From the

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Pray Bigger ... Those were the sage words that were conveyed to me by one of the University’s dear supporters during the early months of The Climb Higher Campaign. She believed we needed to set our sights higher for her beloved Ozarks and to have faith in God and our supporters to reach new heights. It was this kind of confident and can-do attitude from our alumni and friends that helped the University shatter its initial $55 million campaign goal and raise more than $73 million for scholarships, academic programs and facilities. Welcome to the University’s 2020-21 Annual Report. In the following pages you will read about many of the highlights of the past academic year, headlined by the completion of the most ambitious and successful capital campaign in University history. You will also see the long list of faithful alumni and friends who supported the University over the past year. As you read through our accomplishments and successes, you can easily see why I have so much pride for Ozarks and why I am honored to serve as its president. Since The Climb Higher Campaign kicked off on July 1, 2014, I have met with and talked to hundreds of alumni and friends. I heard concerns about out-of-pocket costs for faith-based education. I heard stories about how attending Ozarks had impacted their lives and how they wanted to ensure that future generations had that same opportunity for an Ozarks education. I heard about desires to support student travel and experiences outside of the classroom and requests to assist faculty through professional development and rejuvenation opportunities. And, I heard time and time again how our alumni and friends wholeheartedly want Ozarks to not just survive, but to thrive in the coming years and decades.

As you read through our accomplishments and successes of the past year, you can easily see why I have so much pride for Ozarks.” Richard L. Dunsworth, University President

Our alumni and friends not only shared these stories and desires, they backed it up with their prayers and their philanthropic support throughout this campaign. During this transformational period, more than 4,200 donors made 16,000 gifts to Ozarks, ranging from $1 to nearly $28 million. We had graduates from as far back as 1941 and as recent as 2021 show their support and trust in our future. This University is exceptionally blessed to have such dedicated alumni and friends. Their unparalleled commitment to student success exemplifies the spirit of generosity and philanthropy on which Ozarks was founded. As we near the 200-year anniversary of the founding of this University, we will continue to pray bigger as we advance Ozarks forward. Humbly,

HIGHLIGHTS

Campus Celebrates Largest Graduating Class in University History

• • • • • •

A total of 148 graduates from the Class of 2021 participated in the Spring Commencement ceremony, the largest graduating class in the University’s 187-year history. The University held Commencement on the soccer field for its first in-person graduation ceremony since December of 2019 because of the Covid pandemic. Also taking part in the ceremony were 25 members of the Class of 2020. The University celebrated in April the completion of the CLIMB HIGHER: A Campaign for Students, which raised more than $73 million for student scholarships, academic programs and facilities (See page 1). Shattering the initial goal of $55 million, the campaign engaged more than 4,200 supporters. The University received one million dollars from the Lilly Endowment to establish the Thriving in Ministry Program during the Spring of 2020. This program, based out of the Munger-Wilson Chapel, supports pastors of rural and minority-serving Presbyterian Churches throughout Arkansas. The University welcomed an enrollment of 836 students during the Fall 2020 Semester, the second-largest number in the University’s history. The numbers included 341 students from Arkansas and a record number of international students — 244 from 19 countries. In the 2021 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges,” Ozarks was ranked 5th overall and 3rd in “Best Value” among more than 70 Regional Colleges in the South Region. The University was also ranked 3rd in the South in the “Most Innovative” category, a new category based on “making the most innovative improvements in curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities.” The University’s Board of Trustees voted in April to freeze tuition for the 2020-21 academic year amid the uncertainty brought on by the Covid pandemic. It was the sixth time in the last eight years that the University has not raised tuition. Since 2013, tuition at Ozarks has risen just five percent. /// 4

HIGHLIGHTS University Theatre Receives National Recognition

• • • • • •

The University Theatre Program was recognized in the Spring for its 2020 production of “For Hurting Hands” with a national honor by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. The production, which was written and performed by students, was awarded the prestigious Citizen Artist Award. Rebecca Bailey, assistant professor of theatre, was presented with the 2021 Visonary Award by the Arkansas Coalition Against Sexual Assault for her work to “bring awareness and community engagement to the issues of sexual assault.” The business program established a new partnership with the Keyce Business Academy in Paris, France, to create an annual business competition with combined teams from the two colleges. The competition includes creating real-world business and marketing plans for local companies with the winners receiving an allexpenses paid trip to the other country. Petron Brown, a theatre and environmental studies major from The Bahamas, was presented with the 2021 Hurie Award, which goes to the outstanding member of the senior class as voted on by the faculty. The University converted numerous campus spaces into temporary classrooms, including the Rogers Conference Center, in order to meet Covid safety protocols. These and other adjustments and modifications helped the University avoid any major Covid outbreaks throughout the academic year. Dr. Yassine Dguidegue, assistant professor of sociology, and Dr. Isaac Hunter, assistant professor of psychology, were named the Bagwell Outstanding Professors in April.

GLOBAL Discovery

Jakobé

Durant A first generation college graduate from Destrehan, LA, Jakobé Durant graduated with honors from Ozarks in May 2021 with a degree in Spanish. Durant, who was also a captain of the University’s swim team, spent a year studying in Spain at the University of Huelva as part of a study abroad program. After graduating from Ozarks, Durant earned a full scholarship to study Spanish on the graduate level at the Spain university.

13 ///

“My year of studying abroad in Spain gave me confidence and opened my eyes to the many possibilities and opportunities out there. My career goal is now to use my education and skills to travel the world helping businesses expand their reach to other countries.”

Crystal

EXPERIENTIAL Learning

Oudomvilay Experiential learning is the process in which students develop knowledge and skills from direct experiences outside the Ozarks classroom. Crystal Oudomvilay, a May 2021 biology graduate from Paris, AR, spent the summer of 2021 as a postgraduate associate at the Yale School of Medicine. She assisted in armadillo research with her Ozarks professor, Dr. Frank Knight. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in exercise physiology at West Virginia University.

“This amazing opportunity at Yale has allowed me to grow as a scientist and I can’t wait to continue my studies in graduate school. The education I received at Ozarks and the chance to do research with my professors has made all of this possible and I am so thankful.” /// 14

Teaching EXCELLENCE

Dr. Isaac

Hunter

Dr. Isaac Hunter, assistant professor of psychology, encouraged some of his students to form the research team called the GLAMMLAB (Good Life and Meaning Making Lab). The self-proclaimed Glammies worked with Hunter on research topics such as a meaningful life and finding one’s calling. Several students had the opportunity to present their research findings at the American Psychological Association (APA) international convention.

“It is exceedingly rare for undergrads to meaningfully contribute to research. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to ask important questions, help to answer those questions, and then share those answers with the world. These types of opportunities really stand out for graduate programs and future employers.” 15 ///

Joelle “Joey”

Personal GROWTH

Varner December 2020 graduate Joelle (Long) Varner of Cabot, AR, could be the ideal model for a liberal arts education. The biology major took advantage of the University’s LENS program to earn minors in chemistry, Spanish and business administration while also being a Student Ambassador, a member of the women’s soccer team and involved in several student organizations. She plans to pursue a career in medicine.

“I can say whole-heartedly that Ozarks was a blessing in my life. I grew so much as a person, student, friend, soccer player and as a leader. That’s why I loved being a Student Ambassador and giving tours to prospective students. I want them to have the same incredible experiences that I did here at Ozarks.” /// 16 16 ///

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS “I chose the U of O for the memorial endowment for my mother because she was always a strong believer in education, not only as a person who sought learning for herself but one who provided education and instilled its importance to others as a teacher for 50 years. She always valued and cared about her time and experiences at U of O and always spoke highly of the University. I personally like the fact that the foundation of the University is rooted in Christianity, which I feel helps guide its mission. I know my mother’s legacy will continue on through this endowment.” KEN STROUD (with his mother, the late Mary Ann Weatherton S. Turley ’54) Long Beach, California

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS “I give each year because I believe Ozarks attempts to serve the needs and desires of students who prefer a small, private college over that of a state-supported institution. Most of the students come from small, rural towns and prefer the small college atmosphere. WHY WE SUPPORT OZARKS “NorthPark Presbyterian Church has been honored to support the incredible work of University of the Ozarks. We are thankful that a Presbyterian college supports students with learning differences in a caring and compassionate way while providing academic excellence. Our support grew stronger this year as we witnessed a young adult from NorthPark Pres enter the Jones Learning Center. Her parents shared with the committee had it not been for this University and the Jones Center, she would not have been able to attend college. Thank you for all you do to make young adults successful in their educational goals..” ELLEN MATA, DIRECTOR OF MISSION & OLDER ADULTS

WHY WE SUPPORT OZARKS “Loraine and I are fortunate to be in a position to give back to organizations that have been important to us over the years. Of course, one of these institutions is U of O. I believe that Ozarks helped shape me to become the person I am today. My father, Rev. David Pittenger, was the reason I ever heard of U of O and the driving force in my decision to attend. WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS “Coming out of high school, I thought a private college was out of my reach both academically and financially. My experience at Ozarks challanged me academically and personally to be the best student and person I could be. While my classes prepared me for my career, my connections on and off campus made through Ozarks helped me excel in my career. Through the support of generous donors and student aid, I graduated with an accounting degree and a promising career in public services, and with no debt!” CORY MAAG ’21 Clarksville, Arkansas

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS “Ozarks shaped my life in many ways. I made life-long friends and met my husband there. I received an exceptional, well-rounded education that allowed for continued degrees after Ozarks. I also saw many examples of kindness, service and generosity from the faculty and staff. My education at Ozarks was completely paid for by scholarships. I know that many of those scholarships were funded by the generosity of others. It is important for me to pass along that same generosity to others. ” DR. JESSALYN HALSTED ’08, Rogers, Arkansas
