osquitoes, ticks, fleas, ants, gnats, and more…they’re all out in full force this time of year. Pests can pose serious dangers to health and human safety. They bite, sting, transmit a wide variety of bacteria, parasites, viruses, and can even cause severe allergic reactions. But it’s a double-sided coin. You want to keep your family safe from the pests, but you also want to keep them safe from the products that control these pests! Local BUGCO Pest Control is committed to providing safe and effective treatments to solve your family’s pest problems. Chris Millward (cofounder of BUGCO Pest Control with John Onofrey) says, “We set the highest standards for pest control services. We use only high-quality pesticides applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions to keep you, your family, your pets, and the environment safe. We handle all types of pests. ALICE. “WITHOUT TREATMENT, I COULD HAVE LOST A FOOT!”

“I COULD HAVE LOST A FOOT!”

S

ixty-five-year-old Alice Taplin was experiencing excruciating pain in her right foot and ankle. “It hurt, and it didn’t look right,” explains Alice. “The PA at my pain management doctor suggested I see Dr. Zagum Bhatti at Modern Vascular in Houston.” An angiogram of Alice’s right ankle revealed that she has Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD is a condition where blood flow to the legs, feet, and toes is decreased due to plaque buildup on arterial walls, causing the peripheral arteries to narrow (atherosclerosis). “It was bad,” says Alice. “Blood was not getting to one side of my foot. Dr. Bhatti explained to me that without treatment, I might need amputation. It’s what I like most about Dr. Bhatti: He educated me on my condition. He treats everyone like a human being. I was never rushed, and I was encouraged to ask questions.”

At Modern Vascular in Houston, Dr. Bhatti and his team utilize minimally-invasive, imageguided procedures to treat PAD. This treatment revascularizes the arteries below the knee and in the foot, relieving pain and usually preventing amputation. Alice says, “On the day of my procedure, Dr. Bhatti and his staff went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable. They helped each other out. You could tell they work well together as a team. It really took away the fear for me.” All revascularizations at Modern Vascular are outpatient procedures and take about two hours. Patients go home the same day. “It was a mind-blowing experience,” continues Alice. “Without treatment, I could have lost a foot! I still have pain off and on, but it’s much better. It’s so good to find medical people that have not lost their touch. Dr. Bhatti is awesome, and his staff is awesome. He really wants to help his patients. I’m a retired nurse, and I have no complaints. I admire doctors like Dr. Bhatti.”

PAD warning signs include numbness, cramps, weakness, foot wounds, discoloration, and cold feet. The largest risk factor for PAD is diabetes. Smokers and those with high blood pressure or high cholesterol are also at risk. The Modern Vascular location here in Richmond is one of 17 clinics nationwide, four in Texas, and the only Houston area clinic. To learn more or schedule an evaluation, visit www.ModernVascular.com. It’s In Their BLOOD

by Marie Page

“I

never told my sons, Luke, Jake and Beau, to go into the family business,” says Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter, owner of local Alan’s Plumbing. “But they grew up watching me do it. It seems like just yesterday they were riding the truck with me and my brother Chris. They all loved to get dirty back then, and nothing has changed! Today, all three of my boys are integral members of the Alan’s Plumbing team.” At Alan’s, family is the language spoken. Like Alan, his brother Chris and son Luke are also Master Plumbers. Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license, and Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. The Alan’s Plumbing team includes journeyman-licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Jaime, and tradesman-licensed Trevor. Alan’s wife Jennifer and Megan Duncan answer the phones and handle everything else besides the actual plumbing. “They

keep us informed, organized, and on the road,” says Alan. “We couldn’t do it without them.” The DNA doesn’t stop there. The smallest Burkhalter, Luke’s son Wyatt, has a strong plumbing bloodline. Alan says, “Wyatt’s other grandfather is a plumber too! I’m super excited. Wyatt is just about old enough now to ride the truck and get dirty with us. Just like the good old days with my three boys.” All of the Alan’s Plumbing team members live in the community they serve. “You are more than a customer to us,” explains Alan. “You’re family. Our boys played ball with your boys. My own grandfather helped build the San Jacinto monument. We’ve done more than just put down roots here. We’re Texans. That’s why we care so much about the work we do for you. We’re

your neighbors as well as your plumbers, and we are accountable to no one but you.” So what can expect from the Alan’s Plumbing team? “Honesty,” says Alan. “Fair and transparent pricing. Leaving your house as clean, if not cleaner, than we found it. Arriving promptly. Doing what we say we’re going to do, within the time we say we’re going to do it. That’s what works–not making pie-in-the-sky promises that no one can deliver on.” The next time you need a plumber, give Alan’s Plumbing a call. They’ve got plumbing in their blood. And who knows… maybe one of these days, little Wyatt will answer! Alan’s Plumbing

oard-certified urologist Dr. John Boon is a fan of local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “They’re fast, friendly, and convenient. I can refer patients based on their needs.” At his practice, Dr. Boon’s primary focus is robotic surgery for prostate cancer. Dr. Boon has a unique perspective on patient care…multiple members of his family have been affected by urologic cancer. His research includes creating training models for minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Dr. Boon treats patients right here in Sugar Land. He also proctors other urologists, teaching them the latest techniques in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. “It’s inevitable,” says Dr. Boon. “When I treat prostate cancer, I’ll also be treating erectile dysfunction. I refer these patients to Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy for injectable therapy.” Erectile dysfunction injection therapy is an effective, fast-acting treatment that relaxes the blood vessels and allows for increased blood flow, creating an erection. “Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy is also the only local pharmacy that carries Ellura,” continues Dr. Boon. “Ellura is a treatment for women with recurrent urinary tract infections. We could have it shipped to our patients, but Campbell’s carries it right next to our office. It’s very convenient.” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy was founded in 2003 by Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. “Many years ago, I worked for a large retail pharmacy,” explains Dr. Campbell. “I found that environment seriously flawed. Rosenberg’s First Planned Office Development

onnie Chang, President of ABC Realty Advisors, loves what he does. “I’m a real estate junkie, and my fix is a deal,” says Donnie. “I don’t consider this work. It’s my passion…the size of the deal doesn’t matter. It’s such a great feeling when I can help a young couple secure a property to realize their entrepreneur dreams.” Professional business owners can do just that at Donnie’s newest project, Reading Road Office Condominiums & Park in Rosenberg. Located at 5222 Reading Way near FM 2218, this is an outstanding opportunity to work away from home, yet stay close to home and OWN your office! “Rosenberg is booming,” explains Donnie. “But it has no office space. This quality office park is built on nine serene acres next to a four acre detention lake with a sidewalk trail. The new construction is very energy-conscious, including fully insulated walls and ceilings, double pane windows, and roofs slanted to allow solar retrofitting. OWN your 1,200 to 3,750 square foot+ office space built out to your specifications with your signage on the front door. It’s perfect for insurance agencies, medical/ dental specialties, law firms, and professionals.”

“Purchase an office condominium, and your monthly investment will be about the same as renting,” continues Donnie. “The added benefit of owning is you’ll enjoy the tax advantages and tax write-off, and you’ll have 24-hour access to your property. It’s a safe and secure place for your business to prosper for years to come.” A leasing option is also available at Reading Road Office Condominiums & Park. Donnie grew up in Manhattan where his parents owned an extremely successful restaurant. “When I was in high school, we started buying rental houses on Fire Island,” says Donnie. “That was my first introduction to real estate. In 1974, my parents came out of retirement to open a Galleria-area restaurant. I came to Houston to help them for six months. I never left.” Donnie has been in commercial real estate in the Greater Houston Area since 1985. Before Beltway 8 existed, he helped build, design, and develop along the Bellaire Corridor. Reading Road Office Condominiums & Park will have a model completed by August 1. To learn more or schedule an appointment to visit the office park, call ABC Realty Advisors at 713-939-8181.

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

New Fish in The Sea

by Amy Sharp

T

en years ago, Dr. Faisal M. Khan opened Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental: A magical place where children are immersed in an under-the-sea experience for dental cleanings, examinations, and procedures. Kids and parents alike laud Dr. Khan for making going to the dentist a fun experience…and the practice has grown by leaps and bounds. Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik and Dr. Aalia Farukhi are the newest fish in the Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental sea. Dr. Ritwik had a wonderful dentist growing up. “In high school, I had the opportunity to shadow him,” says Dr. Ritwik. “He showed me all the neat things dentists can do.” After finishing dental school, Dr. Ritwik worked at the Kuwait Ministry of Health. “I was the primary dentist for elementary school children. One day I came home, and my mother told me she had never seen someone so happy after work...that I must really enjoy working with children. I had never thought about pediatric dentistry until then. That changed things. I moved to the United States to pursue a specialization in pediatric dentistry.” Today, Dr. Ritwik is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). She serves as a consultant for the ABPD and is a member of the examination committee. Dr. Ritwik is a Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at UT Houston School of Dentistry. Dr. Farukhi always knew she wanted to go into healthcare. She says, “I knew I wanted to do something where I worked with my hands. I’ve always loved arts and crafts, but I wasn’t sure which medical field to go into. In college, I attended a Pre-Dental Society meeting. The speaker said something I had not considered before. She described how dentists helped people instantly. I really liked that idea!” While working in general dentistry, Dr. Farukhi discovered she was very passionate about treating children. She returned to school and graduated top of her class from

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston with a Master of Science in Dentistry while completing a two-year pediatric dental residency program. Dr. Farukhi gained valuable expertise treating patients with special health care needs at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital. “Kids are so much fun! We are able to establish good habits early on and work on prevention. Here, Dr. Khan and Dr. Ritwik are great mentors to me. The practice is very diverse, and the staff is easy to work with. I love it!” “This is a very child-centered practice,” adds Dr. Ritwik. “If something is appropriate and right for children, Dr. Khan makes it happen. Our hands are not tied…we have access to the equipment, materials, and other specialized items that we need. This allows us to take care of each child as if they were one of our own. I go to bed happy knowing we are providing the best pediatric dental care possible.”

athan Rees got his start brewing beer with his buddies in his garage. Today, he owns and operates local microbrewery, Texas Leaguer Brewing Company, with his wife Elise. “Who doesn’t love baseball and beer?” asks Nathan. “We invite everyone to try our baseball-themed craft beers at the brewery, better known as TXL Beerpark. This is a very community-driven place, with large, beer garden-style tables. Neighbors and strangers can sit together and really get to know each other. Come out and watch the Astros or listen to live music. We also have wine on tap and make our own seltzer called 7th Inning Stretch. Bring the family! Elise and I have five kids of our own, and they’re here all the time. We brew a root beer called The Little Leaguer… it’s a favorite of kids and adults alike. There’s rotating food trucks onsite, we boil crawfish on Sundays when in season, and

every Thursday is steak night. We have cornhole, Jenga, and a large Connect 4 set. The TXL Beerpark is safe and fun for all!” Texas Leaguer Brewing Company distributes throughout Texas. “We service our Fort Bend accounts ourselves,”

explains Nathan. “And we like to support local. We purchased all of our delivery and sales vehicles from Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land. We also turned to them when we needed a vehicle big enough for all of our kids! Late last year, we were finding it very hard to find a new suburban. Classic Chevy Sugar Land made sure that when a suburban arrived in Texas, it had our name on it. They really came through, getting us

The service is fantastic.” Classic Chevy Sugar Land and Classic Chevy HWY 6 are owned by Jeff and Tiffany Sebastian. Tiffany and Jeff live here in Sugar Land, and their kids go to school here. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. grew up in Beaumont. He received his undergraduate degree from Lamar University and his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. “I love this community,” says Dr. Lomonte. “I raised my kids here, and I’ve been practicing in the very same office on Murphy Road since 1982. I’m now seeing second and third generations of patients. It’s a wonderful feeling—a family feeling—when I watch patients grow up and then bring their own kids in to see me.” Dr. Lomonte enjoys a reputation for offering hightech solutions at reasonable rates. Whether you need simple fillings, whitening, Invisalign, or more serious treatment, Dr. Lomonte and his friendly staff have the knowledge and the experience to put you at ease. “I want to shake your hand, hear your stories, and really get to know you,” says Dr. Lomonte. “Then you can trust me with your teeth. Giving people healthy smiles at a price they can afford makes me happy. I’ve made it my business to help hard-working people get excellent dental care. And don’t fret if you haven’t seen a dentist in quite some time. I often hear how people are afraid to come in.

“I love this community,” says Dr. Lomonte. “I raised my kids here, and I’ve been practicing in the very same office on Murphy Road since 1982.” They’ve not been to the dentist in a few years, and they think their teeth will be the worst I’ve ever seen. In nearly all instances, that’s just not the case. With a little maintenance and repair, most people’s teeth are actually just fine! If your teeth do require work, we’ll set up a plan and budget that you’re comfortable with. Your smile and your friendship are my top priorities.” “Happy Father’s Day to all the dads,” adds Dr. Lomonte. “Enjoy your day doing what you love. I’ll be fishing!”

The Award of Distinction for Excellent Performance by Amy Sharp

L

ocal St. Michael’s Elite Hospital has earned The Award of Distinction for Excellent Performance. This award recognizes inpatient facilities and emergency departments that score at or above the 100th percentile compared to Professional Research Consultants’ national client database for the prior calendar year. For inpatient facilities, this recognition is determined by evaluating the top box scores of two questions: Overall Quality of Care (% Excellent) and Overall Hospital Rating (% 9-10). If the corresponding percentile ranking for either of these questions is at or above the 100th percentile, the facility will receive an Award of Distinction. For emergency departments, this designation is based on the percentage of patients who rate the care setting as “Excellent” for the Overall Quality of Care question. If the corresponding percentile ranking is at or above the 100th percentile, the department will receive an Award of Distinction. St. Michael’s Elite Hospital was founded more than 15 years ago by Dr. Shannon Orsak and his brother Brian. The original concept was a 24-hour emergency room with on-site radiology and lab departments that guaranteed wait times of 15 minutes or less in a comfortable and cozy environment. In 2019, St. Michael’s expanded, adding a small, licensed hospital to its already outstanding emergency room services. The Award of Distinction for Excellent Performance recognizes both the hospital care and the emergency care

hen Jeff Sebastian’s home A/C stopped working, he called the A/C company he’d been using for a while. “It was the same A/C company that had serviced the home for the previous owner,” explains Jeff. “We just stuck with them when we bought the house. They came, did an inspection, and explained to me that we would need three new units. The units were not old, so I asked if they were sure. They said, ‘Yes.’ I really felt like I was getting worked over.” Not comfortable with the situation, Jeff called local All Cool A/C & Heating. “All Cool was the first company I thought of for a second opinion,” explains Jeff. “The owner, Bryan Bellamy, is very involved in the community. They’ve bought vehicles from us. (Jeff and his wife Tiffany own Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land and Classic Chevrolet HWY 6). The All Cool crew came out and did their own inspection. They told us the information we were given was not the case…we did not need new units. Keeping The Mind and Body SHARP by Amy Sharp

G

reater Houston Area attorney Larry Hatley was a college basketball player. At 70 years old, he’s in shape and looking to keep his mind and body sharp until 100 years old and beyond. Larry says, “Our cells degrade as we age, including our stem cells. We need to replenish and strengthen them. Ozone is a well-known therapy in other countries. It strengthens the body’s immune response. We started using ozone therapy when my wife Debra was diagnosed with cancer. While she did traditional treatment for cancer, we both started ozone therapy preventatively. If the body is ozonated, cancer (and a host of other viruses and bacteria) can’t live there.” The Hatleys received IV ozone therapy from two different Houston area clinics before discovering Dr. Julia Ward at local Balanced Body Functional Medicine. “With Dr. Ward, we are able to receive both ozone dialysis and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Ozone dialysis was new to us. It’s two IVs into the body. One draws the blood, and it is cleaned and oxygenated. Then the blood is put back in the body with the other line.” HBOT involves simply breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. “Dr. Ward is very good,” continues Larry. “The best we’ve seen. She’s a medical doctor. The others we received ozone therapy from were not. Dr. Ward always checks how we’re feeling, and she draws blood periodically to test it and check if we are where we need to be. Dr. Ward is not blindly giving shots or recommending therapy. She is scientifically

checking what will most benefit you.” Dr. Ward says, “HBOT was originally invented to treat decompression sickness in deep sea divers (the bends). Today, there are 14 conditions for which insurance will cover HBOT, and more than 150 off label conditions. Remember, everything except the bends was off label at one point. Ozone and oxygen therapy are the most trusted ways to increase oxygen levels to the brain, resulting in a variety of positive physiological, biochemical, and cellular effects…and it’s extremely safe. More oxygen creates more energy for accelerated repair and enhanced regeneration of tissue. It stimulates the immune system, reduces inflammation, and helps our cells use oxygen with the most efficiency. Some athletes use it routinely to improve performance. It’s so effective, we’ve seen competitions not allow athletes to receive HBOT therapy right before events.” Larry continues to work as a criminal defense, personal injury, and workman’s comp attorney. Together with Debra, his life’s work is with the Congregation of Yahweh. “We plan to travel with the ministry for many, many years. With Dr. Ward’s help, we know that will be possible!”

BACK PAIN RELIEF WITHOUT SURGERY

n 1997, Narendra Singh hurt his back picking up a laser printer. “For years, I had a lot of pain in the right side of my back,” says Narendra. “I couldn’t work in my yard. There were many everyday things I couldn’t do. I saw several doctors, and I did a lot of physical therapy. It didn’t work. I was told I would need surgery. I did not want that. I had seen many articles about Sugar Land Health Center in UpClose Magazine. I decided to give them a try.” Dr. Steve Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. Together, they offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. “I’ll admit, I was skeptical about seeing a chiropractor,” says Narendra. “But at my consultation, Dr. Harris convinced me otherwise. He showed me my x-ray. Dr. Harris pointed out exactly where my problems were. No one had done that before! He walked me through what we would have to do to relieve my pain. I told Dr. Harris, ‘Let’s do what we have to do to get this done.’” Narendra’s treatment plan included decompression and laser therapy. “Throughout my treatment, I continuously learned I should not miss the schedule,” explains Narendra. “As long as I did what Dr. Harris told me to do, I got better. I’m very happy now. I have no pain, and I can do everything with no problem.” “Dr. Harris was my primary doctor, and I Dr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell

also saw Dr. Brazzell when Dr. Harris wasn’t available,” says Narendra. “Both doctors care very much about their patients. They listen to what you have to say, and take the time to explain everything. Their office team is very good as well. They really take care of you. Do I recommend Sugar Land Health Center? Oh yes, no doubt about that!” New Patient Special
