FROM THE DIRECTORS We are tickled to welcome you to the Graduate Dance Concert, Coddiwomple. Coddiwomple, to travel in a purposeful manner toward a vague destination, encapsulates the art-making process for us. What seems like feeling around in the dark somehow emerges as a performance work brought to life by talented and vibrant performers. These works are the culmination of 2+ years of coddiwompling creative research into embodiment, empowerment, surrealism, uncanny, and social dance forms. We would like to thank our mentors through this process, Eric Handman and Alex Barbier. Our performers and thesis committees (listed in the program notes) have been integral to the development of these works. THE CREATORS Jessica Boone is a dance artist and educator from Texas. She earned a BFA in Dance from the Ohio State University and is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate and a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Modern Dance program at the University of Utah. Before graduate school, Jessica performed professionally as a company member of Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company for six years. She also worked closely with dancer and choreographer Alyson Dolan while in Austin. Jessica performed in dance festivals, at universities, and in public schools around Texas. Her experience developing autonomy and intuition as a professional dancer inspires her belief that performers are choreographers through their presence and instinctual choices on stage. Jessica is discovering an even deeper love for sharing dance through teaching and choreographing at the University of Utah. She is driven to shape authentic inner experiences for the dancers and collaborators in her choreographic work and continues to research the convergence of vulnerability and empowerment in performance practice. Austin Hardy is a passionate local dance and performance artist, teacher and small-business owner based in Salt Lake City, Utah. His research interests and movement practice are
a junction of physical performative art and the kinesthetic experience. Austin received a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah in 2015. He had the honor to perform in various choreographic works by: John Beasant III, “Cross Currents” Merce Cunningham Organization, Pamela Geber-Handman, and Eric Handman. Austin is an active freelance artist in the Salt Lake City community. Performing as a guest artist with Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company and most recently in RDT’s re-staging of Donald McKayle’s, Rainbow Round My Shoulder. Austin has directed and self-produced two evenings of dance; Nomad, and La Mela, in which he performed in choreographic works by Rebecca Aneloski and Stephen Koester. Austin has currently returned to the University of Utah’s School of Dance as an MFA Modern Dance candidate. He serves as a teaching assistant instructing various dance technique and movement creation courses. Virginia Broyles is a performer, maker, and teacher. She is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Utah. She teaches technique, improvisation, and creative process in studio, workshop, intensive, and master class settings. She has a BFA from the University of Georgia and spent 7 years working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Additionally, she has trained at Impulstanz International Festival, the American
Dance Festival, P.O.R.C.H. at Ponderosa, Bates Dance Festival, and FRESH Festival. Virginia’s dance and video work has been presented at Aux Experimental Arts Festival, The Garage, Levy Salon, Dance Mission Theater, and the Atlanta Fringe Festival. She has performed in works by Bala Sarasvati, Rob Esposito, Rebecca Enghauser, Catellier Dance Projects, Hallie Dalsimer, Alison Williams, Kathleen Hermesdorf/ALTERNATIVA, Scott Wells & Dancers, Simpson|Stulberg Collaborations, and Lauren Simpson Dance. She has been a member of vîv dance company and BANDALOOP vertical dance company.
