I Survived Stage 3 Breast Cancer at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital

How We Beat Stage 3 Breast Cancer Sharalyn Croft thought she was simply being proactive when she scheduled her first mammogram shortly before turning 40.

But it was a decision that would ultimately save her life, thanks to the first-class team of experts at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, who work together with a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to develop and deliver individualized care plans for breast cancer patients.

Just a couple of months after having an annual check-up with her primary care physician, Dr. Rueywen Chen, of Houston Methodist Primary Care Group, Croft went in for her very first mammogram.

The initial screening was abnormal, leading to a diagnostic mammogram. A tumor – eventually identified as a fastgrowing, aggressive form of breast cancer known as HER2-positive – was found.

“I’d been extremely healthy all my life. I always ate well and took care of myself,” said Croft. “I wasn’t expecting that news.

Nothing can prepare you for it.”

What happened next was a whirlwind of emotions and appointments – months of

chemotherapy, then surgery, and eventually radiation. With her husband Collin and two young daughters by her side, along with friends from Sugar Land Baptist Church, she knew she was not alone.

Compassionate care It took no time at all for Croft – a relative newcomer to Fort Bend – to realize that she was in good hands at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

When the lump in Croft’s breast was identified by mammogram, Chen personally sought out board-certified surgeon Dr. Sandra Templeton for consultation.

“Breast cancer is a terrifying diagnosis for women, especially for moms with young children, and I wanted to make sure that we were moving quickly to begin treatment,” said Chen.

Croft also appreciated the personal – and thorough – communication she received from her care team. “They took the time to really explain things to me and answer my questions, and I never felt rushed when I was with them,” she said.

“I really thought of them as my coaches – they were helping me get through this experience.”

“When I first saw Dr. Shkedy, he already knew about my case and I realized then the importance of such close collaboration between all of my physicians,” said Croft.

“The doctors were working together to make my treatment as effective as possible.”

Quality care, close to home Croft underwent radiation five times a week for six weeks. Throughout her chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatments, the convenience of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital played an important role.

“The hospital is so close to home, and it was convenient not just for me, but for my friends to help me,” said Croft. “Taking my daughters to and from school would have been a lot more complicated if I had to go to the medical center every day for treatment.

Today, after her long journey, Croft is cancer-free and grateful for the care she received.

“My doctors were amazing,” she said. “I didn’t know much about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital when this journey began, but I feel blessed to have had such a great team on my side. When I told my new OB/Gyn, Dr. Bryan Blonder, about my experience, he said ‘Wow, you have one of the best teams in all of Houston.’ And I agree!”

y the time Maria Fiscal met Dr. Baltazar, she had been suffering from varicose veins for three years, and she had experienced a major setback with a different doctor. hen Brittany Reid decided to move forward with a breast augmentation, she consulted with five doctors. “To be honest,” says Brittany, “in some of the offices the staff was just not very nice to me. I almost felt like I was being looked down on for wanting the procedure. Within a couple of days, the pain and pressure was gone.”

Tikki Moore’s Story

hen Tikki Moore was ready to sell her home and upgrade to a bigger one, she needed to find a real estate agent. “Our first home was owner financed, so we had never used an agent before. Shaping the leaders of tomorrow by energizing students to serve their community today is the core of the YIP (Youth in Philanthropy) experience. Developed and funded by the George Foundation and in partnership with Fort Bend Forward, the YIP program allows high school students to experience an eight month, hands-on journey in volunteerism. Dee Koch, Director of Community Engagement for the George Foundation, says, “We hope to give the YIP team members an introduction to the nonprofit sector serving Fort Bend County, and provide an experience that engages them in thinking about how they can give a hand up in their community. Many of our team members return to the nonprofits for which they volunteered to take advantage of continuing the volunteer experience.”

This year the YIP program had nearly 900 applicants. 190 of those youth have been selected to participate in the program.

Twenty-three different area high schools are represented. They are from different demographics, different backgrounds, and foster different interests. They will be divided into seven teams, and they will learn how to work together to complete a volunteer program.

I’m going to start making some changes in my life. I will have more appreciation for my parents, the freedom I have and the things provided to me.”~YIP Volunteer YIP culminates in an annual luncheon in April, where student scholarships are awarded based on volunteerism. Dee says, “Our first year we gave away $46,000, then $90,000 the following year, then over $100,000, and last year over $152,000. We hope to beat

that this year! We will be looking for sponsors to name a scholarship or attend our luncheon. Our youth have made such a large investment in our community, so our community comes together to make an investment in our youth.”

“Philanthropy and volunteerism go hand-in-hand,” adds Dee. “In March our students evaluate their volunteer experience based on metrics including how clear the nonprofit’s mission was and whether the tasks completed contributed to that mission. We use those evaluations to award grant money to the nonprofits...and the feedback helps them better prepare for the next generation of volunteers!”

An Innovative Idea

for a Tight Master Bath

bout a year ago, Mark Godfrey had a contractor out to give ideas and an estimate on remodeling his master bath and enlarging the shower. “To be honest, we really didn’t like what he came up with, so we let it go. Then a few months ago we read about a project Teri Gilberg (better known as ‘The Re-Modelista’) had done in a local magazine and our interest was reinvigorated. We liked what we saw, and when we checked her out on Angie’s List we found a lot of people that were happy with her service and her work. We invited her over, got an estimate and liked what we heard.”

The door on Mark’s cultured marble walk-in shower was extremely narrow, and the shower was wedged in by a wall that backed up to an out-of-date jacuzzi tub. The wall behind the tub had a large window. “We wanted a bigger shower,” says Mark, “but the logistics were problematic since we couldn’t put the shower in front of the window. Teri came up with the idea to remove the wall between the tub and the shower completely, turning it into an open concept shower with a standalone tub. It was the perfect solution to dealing with the window while still enlarging the shower in the space we had.”

“Our entire house has polished brass fixtures,” continues Mark, “so we didn’t want to go with a different look in the bathroom. Teri helped us located plumbing fixtures online that would go with our decor and was very honest in her opinions of what would

work and what wouldn’t. In fact, the entire process of picking finishes and fixtures was a joint effort, which I appreciated. With the extra granite from the slab purchased for the master countertop, we were able to replace countertops in our two powder rooms as well. Teri is very resourceful and conscious of budgets, another trait that is appreciated!”

Mark’s master bath remodel was completed with new tile flooring. “Throughout the process—which only took about three weeks—Teri was in constant communication by text and phone. The quality of work is excellent and we are very happy with the result. It’s exactly what we were wanting! I would definitely recommend Teri and her crews to others wanting to remodel. In fact, I have more to do in my home and I will be calling her again!”

few years ago, I would have thought that anyone with a substance abuse problem just needed to use a little willpower to overcome their addiction,” says Jonee Barnett, co-owner of local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing with her husband Paul. “That was before a loved one of mine was affected. My experience with the destructive nature of this disease and how it affects everyone involved fed my desire to help.

I was invited to attend Fort Bend Regional Council’s Helen Cordes Award Dinner, where I was extremely moved by the success stories I heard and the mission of the organization. And I’m thrilled to co-chair the 2017 dinner with Lisa Regan.”

Since 1976, Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse has been serving this community, meeting the needs of individuals and families seeking help with drug and alcohol addiction. Soon after the Council’s inception, it became apparent that substance abuse was a growing problem that needed to be addressed and that prevention was the key to reversing course. A team of FBRC counselors began working on area school campuses, meeting one-to-one and in small groups with children in high-risk situations. Since that time, the prevention team has grown to 16 Youth

Prevention Counselors working with thousands of students across three school districts every single day. In 2001, FBRC officially opened its treatment facility doors, serving more than one hundred individuals on any given night.

FBRC’s treatment programs give clients a place to heal, find hope and experience the joy of overcoming addiction.

Helen Cordes, the namesake of FBRC’s annual award dinner and fundraiser, played a huge role in FBRC’s growth through the 1990’s. Helen’s husband, Fort Bend County Attorney Roy Cordes Jr., says, “Most everyone’s life has been touched by substance abuse in some way. The more Helen got involved with FBRC, the more passionate she became about working together to make a difference.”

Helen served on the Fort Bend Regional Council’s Board of Directors for six years, three as President. She continued to serve FBRC long afterward, until she retired for health reasons. Her sincere passion for the FBRC mission

inspired all who had the privilege of working with her.

The Eighth Annual Helen Cordes Award Dinner will be February 23, 2017, at the Sugar Creek Country Club. The 2017 Honorees are community advocates Ann and Jeff Council.

A silver medalist from the London 2012 Olympic Games, a 7-time U.S. National Champion, a former world record holder and a 2-time Pan American gold medal winner, Dotsie Bausch is in her fifteenth year of racing. She has spent ten years as a member of the U.S. National Team and has competed in the biggest races around the world for her professional teams.

While Bausch has scored major victories on the bike, perhaps her greatest victory came from resurrecting her own life from the depths of cocaine addiction and eating disorders, which threatened to take her life over a decade ago after a promising modeling career in New York City. It was during her recovery from substance use disorder that she discovered her passion for cycling. Bausch’s inspiring personal story has been chronicled in the media, and she supports women and men around the world in their battle to return to healthy eating and living habits. FBRC is honored to have Dotsie tell her story at the 2017 Helen Cordes Award Dinner.

A Backyard Oasis Makeover with an All-Natural Look

hen Steve Goodman’s small patio upgrade turned into a major renovation including his twelve year old pool, he looked for a company that could take on the entire project. “I read about Bratton Pools in a magazine, and one day I saw their truck driving through my neighborhood. I took that as a sign and gave them a call.”

“I liked Mike Bratton (co-owner of Bratton Pools) immediately,” continues Steve. “He has a great demeanor and he really took the time to explain the process and answer all of my questions. I also liked that Mike, the owner of the company, would stay involved throughout the entire project. A handshake and a nod go a long way, and I just felt good about Mike and Bratton Pools.”

Steve’s hunch worked out well. “My wife and I like a natural look, but we had no idea on the materials we wanted. We had a picture in mind, and Mike was able to produce that picture.

He brought over samples of tile, travertine coping and other materials, and really walked us through the process. For the plaster, he showed me pictures of pebble plaster, but I couldn’t really tell what it was...so he brought samples of that too. It feels like the ocean floor...not totally smooth, but not rough either.

We went with it and we love it. Our existing pea-gravel deck was covered with a non-slip Spray-Deck surface the color of sand. The shallow pool beach entrance continues that color until it turns to an aqua, Mediterranean blue. The water just looks radiant...it’s a nice rich color. And the new tile and coping blend perfectly.”

Not only does Steve love his beautiful new outdoor living space, he loved the communication and service provided by Bratton Pools. “I’m a school teacher, so I couldn’t take off to be there during the day, and I wasn’t available by phone except for one small window each day. Mike worked with me. I never took off work during construction, and the communication with me was always precise...which I really appreciated. The same was true of the invoicing. One of her foster cats was having ongoing potty problems--diarrhea. “At one point this cat had been adopted, but sent back to me because of the health issue,” says Elizabeth. “I tried several veterinarians to help me get the cat healthy. op quiz: How do you know you live in Texas? Three answers: It’s October and you still have no use for a sweater. Pumpkins are fun, but they only remind you of crisp autumn nights elsewhere in the country. And you are running the air conditioner in both your house and your car.

“In Texas, our days don’t just get colder gradually. It happens all at once,” says Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat. “Once a cold front blows through, temperatures around here can drop 40 degrees in an hour.

And when you finally turn your heat on, you don’t want a rust hole in your furnace leaking carbon monoxide into your home.”

“What you need is a certified professional to inspect the inside and outside vent systems for blockage and leakage,” explains Brian. “You need an amp-draw test conducted on the blower motor to make sure your unit is running safely and efficiently. There are just too many wires and mechanical components that can go wrong, which is why so many countries make annual furnace inspections a mandatory thing.”

Brian acknowledges that most people’s impression of a “furnace safety check” is having a contractor come out, stare at the furnace, check off boxes on an inspection sheet that’s attached to a clipboard, and then leave. “But the truth is, a real inspection—a good one—is a lot more complicated than that. And it isn’t just about safety. A thorough inspection is also about preventative maintenance. You always want to catch a problem before it’s 30 degrees outside and your furnace quits working. No one wants to pay emergency rates. I don’t want you paying emergency rates.”

But the best reason for having your furnace inspected now instead of waiting? “It pays to not procrastinate,” says Brian. “Every heating contractor is considerably busier when the weather turns cold. That means fewer appointments are available to you when you need one. So it’s a good idea to get a jump on the ‘competition’ and schedule a visit from us now.” Or maybe your old system barely made it through the summer.
