ANNUAL REPORT

2021 – 2022

From the

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Hello and welcome to the University of the Ozarks’ 2021-22 Annual Report.

In the following pages you will read about many of the University’s achievements and milestones of the past academic year, highlighted by the opening of the new Thomas and Frances Wilson Science Center. As I’ve walked by the striking new facility in recent months, I can’t help but smile as I think about the Wilsons and how they first became acquainted with Ozarks. Thomas and Frances were founding members of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, Okla., and became acquainted with Ozarks through lifetime trustee Richard “Dick” Bagwell and his wife, Kay. Inspired by Ozarks’ mission of educational service in the Presbyterian tradition, the Wilsons have since established multiple scholarship and program endowments to support Ozarks students. They went on to fund the complete renovation of Munger-Wilson Memorial Chapel and the construction of the Wilson Family Chapel Plaza in 2015.

As Frances learned more about the need to renovate and expand the science center, she was moved by the stories of those in Ozarks’ past who had built and carried our science program so far. She was inspired by the grit and determination of legendary science professor Dr. T.L. “Prof” Smith and the generosity of Dr. Alvin C. Broyles, Ozarks Class of 1941, for whom the science center in the past iteration was named. And, so it is that this bright new marvel of modern science, research, architecture, engineering, and construction, the Thomas and Frances Wilson Science Center, stands as testament to the Wilsons’ enduring love for one another, their deep faith in God, and their desire to help young men and women achieve their educational dreams.

How the Wilsons became aware of Ozarks is a prime example of the power and value of relationships and how those relationships can change the course of an institution. In the following pages, you will see the names of alumni and friends who generously supported Ozarks and its mission in 2021-22. Many of these supporters attended and graduated from this University and have lived first-hand the positive impact than an Ozarks education has had on their lives. Some of these supporters are current and former faculty, staff or board of trustee members who have lived the Ozarks mission and are determined to help it continue. And others, like the Wilsons, heard about Ozarks from a friend or colleague and are inspired by this University’s amazing 188-year legacy of transforming the lives of young men and women.

So, regardless of your “how” or “why,” thank you for your continued commitment to and support of Ozarks and its students. The University is uncommonly blessed to have such wonderful alumni and friends. And, if you have the opportunity, I hope that you will share the remarkable work that we’re doing here at Ozarks far and wide and invite others to join us in fulfilling our mission.

1 ///
Humbly, Rich
Regardless of your “how” or “why,” thank you for your continued commitment to and support of Ozarks and its students.”

“This experience has definitely broadened my horizons and exposed me to new people, cultures and ideas. As I go forward into the world from Ozarks, I will do so having met people from diverse backgrounds that I wouldn’t have been able to without this experience.”
GLOBAL Discovery

Sade

Seymour

Experiential learning is the process in which students develop knowledge and skills from direct experiences outside the Ozarks classroom. Sade Seymour, a 2022 communication studies graduate from The Bahamas, was heavily involved in media production through the University’s television station, KUOZ. She worked on and produced numerous livestream events during her time at Ozarks, which helped her secure a position at an Arkansas television station following graduation.

“I had many wonderful hands-on opportunities and experiences outside the classroom that fully prepared me for a career in either television, digital marketing or communications. I couldn’t imagine having a better college experience than I did at Ozarks .”

EXPERIENTIAL Learning

/// 14

Teaching EXCELLENCE

Wilhelmi Rev. Jeremy

Sometimes the most impactful learning experiences happen outside the classroom.

During Spring Break 2022, University Chaplain Rev. Jeremy Wilhelmi led a group of students to the U.S.-Mexico border for a week-long trip to view first-hand the immigration and border issues. The Ozarks contingent heard from people on all sides of the issue, including local citizens, immigrants from Mexico and members of the U.S. Border Patrol.

“I wanted to provide an opportunity for our students to see complex issues with their own eyes, hear the stories with their own ears and discern what is good and true with their own hearts. I wanted them to discern how the lens of faith should influence that discernment in complex humanitarian issues.”

Rhinehart Janna

As a first-generation college student, Janna Rhinehart graduated from Ozarks in May of 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and with the highest of academic honors (Summa Cum Laude). Following graduation, Rhinehart quickly landed her dream job as a junior high teacher and basketball coach in her hometown of Dardanelle, Ark., where she hopes to help other firstgeneration students attend college.

“I love being a teacher and coach. Getting to work with young people and having the opportunity to positively impact their lives, just as my teachers did for me, is something I’ve wanted for a long time. Ozarks and my professors made it possible for a first-generation college student to achieve her professional dreams.”

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS

“Ozarks provided me a solid foundation to launching my career. Progressive curriculum and an internship through the Career Services Office gave me a foothold into the digital marketing and advertising industry. Giving back to Ozarks is a way for me to pay it forward to leaders of our next generation and support the special place that is Ozarks.”

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS

“University of the Ozarks means love to me. When I was a student there, I was able to see what truly caring for people looks like. The reason I choose to give back is because I care and I want to give others help, just like I received help when I was a student. It is my personal challenge to be a source of support for today’s students.”

WHY WE SUPPORT OZARKS

“For more than 50 years, the University has been a special place for all the Figliulos and the site of many Alumni Weekend and Homecoming family reunions. Our experiences there, the friends we made, and the professors who mentored us are all a part of the tremendous legacy the University provided our family. It’s an honor to give back to a place that has meant so much to our family.”

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS

support Ozarks because I have always felt like I am part of a family in the University community. The relationships I’ve made and the people I’ve met along the way at Ozarks challenged and pushed me to be the best version of myself that I could be. I’m proud to be able to call this University home.”

WHY WE SUPPORT OZARKS

develop the knowledge and skills

need in our careers and work life and gave us friendships that have lasted throughout our lives. We want to give back to the institution that gave us so much. We have seen the impact that Ozarks has had nationally and internationally and we hope that our small contribution of time and money will help keep that influence alive.”
