Improve Your Health and Wellness with Organic Herbal Supplements

Robin Anthony, founder of Renu Herbs, has been involved with herbs since she was 15. “My grandfather was into herbs,” says Robin. “And my aunt and I started drying herbs. I discovered herbs are my calling, and I take it very seriously. I love helping people improve their health and wellness. I studied with a European chemist and herbalist to become a licensed herbalist before launching Renu Herbs.”

All Renu Herbs formulas are all natural and third-party tested for purity…they are free of herbicides, pesticides, and heavy metals. Robin works with a holistic chemist to design every formula. More than 20 years ago, she started selling Renu Herbs at a kiosk. Today, thanks to many loyal customers, Robin has a retail store, and Renu Herbs are also available online.

Robin’s colon cleanser is regarded by many of Robin’s customers as the “American Express.” Robin says, “Funny story…many people tell me they think of me when they go to the bathroom! Colon Cleanse is a unique blend of herbs that gently dislodges trapped waste from your colon, leaving you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and lighter. It improves the body’s natural detoxification process and improves regularity.”

Brazilian Tea is one of Robin’s newest offerings. “Brazilian Tea reverses the effects of candida and yeast overgrowth,” explains Robin. Not sure if you have candida and yeast overgrowth? Symptoms include brain fog, constant fatigue, joint pain or muscle aches, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, weight gain, and intense bread and sugar cravings.

Another winner and part of her detox line, Robin’s Organic Tea Leaves have been on the market for more than 15 years. “This tonic is great for eliminating hot flashes,” says Robin. “It’s a proprietary blend of herbs that naturally cleanse and reduce liver toxicity. Hot flashes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and sleepless nights are all signs of a toxic liver.”

Hair Growth Vitamins are a superfood formula made from alfalfa, bee pollen, sea kelp, moringa, and spirulina. Robin says, “There was a point in my life where I was under a lot of stress. My hair started breaking and shedding. These five superfoods give the hair everything it needs to grow and thicken.” Want to see results? Check out Robin’s hair in her picture!

Renu Herbs is one of the greatest things to happen to my husband,” continues Robin. Robin is married to former Houston Astro and LA Dodger, Eric Anthony. Together, the couple has four children. “Eric is a healthy retired Major League Baseball player. He’s not beat up, he maintains a healthy weight, he has no arthritis, and he’s very energetic!”

A ClassicLegac y

At the early age of seven, Tiffany Sebastian opened her first business, an honor system candy store in the corner of her dad’s company. From auto to real estate development to farm-to-table concepts and back to the auto industry, Tiffany has spent a lifetime in the business world. Today, Tiffany and her husband Jeff own Classic Chevy Sugar Land and Classic Chevy HWY 6. “It’s a beautiful thing to be an entrepreneur together with my husband,” says Tiffany.

Classic dealerships are NOT your typical dealerships. The famous Classic slogan, “Relax, and enjoy the difference,” means everyone is treated like family. Tiffany and Jeff bring this relaxed environment to the Sugar Land/Houston area. Tiffany says, “We are so blessed to be part of the Classic family of dealers founded by the Texas Automobile Dealers Association’s 2023 Legends award winner.”

“I’ve been in the auto industry for 26 years,” continues Tiffany. “Buying a car is the 2nd largest purchase most people will make in their lifetime (homes are first). Allowing us to be a part of that process is an honor. Our job is to help you decide what you actually need, assist you through the process, and make sure we are available to help after the sale. To us it’s much more than just a sale, it’s after the sale that makes the difference. We genuinely care about you and your family. We are here for you.”

“Jeff and I also take great pride in hand selecting the people that work with us. We look for the Classic qualities of integrity, honesty, and compassion in every person we hire.” Classic Chevy Sugar Land and HWY 6 employ more than 400 individuals in our community. Nearly two years ago, Tiffany and Jeff launched Carbingo. “Inventory was short,” explains Tiffany. “We had to adjust to the demands. At Carbingo, our daughter Alivia plays a key role in purchasing people’s vehicles, allowing our dealerships to have an ample supply of pre-owned inventory for our community. Alivia enjoys learning all of the aspects of the different departments at the dealership. We are happy to have her here with us, so she too can accommodate our customers in the same way that we do in the future. My dad always taught me that if you work hard, do the right thing and take care of people, amazing things will happen. I try to always keep that mindset, and I’m passing it on to my children.”

What’s next for this entrepreneurial super couple? “I can’t say yet,” laughs Tiffany. “But we do have something exciting coming soon! Stay tuned!”

Fort Bend County.

So BIG…Yet So Small!

Ican’t believe it’s already May. I think this is my 10th UpClose Magazine Successful Women in Business issue, and the magazine’s 24th!

In every issue of UpClose, we bring to you the amazing stories of our local business owners here in Fort Bend County. In this particular issue, we selected women business owners who’ve put in the time–the blood, sweat, and tears–to create a successful business. As the behind-the-scenes person interviewing these women and writing their stories, I had the honor of witnessing the tiny connections that give Fort Bend its small town feel.

When Keller Williams Southwest agent Sapana Patel met Dr. Sunaina Bhuchar Likhari at our photoshoot, she said, “I don’t know you, but I know your mom!” Dr. Likhari’s mom was an eightyear member of the FBISD school board. Our new FBISD elementary is named Sonal Bhuchar Elementary (opening Fall 2023) after Dr. Likhari’s mom.

Dr. Deanna McDonald also recognized Dr. Likhari immediately. As a student at Clements High School, Dr. Likhari had shadowed Dr. McDonald. “Dr. McDonald performed the first c-section I ever saw in person!” says Dr. Likhari.

Both Alan’s Plumbing and LaDonna Marie with Art of Skin have been with UpClose Magazine since it was started 27 years ago by Publisher Gina Pizzini. (Gina’s also a successful woman business owner!) Today, LaDonna’s son Christian works for Alan’s Plumbing. Gina says, “I’ve watched Christian grow up. It’s hard to believe he’s here at our photoshoot taking photos for his ‘big boy’ career.”

In this issue, we’ve put the spotlight on our area Successful Women in Business. In June, we’ll be featuring the men. I can’t wait to hear the little connections these guys have too. I’m sure there are many. If you know a successful businessman that deserves

to be featured, please let us know.

I also wanted to take a moment to address those in our community affected by the COVID-19 economic downturn, and those worried a recession could affect their current sales career. Here at UpClose Magazine, we understand your worry! Remember this: Your skills are highly valued, and you deserve stability. If you seek a local, home-based sales role with UpClose Magazine, let’s talk!

The Second Annual Sugar Land Arts Fest Brought A Weekend To Be Remembered

The second annual Sugar Land Arts Fest, presented by PrimeWay Federal Credit Union, was a huge success. Once again, the Sugar Land community enjoyed two days of Arts, Taste, and Music. More than four thousand people had a fabulous weekend visiting over a hundred artists’ booths, drinking hand-selected wines, eating delicious food, and enjoying live music at the awardwinning Smart Financial Centre Plaza.

This year’s festival promised to be bigger and better than ever before, with a wide range of artistic options, and the goal was accomplished! Attendees could see and purchase works from local, national, and international artists, including paintings, sculptures, glass, photography, jewelry, and pottery. This year also included a children’s art activity area for children to create their own works of art!

Along with the wine and beer garden, and delicious food truck options, the festival featured even more live music with a variety of musicians, including “Tribute to George Strait,” featuring Derek Spence, “The Ziggy Band,” “Bubba Westly,” “Flash Back,” and more!

Bridget Yeung and Stacy Borgfeldt have co-chaired this exciting event for the last two years and were the original visionaries of an arts fest in Sugar Land. Both continue to

make plans to grow this event each year.

Tim Stubenrouch, Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation Board President, says, “We are very excited about the success of the 2nd Sugar Land Arts Festival and look forward to many more years of this exciting and entertaining event! The funds raised by this event support the Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation and are used to promote the cultural, performing, and visual arts in Sugar Land. We thank all of our sponsors and this community for helping us continue this mission.”

Sugar Land, Texas, is known for hosting some of the best events in the region. Thanks to everyone who joined us to celebrate the arts in Sugar Land.

Stay tuned for information about next year’s festival!

Jim Pyle’s Story

JimPyle and his kids discovered Keller Williams Southwest (KWSW) agent Sapana Patel when they were bored one weekend. “I wasn’t looking for a home,” says Jim. “But the kids and I had nothing to do, so we started looking at houses online. There was one we liked that was listed by Sapana. We met with her to show us the house.”

That house didn’t work out, but Jim liked Sapana. He says, “She’s such a good person. She understands what you’re looking for, and she’s good with kids and family. We decided to look at other houses. Next thing we knew, we had found the perfect home. It was a random act of God; just perfect!”

Jim’s also sold two homes with Sapana as his listing agent. “Sapana knows so many real estate agents,” explains Jim. “We had people lined up for both of our open houses. She takes great photographs, and her marketing is excellent. Both times, my home sold so fast that Sapana had to negotiate a lease back to give me time to move out. But that’s ok, the opposite situation–where you’ve already bought a home and can’t sell the current one–is much worse.”

Sapana knows the Sugar Land and the Fort Bend

County housing market. She’s a longtime community leader and a member of the KWSW Agent Leadership Council. Commissioner Patel is on Sugar Land’s Planning and Zoning Commission. She’s involved in FBISD schools, including serving as PTA President at Commonwealth Elementary and PTO Vice President at Fort Settlement Middle School. Sapana is a past HOA President of the Telfair community. She’s currently serving on the Fort Bend Education Foundation gala committee, and she’s the HOA delegate for the Telfair community.

Jim says, “Sapana loves where we live, and she’s invested in this community. She’s well-connected–she literally knows everyone on friendly terms–and that gives her an edge in real estate. Sapana has the inside track on what our city and county will look like five to 10 years down the road. She knows what’s coming up that is attractive, and what’s coming up to avoid. All of that is important when buying a home.”

“Sapana’s just fantastic,” adds Jim. “She does an amazing job, and she’s very personable…she’s become a friend of the family!” Your

Local Alan’s Plumbing was founded nearly 30 years ago by Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. Alan’s licensed team includes his brother Chris and his son Luke, both of whom are also Master Plumbers. Alan’s son Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license. His son Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. For 28 years, Alan’s wife Jennifer has served as the Alan’s Plumbing office. She’s been the voice on the phone when you call. Today, Alan’s Plumbing is introducing the next generation as family friend Katie McFarland assists Jennifer with the Alan’s Plumbing office.

Katie was born and raised in Missouri City. She attended the same schools as Beau, Luke and Jake. From Boy Scouting, to swim team, to pee-wee football (where the boys played and Katie was a cheerleader), Katie has always been on the sidelines “cheering” on the Burkhalter family business.

After attending Texas A&M to study sociology, Katie worked in real estate in Bryan/

College Station. There, Katie’s customer service skills flourished. She loved working with and talking to clients. Although the world is big and the opportunities were endless, Katie’s heart was drawn back home. She ultimately realized that Fort Bend was the perfect community to start a family and raise her daughter, four-yearold Hadley.

Katie says, “I had the honor to start working for Alan’s Plumbing in 2017. Boy, what a full circle! I have so many amazing memories of growing up with the Burkhalter family. But a constant memory that always stood out was Jennifer’s devotion to both her family and the company. She was involved in all of her sons’ school activities and never missed a game or a Boy Scout meeting. I vividly remember her carrying around her spiral notebook, a pen, and her cell phone. She was ALWAYS ready to schedule and dispatch Alan to plumbing calls…then once she was off the phone, she was back in mom mode. Our community has always admired her

For The Job!

ability to juggle running a business while still being an active and involved parent. Jennifer encompasses what a familyowned business is all about. I can only hope to fill the shoes she has walked in for 28 years.”

As the Alan’s Plumbing office transitions to the new generation, it’s also becoming an all-digital plumbing company. Same great service, but these days you’ll see the Alan’s team completing your service call on their IPads (instead of the old pencil and paper!). In addition to the Burkhalter family members and Katie, this plumbing team includes journeyman-licensed plumber Jaime and tradesman-licensed Trevor and Christian.

Next time you call Alan’s Plumbing, it’ll most likely be Katie on the phone. “I can’t wait to assist you with all of your plumbing needs!” says Katie.

The Dentists

For parents of young kids, getting them to brush their teeth can take some creativity…even for the pros like Drs. Shilpa Chandiwal, Cindy Hurd, Chanica Veranunt, and Gail Joiner at local Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry.

“Between the four of us, we have five children,” says Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry founder, Dr. Shilpa. “Like all parents, we were so excited when the baby teeth finally poked through around eight months. But then we had to practice what we preach: We had to keep those teeth clean. I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is really hard…even for a dentist!’”

The American Dental Association recommends you start brushing your baby’s teeth before they even have teeth. Dr. Shilpa explains, “Brushing at this stage won’t look like how you imagine. Simply wipe your baby’s gums with a wet, soft washcloth or gauze every day. The goal is to reduce your baby’s oral hypersensitivity and set them up for success for toothbrushing in the future. The face is such a personal area, and it takes time to adapt to new sensations in the mouth. The earlier the concept of ‘brushing’ is introduced to your baby, the more quickly your little one will learn.”

“But let’s be real,” continues Dr. Shilpa. “Even if you introduce brushing early, some toddlers will still hate brushing their teeth. For these kids, try making teeth time fun! There are lots of fun toothbrushes out there. By allowing your child to choose their favorite, they’ll feel in control. Or how about finding a fun toothpaste flavor? You could even create a little menu: Have two toothpaste options available…giving your child control of the situation every single time you brush. Take turns brushing with your child to avoid power struggles, and you can also role play. Let your child practice brushing on stuffed animals, or let them practice brushing on you. If your child thinks she’s allowed to brush your teeth, it creates an open invitation for you to go and brush her teeth.”

Dr. Shilpa opened Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry in Sugar Land back in 2012, and she opened the Katy location in 2015. Two years ago, the Sugar Land location relocated to a bigger office. Dr. Shilpa employs more than 10 women, almost all of whom are moms. “I’m proud to say that I have accomplished my dream, and I am living

it,” says Dr. Shilpa. “I love my staff. We are all strong women, and we wear multiple hats. We’re entrepreneurs, moms, and more. We’re making it happen. I want to wish a very ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ to all the moms out there. Keep making it happen…you’re all doing a great job!”

my Jackson and her husband Juan love to eat shaved ice (snowballs). “Juan used to take our girls every day to get shaved ice,” says Amy. “It’s the best! We joked that we should buy a shaved ice machine and put it in our house. So for Father’s Day, I bought Juan a machine so we could make our own.”

“To make shaved ice, you need blocks of ice,” continues Amy. “Juan and I were shocked to learn that the biggest ice supplier in Greater Houston is downtown! We thought this was inconvenient for so many given how many shaved ice vendors there are out here in the suburbs. We decided to become an ice manufacturer. At Jax Ice & Treats, we sell 10lb and 12lb ultra-purified ice blocks. Our customers include snowball vendors, fishermen, ice sculpture artists, and more. By summer, we plan to launch our own shaved ice truck with 52 flavors. At the moment, we only make shaved ice for family and friends…and we love seeing the smiles good snowballs put on everyone’s faces!”

Of course, the love of a good snowball requires a dentist to take care of that sweet tooth. Amy says, “Juan and I have

Juan was in dental sales at the time, and he told me Dr. Lomonte was different. That I could trust him…Dr. Lomonte was worth the drive to Stafford. Juan was right! Dr. Lomonte completely calms my nerves, and he makes things simple. I started with cleanings, and then I allowed Dr. Lomonte to completely redo my smile with Invisalign and veneers. The process was painless. Today, my teeth look natural, and they’re so straight. I’ll always love shaved ice, but I have a great smile and a healthier mouth thanks to Dr. Lomonte.”

Postpartum Reduce by Half Recovery Time

Deanna McDonald, MD of local Sugar Land OB/GYN Associates has practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 25 years. Delmie DePuma-Aparicio, owner of local True Recovery Lymphatic Massage, is one of Dr. McDonald’s patients.

“I’ve known Delmie for more than 20 years,” says Dr. McDonald. “Her three daughters are my patients as well, and I delivered their babies. After the birth of each of her grandchildren, Delmie put together a plan of regular lymphatic massages for the new mommy to aid in her recovery. When I saw how well Delmie’s daughters recovered, I began to refer my new mothers to True Recovery Lymphatic Massage.”

What is lymphatic massage? It’s a gentle massage that opens up the lymph nodes, allowing the lymph fluid to flow freely. Human beings have 600-700 lymph nodes spread throughout the body. Most of them are in the area of our intestines (abdominal area), our neck and head, inguinal (groin), and axillary (arm pits). Lymphatics is where our daily “life and health” battles are won or lost. If the

body is compromised in any way, including childbirth, the lymphatic system slows down and does not work smoothly and properly. The body is not getting the vital lymph fluid it needs to heal itself. Postnatal lymphatic massages help heal the postpartum body after the trauma of pregnancy and childbirth.

Dr. McDonald says, “After delivery, a woman’s body experiences extra swelling. The body has to handle getting rid of the extra fluids from the pregnancy. Postnatal lymphatic massage keeps the swelling in check by moving the fluids from the extremities to the central areas and opening the body up to natural healing. My patients with postnatal lymphatic massage recover way faster than those without…cutting the recovery time by as much as half. There’s a comfort factor here too. Fluid on the ankles causes discomfort. Expediting fluid absorption reduces the skin tension, relieving this discomfort.”

“The effects of postnatal lymphatic massage are even more pronounced with a c-section,” continues Dr. McDonald.

“As with any surgery, during a c-section we are administering additional fluids, and there’s more edema or swelling. The body also has a higher blood clot risk after the complications of surgery. Postnatal lymphatic massage gets both the healing lymph fluid and the blood supply moving. It’s very beneficial for the new mother.”

Delmie recommends setting up a postnatal lymphatic massage plan before delivery for optimal results. “That way we can get started right away,” says Delmie. “We’ll have you back to your pre-pregnancy body in no time!”

While Dr. Lisa Mathew was a student at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, she did a rotation with Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph., owner of local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. After graduation, Dr. Mathew took a position with a retail pharmacy. She says, “I was there for a year. It was a different environment from what I had envisioned. It was large, we had a lot of turnover, and I didn’t feel connected to my patients.”

That all changed for Dr. Mathew when Dr. Campbell launched the Sugar Land

location of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. Dr. Mathew says, “Dr. Campbell reached out to me and asked if I would help open the new location. I was interested. It was appealing because I was at the point in my life where I was about to start a family. But I had no idea at the time how much I would love the job.”

In 16 years, Dr. Mathew has watched both Campbell’s Compounding stores grow and flourish. “It’s such a blessing,” says Dr. Mathew. “As a compounding pharmacy, we are able to tailor medications to a patient’s specific needs. For some, it’s dosage. Most manufactured medicines

come in four to five different dosages. When a doctor is prescribing that drug, they come as close as they can to what the patient needs…which means the patient may be overmedicated or undermedicated. We can make that medication in the exact dosage required by your physician, even if you’re the only customer that requires that specific dosage. Compounding is also a great option for kids that can’t swallow pills or individuals with a G-tube. We can make required medications as a compounded liquid and even flavor it. Everything is completely customizable.”

“I wouldn’t still be working here if I didn’t love it,” continues Dr. Mathew. “This small, family-run business is family friendly and patient focused. I feel we are really able to provide continuity of care. It feels really good to see improvement in my patients, and for those that need a medication adjustment, I’m able to meet with them and see how to intervene. All of us here at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy are connected to the community. I see many of the same families, and I consider my patients my friends. They ask about my two boys and my husband, and vice versa…I know their families and check how they’re doing. I don’t think you can get that kind of culture anywhere else!”

Aging In Place

Teri Gilberg (better known as The Re-Modelista) has coordinated remodeling projects in Fort Bend County for more than 10 years. Teri says, “Lately, we are doing lots of tub to shower conversions so people can stay in their homes. Just like with any remodel, the possibilities are endless when it comes to these conversions. We can create showers without doors and ramped curbs, adding accessories like a shower bench, insets for toiletries, handheld plumbing fixtures, and grab bars. Walk-in tubs are also wildly popular. A walk-in tub is a tub with a door. It’s designed for those that have trouble climbing in and out of the traditional bathtub style. A walk-in tub eliminates much of the hazards of slipping and falling. Clients find my pricing on walk-in tubs to be much less than other companies.”

We had a chance to talk to one of Teri’s more recent walk-in tub clients, a local lady choosing to age in place named Harriet. Harriet says, “I found Teri through UpClose Magazine. I was drawn to her because I like to support small, female-owned businesses. At first I was thinking of only replacing the whirlpool tub with a walk-in tub. Teri came by and took a look around. She took lots of measurements and made recommendations I hadn’t thought of. I didn’t feel pressure at all, Teri was willing to do as much as I wanted to do. After talking with Teri, I decided to replace the countertop with quartz, put in new flooring, and update the lighting to can lights in addition to the walk-in tub.”

For the project, Teri comped Harriet one hour of time with interior decorator Louise Ostrander. “Louise was great,” says Harriet. “She did not let me overthink it, and she helped me choose what

would look good. I went to Floor and Decor to pick out the quartz countertop Louise had suggested. Teri sent me to Richmond to pick out the walk-in tub. It was really nice to see it before I purchased it! Teri took care of everything: scheduling the tile guy, a plumber, a tub person, etc. I found her very efficient; she knows what needs to be done to move forward. Her subcontractors are excellent and cleaned up very well. Teri sends missives about what will happen today, tomorrow, and the next day. Every single time I called Teri, she called back within five minutes. She’s an excellent communicator.”

“I love my new bathroom and the conve nience of the walk-in tub,” continues Harriet. “I can lay back after a long day, enjoying the air jets on the bottom and the water jets from the side. It’s wonderful!”

What You Do

over 2000 years ago, Originating in Northern India

is a form of Indian classical dance that uses rhythmic footwork, hand gestures, and facial expressions to tell stories. Ekta Popat is the founder of local Storytellers School of Dance (SSD). She feels honored that she is able to pass this graceful, intense, and challenging art form on–with its true authenticity–to the next

SSD started in 2017 with about 30 students. It has since grown to almost 200 students, ages three to 76. Ekta has danced and taught dance most of her life. What she does at SSD is beyond just teaching dance. She offers a complete educational program with a curriculum that has a syllabus, structure, exams, graduations, and a path for a degree. As students progress through the curriculum, they earn different color scarves (dupattas) that signify their progress. SSD is affiliated with Bharati Vidyapeeth University (India) and is one of the only fully accredited examination centers in the Houston area.

“I am extremely passionate about what I do,” says Ekta. “My students know and appreciate how much time and effort goes into learning this artform. I am very generous with my time. I am available for every single dancer whether it be for exam preparation or a performance at school. I also love it when students ask for extra one-on-one teachings, or stay a little after

class to review something. I also like to connect with each student individually as much as I can. My students are an extension of my family.”

For additional exposure, Ekta regularly offers her students dance workshops with professional artists from India, including her own Guru, Smt. Shambhavi Dandekar. A critical part to a student’s growth is performing on stage. Since its inception, SSD students have continued to have the opportunity to perform competitively, for various community events, for charity events, and in “Reflections,” SSDs own large-scale, annual recital.

In addition to teaching, Ekta hopes to spread awareness of the benefits of Kathak. Even the most basic routines require endurance, fine and gross motor skills, and a deep understanding of music and rhythm. Kathak learning stimulates both the right and left brain development, as well as the development of math skills. It helps improve concentration, focus, stamina, and balance. Practicing Kathak is said to be meditative and spiritual. It requires a lot of discipline and perseverance.

Ekta grew up in India and moved to the USA as a teenager. She has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Masters in Business Administration. Ekta spent several years in the corporate world, but after starting SSD, she realized this was her calling. As the saying goes: “Love what you do, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Ekta has been married for over 20 years and is a mother to two high schoolers.

Great Parents, Great Life!

After graduating from the University of Houston, Dr. Debbie Richards worked for Child Protective Services (CPS). Debbie says, “I really didn’t like working in investigations, and I found the adoption part of CPS the most rewarding. I left CPS and went on to earn a Doctorate in social work from the University of Southern California.”

Twenty years ago, Debbie launched Rainbow of Love (ROL) in Fort Bend County as a domestic adoption agency. Today, behind a motto of “Great Parents, Great Life!” ROL has grown to a full-service social service agency, including counseling, parenting classes, youth homeless assistance, and temporary shelter.

The adoption program at ROL is special because adoptive parents are required to attend training, go through background checks, medical exams, and have references. Only a limited number of prospective adoptive parents who apply for a home study are approved. ROL looks at the quality of the parent. “We want to give the birth mom (and father) peace of mind knowing their baby will be in really good hands,” explains Debbie. Birth parent(s) can select adoptive parents from a list of choices (if desired), and after placement can regularly view photos of the child through a special program facilitated by ROL. ROL does not discriminate based on religion, culture, or gender. While most adoptions are semi-open, ROL does still allow closed adoptions, and it works with the State of Texas to place foster children into adopted homes.

The youth homeless assistance program at ROL helps homeless youth or young mothers find a shared living space, often paying for the first couple of months so the individuals don’t have to go to a shelter. The counseling program assists youth going through a crisis. Parenting classes are offered for those referred by CPS or those divorcing and referred by a judge. “Parents also come in and take the classes just to be a better parent. All are welcome!”

Celebrating 40 Years!

This year, Fort Bend Music Center celebrates 40 years! Marketing Manager Lindsey Thielsen says, “My mom and dad, Terry and Rick Cochran, started out as a piano moving company back in 1983. Over the course of the years, we have transformed into one of the largest Yamaha piano dealers in the nation. Our full-line music store includes a band department and on-site service shop, and a lessons studio offering music lessons of all types.”

This local establishment is proud to remain family-owned and operated…where all three Cochran women play vital roles in the company’s

success. Terry is the company Vice President, and she also runs the piano service department. Lindsey’s the Marketing Manager, and Lindsey’s twin sister Ashley serves as CFO, taking care of all the financials.

Want to dip your toe in the music waters? Summer camps are a great way to get a taste of what Fort Bend Music Center has to offer. These camps are perfect for all levels of musicians, including beginners. Kids (or adults!) ages 4+ receive the full, immersive musical experience over five days. CLEAR SKIN

in a Whole New Light

t’s been a little over a year since Sugar Land native, Sunaina Bhuchar Likhari, MD, FAAD, launched Sweetwater Dermatology. Today, Sweetwater Dermatology is the only dermatology office in the area to offer the AviClear laser for cystic acne.

“Acne is the most common complaint I hear,” says Dr. Likhari. “Until now, Accutane has been the go-to treatment for moderate to severe acne. Accutane requires bi-monthly blood draws for all patients and monthly pregnancy tests for females…and it has potential side effects. It is a highly regulated drug, and monthly visits with the doctor are required for refills.”

Lasting results for moderate to severe acne with minimal downtime, minimal side effects, and no prescriptions. Schedule your AviClear consultation today.

While Accutane is still an effective option, AviClear may be the more desirable option. Dr. Likhari explains, “AviClear is a laser treatment that specifically targets the source of acne: the oil glands on the skin. The three, 30-minute sessions administered one month apart are well tolerated by most, including teenagers. There are no prescriptions, minimal downtime, and minimal side effects…and the results are long-lasting.”

Recently, aesthetician Maria McKenzie joined the ranks at Sweetwater Dermatology. “Maria offers comprehensive, medical-grade facials using the latest technology: Bela MD,” says Dr. Likhari. “Think of Bela MD as a combination hydra facial and diamond microdermabrasion, allowing targeting of specific skin concerns and achieving personalized results.” Additional cosmetic dermatology offerings include microneedling, vampire facials, chemical peels, laser hair removal, vascular lasers for blood vessels, IPL (intense pulsed light) for brown spots, and a fraxel laser for acne scars.

A graduate of Clements High School and Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Likhari gives back at many community events, including the Fort Bend Education Foundation gala. “I have deep roots here,” says Dr. Likhari. “My mom, Sonal Bhuchar, served on the FBISD school board for eight years. The new FBISD elementary school, Sonal Bhuchar Elementary (opening Fall 2023), is named after her. This is my hometown, and I thank you all for embracing Sweetwater Dermatology!”

Integrity. Excellence. Affordability.

In 2017, Dr. Srishti Mehta conceptualized Indigo Orthodontics as a practice based on the core values of integrity, excellence, and affordability. Dr. Mehta says, “Thanks to the support of this community, we have grown. In 2022, we opened a new, larger location. Then in September, to ensure we can maintain the quality and personalization of care you’ve come to expect, we welcomed Dr. Angelica Herrera to Indigo Orthodontics.”

“Dr. Herrera shares my team’s devotion to hard work,” continues Dr. Mehta. “She attended dental school and earned her Masters in Orthodontics in her home county, Venezuela. When Dr. Herrera moved here, she had to go back to school to be recertified. Orthodontics is her passion, and she spent a very long time pursuing it in the United States. Dr. Herrera is bilingual…she’s fluent in Spanish. Here at Indigo Orthodontics, Dr. Herrera and I work

The addition of Dr. Herrera sets the stage as Indigo Orthodontics moves toward becoming an all-digital practice. Digital smile designs for braces are on the horizon. Dr. Mehta explains, “Today, we use the same brackets for everyone. Digital smile design will allow us to create custom braces solutions specific to your teeth and movements… creating a custom smile!”

Indigo Orthodontics is an all-woman team of 24 dedicated to making patients feel welcome and at home. “My ‘girl gang’ is a diverse group of women striving to be the best part of every patient’s day,” says Dr. Mehta. “We are committed to improving and serving our patients’ needs and the needs of this community. We treat both children and adults.”

Dr. Larry Caldwell says, “EZ-Pedo has created a totally new approach to restoring the natural appearance of a child’s smile. This ceramic crown is designed to overcome many of the limitations of other prefabricated, pediatric dental crowns.”

EZ-Pedo is the first metal-free, ceramic, solid zirconia crown for children approved by the FDA. Composed entirely of one solid, tooth-colored material, these crowns look extremely aesthetic, both from the front and on the inside of the mouth. Dr. Derek Steinbring says, “Resin crowns are a revolutionary breakthrough in the battle against tooth decay. These pediatric dental crowns are the most natural looking crowns we’ve ever seen. They blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth so much so, that you might forget your child even has them! As one mother remarked, ‘A smile that doesn’t

New, FDA-Approved Weight Management Drug

Semaglutide injections for weight loss are now available at local Sinang Medical & Associates. Founder, Arlene Tinker, MD, says, “Texas has a really bad profile in regards to obesity. At my practice, my focus is combining traditional medicine with functional medicine to achieve optimal results. My weight loss program is different because my focus is on long term weight loss. I don’t want you to yo-yo or rely on meds for the rest of your life. Excess weight is a manifestation of the unhealthiness inside of you. Your health requires more than just calorie restriction. Our program focuses on wellness.”

“Recently approved by the FDA for weight loss, semaglutide injections are one of the tools available in my program for individuals that need weight loss help,” continues Dr. Tinker. “Many people lose a tremendous amount of weight with it. I offer the injections both as a home program and an in-office program. I prefer the in-office program for guidance and education. Because one of the side effects of semaglutide injections is nausea, the product I use combines semaglutide with vitamin B6. The B6 reduces nausea.” For patients not interested in semaglutide injections, Dr. Tinker has other approaches available.

“Once we have the weight off, we continue the focus on education,” continues Dr. Tinker. “The fact of the matter is: You know you’re overweight, and you continue to eat. Why? You have to learn about your relationship with food. You have to understand why you’re overweight. My

program meets you at the point of your weakness. For many, the weakness is control and cravings. I can recommend allnatural supplements and plant extracts that deal with those cravings. I also collaborate with a health coach to assist my patients on their journey and provide them with additional help and guidance.”

Right now is the perfect time to get your body summer ready, and Dr. Tinker is currently accepting new patients. Schedule your visit today by calling 281-247-5300 or visiting www. sinanghealth.com.

EMPTY BOWLS In OUR Community

Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort by artists and craftspeople in cities and towns across the country to feed the hungry in their communities. Our local Fort Bend Empty Bowls benefits East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry (EFBHNM).

“What we do at EFBHNM,” says Development Director Stacey Williams, “is serve the basic human needs of families in our community in a temporary financial crisis. We see at least five new families a week, and it’s often not who you would expect. So many of our neighbors are affected by job loss, a change in family dynamics, and other unexpected situations that leave them in need of assistance.”

In 2022, EFBHNM assisted 15,838 adults and 12,766 children experiencing food insecurity.

Empty Bowls is EFBHNM’s largest fundraiser of the year. Dinner tickets include a simple meal of appetizers, delicious soups, and bread. For a nominal donation, attendees have the pleasure of

selecting a bowl from the many oneof-a-kind, donated bowls handcrafted by members of the Fort Bend community, including some designed by local artist Albert Goldreich. EFBHNM Executive Director Vickie Coates says, “The empty bowls serve as a reminder of all the empty bowls in our community and around the world.”

This amazing event includes silent, live, and dessert auctions, a bid board, and a wine and whiskey pull, all benefiting EFBHNM. “Danny Ray & The Atlantic Street Band is returning to Empty Bowls for another fun evening out,” says Stacey. “Please join us to really see what EFBHNM is all about!”

From Romantic Date Nights to Competition Dancing

Four years ago, husband and wife team Chris and April Muller launched Arthur Murray Sugar Land. Back then, it was just April and Chris teaching individuals and couples every dance step imaginable: latin dancing, ballroom, country western, swing, salsa, and more! Today, thanks to the amazing Fort Bend community, the studio has a team of seven.

“Many of our students first came to us to learn a wedding dance,” explains April. “Father-daughter and mother-son dancers who didn’t want to ‘look silly’ at the wedding. For these students, we completely customize the experience. For some, we create the experience around the song they’ve chosen. Others have a dance they’ve been dying to learn, so we go with that. The students’ personalities also play in. If there’s a jokester in the relationship, we bring that playfulness into the dance. But rest assured, everything we do is fun and easy to learn. It’s a few special moves for wedding dancing customized just for you!”

It doesn’t stop there. Once the wedding has passed, many students return to Arthur Murray Sugar Land as hobby dancers. “It’s a great weeknight hobby, particularly for empty nesters,” continues April. “They’re spending time together, and it’s not sitting on the couch. We can help with everything from simple, sexy date nights in the kitchen to dancing in competitions and showcases. We’ve taken our students out social dancing and on cruises. Right

now, we have dancers preparing for a competition in Rome. Anything you can envision, we can offer it.”

You’ll also find the Arthur Murray Sugar Land staff and students showcased throughout our community. Up next is the Meals on Wheels Cinco de Mayo fundraiser. Then on June 3rd, Arthur Murray Sugar Land students will be presenting a Broadway-inspired theater show at Inspiration Stage. Call 713899-3606 for tickets…it’s a great opportunity to see what Arthur Murray Sugar Land is all about!

Passionate About Treating Children

“For more than a decade, my philosophy for my practice has been to make going to the dentist fun for children,” says Dr. Faisal M. Khan, founder of local Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. “As my practice grew, it was imperative I find pediatric dentists who enjoyed treating children as much as I do. I’m so lucky to have Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik and Dr. Annie Zheng on my staff!”

Dr. Zheng first worked in general dentistry. Not quite sure it was the right career path for her, Dr. Zheng soon came to realize that her passion was treating children and helping them have a healthy and beautiful smile. Switching gears, Dr. Zheng pursued two additional years of training in pediatric dentistry, gaining the knowledge she needed to best treat and manage children’s dental needs. A native Houstonian, Dr. Zheng graduated from UT Health School of Dentistry as a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. This mother of one is thrilled to be part of Dr. Khan’s Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental family.

After completing dental school, Dr. Ritwik worked at the Kuwait Ministry of Health where she was the primary dentist for elementary school children. Dr. Ritwik had never thought about pediatric dentistry until she came home one day and her mother said, “I’ve never seen someone so happy after work. You must really enjoy working with children.” That was the turning point for Dr. Ritwik. She moved to the United States to pursue a specialization in pediatric dentistry. Today, this mother of two is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD), serves as a consultant for the ABPD, and is a member of the examination committee. Dr. Ritwik

How Old Is Your

“Life changes quickly,” says Mohamed Naser of Lone Star Floors. “When you bought your home, it was just you and your spouse. Along came pets and kids and a lot more activity than you ever expected. Do you even know how old that carpet was when you bought the house? Do you even remember how long ago you actually cleaned that carpet? Or is that stain that will never come out starting to nag you? It may be time to update your flooring to make the home fit better for your current way of living.”

In the last 10 years, your choices in flooring have expanded immensely. “If you’re looking to update your flooring or looking for great options for the future, give us a call,” says Ziad Mukhaimer. “Just one small change can reshape your whole space and your home for years to come.”

is also a Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at UT Houston School of Dentistry.

Dr. Ritwik says, “Dr. Khan ensures that Dr. Zheng and I have access to the equipment, materials, and other specialized items that we need. We’re able to take care of children as if they were our own. I go to bed happy knowing we are providing the best pediatric dental care possible.”

April Showers Bring May Mosquitoes

Remember all the rain that fell in April? The May mosquitoes might be here..but you can control them.

Local BUGCO Pest Control offers state-of-the-art mosquito control options for residential homes, commercial businesses, HOAs, municipalities, industrial complexes, apartment complexes, and more.

“Our mosquito misting systems are extremely popular with homeowners and businesses with outdoor entertaining areas,” says BUGCO founder Chris Millward. “These misting systems provide a daily, quick kill of the mosquitoes around the perimeter of your home, yard, or outdoor entertaining area.”

When you install a mosquito misting system with BUGCO, your system is specifically designed for your home with strategic nozzle installation. “The system itself is discrete,” continues Chris. “It meshes with the look of your home and yard. It operates for very brief periods in the middle of the night, when mosquitoes are most active. Our systems use a water-based, biodegradable pyrethrum extract from the chrysanthemum flower to effectively control your mosquito nuisance while being safe for kids and pets. We gen-

erally set it to spray two to three times per night, and mosquitoes flying or resting are instantly hit with a lethal dose. A remote con trol feature allows you to operate the system at your command. If you’re having a BBQ or pool party, just hit ‘Mist Now’ about half an hour before guests arrive to prep your yard.”

For HOAs, municipalities, industrial complexes, apartment complexes, and more, BUGCO offers truck-mounted mos quito fogging systems. “Our trucks usually operate between midnight and 2am,” says Chris. “During this time, most residents are indoors and beneficial insects are not active. Since mosquito populations can rebound quickly, truck-mounted mosquito fogging is most effective when repeated once or twice a week.” BUGCO’s ServiceDisabled Veteran-Owned Small Business status is beneficial to state and government agencies needing to fulfill federal and state set-aside requirements.

When you engage with BUGCO, you are provided a service agreement that outlines the services agreed upon and the pricing. There’s no contract and no hidden or surprise fees. Founder and CEO John Onofrey says, “If at any point you have questions, you can give us a call or access your account through our online customer portal. Most importantly, you are free to cancel the service agreement at any time without penalty.” Additional BUGCO mosquito control options include backpack fogging, yard treatments, and mosquito traps. BUGCO also has treatment options for general pest control, roaches, termites, fire ants, bed bugs, fleas, ticks, and rodents both commercially and residentially. Now that the April showers have passed, let’s knock out the May mosquitoes…that way we can sit outside and enjoy the May flowers!

A Ray Fauxof Sunshine

in Historic Downtown Rosenberg

t A Tropical Haven, Rosenberg native Tracy Drabek combines her love of painting with her confidence in making naked people feel at ease.

What? “I worked for a plastic surgeon in Houston for more than 10 years,” laughs Tracy. “It required seeing naked people and not making them feel judged. It’s also where I got started in sunless spray tanning. Our clients and my co-workers wanted to be tanned, so I purchased the equipment and started spraying them. That was nearly 20 years ago!”

In 2005, Tracy moved home and launched A Tropical Haven where she provides custom sunless spray tanning with a 100% guarantee. “We custom blend your color for the result that you want,” explains Tracy. “No orange…I hate that word! If you do not like your tan, come back, and we’ll fix it.”

Tracy’s making the world a happier place with a little bit of faux sunshine, and she’s doing it in a historic building built in the 1920s. “I bought this building and the one next to it five years ago,” says Tracy. “I love my building. I remember coming here with my grandparents when it was Blase Dry Goods. There’s so much history here. I love the mom-and-pop feel, and I want you to feel it too when you visit A Tropical Haven.”

A Tropical Haven’s clientele includes bridal parties, teenagers preparing for

prom, body builders, and individuals wanting to tan for a beach vacation. “We spray people of all ages,” says Tracy. “My oldest client is 78…and she gets tanned on a regular schedule.”

In addition to sunless spray tans, the array of services at A Tropical Haven include high-end tanning beds with UV filters and an onsite esthetician providing skincare, waxing, facials, microdermabrasion and more. Bioidentical Hormones How Can

Improve My Health?

Potential benefits of bioidentical hormone therapy include:

• Relief from menopause symptoms: Bioidentical hormone therapy can help alleviate hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, brain fog, and irritability… just to name a few.

• Improved bone density: Hormone imbalances can contribute to osteoporosis. Bioidentical hormone therapy can help improve bone density and reduce the risk of fractures.

Dr. Julia Ward, founder of local Balanced Body Functional Medicine, says, “Bioidentical hormones are hormones that have the same chemical structure as the hormones naturally produced in the human body. They have amazing health benefits for both men and women after a certain age. I believe everyone looking to age gracefully and enjoy a great quality of life should consider bioidentical hormones.”

Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are the three main sex hormones. “Men and women have all three, just in differing amounts,” explains Dr. Ward. “These start to decline as we age, but they especially take a nosedive once we pass child-bearing years. In hormone therapy, there are synthetic hormones (i.e. Premarin and Provera), and then there are ‘natural’ or bioidentical hormones. Bioidentical means that they are chemically identical to what your body produces. This is in contrast to the synthetic hormones which usually come from pregnant horse urine.”

There are many reasons for maintaining your sex hormones at youthful levels…and it’s not just getting rid of the annoying symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, mood swings, irritability, fatigue, and insomnia (just to name a few). Dr. Ward says, “There is a common misconception that women go ‘through’ menopause, as if menopause is the only time they’ll experience hot flashes, night sweats, etc. Many women believe that once these symptoms stop, they are ‘through’ and don’t need to worry about anything else. In fact, once you are in menopause, you are never done with it. Your body will never go back to producing the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone that it once did when younger. If you want to age gracefully with as little signs of aging as possible, you will need to have your hormones balanced and at youthful levels. Bioidentical hormone therapy is really the cornerstone of any ‘anti-aging’ program.”

The first step is to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Ward. “At the consultation, we’ll discuss you…your needs and wants. Every person is different, and my end goal is always to do what’s best for the individual patient!”

Balanced Body

• Reduced risk of heart disease: Hormone imbalances can increase the risk of heart disease. Bioidentical hormone therapy can help restore hormonal balance and reduce this risk.

• Improved cognitive function: Bioidentical hormone therapy can help improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline.

BECAUSE YOU’RE WORTH IT

LaDonna Marie founded Art of Skin back in 2000. “Anti-aging has expanded vastly over the years,” says LaDonna. “And I’ve had the honor of growing with it. I love staying on the cutting-edge of technology. Our team is excited to announce that we recently added additional state-of-the-art antiaging treatments to our toolkit.”

“The new Rohrer Pixel8-RF addresses so many of my clients’ concerns,” continues LaDonna, “including diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and firming the skin on the face or body. It’s a microneedling system that’s non-surgical. It uses bipolar radio frequency and minimally invasive microneedles (with gold tips for comfort!) to tighten the skin. I love the Pixel8-RF because it’s very effective, and it requires little to no downtime.”

LaDonna has also acquired a Rohrer Spectrum Laser/IPL system. This multiuse system can be used for laser hair removal, Intense Pulse Light (IPL), laser vascular reduction, skin resurfacing, and tattoo removal. Art of Skin’s menu of services include the latest in cutting-edge fill-

ers and neurotoxins, hydrafacials, custom chemical peels, and skincare regimens.

A dream come true, this year LaDonna launched her own medical-grade skincare line. “Everything I’ve dreamt of is coming together,” says LaDonna. “I’ve created a boutique-style approach in a relaxing atmosphere. I’ve always thought outside the box when it comes to anti-aging, and it paid off. A natural, youthful approach to enhancement is my motto. If you’re looking for artificial results, I’m not your girl!” Dr. Julia Ward at Balanced Body Functional Medicine serves as LaDonna’s Medical Director.

Take a look at LaDonna’s UpClose Magazine pictures throughout the years. It does appear she’s found the fountain of youth, and she’s sharing it. Treatments and free consultations can be booked at www.theartofskin.co.
