From the

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Dear Friends, What an amazing year! Thank you. As I commit the stories of Ozarks to memory, I become more and more confident that but for wonderful friends like you and those who came before us, Ozarks would have succumbed to one of the many previous challenges, whether it be the campus burning during the Civil War, the transition from Cane Hill in 1891, the lean years that President Hurie carried us through, or the challenging times when J.T. Patterson somehow made the budgets work for 50 years and 10 presidents. I often wonder if Ozarks would exist today without the relationships built by Presidents Davis and Ehren, the business foundations laid under the leadership of Presidents Qualls and Stephenson, or the expanding support nurtured and developed under President Niece. As you read the following pages celebrating record enrollment, life changing financial support and stories of amazing people, offer a prayer of Thanksgiving for the wonderful blessings that have been bestowed upon this University. Our friend, the Rev. Dr. Robert Bohl ’58, spoke on campus a few years ago during a rededication ceremony for Munger-Wilson Memorial Chapel and he marvelously summed up this sentiment in a speech titled, “God Must Really Want This Place to Exist.” The Rev. Bohl eloquently stated, “It is for us here to dedicate this place and ourselves to the great tasks remaining and to resolve that those who have preceded us shall not have labored in vain. Knowing that this University, under the power of God, shall not perish from the earth. So help us God.” Respectfully,

Rich

HIGHLIGHTS

Campus Welcomes Largest Enrollment In University History

• • • • • • •

The University welcomed an all-time record enrollment of 872 students during the Fall 2018 Semester, including the largest incoming class in University history (323). An all-time high 104 students were from Johnson County, Arkansas, and students also came from 25 countries and 27 states. It marked the sixth consecutive year of enrollment growth and a 49 percent increase since 2013. A total of 147 degrees were awarded to graduates during the 2018 Fall Commencement and the 2018 Spring Commencement ceremonies. The University surpassed the $46 million mark in July in its $55 million CLIMB HIGHER: A Campaign for Students. The five-year campaign places an emphasis on student scholarships as well as science and athletic facilities. The campaign will run through 2020. In November, the University held a rededication ceremony for the J.T. Patterson Administrative Services Office in memory of the long-time business manager. In front of numerous family, friends, alumni, faculty and staff, the newly remodeled office suite in the Mabee Administration Building was rededicated to honor Patterson, who served as business manager for 38 years before he died in 2000. The University helped facilitate the opening of a new restaurant, Kasper’s, in Voorhees Hall on campus as well as the Clarksville Community Health Center, a non-profit, walk-in medical clinic in downtown Clarksville. The University purchased and renovated a former Arvest Bank branch to bring the medical clinic to the area. In the 2019 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges,” Ozarks was ranked 3rd overall among more than 70 Regional Colleges in the South Region. The University took over the management of the campus bookstore in the spring and partnered with eCampus in order to streamline the learning materials process and provide expanded inventory for students. /// 4

University Theatre Shines in “Diary of Anne Frank” Production

• • • • • •

The University Theatre presented five showings of the powerful drama “Diary of Anne Frank” to rave reviews in October of 2018. The play received accolades from a respondent with the American College Theatre Festival, who presented the theatre company awards in scene design, sound design, dramaturgy, ensemble acting and two Irene Ryan acting nominations. The U of O team of Juan Fernando de la Cruz, Julio Molina-Pineda, Alec Merin and Richard Javier Rodriguez took first place in the 2019 Arkansas Undergraduate Mathematics Competition in February, the highest finish ever for an Ozarks team in the event. The University updated four new active learning spaces in Walker Hall to provide more collaborative spaces for interactive teaching and learning. The classrooms feature movable furniture and writable walls. Emilie Williams, a religion and philosophy major from Keller, Texas, was presented with the 2019 Hurie Award, which goes to the outstanding member of the senior class as voted on by the faculty. The University’s Pat Walker Teacher Education Program was granted accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) in June. The U of O program was one of 42 colleges and universities throughout the country that was granted accreditation at the initial-licensure level by CAEP through the year 2024. Dr. Warren Sconiers, assistant professor of biology, and Pam Terry, assistant professor of practice of education and director of early childhood professional educators, were the recipients of the 2018-19 Bagwell Outstanding Professor awards in April. /// 6

HIGHLIGHTS

Graduate Success Rate Tops 95 Percent for Fourth Consecutive Year

• • • • • •

A survey by the Career Services Office of 2018 graduates showed a 95 percent success rate in employment or graduate school placement, the fourth consecutive year the success rate has been 95 percent or higher. The office hosted its annual Career Fair in November that drew a record 250 students and more than 35 businesses and organizations. In June, the University named Matthew Eubanks as the director of counseling services. It is believed to be the first time the University has had a full-time dedicated clinical counseling position. The Office of Student Affairs organized a “Paint the Town Purple” pep rally in downtown Clarksville to kick off Homecoming Week and boost Eagle pride throughout the community. In collaboration with the Clarksville-Johnson County Chamber of Commerce, the Office of Student Affairs helped launch a new downtown monthly event called First Friday, which features live music, food trucks and lawn games for both the campus and Clarksville communities. More than 200 students took part in outings presented by Ozarks Outdoors. The excursions included activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, film festivals and even a fall excursion to the iconic Hawksbill Crag (pictured) in the Ozark Mountains. Ozarks Outdoors also hosted its annual Outdoor and Adventure Film Festival. More than 50 student presenters and 30 projects highlighted the seventh-annual Advanced Research and Creative Highlights (ARCH) Symposium in April. Alma Arredondo, Regan Puryear, Cristin Connor, Gracie Millar and Aubree Sisson took top honors in the annual event that allows students to showcase their projects. /// 8

Philanthropic

HIGHLIGHTS

Generous Alumni and Friends Donate $7.2 Million in 2018-19

• • • • • • •

The University received $7.2 million from 1,272 alumni and friends throughout the year for scholarships, academic programs and facilities. A total of 498 alumni, ranging from a 1941 graduate to members of the Class of 2019, supported their alma mater, including 112 first-time alumni donors. The percentage of alumni giving was 13.3 percent. The monetary gifts to Ozarks ranged from $3 to $1.1 million and the most popular gift amounts were $100 (382 gifts), $50 (305) and $25 (360). The newly named Office of Advancement and Alumni Engagement was established to better reflect the University’s efforts to build stronger life-long relationships with alumni and other external constituents. A low interest loan from the Pearl M. & Julia J. Harmon Foundation of Tulsa, OK, helped the University undergo a $10 million renovation project on the MacLean Residence Hall during the spring and summer of 2019. It was the most extensive refurbishment project in the building’s 93-year history and increased the student housing capacity from 170 to 220. Several new scholarship endowments were established by alumni and friends of the University during the 2018-19 fiscal year, including the Chris and Martha Allen Scholarship Endowment for teacher education, the Harmony Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund, the Lynda A. Stephenson Endowed Scholarship Fund for English majors and the John, Sue and Jennifer Fisher Endowment for the music and religion programs. A record 388 individuals, couples and businesses were members of the Aerie Club, the University’s athletic booster organization, an 85 percent increase over the previous year. /// 12

EXPERIENTIAL Learning

Ralph

Jean-Pierre Experiential learning is the process in which students develop knowledge and skills from direct experiences outside the Ozarks classroom. Ralph Jean-Pierre, a senior business administration major from Haiti, served an 11-week internship at Clarksville Connected Utilities in the spring. He worked with the management team to map, record and compile reports on easements.

“As a business major and someone who wants to learn as much as I can about infrastructure and the work place, the internship was incredibly rewarding. There is nothing like a hands-on experience to really learn about a company. ” 15 ///

Cristin

GLOBAL Discovery

Connor From the small north Texas community of Gunter, Cristin Connor never had the opportunity to travel abroad until she came to U of O. After going on two study abroad trips as a student, the preveterinarian major and 2019 graduate decided to apply to several veterinarian schools abroad. She is currently enrolled at the prestigious University of Edinburgh in Scotland, considered one of the top veterinarian schools in the world.

“Thanks to Ozarks, I discovered that I just loved integrating myself into another culture. Combining my love for veterinarian medicine with a love for learning new cultures made my decision to study abroad an easy one. ”

/// 16

Personal GROWTH

Emilie

Williams

When 2019 graduate Emilie “Weave” Williams of Keller, TX, a religion and philosophy major, began applying to graduate schools, she was encouraged to “think big” by her professors. That led her to being accepted by some of the top graduate school programs in the country, including Yale and Harvard. She is currently enrolled in Harvard Divinity School’s Master of Theological Studies program.

“When my professor told me I should consider Yale and Harvard for graduate school, I laughed at him. But he seriously thought I could get in. That’s the great thing about the professors at Ozarks, they believe in you even when you doubt yourself.” 17 ///

Dr. Warren

Teaching EXCELLENCE

Sconiers Dr. Warren Sconiers, assistant professor of biology, regularly takes students to academic conferences to share their research and help them hone their skills and enhance their knowledge and confidence. During the summer of 2019, he and junior biology major Isaac Julio (inset photo) attended the Ecological Society of America’s annual summer conference in Louisville, KY., where they both presented their research.

“Academic conferences like these benefit students greatly by allowing them to share and present their research in front of hundreds of ecologists. The networking opportunities for careers and graduate schools are almost endless.”

WHY WE SUPPORT OZARKS “When we think of University of the Ozarks, the ’O’ reminds us of a continuous circle. There were many who had a dream and worked to fulfill it in 1834. In the 1950s, the circle continued for many, including Janice’s parents, Jim and Joyce Graf Forkner, and her uncle and aunt, Ed and Jan Graf Harrington. Years later, the two of us received our education at Ozarks. We’re glad the tradition of fulfilling the dream is part of our giving, as well as a future education for those who follow.” MICHAEL ’77 AND JANICE (FORKNER) ’78 ZOLLER Bentonville, Arkansas

WHY I SUPPORT OZARKS “Playing college sports at University of the Ozarks helped me learn and understand the importance of setting goals and then working hard to achieve those goals. I also learned the value of teamwork and that the team’s success was more important than my own personal success. I want University of the Ozarks student-athletes and graduates to have these same values. This is why I am a proud supporter of the Aerie Club.” CALLIE JO HARMON DANIELS ’89 Foristell, Missouri Purple & Gold ($25 - $99) Judy Abernathy Helen Addison John Agee Ismael Aguirre Rivera Vivian Aitken Tim and Lori Allen Katie Allen Cynthia Allgood James and Amy Andrews Beverly Austin Richard and Loretta Babeu Bryan Barnett Carol Baugh Anita Beasley Gary and Natalie Beck Tracy Beckman Jason Benson Mona Benson Sue Bittler Hassel and Sue Bivens Bill Black Beverly Block Pete Boaz Melba Bogan Patti Bohannan Tyson and Madelina Bowling Brad Boyle
