Dear PNM’s,
My name is Jaden Achen and I am the Panhellenic President here at the University of Utah. With recruitment right around the corner, I could not be more excited to be there to encourage you all through the process. As I reflect on my time in fraternity and sorority life it is crazy to think that 3 years ago I was in the same shoes as you. I was also a much different person at the time and I have this community to thank for my continuous involvement and growth. I have been able to find family and comfort in a group of women, who are continuously supporting me in any way they can.
If I could go through this process again, I would in a heartbeat. My advice to you is to go in with an open mind and open heart. While you are in search of a chapter that aligns with your personal values, remember that there are so many amazing women in our community and you’ll find a home in any chapter. Recruitment plays the biggest role in our community and is one of my most touching moments of college. Having an open heart throughout recruitment allowed me to make connections during the process, and these connections remain till this day. If you trust the process you will end up exactly where you belong. I am so excited to see all of you this fall recruitment and I can’t wait to share the power of this community.
Love, Jaden
All of us on the Panhellenic Council and every member of our community are so happy to welcome you to recruitment! Your decision to go through our recruitment process is one that will hopefully bring you friends, community, and a deep commitment to personal development. While college is only a finite number of years, the impact of joining a sorority is one that will create bonds and memories for life.
Throughout this process you will have the opportunity to meet our six Panhellenic chapters participating in primary recruitment and talk to members from each one. We encourage you to explore all of your options and keep an open mind throughout this process. Every chapter you visit has unique qualities and amazing women. Even though you may only join one, the entire community is excited to welcome you with open arms.
Beginning your college experience with sorority recruitment is an exciting endeavor full of possibility. I remember when I was an incoming freshman preparing for recruitment, and as an out-of-state student I was nervous but eager to make friends. I can confidently say it was the best decision I have made thus far. The friendships I have created and the community I have felt has made college feel a lot less intimidating and much more fun. In addition to my lifelong friends, I have had many opportunities for personal growth in leadership roles in and outside of Greek Life, as well as philanthropic endeavors and community service initiatives. Being a part of this community has been a positive pillar of my college experience and I hope it will be for you too!
As you embark in this process, please remember to enjoy this week, take some deep breaths, and be yourself. We look forward to having you in this wonderful community!
Love, Grace
The National Panhellenic Conference is the umbrella organization for 26 inter/national sororities. Here on campus we are home to 6 of the 26 Panhellenic sororities. The NPC strives to advance and advocate for the sorority experience. They work to "assist collegiate and alumnae chapters of the NPC member organizations in coopering colleges and universities and to foster interfraternal relationships."
Together, the council members strive to unite sorority women and strengthen their values through cooperation, common interests, and talents brought from each chapter. They work together with the delegates to make the Greek community a positive and active influence on the U of U campus and in the Salt Lake City community.

WHAT HAPPENS:
WHAT HAPPENS: You will visit the remaining chapters you were invited back to during Round 2 Part 1 Once you are done with Round 2 chapter visits, (it is possible to be done on the 14th as well) PNM’s will once again input preferences on which chapters they would like to return to.
August 16th
August 17th
WHAT HAPPENS: WHAT HAPPENS:
WHAT HAPPENS: On Preference, or Pref Day, you will return to up to 2 chapters. This is the day to really focus on what you want to gain from joining a sorority. After the last event, you will walk to the union to complete your Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) See pages 15-16 for more details
WHAT HAPPENS: Rounds are over, you have finished preferencing, and now it's finally time to find out which chapter is yours to call home! All PNMs will arrive in the Union and each will receive a sealed envelope. There will be a designated time to open your envelopes to reveal your Bid Card, and also to find out which chapters your Rho Gammas belong to. After opening your envelope, you will gather around your chapter's designated area and go to the chapter's Bid Day festivities. This is a fun day to get to know your new chapter and make friends before the start of the semester!
We strive to focus on Values Based Recruitment in our Panhellenic community We emphasize academics, equality, inclusion, and service, and we encourage you to be conscious of these values this week. We also encourage you to consider which chapters have values that align with your own as you move through the recruitment process.
The week of Primary Recruitment consists of five days broken into three “rounds,” each structured to show you what each sorority has to offer. You will also have a chance to meet current sorority women in each of the chapters. Take the time to ask them any questions that you may have about activities, financial obligations, scholarship, new member programs, and campus life in general. It is very important that you keep an open mind during this process and carefully decide where YOU feel you fit best.
Please recognize that Primary Recruitment at The University of Utah is a mutual selection process in that both the Potential New Members and the individual sororities are making choices All Potential New Members will have the chance to meet every sorority chapter during the first round of Recruitment, but the remaining two rounds (Investment and Preference) are by invitation only. Throughout the rounds of recruitment, Potential New Members will be able to rank/preference the chapters they wish to re-visit and the sororities will make decisions regarding the PNM’s they want to re-invite to their rounds. Potential New Members should understand that they may not receive invitations to all the chapters that they would like to re-visit. While this may seem overwhelming, the Panhellenic Executive Board and Rho Gammas will explain this process in detail on the first day and throughout the week.

The University of Utah Panhellenic Council has three Associate Chapters: Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Delta Chi, and Phi Sigma Rho These chapters offer the same benefits as the other Panhellenic chapters at the U. The term “associate” simply means that these three organizations have national organizations that are NOT part of the National Panhellenic Conference Since our three associate chapters are not affiliated with the formal recruitment process, you do not have to register or pay a fee to participate in their recruitment All three associate chapters have different recruitment processes; therefore, the dates for recruitment may vary for each chapter.

Phi Sigma Rho is a sorority for women and nonbinary people in STEM. Their mission is in ReEngineering Sorority Life.
The Rho Gammas are recruitment counselors that will guide you through the recruitment process Rho Gammas are current sorority members who have disaffiliated from their personal chapter in order to assist PNM’s in an unbiased manner They will help with schedules, answer questions, and assist with anything else you may need! They are here to help you through recruitment and make it the best possible experience for you!
IF I PARTICIPATE IN PRIMARY RECRUITMENT, AM I OBLIGATED TO JOIN A SORORITY?
Potential New Members who choose to participate in recruitment are not obligated to join a sorority The recruitment process gives PNM’s interested in sorority membership the opportunity to explore sorority life and see if it is the right fit for them.
WILL ALL PARTICIPANTS PLEDGE A SORORITY AT THE END OF RECRUITMENT?
Because recruitment is a mutual selection process, there are many different outcomes to this process. Participation in primary recruitment does not guarantee you an invitation to a sorority. However, a majority of our PNM’s will join a sorority by the end of the process!
WHAT IF I AM NOT A FRESHMAN AND I WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN PRIMARY RECRUITMENT?
You do not have to be a incoming freshman in order to particpate in recruitment! We have had many PNM’s find their forever home after freshman year!
DO I NEED TO ATTEND ALL OF THE INVITES ON MY RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE?
Yes! The objective of recruitment is for you, as a PNM , to learn as much as you can about the Panhellenic community and each of the chapters By doing this you can make the most educated decision regarding membership. If you intentionally miss an event you were invited to, you are not maximizing your options.
WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO BE IN A CERTAIN SORORITY?
Only wanting to be a member of one specific sorority, or only considering a few sororities, can severely limit a PNM’s options for membership could be released from the recruitment process. We encourage you to keep an open mind about the chapters and make a decision that is best for you and do not make your selections based on others’ opinions.
While each sorority’s membership requirements differ, a general range for commitment is anywhere from 2 to 8 hours a week Whether it be helping with a community service project, planning an event, or regular weekly meetings, members have learned to manage their time wisely with other commitments such as schoolwork, a job, friends outside of their chapter, as well as other organizations that they are involved with.
ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING IN A SORORITY?
There are many benefits of joining a sorority! These benefits include, but are not limited to: leadership experience, academic support, mentorship, intramural and team sports, community service, alumnae networking, wider range of connections and resources on campus, life skills development, lifelong friendships, and the potential to receive various scholarships.
Our Greek community has a zero tolerance for hazing. Hazing is against the policies of the University, state law, and Greek Council. We provide in-depth education around what hazing is, how to combat hazing from happening, and what the consequences are to organizations, chapter presidents, new member educators and new members of fraternities and sororities.
“MY FAMILY MEMBER WAS IN *X* SORORITY? DOES THAT MEAN I AUTOMATICALLY GET A BID?
Panhellenic does not have any specific policies on legacies. Each sororities has their own policy regarding legacies, and it is up to each chapter to decide whether to offer member to a legacy. Likewise, legacies are not obligated to pledge the sorority to which they are a legacy. Each potential new member is evaluated on an individual basis, and sororities are more likely to consider mutual compatibility versus a family connection.
