Lianne Laing

President, University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation As we mark the 50th anniversary of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, we do so with pride, reflection, and renewed purpose. For five decades, the Institute has led the way in cardiovascular care—driven by innovation, compassion, and a community of supporters who believe deeply in what’s possible. This year, we launched One Million Canadian Hearts—an ambitious effort to transform the prevention, detection, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. It reflects a bold belief, that together, we can change heart health outcomes for Canadians at scale. We also advanced life-saving care through innovations like the Heart Valve Mobile Screening Program and our Acute Care Triage Unit, helping to ease pressure on emergency rooms. None of this is possible without donor support. We strengthened our connection to the community through “February Is Heart Month” and initiatives like Light the Capital Red. I still get emotional seeing red cranes and buildings light up the city’s skyline. Signature events, including the Ottawa Pickleball Classic, which expanded to 90,000 square feet and 36 courts, and the sold-out Wilbert Keon Memorial Golf Tournament, continue to bring people together in meaningful and powerful ways. Through Jump In for Women’s Heart Health, we are advancing critical awareness and funding for the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Centre—empowering more Canadians to better understand their risk and take action. Your commitment fuels everything we do—driving innovation, education, and world-class care. It is such a privilege to share our success with you and look ahead with confidence and determination. We have done this together. With sincere gratitude, thank you for making an extraordinary difference.

Dr. Rob Beanlands

President & CEO, University of Ottawa Heart Institute Almost two million. This is the current number of people that your Ottawa Heart Institute now reaches and serves with specialized cardiac services. To me, it is an illustration of great momentum and success but also of an emergent need across the country. This spring, the Institute celebrated 50 years of providing globally renowned patient-centred cardiac care, cutting-edge interventions, life-saving treatments, and state-of-the-art surgical techniques. I have had the privilege of caring for patients at the Institute since 1992 and one thing that has stayed the same, but also grown in scope, is the culture of kindness and care. Everyone that works here seems to know that they are part of something bigger than themselves. By sharing the common goal of trying to help our patients, we can encourage each other to give the very best of what we have. There is much more to do and now we have fresh opportunities to do things differently. Our new strategic plan, Your Heart. Your Institute. Our Future—Together., shaped by the insights and experiences of more than 2,300 individuals (including patients and community

members), includes the transformative initiative One Million Canadian Hearts. With the goal of screening one million Canadians for cardiovascular risk factors, and grounded in equity and inclusion, this collaborative project illustrates the possibilities of prevention at scale. Because when we screen early, and intervene swiftly, we save lives and improve quality of life. For many of us, our families are the most important thing. Together with the community, the Heart Institute is also a family that loves, cherishes and does our best to care for each other. With continued community support we will be able to prioritize the urgent need to transform care through prevention, outreach, research and innovation.

COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT 2025-26 | UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA HEART INSTITUTE FOUNDATION

Message from Foundation Board Chair, James Annis

I began volunteering with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation in 2019, unaware of where that decision would ultimately lead. I have now completed my second year as Chair and feel privileged to work alongside such a dedicated group of Board members and Foundation team members. The top-tier work being done on every level is both inspiring and motivating. I have had the opportunity to meet donors, volunteers, and patients, and to hear their stories—stories that speak powerfully to the Heart Institute’s impact across our community. Our fundraising events further reflect the deep commitment and generosity of those who support this extraordinary institution.

This past year was especially formative for me through my involvement in developing the Heart Institute’s new five-year Strategic Plan, alongside the Foundation’s five-year Strategic Action Plan. The process was eye-opening. Leaders and voices from across the organization—nursing, cardiology, research, patients, donors, and staff—came together around a shared vision for the future. Bringing these plans to life revealed how interconnected the Heart Institute is with the community, and the essential role of the Foundation as a conduit of support. It underscored the unique culture that defines the Heart Institute—a culture rooted in patient-centred care, where world-renowned expertise directly contributes to life-saving outcomes. The Heart Institute is an extraordinary place—a Canadian jewel in our own backyard. The Foundation is an integral component of that preeminence. I am proud to be part of this organization and grateful to everyone who supports its mission. Thank you to all who continue to make our Heart Institute the centre of excellence that it is today.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

GRAIN FARMERS OF ONTARIO - DISTRICT 13

Grain Farmers of Ontario District 13 (right) celebrating a donation of $20,000 towards the new MRI. “The Ottawa Heart Institute helped save my husband’s life in 2020. Farmers over the age of 45 years are at an increased risk of being diagnosed with heart disease compared to non-farmers in the same demographic—which means that access to diagnostic imaging and cardiac care may be more important for farmers than the general public. The Grain Farmers of Ontario Community Investment Fund was a great opportunity for us to support not only our farmers but our community as a whole so that more families can receive quality care when it’s most needed.” Jennifer Doelman
