Accident/Incident/Near Miss Reporting and Procedures

Do you know what to do if you or a coworker have an accident or a near miss at work? Being familiar with the correct procedures ensures that proper care/support is received and also helps to disseminate information across the broader COS community. Sharing this information (while keeping identities confidential) ensures that the circumstances surrounding the incident can be understood and measures put in place to lessen the likelihood of the same incident happening to someone else. This session will cover where to seek medical attention for students and employees as well as who you need to report information to and how.

Instructor: Brandon Newell – Occ. Safety Manager, U. of U. Environmental Health and Safety

Active Aggressor/Stop the Bleed

This session will focus on what to do in an active aggressor scenario and how to treat wounds where controlling bleeding is critical. Participants will watch two videos and have follow up discussion with Emergency Management and University of Utah Police. This session contains topics and content that may be difficult for some individuals.

Instructor: Taylor Wilson – Emergency Management Specialist, U of U Dept. of Public Safety and Reggie Johnson –Police Sergeant, University Police

Basic First Aid, Including AED Use

This course will cover how to recognize when to call 911, what to do until an ambulance arrives and how to treat basic injuries and illnesses. This includes AED and compressions-only CPR training, but will not include a certification.

Shelly Beck – Assistant Professor, Health and Kinesiology, The Center for Emergency Programs (*Training)

Biohazard Spill Cleanup – Includes Hands on Training with a Simulated Spill (*Training)

Do you work with biohazardous materials (BSL-1 or BSL-2)? Do you know the correct procedure for cleaning up spills of that material in an open lab space? In a biosafety cabinet? In a centrifuge? If the answer is “No.” or it’s been a while since you’ve been trained on these procedures, or you just want more practice, this session is for you! The first part of the training will review proper protocols in a classroom setting. The second part will involve hands-on cleaning of a simulated spill of biohazardous material. Session capacity is limited and only those who’ve signed up ahead of time can participate in this training.

Instructor: Chris Hunter - Assistant Biosafety Officer, U. of U. Environmental Health and Safety
