greenland­— A Welcome Welcome. Tervetuloa. Bienvenida. Shalom. Ласкаво просимо. Greetings in a hundred ways. We are so glad you have taken the time to join us tonight for this performance of greenland. greenland is an abstract, large-scale dance collaboration between many people—the directors, the performers, the sound, set, and costume designers, and many others. Although not narrative, it is about Scale, Impact, Land, and the Mass of Community that can shape Change, both good and bad. It hints to migrations, finding home, coming in, taking homeland, diminishing and changing spaces, and the shifting lands beneath our feet. It acknowledges the artifice of manicured spaces that take the place of natural landscapes and habitats. It acknowledges that the land beneath our feet and the air above our heads are rapidly changing due to human impact. We invite you to watch, listen and experience––and hope that it propels us to take care of each other, the land, and our ancestors.

greenland­— An Acknowledgement, An Invitation Take a moment to consider this space.

We sit together in a contemporary theater, with seats and lights and walls, that sits on land that had until recently been under the stewardship of the Ute, Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone, and Diné peoples. We wish to begin this show, which considers ideas of shifting landscapes in abstracted, danced, ways, by acknowledging that the physical land we are sitting on was stolen around 200 years ago from Native peoples, who had been living on, and protecting this land for tens of thousands of years before colonial settlers arrived. We as members of the Salt Lake and Utah communities continue to benefit from the use and occupation of this land since the arrival of colonial settlers. We also acknowledge millions of displaced peoples, refugees, and migrants throughout the world, and how industrial practices are causing rapid climate and land use change that affect people’s abilities to claim and remain in homelands.

We invite you to consider where you come from––who are your people? How did you

land here? We invite you to consider how earth suffers from overuse and extraction due to capitalist practices, which override and displace sustainable land stewardship that is practiced by Indigenous peoples.

When we think about keeping ecosystems balanced, whole, green, and reviving, we acknowledge that industrialism threatens the place-based knowledge of the Ute, Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone and Diné peoples, which has been practiced for millennia. We acknowledge that their examples of land stewardship offer good practices in preservation and sustainability and offer a call to action to better build relationships with local Native communities and ultimately support the return of Indigenous lands.

Consider acknowledging and giving thanks to Native communities, Refugee communities, and all disenfranchised communities and their elders both past and present, as well as future generations. Join us in acknowledging our own elders, their wisdom, and their appreciation for the land.

In this acknowledgment we invite a renewed call towards actions to sustain our lands and communities.
