendar for 2026.

Nevada City embodies them.

Like many foothill towns, Nevada City was born out of the Gold Rush, springing up along Deer Creek in 1849 when miners discovered the area wasn’t just scenic— it was lucrative. The town underwent several early names before settling on its current one, and fires forced residents to

rebuild repeatedly. That hardship turned out to be a gift. Brick replaced wood, and the result is a downtown that still feels solid, intentional, and beautifully intact more than a century later.

You don’t have to read a plaque to feel the history here—it's in the way the buildings line the street, the narrow sidewalks that make you walk slower, and the way the town seems to encourage conversation rather than efficiency.

Nevada City wasn’t designed to be cute for visitors. It simply grew up, stayed stubborn, and aged well.

Downtown is where that personality really shows. Broad Street is the heart of the town, but the magic happens when you let yourself drift. Pop into a bookstore because the window display catches your eye. Wander through a gallery you didn’t plan on visiting. Follow live music down

a side street and see where it leads.

Nevada City rewards curiosity quietly and without fanfare.

One of the town’s crown jewels is the Nevada Theatre, which opened its doors in 1865 and still hosts performances today. Even standing outside, it’s impossible not to imagine the decades of laughter, applause, and dramatic monologues that have echoed through its walls. It’s not a relic—it’s a living piece of the town, still doing exactly what it was built to do.

And then there’s Victorian Christmas. On select December evenings, the streets glow with old-style lamps, costumed carolers wander past singing familiar tunes, vendors sell sweets and handmade goods, and the whole town feels like it’s stepped into a snow globe—minus the snow. The smell of roasted treats 61

hangs in the air, kids weave through the crowd wide-eyed, and adults forget, at least temporarily, that they have inboxes waiting for them at home. It’s festive without being overwhelming, theatrical without feeling forced, and genuinely joyful in a way that sneaks up on you.

When it comes to food and drink, Nevada City punches well above its weight. This is a town where meals aren’t rushed, and drinks aren’t an afterthought. Historic restaurants and cozy bars invite you to linger, to order one more round, to talk a little longer than planned.

Friar Tuck’s Restaurant & Bar is a longtime local favorite, blending classic comfort with a sense of occasion that fits its historic setting. Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co. draws a steady crowd with good beer, satisfying food, and an easygoing atmosphere, making it a natural gathering spot. And if your idea of travel includes at least one excellent cocktail in a beautiful old room, Golden Era Cocktail Bar & Lounge delivers. It’s the kind of place where the lighting is flattering, the drinks are thoughtful, and live music makes the night feel like it’s unfolding exactly as it should.

One of the best things about dining here is that you don’t need a rigid plan.

Nevada City is small enough—and good enough—that you can trust your instincts.

Pick a place because it looks warm from the outside, because you hear laughter through the door, or because someone at the next table recommends it. Odds are, you’ll eat well.

As charming as downtown is, Nevada City also makes a strong case for stepping outside its brick-lined streets. Nature is never far here, and it shows up in ways that feel dramatic without being intimidating. Deer Creek still threads through the town, offering a constant reminder of why people settled here in the first place.

Just outside town, Empire Mine State Historic Park tells the story of hard-rock mining on a scale that’s hard to wrap your head around. This wasn’t romanticized prospecting—it was an industrial operation that stretched underground for hundreds of miles. Walking the grounds 62

gives you a new appreciation for the ambition, labor, and sheer stubbornness that defined the era.

Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park offers a different kind of lesson. Once the site of California’s largest hydraulic gold mine, it’s now a striking reminder of how dramatically humans can reshape the land. The landscape is rugged and beautiful, but it also tells a quieter story about consequence and change.

For a more relaxed outdoor experience, the South Yuba River area delivers in spades. The Bridgeport Covered Bridge is one of those places that feels instantly iconic—the kind of spot where you slow down automatically, take photos without embarrassment, and wonder how many people crossed it before you. Pack a picnic, bring layers, and plan to stay longer than you expect. Nevada City has a habit of stretching time.

What surprised me most wasn’t the beauty or the history—it was the confidence. Nevada City isn’t trying to impress you. It doesn’t use charm or hustle to gain attention. It simply offers itself, quietly assured that if you’re paying attention, you’ll get it.

You feel it in the way the town honors its past without being stuck in it. You feel it in the creative energy that hums just under the surface. And you really feel it at night, when the streets soften under lamplight, and you realize you’ve been walking longer than planned because you didn’t want to stop.

If you visit in December, Victorian Christmas adds a layer of magic that feels communal and sincere. If you come in January, you’ll find something just as appealing: quieter streets, crisp air, warm meals, and trails that remind you the foothills don’t need an event to be stunning.

Nevada City delivers what the best travel destinations always do—a feeling. It offers the sense that you’ve stepped into something a little richer, a little more vivid, and a lot more human than your usual routine. And once you’ve felt it, you’ll start looking for excuses to come back.
