DIRECTOR'S NOTE "To be asleep with eyes wide open…

Standing, speaking, moving, and yet so fast asleep.”

A brief scroll on social media or a quick glimpse at the news is all it takes to know that we are in the midst of a world-wide tempest. My heavy heart craves the balm of theatre — not just to partake in making it, but to settle into the reprieve of sitting elbow-to-elbow with my neighbor in a dark theatre; to sync my breath and my heart beat with them in the embrace of all of my senses at once, as I receive a story that soothes, teaches, reminds, or inspires me to see, feel, believe, or live in a better way than when I arrived. A few hours in the theatre helps me to feel less alone in my own personal tempests, and I believe that right now we could all use a bit more of this particular medicine.

Among the many reasons I love Shakespeare is his particular way of offering a vehicle for such an experience through enduring themes like love, fear, vengeance, freedom, legacy, and forgiveness…cue Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and this production. Our lens is the Italian Renaissance: long ago enough that we might believe in the existence of magic, and anchored in history so that we might find the links between our characters’ journeys and our own.

This is a story of forgiveness. Prospera orchestrates a grand storm to restore herself to power and control. In the process, however, she awakens to a gentler way forward. One that shakes all of our characters awake from the belief that revenge or control might ever be the remedy for betrayal and grief, or the foil to feeling pain. Prospera’s storm clears a path for the emergence of her own capacity to love and forgive that may ripple through the next generation and beyond.

Such human capacity for love and change is what I think Shakespeare meant when he wrote that, “we are such stuff as dreams are made on.” My parting dream for our production is that this forgiveness story might provide a salve for whatever tempests exist for you.

DRAMATURG'S NOTE “Be not afeard. The isle is full of noises, Sounds and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not.”

- Caliban We begin our story with a storm. A shipwreck. A bloody business. Our island exists in a space of in-between: perhaps the Caribbean, perhaps the Mediterranean, and most certainly a place of magic. Home to wizards, spirits, humans, and monsters, this island brews great opportunity and grave danger.

On the previous page is a map of the relationships between our cast of characters. But beware: things on this island are not always as they first appear. Spirits can be human.

Servants can be masters. And everyone is at the mercy of the island’s magic.

The Tempest is a story that interweaves magic, religion, and science as coexisting forces pushing the action forward. Around 1610, when Shakespeare was writing The Tempest, this intersection was in line with common beliefs of the time. Most people, including the royal and well-educated, believed in the supernatural while also practicing religion and exploring science.

The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s few plays that seems to be an original story, rather than an adaptation of an existing plot. Shakespeare’s inspiration for The Tempest appears to draw from a number of texts including Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Virgil’s Aeneid, and Erasmus’s Colloquia. It is likely that the opening storm was inspired by an actual shipwreck that would have been recent in Shakespeare’s mind. In 1609, an English ship called the Sea Venture was caught in a hurricane on their way to Virginia and stranded on Bermuda. After spending a winter living off the resources on the island, the crew made it to Jamestown in May 1610.

This story became well-known throughout England and detailed written accounts of the storm likely fueled Shakespeare’s imagination for The Tempest’s opening scene.

Perhaps the most influential inspiration for The Tempestwas Shakespeare’s own life experiences. Considered his final play as the sole playwright, Shakespeare uses the character of Prospera to illuminate his ideas on power, revenge, forgiveness, parenthood, and aging. Shakespeare plays.

MICHAELA BLADES (MARINERS) is a sophomore in the ATP. This is her first show at the U and she is so excited to be a part of it. She would like to thank her teachers, friends, and family for their enduring support.

CADE FREIERMUTH (STEPHANO) Cade was born and raised in Kansas City, where he first began performing in school productions . Recent credits include As You Like It (UofU), Moon Beach (Kid Sister/Good Co.), Hamlet (Parker Theatre). Upcoming projects include a production of The Baltimore Waltz, as part of a collaboration between the theatre and architecture departments. Cade is a junior in the ATP and loves every second of it.

Recipient of the CFA Academic Excellence award.

ALY CARTER (SHIPMASTER) is an upcoming senior in the Actor Training Program.

Most recently she has been seen as Nancy (u/s Anna) in the university production of The Sweet Science of Bruising. They have also been seen in KID SISTER Theatre Collaborative’s devised productions entitled Kite Flyer, and Everything is About Something. Aly is passionate about making theatre and growing as an artist and actor, and she would like to thank those around her for their warmth and support in her endeavors.

CARO CIET (TRINCULO ) is a senior in the ATP. Their previous Studio 115 credits include playing as Jacques in As You Like It and Elizabeth Bennet in You on the Moors Now. They have also worked with Salt Lake Acting Company in the NPSS reading of Let Down Your Hair. They are a proud recipient of the Utah Academic Scholarship and Departmental Scholarships.

HANNAH EKSTROM (SEBASTIAN) is a Senior in the ATP. Her acting credits include Anna Lamb in The Sweet Science of Bruising (U of U Babcock Theatre), Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Viola in Twelfth Night, and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth (Logan Youth Shakespeare); and Stephanie Dumotel in the new play The Duel (Stanford University).

In 2017 Hannah completed a Shakespeare course at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She has also co-directed and coached children in productions of

ZACHARY HARVEY (Nymph | Water) is a Junior in the Actor Training Program. He has been passionate about acting since he was a seventh grader at Union Middle School. He continued acting all through high school. He was fortunate to have gone to Hillcrest High School, which has one of the best theatre departments in the state. He is now at the University of Utah in the Actor Training Program, and is excited to continue his education and for what the future has in store.

KIRSTEN HENRIQUEZ (PROSPERA) completed her bachelors in Psychology last spring and is currently in her last year of the Actors Training Program. Recent roles include Cassandra in the University of Utah's Production of Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days (Studio 115). Kirsten also has a deep interest in film and has been part of multiple shorts throughout her college experience. Roles include Lilith in Enactment (2023) by Bridger Roberts, and Waleska in The Dropoff (2021) by Christian Lopez.

She would like to thank her family, friends and professors for their constant support.

DEBORA INGABILE (ALONSO) - is currently a senior in the Actor Training Program as well as a minor in Business. She transferred from the STEM department as a Kinesiology major to the arts 2 years ago and since then she has been in productions, such as, Somewhere: A Primer For The End Of Days (as Puppeteer and U/S Diana) and As You Like It (as Phoebe). Her primary interest is film and writing. She has been in a few productions throughout her college years, such as Pretty Girl (as Pretty Girl), Joyous (as Anika), I Want To Be Closer (as Dina) and many other short projects. She is looking forward to expanding her talents with the encouragement of her professors, mentors and family support!

TESSA SELAH JONES ( Juno | Fire) s is from Los Angeles, California and is currently a sophomore in the University of Utah’s Actor Training Program. Recent roles include Violet Hunter Understudy for The Sweet Science of Bruising (The Babcock), Pem in Farnsworth Invention by Aron Sorkin (Caroline’s Loft Theatre), Marshall in 7 Stories by Morris Panych (Cinder Block Theatre Company), and Elsie in After the Fall

by Arthur Miller (LACHSA prod). She is super excited to be a part of this production and has had a wonderful time working with all of the other cast and crew.

TRUE LEAVITT (CALIBAN) is a Junior in the Actor Training Program and is originally from Twin Falls, Idaho. Since moving to Salt Lake City, True has performed in Salt Lake Acting Company’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (u/s: Brigh Bird/Mike Lee the Trash Person), Parker Theater’s Winnie the Pooh (Eeyore/Kanga), U of U’s The Sweet Science of Bruising (Professor u/s), and in U

of U’s Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days (u/s: Corin/Alexander). True is a proud recipient of the Robin Hyde Wilson Talent Scholarship for Acting and the Libby Hunter Theatre Scholarship.

ISACC MARTINEZ-TRINIDAD (FERDINAND) is currently a junior in the ATP. He was born and raised around the Salt Lake Valley and is proud to be of LatinX descent. Isacc’s previous Studio 115 acknowledgments include Somewhere: A Primer For The End Of Days (Alexander) and As You Like It (Adam/US Orlando). He is thankful for an opportunity to perform in the Babcock Theatre and would also like to thank his parents for their continual support.

LAUREL MORGAN (ARIEL) Laurel Morgan is currently a Junior in the Actors Training Program. She has recently been seen on the Babcock stage as Bartley in Old Man and the Old Moon as well as serving as the Dramaturg for The Sweet Science of Bruising. She also performs in theatrical productions all around the Salt Lake Valley, most recently as Suburu Sorenson U/S in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Salt Lake Acting Company), Tigger and Owl in Winnie the Pooh (Parker Theatre), and Ursula in Much Ado About Nothing (Parker Theatre).

She would like to extend her gratitude to her professors and mentors for their continued investment in her growth as a theatre artist. Laurel is a proud recipient of the Lady Bracknell Scholarship.

TYLER VAN OOSTENDORP (Iris | Wind) is a Senior in the ATP. He's been seen in Matilda Jr. with the Youth Theatre, as Silvius in the University of Utah's 2023 production of As You Like It, and as a collaborator in KID SISTER’s shows Everything is About Something and Kite Flyer, which was recently presented at the Salt Lake Fringe

JORDAN PALMER (BOATSWAIN) Jordan is thrilled to be in this year's production of The Tempest. Jordan is currently a senior enrolled in the Actor Training Program at the U. Last year he performed in the U’s production of The Old Man and the Old Moon (Captain). His other recent acting credits include SLCC’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (Ed), and The Great Plan of Happiness (Heber) at Wasatch Theatre Company. Outside of theatre productions, Jordan also enjoys collaborating on film projects and doing voice over work.

AUDREY PAN (Ceres | Earth) is a junior in the Actor Training Program and a double major in Political Science. Audrey’s first U of U production role included The Narrator in You on the Moors Now (Studio 115). Prior to attending the U, Audrey graduated from Summit Academy High School. She would like to thank everyone for supporting her journey, especially her family and Julie Fox for their constant support in her college career. Flagship Scholarship recipient, a J.D. Williams Scholarship recipient, and a Regent Scholarship Recipient.

NATALIE RUTHVEN (MIRANDA): Natalie is thrilled to be a part of here first Shakespeare play here at the U! They are now a Senior in the Musical Theatre Program and absolutely ecstatic to be in not only The Tempest, but Into The Woods (Narrator), and The Great Comet of 1812 at Pioneer. Their most recent productions have been playing Susie Bones/ Myrtle in Puffs at West Valley Performing Arts, and Dice at Lagoon where she was on

a walking-ball while flipping knives. They want to thank her family and friends for all of the support they have given along with enduring all of the silly puns she relentlessly tells. Enjoy!

EMILY TATUM (GONZALO) is currently a Junior in the Actor Training Program and is from the Bay Area, California. Since moving to Salt Lake City, she has appeared in As You Like It (Audrey/Rosalind U/S) Life of Galileo (Signora Sarti/Barberini), and How Flowers Bloom (Amy) with Utah Arts Alliance. Other credits include Big Fish ( Josephine Bloom/ Choreographer) and Pride and Prejudice (Mrs. Bennet). She would like to thank her family for their loving support and hopes that you enjoy the show! HARRISON TIMM (MARINERS) is a sophomore in the ATP. Originally from Moorhead, Minnesota, Harrison is ecstatic to be studying acting here at the U. During his time here, Harrison has performed in Suessical (Horton The Elephant) and participated in a staged reading of Sympathizer (Ty Carroll). Prior to his tenure at the University of Utah, Harrison has performed in musicals such as Bonnie & Clyde (Clyde Barrow), Newsies (Romeo), Legally Blonde (Aaron Schultz/ Nikos Argitakos), and Dogfight (Stevens).

In the category of Dramatic Interpretation, Harrison is a nationally ranked competitor in the National Speech & Debate Association.

AKINA YAMAZAKI (ANTONIO) is a junior in the Actor Training Program and a 2021 recipient of the Kaiserslautern Military Onstage theatre scholarship. Her most recent performances include Sympathizer (Mandy), an original production written by

Smith at The Alliance Theatre. Akina’s turn as Hero in Much Ado About Nothing earned a nomination for “Best Youth Actress in a Play” at the TOPPERs (US Army IMCOM-Europe Entertainment Tournament of Plays).

CREATIVE TEAM MELINDA PFUNDSTEIN (Director) is excited to join the University of Utah Theatre Department for this production of The Tempest. Select directing credits include: All’s Well That Ends Well, The Book of Will; The Merchant of Venice, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, where she has been a member of the directing and acting company for 25 years. Other favorite directing credits include Every Brilliant Thing, Lake Dillon Theatre Company; Urinetown, The Spitfire Grill, RENT, Dancing at Lughnasa. She holds a Masters in Arts Administration from Southern Utah University. She also serves as a creative strategist and executive coach, speaker, and facilitator. Melinda holds that her most important role is that of Mama Bird to her three daughters.

KIRA BAILEY (Production Assistant) is a sophomore in the Film & Media Arts Program (Film Production Emphasis) at the University of Utah, while also pursuing her Stage Management Certificate with SMU. Last year, Kira got the opportunity to be a part of The Prom (Dresser) at PTC

and Seussical (Deck Crew) with YTU. She is beyond excited to be a part of her first Department of Theatre show. Kira would like to thank her family and friends for their endless support!

SPENCER BARBER (Assistant Stage Manager) Spencer is a Junior in the Stage Management program at the University of Utah. Most recently, Spencer was the Assistant Property Designer for Cabaret.

Previously they worked on As You Like It (Assistant Production Manager), Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days (Assistant Stage Manager), and Illyria (Production Assistant) at the U. They would like to thank their family for all their support.

CAMDEN BARRETT (Assistant Director) is a student in the Actor Training Program and the Modern Dance Department. Most recent credits include: Radiant Vermin (University of Utah/Director), Queer the Stage: The Golden Age (Good Company Theatre/ Performer), and As You Like It (Studio 115/ Rosalind). Additionally, they have worked pre-professionally as an assistant director and intimacy coordinator for Salt Lake Acting Company and The Grand Theatre.

Past assistant directing credits include Can I Say Yes to That Dress (SLAC), The 39 Steps (The Grand Theatre), A Year With Frog and Toad (SLAC), The Old Man and the Old Moon (Babcock), Matilda Jr. (Youth Theatre at the U), and Storm Still (Babcock). Camden is the co-founder and co-artistic director of KID SISTER Theatre Collaborative, a non-profit organization based in Salt Lake City. JAYDEN DUDLEY (Makeup and Hair Designer): Jayden is a senior in the Stage Management program, planning to graduate in spring 2024! Although Jayden has done special effects makeup for 6 years, this is her first show as an HMU Designer and she is excited to show you her work. Jayden has loved working with the Department of Theatre on shows including Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days (SM, Studio 115), New Work Project: LIMINAL (1st ASM, Studio 115), and Naked Mole Rats Get Dressed (ASM, Babcock). Some outside work also includes La Boheme (Utah ASM Utah Opera, Capital Theatre), (R)evolution of Steve Jobs (Intern at Utah Opera, Capital Theatre). Jayden has also worked as a dresser for Pioneer Theatre on their 2021-22 and 2022-23 season for, Hello Dolly, Something Rotten, Elf the Musical, Shucked, A Christmas Story Musical, and Putting It Together. She would like to thank everyone for supporting her so far throughout this journey in theatre.

SAVANNAH GERSDORF (Stage Manager) is a senior in the Stage Management Program.

She has enjoyed working on shows at the University including The Sweet Science of Bruising (SM), The Old Man and the Old Moon (APM), Matilda Jr. the Musical (SM), and Storm Still (ASM). She’s worked with Pioneer Theatre Company as a dresser for Hello Dolly, Shucked, and A Christmas Story - The Musical, Putting it Together, and looks forward to an internship with Utah Opera this winter! She would like to thank her family and friends for supporting her, and give a huge thank you to her stage management team for all of their incredible hard work and dedication.

ADRIANA LEMKE (Fight Director) is a SLC-based theatre-artist and movement

professional. An alum of the ATP, she’s happy to be working with the Department of Theatre and their fantastic students again. Previous U Theatre productions include As You Like It (Studio 115), The Sweet Science of Bruising and The Old Man and the Old Moon (Babcock), Hamlet: All Female (in collaboration with Flying Bobcat Productions), Self Defense, or the death of some salesmen (Studio 115), and Julius Caesar (Studio 115). Other fight direction credits include At the Bottom (Pinnacle Acting Company), The Wolves (SLAC), Ion (The Classical Greek Theatre Festival), Twelfth Night (Salt Lake Shakespeare) Julius Caesar (UofU), Hamlet (Sun Valley Shakespeare). Most recently, she was intimacy director for Sleeping Giant (SLAC), Head Over Heels (The Grand Theatre) and Man and the Moon (Good Company Theatre).

IREY OVIATT (Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore at the University of Utah and is excited to be back for their second season at the U. Some recent work of theirs includes stage managing Hairspray (Draper Arts Council) and Singing in The Rain (Draper Arts Council) as the Stage Manager. She has also worked on Cabaret (University of Utah) as the PA. Irey would like to thank her high school instructors, Linze Struiksma and Lindsay Cline, for their continuous support of her theatre journey.

ARIKA SCHOCKMEL (Prop Designer) has worked extensively in props and costume crafts for theatre, television, and film. She is the Prop Manager for the Department of Theatre and works as a prop and costume designer for Plan B Theatre. Regional credits include productions at The Egyptian Theatre, UFOCMT, Grand Teton, Dark Horse, SLAC, Utah Contemporary, Lyric Rep. USU Alum. Member of S.P.M., the Society of Prop Managers. Other projects include

COMPANY & CREATIVE TEAM stage management, music, event hosting/ emceeing, props for film and television, and the occasional acting gig.

SARAH SHIPPOBOTHAM (Intimacy Director) is a full professor and cohead of the Actor Training Program for the Department of Theatre. She has trained with both Intimacy Directors and Choreographers and Theatrical Intimacy Education, and she has provided Intimacy Direction for several shows at the U and at Salt Lake Acting Company. Sarah has also spent 18 seasons as a Voice and Dialect Coach for the internationally renowned Shaw Festival in Ontario, Canada; worked as the Additional Dialect Coach on The Hobbit Trilogy in New Zealand directed by Sir Peter Jackson; and has worked locally as a voice and dialect coach for Pioneer Theatre Company and Salt Lake Acting Company.

As an actor, she has appeared in plays at PTC, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Salt Lake Acting Company, including the recent world premiere of her solo show Can I Say Yes to That Dress? (SLAC). Sarah has directed many shows for the department including Men on Boats, Our Country’s Good, and Romeo and Juliet; next spring, she will direct U Theatre’s production of Dancing at Lughnasa in Studio 115. 2021 recipient of the Calvin S. and JeNeal N. Hatch Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

JULIA WITESMAN (Assistant Production Manager) Julia is thrilled to be working on The Tempest! She is a junior in the Stage Management program and is excited for the year ahead. She is the Assistant Production Manager for all three of the Fall Department of Theatre productions including The Lightning Thief, Town Hall, and The Tempest. Julia has been stage managing for the past six years and loves every minute of it. Recent productions at

the U include: Cabaret (1st. Assistant Stage Manager), In Pieces (Assistant Production Manager), and The Thanksgiving Play (Stage Manager). She hopes you enjoy the show!

Julia is a proud recipient of the Christine Macken Memorial Scholarship.

CHRIS DUVAL (Producer) is a Professor for the Department of Theatre and was recently appointed as Interim Chair.

Previously, Chris served as an Assistant Professor and the Head of BFA/MFA Performance at the University of Idaho, where he directed and taught courses in acting, voice, and movement. He has acted, directed and fight directed throughout the country including at Shakespeare theatres in Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Orange County, as well as world premieres, contemporary plays, and classics at such theaters as the Denver Theater Center, Dallas Theatre Center, South Coast Repertory and many others. He has also worked as a teacher, actor, and fight director at universities, training programs, and regional theaters across the country.

Chris is a Certified Teacher / Certified Fight Director / Theatrical Firearms Instructor with the Society of American Fight Directors, a Master Instructor / Senior Fight Director of Theatrical Combat with Dueling Arts International, an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voice Work, holds a 2nd degree black belt in Aikido, and is a member of AEA. He is the author of “Stage Combat Arts: an Integrated Approach to Acting, Voice and Text Work + Video,” published by Bloomsbury Methuen in 2016. He received a B.A. in Theatre Arts from California State University, Fullerton and an M.F.A. in Acting from the University of California, Irvine.
