THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH The University of Guelph was established by an act of the Ontario Legislature on May 8, 1964, when its founding colleges – Macdonald Institute, the Ontario Agricultural College, and the Ontario Veterinary College – joined with a new college of arts and science. Today, the institution comprises seven colleges: Arts, Biological Science, Management and Economics, Ontario Agricultural College, Ontario Veterinary College, Physical and Engineering Science, and Social and Applied Human Sciences. In partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), the University offers diploma and degree programs at the regional campuses of Alfred, Kemptville and Ridgetown. The University of Guelph-Humber, located in north Toronto, was established in partnership with the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning and offers programs leading to both a university degree and a college diploma. The University of Guelph is also renowned for its commitment to placing students first, research intensity across disciplines, collaboration with world-class partners, distance education opportunities and international outreach. Guelph students pursue more than 80 undergraduate and 45 graduate degree programs spanning the natural and physical sciences and humanities. Over 87,000 University of Guelph alumni are contributing their talents to their profession and society around the world. Today, almost 20,000 full- and part-time students study on the Guelph campus, characterized by its blend of modern and historic buildings, wide stretches of lawn and attractive arboretum.

UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH CREST The University of Guelph Crest was designed by Eric Arthur and John Hall of the University of Toronto School of Architecture. The three components of the design — the crest, shield and motto — represent the University’s links with the City of Guelph and the University of Toronto (the degree-granting body for Guelph’s founding colleges before the University of Guelph was incorporated in 1964). The white stallion in the crest links U of G with the House of Hanover’s coat of arms. The name “Guelph” comes from “Welfen,” the family name of the House of Hanover, which intermarried with the English royal line. The three-part shield combines a book (symbolizing learning, the liberal arts and the University of Toronto connection), an astrolabe (symbolizing science) and a cornucopia (a symbol for abundance and agriculture). The crest and shield are used with or without the University of Guelph motto rerum cognoscere causas, a quote from Virgil which means “to learn the meaning of reality.”

THE UNIVERSITY MACE Created by Guelph artisan Harold Muller and presented to the University by the citizens of Guelph, the mace is carried in the academic procession by the Beadle. It is topped by the silver crown of Queen Victoria (reigning monarch when two of the founding colleges were established) and decorated with native Canadian stones. Below the crown are the insignia of Queen Elizabeth II and the founding colleges and four plaques bearing the coats of arms of Canada, Ontario, the City of Guelph, and the University. The crown is mounted on pine from Massey Library and supported by metal forged from an old Ontario farm implement. Sixteen symbols on the shank represent the arts, sciences and various college activities.

WELCOME To the graduating class of 2014: Celebrating convocation means you have completed one phase of the journey of your life. During your time at the University of Guelph, you have had opportunities to think, to challenge, to test and to learn. Now it’s up to you to chart a course for the future. It’s up to you to decide how you will enrich your own life and the lives of others, as well as your community and our larger society. Your time with us at Guelph has prepared you as a new generation of leaders. We are counting on you to use what you have learned and experienced to make the right choices for yourselves and for others in our world. Good luck in the next phase of your journey – one that matters to you and to others around you. Congratulations!

David Mirvish Chancellor

I am pleased to welcome everyone to convocation and to congratulate our graduates and their families on this very special occasion. Today we celebrate the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance, inspiration and discovery, and, especially, our graduates’ potential to use what they have learned to shape their life and to transform our world. I hope that during their time at Guelph, our graduates have learned something about life — about how exciting life is when you try out ideas, when you learn something new, when you connect with others, and how rewarding life is when you use your abilities for positive change. Life is, in fact, what the University of Guelph is all about. “Changing Lives, Improving Life” is our brand, our identity. It reflects our teaching and research strengths, our contributions to society, and our commitment to enriching the minds and lives of students in hopes that the lessons they've learned will serve them well once they move on to their new lives. At the University of Guelph, life matters. We look forward to seeing and hearing about what our graduates do with theirs.

Alastair J. S. Summerlee President and Vice-Chancellor

CONFERRING THE DEGREE / GRANTING THE DIPLOMA The dignified ceremonials used for conferring degrees have evolved from rituals used in the 12th and 13th century church. Early students were usually clerks in holy orders, monks or priests who wore a habit or cloak with a cowl or hood. Modern academic costume has its roots in the colourful robes introduced by Oxford and Cambridge 600 years ago. The Convocation ceremony is also an ancient tradition. The ceremony begins with the arrival of the mace, symbol of the University, and the Chancellor, our Senior Executive Officer. The Chancellor confers the degree or grants the diploma while the Beadle places the hood over the recipient’s shoulders. At the University of Guelph, the Beadle – another link between the University and its clerical roots – is the Secretary of Senate. The presentation of the parchment is the final act of the ceremony.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The wearing of academic costume is a tradition that has continued since the Middle Ages, when the first Universities were founded. The regalia vary slightly from one University to another, and within a University, according to the status of the wearer. At the University of Guelph, the Undergraduate’s and Master’s gowns are black, Doctorate gowns are blue. The colours for the degrees are as follows: Bachelor of Applied Science – blue Bachelor of Arts – white Bachelor of Arts and Science – narrow white and gold Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management – red and gold Bachelor of Commerce – taupe Bachelor of Computing – dark blue Bachelor of Engineering – dark green Bachelor of Landscape Architecture – orange Bachelor of Science – gold Bachelor of Science in Agriculture – yellow Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences – purple Bachelor of Science in Technology – narrow blue and gold Doctor of Veterinary Medicine – brown Master of Applied Nutrition – pale gold/pale green Master of Applied Science –gold/green Master of Arts – white Master of Arts (Leadership) – white Master of Bioinformatics – gold/red Master of Business Administration – grey/silver Master of Engineering – green Master of Environmental Sciences – purple Master of Fine Arts – red and white Master of Landscape Architecture – orange Master of Planning – dark green Master of Public Health – blue Master of Science – gold Master of Science (Planning) – gold Doctor of Philosophy – gold with blue cord Doctor of Veterinary Science – gold with gold cord The Bachelor’s hood is edged with the distinctive colour. The Master’s hood is the same as the Bachelor’s except that it features a double edge.

HONORARY DEGREES In conferring honorary degrees the University seeks to honour individuals whose accomplishments demonstrate a standard of excellence we hope will inspire our graduates. The Committee considers candidates from a broad range of categories including achievements in the arts and sciences, business, public service, professions, voluntary service in the community at large, or service of long-standing or exceptional merit to the University. The Committee, from time to time, may recommend those whose outstanding contributions to their fields or to society have not yet been widely recognized.

WARREN JESTIN Warren Jestin is the Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President of Scotiabank. His keen insight on national and international economic and policy issues is widely sought and highly valued. He is also an alumnus, and long-time friend and supporter, of the University of Guelph. He has served on the C.D. Howe Institute’s Monetary Policy Council and has contributed to the economic policy committees of the Canadian and Ontario chambers of commerce and the Toronto Board of Trade. Dr. Jestin also chairs Scotiabank’s Sponsorship and Donations Committee and serves on the Board of the Markham-Stouffville Hospital, the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, and Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. Our students are uniquely privileged to benefit from his role as a frequent guest lecturer and the inaugural Economist in Residence.

EARLE O’BORN The life story of Earle O’Born illustrates how passion, determination and drive can bring tremendous success in business, and improve the wellbeing of the community as a whole. In 1961 he opened The Printing House Limited (TPH), currently the largest, privately owned branch networks in Canada, with more than 70 locations and hundreds of employees. TPH has won numerous awards within the printing industry for business management and entrepreneurship and has twice been recognized as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies. Mr. O’Born has used his success to give back to his community and help others help themselves. With his wife Janice, he founded the TPH Charitable Office, which has raised millions of dollars for charities across the country.

UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR EMERITUS/EMERITA The honour of University Professor Emeritus/Emerita may be given to a retired professor who continues their scholarly association with the University. The prime criterion for nominations will be sustained, outstanding scholarship of such a level that it is recognized internationally. Steve Leeson
