Areas of Study/ Degree Programs Production Opportunities

The Department of Theatre offers five pre-professional BFA programs, as well as a BA program in Theatre Studies. Each program is designed to prepare students for careers in theatre and theatre-related fields, as well as advanced graduate education.

Actor Training Program (BFA)

Conservatory-style, craft-based program for students seeking careers in stage/screen acting

Musical Theatre Program (BFA)

Dynamic, demanding, multifaceted education for aspiring musical theatre professionals

Stage Management Program (BFA)

Hands-on learning and artistic development for future stage/production management professionals

Performing Arts Design Program (BFA)

Career-focused training, mentorship, & production experience available in multiple design fields

Theatre Studies (BA)

Each season consists of seven productions: four plays, two musicals , and one musical for young audiences (produced in collaboration with the awardwinning Youth Theatre at the U program). Various production and performance opportunities are also available in and around the department, including the New Plays Workshop, senior projects, short films produced by the Film and Media Arts Department, student productions, and faculty-guided work. Many undergrads also gain professional experience with theatre companies in and around Salt Lake City, including Salt Lake Acting Company, Plan-B Theatre, The Grand, Utah Opera, and many more.

Off-Broadway: Monsoon Wedding (St. Ann's Warehouse Premiere Production, 2023)

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Students can also experience five different performance spaces, ranging in size and complexity from the experimental black box “Studio 115” to the forthcoming Meldrum Theatre, projected to open in Spring 2024. The Meldrum will be a state-of-the-art performance space shared with Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC), a professional LORT-B theatre located on campus. The Department of Theatre maintains a close working relationship with PTC, including an audition-only Performance Internship Program for senior year students.

To support our students’ professional prospects, we offer multiple opportunities to work with and audition for regional, national and international theatre companies and agents. We frequently host guest artists and workshops with nationally/internationally renowned actors, directors, choreographers, dramaturgs, designers, producers, and playwrights. 1. Apply to the University of Utah by December 1, 2023 You'll automatically be considered for all university meritbased scholarships. Non-resident students who meet this deadline may also be eligible for tuition discounts through the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE).

2. Fill out a General Scholarship Application

This connects you with the university's scholarship system so you can find scholarships and track your applications. Once you complete this step, the system can automatically recommend any additional scholarships you qualify for!

3. Submit your FAFSA before February 1, 2024 Qualifying* Utah residents who meet the application and FAFSA deadlines will automatically be considered for the For Utah scholarship
