USC Dance Company Season 2016-17

Page 1

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR It gives me great pleasure to welcome our new Chair for Theatre and Dance, Robert Richmond, and our new Associate Chair, Head of Dance Education Dr. Stephanie Milling. Congratulations to our senior dance majors, the majority of whom have dance jobs next year! Speaking of USC alumni, Olivia Anderson, who recently obtained an MFA in Dance, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of California at Irvine, has been hired as the new Administrative Director of the USC Dance Conservatory and the SC Summer Dance Program. We also welcome Mindy Rawlinson, who is currently pursuing an MFA in Dance at prestigious Hollins University, as Junior Company Director for USCDC. This year’s USCDC season promises to be a beautiful blend of world premieres and traditional favorites. Our 2016-17 season begins with the centerpiece Ballet Russes masterwork, Firebird, which I am excited to restage after the choreography of Michel Fokine. It promises to be a captivating piece that features luscious and haunting music by Igor Stravinsky. The concert will also feature a world premiere by USC ballet instructor Madeline Jazz Harvey and, of course, an iconic work by artistic genius George Balanchine, restaged by Associate Artistic Director Stacey Calvert. In February, Thaddeus Davis (a recently tenured Associate Professor) will direct the USC Dance Company with a new work by gifted choreographer and Assistant Professor Tanya-Wideman Davis. Our guest choreographer this season will be Bryan Arias, Founder of the Arias Company and recipient of First Place and Audience Choice awards at the Sixth Copenhagen International Choreography Competition. I am delighted to present as part of our season several exceptional events that will be beneficial to our entire dance community. This March the globally famous and revolutionary company, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, will be in residence at the University of South Carolina. Guest choreographer Bryan Arias and our own Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman-Davis are all former company members. We are also excited to announce Thaddeus and Tanya’s company, Wideman/Davis Dance, will tour USC’s branch campuses in the near future to perform Ruptured Silence: Racist Symbolism and Signs, a new media and dance performance that examines contemporary perspectives about the confederate flag and challenges the usage of discriminatory practices through movement. USC Dance Company will also continue its prestigious collaboration with the New York City Ballet, hosting Ballet Stars of New York, a one-night event that presents the gorgeous work of George Balanchine, restaged by Associate Artistic Director Stacey Calvert. This tradition, which gives our dance majors a major opportunity to dance alongside some of the best professionals in the field, is guaranteed to be a sold-out treat! Finally, the fall and spring semesters will culminate in the presentation of two student choreography showcases. The fall concert, directed by Cindy Flach in conjunction with Thaddeus Davis, will contain pieces developed in an advanced-level dance composition course that encourages students to approach dance with their own artistic voices. The spring performance will showcase the artistic excellence of our senior choreographers. With both innovative creations and celebrated classics, the repertoire will enliven local and regional audiences as well as highlight the huge capabilities of our world-class artists. Our 2016-17 season is going to be outstanding!
