Conservatory of Performing Arts The arts are a great way for children, teens and adults to build confidence, be social, learn self-discipline and get creative while having fun learning an instrument, developing acting skills or expressing themselves through visual arts.

Our performing and visual arts programs get students excited and passionate about the arts. Your child will learn from the highest quality instructors who will develop and nurture their creative and artistic skills.

Early Childhood and Children & Youth Programs We believe that engagement in fine arts is an essential piece in the healthy development of all young people. Our students have an enriching and fun time taking a wide range of programs from Kindermusik for newborns to theatre and choir for teens. Our group programs give students the opportunity to get creative with others their age and skill level.

Adult Programs Adults can enjoy several group programs such as campfire guitar, singing, drumming, dance, pottery and more. Our classes are fun and friendly, so join us and explore your passion for music and visual arts.

NEW AT THE CONSERVATORY CONSERVATORY CREATIVE PRESCHOOL We are pleased to announce our newest initiative: the Conservatory Creative Preschool. The Preschool will continue our long-standing tradition of offering leading arts education

programs to the Southern Saskatchewan community and augment our current suite of early learning courses.

As the Preschool begins its first year this fall, our instructors will supplement the curriculum recommended by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education by drawing on Conservatory resources including the pottery studio, access to instruments (violins, guitars, keyboards, percussion), painting and drawing, and dance studios to enrich the preschool experience and foster an early foundational love for the creative arts.

FIRST NATIONS ARTS This fall marks the return of our very popular Beginners Powwow dance class as well as the addition of a ribbon skirt class and beadwork class.

CREATIVE HOLIDAY PLAYTIME – fun for the whole family!

Spend some quality family time at the Conservatory. These playtimes are designed to encourage adults and children to create together and let their inner artists shine in the spirit of the holidays.

Early Childhood Programs KINDERMUSIK VILLAGE® (ages newborn-18 months) Village is for lap babies, crawlers and walkers. It incorporates the most current research on early childhood development and provides families a special place for learning and connecting with other parents and babies through music and movement.

FEATHERS

The musical poems of Woody Guthrie, bird songs and the naturally occurring sounds in nature help babies develop an early appreciation – and accelerated aptitude – for language, movement and music in this class.

Introduce your child to the basics of playing the violin or cello with the combination of a weekly half-hour individual and a weekly 45-minute group class for you and your child. String players who want to push themselves to reach musical excellence will enjoy working in this orchestra while studying music of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. SCOTTISH PIPE & DRUM Scottish piping and drumming is a unique and culturally rich musical style performed around the world. You DO NOT need to be Scottish to participate! Students learn both solo and band skills, while working as a team to improve the band.

The program’s goal is to help young players reach their musical potential in a supportive and fun learning environment. Instruction in bagpipes and snare and tenor/bass drums is based on Scotland’s Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board guidelines and on the long experience of the teaching staff in producing excellent musicians.

BEGINNER BAGPIPES OR DRUM (ages 8+)

It all starts here with a fun-loving approach to music. First-year students learn on a practice chanter if learning the bagpipes; or the practice pad if learning the drums.

Students learn to read music, grace note groups, basic music theory and a number of exercises and tunes. As well, students are exposed to what the CPA Pipe Band does – they get to meet and interact with the band members, engage in common activities and learn about the band before they start to play in it. CONSERVATORY OF PERFORMING ARTS (CPA) PIPE BAND

Once players have learned about six tunes, it’s time to get a set of bagpipes or move from the practice pad to the drums. New pipers/drummers are integrated into regular band play as often as possible, and students are given every chance to perform and compete with the band. Students learn basic marching and performance tunes appropriate for the Piping and Drumming Grade 4 level. They also prepare competition medleys each year. The CPA Pipe Band has Saskatchewan’s most experienced pipe band musicians as instructors and is the only youth pipe band in Regina!

Seniors’ University Group (SUG) The Seniors’ University Group mission is to promote the value and availability of lifelong learning opportunities for older learners in the community in a collaborative partnership with the Lifelong Learning Centre. The group was established in 1977 to work with the University of Regina to develop learning programs to enhance the quality of life for older adults living in Regina. Those wishing to receive SUG rates for LLC courses must be current members of the Seniors’ University Group.

SUG membership is open to those 50 years of age and over who pay the annual membership fee which is $30 for the year April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016. POLICIES ACCESSIBILITY POLICY

The Centre for Continuing Education has committed to make every possible physical accommodation in accordance with the U of R policy that may be required by its students and customers. Persons with physical disabilities are able to access the main floor of the College Building and accessible washrooms in the Conservatory through a ramp at the south side of the building. The Gallery Building also has a ramp leading into its front entrance on the north side of the building. Wheelchair parking is available at the south side of the Conservatory Building and in front of Darke Hall. Students with mobility concerns are encouraged to discuss accessibility needs when registering for classes.

Parking There are many options for parking at our campus: • LLC clients may purchase a semester parking pass at Student & Instructor Services (Non-Credit), Conservatory Bldg., Room 119.

• Metered parking on Ramsay Drive (North Side of campus) • Metered parking in LOT 21 (East Side of campus) • 2 hour street parking on College Avenue (North side of campus) • 2 hour street parking on Wascana Drive (West side of campus)

Accessibility Parking For those who require accessible parking, there are spots located at the back of the College Building next to the wheel chair ramp attached to the Conservatory Building.
