WELCOME The Student Concert Committee is excited to welcome you to the Fall 2021, Modern Dance Student Concert! We are so excited to bring the show to our audience in person and in the virtual space this year so we can keep our audience and dancers safe. We are proud to showcase the works of School of Dance students who are still pushing forward to make dance. We as a committee highly encourage mask-wearing and social distancing, as well as the guidance, put out by the School of Dance and the University of Utah. This production would not have been possible without the help of many hardworking and dedicated individuals. The Student Concert Committee would specifically like to thank Cole Adams, Isaac Taylor, Sean Carter, Rebecca Johnson, Luc Vanier, Ben Sandberg, Austin Hardy, Molly Powers, Marina Gomberg, and the other School of Dance faculty members who have guided us along the way. This work showcases my creative process when art-making, as it encompasses my thoughts of frustration and realization when trying to find my artistic voice.
Summer Blues Choreographer: Shelby Strickler and Jamie Chen Dancer: Jamie Chen Music: Beautiful Days by Surfaces Note: Summer Blues is about the beauty of the color blue, and the fact that it represents happiness. I was inspired by the sky because every day when I look at the sky it is always a pretty color, I wanted to mesh that idea with dance and video in this project.

dear mother, all flowers remind me of you Choreographer: Elle Taylor Dancer: Elle Taylor Music: Flight Not Yet Fled by Michael Wall Note: My angel grandma Cleo lived a life of love, grace, deep feelings, hugs, family, warmth and flowers. She preferred to live in a blooming world and she brought anyone who crossed her path into that world of beauty and gentleness and love. This piece came from a place of exploring my own navigation of a world still filled with flowers, but one without my grandma Cleo. I am exploring my own connection to flowers; the way they are embedded in my childhood memories and the way they make me feel in this new landscape of life. It can hurt to see the world continue to bloom when there is so much pain within each of us, but I want to share an expression of the full spectrum of pain and blooming, frustration and softness, grief and love, all at once. Jökulhlaup Choreographer and Dancer: Chloe Barry Filming: Ellen Weiler Flashlight: Anna Kazwell Editing: Chloe Barry Music: Perfume Genius and Craig Armstrong Note: A jökulhlaup is a type of glacial flood. Meltwater builds up underneath a glacier until the water pressure becomes too great for the ice to hold it back causing an abrupt outpouring of water from the glacier. In this piece, I explored a physical environment as a way of depicting my exploration and thoughts surrounding what gender is, and what gender means to me.
Home Choreographer: Anna Kazwell Dancers: Alyssa King, Abby Pace, Alli Schuh, Grace Ward Music: Semolina by Slow Melody with voiceovers by dancers Note: This process began by asking each of my dancers, “What is home to you? Is it a place, a feeling, a memory, a person?” From there, we built this piece on five words: memories, love, space, time, barefoot. I created a phrase using these five words and taught it to the dancers, allowing them to interpret them as they saw fit. I wanted to also play with the use of improvisation based on the five words and each dancer’s idea of the feeling of home.
An Average Artistic Day Choreographer: Alyssa King Dancers: Josie Kolbeck and Callie Sweeten Music: The Dreaming Poet and His Cello by Scholler Note: All types of arts deserve to be appreciated, respected, and showcased. Especially after the hardships placed on the arts during the Covid-19 pandemic, support from all programs are much needed. This piece showcases the visions and inspirations that come through when an artist is creating work. It is a representation of how much beauty is possible when we intermix separate art forms. Art should be unified and experienced by all. Special thanks and love to my incredible dancer and artist for joining me in this process. Enjoy!
