The U Department of Theatre presents Henry V

Join us for another exciting season in the theatre!

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Theatre’s “Distanced but Not Distant” 2020/2021 Season. When we originally selected our shows—a lifetime ago, seemingly—we did so expecting to present them live and in-person in the Babcock Theatre and Studio 115. When circumstances changed, so did our priorities, and we changed our season to meet them. Despite the challenges we’ve faced in shifting to this smaller, safer season, we are excited to count ourselves among the pioneers of a new genre. As it continues to evolve, live video theatre can allow us to offer our students the experiential learning opportunities they need and opportunities to connect with audiences both near and far.

Our season opened on October 23rd with our first fully virtual production: The Night Witches by Rachel Bublitz. This potent, lyrical, live-streamed production told the story of one evening at the height of World War II for the legendary all-female 588th Night Bomber Regiment. We are thrilled to return to the virtual stage with a new take on a classic: Henry V, by William Shakespeare. Directed by returning guest artist Stephanie Weeks, Henry V wages war—literally—on questions of identity, authority, history, and privilege, as the former prankster “Hal” decides how to bear the uneasy burden of the crown. Finally, in place of the previously scheduled Shrek the Musical, our season will close in Spring 2021 with the same cast members performing a dynamic, safety-conscious production of Songs for a New World, by Jason Robert Brown. With eyes firmly on the future, we plan to engage audiences in new ways and old as our reconfigured cast sings stories of change, exploration, and discovery.

We begin our season in the night sky. We hope to end it in a new world. Whether we do or not depends on us. The impact of COVID-19 cannot be overstated, but in spite of all we’ve lost, our shared passion remains. The show will go on. Meanwhile, this intermission holds an opportunity for introspection and inquiry. As the saying goes, “the best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” Now is the time to look inward and rethink our processes and assumptions; to reflect on theatre as an art form and an industry; and to reexamine whose stories are being told, by whom, and how, and why. As we invent safer ways to tell stories in the present, we must also invest in the brave, inclusive theatre of the future. The show will go on.

…when people think of HENRY V, it’s usually the St. Crispin’s Day speech. If that’s all I know from the play, what am I missing?

I think what you’d be missing is something we do a good job of showing, something I’m really investigating, which is how human this story is. Henry is not just heroic. He can be merciless and cold-hearted. And he is also somewhat of an underdog, even though he’s a king, and he comes out on top against big odds.

Hopefully—not only because there are nine actors playing the role—you can see yourself in Henry, making those choices. You’re capable of greatness, of leadership and courage, and you’re also capable of ruthlessness and self-doubt, and fear.

And it’s not just about Henry: it’s about the common man going off to war, and friendship, and loss of friendship. It’s about Katherine wanting more outside of her station, and using whatever agency she can to achieve it in small ways.

I think if that heroic moment is all you know, you’re missing these great moments where you see the role of God in the Church of England and the monarchy. Many times in this piece, Henry defers to something even larger than himself. This brilliant man believes in himself so much, until he doesn’t. He acknowledges that you have to ask for help. We all feel that weight to some extent. We’re all the final authority about something, so what happens when you don’t have the answers?

Who do you go to? You might have such fortitude until that moment when you realize, “wait a minute, I don’t know everything.” And maybe you recognize that there’s more to know, to explore, to learn. And you make space for it.

Leadership in the Stories of Tomorrow

Henry V is one of ten history plays that Shakespeare wrote, focusing on English history from King John to King Henry VIII. Within each of these plays, a prominent leader figure stands tall. It follows, then, that the leaders of today will often be the stories of tomorrow. What are the implications of leadership?

Can anyone be a leader, or is it more difficult than most realize?

Do we know, today, what kind of leaders we should seek after?

When first performed in 1599, Shakespeare’s Henry V would have been patriotic. It was performed to English audiences, and the English are the protagonists of the play. Unlike many writers today, however, Shakespeare was writing in a time of hereditary monarchy. Leadership was not chosen by democracy, but instead descended from previous leaders. As Henry states in the play, this is not always something to look forward to. Yet, he is rather transparently ambitious from start to finish. He revives the war against the French, he claims rights to not only the throne but the princess’ hand in marriage, and he boldly leads the charge into an almost certainly lost battle. It can hardly be ignored that Henry has achieved personal success by the end of the play. His endeavors served England, but they also served him. Is being a king really all that hard?

Shakespeare contrasts power and humility in Henry to help us root for him while also earnestly contemplating his leadership dynamics. We see him try to reason with the Dauphin, uncover a

treacherous murder plot, join his soldiers in disguise, contemplate the repercussions of kingship on himself and his followers, and lament over his personal sacrifices and fears. We even see him praise God for his victories, relinquishing personal glory. Is Henry’s leadership humbling? Do leaders bear a burden that we followers should be glad has been taken up for us? Historical evidence suggests that Henry made use of more innovative combat tactics of the time. He took risks. Furthermore, both the fictional and real Henry—albeit Shakespeare’s fictional Henry is likely far more dramatic—gave stirring speeches that showed fervent investment in his troops. He was no doubt skilled with rhetoric and had no intention of manipulating his followers. He sincerely wished to teach them the purpose of war and honor. He makes his relationship with them personal, and he stands with them. He declares his life equal to theirs.

Henry V presents Henry as the pinnacle of valiant leadership.

Perhaps the most unexpected indicator of this, however, comes in the final scene of the play when Henry must convince Katherine to marry him. We see a new fragility to Henry’s demeanor. As he opens his heart to Katherine, he is vulnerable. He admits his shortcomings, but nevertheless remains confident in his purpose. Despite the language barrier, he convinces Katherine that England and France will be better joined in peace. In the end, Henry follows the wartime heroics and rousing speeches with soft kindness and objectives of harmony. A good leader, suggests Shakespeare, is someone who can wage peace as well as they can wage war.

The leaders of today will be the stories of tomorrow. What kind of leader will you follow?

After a long hiatus due to COVID-19, he is excited to perform again in an innovative and virtual way. Previous credits include Malcolm in Macbeth (Studio 115), Reporter/Local in Floyd Collins (Babcock Theatre), and Vaska Pepel in The Lower Depths (dir. Alexandra Harbold). He thanks his professors, family, and friends for their amazing and constant support. Recipient of Department of Theatre scholarships and the Victor Jory Scholarship.

JACK DYLAN GARDNER (Henry, Chorus, Bishop of Ely, Montjoy, MacMorris, Court) is a senior in the ATP here at the U, and he is excited to be in this production, especially during COVID times. Past credits include Macduff in Macbeth (Studio 115), Steve in She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall), and Thomas in The Rivals (Babcock Theatre). He thanks his classmates, director, and professors for all they have taught him.

JESSICA GRAHAM (Henry, Katherine, Chorus, Scroop, Gower, French Ambassador) is a senior in the ATP. Previous credits include Lorraine in Hindsight (Sackerson), Young Macduff/ Ensemble in Macbeth (Studio 115), Ensemble in Julius Caesar (Studio 115), and most recently, Marta in The Night Witches (virtual Dept. of Theatre production). She has also appeared in various student and class projects/ productions, such as As You Like It, Hippolyta, Grey Area, and New Play Workshop. LIAM G. JOHNSON (Henry, Chorus, Pistol, Dauphin, Cambridge, Governor of Harfleur) is a senior in the ATP and was last seen as King Duncan/Caithness in last fall’s production of Macbeth (Studio 115). Other credits include David in The Rivals (Babcock Theatre) and Buddy Layman in The Diviners (The REP). He thanks his parents and professors for their unending support and guidance over these past four years.

Liam is a proud member of the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle in Hollywood and is a Marian D. Harrison Scholarship recipient.

CONNOR NELIS JOHNSON (Henry, Chorus, Exeter, Nym, Orleans) is a senior in the ATP at the U. Previous university credits include She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall); The Odyssey, The Rivals, and Big Love (Babcock Theatre). Other credits: The Messenger, Twelfth Night (PTC); Hindsight

TOM ROCHE (Henry, Chorus, Westmoreland, Bardolf, Jamy, Duke of Burgundy) is a senior in the ATP, and he is thrilled to be a part of this new form of theatre! Past credits include The Soothsayer in Julius Caesar (Studio 115), Lucius O’Trigger in The Rivals (Babcock Theatre), and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (UCT).

LEXIE THOMSEN (Henry, Chorus, Bedford, Alice, Williams, Constable of France) is thrilled to be in this production of Henry V. She is currently a junior in the ATP and has been seen as Viola in Twelfth Night, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Rosalinda in As You Like It (Parker Theatre) and as Kaliope in She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall). She is grateful to her family and friends for their unending support, as well as Stephanie, her fellow castmates, and the incredible production team for making theatre possible in times like this. SHELICE WARR (Henry, Chorus, Quickly, Fluellen, Queen of France) is honored to be in her fifth production at the U. Shelice is a senior in the ATP and was last seen as Alexandra in The Night Witches (virtual Dept. of Theatre production). She also appeared

as a Witch in Macbeth and as Decius Brutus in Julius Caesar (Studio 115). She thanks her professors for their constant support and the amount of time they put into making her not only a better actor, but a better human being. CREATIVE TEAM EMILY BEATSE (Assistant Production Manager) is a senior at the U, earning her BFA in Stage Management. She is very excited to be the Assistant Production Manager and get another viewpoint of the theatre world.

Previous educational credits include Tartuffe (SM, Studio 115 -- postponed due to COVID-19), Amahl... (ASM, Grand Theatre), Men on Boats (1st ASM, Studio 115), and Our Country’s Good (ASM, Babcock Theatre). Professional credits include Mary Stuart, Lifespan of a Fact, and The Lion in Winter (2nd ASM, PTC). Proud recipient of the Fine Arts Advisory Board Scholarship and the Utahna B. Meilstrup scholarship.

GRACE CAWLEY (Assistant Director) is a Junior in the ATP. Recent roles include Raisa in The Night Witches (virtual Dept. of Theatre production, Dir. Alexandra Harbold), Alcinous in The Odyssey (Babcock Theatre), and The Baron(ess) in The Lower Depths (Pinnacle Acting Company, Dir. Alexandra Harbold). WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY SYDNEY CHEEK-O’DONNELL (Producer) is the Interim Chair of the Department of Theatre and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. Her long-time commitment to political theatre, social justice, and feminism have informed every aspect of her work, fostering a deep interest in the impact of the arts on social and emotional well-being. Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell’s application of theatre to unlikely fields, has led to a wide range of projects and collaborations in both clinical and educational settings.

This affinity for uniting unexpected collaborators extends to her work in the College of Fine Arts; as Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell helps faculty members communicate the significance of arts research to colleagues and funding sources in other disciplines. In the Department of Theatre, Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell has taught History of Theatre, New Plays Workshop, Dramaturgy, and a variety of dramatic literature courses, and headed Theatre Studies from 2005 to 2016.

Current projects include working with an interdisciplinary team to create a video series intended to support families of children with Down Syndrome, as well as writing a handbook called Arts for Health: Theatre (Emerald Publishing).

Dr. Cheek-O’Donnell earned a PhD in Theatre History and Dramatic Criticism from the University of Washington’s School of Drama, and received her undergraduate degree from Carleton College in Minnesota.

SAM DALTON (Scenic Designer) is a junior studying set design in the PADP at the U. This is Sam’s third show at

the U, formerly designing Macbeth (Studio 115) and assistant designing She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall) for the 2019-2020 season. Sam is grateful for the opportunity to design a show like this because of the unique challenges it brings, and he is eager for live theatre to return to his life. Sam would like to thank the entire theatre department for their support and guidance.

JAYDEN DUDLEY (Production Assistant) is excited to work on Henry V as her first show at the U. Jayden is currently a freshman in the Stage Management Program at the U. She has previously worked on Singing in the Rain (Stage Manager/Student Director) in 2019 at Logan High School as her first show working backstage. She is a proud recipient of the For Utah Scholarship.

KATHRYN EDWARDS (Costume Designer) is in her third year here at the U, and she is a sophomore in the PADP with an emphasis in Costume Design.

This is her first production with the Department of Theatre, and she would like to thank the cast and crew for being so kind and welcoming to her.

MEGHAN GIBSON (Lighting Designer) is a junior in the PADP and is thrilled to be working on a production again!

She has been designing and assisting in lighting since she was 15 and moved from Portland, Oregon, to study design. Recent work includes designing Macbeth (Studio 115), Newsies (Draper Arts Council), and Mamma Mia (The Elsinore Theatre). She was the Assistant Lighting Designer for She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall) and programmed lights

AILISH HARRIS (Sound Designer/ Composer) is a junior in Stage Management and PADP, with a Minor in Creative Writing. Recent work includes She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall) as Assistant Puppet Fabrication Designer and Stage Manager for Death of the American Teenager (University of Utah Youth Theatre), which traveled to the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Previous credits include working as Stage Manager for Alice (Kingsbury Hall) and as Assistant Stage Manager for The Odyssey (Babcock Theatre).

DANI LINCOLN (Stage Manager) is a senior in the Stage Management Program. Recent credits include serving as Assistant Stage Manager for Tartuffe (Studio 115), She Kills Monsters (Kingsbury Hall), and Macbeth (Studio 115), and as Assistant Sound Designer for The Odyssey (Babcock Theatre) and Form of a Girl Unknown (SLAC). Dani thanks her parents for their continued support of her theatre career, and all of the professors that have helped her get to her last year in the program.

JASON SNOW (Media Programmer) is excited to be working on Henry V. He is currently double majoring with a BFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Performing

Arts Design in addition to a BA in Film and Media Arts with an emphasis in Film Production. Recent credits include Lighting Designer for Tartuffe (Studio 115 – postponed due to COVID-19) and It Doesn’t Rain Enough (Open Door Productions). He is looking forward to this upcoming production.

BEN STANFORD (Dramaturg) is a senior in the Theatre Studies HBA Program and an award-winning playwright. Ben’s recent plays include The Experiment with On Pitch Performing Arts and OneSided here at the U. He is also an actor and singer, most recently performing with the Utah Opera and the Draper Philharmonic & Choral Society. Ben is the proud recipient of the Marion Stiebel Siciliano Utah Fine Arts Institute Scholarship, the Ralph E. and Winnifred S. Margetts Scholarship, the Promising Playwright Award, and the Hoenig Theatre Artist Scholarship.

BRITTANY TIMPSON (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be working on her first show as an assistant stage manager for Henry V. This is Brittany’s first year in the Stage Management Program. Previously, she has been fortunate enough to work on the production crew for last season’s productions of Macbeth (Deck/Props, Studio 115) and Floyd Collins (Sound Board Operator, Babcock Theatre).

Brittany would like to thank her friends and family for all of their love and support, especially her dad, for his pride in her, and her beautiful angel mother, who never stopped believing in her.

She is a company member of Target Margin Theater, which received the 2019 OBIE Winner in Recognition of Artistic Achievement and Commitment to Excellence in Theater. Favorite stage roles include The Coast Starlight (Anna), Ruined (Salima), The Crucible (Tituba), Animal Farm ( Old Major, Boxer). Film: ExDoofus (dir: Melvin Van Peebles, Tribeca Film Festival) and Rosy (2017). TV: Tales of The City for Netflix starring Laura Linney. Directing credits include After Midnight, More Wonder, Please (Target Margin Theater). In addition to Henry V, Stephanie directed Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed at the University of Utah in 2017. The production was chosen as one of six out of 70 plays to be showcased at “Festivention,” hosted by the Kennedy Center, and was awarded Outstanding Performance and Production Ensemble. PAYTON WRIGHT (Assistant Stage Manager) is a junior in the Stage Management program here at the U. She is a recent graduate of Salt Lake Community College, where she earned her Associate of Science in Theatre Arts. Previously, Payton has worked as a stage manager and a junior technical director for Pinnacle Acting Company, The Box, SLAC, and Capitol Theatre. Currently, Payton serves as the Secretary for the Stage Manager’s Council at the U. She looks forward to continuing her SM adventures with Rigoletto at Kingsbury Hall.
