Happy Confident Smiles

DR.

Srishti Mehta, founder of local Indigo Orthodontics, has been creating happy, confident smiles since 2007. “It’s about more than just braces or straight teeth,” explains Dr. Mehta. “We change how people feel about themselves. I remember treating an eight-year-old girl with a very big overbite, such that she never smiled for pictures or otherwise, and she was very shy and reserved… in her shell. After treatment, her smile was transformed and beautiful. Her confidence in herself had changed, and she found the ability to interact with friends at school. This story is not the exception. Many, many parents tell me how orthodontic treatment changed their child’s selfconfidence and behavior. These stories reaffirm my belief in what we do for each of our patients!”

The Indigo Difference

At Indigo Orthodontics, Dr. Mehta and Dr. Angelica Herrera are highly skilled professionals with years of experience. Cutting-edge orthodontic technology and attention to detail are of the utmost importance at this state-of-the-art facility. Dr. Mehta says, “Dr. Herrera and I work together as a team, treating patients together and creating treatment plans together. Nothing is cookie-cutter. After a thorough oral assessment, every treatment plan is specific and customized to the patient’s needs and goals. The overall value of orthodontics is increasing in all areas of health, not just among dental providers. When needed, we collaborate with other providers, including ENTs, chiropractors, therapists, myofunctional therapists, pediatricians, and of course your dentist. We are committed to a child’s health. Considerable health benefits of orthodontic treatment can include better oral/gum health and better breathing. Better breathing leads to better sleep. We strive for a pretty smile in a healthy body.”

Under the leadership of Dr. Mehta, the Indigo Orthodontics team is always seeking continuing education…knowledge they can bring back to patients to improve both their health and their smiles. Languages spoken include English, Spanish, and Hindi. “Our culture is 100% commitment to excellent and patient care first,” says Dr. Mehta.

Ages and Treatment Types

At Indigo Orthodontics, Dr. Mehta and Dr. Herrera treat kids, teens, and adults. Dr. Mehta says, “We recommend that children receive their first orthodontic consultation by or before age seven. Not every kid needs treatment. Children that don’t require treatment are monitored through our follow-up recall program. Your child returns for a follow-up evaluation free of charge, providing the best opportunity to intervene at the right time. That’s how much I value early intervention.”

Treatment types include metal braces, gold braces, ceramic braces, Invisalign, and InBrace (braces on the inside).

While referrals are welcome, they are not necessary. Dr. Mehta says, “If you feel you or your child could benefit from orthodontic treatment, give us a call.”

Affordability

Indigo Orthodontics offers in-office payment plans with no credit checks, no interest, and no fees involved. Most insurance plans are accepted. “Financially, our goal is to provide the care you or your child needs,” explains Dr. Mehta.

When she’s not transforming smiles, Dr. Mehta enjoys spending time with her two daughters. They keep busy shopping together, traveling, binging NetFlix, and playing squash. “We’re staying with the times and learning to love pickleball too!” laughs Dr. Mehta.

Don’t Wait Till It Hurts

Local dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte D.D.S., says, “It’s no secret. A lot of you out there have had bad experiences with dentists. You just don’t like to go…so you put it off. In my experience, individuals often end up with worse problems when they wait until it hurts. I encourage you to go now before you’re in this situation.”

We know what you’re thinking: This sounds great, but now you’re afraid. It’s been quite some time since you’ve seen a dentist, and you’re sure that your teeth will be the worse Dr. Lomonte has ever seen. Dr. Lomonte smiles, “In nearly all instances, this is just not the case. With a little maintenance and repair, most people’s teeth are actually just fine!”

If you’ve been told, or you believe, that all of your teeth need to be replaced, Dr. Lomonte encourages you to come in and

see what options you have. “You might just need a few crowns and fillings, and maybe an implant or two,” explains Dr. Lomonte. “And don’t let the prospect of an implant scare you. Today’s implants are relatively simple and inexpensive. The technique and materials are so much better than they were even just a few years ago. Modern implants enjoy a success rate of over 95% and having them done is not terribly uncomfortable. Most patients can’t believe how easy it is, and many are fine with just taking Advil.”

Dr. Lomonte is committed to staying up-to-date on the latest in technology and procedures in the constantly evolving field of dentistry. “My mission is to offer pain-free dental solutions whenever possible. I want everyone to walk out of my office smiling, each and every time.”

Don’t wait till it hurts. Schedule your appointment with Dr. Lomonte today!

Summer Injuries

For most Texans, summer means fun in the sun. But it’s also the time of year when fun-seeking kids and adults are most likely to be injured. Dr. Shannon Orsak, founder of local St. Michael’s Elite Hospital, says, “Summer’s a wonderful time of year. But here in the medical world, we see distinct patterns to summer injuries. Many that could be easily prevented!”

up with your primary care doctor, urgent care, or an ER…because things could get worse. An electrolyte imbalance can cause a cardiac or neuro event to occur.”

While it’s most prevalent in the summer months, heat exhaustion can happen at any time. “If you can, run or exercise early in the morning or late in the evening. You can also put a cool rag behind the neck or under the arms. It’s also important to note that your car can be nearly 50 degrees hotter than the outside temperature on a summer day. Never leave kids or pets in the car.”

Here too, supervision is key. And don’t forget about the sun. Sunblock is a must for both yourself and your child when spending time outdoors.”

Drowning

It’s not like in the movies, there’s no wild flailing and commotion. Dr. Orsak says, “A child will simply slide into the water, very silently and very quickly. Drowning and adult supervision go hand-in-hand. Swim lessons and life jackets are both invaluable, but they are not a substitute for supervision.”

Heat Exhaustion

Whether you’re out exercising or just hanging out, always be aware of the heat and humidity. “Make sure your body stays cool,” explains Dr. Orsak. “Symptoms of heat exhaustion including vomiting, nausea, or dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t ignore it. Follow

Burns

Fireworks, barbeques, and the sun itself are all integral parts of a Texas summer. “Parents, keep the heat away from the kids,” says Dr. Orsak. “Teach children to respect fireworks and fires.

Helmets

Children and adults should wear helmets when biking, skating, skateboarding, or riding scooters, allterrain vehicles, and horses. “A lot of parents and children think of scrapes and bruises as badges of honor...and maybe they are!” says Dr. Orsak. “But a traumatic brain injury is no badge of honor. Wear a helmet.”

“I wish you all a happy summer,” says Dr. Orsak. “Take care and stay healthy!”

Star-Studded Event Traumatized Benefits Children

Champions Kids Camp (CKC), founded by Bill and Kim Nash of Fort Bend County, held its largest ever annual fundraiser, Texas Best Music Fest (TBMF), Sunday afternoon, June 11, 2023 at Mo’s place in Katy. The camp was founded by the Nash’s in 2001 with a mission to nurture children who have survived a traumatic injury, illness or personal loss of a parent or sibling. Bill says “Kim and I created CKC to honor our son Billy, who survived childhood leukemia.”

This year’s fundraiser raised the most money ever in CKC’s 21-year history. Texas Best Music Fest, sponsored by the Classic Elite family of dealerships, was emceed by Houston TV personality, Debra Duncan, and Fulshear Katy Area Chamber President and CEO, Don McCoy. This star-studded event kicked off with an invocation by the highly regarded Dodie Osteen. Musical talent included Hayden Baker who was recently signed by Ronnie Dunn of Brooks and Dunn, Mary Sarah from the Voice’s “Team Blake,” Jimmy Nash, co-writer of “Quicksand” by American Blonde, Marilyn Savage Martinez singing “Old Time Rock and Roll,” plus Bill and Kim Nash. Bill and Kim are Grammy-award winning artists and songwriters with songs recorded by Reba McEntire, Diamond Rio, Dolly Parton and others. Music was interspersed with a live auction–including boxing gloves

signed by Termite Watkins and his student Jasie G.—raising funds for CKC. Near the end of the event, Bill brought several CKC “Champions” to the stage. These are young adults who attended camp as children and were so transformed, they’ve returned each year thereafter. The afternoon concluded with a powerful collaboration by all of the artists.

CKC Board Member Jerry Parks says, “I’ve known and followed Bill’s singing career for

more than 47 years. Champions Kids Camp is Bill and Kim’s lifelong dream! Myself and many others are honored and humbled to help them fulfill these dreams. It’s really heartwarming, as well as rewarding, to help these kids. We couldn’t do it without everyone’s support. Thank you all so much for supporting CKC and TBMF over the years.”

The Classic Elite family of dealerships includes Classic Elite Chevy Sugar Land, Classic Elite Chevy Hwy 6 and Classic Elite Buick GMC on the Katy Freeway. Classic Elite owners, Tiffany and Jeff Sebastian, say, “For more than two decades, CKC has helped thousands of kids move past their trauma. We are proud to be a small part of raising funds for such a worthy, local charity. Champions Kids Camp is truly helping kids get past what they can never get over. Texas Best Music Fest was an afternoon to remember and will be back again next summer. We can’t wait to see you all again!”

Home Repiped By His Trusted Plumbing Company of 30+ Years

Local Alan’s Plumbing was founded by Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter more than 30 years ago. Mr. Gibson has done business with Alan since before Alan was in business for himself. “Alan is honest and upfront,” says Mr. Gibson. “He’s never in a hurry. It’s never get in and get out as fast as you can. Alan’s Plumbing has replaced every fixture in my house, replaced lines to the fixtures, replaced my sink with a stainless steel sink, and more.”

In 2016, Alan’s Plumbing repiped Mr. Gibson’s house. “I had a leak in the utility room,” explains Mr. Gibson. “At the time, my roof leaked once in a while during a storm when the wind blew just right…so I had to determine if the leak was my roof or the plumbing. When I finally decided it was the plumbing, I called Alan’s Plumbing. Alan’s son Luke came out quickly. We determined the best route was to replace my galvanized pipes with PEX pipe. That was midweek, and Alan’s Plumbing repiped my house that weekend.”

Who should consider repiping? Luke says, “If your home was built before 1980, you most likely have old, galvanized pipes. Be on the lookout for leaks, discoloration, stains, flaking, or dimpling. If you see many of these signs, or multiple instances of one of them, it’s likely your pipes are galvanized pipes and need to be replaced. Leaks

are especially bright red flags. We can repipe your house, installing new PEX pipe on all of your supply lines. This pipe will expand if frozen and contract to its original shape when thawed. PEX pipe is clean and rust free. This means it doesn’t corrode, and will not contaminate the water it’s moving and holding. No corrosion also results in an increase in water pressure. And because they do not burst, some insurance companies offer breaks to homes with PEX piping.”

Like his dad, Luke is a Master Plumber. Alan’s team also includes Alan’s brother, Master Plumber Chris, his son Beau (journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license), his son Jake (an apprentice close to his journeyman license), journeyman-licensed plumber Jaime and tradesman-licensed Trevor and Christian. Longtime family friend Katie McFarland is the voice behind the Alan’s Plumbing phones, a job Alan’s wife Jennifer held for three decades. Mr. Gibson laughs, “I like to call and heckle Jennifer once in a while! But in all seriousness, I like to deal with people who answer their phone. I do

not want to press 1 for this and 2 for that. When you call Alan’s Plumbing, you get a live person.”

“I’ve been recommending Alan’s Plumbing for as long as I’ve known them,” continues Mr. Gibson. “They repiped my neighbor’s home this past year and the house on the corner a few months before that. I see them in the neighborhood all the time!”

Two Bathrooms

in Three Weeks!

When Cindy and John were ready to update their master bathroom and hall bathroom, they scoured the area for designers. John says, “This house is more than 40 years old. We wanted to make radical changes. In the master bathroom, we wanted to knock down a wall, move a door, replace the shower with a walk-in shower, and rearrange the location of the counter and sinks. We visited every place we could find and even checked the phonebook. We found a lot of contractors, but no designers. We had read about Teri Gilberg (better known as The Re-Modelista) in UpClose magazine and several flyers. Teri offers the services of designer Louise Ostrander as part of her projects, so we gave her a call.”

“Teri is very enthusiastic about what she does,” continues Cindy. “She was able to answer all of our questions immediately. For every request, the answer was, ‘No problem, we’ll take care of that.’ We saw Louise three times. On the first visit, we discussed colors and different designs. Then Louise accompanied us to the store to pick out samples. We called on Louise one more time to discuss mirror design and placement, and the placement of one cabinet. She did a great job.”

John says, “When you do a big remodeling project, things change. Teri had a supervisor on-site, and she also visited each day. We always had someone to talk to and clarify things. After the barn doors were up on the closet, we thought we’d like to add mirrors to the front and back. We suggested it to Teri, and she took care of it. She measured and had a mirror guy bring the mirrors out and install them. Her crew is spectacular. They didn’t bother us, they were polite, and they got the job done. The craftsmen were terrific, espe-

cially the tile guy. They were open to questions, and also asked us questions and made suggestions. If we didn’t like something, it was changed with no argu ment. Teri’s crews did exactly what we asked and more. They were very adaptable and made sure everything was done the right way. They were perfect.”

Teri’s estimate for the project was five weeks. “We were going on vacation, so this wasn’t going to work for us,” explains Cindy. “Teri had a solution. They did both bathrooms simultaneously. Teri also asked if they could work the weekend, and we gladly did that to finish the job. Everything was finished in just three weeks. We are very happy with the finished product. We were sorry we had to immediately go on vacation and haven’t had a chance to enjoy the new bathrooms!”

any people don’t realize they have absolute discretion over which pharmacist to use,” says Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. of local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “Texas law guarantees you that choice. When one patient, one physician, and one pharmacist work together to keep you in peak, running condition, that is an unbeatable triad. The ‘three Ps’ is what I call it. Whether your goal is to look younger, feel better, or simply keep your family healthy, by working together, we can help you accomplish your goals.”

Dr. Campbell opened Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy back in 2003. This pharmacy prides itself on customer service by providing a family feel. His entire team–Dr. Omar Alkazzaz, Dr. Danny Thai, and Dr. Lisa Mathew–met Dr. Campbell when they did rotations with him as students at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. After working with each, Dr. Campbell handselected them to be on staff at the pharmacy. “It’s important to me that everyone here believes in

treating customers like family,” says Dr. Campbell. “I truly believe I have the best team around.”

Not only is this a team of highly skilled pharmacists, it’s also a team of parents. “Compounded medication can be very beneficial for kids,” explains Dr. Campbell. “All too often, children are prescribed smaller ‘guesstimated’ dosages of adult medications, which may or may not be height/weight appropriate for them. The operative word in compounding is custom design. Our team of licensed pharmacists combine, mix, or alter the ingredients of a drug to create a medication tailored to the needs of the indivi dual patient. We can ‘edit out’ fillers or dyes, change the flavor, or create a gel, a cream, a pill, a suppository, a gummy, or even a lollipop form of medication. Compounded medications aren’t mass-produced approximations. They’re specific to your family’s needs. They’re great for kids, senior adults, pets, those who struggle swallowing

At Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, you’ll find a dedication to providing a level of care and service to patients that is unmatched in the Fort Bend and Greater Houston area. “We are so thankful for our family at Campbell’s Compounding and for each and every one of you!” says Dr. Campbell.

Angela and Paul Ward’s Story

Angela Ward’s long term relationship with Keller Williams Southwest (KWSW) agent Sharon Parker began with a cold call. “We go way back to December of 2018,” says Angela. “Back then, I had been pondering selling my first home, but I wasn’t quite sure. Sharon called, and we discussed how people were buying in my area. She asked if I was interested in making a profit. We set a time to meet, and Sharon came to look at my house. I was impressed. Sharon is thorough, friendly, reliable, and honest…which is really important in the real estate industry. We sold that home, and from there, our relationship has evolved.”

When Angela became engaged to Paul, Sharon helped sell Paul’s home. After the couple got

married, Sharon helped Angela and Paul buy their new home together. To date, Sharon has helped Paul and Angela buy and sell more than 10 properties. Angela says, “We’ve purchased townhomes, downtown condominiums, and other projects using Sharon’s services. We remodel them, then Sharon helps us sell them. Sharon is extremely dependable. We don’t have to worry if she’s on our side. When it comes to negotiating, we know she will fight for us. Sharon’s also creative. If one thing doesn’t work, she tries another method. Sharon gets the deal done.”

“I’ve recommended Sharon many times,” continues Angela. “She’s so knowledgeable. Recently, an acquaintance was having issues with her home. She wanted to protect it from foreclosure. Sharon was able to walk her through it and assist her. Sharon’s tenacity and passion for what she does is reflected in her work ethic and the level of service she provides. She’s great!”

Co-chair Scott West says, “It’s one event, and it will be fabulous. While you only need to attend once, you can give twice as much!” The proceeds of this event are shared between the Sugar Land Fire and EMS and the Sugar Land Police departments to meet their specific requests, including funding life-saving equipment, educational opportunities, and meeting the urgent needs of our finest and bravest families. This very first Red & Blue United, co-chaired by KK and Scott West and Debbie and Marvin

We Have A Better Way To Handle Your Bug PROBLEM

Are you swatting flies, stomping roaches, and chasing rodents? There’s a better way! Some things are best left to the professionals… and that includes pest control.

If you have unwanted house guests, it’s time to call local BUGCO Pest Control. Founded more than a decade ago by President and CEO John Onofrey and Executive VP of Company Operations Chris Millward, today

BUGCO Pest Control has grown to more than 40 employees, 29 trucks, and expanded from here to Galveston to Corpus Christi to San Antonio and up to the Dallas Metroplex. It’s certified as a Service-Disabled VeteranOwned Small Business. Treatment options include general pest control, roaches, ter mites, fire ants, bed bugs, fleas, ticks, and rodents both commercially and residentially. BUGCO also has strategies for controlling mosquitoes, including installation and main tenance of mosquito misting systems, truckmounted fogging, and backpack fogging.

What sets BUGCO apart? It’s locally owned and built on the core principles of honor and integrity. Chris says, “We do what we say we’re going to do, and our customers keep coming back because of it...no contract. It’s that time of year. The bugs are thick

and door-to-door salespeople are relentlessly trying to convince you to sign up for pest control. The people coming to your door are

just that: salespeople. They will say or do anything to get your signature on a contract and collect their commission. Often these contracts include hidden fees and a penalty for trying to get out of the contract. Never sign a contract without all prices and warranties in writing. Door-to-door pest control sales are a scam. Google them. You’ll find dozens of 1-star reviews where homeowners are complaining about what was sold to them as part of the contract vs. what was delivered. And then they were penalized for trying to end that contract.”

But wait, don’t all pest control companies require a contract? “Actually, no,” explains John. “Here at BUGCO, we never enter into a contract with our customers. We create service agreements. This agreement outlines the services we agreed upon and our pricing. There are no hidden or surprise fees. If at any point you have questions, you can give us a call or access your account through our online customer portal. Most importantly, you are free to cancel the service agreement at any time without penalty.”

Pest free is the way to be. Put away the fly swatters and stop stomping the bugs…call BUGCO Pest Control today!

As Simple as a Day at the Beach

Every new parent experiences anxiety over taking their kids to the dentist, especially for the first time. And oftentimes, the kids pick up on that anxiety. There is a better way. At local Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, Dr. Faisal M. Khan, DDS makes going to the dentist as simple as a day at the beach!

As a father of three, Dr. Khan really “gets” the whole kid thing. He says, “Parents ask me all the time to give them dental advice. There’s one thing I always recommend: Start them young. That’s why the American Dental Association strongly urges parents to get ‘well baby checkups’ with a qualified pediatric dentist as early as six months, but no later than a child’s first birthday. Besides checking for tooth decay, we can show you how to clean your child’s teeth properly and help you ward off bad habits such as thumbsucking. Most importantly, your child will be familiar with me, my staff, and the office...not scared and timid when he or she comes in for a visit.”

Not only will your child not be scared, they’ll love the beachy vibe at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. This office is a playground paradise for kids of all ages. There’s a movie theater to enjoy while you wait. Fish, octopus, turtles, and sharks— plus character favorites like Ariel and Sebastian, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and Moana—colorfully adorn the walls. Children that do well during treatment are rewarded with prizes.

With a lazy, flexible schedule, summer is the perfect time to take the kids to the dentist. At Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, Dr. Khan has more than 20 orange and white examination surfboards and two additional doctors on staff: Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik and Dr. Annie Zheng. Parents with multiple children can get their teeth cleaned at the same time. It’s as simple as a day at the beach!

I would change out the art by doing it myself, and my mother helped sew new bedding. I’ve always had a yearning for design.”

After attending college to become a science museum curator and a two-decade career as a science teacher, word got around about Caron’s skilled eye. In 1983, she started spending her summers and breaks providing interior design services. “My passion is uncovering the story of your life and expressing it through your decor. I’m very creative, and I hardly ever say, ‘No.’ My part-time business quickly grew to full-time, and this year we are excited to be expanding to a new building. We’re renaming the business Grand Interiors and Window Fashion, where we provide painting, faux painting, metalwork, stone or brickwork, tile, custom cabinetry, fabric, and more. We customcreate exactly the look you want down to a new style and design plan, colorways, the drapery or window coverings, upholstery, and area rugs. My husband Candelario also offers motorized 20 ft roller shades for the patio…allowing you to screen in your patio only when you want to. My design consultant and administrative assistant Joni Britton has been with me since 2009. We can do your entire home or make just the right changes to what you

already have!”

As a Hunter Douglas Showcase Dealer, Caron has dedicated one showroom exclusively to Hunter Douglas window fashions: premium, intelligent window fashions that combine gorgeous fabrics with smart technology to beautifully transform natural light, enhance your home’s interiors, and make everyday living easier. “Hunter Douglas is the industry leader in innovation,” says Caron. “With a ton of products, there’s something in everyone’s price range. You can choose simple blinds or shutters, or opt for all the bells and whistles, including motorized shades that can be put on a schedule. Hunter Douglas’s energy-efficient designs are made using the industry’s finest fabrics in on-trend colors, textures, and designs. You really can’t go wrong with Hunter Douglas.”

Do you have hard-to-cover windows? “Trapezoid windows come in all sorts of configurations and angles,” continues Caron. “The Hunter Douglas Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Pirouette® and Silhouette® Window Shadings, Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, Everwood® Alternative Wood Blinds, and Parkland® Window Blinds are all attractive options. This year Candelario and Caron celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. “It’s a year of new beginnings,” says Caron. “Our son Lewis got married, and our daughter Allyson’s jazz band, 1810 Ojeband, is recording their first album in Houston in August.” Caron’s been in business for more than 30 years. “I’m excited to keep doing what I love in our new building under our new name. Together, we’ll create changes in your home that make a big difference!”
