asmine Naderi, D.D.S. at Best Dental Family and Orthodontics is a perfect example of community outreach in action. She recently hosted “First Responders Day” and “Military Day” at her dental practice. Dr. Naderi says, “For First Responders Day, we put out flyers at local police and fire departments. On October 28th, every first responder could come in for one free treatment. If they couldn’t make it that day, they were given a voucher. Any treatment was valid—a filling, extraction, root canal, cleaning, etc.—whatever they needed done. Many stopped by to see if the offer was real, and when we said ‘Yes’ they told their friends. We still have first responders cashing in vouchers!” First Responders Day was so successful, on November 19th Dr. Naderi made the same offer to all veterans: one free treatment and vouchers available for all active and retired military personnel. Making life a little easier for others is second nature to Dr. Naderi. This mother-of-two built her practice around a very simple idea: a place that takes care of everything dentalrelated for a family. She says, “I know how difficult it can be to run multiple places for dental treatment. Here at Best Dental, I can see and treat your entire family: all ages, including general dentistry, braces and aesthetics. My brother, Sanjar Naderi D.D.S, provides surgical care right here in our office surgical room, including wisdom teeth, implants and root canals. We take care of as much as we can, only referring out when a specialist ”Finally a dedicated dentist with passion and knowledge. This is a dental office for all your friends and family. hen Ali Hatamleh started feeling pain and pressure in his chest, he called his wife, a PhD nurse on faculty at UTMB. Ali says, “She told me to go to the ER. She probably knew I was having a heart attack. About 20% of me believed it was a heart attack, but I also thought (hoped) it was my digestive system or something. As I sat in my truck, the pain did not go away and the pressure in my chest was getting worse. I started to realize it might be a heart attack.” A quick search on his phone told Ali the closest emergency room to him was St. Michael’s Elite Hospital...0.8 miles away. “I walked in and told the ladies that greeted me at the desk that I had chest pain. I was trying to hand over my driver’s license and she had asked about insurance when my good angel came: Dwayne Chobotar, the Director of Nursing at St. Michael’s. Dwayne said, ‘Chest pain? Come over

here!’ He saved my life. He only cared about me; he was not worried about the insurance and paperwork.” “Dwayne and Dr. James Ferguson were excellent,” continues Ali. “They knew exactly what was going on. When I saw how they worked as a team, I was relieved. I knew I would be saved. They gave me medication to relax me and relieve the pain while preparing to transport me to Houston Methodist Sugar Land to have a balloon and stent procedure. The ambulance transition was very easy. Within 30 minutes, the life-saving procedure was underway.” A 24-hour emergency room that guarantees wait times of 15 minutes or less in a comfortable and cozy environment, St. Michael’s Elite Hospital recently expanded to include inpatient hospital services. “We are a concierge-concept hospital with eight emergency room beds, two triage rooms, and seven inpatient beds,” says co-founder Dr. Shannon Orsak. “And

our commitment to all of you: to provide the best care possible.” “I strongly recommend St. Michael’s,” says Ali. “They are very professional and showed me that they care about the patient first. That means a lot to me. They saved my life.”

onnie Small moved to the Houston area with her son in April of 2016. They transferred from Charleston, South Carolina when Connie was offered the position of Financial Clearance Manager with M. D. Anderson Hospital. She began working in hospital finance right out of college. Connie loves the hospital setting and the interaction with her staff and the public. In her new position she manages a team of thirtyfive Financial Counselors and Revenue Cycle Managers. Relocating from South Carolina to Texas meant leaving behind family, friends and trusted medical practitioners. Ten months after their move, Connie drove herself to the Emergency Room where she met neurologist, Dr. John Volpi, who diagnosed and treated her mini TIA. Connie continues to see Dr. Volpi on a regular basis and consults with him prior to any medical procedures that could affect her cerebral vascular system. Having a stroke at 51 was a rude awakening for Connie, in its wake she has created a network of local medical practitioners she can trust. At the first of this year, Connie noticed that her left ankle was swollen and there was some discoloration of the skin surrounding that area. After seeing her primary care physician, they recommended that she make an appointment to see Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Prior to calling Dr. Baltazar, Connie consulted with Dr. Volpi, and he gave his approval as well. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Connie says, “Dr. Baltazar is very professional. I immediately felt at ease with him and his staff. They were warm and welcoming. Dr. Baltazar listens and asks for your input to make sure you understand the information he gives you and that you are comfortable with your decision.” Once Dr. Baltazar conferred with Connie’s neurologist she scheduled her procedure right away. Baltazar carefully explained what would happen during both of my procedures, and they went exactly as planned. When I was nervous, he even prayed with me. Q: What is the goal of regenerative medicine? A: To prevent unnecessary surgery and get back to daily living without pain. Q: What issues can be treated? A: Any orthopedic condition from head to toe! Mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow are used to treat severe issues like bone on bone arthritis, large tears in the ligaments and tendons, or meniscus tears. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is used to treat mild to moderate issues (PRP requires only a blood draw). Prolotherapy, an irritant solution requiring no blood draw, is used to treat low level issues. Knee pain, spinal issues like sciatica and degenerative disk disease, joint issues, and even headaches can be improved with regenerative medicine. Q: My doctor has offered amniotic, umbilical or placental products. Aren’t these stem cells? A: No, they are not. Studies have shown that these products contain no live stem cells. In

Q: How do I know if I am a candidate? A: A one hour initial evaluation that includes a physical exam and diagnostics like ultrasound to determine your issues is first completed. Then based on findings and your health history, you are given a candidacy rating for expected outcome. No one is too old for regenerative medicine!

llen Grant has severe astigmatism in both eyes. “One eye can be 100% corrected with glasses,” says Allen. “The other cannot. About five years ago, my ophthalmologist sent me to a cornea specialist. The specialist said he could solve this problem, he just needed to refer me to an optometrist. He asked where I live, and when I said Sugar Land he said he knew just the person: Dr. Tom Arnold with Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land.” Dr. Arnold is one of very few doctors in Texas who fits custom scleral contact lenses. A member of the Global Specialty Lens Symposium, Dr. Arnold travels the world speaking about scleral lenses. Dr. Arnold says, “These lenses are largediameter gas permeable contact lenses specially designed to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the ‘white’ of the eye (the sclera). In doing so, the irregular cornea is functionally replaced with a perfectly smooth optical surface to correct vision problems. Scleral lenses can be very effective for patients with severe astigmatism like Allen.” “My vision was perfect with the scleral lenses!” reports Allen. “But unfortunately, my eyes are extremely sensitive to most things, including preservatives and medications. After about eight or nine months, my eyes could no longer tolerate the foreign object.”

To correct his vision as much as possible, today Allen again wears glasses. “I do not regret the referral to Dr. Arnold one bit,” says Allen. “He is fantastic. He is extremely knowledgeable and very friendly...and an avid researcher on many different eye issues. If I didn’t know better, I would think he’s an ophthalmologist. I now have high pressure in both eyes. Dr. Arnold has tried various drops that have worked for awhile, and I’m actually getting to a point where I’m considering surgery. Dr. Arnold has referred me back to an ophthalmologist. I’m following his lead. I have so much confidence in Dr. Arnold that I would not choose anyone else to take care of my optical needs.” “I have nothing but high praise for Dr. Arnold. I’ve referred him on multiple occasions. onor. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word honor is defined as “high respect; great esteem” and “the quality of knowing and doing what is morally right.” In a chaotic time such as divorce, honor may seem like an old-fashioned concept. But in truth, it must be the guiding principle of every family law attorney. It is therefore with great honor that the the highly prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers announces that Ronique Bastine Robinson, board-certified family law attorney and founder of Bastine Law Group, is now a Fellow. AAML is an organization of the nation’s top matrimonial attorneys, recognized for their high degree of professionalism and ethical standards. Each Fellow must have at least 10 years of experience as a family lawyer, endeavored to encourage the study, improve the practice, and elevate the standards of matrimonial law. She must have extensive trial experience as lead counsel and substantial settlement experience. It is no surprise that ®

Ronique is the only Fellow with an office in Fort Bend County. “If you’re going through a divorce, you’re not alone,” says Ronique. “There are four divorces every minute in this country. That’s 2.4 million divorces a year. When trust has been shaken, it’s very hard to trust anyone, including your family-law attorney...but trust is what I cultivate. When my clients come to me, they know I bring the full weight of my experience into the courtroom. They know that as their advocate, I am 100% on their side. At Bastine Law Group, we are in relentless pursuit of obtaining the best results for our clients.” Happily Ever Afters usually have some bumps along the way, but one of those bumps should never be your legal representation. “There are times when family become strangers, and strangers become family, but the love I have for my family is why I work so hard for yours,” says Ronique. “This holiday season, if you need help, call us for a consultation. Our Gift to You and Your Family

To Help You Discover Your Beautiful Smiles! by Marie Page

“I

’m proud to be a native Texan,” says Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S.. of Stafford. “I grew up in Beaumont, received my undergraduate degree from Lamar University, and my Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. My kids were raised here, and since I’ve been practicing at this same location since 1982, I’m now seeing second and third generations of patients. It’s a wonderful feeling—a family feeling—when I watch patients grow up and then bring their own kids in to see me. At our office, new patients are always treated like family. Because if experience has taught me anything, it’s that while knowing ‘how’ to do your job is certainly important... it’s knowing your patients that truly makes the difference.” What that means is taking every patient’s comfort level into account, even if that patient hasn’t sat in a dental chair for twenty years. “I’m here to help with any and all of your dental needs,” says Dr. Lomonte. “What’s great about working with new patients, especially ones who haven’t seen a dentist in quite a while, is showing them how

stress-free modern dental care is. No matter the procedure—whether you’re getting a root canal, some fantastic new advances in straightening like Invisalign, or even a cosmetic service like porcelain veneers—it is virtually painless. When there’s nothing to stress out about, you can actually relax and maybe even have fun!” Dr. Lomonte would like to extend a warm welcome to you. “Your smile is our number one priority. We only give you what you want and need. We never push unnecessary procedures, and we always work together to give you beautiful results! I would love for you to join our family!”

Waterfall

Next to My House? B

ecause you didn’t winterize your sprinkler system’s backflow system! Alan’s Plumbing Master Plumber Luke Burkhalter says, “It’s one of our most common calls after a hard freeze. People wake up to a nice fountain or waterfall spewing from the sprinkler system’s pressure vacuum breaker, usually located on the side of your house.” “The pressure vacuum breaker is an important component of your irrigation system,” explains Luke. “It provides protection against backflow—or back siphoning—of water from the system to your home’s freshwater supply, your drinking water. There’s a misconception out there that if you turn off your system in the garage, the system is off. That’s not true. The pressure vacuum breaker is the start of your sprinkler system, and it remains on even when the system is off in the garage. If it freezes, the top blows off and you get the waterfall. But that doesn’t have to happen. There are a few simple steps you can take to prevent seeing that waterfall this winter (and the repairs that follow!).”

1. Turn off your sprinkler system controller in the garage. 2. Close the vacuum breaker shutoff valves. This turns off the water to the system. These are generally two butterfly handles. Turning them perpendicular to the pipe turns them off. 3. “Bleed down” the vacuum breaker. This drains any water caught between the valves. “Bleed” by taking a flat head screwdriver and turning the test cocks on the side of the unit to parallel. Leave the test cocks open and allow the water to drain. Now you’re ready for the freeze! Luke says, “Sometimes those butterfly handles are rusted off or broken. If you can’t get them fixed, improvise by covering the backflow system with a horse blanket or vacuum breaker blanket. And if the top does blow and you see that waterfall in your yard, you can stop it temporarily by turning off the water to your house, or just shutting of the bottom valve to stop the leak. Then give us a call, we can cap it off and repair the system. We keep extra pressure vacuum breaker parts on our trucks this time of year for this very reason. And

while we love to visit, we encourage everyone to winterize their system. This is an extremely preventable problem!” Alan’s Plumbing is a local Fort Bend company owned by Luke’s dad, Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. His Uncle Chris is also a master plumber, his brother Beau is journeymanlicensed and studying for his master plumber license, and his brother Jake (recently engaged to Becca Long!) is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. Their mom Jennifer, Luke’s wife Chelsea, and Katie Johnson answer the phones at Alan’s Plumbing. The addition of accountant Cathy McFarland, journeymanlicensed plumber Jeff Johnson, and apprentices Jaime, Trevor and Christian make this the best and most trusted plumbing company in town. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of Alan's Plumbing!

Medical directives and powers of attorney are also part of your estate plan. It’s not the most pleasant topic to talk about, but it’s necessary for the benefit of you and your loved ones.” Estate planning is not a “one-size-fits-all” situation. Margie explains, “Today’s families have lots of different dynamics, situations unique to them. Your estate plan should be just as unique, making sure your wishes are carried out exactly as you want them to be. With our online lives growing as complex and diverse as our offline lives, digital assets are also an important piece of the estate planning puzzle. Federal privacy laws protect us to a point where it’s difficult for our loved ones to take control of our online presence. However, The State of Texas has a set of statutes that supercede federal law for online privacy. With this language in your will and power of attorney documents, your executor or power of attorney does have the authority to request passwords for all of your digital assets—including email, photo, social media, website and bill payment accounts—when the time comes. If you already have your legal documents in place, consider amending to include this language.” Wrap 2019 with peace of mind and a well-planned legacy that’s unique to you. fter a toilet overflowed while Kay Dildy was not at home, her entire house flooded. “Everything needed repair,” says Kay. “All of the flooring had to be replaced except for the kitchen and bathrooms. I needed some new cabinetry, new baseboards, sheetrock repair and paint...and I wanted new countertops and a new sink in one bathroom. I had hired a contractor and learned he could not finish the job. A friend had recommended I stop into Lone Star Floors to see what they have. There, I met Ziad Mukhaimer and he took me under his wing. He walked into the job that was started, and took care of everything. I could not be more pleased!” “Ziad gave me a great price,” continues Kay. “When I wasn’t sure of what I wanted, he made suggestions. Ziad did all of the contracting for the entire house. He really went above and beyond! During construction, he was here when he said he would be here, and the crews did what Ziad told me they were going to do. One day he had a crew here until 6:30 or 7 to finish...I’m sure they were not happy, but Ziad was making sure all was done properly. He was very professional, and that counts for a lot!” Lone Star Floors is locally-owned and operated by Ziad and his cousins Mohamed Naser and Imad Mansour. While they started nearly 25 years ago as a flooring store, today Lone Star Floors has grown to include full kitchen, bathroom and home remodeling—including plumbing, shower glass, painting and granite. “I absolutely recommend Ziad and Lone Star Floors,” says Kay. “I can’t say enough nice things about him...and believe me, I’ve had contractor experiences that were not good! When I say I am extremely pleased with the work, it’s because I understand everything he did. My late husband worked in construction for 40 years. He did quality control for a major homebuilder, and we did a lot of flipping houses. I know what quality work looks like. I absolutely recommend Lone Star Floors. They did the best job on my flooded home that anybody could do!”

Taylor says, “December 18th is our Service of Consolation. This service is designed for anyone struggling to find joy in the season—missing loved ones, divorce, job loss and other crises. Anyone who has lived any amount of time has experienced grief. This service is a safe space to acknowledge that grief.” At Sugar Land Baptist, every Sunday service in December is an in-depth look at the Biblical characters in the Christmas story. This series culminates with the Christmas Eve service. “Our sanctuary is always beautiful,” says Taylor. “But it’s especially beautiful at Christmas. our memory often changes as you grow older, but memory loss that disrupts daily life is not a typical part of aging. For example, it’s normal to have occasional memory problems, such as forgetting the name of a person you’ve recently met. However, Alzheimer’s is more than occasional memory loss. It’s a disease that

causes brain cells to malfunction. Common signs could include forgetting important dates or events, asking the same questions over and over, and increasingly needing to rely on memory aids or family members for things they used to handle on their own. The holidays can be challenging for anyone caring for a spouse, parent or friend with Alzheimer’s or dementia. They may find the added strain to their daily responsibilities overwhelming. If you know of someone in this situation, let them know that The Auberge at Sugar Land offers regular monthly meetings all year long for spouses and for friends and family who are managing the care of someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Linda Lavinson, L.C.S.W. leads two regular monthly meetings for spousal support on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from 11am to noon. She also leads a discussion/ support group for friends and family on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 6pm to 7pm. Linda is the Memory Care Director and has been with The Auberge for almost 15 years. Let The Auberge be a resource for you. The entire staff at The Auberge at Sugar Land is dementia care certified. They are trained to meet the residents as they are today; celebrating their abilities and

successes, while supporting them as their normal life continues to change and evolve. urely you have seen it. You can now purchase CBD anywhere and everywhere. But did you know there is no federal oversight on the production of CBD? Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph., founder of local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, says, “CBD is an all-natural product that helps maintain overall health. But if what you are purchasing is not analytically certified, it’s hard to say what other dangerous impurities or fillers you might be putting into your body, or even if the amount of CBD it contains is accurate. We’ve seen the fallout of rogue vape pens...the same could happen with CBD.” When you purchase CBD at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, you can purchase with confidence. “All of our CBD products have been analytically certified,” says Dr. Campbell.

Cannabinoids play an important role in supporting your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), the system which helps maintain homeostasis or optimal balance in the body.” Consumers are turning to hemp plant CBD—a cannabinoid that won’t get you high—for many of these conditions. “The most common are depression, anxiety, pain

They use cannabis instead.” There are many ways to take CBD, but the most common are tinctures (oil droppers) which are used sublingually under the tongue, capsules, and topical applications like salves and patches. on-invasive and pain free with no down time, Vera Soto started “Ultimate Look” treatments at Ultimate Beauty Skin Rejuvenation & Body Contouring back in July. “There really is no pain at all,” explains Vera. “I went once a week. We targeted my stomach and back area (the love handles!). Each treatment took about an hour and a half. It’s very relaxing. I just sit and let them do what they do. With some additional diet changes, continued exercise and drinking enough water, by August I was down 11 pounds. Today, I’ve finished treatment and I weigh 125 pounds. I’ve gone from a size 8/10 to a size 4!” Forty-seven-year-old Vera has tried everything. “I had been stuck at 140 pounds forever,” says Vera. “I’ve always worked out and had a pretty decent diet, but the pounds didn’t budge. I’ve even worked out with trainers. Everyone said difficulty losing weight was part of getting older. I did not want to hear that. I tried Coolsculpting, and I did have temporary results...but then the weight came back. I’ve tried injections and pills. You name it, I’ve tried it. Then I found ‘Ultimate Look.’ This is by far the best results I’ve had!” “Ultimate Look” is a three step state-of-the-art radio frequency, cellulite and fat reduction system. The three steps consist of targeted fat and cellulite loss with “Lipo Sculpt Lite” and “Ultrasonic Cavitation,” and skin tightening with “Therma-Lift.” The technology is like none other in the Texas region. All procedures are non-invasive and absolutely pain free, with zero down time. Ultimate Beauty Skin Rejuvenation & Body Contouring is locally owned by Joslyn M. arc and Susan Rieke are native Houstonians who might never have known each other if they hadn’t gone away to college. While they were attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas, a friend of Susan’s told her, “I’ve got the perfect guy for you!” Although a little skeptical at first, Susan says, “As soon as I met Marc, I knew he was right.” After graduation, the two married and came back to Houston to work and raise a family. Marc and Susan have three grown children and just recently celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. While growing up, Susan loved horseback riding in Wimberly and swimming with the swim club at the Shamrock Hilton. She enjoyed athletics but found that her height sometimes proved to be a disadvantage. As she got older, she found herself leaning forward as she walked, which caused stress and pain in her lower back; and sometimes, even made it difficult to sleep. When Susan told her neighbor about how much her back was bothering her, her neighbor immediately recommended Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center. She said, “You’ve got to try Dr. Harris. He’s not real close, but you’ll be glad you went.” Dr. Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982 and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. His natural, noninvasive, gentle approach promotes relief from pain.

Susan first visited Dr. Harris in May of 2016 and, as promised by her neighbor, she was glad she did. As a matter of fact, Susan says, “After I saw Dr. Harris, I wondered why I hadn’t done something about my back sooner. Dr. Harris is such a warm and friendly person. Working with him has made quite a bit of difference for me. Besides the treatments, Dr. Harris has helped me focus on the best way for me to stand and walk properly. I’ve been very happy with my results and would highly recommend him. He’s top notch! Also, don’t wait like I did. Go now. Take care of your body and enjoy the benefits.”
