USC Dance Company 2017-18 Season Brochure

Page 1

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR With brand new creations, renowned masterpieces, and great classics, this season’s repertoire is sure to excite our audience and highlight the versatility, technical brilliance and dramatic flair of our nationally recognized young artists. Our 2017-18 Season is going to be our best. We are thrilled to announce that this season the USC Dance Company will collaborate on three occasions with the USC School of Music. Under the direction of Cormac Cannon, we will be performing at the “Dancing with the Stars” half-time show at Williams-Brice on September 23. Cormac will also conduct the USC Symphonic Wind ensemble when they perform with us on our November Concert. In April, we have been invited to perform as part of the Bernstein MASS, under the direction of Ellen Schlaefer. This monumental production is in honor of the 100th birthday celebration of Leonard Bernstein. Some faculty highlights: Tanya Wideman Davis received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor. Stacey Calvert continues her brilliant work as Distinguished Artist-in-Residence with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. Stephanie Milling and Thaddeus Davis both received major grants from the Provost Office for continued research in dance. We welcome back Miriam Barbosa, former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, who will be a guest artist-in-residence for the Fall term. This year, we welcome to the dance faculty Olivia Anderson Waldrop, who recently received her MFA from UC-Irvine, as well as Susan Dabney Hancock, former LA Classical Ballet dancer, who will head up the USC Dance Conservatory and teach in the dance program. This year will mark our 13th year hosting the Ballet Stars of New York Gala Performance, Columbia’s premiere dance event directed by Stacey Calvert, which features our students performing exquisitely alongside Principal Dancers from The New York City Ballet. Each year the incredible USC Board of Dance works tirelessly through this event, raising scholarship funds to attract stellar dance majors from across the US. We currently have 55 dance majors on scholarships who have previously trained at prestigious conservatories and magnet schools from 18 different states. As a Professor and Director of Dance at the University of South Carolina, I have been fortunate to design, teach, and create much of the essential curriculum used in the dance program. I am glad to say I never looked back! Now, USC has over 80 dance courses with a BA in Performance/Choreography, we offer licensing for K-12 Dance Education, our program is nationally recognized as one of the “top three to consider for classical training for non-conservatory programs” (Dance Magazine), and we have recently received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Dance. I have personally taught over 12,000 dance students and USC Dance Program has taught over 100,000 university students. With a great deal of pride and joy I sign off.
