From the

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Hello and welcome to the 2019-2020 Annual Report. The past academic year was surely one of the most difficult and challenging in the University of the Ozarks’ 186-year history, and that’s saying a lot for an institution that survived the Civil War, two World Wars, devastating fires, the Great Depression and numerous economic hardships within the last two centuries. As the Covid-19 pandemic hit in the spring, our students, faculty and staff displayed that same frontier grit that our founders exhibited when they established this college on what was then the American frontier in the early 1830s. Channeling that frontier resolute, we transitioned quickly to an all-online teaching format following Spring Break and, despite a few minor hiccups, finished out the semester successfully, thanks to the diligence and commitment of our entire campus community. Faced with numerous difficult decisions amid the pandemic, we relied on our Christian core values — including hospitality, service, justice and Sabbath — in the decision-making process. These guiding principles led us to commit to our faculty and staff that their jobs were safe and to opening up the residence halls throughout the summer to approximately 100 students who were unable to return home. These values also impelled our Board of Trustees to freeze tuition for the 2020-21 academic year, knowing the financial impact of the pandemic on our students and their families. The University was able to do these things because of the incredibly generous and life-transforming support of our alumni and friends. This support enabled the University to provide nearly $12 million in student scholarships, secure the technology and training to transition to an online learning environment without compromising quality, and have in place an emergency fund to assist students in need. This support also allowed us to continue our commitment of reducing student debt and making a private, Christian education both affordable and accessible, even during a world pandemic. University of the Ozarks is uncommonly blessed to have such wonderful alumni and friends and I will never tire of saying, Thank You!

Richard L. Dunsworth, University President

As an avid country music fan, I’m reminded of a quote by one of my favorite singers, Dolly Parton, who said, “Storms make trees take deeper roots.” Thanks to our many alumni and friends around the world as well as generations of dedicated faculty and staff, Ozarks’ roots are indeed deep. Humbly,

Rich

HIGHLIGHTS

Campus Makes Successful Transition Amid Covid Pandemic

• • • • • • •

In the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak in the Spring, the University made a successful transition to an allonline teaching and learning format following Spring Break in March. The University gave food and board credit adjustments for those students who moved off campus and provided housing throughout the summer for approximately 100 students who could not return home. In addition, the Board of Trustees voted to freeze tuition for the 2020-21 academic year amid the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic. A total of 137 degrees were awarded to graduates during the 2019 Fall Commencement and the 2020 Spring Commencement ceremonies (See page 17). The University entered into an agreement with the Greystone Preparatory School to house the program at Ozarks beginning in the summer of 2020. In its 17th year, the college-level military leadership program prepares candidates for nomination, appointment and success at one of the five U.S. Service Academies. The University welcomed an enrollment of 825 students during the Fall 2019 Semester, the second-largest number in the University’s 185-year history. An all-time high 112 students hailed from Johnson County, Arkansas, and there was also a record number of international students — 213 from 23 countries. In January 2020, the University was awarded the 2019 Pro Patria Award by the Arkansas Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves for its support of employees in the guard and reserves. In the 2020 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges,” Ozarks was ranked 7th overall and 19th in “Best Value” among more than 70 Regional Colleges in the South Region. The University took over the management of its physical plant operations, including maintenance, grounds and housekeeping, during the summer of 2020 in a move to improve oversight and efficiencies and to foster an enhanced sense of community and connection between staff and the University. /// 4

HIGHLIGHTS

University Establishes New Academic Support Program

• • • • • •

The University created a new campus-wide student academic support system led by the Jones Learning Center and the Student Success Center. The new program provides additional college transition support, life skills training and academic resources to the entire student population to improve student retention. In January of 2020, four faculty members — Dr. Yassine Dguidegue, assistant professor of sociology; Dr. Allison Freed, assistant professor of education; Dr. Warren Sconiers, assistant professor of biology and Dr. Sean Coleman, professor of biology — presented workshops at The Bahamas Agriculture & Marine Science Institute and at Aquina College in The Bahamas as part of an ongoing partnership with the country. The University implemented the Canvas online learning management system in the fall of 2019, which helped the University to successfully transition to an all-online teaching and learning format in March of 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the end of face-to-face classes. Jake Sawyer, an English and environmental studies major from Mena, AR, was presented with the 2020 Hurie Award, which goes to the outstanding member of the senior class as voted on by the faculty. The University launched a new certification program in data analytics during the summer. The all-online program is available for college credit for students and as a stand-alone certification for the general public. The new program meets the demand of the much-requested skill set by students and prospective employers. Dr. Christine Scott, associate professor of business, and Dr. William Eakin, professor of philosophy and German, were named the recipients of the 2019-20 Bagwell Outstanding Professor awards in April. Dr. Eakin retired following the academic year after teaching at Ozarks for nearly 30 years. /// 6

Student Life

HIGHLIGHTS

Graduate Success Rate Exceeds 95 Percent for Fifth Straight Year

• • • • •

A survey by the Career Services Office of 2019 graduates showed a 97 percent success rate in employment or graduate school placement (see page 2), the fifth consecutive year the success rate has been 95 percent or higher. The office also hosted its annual Career Fair in November that drew a record nearly 300 students and 40 businesses and organizations. Thirteen U of O students from six countries were selected as Millennium Fellows, a world-wide leadership development program affiliated with the United Nations Academic Impact program. The students’ work led to the University placing a renewed emphasis on student food security by revising food service policies for campus breaks and establishing the student-led organization Students Initiative for Food Security (SIFS). The Office of Student Life championed the creation of numerous new student organizations, increasing the number of student groups on campus from around 20 to more than 35. Among the new organizations were, OZK Campus Ministry, Ozarks Psychology Club, the Entrepreneurship Club, Ozarks Coding Society, Synergy Sounds, Students Without Borders, Ozarks Philosophical Symposium and Mediarks Visual Arts Club. More than 200 students took part in outings presented by Ozarks Outdoors. The excursions included activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, camping, hiking, mountain biking and film festivals. The University held a rededication ceremony in October 2019 for MacLean Residence Hall following the facility’s $10 million renovation. The initiative was the most extensive refurbishment project in the building’s 94-year history and included a fire sprinkler system, new central heat and air systems, an elevator and all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing components. The student housing capacity also increased from 170 to 220 and additional common areas and laundry facilities were created. /// 8

GLOBAL Discovery

Jakob

Case A senior from Keller, Texas, Jakob Case had never travelled abroad before spending 11 months in a study abroad program at Fukushima University in Japan in 2019--20. Case spent the time travelling the country and taking classes ranging from Japanese language and grammar, to Asian history and even a class on Anime, a popular style of Japanese film and television animation.

13 ///

“I’ve dreamed of studying in Japan for many years and thanks to Ozarks, I was able to do that. There were times it was frustrating and scary, but knowing I can succeed for an entire year in a foreign country has given me the confidence that I can do anything I put my mind to.”

Rebecca

EXPERIENTIAL Learning

McCarron Experiential learning is the process in which students develop knowledge and skills from direct experiences outside the Ozarks classroom. Rebecca McCarron, a Fall 2019 health science graduate from Covington, LA, said the internship clinicals she did as a student reinforced her desire to purse a career in pediatric occupational therapy. She is currently in graduate school at Arkansas State University.

“As I was going through my clinical experiences, I quickly realized that this was a career I wanted to pursue. I want to help people, especially the youth, find an independence within themselves that they didn’t think was possible because of a disability or injury.” /// 14

Personal GROWTH

Gloria

Cizungu

A senior business administration major from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa, Gloria Cizungu has combined a life-long love of cosmetics with an entrepreneurial spirit to create her own line of cosmetics called Buzuri, which means “beauty” in Swahili. She credits her classes at Ozarks — which ranged from marketing to international business to television production — for helping her pursue her career goals.

“The classes and experiences I’ve had at Ozarks have been incredibly rewarding and beneficial to me. Studying business while taking a variety of other classes has really opened my eyes to so many new things and given me skills and knowledge that I can use in my own business.” 15 ///

Natalie

Teaching EXCELLENCE

Dreyer Natalie Dreyer, head women’s soccer coach, regularly emphasizes community service and volunteerism with her team. She has led her players in projects ranging from shopping for children in Operation Christmas Child, to serving meals at the local police station, to hosting and participating in a Valentine’s Day dance at the local developmental disabilities center.

“Community service plays a big role in our soccer program. I tell our young ladies that when they join this program, they are signing up to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Everything they do makes an impact on someone’s life, and it can be as little as making someone smile.” /// 16

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS “At Ozarks, I had the honor of meeting people from different parts of the world. This ignited a passion to travel, which I believes creates a more well-rounded person, develops an unbiased mindset and truly cleanses the soul. Since Ozarks, it has been my mission to become a better person through the people I meet, whether working with Finnish product teams in Helsinki, driving keynote presentations in Amsterdam or enjoying some relaxation by scuba diving in Indonesia. My hope is that giving back to Ozarks will help ignite that same spark within inspiring minds and jumpstart their own adventure. ” RICK ARMSTRONG ’00 Seattle, Washington
