LIFELONG LEARNING CENTRE Learn to Live and Live to Learn Lifelong Learning Centre courses expand your mind and help you remain active with likeminded people. Daytime courses provide retired, semi-retired and those working part-time, with an opportunity to participate in a warm and supportive learning environment, embrace alternative concepts, and meet interesting people. Evening and Saturday courses allow those who are working during the day an opportunity to learn about a variety of topics and interests in a stimulating environment where frontiers of knowledge are expanded and friendships are made.

LLC courses are affordable and have no previous education requirements. They also have no exams or assignments, and most have no homework.

“When telling people about my plans, a surprising number say retirement scares them: “I don't know what I'll do with myself!” To them I reply, “Check out the Lifelong Learning Centre!”

Taking courses for pure enjoyment is one of the greatest pleasures anyone can have.

VOLUNTEER & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS ABORIGINAL GRANDMOTHERS CARING FOR GRANDCHILDREN SUPPORT NETWORK

Grandmothers caring for grandchildren are invited to monthly Support Network meetings to celebrate their strengths, share experiences, talk about issues of concern, and learn about community services and programs. Tea and bannock are always served at monthly meetings.

The Lifelong Learning Centre has speakers available to talk to community groups and professionals about the joys of lifelong learning and volunteering, ageism and Age-Friendly Community Initiatives, older adult abuse prevention, retirement planning and much more. EARLY YEARS OF THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA – NEW

This course will take you on a journey back to the early years of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). We will explore how and why the NFB began and its influence on filmmaking in Canada.

Throughout this journey we will reflect on our own personal relationship with The Board, from our first encounter with NFB films and videos to the present day. The goal of this course will be for students to understand the scope of what the NFB has to offer and how it influences our way of seeing Canada.

IMPROVISATION CIRCLES – PLAY AND LEARN TOGETHER – NEW A recreational Improv Circle is a facilitated, relaxed, light-hearted, failure-free, and friendly social construct for having fun together. By playing improv games like “passing around an imaginary energy ball,” or “composing proverbs each person one-word-at-a-time,” or just “making stuff up” in sketches, we create opportunities to embrace the moment ourselves and to delight in the spontaneity and resourcefulness of others. Games and sketches are energetic and mood-lifting community experiences.

Laughter is guaranteed. Playing can inspire joy, a sense of well-being, self-confidence and creativity.

Participants are invited to share their reflections on how improv opportunities arise in everyday life.

Information will also be shared about local and national improvisation activities, particularly in academic settings. Bring your imagination, comfortable clothing, indoor footwear and a smile.

STAND-UP COMEDY 101 (SIDE A)

Whether you just enjoy stand-up or would like to be a stand-up, whatever your goals, this course will focus on stand-up comedy as an art. Students will receive guidance and have fun writing and performing stand-up comedy in a safe workshop environment. This course may also be of interest to professionals looking to enhance their public speaking skill set through the use of comedy. THE MEDICI AND THE GLOBAL WORLD, C. 1500-1700 – NEW

We often associate the Medici with art, and specifically with art made in Florence during the Renaissance. We do that for good reasons. However, this series of four lectures adds something new to the mix: the global world. The Medici collected objects from Asia, the Americas, Africa, and exported artworks well beyond Europe. For example, the altar for the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem was made in Florence, under the Medici aegis in 1587, and the same happened a century later with the Monument to St. Francis Xavier for the church of Bom Jesu in Goa. This course will explore the Medici vis-à-vis the global world, highlighting how they conceived their patronage and identity as part of a large and complex cross-cultural network.

Learning to use a computer is simply one more skill to add to everything you already know how to do. Computer education classes are fun and can greatly enrich your everyday life. IPAD LEVEL 1: BEGINNER

iPads have revolutionized our interactions with each other and the world. Ageless Grace® Brain Health Fitness is a brain-body program based on stimulation of neuroplasticity to support cognitive health and activates all five primary functions of the brain. It helps to restore and maintain neural pathways and stimulates the creation of new ones. There are 21 tools of the program based on the cutting-edge concept of neuroplasticity - the ability of the brain to change structurally and functionally. Each tool addresses a primary factor commonly related to physical aging. The program is practiced in a chair, to challenge the brain to figure out how to do these activities seated rather than standing, while engaging the core muscles, and internal systems and organs of the body. This presentation will highlight the mandate of The Saskatchewan Privacy Office to protect patient privacy and will explain how and why your information is collected and used with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. The SHA is committed to protecting the accuracy, integrity and security of all health information and all employees are required to sign a pledge of confidentiality. It is important for patients to know their privacy rights and discover that privacy is not a barrier but is established to create protection. Come discover how to limit visitors and information sharing, the difference between a Health Proxy and Power of Attorney, patient and family rights in Medical Assistance in Dying, and the importance of having a family physician or nurse practitioner. Chinese for Beginners This course is suitable for learners without previous Chinese learning experience. Canada has committed to meeting the Paris Agreement target to hold global warming to 2 degrees Celsius or less. To achieve this goal, Canada and the world must reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to net-zero by mid-century. Join Dr. Dolter to learn about the challenge of getting to net-zero emissions and explore some of the policy options that government can use to encourage GHG emissions reduction, including carbon pricing, regulations, and incentive programs. Finally, an outline will be provided to understand how economists analyze climate change policy options and explain why many endorse carbon pricing as a cost-effective strategy for lowering GHG emissions.

DO PATIENTS HAVE A “RIGHT TO TRY”?

Join Dr. Amy Zarzeczny to explore regulation of experimental medical interventions. Experimental and unproven medical interventions often generate considerable excitement and high expectations from patients and their loved ones. They can also raise various issues including concerns about risks and tensions between individual autonomy-interests and regulatory responsibilities, among other challenges. The “Right to Try” movement, in which people seek early access to experimental pharmaceuticals, is one example that illustrates many of these tensions. This presentation will provide an opportunity to consider and discuss legal, ethical and policy questions raised by demands for unproven and experimental medical interventions.

GENERAL INFORMATION LIFELONG LEARNING CENTRE FEE SHARING OR WAIVING POLICY Fee sharing or waiving is available to make it possible for older adults to take LLC daytime courses regardless of income. Information is available upon request by calling Student Services Office at 306-585-5748.

WITHDRAWL POLICY Students who withdraw from a course more than 10 business days before the course start date will be charged an administrative fee of up to $25 unless the withdrawal is for medical or compassionate reasons. Those who withdraw less than 10 business days before the course begins or after it has started, will be charged the full course fee. Please note materials fees are non-refundable. Please see website for full policy and Withdrawal Form.

Students may transfer enrolment to another course offered in the same term without charge unless the new course has higher fee. Students also have the option of finding suitable substitute to take their place in the course.

PARKING AT COLLEGE AVENUE CAMPUS You can purchase a parking permit for unlimited parking during the fall term in the parking lot behind the College Building. Parking permits must be purchased in person from Student Services Office in Room 118. Hourly paid parking is available in Lot 20 using pay parking machines or cell phone app. After 5:00 pm and on weekends parking at the university is free. There is also free parking on College Avenue and other nearby streets weekdays and Saturdays with two-hour limit.
