FROM THE DEAN The holiday season is upon us, and compared to a year ago, the world feels like a much more hopeful space. Having students back on campus this semester has been a refreshing reminder of why our work at the College of Business matters so much. We are helping our students to “own tomorrow”—for themselves, their community, and the betterment of all.

The story of Currency is the story we all have a hand in writing. That impact is evident in how our recent MBA cohort came together to honor classmate Stanley Hall’s memory. Our ability to endure a tragedy like Stanley’s untimely passing and to build from it something positive, like providing a scholarship to someone in need, speaks to the heart of the College of Business.

As you read through this issue of Currency, we encourage you to engage with us and contribute to our continuing story of transforming lives. Perhaps it’s making a gift to an endowment like the Stanley Hall Character Award. Maybe that investment into tomorrow is providing an internship opportunity to our students. Maybe it is something we have not yet had the imagination to consider. There is a wide range of ways to invest in the virtuous cycle we have strived to initiate at the College. Help us help our students own tomorrow.

The May graduate is preparing to start her journey towards a masters degree in Accountancy. Being named PCAOB Scholar is a validation of Elyse’s hard work and grit as an undergraduate.

The impact of this scholarship has additional resonance beyond acknowledging Elyse’s academic effort and excellence — she graduated summa cum laude with the Woodrow M. Strickler Leadership Award for Accountancy. As she was heading into her sophomore year, her family suffered a major blow. Elyse’s father was diagnosed with Stage 3 stomach cancer. The tragedy was compounded by her grandfather’s passing only a few months earlier.

Even as she took her father to treatment, Elyse continued to excel as an undergrad, eventually landing a financial planning internship with KFC her senior year. “My sister encouraged me to speak with them at [the College of Business] career fair,” says Elyse. “I gave them my resume and didn’t think anything of it…and then they brought me in!”

This internship helped open the door to a new graduate internship with the Internal Audit team at Yum! Brands. Moving from the relatively small team at KFC to its parent company has already given Elyse multiple opportunities to work with a variety of people and offers her a look into her future.

“Elyse exemplifies the best qualities of an accounting graduate, including outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and service,” says accountancy instructor Lisa Blum, LLM. As faculty advisor to Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor society, Professor Blum has been a mentor to Elyse. “I feel like [Professor Blum] has really taken me under her wing ever since I joined [the honor society]. She is such an incredible mentor…she is always there if I needed something—even when I had a question about my personal tax return, she was quick with an answer! I’m excited that she’s also teaching in the MAC program.” Along with Professor Blum, Elyse is also grateful for Dr. Bill Stout’s support. “Dr. Stout actually nominated me for the PCAOB. He encouraged me to apply, and I cannot say how much this award means to me.”

Elyse has found a passion in accounting. She hopes once she becomes a CPA, that a career in auditing is waiting for her. “I would love to stay with Yum! if they will have me. There’s so much room for growth here.” While opportunities at Yum! are appealing to Elyse, what’s as inspiring is Yum!’s commitment to diversity. Seeing women in leadership continues the narrative of mentors in Elyse’s life—from Lisa Blum to Elyse’s mother (who runs the family business, Smooth Finish Auto Collision Repair). “As a Latina, I’m going to have different experiences in the office. To see these strong, powerful ladies in these positions is so encouraging. I feel empowered. It makes me excited to be a mentor.”

ALEXUS MADDOX:

Ask Computer Information Systems (CIS) and Accountancy major Alexus Maddox what inspired her to explore a career in cyber security, and the answer is simple, “I wanted to work in a career where I felt like I was making every day count.”

Alexus’ passion for making a difference reflects both her commitment to academic excellence and building a better tomorrow for her community.

Alexus, while still in high school, got an early start in her career path as a Humana scholar.

As part of the Humana Scholars program, is Alexus guaranteed a job every summer until she

graduates, with the hopes of a job offer upon graduation. The scholarship—focused on Black student achievement—pays for her education. Her focus nearly from the start was cyber security.

“I really wanted to engage in computer science because it’s a subject I love,” says Alexus. “In cyber security… being able to protect people’s private information and preventing data breaches, means I get to help others.”

Her drive to change the community around her is reflected in her extra-curricular activity on campus where she serves as treasurer for both the American Association of University Women (AAUW)—UofL and the National Association of

FUTURE SECURITY Black Accountants (NABA), Greater Louisville Area. Both organizations are geared towards personal and professional development through advocacy, engagement, and education—with an eye to extending those opportunities to women and Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) students.

Being in a leadership role in each organization underscores a desire to not only be a member but to be an active participant. Advocating for one’s community means tomorrow’s leaders need to understand the stakes when it comes to having a seat at the table. “Being able to provide professional opportunities to all ethnicities

gives us something that we can call our own,” says Alexus. “[NABA] talks about financial literacy—which is really important for the Black community. It’s important for all of us to have access to these opportunities.”

entrenched in Louisville, while Cayton and Fee are transplants. Cayton moved to Goshen a few years ago and quickly became a fixture in his adopted hometown. From volunteering with the local humane society to being a fireman, his affection for Oldham County is palpable. “I love Oldham County. I feel like I’ve become ingrained in the community.”

All three are volunteer firefighters in Oldham County. Conrad is a fourth-generation firefighter whose family roots are rich and firmly

Oldham Brewing Company (OBC), a microbrewery with UofL connections, made its debut in Prospect, Kentucky this fall. The business was born from the collective passion of MBA student Steve Cayton, alum Brad Conrad (‘04), and

For OBC, the focus is on creating approachable beers—an accessible gateway to the world of microbrews. “John does a great job with the brewing because I feel like when you start talking craft beers, it can be really polarizing,” says Cayton. “He’s targeting a sweeter finish on most of our beers.”

PUTTING THE OLDHAM IN OBC Further underscoring a customer-focused drinking experience, OBC looks to fill the need for a local pub in Oldham County. As these plans began to take shape, Conrad connected OBC with GlenOaks Country Club. The club is in

Prospect, on the border of Jefferson and Oldham counties.

OBC offered GlenOaks a unique proposition—an in-house microbrewery that would serve both club members and the local community. With the country club looking to re-open and re-imagine club space post-pandemic, it’s a win-win for both OBC and GlenOaks. Managing partner/club owner (and UofL alum) Jamie Miller is excited about the partnership. “It’s likely to be one of the unique golf or country club experiences I know of…we are fully supportive and feel as though if OBC is successful, it can only help GlenOaks.”

brewing and bar staffing for OBC, while the microbrewery will provide the beer. “If you talk about mentors, I have leaned on Jamie and his experience,” says Brad Conrad. “We want to introduce people to our beers, but we also hope that people look to join GlenOaks.”

“This is a new venture for us, and I think it helps that UofL has a local investment in the people and community… there’s plenty of opportunity to learn from each other.” OBC also credits the Kentucky Guild of Brewers and Louisville nanobrewery Gallant Fox with advice and support.

An MBA for OBC

There’s a sense of solidarity that comes from being volunteer firefighters. It’s a bond born from a need to serve the community—offering support and assistance at people’s most vulnerable moments. As the fledgling microbrewery readies to open its doors and taps, there is a palpable

Even in his brief time at the College, both his faculty and cohorts were offering insights and suggestions for OBC’s launch. “I’m in microeconomics now, and I’m thinking about what we’re discussing in class and already working it [into OBC],” says Cayton.

excitement to serving the community differently; by becoming the watering hole (and brew) of choice for Prospect and beyond. “I feel like Oldham County just wants something like OBC that can be theirs,” says Cayton. “If you look at our logo, our Kentucky roots are there—it’s the lid of a bourbon barrel...for us [this is] ultimately about Oldham and brewing.”

ONLINE MBA STUDENT FROM TRANSPLANT TO ROOTED

DIANA ROBINSON

It was important to me to have a school that was not only offering online options but also had a history of brick-and-mortar degrees. I found the perfect combination in my backyard with [the University of Louisville],” shared Diana Robinson (she/her), president of the spring 2021 Online MBA cohort and Associate Director of Business Intelligence for Humana.

“I live here, I work here, and I want to see Louisville thrive. There are a plethora of options for Online MBAs and not all MBAs are created equal. I wanted a program that had a history of excellence. UofL’s online program is relatively new in comparison, but the track record of UofL...is undeniable.”

A transplant from northern Indiana, she “came here in 2000 and fell in love with this area.”

However, it was not just the city that led Robinson to establish roots in the community but her connection to a company at which she has been employed for over 20 years. “My career at Humana started as a temporary job until I finished my undergrad[uate degree] in Political Science. Once I graduated, I ended up staying with Humana for many reasons. It is very easy to get lost in a

company of over 40,000 associates, but all the departments I have been a part of for the last 21 years have made it more like a family.” The personal connection between Robinson and her collegues has made a profound impact on her life, with Robinson sharing that “two of my co-workers were even bridesmaids in my wedding.”

With her career evolving at Humana, Robinson recognized the need to elevate her knowledge and skills, and that an MBA earned through UofL would provide her with the ability to take her career to the next level. “One should never stop learning, whether formally in a university setting or informally by whatever means works for you.

I had progressed far at Humana but knew that I needed to continue my education to perform at a higher level. Real-world experience is priceless and one of the best teachers you could have; however, I knew that I needed to combine my real-world experience and add in a more formal structure for learning. My leader has always encouraged me to get my MBA, and it was the right time in my life and career to take on that challenge.”

“It’s not always easy to predict the future, despite the massive amounts of data and information we have available to us,” says Dr. Zac Goldman, Director for the Online MBA. “Instead, investing in a set of critical competencies and skillsets, along with developing a diverse professional network is needed to prosper even in the face of uncertainty.

UofL’s Online MBA program helps professionals do just that in a flexible, affordable, and studentcentered way.”

Reflecting on her plans for the future and how her MBA will aid her in reaching those goals, Robinson shared that, “My MBA will help me understand the bigger picture of how Humana works. I am learning financial impacts, different ways of understanding all the data I use and how to look at the big picture of business more holistically.”

A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY PARTNERS The College holds longstanding ties to the community through companies such as Humana, with their employees represented across each Online MBA cohort. Dr. Zac Goldman, Program Director for the Online MBA, shared his perspective on how this program best prepares those employees for roles as leaders of the future. “Humana is known for its dedication to innovation – the knowledge, skills, and experiences that [UofL] students acquire while earning their MBA online fosters entrepreneurial and creative mindsets that are needed to tackle complex and rapidly-evolving problems like those found in healthcare.”

UofL ALUMNUS RETURNS TO GIVE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS STUDENTS A LEG UP 14

Raymond Green, a Louisville native, UofL alumnus and former Cardinal Ambassador, has been named executive director of undergraduate programs for the College of Business. Green stepped into the newly created position following a six-year run as principal of Central High School.

The executive director of undergraduate programs position was created to support the success of all students in the college, with particular focus on first-generation and Pelleligible students. In his new role, Green will mentor current and prospective students throughout their UofL experience to ensure successful completion of an undergraduate degree and entry into the workforce or a graduate program. UofL News had the chance to talk to Green about his return to campus and his objectives in the new role.

UofL News: Tell us about your path to UofL … and back?

Raymond Green: I was born and raised in Louisville. I love the city and our region. I went to Central High School, where I did really well in music. I had a couple of scholarship opportunities around the state, one being at the University of Louisville, which is where I did my undergraduate studies. I had a great time as an undergraduate in the UofL School of Music, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in music education.

From there, I started teaching in the Jefferson County Public Schools at Central High School and Seneca High School. Then my wife and I decided we wanted to move to Houston, Texas.

We lived in Houston for a year and we learned there are two seasons in Houston: summer and January.

So, we moved back to Louisville. My principal at the time saw something in me and encouraged me to pursue my master’s in administration – and my wife encouraged me to do that as well.

So I earned my master’s degree in education administration from the UofL College of Education and Human Development.

Immediately I got a job as assistant principal at Meyzeek Middle School, where I spent three years. Then the principalship at Central High School – my alma mater – came open. I won that job and was principal at Central for six years. I had a lot of great experiences and was able to do a lot of great things there.

Then this opportunity at UofL came along to work at the College of Business leading the undergraduate program. It’s been a great journey from Central as a student to Central as principal and now back to the University of Louisville.

UofL is a special place. It is, as Neeli says, a great place to work, learn, and invest. I think that has always been true, but she was wise enough as our president to conceptualize it. More importantly, the university changes lives; education changes lives. It did that for me and now I want to be able to do that for other young people.

UofL News: What did you learn from your time at Central and Meyzeek that will help you guide students to and through UofL? Raymond Green: Dr. Mooradian, our dean, is a great visionary. I think it is a brilliant move on WINTER 2022

his part to hire a high school principal from the public school system – whether it was me or someone else – to oversee undergraduate programs. We want to ensure that our firstgeneration students have access, opportunity, and support. We want to make sure that our Pell-eligible students have access, opportunity, and support. Coming from the public K-12 world, I know first-hand the challenges and hurdles that first-gen and Pell-eligible students will have.

From the university side, we can start to build systems and programs that will remove barriers and seek to identify talented students who just need a shot. Who is the kid that just needs an opportunity and, once we give them that opportunity, is going to shine like the sun?

UofL News: What do you hope to accomplish first as executive director of undergraduate programs in the College of Business?

Raymond Green: I want to talk to the students – listen to the students – and talk to the faculty.

As a principal, I was at my best when I listened to the students and the faculty. That leadership lesson applies here as well, particularly being brand new to higher ed. My job first and foremost is to serve the students. Secondarily – maybe 1-A – is to serve the faculty. If I do that, the learners will win.

The first thing I want to do is ask, ‘How can we support you? You picked us and we picked you.

How can we support you to graduation? How can we support you to find a career that you are going to be passionate about and going to be successful in and thrive?’

Once I feel I have a good handle on that, we will start building out programs to increase our diversity and our enrollment into the College of Business.

UofL News: How do you plan to help firstgeneration and Pell-eligible students navigate the social and academic challenges of attending college?

Raymond Green: We had a great opportunity at Central High School for the last two years where we piloted a program called the Cardinal Bridge Academy, where we looked for students who knew they wanted to study business at the university, particularly seniors in high school.

Then we offered them the CIS 205 course – one of the first courses every business student takes – as a dual credit course online. Once the student successfully passed that course, that counted as their admission to the university. There are many students who have a 3.5 GPA and a subpar ACT score, but by completing this course, they just demonstrated that they can do collegiate level work at a high level. To us in the College of Business, that is enough. We are not going to let the ACT be a barrier to admission.

It’s recruiting and admissions; it’s also advising and job placement. And if not job placement, then I know Vernon Foster wants them in the MBA program, so my job is to go get kids, make sure we support them while they are here, and then guide them to a great job or a great path to the MBA program.

We want to take this program, the Cardinal Bridge Academy, that has proven to be successful at Central and expand it to other schools and even surrounding counties. I believe we are sitting on a surplus of talent and we want to say, ‘Where is that talent, who are the children who need a shot?’ I wouldn’t be where I am today without higher education and I firmly believe that higher education is the ticket.

UofL News: What else would you like to share?

Raymond Green: I am humbled, I am thrilled, I am honored to join the university in this capacity.

I believe in the leadership of our president; I believe in the leadership of our dean and I believe the University is going in a great direction right now. Our best days are ahead of us.

UofL News: What will be key in getting every student across the stage with a diploma?

Raymond Green: A few things. One is community.

Students need community, a sense of belonging, a sense of ownership, a sense that, ‘I belong here.

I am a Cardinal business student.’ I think back to my time as an undergraduate. I was so proud to be part of the tuba studio in the School of Music.

There was a lot of identity baked into that.

It’s also important that we have academic acceleration and academic support for our students. We need to make sure we provide an

John Merchant is more than content to make an impact in the background, but those who work with him know being named a Cardinal Spirit Award recipient was long overdue. “He has not only been here, he has made himself available to help me and others I know, in every way possible to get our teaching and other responsibilities done efficiently and effectively,” said Associate Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship Bob Myers. “John has a wealth of knowledge, and he shares it in such a gracious and pleasant way. I am proud to call him a colleague and friend.”

John started at the College in the late ’80s working with the Bureau of Economic Research.

“The economists were contracted to study the future of the local economy. For four or five years, I was building databases and running regressions [for the professors].” John was already miles ahead of the College when it came to working with computers—at the time, the systems on campus were a far cry from the integrated network of today. Little by little, professors and other staff started to come to John for their computing needs. “My boss at the time [economics professor Dr. John Nelson] told me to help [the professors] as much as I could.” Several years (and deans) later, the College formalized a contract which ultimately saw John transition from working with the Bureau to working for UofL.

AWARD-WINNING SUPPORT John’s current title is Director of IT Services at the College, but his work is far from limited to IT. In many ways, his support role extends to everything from running A/V for events in the PNC Horn Auditorium to shooting MBA student professional headshots to operating the latest technology for the College faculty, the integrated media’s lightboard. An illuminated glass chalkboard, the lightboard allows professors to face their students while recording video lectures for online classes.

“It’s a great tool for our faculty as it helps them keep eye contact with their audience. There are just some concepts our professors are always teaching. Recording them here gives our students an additional resource. It’s another way we can reach out to them—especially

with the pandemic and online classes.” Being a support resource has meant that John has been in the office throughout most of the pandemic, ensuring the essential tech operations were working while the rest of the College was working from home.

SPIRIT OF SUCCESS His ability to offer support while wearing numerous hats has made him indispensable to every unit on campus. “He’s the Fifth Beatle of the [Communications and Marketing] department,” says graphic designer Jill Wegenast. “John’s like our very own George Martin—doing all the things which allow us to be a successful team.”

Even as he reflects on being a Cardinal Spirit Award recipient, he is still humble and unassuming to his impact. “I just got an email from [UofL President Neeli Bendapudi] about being named a Cardinal Student Champion. It’s some campus-wide thing,” laughs John. “I don’t really work with the students, but, well… it’s very nice for them to mention me.” The voice trails off, eager to talk about building upgrades or new classroom technology awaiting students this fall.

For John, it’s not about the spotlight—instead, it’s about lighting the way for others at the College of Business.

“To know Stanley Hall was to love him.” Through tears, that’s the loving summary Corinne Coulter gives of her son. He was a dedicated, passionate member of the Cardinal community and of the first cohort to pursue a fully online MBA (OMBA) at UofL. In September of 2020, Stanley Hall passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and hard work. at just 36 years old, Stanley Hall lived a lifetime of experiences. Originally from Providence, Kentucky, he relocated to Louisville to pursue a career in athletics. “He wanted the moon, and he was shooting for it,” Corinne says.

Before his passing, Stanley was appointed Facility Operations Manager in Athletics at UofL. He handled facility and game operations for various sports facilities, as well as managed ACC and NCAA game day events.

“It was one of his dream jobs. He was so excited,” Corrine reflects.

While moving up in his career, Stanley was also advancing his education. “We were the first class for the OMBA, and that came with many challenges and struggles, as well as wins and achievements, but we did them together,” says Brittany Key, classmate and Director of Development at the College.

The cohort was shocked when Stanley passed away. To pay homage to their classmate and a larger-than-life presence, they established the Stanley Hall Character Endowment Award.

“An endowment is the opportunity for the following classes to learn about Stanley and the character that was instilled in him,” Brittany says.

“We wanted to pass along that spirit and keep it alive in the OMBA program.”

The award will be given each year to an online MBA student, selected by their peers, who embodies Stanley’s spirit. Stanley was known for being compassionate and giving; he was a comforting presence who always looked out for others. Award winners will exemplify these traits.

Corinne takes pride in the legacy Stanley leaves behind. “How many parents can actually say their child had lived a life and shown so much love and kindness?” she says. “I know these people love my child because if they didn’t, they wouldn’t have come up with this award…I was proud always, but to know that he touched so many people—it gives me so much joy in my heart.”

ACCELERATING LIVES AND BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES The mission of the University of Louisville is to educate and serve our community through teaching a diverse array of people to develop engaged citizens, to practice and apply research, and engage in service that seeks to improve the quality of life locally and globally.

The students in the College of Business at the University of Louisville are the future workforce for the City of Louisville, the Kentuckiana region, and beyond. The concepts, knowledge, skills, and social capital that they develop during their time as students will set their trajectory for the rest of their lives.

These experiences will serve to enhance our students’ ability to become better citizens, better leaders, and better business professionals. More importantly, we can give students the tools that they need to improve the lives of their families, breaking through systemic disadvantages to build thriving communities.

At the College of Business, we recognize how critical coaching, mentoring, and adequate support services are for at risk and firstgeneration college students. The following initiative, CAPS (Connections, Analytics, Pride, Support), outlines our plans to support and

amplify our ability to improve student graduation and post-graduation success rates.

Through our CAPS Program, we aim to achieve the following: • I ncrease our six-year graduation rate from 69% to 82.5% • Improve first to second year retention • I ncrease access to teaching and learning resources for students and faculty • I mprove connections with local, regional, and national corporate partners • I ncrease opportunities for mentoring with alumni and other professionals •R educe financial barriers to degree completion through scholarship and emergency aid MAKE A GIFT The philanthropic support of our donors and corporate partners provides the margin of excellence that enhance our programs above and beyond what tuition covers.Our goal for this program is to raise an additional $500,000 per year to support our students and their success. Kent Oyler joined the College of Business in early 2021 as an Executive-in-Residence. “We are incredibly excited to have Kent join our team,” said Dean Todd Mooradian. “His in-depth knowledge of both the College of Business and the Louisville business community will deepen and expand our partnerships, help us better serve our city and region, and connect our students to opportunities and insights combining classroom learning with business practice.” We sat down with Kent to talk about his first year here at UofL. Currency: How did you become an Executivein-Residence at the College of Business? What is the core focus of your role?

Kent Oyler: I’ve served on the Board of Advisors for many years and chaired the College’s new strategic goals committee. When I retired from GLI, The Metro Chamber, Dean Mooradian figured he could bring me on to drive more employer partnerships. I agreed, and I’m having a ball sharing our incredible progress and capabilities. I also bring the needs of employers back into the College, so our

students are prepared for the work world upon graduation.

Currency: How have you bridged the College of Business with the local business community?

Kent Oyler: I find face-to-face meetings the most effective way to connect with business leaders. So far, I’ve developed over 70 employer relationships, many of which are already resulting in internships, hiring interest, capstone projects, executive education engagements, and faculty consultations. My most pleasant surprise has been how eager employers are to engage with us once they hear what the College of Business can do to help them.

Currency: What goal are you working towards at the College? How can others help?

Kent Oyler: I am working to position the College with employers as this region’s premier source for business and managerial talent. We are already the largest when it comes to hiring business talent or pursuing continuing education; I also want us to be the first school that comes to mind.

FALL 2021 CAREER FAIR

Returning to campus for the first College of Business career fair in over 18 months meant not just a chance to learn about potential job opportunities but underscored the importance of networking. The Ulmer Center has had four virtual fairs in the past year—October was the first inperson event since February 2020.

“We’ve had a lot more activity than I expected— even more than some previous job fairs—which has been great,” says Stephanie Williams, director of tax compliance for Ventas, a health care real estate company. “I love that we are back [on campus].”

The career fair saw 45 employers come to the Swain Student Activities Center, including 14 first-time companies such as Aflac, Republic Finance, and Confluent Health, joining returning companies such as YUM! Brands, GE, and Ventas.

UofL senior Terrell Williams (accounting) currently interns with Ventas and spent the afternoon at their table giving a first-person perspective to prospective students. He was excited to share his story with those looking to jumpstart their careers. “Getting that real-world experience working with [Ventas] has been very beneficial…all of this [has] been very enjoyable!”

The importance of in-person networking was not lost on the students, either. “Here, you can talk to everyone and stay as long as you like. I feel like I can explore my options,” says sophomore Arielle Dixon.

Economics major Jacob Bullock (senior) spent the afternoon getting familiar with the range of employers at the career fair. “I’m looking for an internship to get my foot in the door…being able to see all these businesses here helps remind me to keep an open mind because there could be opportunities here that I could really love doing.”

After nearly 19 months of mostly remote work, virtual classes, and online events, the Center for Free Enterprise decided to offer in-person programming again this fall. And going by attendance at the first talk, students and the community were ready for the change.

A presentation by New York Times bestselling author Amity Shlaes was the first CFE program of the semester. Shlaes also serves as chairman of the board of trustees for the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation and presidential scholar 32

at The King’s College (in New York City). Her talk brought in more than 125 attendees. An additional off-site luncheon with Shlaes attracted nearly 40 local business executives.

“We’re thrilled to be back in person with our events,” said Steve Gohmann, director of the Center. “The opportunity for students to have face-to-face interaction with the speakers, faculty, and their peers is just so valuable.”

Gohmann’s thoughts were echoed by students who attend CFE programs, like senior economics and political science major Julianna Sims. “Last

year, I was happy that we were still able to have events, but because they were virtual, there was a lack of connection with others. As a senior this year, it is exciting to see my classmates and professors back in action and back in person.”

“I am glad that CFE events are back in person because it enables me to talk and share ideas with others sitting around me. It is a big help to be able to converse with my peers.”

BOB MYERS

A LEGACY OF MENTORSHIP

Fifty-five years in the service of students is a testament to Bob Myers’ commitment to both the classroom and the University of Louisville.

The Associate Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship has seen the College of Business grow from thirteen people at their unit-wide meeting in the 1970s to over 150 faculty and staff today.

Six College deans have served terms during Myers’ career. He has been an assistant dean, a department chair, served on numerous community and nonprofit boards, but most importantly he has inspired generations of students. Bob is a storyteller, a trusted voice, and generous beyond measure. He embodies the College of Business and a true foundation that tomorrows are born from—just ask anyone who has spent time under his learning tree.

FROM MENTORSHIP TO SCHOLARSHIP Alum Don Snow (‘77) is one of the many who was inspired by Myers’ teaching. “Bob was one of those instructors who truly motivated me,” says Snow.

After serving in the Army, Snow had come back to school to build a career in IT. He was working full-time while earning his degree at UofL, and Bob Myers’ dedication to both students and the work has stayed with Snow well into his professional career. “I still remember the enthusiasm [Bob] had for the work and to see us succeed. [I felt like] he understood where I was coming from [balancing school] with a young family and a job.”

Myers’ mentorship and wisdom meant so much to Snow that he was moved to honor his legacy and work. In the spirit of providing opportunities to those in need, Don Snow has established a scholarship in Bob Myer’s name. The scholarship

will go to an incoming freshman demonstrating financial need—offered with preference to a female student. These funds will stay with the student until they graduate from the College of Business. “My wife Carolyn and I talked about what establishing this endowment meant to us,” says Snow. Beyond honoring Professor Myers and providing an opportunity to an incoming student, the Snow family saw it as an opportunity to connect with others. “I hope [fellow alumni] will join us in growing this endowment.”

This gift speaks to the virtuous cycle that is at the heart of the College. It is synonymous with Myers’ drive to better the lives of those around him. While Snow’s generous scholarship speaks volumes to how Bob Myers has touched his life, Snow is just one of a choir of former students (not to mention professional peers) who echo a similar refrain— their lives were made better and more whole by time spent in Bob Myers’ presence.

“We are excited and honored to see a scholarship named for Bob Myers,” says Dean Todd Mooradian. “Bob’s dedication to his students and the University is second to none. His ongoing committment has lasted for years and will now last in perpetuity. Faculty have the ability to change the lives of students for the better. Bob Myers is a testimony to that great endeavor. In fact, I believe Bob is the epitome of a passionate teacher impacting the world through the lives of students.”

FROM SCHOLARSHIP TO LEGACY For Bob, the accolade is not lost on him; however, he is quick to offer praise and credit to others.

What really matters to him is the connections made and conversations shared. These elements are the keys to his longevity at UofL. “In all my years here, I’m truly grateful for the friends I’ve made, and the students who have kept in touch [with me].”

College of Business alum Beth Wiseman (’80, MBA ’87) was the keynote speaker and representative of the Ulmer Family Scholarship; the award was established by the Ulmer family in early 2021 for College of Business undergraduate students. Mrs. Wiseman spoke of the pride she and her family have in UofL and empowering students of all backgrounds to achieve an education. “Dad [Daniel C. Ulmer, Jr. (‘55)] and I believe everyone should have an opportunity, to make a contribution, to solving complex problems we face in our community.”

Over 100 students and 73 scholarships and awards were celebrated during the event, highlighting the impact donors to the College of Business make on students’ lives.

Dereck Barr-Pulliam, assistant professor in the School of Accountancy, and his co-author team were awarded a Center for Audit Quality (CAQ) Access to Audit Personnel Grant for 2021.

Isabel Botero, associate professor of practice, Management & Entrepreneurship, received the Wittener Institut für Familienunternehmen (WIFU) best contribution to practice award at the annual IFERA - International Family Enterprise Research Academy conference.

Abigail Koenig, assistant professor of practice, Management & Entrepreneurship, has been working on a project for the past year, supporting health literacy for the community of Louisville’s 3rd District. This has culminated into a partnership between several academics at the University of Louisville and community partners — The Public Health Literacy Advisory Group. They were awarded a $250,000 grant through the Humana Foundation to continue this work.

Mrs. Mary E. Stone

Joseph Dorilio, 21, formerly of Montgomery, IL, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2021. He was born on January 11, 2000, to parents Donna and John Dorilio. Joe graduated from Oswego High School in 2018 and had been attending the University of Louisville, pursuing a Marketing degree. He loved sports, especially basketball, camping, swimming, working out, and spending time with his friends and family.

Joe is survived by his parents, Donna and John Dorilio; his sister, Danielle; his grandmother, Gail; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Jack; grandfather, Joseph; grandmother, Helen; and cousin, Tyler.

As Joseph was set to graduate this winter, he will be posthumously awarded his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing at Commencement.
