America’s Proud Past

We the People

The Exchange Club of Sugar Land works together to make our community a better place to live. Club President Lori Bisewski says, “We actively search for creative ways to respectfully meet the needs of others while focusing on the prevention of child abuse, our youth, community service, and Americanism. As part of the Americanism program, our club provides a Freedom Shrine to at least one school or public facility each year. This May, thanks to Americanism committee members Bruce Smith, Nick Landoski, Pete Olson, and Betty Baitland, we were privileged to dedicate a Freedom Shrine at both Lakeview Elementary and Anne McCormick Sullivan Elementary.”

What is a Freedom Shrine? It’s an impressive, permanently-mounted collection of 30 of the most important and historic American documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and the Gettysburg Address. These remarkable documents serve as windows to the world of America’s proud past. They show our nation’s youth the strength and courage of their forefathers by allowing them to read, with their own eyes, the immortal words of inspired Americans who so decisively changed the course of history.

“This is history that every student in every school needs to know about,” says past President and club Treasurer Paul Barnett. “The overall objective of Exchange is to install a Freedom Shrine in every school

in our nation. Freedom Shrines can also be found in other places of honor. There’s one located in Sugar Land City Hall. We like to place them anywhere there are people!”

Exchange is an all-volunteer, national service organization for men and women who want to serve their community, develop leadership skills, and enjoy new friendships. To learn more about Exchange Club of Sugar Land, visit www.ecsl.org.

Introducing

The Family of Dealerships

For many years, the people of Fort Bend and beyond have enjoyed the VIP experience provided by Jeff and Tiffany Sebastion at their two Classic Chevy locations (Sugar Land and HWY 6). Tiffany says, “None of that is changing. In an effort to further distinguish ourselves, we are rebranding our stores to the Classic Elite name, where we will continue taking what we do to the next level. It’s an elite, red carpet dealer experience.”

But that’s not all. On May 3rd, after months of hard work, Tiffany and Jeff added the GMC, Buick, Hummer line to the Classic Elite family. “We wanted to give our loyal customers another option and another location,” explains Jeff. “Classic Elite Buick GMC is located at I-10 and Barker Cypress. Adding a store on the Katy Freeway allows us to serve all of Katy, West Houston, Sugar Land, Richmond, Rosenberg, and beyond. The service departments at each of our three locations can take care of Chevys, GMCs, and all makes and models of vehicles. I encourage you to visit the location that’s most convenient to your home or office for all of your vehicle needs.”

Thinking of purchasing a new car? Now is the time. Tiffany says, “For the next few months, inventory will not be a problem for us at Classic Elite. We will be receiving a special allotment of new Buicks and GMCs, a far greater amount than any other GMC dealer. Inventory will be at an all-time high, and it’s the perfect time to buy. If you have a trade-in or a car to sell, the market is strong. Your vehicle will be worth more than you think, and we are buying cars. Stop by any of the dealerships for a free appraisal.”

The teams at Classic Elite are the best in the business. Want to join this great work culture? Tiffany and Jeff are always looking for good people. For years, they’ve employed more

than 400 individuals in our community. The addition of Classic Elite Buick GMC allows them to provide even more career opportunities in the automotive space. “If you’re ready for your new career, come see us today!” says Jeff.

“Thank you so much for trusting us for all these years. We love our customers, and we’re so excited about the opportunity to serve you even more!”

For Your Yard (And More)

Jason Houston has been doing landscaping and yard maintenance since he was very young. “Together with my dad and cousin, I did landscaping in Quail Valley many years ago. Then I went on to become a law enforcement officer. For years, I worked for the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, and I also worked extra duty security to make ends meet. Five years ago, I grew tired of the extra jobs… so I decided to do something different. I got back into doing lawn maintenance.”

“My father-in-law gave me my equipment to get started: a lawn mower, weed eater, and handheld blower,” continues Jason. “Then I bought additional equipment and materials little by little with each extra paycheck. Lawn maintenance progressed to landscaping and pavers, and then hardscapes, artificial turf, and more. I was able to leave my full time job at the sheriff’s office. Today, I only police in a small town on the weekend. The rest of the week, I get my hands dirty. At Fort Bend Construction, Landscape, and Grounds, we handle anything and everything a yard consists of, including sod tear outs, reconstructing flower beds, plant replacement, concrete work, mulch and gravel, and more.”

A self-described “old-school’ guy, Jason’s crews still use a push mower for small yards before weed-eating, edging, and bagging everything for you. Sod tear outs are done by hand and dumped for you. Even better, your new sod is fresh from the farm. “This sod hasn’t been sitting on a pallet for a

week,” explains Jason. “The farm we work with cuts it when we order it, and we install it within 24 hours so that it bounces back quickly.”

Is your side yard always squishy and muddy? Fort Bend Construction, Landscape, and Grounds installs pavers the right way. Jason says, “We take out the soil, put down a base, then put in and space your pavers of choice. The spaces in between are filled with black or white gravel.”

Today, artificial turf in the yard is extremely popular. Jason says, “It’s low maintenance and easy. Artificial turf requires no fertilizer, no cutting, and no water. You can vacuum it, sweep it, or blow it off with a handheld blower. The particular turf we use comes with a lifetime warranty. We’ve installed lots of putting greens, and it’s perfect for playscapes…no bugs, ants, or critters. Our most recent turf installation was for a backyard bocce ball court. The possibilities are endless!”

Born and raised in Missouri City, Jason has lived in Quail Valley for nearly all of his life. His next goal for Fort Bend Construction, Landscape, and Grounds is to open a mulch, sand, soil, and gravel yard in Missouri City that will be managed by his wife, Norma. Jason says, “Thank you to our community for your tremendous support since day one. Without you, we would not exist!”

Earning Your Business

The Old-Fashioned Way

With the dawn of the internet and subsequently social media, we are bombarded daily with advertisements for anything and everything. Google a plumber, and for weeks you’ll see ads for plumbers in the area. Don’t trust the internet. When you need a plumber, call local Alan’s Plumbing…where for 30 years, they’ve been earning the business of you and your neighbors the old-fashioned way.

“Honest work at fair and transparent prices,” explains Alan’s Plumbing founder, Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. “It’s as simple as that. All of our team members live in this community. You are more than a customer to us, you’re family. My boys played ball with your boys. My own grandfather helped build the San Jacinto monument. He believed in core values and integrity, and he passed these ideals on to us. My fam-

ily has done more than just put down roots here. We’re Texans. That’s why we care so much about the work we do for you. We’re your neighbors as well as your plumbers, and we are accountable to no one but you. As a family-owned and operated company, we keep our overhead low and pass those savings on to you. Our teams arrive on time, and we get the job done right the first time. We leave your house clean, if not cleaner, than we found it. We do what we say we’re going to do, within the time we say we’re going to do it. We do not make pie-in-the-sky promises that no one can deliver on. Call me old-fashioned, but this is what works.”

Back in the beginning, the Alan’s Plumbing team was only Alan and his brother, Master Plumber Chris. Today, Alan and his wife Jennifer’s boys are no longer playing ball, they’re integral members of the Alan’s Plumbing crew. Luke is also a Master

Plumber, Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license, and Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. This dynamic team also includes journeyman-licensed plumber Jaime and tradesman-licensed Trevor and Christian. Longtime family friend Katie McFarland is the voice behind the Alan’s Plumbing phones.

The next time you need a plumber, don’t trust Google or social media to make a sound recommendation. From dripping faucets, running toilets, and clogged drains to a worn-out water heater, outdated bathroom fixtures, plumbing emergencies, and more… call the plumber that’s earned Fort Bend’s trust for three decades and counting: Alan’s Plumbing.

From Dinosaur Teeth Residential Construction

Matt Lomonte says, “My dad was always repairing or building something when I was growing up. I picked up building and repairing things as a kid.”

After graduating from Texas A&M, Matt spent some time working as a project manager for an electric company in China. In January of 2019, he moved home to launch Paramount Construction…where Matt makes your home everything you ever wanted it to be. “We specialize in all aspects of residential construction,” explains Matt. “Anything from basic home repair and remodeling to complete ground-up builds. We work with you to bring your visions to reality. No matter the project, there is nothing we can’t handle. And we guarantee all of our work.”

Interestingly, Matt’s dad’s specialty is not construction…it’s teeth. Dr. Thomas Lomonte has been practicing dentistry in Stafford since 1982. “He’s been a dentist for as long as I can remember,” says Matt. “And of course he’s MY dentist. I had dinosaur teeth as a kid. Using braces, Invisalign, and a retainer, Dad took care of it. I have straight and pretty teeth now!”

Whether you have dinosaur teeth or really nice teeth that merely require biannual cleanings, Dr. Lomonte is Fort Bend’s dentist of choice. He treats both adults and children from the simplest fillings to cosmetic reconstruction. He has been practicing long enough that he now sees second and third generation patients. Many of his patients have watched Matt grow up. Dr. Lomonte says, “Nothing brings me greater joy than sharing the stories of children. I love to hear how my patients’ children are doing, and I also enjoy giving them updates on my children! My patients are my friends.” Of course, Dr. Lomonte gladly welcomes new patients as well.

Great Snakes, He’s Done Everything!

Back in 1983, Rick and Terry Cochran started a piano moving company. Today, Fort Bend Music Center has grown to a full-line music store with a band department and on-site service shop, and a lessons studio offering music lessons of all types. It’s one of the largest Yamaha piano dealers in the nation.

While Rick and Terry were growing Fort Bend Music Center, they were also growing a family. Their son Justin says, “I grew up in the store. I spent my summers in the piano repair shop, hanging out and being a helper. The craziest thing I remember is taking a piano apart and finding a dead snake inside of it. I was just a kid at the time, but that memory sticks with me!”

Summer Music Camp

After Justin finished high school, he became a fullfledged employee at the piano repair shop. “Then over the next several years, I jumped around,” laughs Justin. “I have worked in every department in some capacity, learning all aspects of the store. From piano repair, I moved to the band repair shop. Then I was in piano sales, and after that the band and orchestra department. I did one more stint in both piano service and piano sales, before becoming the store’s Operations Manager. That’s my position today. As Operations Manager, I oversee all the departments at Fort Bend Music, keeping my finger on the pulse of each one. Day-to-day, I also help out in the band department.”

This summer, learn more about what Fort Bend Music Center has to offer by signing up from summer music camp. At camp, kids (or adults!) ages 4+ receive the full, immersive musical experience over five days. Each day offers fun, dynamic lessons in piano, strings, brass, and guitar. There are no supplies necessary. These camps are perfect for all levels of musicians, including beginners. Registration fills quickly. Reserve your spot today!

Helping People

One team One focus YOU Feel Better Dr.

Danny Thai was sick a lot as a kid. He says, “I had throat infections, ear infections, and more. When I was really small, I thought I wanted to become a doctor. But then I realized it was not the doctor that was making me feel better, it was the meds. I wanted to help people feel better too, so I became a pharmacist.”

At the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, Dr. Thai was exposed to different fields of pharmacy outside the retail pharmacy world. His interest in compounding was sparked by a compounding course he took during his second year of school. To ensure that compounding was his passion, Dr. Thai did a rotation with Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy.

“Compounding is really interesting,” explains Dr. Thai. “When we compound a medication, it’s individualized…not mass produced. A medication can be made in a specific strength, or without certain

ingredients. This is especially beneficial to patients that might be allergic to an ingredient.” Compounding is also a great option for kids and other individuals who struggle swallowing pills. Required medications can be compounded as a liquid, and they can even be flavored. It’s great for pets as well! With compounding, everything is completely customizable.

“I knew after that rotation that compounding was what I wanted to do after I graduated,” continues Dr. Thai. “Unfortunately, at the time Dr. Campbell was not hiring. I let him know that I was interested, and to keep my resume. I went to work for Walgreens for six months. Then I got the call…and I’ve worked for Campbell’s Compounding ever since.”

That was 10 years ago, and Dr. Thai is still happy with his decision. “I love the stability, and the ability to see behind the scenes of a small business. I consider Dr. Campbell my mentor. He’s very outgoing, and the way that he talks to people

is a gift. He has a mindset for both the pharmacy side and the business side that’s very intriguing. I continue to learn so much from him. I love that at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy I never have to work weekends or major holidays. It allows me to spend time with my beautiful wife and two young children. We enjoy being outside, exploring different parks where the kids can play!”

Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy also stocks all commercially available medications. It’s truly our one-stop, friendly, neighborhood pharmacy. Visit today!

o you feel your wooden fence posts don’t last as long as they used to? “You’re right,” says local Tim’s Fences owner Tim Weyand. “The treatment of the wood has changed so much, they don’t last. They’re prone to rotting, splitting, warping, and breaking in high winds.”

“To remedy the problem, we recommend metal posts for your wooden fence,” continues Tim. “These posts hold up longer, and they’re a great investment. Your fence pickets will still be wood, and inline with your HOA’s requirements (if needed). If you need help with HOA approval, give us a call, and we’ll help you fill out the application.”

This year, Tim’s Fences celebrates 25 years of custom fence building in Fort Bend County and The Greater Houston Area. “I didn’t do this alone,” says Tim. “I’m really excited about the team I have here. Mandy and Chelly run the front office, and they’re the voices you’ll speak to when you call. Chelly has been with me for more than eight years. My General Manager Taylor Bassett takes responsibility when I’m out of pocket… allowing me to take a back seat to some of the day-to-day tasks. Ismail and Pablo run the shop.

They’re multi-faceted guys that can fabricate and install. They do amazing things, and we often put them through the ringer when we need special builds. Ismail has been with me for more than a decade. Our yard guy Johnathan is fantastic, pulling the stuff needed to get ready for the next week. Aldo is a great helper, and we have a couple of wonderful, young account reps. I really rely on this team. Together, we achieve more.”

Wood fences, ornamental iron, chain link, composites, driveway gates, access control, and much more are all in the scope of what the team at Tim’s Fences can do. Curious? Family and Quality: The Secrets To Longevity

In business since 1988, Lone Star Floors has installed floors for families like yours all over southeast Texas. The secret to their longevity is simple: family and quality.

Lone Star Floors is owned by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer, and Imad Mansour. This family has twelve kids between them. That’s 24 pitter-pattering little feet that grew up in their stores. “We used to play games...like go count the red floor samples,” says Mohamed. “They would spend hours doing it, and they would laugh at the silliest things.” Now the kids are growing up, and the grandkids are playing these same games.

The tight-knit Lone Star family extends to you, the customer, and everyone that works for them. “More than 75% of our business is referrals and repeats,” says Ziad. “Because when you work with us, you’re never just a number. We greet you as family every time you walk through our door, even if it’s ten years later. It’s the same with our employees. Many have been with us since the beginning. Part of our family.”

This family-owned and operated business has enjoyed an A+ rating with the BBB every year since its inception. The Sugar Land store opened in 1995, and the Katy and Woodlands stores followed. Both Ziad and Imad installed flooring for ten years prior to opening the store. “For every floor we sell,” says Mohamed, “we install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. There’s no cutting corners, no shortchanging on materials, and job preparation is done correctly. Everything by the book. We might have more than thirty years experience, but we are constantly improving. We strive to give the best quality and experience possible.”

In addition to flooring, Lone Star Floors does full kitchen and bathroom remodeling, outdoor kitchen installations, and lighting. With a multitude of vendors at their fingertips, the Lone Star family can take care of all of your flooring and remodeling needs. Visit today!

Care

Texas Gun Club CEO Jason Short has a local ER and hospital of choice: St. Michael’s Elite Hospital. Jason says, “Both my wife Michaelle and I have visited St. Michael’s for various reasons. We love the quick response…there’s never a wait. And there’s diagnostic testing on-site. After one of our family vacations, I was experiencing some pain after a small injury. When we got home, I visited St. Michael’s, and they were able to do a CT scan in the ER. I got a diagnosis, and I got it quickly. I didn’t have to wait days just to get an appointment. This place is no nonsense. They do what needs to be done, and the service is trauma-level service. The after care is also amazing. The doctor that treated you in the ER personally follows up in the next few days to make sure you are ok, and make follow-up recommendations if necessary. It’s a great place.”

St. Michael’s Elite Hospital was founded by Dr. Shannon Orsak and his brother Brian Orsak. “When you come into our ER,” says Dr. Orsak, “we realize you’re not just a patient. You’re our neighbor. Your kid might play Little League on a team we sponsor. You might be the couple at the table next to my wife and me when we’re out to dinner. We aren’t here to take your money, we are here to be a part of this community. We believe St. Michael’s offers the very best care, the kind we want for our own families.”

Jason, a retired Army Captain and military police officer, and Dr. Orsak are partners at Texas Gun Club. Jason says, “We are a full service gun club, offering proficiency courses, gun sales, a shooting range, a firearm arcade, and more. We’re also proud to be working with researchers at the University of Texas to partner with individuals in the medical field on the best ways to communicate firearm safety and security in the home. Owning a firearm can be safe, fun, friendly, and it can be done responsibly.”

This past Veteran’s Day, Texas Gun Club launched its second location in League City. (The first location is right here in Stafford.) “It’s always exciting to be able to grow,” says Jason. “If you’ve never taken a shot, we’re happy to help with your first firearm. We want to get to know you. We invite you all to drop by and tour our beautiful facility!”

Shaheryar Daudani’s Story

When Mai Colachi owner Shaheryar Daudani was ready to purchase a home in the area, he called on The B & P Team at local Keller Williams Southwest (KWSW). The B & P Team is led by Pinky Pirani and Imran Bhaidani. Shaheryar says, “My brotherin-law works for The B & P Team. I was living in Dallas, where I also own two restaurants. My wife Farzana and I were engaged at the time, and we wanted to purchase a home. With prices going up in this area, I saw purchasing a house here as an investment business opportunity.”

After meeting with Pinky and Imran, Shaheryar decided to buy a new construction home in Richmond. He says, “They made recommendations for a specific builder, and provided advice on picking a plot. Then Pinky and Imran guided me through the process. It was seamless.”

When the home was finished, Shaheryar and Farzana liked it so much, they decided to move in! “In addition to Mai Colachi, I also own Do Darya in Houston. The move here from Dallas just made sense, and it’s a great house! This is now our home.”

Have you been to Mai Colachi? At this full-service dining restaurant, Shaheryar has

created an upscale setting that celebrates the eclectic and inspirational culture of Pakistan. Playing on the unique and diverse traditions of its namesake city, Karachi, Mai Colachi offers a colorful variety of spices, from mild to hot. Shaheryar says, “Our specialties are Pakistani BBQ and karahi. We also have fusion foods on our menu. One of our most popular entrees is our beef short ribs.”

“Pinky and Imran have really helped me market myself and the restaurant in Fort Bend County,” continues Shaheryar. “I’ve landed a lot of catering gigs thanks to their recommendations. Imran and Pinky have also been instrumental in helping the Southeast Asian community understand the difference between owning and renting…transitioning our community from apartment renting to house ownership. I have a lot of respect for Pinky and Imran, and I consider them family.”

Next up for Shaheryar is commercial properties. He says, “I’ve already talked to Imran about options for an additional restaurant. If you need assistance with real estate, I do recommend Pinky and Imran. They’re the best!”

It’s summer! Time for mojitos, naps, and travel plans! Or are you dreading the mosquitoes, gnats, and termites?

“Don’t allow summer pests to ruin your summer,” says local BUGCO Pest Control Executive VP of Company Operations, Chris Millward. “In our area, mosquitoes are a problem…but they don’t have to be! Our mosquito misting systems are a great option. They provide a daily, quick kill of the mosquitoes around the perimeter of your home, yard, or outdoor entertaining area. It operates for very brief periods in the middle of the night when mosquitoes are most active. These systems use a water-based, biodegradable pyrethrum extract from the chrysanthemum flower to effectively control your mosquito nuisance while being safe for kids and pets. We generally set it to spray two to three times per night, and mosquitoes flying or resting are instantly hit with a lethal dose.”

Know what’s really cool? These systems are effective in knocking down other pests as well! “The mist also takes down wasps and spiders,” explains Chris. “If you’re dealing with gnats and midges, we can set the misting system to also spray during the day to target these pests. We want you to enjoy

your summer outdoors!”

In addition to residential and commercial pest control solutions, BUGCO Pest Control is licensed to do termites. Chris says, “Every time we come out to do a service—whether it’s to treat your home for pests, inspect and fill your mosquito misting system, or another

service–we inspect for termites. It’s June, and the swarmers are out right now! We want to give you peace of mind that your home is always inspected. If the swarmers do decide to make your house their home, we’ll be able to take care of it quickly before the issue gets out of hand.”

When you engage with BUGCO, you are provided a service agreement that outlines the services agreed upon and the pricing. There’s no contract and no hidden or surprise fees. President and CEO John Onofrey says, “If at any point you have questions, you can give us a call or access your account through our online customer portal. Most importantly, you are free to cancel the service agreement at any time without penalty.”

BUGCO Pest Control is a huge supporter of our community. “We especially love our schools and teachers in both FBISD and LCISD,” says Chris. “And a big shout out to my wife Emily who will earn her degree to become a teacher at the end of this year. Corinne (our daughter) and I are so proud of you!”

Tips for Parents

Board-Certified, Kid-Approved

Does your child have a unique personality and unique needs? Of course! No two children are exactly alike…and that’s why it’s important that your child’s dentist understands these differences.

A pediatric dentist is a dentist that has additional, specialized training in child psychology, growth and development, and the special health care needs of children. Taking it a step further, a board-certified pediatric dentist, or diplomat, is a pediatric dentist that demonstrates exceptional knowledge and expertise. Less than 38% of all pediatric dental specialists within the United States have earned diplomat status. Dr. Faisal Khan, founder of local Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, is among this elite group. He’s also a fellow in special care dentistry.

But let’s be real. Kids don’t look at credentials, they’re deciding what they like and don’t like based on personal experience. In this department, Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental is exceptional. Kids love Dr. Khan for his gentle demeanor and his super fun office. Dental examinations are performed on surfboard beds while unsuspecting patients enjoy a favorite show or movie on the ceiling-mounted TV. The floor-to-ceiling murals transport both parents and children to a tranquil place under the sea.

“An incredible amount of progress has been made in pediatric dentistry,” says Dr. Khan. “Not just in terms of silent drills and painless procedures, but the psychological component of making your kids feel relaxed and happy. And that means parents are happy too.”

Social Security and the Roth IRA

When the time comes, you’ll collect your social security dollars tax-free, right?

“Not always,” says Andy Sharp, President and CEO of local Altere Financial, LLC. “Today, if you make a certain amount of outside income, your social security could be taxed up to 85%.” Outside income can include interest from municipal bonds, required minimum distributions from IRAs and 401Ks, and more.

“If you’re reaching an age where you may collect social security,” continues Andy, “I encourage you to challenge your financial advisor, CPA, or estate attorney to consider whether converting your money to a Roth IRA–and paying the taxes in today’s dollars–could be to your benefit down the road. Roth income is not included in the social security calculation.”

But be prepared. You’ll likely hit some roadblocks when you ask this question. Andy explains, “In my experience, most individuals in my profession aren’t incentivized to do advanced or future tax planning. CPAs tend to make suggestions based on today’s tax code and today’s dollars. Most financial planners and advisors are focused on market strategy. And while estate attorneys are looking at protecting your money, they may not be looking at ways to save both you and your beneficiaries from paying taxes on those dollars in the future.”

“Our house had a wonderful, 1980s, sunken, sexy shower,” says Sandra.

“But I’m not sexy anymore. I’ve had back problems that have had me in a power chair and using a rollator. My husband Jim had a stroke a year ago. That step down shower was a bad and dangerous situation. We had to do something.”

Your Kitchen

To convert the sunken shower to a walk-in shower, Sandra interviewed six or seven contractors. She says, “I had done my research, and I was prepared with questions. I was not impressed with any of them. A friend recommended Teri Gilberg (better known as The Re-Modelista) on Nextdoor. She’s a person I knew would not settle, so I gave Teri a call. Teri was more knowledgeable than anyone else I talked to. She was in tune with what I wanted and needed, and she could answer all of my questions. I felt comfortable. I was so impressed with the interview.”

Sandra knew she wanted the shower to be bright and white. “Teri comped me time with interior designer Louise Ostrander. With my back issues, I could not go out to look at products. Louise was able to get in my head and bring three or four tiles to the house for me to look at. They were all perfect. I went online and selected beautiful wave grab bars that do not look institutional. They repeat the wave pattern in the tile. The new showerhead accommodates a tall person and a short person. I’m 4’10” bent over, and Jim is six feet tall. We had a bump out bench that we had Teri make bigger to make a safer shower seat. Teri measured my behind to ensure I won’t slip off of it!”

“There’s a metal door to the outside in the back of our bathroom,” continues Sandra. “I’d always wanted a mud room, and this was

the perfect opportunity. Jim can now come in from working in the yard, directly into what he calls our shower room. I call it our spa room. It’s bigger than many walk-in closets, and it’s walkin/roll-in.”

Teri estimated the shower con version would take two weeks. “It took less than two weeks,” says Sandra. “Teri worked a miracle, laying tile from one wall to the other, painting with water resistant paint, and all of the other odds and ends. Dur ing construction, Teri was always available to me. She texted and phoned daily and was just intuitive. I had never worked with a female contractor before. After working with Teri, I may never work with a male again!”

“Jim and I couldn’t be happier. Our new shower is excellent. I will be using Teri again to remodel my kitchen once I save up for it. She is just remarkable.”

AcceleratingPlastic SurgeryRecovery

Plastic Surgeon Christopher K. Patronella, MD has known Delmie DePuma-Aparicio, owner of local True Recovery Lymphatic Massage, since 2008. Dr. Patronella says, “Delmie worked in my office for five years as a lymphatic massage therapist, accelerating the recovery of my patients after surgery.”

How does lymphatic massage work? It opens up the lymph system that may have become blocked during the plastic surgery. When the lymph system is blocked, the body is not getting the vital lymph fluid it needs to heal itself. Increased swelling and bruising is likely, and the body becomes more susceptible to infection. Lymphatic massage opens up the lymph nodes, allowing the lymph fluid to flow freely throughout the body…healing the body.

“Lymphatic massage is very effective in reducing the swelling after both facelifts and any kind of body contouring,” explains Dr. Patronella. “After a body contouring procedure, lymphatic massage also improves areas of tenderness and lumpiness. I still refer my patients to Delmie and True Recovery Lymphatic Massage for plastic surgery recovery. She has a tremendous skill set and an incredible touch. Delmie’s very passionate about what she does, and she’s fantastic with patients. They really like her!”

Dr. Patronella has been in practice for three decades. “I love what I do,” continues Dr. Patronella. “I’m very grateful to be able to change a person’s physical condition. But it’s not just aesthetics, people change psychologically and emotionally as well. I see it over and over again. Procedures like our mommy makeovers boost confidence, improve intimate relationships, and enhance a woman’s sense of well-being. It’s a powerful event in someone’s life.”

Delmie says, “I’ve learned so much from Dr. Patronella. He’s my mentor and a dear friend. I thank him for continuing to trust me with his patients. Dr.

Patronella has also done several plastic surgery procedures for me…I won’t go to anyone else!” For more information on Dr. Patronella, visit www.patronellamd.com.

The Finest Palate of Pakistan

Founded by Aziz Noorani, Chef Faisel Ahmad, and Aftab Bawani, Lasbela Restaurant reflects the finest standards of Pakistan. The atmosphere, the interior, the food, and even the dinnerware are contemporary while reminiscing all the way back to the fabulous palaces of the Mughal Dynasty. “This is an experience,” explains Aziz. “It’s a celebration of Pakistani culture, tradition, religion, music, art, architecture, and history through our cuisine.”

Chef Faisel says, “The base of our food is 400 years of Mughal history. I’ve fused that base with local flavors using a variety of cooking techniques. There’s something on the menu that everyone can identify with and relate to. We prepare a variety of proteins, including lamb, goat, chicken, beef, and seafood (both fin and shellfish). Aromatic herbs and spices give the food a very rich flavor.” Selections include appetizers, soups, salads, barbecue entrees, grilled entrees, currys, rice items, desserts, and both traditional and trendy drinks. All food is always fresh, never frozen.

Aziz studied at the Culinary Institute of America. He earned a Master’s Degree in Hospitality and Marketing and has more than 25 years experience in the industry. “I searched the United States for the perfect place to open my vision. I selected Sugar Land for its diversity and opportunity.” The wall-of-fame at Lasbela is peppered with local, national and international celebrities. This is a happy, happening place with something going on every month: live jazz, standup comedy, karaoke, and holiday celebrations.

Dining is open for both lunch and dinner. Lasbela offers to-go, delivery, and catering tray options. For special events, Lasbela can host up to 60 people in its private room, and up to 250 people in the banquet room. Catering is also available, including outdoor “live” backyard catering that’s “barbecue to plate.”

“We wanted to bring something different to this community, the community my family and I call home,” says Aziz. “When you stop in, ask for me. I can’t wait to meet you!”

ACHIEVE

YOUR GOALS

arren Stewart, owner and founder of local Fitness by Darren, says, “Because I was homeschooled, I was never active in lifting or sports as a kid. College was a change of pace for me. I got into fitness and weight lifting, and I realized how much I love an active lifestyle. I earned my bachelor’s in kinesiology with the intention of becoming a physical therapist. A friend of mine was into personal training, and he thought I should give it a shot before grad school. That was 12 years ago, and I’ve never looked back.”

At Fitness by Darren, Darren’s focus is bringing his clients the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. “It’s not just about appearance,” explains Darren. “At 36 years old, I’m in the best shape of my life. I want to show others how to feel this way too. My programs are custom tailored to the individual. I do not just do a certain style and modify it for you. My clientele ranges from collegiate athletes to post surgery patients to individuals interested in weight loss to those in their golden years. I customize what I do for each and every client. A healthy lifestyle is really necessary, and I cover every base with the individuals that I train. Regardless of where you’re at, I take pride in your success. I remember the first time a client was cleared by his doctor and taken off blood pressure meds. It’s a great feeling to help people achieve their goals.” Fitness by Darren programs can include personal training, nutrition, meal prep plans, weight loss, and more.

“I’m always learning and shifting,” continues Darren. “A little story about myself: For 10 years, I never did cardio. I stayed in shape through weight lifting. Eight months ago, I picked up running again. It was a pivot in my lifestyle as I headed into my 30s, and it was sometimes a struggle. There were many days the voice in my head was telling me that I did not want to run. I realized this is how many of my clients feel when they get started…and I had to push through. Today, I’m running competitively. I’m training for the next Houston Marathon half, with a goal of running it in 1.5 hours.”

Over the last 12 years, Darren has trained more than 500 clients. His ‘core group’ has been with him for more than 10 years. In 2020, Darren was named one of Houston Chronicle’s Top Fitness Pros, an honor an individual can only be awarded once in their lifetime. “It’s just awesome,” says Darren. “I love what I do, and I have an extreme passion for it.
