notes 2026–27 Season of Events

Welcome to the 2026–27 Season of Events! A message from the Dean of the Faculty of Music I am delighted to share with you the 2026–27 Season of Events with some of the over 600 events presented by the Faculty of Music during this academic year. Our outstanding students and faculty will produce a vast range of events, enriched by the participation of guest artists, composers, and researchers made possible by the individuals and foundations who provide generous support to the Faculty of Music. The 2026–27 season features many events designed to celebrate milestones in our history. In November, we celebrate the 100th birthday of our legendary voice teacher Mary Morrison with four days of concerts and masterclasses, including appearances by University of Toronto Music alumnae Measha Brueggergosman-Lee and Barbara Hannigan. Throughout the year, we mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of U of T Music’s opera program with the November premiere of a new opera, Fall River, composed by U of T Music alumna Cecilia Livingston and a March extravaganza with three acts from three of the most celebrated works in the operatic repertoire. In early April, we present Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to mark two bicentennials—the founding of the University of Toronto on March 15, 1827 and the death of Beethoven eleven days later—together with a composition by John Beckwith to mark the centennial of his birth. Alongside these milestone events are the typical exciting lineup of performances by our many ensembles, colloquium lectures by music educators, musicologists, ethnomusicologists and music theorists, the week-long Music Research Festival, and the 10-day New Music Festival. Throughout the year distinguished visitors join for short residencies, enriching the educational experiences of students across all degrees and programs through lectures, performances, and masterclasses. The 2026–27 season also brings the reopening of the MacMillan Theatre after undergoing transformative upgrades over the past two years. Large concerts and events will gradually return to MacMillan Theatre during the fall with a resumption of full activity in January. I encourage you to visit music.utoronto.ca/events to learn about additional events and to obtain more information on those featured in the 2026–27 Season of Events brochure. Please do return to our website throughout the coming months as many events are added while the academic year is in progress. I look forward to seeing you at a Faculty of Music event soon!

From its humble beginnings in Hart House Theatre in 1946, opera at the Faculty of Music has grown into the pre-eminent opera training program in the country. Along with Verdi, Puccini, and J. Strauss Jr., join us as we celebrate not only our eighty-year anniversary but the reopening of the magnificent, refurbished MacMillan Theatre.

Masters and servants, schemes and disguises, wit and romance— Mozart's operas delight in turning the social order upside down. Featuring scenes from some of his most beloved works, Class Acts celebrates the clever characters and sparkling music that make Mozart's operas timeless.

Conductors: Sandra Horst, Russell Braun Directors: Michael Patrick Albano, Mario Pacheco, Anna Theodosakis

Music Research Festival February 22–26, 2027 The Music Research Festival (MuRF) is an annual week-long series of free public events in celebration of music research and creation at the Faculty of Music, hosted by the Research & Partnerships Office (RPO) in collaboration with the Music Library. The festival highlights the innovative research and diverse creative practices occurring within and beyond the Faculty of Music. MuRF events spotlight researcher-creators at all stages: undergraduate and graduate students share emerging research through the Faculty of Music Library's Research Showcase (FOMRS) poster sessions; and faculty, staff, and postdoctoral research are explored via dedicated panels. Each Festival concludes with a capstone event celebrating the progressive researchcreation practices of our remarkable faculty and students. The Faculty's RPO provides support services to faculty, staff, and graduate students seeking internal and external funding to pursue their researchcreation and partnership goals. It is committed to promoting the research stories of our community; building capacity for research and creation; preparing emerging researchers and innovators for career success; and stewarding local and global partnerships. For more info, please visit music.utoronto.ca/research-creation or contact music.research@utoronto.ca.
