COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

“To share our humanity is what we’re here for.” - Judith Jamison In these increasingly complex and contentious times, it seems to get more and more difficult to connect with the world around us. Whether we’re caught up by our personal responsibilities, or feeling separated by political ideology and social pressures, it can seem that we are each increasingly becoming islands in turbulent waters. For our students and our larger community, the UofSC Department of Theatre and Dance strives to provide the connection we’ve been missing. From opening our eyes and hearts to new points of view, to stretching our perceived limitations, to simply providing an opportunity to share great performances with fellow audience members... the art produced on our stages has the power to bring us all together and, hopefully, make positive change. In the following pages, you will find outstanding theatre and dance performances that we hope will fulfill that promise. Our upcoming theatre season offers a host of not-to-be-missed events, including theatrical hits (Shakespeare in Love, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), brilliant works from new voices (The Wolves, The Revolutionists), and timeless classics (Waiting for Godot, Platonov). Meanwhile, our dance season will showcase the balletic brilliance of legendary dance artists like George Balanchine (Serenade and the Ballet Stars of New York Gala Performance), while continuing to forge new choreographic ground with brand new works from our faculty. We hope you will be here to share in every experience.

Based on the screenplay by MARC NORMAN & TOM STOPPARD Adapted for the stage by LEE HALL With Music by PADDY CUNNEEN Directed by ANDREW SCHWARTZ In this stage adaptation of the Oscar®-winning film, penniless and struggling young playwright William Shakespeare is tormented by writer’s block until he meets the beautiful Viola de Lesseps. Under the veil of secrecy, Will and Viola’s passionate love affair becomes the basis of the very play he is writing – Romeo and Juliet. With opening night – and the wedding day – fast approaching, will it all work out in the end or are the two star-crossed lovers destined for tragedy? “A swooning delight.” – Daily Mail

Written by ANTON CHEKHOV Adapted and Directed by STEVEN PEARSON This first, originally untitled farce by influential playwright Anton Chekhov was never published in his lifetime. Finding himself on a downward spiral fueled by lust and alcohol, disillusioned schoolteacher Mikhail Platonov proudly lives by the credo “speak ill of everything.” Platonov’s cynical wit and world-weariness belie a charisma that proves irresistible to the opposite sex, leading him into a tangled - and dangerous web of love and deceit. “…a buoyantly tragic farce with a hero who combines the…vigour of Don Juan with the moral hesitancy of Hamlet.” – The Guardian

Written by SARAH DELAPPE Directed by LINDSAY RAE TAYLOR A 2017 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves charges fiercely onto the stage to reveal a brutally honest portrait of adolescent life on a high school girls’ soccer team. You’re a fly-on-the-goal as you witness the nine talented teammates warm up throughout their season, maneuvering through increasingly challenging obstacles both on and off the field. “…a delightful meditation on society, sex, and soccer... [DeLappe] offers us ninety minutes in a smart, sympathetic, female world. – The Village Voice

Based on the novel by MARK HADDON Adapted by SIMON STEPHENS Directed by ROBERT RICHMOND A critically-acclaimed, multiple-Tony® winner, Curious Incident has been hailed as “a phenomenal combination of storytelling and spectacle” (The Times) “a testament to the singular power of theatre” (Vogue). In this stage adaptation of the best-selling novel, a math savant on the autism spectrum becomes consumed with finding the killer of his neighbor’s dog. He soon finds that fingers are pointing at him as the suspect, setting him off on a daunting odyssey that turns his entire world upside down.

“…be prepared to have all your emotional and sensory buttons pushed, including a few you may have not known existed.” – The New York Times

Directed by DAVID BRITT and LOGAN DAVIES Get double the laughs with TWO of Tony-Award winning playwright Christopher Durang’s most outlandish short comedies! In FOR WHOM THE SOUTHERN BELLE TOLLS, Durang’s twisted send-up of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, a fading Southern belle tries to set up her neurotic, cocktail stirrer-obsessed son with an outlandish “feminine caller.” In the absurdist WANDA’S VISIT, the lives of a bored married couple are turned upside down by the unexpected guest from hell. “Durang is manic and heartbroken…a comedian whose fury takes the form of farce.” - The New Yorker

Written by MARINA CARR Directed by CONOR GALLAGHER Set in the ghostly landscape of the bogs of Ireland, BY THE BOG OF CATS traces the desperate journey of a woman fighting for respect in the face of a lover’s abandonment and a society that derides her lineage. This haunting adaptation of Euripides’ Medea mixes mysticism and hard-hitting modern realism to weave a riveting tale of betrayal, sacrifice, and vengeance. “Filled with richly symbolic dialogue…a tragic drama sprinkled with colorful characters and pure Irish humor.” – ChicagoCritic.com Adult themes and language. May not be appropriate for children.

Written by DAVID LINDSAY-ABAIRE Directed by ALLIE ANDERSON This outrageous comedy by Pulitzer-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is a trip you’ll never forget! After Cass discovers a dirty secret about her husband, she runs away to Niagara Falls, hoping to find a life that’s passed her by. Her soul-searching adventure quickly goes over the edge as she encounters a succession of eccentric fellow travelers, including a suicidal alcoholic, a lonesome tour boat captain, and a pair of bungling, bickering private detectives. “Wild and crazy. David Lindsay-Abaire delights in the demented.” - Associated Press Adult themes and language. May not be appropriate for children.

Written by LAUREN GUNDERSON Directed by MARYBETH GORMAN CRAIG Presented in rep with WAITING FOR GODOT

History becomes “herstory” as a disparate band of courageous women find themselves working together in a shared fight for liberté, égalité, and sororité during the French Revolution. This funny, fresh, and irreverent comedy brings the past into sharply relevant focus in a story that boldly explores how art and activism can intersect to make history.

show.” ly accomplished “..an astounding Journal-Constitution - Atlanta

Written by SAMUEL BECKETT Directed by STEVEN PEARSON Presented in rep with THE REVOLUTIONISTS

Beckett’s existential masterwork is at once hilarious and profoundly moving in its portrayal of two vagabonds, Vladimir and Estragon, who spend their days together questioning, theorizing, arguing, laughing, and consoling…all while eternally awaiting the arrival of the enigmatic figure Godot. “…a portrait of the dogged resilience of a man’s spirit in the face of little hope.”– The New York Times
