ack in the day, individuals with diabetes administered insulin using glass syringes that had to be sterilized. They also sharpened their own needles to be reused,” says Dr. James Ferguson, Medical Director at St. Michael’s Elite Hospital. “Today with insulin pumps and pens, the administering of insulin is almost instantaneous. We can manage diabetes to the point where the patient lives a pretty normal life!” “There are two types of diabetes,” continues Dr. Ferguson. “They are radically different. The first is Type 1, the one we once called juvenile diabetes. In Type 1, the patient’s antibodies are attacking and destroying the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to live. The peak age of onset for Type 1 is 14 years old. The peak age of onset for Type 2 diabetes is around 45. In Type 2, the patient’s body is insulin resistant, and the common cause is obesity. A patient’s diet can often cure Type 2 diabetes.” “The hallmark signs of new onset diabetes are excessive thirst, excessive urination, and unintended

If left untreated, a person with diabetes can go into a diabetic ketotic state—where without enough insulin, the body will begin to break down fat as fuel. This process produces a buildup of acids in the bloodstream called ketones, eventually leading to diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is life-threatening. If you see the signs—excessive thirst, excessive urination, or unintended weight loss, particularly in teenagers—this is a clear emergency.” At St. Michael’s Elite Hospital, Dr. Ferguson and his highly trained staff are prepared to handle any emergency...without the wait. Patient Care

n 2013, Alison Burrows had a double mastectomy. She was referred to Dr. Pierre Chevray for delayed breast reconstruction in 2015. A referral that turned out to be life-changing for both Alison and Alison’s children. Dr. Chevray, his nurse Carol Ross, and physician assistant Patrick Young are part of an incredible team at The Institute for Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Chevray says, “Patients requiring breast reconstruction have two options: man-made implants or DIEP flap reconstruction, where the individual’s own tissue is taken from the belly and used to rebuild the breasts. Because Alison did not do reconstruction at the same time as her mastectomy, and she had radiation, her best option was DIEP flap surgery. That we do DIEP flap procedures in Sugar Land (at Houston Methodist) is notable. It’s a ninehour procedure (for both sides) where we microsurgically reattach an artery and a vein to transplant the flap.” Dr. Chevray and his team strive to bring exceptional Medical Center-quality care to the community, making it easier for patients to receive the care they deserve. Carol spends time getting to know every patient of Dr. Chevray, going as far as to provide them with her cell phone number, and they can call anytime

with questions. Realizing that other patients’ perspectives are important, Carol also networks each patient with similar patients to help them understand and cope with the next steps of their journey.

“That we do DIEP flap procedures in Sugar Land (at Houston Methodist) is notable. It’s a nine-hour procedure (for both sides) where we microsurgically reattach an artery and a vein to transplant the flap.” Alison says, “Dr. Chevray and Carol make it sound easy, but it’s incredible what they do. They take the time to explain things, and really listen to the patient. After my mastectomy, I would have nightmares imaging how a tummy tuck can then become a breast. I just couldn’t imagine my new normal. It was very helpful to talk with other patients, and one lady actually showed me her breasts. I knew then that I would be normal. That I could have them back, and they would look right. The day after my reconstruction, Dr. Chevray woke me at 5am to check on me. You can really tell how

much he and Carol care about their patients. And my breasts look normal and fantastic, no flop or drop!” When Carol learned that both of Alison’s children were intrigued by their mom’s surgery, she arranged for Alison’s son to shadow Dr. Chevray and her daughter shadow herself (Carol) during the summer. Both are now pursuing careers in medicine. Alison’s son Jack has since transitioned from a business program to medical school, and her daughter Emily is a clinical specialist in cardiac mapping. Alison says, “Both Dr. Chevray and Carol played a huge role in inspiring Jack and Emily’s chosen career paths. I hope more doctors and nurses will allow this type of mentoring, inspiring more people by example to enter the profession. A huge thank you to both!” Institute for Reconstructive Surgery has 15 surgeons with six office locations serving the Greater Houston area. Specialties include breast reconstruction, head and neck reconstruction, pelvic and genitourinary reconstruction, extremity reconstruction, facial paralysis surgery, and nerve and sports injury restoration. She Was Told by Amy Sharp

There Was I

No Cure

n June of 2019, Audeli Sandello was diagnosed with varicose ulcers in Tyler, TX. She says, “I was living there with my son, and then we moved to California. After a few more doctor visits, I was told there was no cure for me. Not only that, the treatments they suggested were out of my reach financially.” The situation caused Audeli great despair. Months passed, and in March of 2020 the pandemic hit California hard. Audeli decided to return to Texas and stay with her daughter in Sugar Land. “I knew my daughter could help find the right doctor for me,” explains Audeli. “I’m a very dynamic person, and the disease took me away from my job and afternoon walks. After we got used to the new normal of 2020, we started to look for a specialist in varicose ulcers. We had heard Houston Methodist is the best hospital in the Houston area, and we thought we could find the best doctor there. That same week, we got a pamphlet in the mail...and there was Dr. Baltazar’s picture. He looked so familiar, and just a welcome face. The next day, my daughter called his office and set up my first appointment. At that first consultation, I felt great confidence in Dr. Baltazar. His dedication and love for the profession made me regain my hope for a real cure. He immediately ordered an ultrasound, he diagnosed the disease, and he put together a detailed treatment plan that I could understand and follow.” Dr. Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. “Don’t get me wrong,” says Audeli, “I was scared due to my past experiences with other doctors. But that day, I felt I would

be cared for by Dr Baltazar and his team. On September 17th, to my delight and to everyone who was following my treatment—including his medical team—I was cured. Now, I am gradually returning to a happy life. I take walks in the afternoon with my children and grandchildren. I have a great desire to be happy again thanks to Dr. Baltazar. He gave me full attention. After a year of physical and mental suffering, Dr. Baltazar gave me back my self-esteem and physical health in just three months. He is an enlightened person, always cheerful and welcoming me with a smile of encouragement. I thank Dr. Baltazar and his entire team for all of their support, affection and dedication. If it weren’t for them, I don’t know where I would be today.”

Stuff Yourself This Thanksgiving.

NOT Your Pipes!

ou may not realize it, but the days leading up to Thanksgiving are some of the busiest days of the year for plumbers. Luke Burkhalter, Master Plumber at local Alan’s Plumbing, says, “In anticipation of the holiday, people are cleaning out their fridge and jamming everything down the disposal. Trust me, no one wants a kitchen clog...especially when you have company over! But there are some preventive measures you can take to avoid clogging that disposal.” “After major use,” continues Luke, “you should flush your garbage disposal. To do this, simply fill the sink with warm to hot water, pull the plug, and turn on the disposal...flushing everything out of it. Another good way to clean the disposal is to pour ice cubes down it and turn it on. The ice shards will effectively scour all the hard to reach areas of the unit, and then melt down the drain. Super easy.” With company in town, it’s not just your kitchen pipes that are working overtime...it’s all of them. “We see lots of main line clogs this time of year too,” says Luke. “A gurgling toilet, or gurgling anywhere, is a sign of a stoppage in the main line. You need to call a plumber when this happens. If you have sewer backing up into a tub or shower, or if there’s flooding around the toilet base, you can relieve the pressure by locating the square-topped, white, PVC clean out cap outside of your home. Opening the cap will relieve the pressure, moving the water outside until your plumber arrives and can snake the line. It’s a lot better to have the water outside than inside! If you don’t know where your clean out cap is located, give us a call and we’ll help you find it.” Alan’s Plumbing was founded nearly three decades ago by Luke’s dad, Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. Luke’s uncle, Chris Burkhalter, is also a Master Plumber. Luke’s brother Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license. His brother Jake (recently

engaged to Becca Long) is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. The boys’ mom Jennifer, Luke’s wife Chelsea, and Katie Johnson answer the phones. The team’s extended family includes journeyman-licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Jaime, tradesman-licensed Trevor, and apprentice Christian. Luke says, “Preventive maintenance is the key to avoiding a kitchen clog. Remember, give your disposal a good flush after major use, and never pour in oils or drippings from your holiday cooking. Poultry skins, eggshells, carrots, celery, pumpkin pulp, potato skins, banana peels and pasta can also cause backups. Use a garbage bag instead. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Alan’s Plumbing!”

COMPLICATED What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You

efore Blanche’s husband Joe passed away, he took care of a lot of things, including the family’s insurance. When it came to selecting Medicare secondary insurance, Joe worked with locally owned Clutch City Insurance. But after Joe’s passing, Blanche went ahead and selected her Medicare insurance plan and options on her own. Blanche’s Medicare self-selection was going just fine...until she discovered she had Parkinson’s disease. The condition required a surgical procedure that would cost Blanche over $100,000. Additionally, the Parkinson’s doctors she wanted to see were not in network, and her diagnosis required some really expensive prescription medications that did not have great coverage on her plan. Not sure where to turn, Blanche called

her late husband’s Medicare insurance agent: Andrew Cheng at Clutch City Insurance. “Anyone 65 and older can go to Medicare.gov and select insurance,” says Andrew, Principal at Clutch City Insurance. “Medicare even sends you a booklet, and the insurance companies bombard you with mail about why their secondary plan is the best. It’s so confusing, and the truth is: One option is not ‘better’ than the next. Everyone’s situation is different, and the key is to match a plan with an individual’s finances and their desired network of doctors. Here at Clutch City Insurance, we represent multiple Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans and options. With our help, Blanche selected a plan that covered her choice of doctors, and the surgical procedure that she needed cost her less than $200 out of pocket. We were also able to get

a better copay on Blanche’s prescription drugs.” Medicare consultations with Clutch City Insurance are always free of charge, whether or not you sign up for secondary insurance. As Blanche learned, what you don’t know really can hurt you. Andrew says, “Unfortunately, it happens far too often. An individual gets sick or something catastrophic happens, and they end up paying outlandish amounts even though they’re on Medicare. It doesn’t have to be this way. Working with an agent costs nothing extra. We’ll help you choose the Medicare plan that’s right for you.” Clutch City Insurance Andrew Cheng 832-767-2455 info@ccihou.com

id last summer’s high temperatures take a serious toll on your household budget? If your home still has its original air conditioner, you can expect higher bills, according to Bryan Bellamy, owner of local All Cool A/C & Heating. Bryan says, “A new, energy-efficient air conditioner can use less than half the energy of a model that’s 12 years old or older. I hate to see people paying more in energy costs and getting less comfort in their homes. That’s why I have put together some winter deals that will get you a new system that literally pays for itself!” What makes a new, energy-efficient system so cool? Bryan says, “The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rates the efficiency of an air conditioning unit. Twelve to 15-year-old units might start as a 10 SEER...but over time this unit will wear down and operate somewhere around the 6-8 SEER level. Transitioning to a new unit with 14-20 SEER means you’ll have an air conditioner that cools and dehumidifies

more efficiently...and the savings on your lower monthly electric bill could balance out the finances.” So is there a way to stick with your current budget and still enjoy the benefits of a brandnew air conditioning unit? “We have special, 0% interest, no money down financing that spreads your payments out over 60 months on qualifying equipment,” explains Bryan. “You could be paying that money to the utility company, or making those payments on a new system with a great warranty that will save you money month after month.” When you install a new system with All Cool A/C & Heating, you can rest easy knowing the job will be done right. Bryan’s son Cody is the VP of the company and serves as Bryan’s righthand man. Cody, Bryan and the entire All Cool team take great pride in not taking shortcuts and providing the best experience possible. Bryan says, “When you choose to install with All Cool A/C & Heating, our team members take the time evaluating your home as well as your needs to make sure you are getting the system that makes the most sense for you and To advertise, 281-235-0600

your family. This way, you gain peace of mind knowing your new system is appropriate for your home and is installed correctly.” Stop paying extra money in energy costs! Winter’s the right time to score low, offseason discounts on a new, energy-efficient system that will literally pay for itself over time. “We recently put in a new system for a local single mom, who’d been paying well over $800 to cool a 2000 square foot home,” says Bryan. “She saw immediate relief on her electric bill, and the temperatures in her home too!”

by Amy Sharp

n early October, Casandra Ramos (co-owner of local Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services with her mother Imelda) welcomed the best gift: baby girls Cecilia and Lucia! Casandra says, “Going from two beautiful girls to four is definitely an adjustment. We were ready to handle one baby when we found out we were pregnant. But when we got the news that we were expecting twins, we celebrated first...and then had to stop and reassess how we would manage our household when the girls arrived. How does one keep a clean house with two newborns, plus two proud big sisters: six-year-old Sofia and one-year-old Elise? There’s only so much our Roomba can do, and to top it off, it got lost somewhere in the house the other day and we have yet to find it!” After brief stays in Houston Methodist at Sugar Land’s Level 3 NICU, Casandra’s precious gifts were ready to come home. “I called my sister and arranged for one of our teams to come in and do a deep cleaning of my house, “ explains Casandra. “They cleaned from top to bottom, and disinfected the surfaces as well. I went to bed that night excited and assured that my home was ready and safe for my newborn daughters.”

if you decide to continue. Call or email today to inquire!

When you think about it, the gift of a professional cleaning is priceless for any parent welcoming home a baby, or anyone who is having an important event in their lives: a bridal shower, baby shower, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or even as a hostess or housewarming gift. “If this year has taught us anything,” says Casandra, “it’s that our home is and should be our safe haven. You should be able to walk into your home after work or school and know you are walking into a clean and disinfected home. A professional cleaning is perfect for your family, and a great gift too!”

ifty-eight-year-old Michael Murry started seeing Dr. Tom Arnold when he was in his late 20s. Michael says, “I’ve worn glasses and/or contacts since my teens. I was frustrated with all of the contacts. They never seemed clear enough, and I felt I didn’t have proper vision. One day by chance I ran into Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land, and happened to see Dr. Arnold. At that very first meeting, we had a really good connection.” Michael has a condition called keratoconus. Dr. Arnold explains, “Patients with keratoconus have a football-shaped cornea that develops irregular astigmatism:

Each direction of the football-shaped cornea has a non-smooth surface much like the peaks and valleys of a mountain range. As one might imagine, keratoconus makes it challenging to fit contact lenses.” “Dr. Arnold and I have worked through a lot of lenses in 30+ years,” says Michael. “Soft, toric, form-fitting toric, weighted toric, and then the tiny RGP lenses. With RGP, I finally had 20/20 vision, but they were so uncomfortable. The thing about Dr. Arnold is...he keeps finding revolutionary ways to help his patients and improve their vision. Six or seven years ago, he asked if I would be a test patient for scleral lenses. He was working with two of his colleagues at the University of Houston who were developing them, and he needed a patient to try them. I can’t thank him enough. Scleral lenses have been the answer for me. I can see 20/20 or better. I’m so pleased with them!” Dr. Arnold says, “Scleral lenses are large-diameter gas permeable contact lenses specially designed to vault over the entire corneal surface, and rest on the ‘white’ of the eye (the sclera). In doing so, the irregular cornea is functionally replaced with a perfectly smooth optical www.upclosemagazine.com

surface to correct vision. Patients like Michael with keratoconus, and others with Fuch’s dystrophy, dry eye disease, graft vs. host disease, post-RK or post-LASIK, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome are all considered possible candidates for sclerals.” “I’ve sent quite a few people over to Dr. Arnold,” says Michael. “My kids see him, my grandkids see him, and my wife sees one of the other doctors at the practice. We live in Katy, and it’s worth the drive to Sugar Land. With him, it’s not a typical patient-doctor relationship. It’s more personable. I know about his family, kids and grandkids. He’s always there for me, and he takes great care of me and my eyes. He’s the reason I can see the way I see.” In addition to Dr. Arnold, the team of doctors at Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land includes Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny and Dr. Joseph A. Janes. Renovating? Jackson Air has Cultivated

Some GREAT Fall Offers!

P

andemic home remodeling is booming. Houzz reported a 58% annual increase in project leads for home professionals in June...a trend that’s still going strong in November. People are home, and realizing the changes they’d like to see around the house. And since they’re working remotely, it’s easier than ever to oversee large, home renovation projects.

We’re seeing beautiful new pools, updated kitchens, and fabulous new bathrooms. There’s also a ton of new air conditioning systems being installed. Brian Jackson, owner of local Jackson Air and Heat, says, “A new A/C may not be all that glamorous, but heating and cooling can account for nearly half of the energy used in your home. It’s why now more than ever consumers are investing in energy-efficient systems.” “The Trane TruComfort XV20i variable speed air conditioner is Trane’s topperforming A/C,” continues Brian. “It’s what I have in my own home. Trane was

the first in the industry to apply variable speed technology to residential air conditioning. What this means is no more sudden starts and stops at full speed. The variable speed compressor knows exactly when to vary the operating speed as the outdoor temperature changes. It makes adjustments in as little as 1/10 of 1% increments to maintain within 1/2° of the thermostat setting. This kind of precision guarantees that it’s never too hot or too cold in your home. Your system glides along on cruise control, barely sipping electricity. Not only that, it’s one of the quietest systems on the market, and it can be controlled from any web-enabled smartphone, tablet or computer. Heading home earlier than expected? You can lower the temperature before you get there! All Trane TruComfort air conditioners come with a 10-year registered limited warranty on the outdoor coil and all other internal functional parts, plus a 12-year registered limited warranty on the compressor. With off-season pricing, plus 0% financing or

instant rebates, right now is a great time to buy!” Jackson Air and Heat also reminds everyone to get their system checked in front of the cooler weather. Brian says, “We recommend getting your furnace checked BEFORE it’s time to turn it on. Carbon monoxide is odorless, and it’s fatal. When we come out to your house, we do a full inspection and tune-up— including checking for carbon monoxide leaks—so you won’t have to worry. We want you and your family to stay safe this holiday season.” Jackson Air and Heat, Inc. Sugar Land’s Oldest Independent Trane Dealer License #TACLB29585 281-240-1037

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DRS. STEVE HARRIS AND ZACK BRAZZELL, DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

WHAT NUMEROUS DOCTORS SAID WAS NOT POSSIBLE

by Amy Sharp

ack in 1994, Michael Lyons’ left ankle and leg were crushed in a construction accident. He was told that his foot was a useless mass of flesh that could not be repaired. His doctor recommended amputation. Not wanting to amputate, Michael underwent seven surgeries to save his foot to the extent that it could be saved. For 26 years, Michael had no dorsiflexion in his left foot—he could not bend his ankle up and back, or lift up his toes. As a result, he walked with a limp. An avid backpacker and Boy Scout troop leader since 1982, Michael has hiked thousands of miles on his compromised foot. He says, “I endured a great deal of pain, plus an extensive loss of energy compensating for that foot while hiking. Numerous doctors told me it was beyond medical science to get the foot operating correctly again...the nerves were shattered, cartilage was missing, and the bones had fused together. Then earlier this year, I learned ankle replacement surgery might be an option.” Just as he was seriously considering ankle replacement surgery, Michael was in an auto accident. He hyperextended both thumbs. “Since my doctor was closed except for COVID-19 patients, my pastor at Faith Lutheran Church, Ken Sinclair, recommended I visit his chiropractors at Sugar Land Health Center to treat my thumbs.” Sugar Land Health Center was opened by Dr. Steve Harris in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. Together, they offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Michael says, “This is a different sort of doctor. Dr. Harris looked at my thumbs and said, ‘We’ll treat that and everything else.’ He wanted to know everything that was wrong. I turn 63 this month, so I went down the list. I had some neck and shoulder problems, but I mostly ignored them because nothing compared to the severe pain I was living with in my foot and ankle for more than 20 years.” Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell put together a treatment plan for Michael’s foot and ankle, his thumbs, and other ailments. Eight weeks after beginning treatment, his dorsiflexion was the same in the left foot as it is in the right. Today, Micheal does not walk with a limp. He can do a real squat. “My calf muscles still need stretching,” says Michael. “But I hope to increase my physical activity, and be back out hiking as soon as everything with COVID is over!” And that ankle replacement surgery? It’s no longer on the table. “I’m a forensic scientist,” says Michael. “I retired from Dr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell

HPD’s forensic laboratory. I take nothing for granted that I cannot prove. What Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell do is really quite incredible!”
