DRAMATURGICAL NOTE “Once Upon A Time” to “Happily Ever After” We’ve all heard it in some form. “In a far away land”, “Long, long, ago”, “There was, and was not”, “In a land of myth and a time of magic”, “In a lilac wood”— They all mean the same thing. Once there was something in this time removed from us, and I am going to tell you about that now. The phrase, in english, is well over 600 years old and was spoken well before it was written down. Phrases of the same spirit in other languages are just as common; here are a few and their translations:

In the days o lang syne “Long ago” in Scots Long ago, in a land much like our own, there lived two artists. One, named Stephen Sondheim, was a composer who could weave notes and melodies together into a beautiful tapestry of sounds and emotion. The other, James Lapine, was a magnificent and powerful storyteller, able to take anyone on a journey of suspense and adventure. In 1986 they wished, wished more than anything, to create a fantastical fairytale musical that everyone could enjoy. Mothers, fathers, sisters, and daughters all could come and experience this magical tale—a story of adventure, with quests, and magic, and giants, but it was also a story about family, about loss, trauma, and about healing. They worked, and worked, and toiled away, until the fateful day of December 4th of 1986, at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California. On that day, in this place, Into the Woods premiered, under the direction of Lapine himself. Audiences were enthralled, and clamored for more, so much so that on November 5th, 1987, not even a year after its original premier, Into the Woods appeared on Broadway. After 765 performances, the original Broadway production closed on September 3rd, 1989. Sondheim & Lapine’s magical musical was nominated for 10 Tony awards, winning 3, and solidified Into the Woods as a timeless musical whose message still resonates to this day. So magical and touching is this musical that it continues to be revived and performed, having a Broadway revival that was performed up until January 8th of this year, 2023. Kobi Baker

Most fairy tales were spoken orally. "Children’s and Household Tales," generally known as Grimm’s Fairy Tales, of the Brothers Grimm, are transcribed directly from oral renderings. The influence of Perrault and the Grimms has been very great, and their versions have been commonly adopted as nursery tales among literate people in the West. For example,"Cinderella" has replaced "Cap o’ Rushes," The exact origins of fairy tales are difficult to pinpoint, as they have roots in various ancient civilizations, including the Sumerians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese. Some of the oldest known fairy tales date back to ancient Egypt, such as "The Tale of the Two Brothers" (circa 3200 BCE), and ancient Greece, like the story of "Cupid and Psyche" from "The Golden Ass" (circa 2nd century CE) by Apuleius. Even Aesop's Fables count as a fable. Aesop was a Greek author from the 6th century BC. A Roman named Phoedrus did one of the earliest translations into Latin around 320 BC. Aesop's fables were among the first fairy tales that became famous in the Western world. During the Middle Ages, oral fairy tales were shared by traveling storytellers who would visit villages and towns to entertain people with their tales. These stories often featured knights, damsels, and magical creatures and served as a form of cultural expression and entertainment.Today, fairy tales continue to be a significant part of popular culture, with numerous adaptations in film, television, theater, and literature. Einu sinni fyrir langa löngu… “Once a long time ago…” in Icelandic In the realm of storytelling, the presence of a narrator inevitably shapes the narrative into their own rendition. Whether recounting personal experiences or retelling another's fiction, when filtered through the narrator it becomes something entirely unique. They may selectively omit, embellish or exaggerate for emphasis, or modulate the pace of the story to convey the desired tone. Transformed through their personal perspective, every element, from characters to settings, events, and moral lessons, is colored anew. In any narrative with a narrator, their role is integral, each word purposefully spoken to guide the audience towards a conclusive destination. As stories evolve and the artform continually is passed down, many types of narrators have emerged, each lending their own special benefits and qualities to the tales they unfold. Some works see the narrator as an actual character within the story, interfacing with the audience perhaps through direct address of events, recollection of memories, and expression of personal thoughts whenever they see fit. In many others, the narrator exists outside the contents of the direct story itself, providing a lens through which the audience can see the story of others and may occasionally supplement it with their personal views. In this form, the narrator may oftentimes be perceived as a shadow of the author. While the narrator is commonly trusted as a truthful figure, “unreliable narrator” may take advantage of this presumption, introducing and recounting events with either intentional or inadvertent inaccuracies. Whatever their form, the presence of a narrator can dramatically impact the story they tell. Adam Jaskuloski

DRAMATURGICAL NOTE, CONTD. ‫הׂשעמ ַא ןעוועג זיא לָאמַא‬ “Once there was a story” in Yiddish I Wish…. What do you wish for? What is that certain thing that will make all your dreams come true? That will solve all your problems and make your life a “happily ever after?” The Oxford Dictionary defines it thusly: wish /wɪʃ/ v. "to feel or express a strong desire or hope for something that is not easily attainable; want something that cannot or probably will not happen.” Not the most optimistic definition. And yet, we believe in wishes, we make wishes, we grant wishes. We blow out the candles on a cake and keep our wishes to ourselves in fear they won't come true if we share them. Wishes are complicated. Is a wish something we turn to as a last resort? When we have exhausted all of our energy and resources? Is a wish a distraction? What would you wish for? More Than Anything? More than Life? More than Jewels? Are wishes enough? I wish I knew. I wish you all… I wish! J.T. Holmstrom

“Happily Ever After” is not old in the English language, popping up in literary sources first in the 1700s. Many stories end with it now, we see princes and princesses dancing in shimmering cloth as the phrase is sung out over them by chorus and the story fades away, but sometimes, stories are just ended; Aki nem hiszi, járjon utána! “Whoever doesn't believe it shall investigate.” in Hungarian

IAN ANDERSEN (Rapunzel’s Prince, u/s Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf) is a sophomore in the MTP. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Ian is excited to be a part of a University of Utah production. His most recent role was Topher in Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella (Highland High School). He also received a nomination for Best Actor Finalist (UHSMTA 2022) and achieved 3rd place in the CS Music competition. He would love to thank his family and friends for their continued support in his academic journey. Mr. C scholarship recipient.

JAKE ENGLESTAD (Steward, u/s Jack) is currently a junior in the MTP. His recent credits include Swing in The Lightning Thief (Babcock), Herr Zeller in The Sound of Music (Sundance), John Brooke in Little Women (Hopebox Theatre), and Light Board Operator for Senior Showcase '24 (Babcock). LAUREN CRUTCHER (Snow White, u/s Lucinda & Stepmother) is a senior in the MTP from southern California. Lauren is very excited to be performing in her final show with the Department of Theatre. Lauren was the Assistant Director and Assistant Choreographer for In Pieces: A New Musical in the Babcock last year. Most recently, Lauren performed in PTC's The Rocky Horror Show as a Phantom and as Lulu in the Babcock Theatre production of Cabaret. Lauren would like to thank the directing team, cast, and crew. ANNE CULLIMORE DECKER (Giant) is a former member of the ATP faculty and delighted to return to the Babcock Theatre stage. Previous Babcock credits include acting in Rare Bird, Hamlet, House of Bernada Alba, and Nevada, and directing Table Manners, Before I Got My Eye Put Out, and Close of Play. Other recent credits include La Fille du Regiment (Utah Opera); Winter (Salt Lake Acting Company), and TV/film appearances in Sweepstakes, Yellowstone, and Darling Companion. KASSI DOBLER (Rapunzel) is a senior in the Musical Theatre Program. Her most recent roles include Miss Barley in A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Grace in A Night to Dismember (Open Door/SL Fringe), and Sally Brown in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. She is in her final year at the University of Utah as a senior in the Musical Theatre BFA Program. Helena has studied voice and theatre performance for 10 years and trained at both Stagedoor Manor and Interlochen Arts Academy. In 2022, Helena spent the year on contract as the featured female singer with Royal Carribean Cruise Lines on the Jewel of the Seas, where she performed in multiple mainstage shows as a cast member, and as a solo artist with her own show. PARIS HOWARD (Little Red Riding Hood) is a rising senior in the MTP. Her recent credits include Graziella in West Side Story (Hopebox Theatre), the title role in Mary Poppins (Hammer Theatre), and Logainne in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. GUILLERMO OVIEDO KELLGREEN (Swing) is currently a junior in the MTP. Previously seen in the University's production of Cabaret, Guillermo has performed in A Christmas Carol for Ogden Musical Theater; in lead roles for high school productions of Tarzan, Newsies, and Sister Act; and in various parody shows at the Off Broadway Theater. ELIZABETH PETRUCKA (Cinderella) is a senior in the MTP and has loved her time at the University of Utah! Some of her favorite roles include Philoclea in Head Over Heels at The Grand and Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins. Elizabeth also loved her time working as a swing at Lagoon for their Summer 2022 season. Elizabeth is so grateful for the amazing education she has received at the U and to all her professors who have helped her get where she is today. LILA PRINCE (Baker's Wife) is originally from Southwest Florida and is in her final year in the MTP. She is so pleased to be

a part of her third and final production with the U. Previous Babcock credits include In Pieces: A New Musical (River) and Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: the Rock Experience! (Grande). Other credits include The Prom (Kaylee), The Rocky Horror Show, and Christmas in Connecticut at PTC; and Wonderful Town at TheatreZone. RACHEL ROETCISOENDER ( Jack's Mother, u/s Witch) was born and raised in the suburbs of Seattle and is currently a senior in the MTP. HANNAH SALAS (Cinderella’s Mother/ Granny, u/s Rapunzel) is a senior in the Musical Theatre Program. She grew up dancing at the School of the Sacramento Ballet until she discovered her passion for musical theatre in high school. Recent credits include In the Heights at West Valley Performing Arts (Ensemble), West Side Story at West Valley Performing Arts (Margarita/ Swing), and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (Cinderella) and The Sound of Music (Liesl) at Davis Musical Theatre Company. Hannah would like to thank her friends and family for their constant love and support, as well as her professors for the support and training they have provided during her time in the MTP. ANNA UHL (Florinda, u/s Little Red) is a senior in the MTP, and she is so excited to be performing in her first university show. Hailing from the lower Hudson Valley of New York, Anna has trained in theatre and dance for the past 10 years, spending many summers at the Joffrey Ballet School and Stagedoor Manor. Anna most recently performed in Elf at PTC (Ensemble), and a few of her favorite roles include The Sugarplum Fairy (The Nutcracker), Peggy Sawyer (42nd Street), and Jenny Hill/Dance Captain (Big Fish). ABBY WALKER (Swing) is a junior in the MTP from Draper, Utah, and she has been doing musical theatre since she was a kid. Abby participated in theater productions throughout high school, including playing the role of Natalie in All Shook Up and Ariel in The Little Mermaid (Corner Canyon). CREATIVE & PRODUCTION DAVID EGGERS (Director) is in his fifth year as Assistant Professor in the Musical Theatre Program for the U’s Department of Theatre. In addition to his work for the department, David also produces and

Other productions directed by David at the U include And the World Goes ‘Round (2021), Nine (2022), and Cabaret (Babcock, 2023). EMMA ASHTON (Costume Designer) is a senior in the Performing Arts Design Program (costume design emphasis). Emma’s previous credits include Costume Designer for As You Like It, Set Designer for Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days, and Costume Designer for Town Hall (Studio 115). Emma has also worked with Youth Theatre at the U as the Costume Designer for Matilda Jr. (Kingsbury Hall). Recipient of a Theatre Scholarship and the Frank M. Whiting Scholarship.

KAITLYN CROSBY (Scenic Designer) is a senior in the PADP (Set Design Emphasis) from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Prior to her time at the U, she participated extensively in her high school theater department. Previous U Theatre design credits include the New Work Project: Liminal, last season's production of As You Like It (Studio 115), and this season's production of The Lightning Thief (Babcock). MICHAEL J. HOREJSI (Lighting Designer) is an Associate Professor (Clinical) in the Performing Arts Design Program in the Department of Theatre, with an MFA in Design and Technical Theatre from The University of Minnesota. Michael has extensive national and international touring experience with arena and theater shows,

as well as sporting spectaculars such as the NBA All Star Jam Session, and the USA Swimming Olympic Trials. Michael has worked as a technician, artisan, and designer for theatres including Oregon Festival of American Music, The Guthrie Theatre, The Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, American Players Theatre, The Great American History Theatre, and others.

CYNTHIA "CINDY" JOHNSON (Hair and Makeup Designer) has been a theatrical wig designer for 25 years. She attended SLCC and Weber State University where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre/ Design and Entrepreneurship, and she has been a licensed cosmetologist for 20 years. Cindy has designed for Ogden Musical Theatre, The Grand Theatre, Sandy City, Draper City, The Hale Center Theatre (10 yrs.), UMT, Viva La Diva productions, and many other local and national theatres. Cindy was the owner of Hair Love Wigs Salons for many years, but her most recent wig work can be seen in the movies Dumplin' and Joe Bell, currently on Netflix. Cindy is grateful for her four children and loving husband that support her career. ELIZABETH WEBB KENNINGTON (Costume Designer) is a Senior in the PADP (Costume Design Emphasis). Previously, Elizabeth designed costumes for Cabaret (Babcock), Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days (Studio 115), and The Book Club Play (Babcock). She currently works as a Production Assistant for the Properties department. Other credits include Crafts Artisan at The Utah Shakespeare Festival (2022, 2023) and Puppet Fabricator for the Tuacahn Amphitheater production of Wonderland (2022). PAIGE LINFORD (1st Assistant Stage Manager) is a senior in the BFA Stage Management Program. This is her fourth time working on a stage management team. Paige is excited about what the future brings within the University of Utah’s Theatre department, and she would like to thank her family for their continued support of her journey.

ELLIOTT MOORE (Audio Engineer) is excited to be working with the University of Utah’s Department of Theatre again after having done Sound Design for Town Hall last fall. He has recently done sound engineering for Shrek: the Musical Jr. and Frozen Kids at Backstage Performing Arts Utah. Elliott is currently pursuing a BFA in the Performing Arts Design Program with an emphasis in Sound and Light Design.

KATIE LOBROT (Assistant Director) is currently a junior in the Musical Theatre Program, and she is excited and grateful for the opportunity to Assistant Direct Into the Woods! Previous onstage credits include Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Cinderella in Into the Woods (Sandy Arts Guild), and Martha Cratchit in A Christmas Carol (Hale Center Theatre). LUKE MORTON (Assistant Fight Choreographer) is a senior in the ATP from Gilbert, Arizona with sixteen years of acting experience. This is his fourth show at the U and his second mainstage production, following his turn as Captain Danby/Ensemble in last season’s The Sweet Science of Bruising (Babcock). Luke is an International Honor Thespian and a past recipient of the ASU Gammage Leadership Award. ALEX MARSHALL (Music Director, Conductor) M.M. Instrumental Conducting, B.M Piano Performance, has been the Music Director for the University of Utah since 2007. As an active member of the professional musical community in Utah, he regularly works and performs with its premier institutions, including the Utah Symphony, Pioneer Theatre Company, Hale Centre Theatre, and many others. International performance credits include France, London, Taiwan, and Carnegie Hall in New York. Recording credits include David Park Plays Fritz Kreisler and Passion of the Soul with Centaur Records. HANNA RICHARDS (2nd Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore in the BFA Stage Management Program, and she is thrilled to be doing her first show in the Babcock! Hanna has been loving her experience in the Department of Theatre and at the university—some of her recvent work includes Amahl and the Night Visitors/ A Christmas Carol (ASM, U Opera), Town Hall (ASM, Studio 115) and As You Like It (PA, Studio 115). MICHELLE OHUMUKUNI (Sound Designer) has always loved telling stories, and being Native Hawaiian has helped her gain experience from a young age. When she decided to dive into exploring sound and how it functions, this path led her to a MFA in Sound for the Performing Arts from

Michelle has designed shows from Utah to Indiana, toured the United States and Central America, worked with touring groups including Olivia Newton-John and Pentatonix, and has worked on local performances in multiple states. Michelle currently serves as one of the Sound Commissioners for the United States Institute of Theater Technology (USITT) and is a member of the Theatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association (TSDCA). She'd like to say “thank you to my outstanding sound team and all of your hard work!” ARIKA SCHOCKMEL (Prop Designer) has worked extensively in props and costume crafts for theatre, television, and film. She is the Prop Manager for the Department of Theatre and works as a prop and costume designer for Plan B Theatre. Regional credits include productions at The Egyptian Theatre, UFOCMT, Grand Teton, Dark Horse, SLAC, Utah Contemporary, Lyric Rep. USU Alum. Member of S.P.M., the Society of Prop Managers. Other projects include stage management, music, event hosting/ emceeing, props for film and television, and the occasional acting gig. STEPHEN SONDHEIM (Music & Lyrics) wrote the music and lyrics for Saturday Night (1954), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), The Frogs (1974), Pacific Overtures (1976), Sweeney Todd (1979), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sunday in the Park With George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Assassins (1991), Passion (1994) and Road Show (2008) as well as lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959) and Do I Hear a Waltz? (1965) and additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Anthologies of his work include Side by Side by Sondheim (1976), Marry Me a Little (1981), You're Gonna Love Tomorrow (1983), Putting It Together (1993/99) and Sondheim on Sondheim (2010). He composed the scores of the films Stavisky (1974) and Reds (1981) and songs for Dick Tracy (1990) and

the television production Evening Primrose (1966). His collected lyrics with attendant essays have been published in two volumes: Finishing the Hat (2010) and Look, I Made a Hat (2011). In 2010 Broadway's Henry Miller's Theatre was renamed The Stephen Sondheim Theatre in his honour; in 2019, London's Queens Theatre was also renamed the Sondheim. JAMES LAPINE (Book) is a playwright and director. On Broadway he has worked with Stephen Sondheim on Sunday in the Park with George; Into the Woods; and Passion. He also conceived and directed the musical review . With William Finn he created Falsettos recently revived by Lincoln Center Theater; Little Miss Sunshine; Muscle; and directed Finn's The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Other Broadway credits include his play based on Moss Hart's memoir Act One (also LCT), Amour, The Diary of Anne Frank, Golden Child, and Dirty Blonde. He has written the plays Table Settings, Twelve Dreams, The Moment When, Fran's Bed and Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing. Lapine has been nominated for eleven Tony Awards, winning on three occasions. He has also been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, SDC's Mr. Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater, and inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. CHRIS DUVAL (Producer) is a Professor for the Department of Theatre and was recently appointed as Interim Chair. Previously, Chris served as an Assistant Professor and the Head of BFA/MFA Performance at the University of Idaho, where he directed and taught courses in acting, voice, and movement. He has acted, directed and fight directed throughout the country including at Shakespeare theatres

in Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Orange County, as well as world premieres, contemporary plays, and classics at such theaters as the Denver Theater Center, Dallas Theatre Center, South Coast Repertory and many others. He has also worked as a teacher, actor, and fight director at universities, training programs, and regional theaters across the country. Chris is a Certified Teacher/Certified Fight Director/Theatrical Firearms Instructor with the Society of American Fight Directors, a Master Instructor/Senior Fight Director of Theatrical Combat with Dueling Arts International, an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voice Work, holds a 2nd degree black belt in Aikido, and is a member of AEA. He is the author of “Stage Combat Arts: an Integrated Approach to Acting, Voice and Text Work + Video,” published by Bloomsbury Methuen in 2016. He received a B.A. in Theatre Arts from California State University, Fullerton and an M.F.A. in Acting from the University of California, Irvine.
