TODDA.MOORADIAN Every day, I am inspired by the ways your College of Business prepares students for the real world. The College is in the business of creating professionals who will be successful in their chosen field and will have all the tools and the vision to change the world for the better.

As we prepare our students for those leadership roles to which they aspire, we must ground them not only in the tactics, tools, and theories of business management, we must ground them in a fundamental appreciation for others. No one can lead but that they respect, reinforce, and nurture the potential and the contributions of others — others who are like them, and others who are different.

The university setting is often the first time many of us encounter and work closely with peers from markedly different backgrounds and experiences. It is our responsibility and our great pleasure as educators and mentors, to use those experiences to help our students understand that diversity adds – it does not detract. Programs, such as the Center for Free Enterprise’s reading group, help facilitate discussions on a range of current and important topics, discussions that integrate different opinions and different ideas, even different values and priorities.

Learning to be open to diverse and divergent ideas and learning to work on multicultural, heterogeneous teams is both principled and practical – and it is more fun. At a fundamental level, most of us believe that fairness and decency compel us to afford everyone respect – the respect we would want others to show to us – and we know it is virtuous to give everyone a fair, unbiased chance to contribute and succeed.

It is also practical to give everyone opportunity and to integrate all contributions and ideas into

open, nurturing, and productive organizations.

Diversity also contributes to greater pleasure of “fun” – a world of people who are different, who offer diverse values, culture, and aesthetics – is more interesting, more thought-provoking, and more fun.

Research shows that creating more inclusive business practices and policies is associated with higher corporate market value. I encourage you to read the research from our own faculty on the topic. Benjamin P. Foster, professor of accountancy, Andrew S. Manikas, associate professor of management, and Dianna C. Preece, professor of finance, recently published an article in the Journal of Accounting, Ethics & Public Policy entitled “LGBTQ Workplace Inclusion before and after Obergefell V. Hodges: Association with Tobin’s Q and ROA.” In this issue of Currency, we celebrate the great strength which comes from embracing. From highlighting women in pivotal roles in family business to students like Ruomei Wang and alumni like Tendai Charasika, we believe in the value and impact diversity, inclusion, and fostering a sense of belonging adds to the very fabric of our community.

Our success and progress as a community are directly tied to our beliefs and investments in one another. When we come together and offer the grace that comes from learning and listening, we can achieve greatness. Thank you for being a part of our College community.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI TENDAI CHARASIKA

JACKOFALLTRADES MASTEROFBUSINESS This past January, the University of Louisville announced the hiring of Tendai Charasika as an entrepreneur-inresidence (EIR) with the Office of Research and Innovation, where he will be responsible for connecting UofL with industry and startups.

In addition to this new role, Charasika currently works as chief strategy officer (CSO) for Saling Wealth Advisors as the financial industry evolves in the face of rapidly changing technology. Managing multiple responsibilities is a skill Charasika honed while obtaining his first degree.

When the time came, Charasika sought career change by pursuing new ventures rooted in entrepreneurship. For him, the switch was an opportunity to explore and improve the business landscape in his hometown, while also tapping into family ties.

Charasika completed his undergraduate degree in 2003 and began working in the civilian ranks for nearly four years with the United States Army Corps of Engineers as an environmental engineer. He built upon his experience there with a move to Summit Energy Services. After about six months learning the energy industry, he was hired

Since 2014, Charasika has accelerated his passions and talents further, building upon his experience and putting his skills with results-oriented leadership to use. Prior to his time with Saling Wealth Advisors, he spent five years with mobile app company SuperFanU as chief executive officer, overseeing its growth to a million-dollar company and improving services for the innovative fanengagement/sports industry.

In addition to the recent EIR position, Charasika currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the College of Business. As a product of the MBA program, he knows the impact his role can have on students. By encouraging others to get involved with the College, he knows that a combined effort from all can empower each of us to emerge better.

With such an extensive and storied professional history, Charasika is ready to meet challenges head-on in innovation and industry as UofL’s latest EIR. “I love business and continue to both study it and practice it every day. My engineering background taught me to connect the dots and be resourceful. The EIR position will allow me to leverage my wide range of experiences and network to help [leverage connections], inside and

Ruomei Wang Senior, Computer Information Systems College of Business

TRANSLATEOPPORTUNITY “I never dreamed that I was going to study in the U.S. I was watching the [2016] election with my dad at home [in China] and didn’t know that I’d be watching the next presidential election here [in Louisville]!” Four years and half a world away — a span of miles and time allows for both discovery and growth — Ruomei Wang is a senior CIS major at the College of Business.

During her time at UofL, she has grown from a student who was admittedly shy and concerned about her fluency with English to be a student mentor, a leader in the Chinese Scholars Union, and a help desk intern for KFC, communicating with KFC professionals nationwide daily. What emerges from the years of discipline and dedication is a young professional who is grateful for the opportunities presented to her, and her commitment,

in turn, to honoring those opportunities through serving her immediate community.

Ruomei’s academic record and awards are clear testimony to her work ethic; Dean’s Scholar, multiple scholarships, a 3.94 cumulative GPA. For Ruomei, none of these accolades would be possible if it weren’t for the many mentors that held the doors open for her.

These opportunities began with UofL professor Wei-Bin Zing visiting China on behalf of the Sister Cities Young Scholars. “I was the only student selected from my school,” says Wang. “I couldn’t even believe it!”

Beyond the classroom or the internship, Ruomei helped to revitalize the Chinese Scholars Union (CSU) at UofL, working with several of her newfound friends to share the culture and experiences Chinese students bring with them to our Cardinal Community. She has become a fixture in the student community — not

STUDENT SUPERHEROES only sharing her UofL experience with potential Chinese students, but working as a translator and peer tutor for REACH. As president of the CSU, Ruomei helped coordinate much needed COVID-19 supplies to UofL’s Chinese student population.

“The Chinese Embassy reached out to me at the start of the pandemic, and we were able to help get students masks, hand sanitizer, and other supplies. Even though I was not on campus, it was great to help my classmates get what they needed.” Another connection Ruomei helped build was connecting job recruiters with her fellow Chinese students.

“G.E. reached out to [CSU] to hire more Asian students. We put on an event with the Speed School… one of my friends is a finance major who got an internship position at the session.” While she left her official tutor position at the University to pursue her KFC internship, Ruomei’s commitment to her fellow students remains as she is still the CSU president.

“My IT teacher wasn’t interested in teaching me because I was a girl,” explains Wang — a digital glass ceiling that did not deter her from learning. “I trust in girls’ ability to do anything and still believe in women in technology. I am always talking to my female CIS professors.”

Ruomei is ready for her next adventure — graduate school with the goal of one day being a professor. “My mom teaches English and human resources. Colleges are about lifelong learning, and I would love to get to help students that have a passion to learn.”

Ruomei is also looking to see what opportunities —Ruomei Wang look like beyond UofL. “I love Louisville and the people and UofL, but I want to experience other cities. I’m so new [to America] I want to know what’s out there and try out something new.”

Interning for KFC has been a dream come true for Ruomei. “When I was little, any time there was a holiday or celebration, my family took me to KFC. It was my favorite place to go,” says Wang. “After I came to the U.S., everything seemed so strange and so new, but the moment I saw KFC, I felt better because that was something I could relate to.” Since starting last summer, Ruomei has been applying her CIS education in fixing disk backup failures, managing Windows services, and helping to document and solve software and hardware issues. Beyond the textbook, it’s the intangibles that Ruomei feels have been the most surprising part of her work experience. “UofL has given me the ability to trust my problem-solving skills. I just feel confident that I can figure out challenges [at the IT help desk].”

Ruomei’s interest in IT started at an early age. “I would watch my mom make PowerPoint slides and spreadsheets, and I became interested [in doing that too],” says Wang. Ruomei’s curiosity was further fueled in middle school as she began to help repair and service A/V and tech equipment at her school. “When teachers would

CONSTANCYTHROUGHCHANGE Katherine Haynes started at the College of Business back in 2002. In her 18 years at UofL, she has worked under three deans (plus an interim dean), seen Frazier Hall expand to include an equine and entrepreneurship wing, and observed a myriad of programmatic shifts and changes consistent with a College growing and evolving to meet student needs.

“I have met some of the most talented and sensitive faculty and staff at the College,” says Katherine.

“Some have passed on, but I will forever be grateful for having known them.”

Even as the College has adjusted to the Coronavirus pandemic, Katherine remains a fixture, be it in virtual meetings as a member of the Diversity and Inclusion committee or working remotely for the accountancy office. Katherine’s experience and compassion have resonated with students — many of whom see her as a mentor. This dedication to both her work and serving students earned Katherine the College of Business Staff Excellence Award (given to her in 2011 and again in 2018). We spoke to Katherine recently about her time at the College.

UofL: Tell us about your path to the College of Business. What did that transition from the public sector to higher education mean to you?

Haynes: After receiving a BA in social work in 1973, I had a short stint as a social worker with the KY State Department of Child Welfare. I was astounded at the condition of the general population — I did what I could to help, but it took a toll on me emotionally. So, I decided to help people in other ways by venturing into the world of business. In the retail industry, I worked with buyers, where I learned about sales, marketing, the textile industry, fashion, and advertising. I learned about customer service by helping consumers with purchasing decisions, which meant I had to know the product well. I ultimately became assistant director of our computer inventory department. I worked with the Department of the Census, a branch of the federal 8

government. The training was extensive, but I found this work very interesting. I changed jobs and worked in the insurance industry, where customers were concerned with risk management. I spent 19 years working in a banking subsidiary of the 1st National Bank, where accounting operations were managed in the travel services department. This was a large department that processed and managed hundreds of travel service accounts and about two million documents per week. I learned a lot about how businesses operate as we handled accounts for many corporate businesses in other areas such as the accounts receivables department, the fraud department, and the advertising departments. At one point, several of us were selected to help an entrepreneur develop a payment processing company, which is worth millions today.

When I entered the work world, I started with a typewriter but had to train on the job through the years to master the computerization of nearly everything. My husband and I had to juggle work/life issues while being parents to three children. Without the grace of God, support from family and friends, neighbors, and school, I could not have maintained this pace. Additionally, I had met and worked with incredibly talented people who provided awesome teamwork, inspiration, assistance, and cooperation.

By the time I came to UofL, I had 29 years of work experience. The pace seemed to be slower and calmer when I came to work in this institution, and I had to adjust to that. It’s more conducive to thinking and learning.

UofL: Many students have seen you as a mentor and trusted confidant. How have you built these relationships with students over the years?

Haynes: Working with the students has been rewarding. To see them transform when they began to understand the world around them is gratifying. I tried to give chances to local and international students who had limited work

experience because working as a student assistant is a great time to learn and build good work habits.

Of course, some struggled with grades, but I always encouraged them to keep trying. I also believe that work should be fun, so I made sure they were included in some of the functions of the College, plus they knew that celebrations and humor were important. One student commented that he appreciated my interest in making him feel that he belonged. These students were pretty intelligent — I provided them a quiet place to study (after completing their tasks) and insisted that they take advantage of it. Many now have successful careers — some have gone on to earn advanced degrees. And some have come back and mentioned to me that I had set a good example of what it means to develop a good work ethic.

UofL: What do you feel has been the key to your longevity at the College?

Haynes: This is an institution of learning, and

there are so many opportunities to do so. It’s also a family friendly place to be, and aside from that, I’ve been fortunate to work with the chair of finance and director of the School of Accountancy, from whom I have learned so much. In addition, we have a dean who cares.

UofL: Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to those starting their professional careers?

Haynes: Make the best choices that you can, be kind, and help others. However, don’t beat yourself up if you made mistakes — no one is perfect. This world is about building and repairing, and moving on. Try not to be judgmental of others, but try to understand them.

Learn all that you can and keep yourself healthy.

Become interested in the community where the University is located and try to help it become a better community. At the end of the day, you want to be able to say, “I’m glad I did that.”

As the workforce has become more diverse and more women enter it, organizations must create spaces that enable the participation of all. While the corporate landscape changes and adapts, family-owned and operated businesses are a step ahead on this front.

Research indicates that family businesses with women leaders are more welcoming of contributions from women, encourage higher participation from women, and even show enhanced performance of the company overall.

For the Family Business Center (FBC), members Rita Vest, Kelly Abney, and Robin Bray are leaders in their respective companies and testaments to the strength of women leadership in a family business. Their collected and shared insights here are crucial, not only to the development of family businesses but also to a larger community conversation.

Rita Vest, president and CEO of Vest Advertising, understands that part of that strength can be attributed to supporting female employees to be open about any issues they face.

“I have an open-door policy. We do have daily and weekly meetings so that…we talk about our updates, but also problems they may need to overcome and guidance to handle certain situations, both as women and part of the business,” Vest says. “I think it is so important for we, as women…to believe in ourselves because we have this fear that keeps us back.”

However, it’s the empathy and human experience that family business offers as its strength in supporting employees and connecting with customers.

“AS WOMEN IN BUSINESS, WE TEND TO SET ASIDE OUR INHERENT NATURE OF CARING IN ORDER TO COMPETE IN A WORLD THAT IS SOMETIMES UNCARING.”

This sentiment is common among women in the workplace, as Kelly Abney knows. The College of Business alum graduated in 1983 and, as she entered the workforce, felt that women were often underrepresented and ignored in the professional landscape.

“When I was coming up, women weren’t really in the boardroom, and if they were, they weren’t necessarily welcome. So, even when I got to the table, I felt like I had to really fight for my position in a way that was palatable. I believe that from that standpoint, even when I got to the table, the expectation was to be seen and not heard.”

“The innate nature of business is to compete. As women in business, we tend to set aside our inherent nature of caring in order to compete in a world that is sometimes uncaring. However, I bring this caring nature to the table,” says Robin Bray, president and CEO of Bray Property Management. “Logically, I want my business to profit, but at the same time, I think that now more than ever, we need to bring those emotions and a sense of caring to the table if we want to make the world a better place.”

As active members of the FBC, Vest, Abney, and Bray have all —Robin Bray participated in CEO roundtable President & CEO discussions and carried the Bray Property Management lessons learned forward in their own leadership practice. They understand that by participating in these spaces, they’re enabling others to engage and succeed as well.

As president of Mira, a local brand resource management company started by her parents, Abney knows the value that her experience and encouragement have for the next generation of female leaders. She has passed the family business lessons she’s learned over to her daughter and nieces as they pursue leadership roles. “I have found that as a female leader, the most important component is in how you present yourself. I have taught [them] to have confidence when they walk into the room and to be present.”

The value in diversity doesn’t only come from meeting metrics on paper for diversity initiatives, but in encouraging everyone to share their thoughts.

“I have instilled the confidence to speak up when they have something to say,” says Abney. “I believe that showing the confidence and guts to share their opinions openly and freely gives them a feeling that they belong at the table.”

The phrase “business isn’t personal” was coined to reflect a common belief that mixing human emotions

“I think I would be happy if my legacy is that I made an impact,” Abney says. “I have been very lucky to have had many wonderful people in my life and have tried to pay that forward.”

CENTER FOR FREE ENTERPRISE CFE READING GROUPS SPRING 2021

ONEBOOKATATIME The ability to engage in civil discussion with someone who has different views, or comes from a different background, seems to have become a lost art on college campuses, and our country in general.

People on different sides of issues often turn a deaf ear, or worse, shout down, dismiss, or belittle those who don’t think like they do. Through its robust student reading group program, the Center for Free Enterprise in the College of Business is working to change that disturbing trend, one book at a time.

Each semester the Center offers up to three different reading groups for students who are interested in reading a variety of books, and participating in discussion with their peers. Center faculty facilitate the discussions, but it is the students who take the lead. “It’s really important for students to lead these discussions,” says Steve Gohmann, director of the Center for Free Enterprise. “This isn’t about what I think about a book. It’s an opportunity for students to listen and learn from each other, to develop their own opinions, and maybe hear a different viewpoint they hadn’t considered before.”

And that approach has brought Carl Fletcher back to participate in a second reading group this spring. “I have learned about many other perspectives, and it really helped me think about economics and politics a lot differently,”

says the sophomore economics and finance major. “The group has really helped sharpen my communication skills, along with improving my ability to think about other possible perspectives.”

To garner a diverse array of viewpoints and enrich the discussions, the Center encourages students of all majors and grade levels to apply to participate. Junior bioengineering major Katya Kovatsenko, who is back this spring for the fifth time, appreciates the diverse make-up of the groups and the varied conversations that result. “The participants provide refreshing perspectives to different economic topics,” she says.

Gohmann says another goal of the reading groups is to help students hone important

skills to enhance their academic careers, as well as life beyond college. “Reading books they might not otherwise read, and discussing them with their peers, helps students develop important critical thinking and listening skills, and those will be important as they leave college and head into their chosen career fields.”

Katya is already using what she has learned through the reading groups in her classes. “Last

semester, I participated in a group focused on healthcare. As someone interested in medicine, I have always focused on the scientific issues rather than those in the realm of business, economics, or politics,” says Katya. “However, through the three books of that group, I learned more about the past, present, and future of healthcare and expanded my viewpoint on the business of hospitals and clinics. issues will help me to advocate for an equitable environment for my patients.”

Perhaps most importantly, Gohmann wants to offer students a place where they can feel comfortable expressing their opinions and engaging in open dialog without fear of judgment. Both Katya and Carl agree the reading groups offer just that. “Having the freedom to speak freely about my opinions has been a positive aspect of… the program,” says Katya. Carl adds, “When I considered the reading group, I felt that it was crucial to have a safe atmosphere, and I believed that if it wasn’t, then I wouldn’t participate.”

The Center has been hosting student reading groups since its founding in 2015. During the pandemic, students can choose from in-person or virtual meetings. The Center provides all reading materials and meals following discussions free of charge for participants, and those students who meet participation requirements receive a scholarship.

Kat Eigelbach Online Programs

Kat is the director of the Online Programs Office for the College.

She is a UofL alum as well as a Louisville native. Kat has been working in education technology and online teaching in higher education for eight years. In her free time she loves to be outdoors, hiking, camping, working in her herb and vegetable garden, reading some good sci-fi, and playing with her twin four year-olds.

Matt Elder Online Programs

Matt joins the College of Business as coordinator of online instructional support where he looks forward to helping the college identify and streamline processes that will assist our faculty in delivering high quality instruction to our students. He is a graduate of UofL where he earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and master’s degree in college student personnel. He received his Doctorate of Leadership Education from Spalding University and brings over 13 years of higher education experience into his role.

Erica Hulse Online Programs

Erica Hulse works as the coordinator of online student support and community in the Online Programs Office for the College of Business. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English & Allied Language Arts from Western Kentucky University and a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Louisville. With over five years of experience working directly with online graduate students as both a student advisor and retention manager, she is committed to improving the distance learner experience and is excited to bring her knowledge, talent, and passion for online student support to the University of Louisville’s College of Business.

Jessica, unit business manager, senior, comes to the College of Business after fifteen years with the University in the College of Arts and Sciences. She has experience working with a variety of budget and financial operations at the University. Jessica received her Masters of Arts in Higher Education from the University of Louisville in 2009. She enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, and reading in her spare time.

Kelly Watson Dean’s Office

Joining in January 2021, Kelly Watson is our new College of Business events manager.

She is a Louisville native and a Western Kentucky University graduate with a hotel, restaurant, and tourism management degree. Kelly brings nearly twenty years of events and development experience working at the Muhammad Ali Center and the hotel and tourism industry across the city.

Erica Holloway-McDaniel Pathways Program

As the newest member of the College of Business family, Erica Holloway-McDaniel has joined the Pathways program.

She is proud to be a leader of the Pathways program and believes in the vision and purpose of the initiative. Erica’s professional tenure in education spans over seven years and includes serving students across the lifespan. She has served students ranging from early childhood through graduate school.

She plans to use this unique perspective in service to the Pathways program.

Louisville native and graduate of duPont Manual High School, Erica earned her bachelor’s degree from UK and her master’s from Arizona State University. She is a proud wife and mother and is a lover of music, movies, and travel. Erica’s passion for empowering students and increasing access to opportunity motivates her daily.

For her part, she has worked to engage these spaces in CIS 420 by exposing her students to real-world projects that reflect the larger community. As a higher-level course, the students entering CIS 420 already have the technical, programmatic skills down; allowing for the class to be an application of their gained knowledge as well as soft skill competencies. Students work in teams on a realworld project to present a tangible product by semester’s end. In this course, they learn the nuances of working in teams, solving problems, and meeting their deliverables. Often, solving these problems moves beyond the software and programming into more complex, nuanced spaces. “At times, I allow them to be in the gray area and use their leadership, humanity, creativity, and critical thinking skills to lead them towards finding their optimal solutions that work for their team,” says Karimi. “This path fosters their soft skills competencies and builds their confidence…I want them to attain that selfconfidence so when they go into that interview, they have been exposed to so many [real-world] scenarios that they know what to say and how to articulate what they did in this course.” Beyond the experience, the CIS 420 course gives the students a tangible takeaway, professional portfolio pieces that demonstrate the theoretical made real. In her CIS 310 course, “After they gained the foundational knowledge and technical information, I ask them to deliver assignments that are portfolio quality pieces they will be proud of,” says Karimi.

At the core of the best teachers and mentors is a capacity to take a spark and bring it to flame — providing the oxygen-rich atmosphere that ignites imagination and illuminates a room. Spend a few minutes with Dr. Karimi, and you’ll learn that what fuels her is also what shines in her students.

“I think the whole purpose and mission of education is to get these graduates ready for the workforce — specifically for their long term. So [we must do] anything that we can do to equip them with the knowledge they need not just as entry-level professionals, but with the self-confidence to flourish, grow, and hopefully do some good out there in the world.”

For Dr. Karimi, building a bridge between the technical skillset and soft skills is crucial to professional success.

As a recent PhD, her research was predicated on the impact of soft skills in the IT field. Understanding the software and the programming is only half the equation — its mastery is lost without the ability to communicate and express those talents to others.

“As I started my studies, I encountered peer-reviewed articles that spoke of the demand for soft skills in graduates, and it resonated with me,” says Karimi. This study took her back to her experiences in the corporate world, including tenures at Coca-Cola and Colgate Palmolive. “When I was working at Coca-Cola and hiring for entry-level [positions]…I could see a distinction between students coming from UofL and those from other entities. [These students] just had better overall interpersonal skills.” In the years since, this rift between soft skills and STEM has only increased, according to Karimi. “There’s a huge gap that is not going away, and it’s vividly obvious amongst entry-level students going into the workforce.” As a result, Dr. Karimi studied this gap by looking at Louisville’s health care industry, with 27 various local organizations taking part in the qualitative study. “The question as educators is, ‘Are we equipping students with the right skills that the future will need and what is it that we need to do?’” For those taking part in the study, those skills in demand include 16

Born in Iran, Dr. Karimi came to the U.S. as a teenager and had a passion for learning instilled in her at an early age. “My mom always used to say that investing in education is an asset no one can take away from you, and wherever you go, you will have it. As a young lady in IT and an immigrant in a foreign country going into a male-dominated field… education [and what it offered] was embedded in me.” In many instances, Dr. Karimi was often the sole female IT professional in her department or serving in a leadership capacity. The degree opened doors, but as her career as a programmer progressed, an opportunity came that allowed for her to hold that space for others. During her time helping to launch Coca-Cola’s innovation think tank, she first started

working and training with recent graduates. “Towards the end of my career at Coca-Cola, I started teaching as an adjunct, and I liked it! You could change peoples’ lives.” Even as she ventured down the entrepreneurial path and other endeavors (including work in the nonprofit world), teaching called to her. This evolution led her to higher education and eventually to joining the College of Business. “[Teaching] is where I think I can make the biggest impact as a human being.”

Often the light impact emits in these student-spaces and what darkness it disperses is not for the mentor to know or even see. For Dr. Karimi, she has been able to see first-hand what that inspiration looks like to students. “I’ve had so many students come into [CIS 420] — especially young ladies — not feel confident about their capabilities.” As a result, Dr. Karimi leans on her past work to help students discover and reinforce their strengths to foster a belief in themselves. In that process of discovery, Dr. Karimi learns and tackles an ever-evolving world’s challenges to ensure her students are ready for tomorrow. That challenge was made all too real this year by teaching (and injecting humanity) in a pandemic.

“This Covid-thing, oh I’ve learned…to [continue] to be compassionate and be there for one another.” Last semester, one of her students contracted Covid before

their final presentation. “Even though I told her that she didn’t have to present, she said, ‘No I can’t do that.’ She came for her team. I was in tears.”

This past December, Karimi invited CIS student Ruomei Wang to attend the 2020 Women In Tech Louisville Awards with her. The experience was an eye-opener to Ruomei, “I was so inspired by everyone there.” For her part, Dr. Karimi won the STEAM Leadership award. Seeing her professor recognized by a community beyond the University was inspirational and aspirational for Ruomei.

There is not only a place for women (and women of color) in the IT world; there are also places in the community where these women are recognized and championed. Being able to see oneself in spaces that break with the status quo and translate those experiences for others is itself a teaching moment, and Dr. Karimi offers advice for women looking to enter STEM fields. “First and foremost, they have to believe in themselves. They will be surrounded by a lot of male colleagues, and as a result, may not feel like this is a profession for them. They need to remember that there is a reason they picked this path. There was something passionate that drew them into this arena of technology. If they believe in themselves, do the best they can, and focus on the passion, they will succeed.”

Betty Coffee Brown, 78, of Jeffersonville, IN, passed away on December 21, 2020 surrounded by her family.

Betty received her PhD from Virginia Tech in 1985. She was a professor of accountancy at UofL for over 30 years; then became Associate Dean for the College of Business the last 10 years. She retired in 2008 to spend time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Dr. Brown was committed to both her family and the College. That commitment was reflected in her teaching.

“Betty retired at the end of the spring semester 2008,” recalls School of Accountancy director Bill Stout. “Back then, summer classes were really important. I asked her if she’d stick around and teach 301 in the summer.

She said she would (and did). At the end of the summer session, she told me that was the worst teaching experience she’d ever had and told me to never ask again (she was nice about it). At the end of the spring semester, she’d gotten rid of all of her teaching materials for 301, so she had to start from scratch.”

Mrs. Rose Mary R. Toebbe Rose Mary Rommel Johnson Toebbe passed away on July 27, 2020 with her loving husband Lawrence by her side. She was born on August 18, 1927 in Louisville, the only child of George P. Rommel and Hilda Will. An alumna of the College of Business, she earned a BS degree in business and worked for Seagram Distillery as a secretary until she retired in 1973.

Rose Mary was involved in many civic functions and activities. She was a 2014 recipient of the Bell Awards for Outstanding Community Service. She and Lawrence received the 2017 UofL Spirit Award for couples for sustainable health and optimal aging, the gold standard for optimal aging. Rose Mary also established a UofL scholarship that helped with funds for deserving students in the College of Business.

LYLE SUSSMAN & DAVID DUBOFSKY Kudos to Lyle Sussman, professor emeritus of management and former chair and professor of Management and Entrepreneurship with the College of Business, and former professor, David Dubofsky. Together they co-authored the recently published book, Your Total Wealth: The Heart and Soul of Financial Literacy.
