for the final production of the Department of Theatre’s “Distanced but Not Distant” Season. In true 2020/2021 fashion, this is not the destination we planned for, but we are very grateful to be here.

When we originally selected our shows—a lifetime ago, seemingly—we did so expecting to present them live and in-person in the Babcock Theatre and Studio 115.

When circumstances changed, so did our priorities, and we changed our season to meet them. When we were held to account for our priorities—for how far they had fallen short of what our students deserve, and for how much more we could and should have done—we committed to changes that will affect every season to come.

Our season opened on October 23rd with our first fully virtual production: The Night Witches by Rachel Bublitz. This potent, lyrical, live-streamed production told the story of one evening at the height of World War II for the legendary all-female 588th Night Bomber Regiment. We returned to the virtual stage with a new take on William Shakespeare’s Henry V. Adapted for the virtual stage by the cast and the director, returning guest artist Stephanie Weeks, our production of Henry V waged war on new questions of identity, authority, history, and privilege, as the former prankster “Hal” decides how to bear the uneasy burden of the crown. Then, in Spring of 2021, we made the difficult decision to cancel our production of Songs for a New World, by Jason Robert Brown. Although the choice was ours to make, the repercussions were borne primarily by students, faculty, and staff who had invested their time, gifts, and passion during a year where such opportunities were already scarce. It was a moment of reckoning we will not forget; it was an inflection point on which—we hope—our future truly turned.

In a year where so much was lost, every victory is precious. We are thrilled to end our season by bringing back our long-postponed production of Tartuffe, restaged for safety and pre-recorded for audiences around the world to enjoy at their convenience. With actors sharing the same space for the first time in over a year, this production represents a small but crucial step toward reclaiming an essential aspect of theatre. Our separation has confirmed the truth we have long known: what matters is connection—the company we keep, and the care we take of one another.

As we have navigated this smaller, safer season, our excitement about new genres and technology has been surpassed by our resolve. As our coronavirus response enters a new chapter, we are still reckoning with the global pandemic of racial discrimination and systemic inequality. We began this season in the night sky, on a different path, and far from where we have landed. If we are somewhat the worse for wear, we wear it gladly. We have learned so much, both from the journey and from our traveling companions. Thank you, now and always, for the gift of your company.

“We Do Not Mind Being Wicked, but No One Likes Being Ridiculed.”

Tartuffe, initially titled The Imposter, is about a man who puts on a flashy display of piety, but is corrupt, manipulative, and immoral.

When the play was first written, it sparked immediate outrage from Catholic Church officials. When seen today, it’s easy to think that Tartuffe mocks the Catholic Church and religious devotion; and that’s why the play was so controversial. In 1600s France, nearly everyone was Catholic, and the audience would have assumed all the characters in the play were Catholic. The only two immoral characters are Tartuffe and Orgon, the one person who supports Tartuffe. The factor that distinguishes the two sinful characters from the rest is not that they’re Catholic, but that they consistently act against Church teachings.

If Tartuffe wasn’t a mockery of religion, why were Church officials so opposed to it? One objection was that it was inappropriate to discuss religion in a comedic play. Theatre, especially comedy, was viewed as vile and indecent. The general disgust associated with theatre was so great that Molière, whose actual name was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, created a stage name at the beginning of his career to spare his family from embarrassment.

Molière defended comedic plays by saying that although many of them were distasteful, comedy had the potential to be a good tool for moral correction. He described comedy as a mirror that could show the audience their own flaws and prompt them to change. He said in his 1669 preface to Tartuffe, “We do not mind being wicked, but no one likes being ridiculed.”

The other main objection to the play was aimed at Orgon, Tartuffe’s only follower. Most of Orgon’s traits were encouraged by the Church. He is modest, devoted, and reverent. Orgon uses Bible verses to justify his admiration for Tartuffe. Catholic officials in France worried that the audience would fail to realize Orgon takes scripture out of context, and that the audience would believe that his and Tartuffe’s actions were acceptable or even holy.

Molière and a few advocates addressed the objections. King Louis XIV wrote that Tartuffe’s actions are so evil, and some of the other characters’ so virtuous, that it’s easy to distinguish Tartuffe as the villain and to know to avoid his behavior. An anonymous advocate wrote that the other characters’ logical arguments against Tartuffe make it clear that Orgon’s admiration for him is ridiculous. His blindness to Tartuffe’s obvious corruption is so foolish that the audience would never consider Orgon’s arguments rational or advocated by the church.

It’s tempting to associate villainous characters with other people who share their traits.

But Molière hoped to help us see flaws in ourselves—flaws we actually have the power to correct. As we watch Tartuffe, let’s consider the similarities we share with the characters, including the negative ones.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY CAST OLIVIA BUCK (Mariane) is a senior in the MTP. While at the U of U, she has performed as Ensemble in Big Love (Babcock), Muse/Ensemble in The Odyssey (Babcock), and Kristine/ Val in A Chorus Line Workshop. Olivia thanks her teachers, friends, and fiancé for their unending support.

ETHAN HERNANDEZ (Damis) Is a Junior in the ATP. This will be his second show at the U of U, last appearing as Zeus in The Odyssey (Babcock). He thanks his Mother Linda, Brianna, and his teachers for their continued support and encouragement over the last year.

CONNOR NELIS JOHNSON (Tartuffe) is a senior in the ATP. He was last seen as Henry V in the U of U’s virtual production of Henry V, along with eight other Henry Vs. LIAM G. JOHNSON (Officer) is a senior in the ATP and was last seen in the U’s production of Henry V. Other credits include David in The Rivals (Babcock Theatre) and Buddy Layman in The Diviners (The REP). He thanks his parents and professors for their unending support and guidance over these past four years. Liam is a proud member of the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle in Hollywood

and Marian D. Harrison Scholarship recipient.

TRISTIAN OSBORNE (Valère) is currently taking a gap year in his pursuit of an ATP degree, and is overjoyed to return to the role of Valère. Previous credits include Satin in The Lower Depths, Captain Stanhope in Journey’s End, Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey, and Jeffrey Meredith in The Curious Savage. He lovingly thanks everyone who contributed to making this show possible, as well as his family and friends for their support.

ALEXIS PULLEN (Flipote) is a junior in the ATP and is also majoring in Film & Media Arts. Origionally from Houston, Texas she wants to thank her friends and family for their never-ending support. Previous roles include Polina in The Night Witches (Zoom) and Person #1 in It Doesnt Rain Enough

by Jillian DiNucci. She is thrilled to be doing her first in-person production at the U! LAURA RIZZO (Laurent) is from Portland, OR and is a senior in the MTP. Previous roles include Maggie in the A Chorus Line Workshop and ensemble in Chess (MCD). Upon graduation in May, she will be relocating to New York to start a graduate degree. Laura thanks her family for their continued love and support through all of her endeavors.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY TOM ROCHE (Orgon) is a senior in the ATP and is thrilled to be a part of this new form of theatre! Past credits include The Soothsayer in Julius Caesar (Studio 115), Lucius O’Trigger in The Rivals (Babcock), and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (UCT). Tom thanks his friends, family, and professors for their continued support.

MARCELLO SAY (Monsieur Loyal) is a Junior in the ATP. He is very excited to take on the role (for a second time) of Monsiuer Loyal! He would like to thank his family, friends, and Maple for their continued support.

EMILY SMILEY (Mme Pernelle) is a senior in the ATP. They hold the rank of Actor-Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and are a recipient of the Robert Hyde Wilson Talent Scholarship for Acting and the Marian D. Harrison Scholarship.

Past credits include Konstantin in The Seagull, Cinna/Messala in Julius Caesar (Studio 115), Doctor/Murderer in Macbeth (Studio 115), and Thomas in Jesus Christ Superstar. They are also a working musician, and have recently released an album, “Dear Listener.”

ALI JO STROUD (Dorine) Is a Senior in the ATP. Previous credits include #46 in The Wolves (SLAC), Ross in Macbeth (Studio 115) and Mary in It Doesn’t Rain Enough (U of U Student Production). Ali Jo loves collecting crystals, singing while playing the piano, traveling/exploring, and

analyzing your astrology chart. She is so excited to revamp lil miss sassy maid and would love to thank all ze amazing humans who help her grow & learn something every day! @alisonjostroud MAXIMO VILLA (Cléante) is a junior in the ATP. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Max has lived in Salt Lake City for the past 3 years. In addition to the role of Cleante in Tartuffe, Max has acted in several short film projects with other classmates in the Department of Theatre. His primary interests center on voice and movement work as well as screen acting.

SHELICE WARR (Elmire) is honored to be in her sixth production with the U. She is a senior in the ATP. She was previously seen as Fluellen in Henry V (Zoom), Alexandra in The Night Witches (Zoom), and Decius Brutus in Julius Caesar (Studio 115). She wants to thank all of her professors for their constant support and the amount of time they dedicate into making her not only a better actor, but a better human. She’d also like to thank her family for their constant love and encouragement. Proud recipient of the Utahna B Meilstrup scholarship.

CREATIVE TEAM EMILY BEATSE (Stage Manager) is a senior at the U, earning a BFA in Stage Management. She is very excited to be returning as the Stage Manager for Tartuffe and to see this

Professional credits include: 2nd ASM for Mary Stuart, Lifespan of a Fact, and The Lion in Winter (Pioneer Theatre). She is currently the Vice President and Recruitment Chair for the University’s Stage Managers at the U club and the Studio Manager for SAC. She is on the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion ( JEDI) committee and on the KCACTF Student Advisory Board. She is the proud recipient of the Fine Arts Advisory Board Scholarship and the Utahna B. Meilstrup scholarship.

SYDNEY CHEEK-O’DONNELL (Producer) is the Interim Chair of the Department of Theatre and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. Her long-time commitment to political theatre, social justice, and feminism have informed every aspect of her work, fostering a deep interest in the impact of the arts on social and emotional well-being.

Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell’s application of theatre to unlikely fields, has led to a wide range of projects and collaborations in both clinical and educational settings. This affinity

for uniting unexpected collaborators extends to her work in the College of Fine Arts; as Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell helps faculty members communicate the significance of arts research to colleagues and funding sources in other disciplines. In the Department of Theatre, Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell has taught History of Theatre, New Plays Workshop, Dramaturgy, and a variety of dramatic literature courses, and headed Theatre Studies from 2005 to 2016. Current projects include working with an interdisciplinary team to create a video series intended to support families of children with Down Syndrome, as well as writing a handbook called Arts for Health: Theatre (Emerald Publishing). Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell earned a PhD in Theatre History and Dramatic Criticism from the University of Washington’s School of Drama, and received her undergraduate degree from Carleton College in Minnesota.

KENNY COSSON (Production Assistant) is a freshman in the BFA Stage Management program at the U. They worked on four shows as a student at Dixie High, managing two (Pippin, The Odyessy) and worked on set for the others (Starlight Express, Game of Tiaras). They were brought into theatre by their drama teacher and a few friends. They found a welcoming place and never left it.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY KATHRYN EDWARDS (Assistant Costume Designer) is in her third year at the U and is currently a sophomore in the PADP with an emphasis in costume design. Recent work includes Henry V (Zoom) as costume designer.

She would like to thank her family and professors for their guidance and support.

STACEY HASLAM (Costume Designer) After graduating a year ago with a BFA in the PADP at the U, Stacey is thrilled to be able to see this show through to the end. She worked as an Assistant Designer on Dracula, The Musical here at the U and has designed shows in the Layton area for On Pitch Performing Arts. Design credits include Les Miserables, The Addams Family, Frozen Jr. and Much Ado About Nothing.

RACHAEL HARNED (Scenic Designer) is a senior in the PADP, doublemajoring in Lighting Design and Scenic Design. Lighting design credits include Flying (PYGmalion Theatre Company), She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall), WAIT! (PYGmalion Theatre Company), and Company (Babcock). She has served as the Assistant Lighting Designer for Once on This Island (Pioneer Theatre), Silent Dancer (SLAC), Dialogues of the Carmelites (Kingsbury Hall), and La Cage Aux Folles (Pioneer Theatre), and as the Lighting Designer for multiple local dance companies. She is deeply grateful for each opportunity and for those who have made them possible.

AARON HOENIG (Sound Designer) is a 6th year student double majoring in Theatrical Sound Design and Biology.

Previously he was the sound designer for Dracula (MCD), Company, and Our Country’s Good (Babcock). Aaron was also the sound engineer for Saturday’s Voyeur 2018 and 2019 and Pinkalicious (SLAC) as well as Dogfight (Babcock). Aaron is getting a certificate in stage management and was the assistant stage manager for Floyd Collins (Babcock), Rigoletto, Dialogues des Carmelites, and Die Fledermaus (Kingsbury Hall).

LIZ MEREDITH (2nd Assistant Director) is a senior in the MTP. Previous U credits include ensemble in Chess (MCD) and Assistant Director for Floyd Collins (Babcock). Other credits include Director for Mamma Mia and Director for Elf Jr. (Ragged Edge Theatre). Thanks to her parents and family for their loving support. Enjoy the show!

MAXWELL PARIS (Assistant Production Manager) is a Senior in the Stage Management Program and is absolutely thrilled to be working on this project, having come a long way from his hometown in Wisconsin.

Previously, Max served as Stage Manager for It Doesn’t Rain Enough (Studio 115), as well as Assistant Stage Manager for The Odyssey (Babcock), Men on Boats (Studio 115), and Chess (MCD). He will be returning as the Assistant Stage Manager for Ass at PTC, where he has also worked as a Dresser for the last three seasons.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY KYLARR PULLEN (Assistant Stage Manager) is a Junior in the Stage Management Program. After over a year of waiting, he is happy to be able to return to Tartuffe as the Assistant Stage Manager. Kylarr’s most recent ASM credits for the Department of Theatre include Dracula the Musical (MCD), The Rivals (Babcock), and Songs for a New World (Babcock, canceled). Kylarr was also the Assistant Costume Designer for this season’s The Night Witches (Zoom) and is looking forward to next season, when he will be both Costume Designer and Assistant Production Manager for the season’s first production of Storm Still.

NIKI RAHIMI (Assistant Director) is thrilled to be assistant directing this production of Tartuffe. She is a junior in the MTP and is very grateful to see theatre becoming a part of life again.

Most recently, Niki performed in the U’s production of Macbeth (Studio 115). Niki thanks her family for their endless support, as well as Rob Scott and the cast for all of their hard work.

SARAH SHIPPOBOTHAM (Intimacy Director) is a full professor and cohead of the Actor Training Program for the Department of Theatre. Four years ago Sarah became aware of intimacy training and the need for the work to be present at the U. She has trained with both Intimacy Directors and Choreographers and Theatrical Intimacy Education - the preeminent companies in North America and

she has provided Intimacy Direction for two shows now at the U as well as working on two shows for Salt Lake Acting Company. Sarah has also spent 18 seasons as a Voice and Dialect Coach for the internationally renowned Shaw Festival in Ontario, Canada; worked as the Additional Dialect Coach on The Hobbit Trilogy in New Zealand directed by Sir Peter Jackson; and has worked locally as a voice and dialect coach for Pioneer Theatre Company and Salt Lake Acting Company. Sarah has appeared in plays at PTC, SLAC and the Utah Shakespeare Festival and has directed many shows for the Department of Theatre including Men on Boats, Our Country’s Good, and Romeo and Juliet.

This spring, Sarah became the proud recipient of the Calvin S. and JeNeal N. Hatch Prize for excellence in teaching.

ROBERT SCOTT SMITH (Director) Previous directing credits at the U include Big Love (Babcock) and an all-female production of Hamlet in conjunction with the Department of Theatre. Robert Scott is the Co-Founder and CoArtistic Director of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory, whose projects include The Live Creature & Ethereal Things, created in collaboration with Ririe-Woodbury; the world premiere of Jump; and the world premiere of Climbing with Tigers, produced

The Department of Film & Media Arts presents the Spring Showcase, a public screening of student works from film students at the U. This year, the festival is a hybrid format featuring online screenings and an exciting drive-in on campus at the U. WHERE: Lot 24 on campus, near the McCarthey Track & Field (see map online) WHEN: Saturday, May 8th. Check-in will begin at 8, and the screening will begin at dusk (approximately 8:45pm) HOW: Sound will be transmitted via FM radio signal.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a battery-operated radio so they don't have to use their car radio. There will be space for attending parties to watch the screening on socially-distanced spots on the lawn. rsvp at
