Stealing gold? Watch out for Gryphons.

For those of us who graduated before 1967 or so, the rather formidable-looking creature which serves as the symbol of Guelph's varsity teams may be something of a mystery.

Even for people on campus, there's been confusion over pronunciation: is it gry-fon to rhyme with cry on (we hope not) or is it griffin to rhyme with sit-in?

Reliable sources say it is the latter.

The gryphon (or griffin) was a mythical creature known to the ancients as the guardian of treasures, particularly gold.

I t had the body of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle, and a tail often represented as a serpent. The gryphon was allied with the sun, and ancient painters represented the chariot of the sun as drawn by gryphons. They were said to inhabit the Asiatic Scythis, where gold and precious stones were abundant; anyone intent on plundering these treasures would be torn apart by gryphons, thus being chastised for his greed.

The inspiration for the name of this frightful symbol is credited to Fred Gilbert, who, during the summer of 1966, suggested that a softball team playing under

the banner of the University he called the "gryphons". Fred, who was then working on a master's degree in zoology (he subsequently achieved his Ph.D. here in 1968) was chairman of the Athletic Advisory Council for the campus, and he suggested that the name be adopted by all of the University's teams. After a year's deliberation, the Council adopted the gryphon as Guelph's team symbol.

The design of the symbol was submitted to the Council by W. F. Mitchell, Director of Athletics, who had seen the catalogue of an English manufacturer of scientific equipment, which used a stylized illustration of a gryphon as its trademark. Mr. Mitchell altered the design in a small way and wrote the manufacturers for permission to use the symbol. They agreed, and the Council adopted Bill's version of the symbol.

One of the first appearances of the symbol was in 1968, when a team of painters headed by Gord Molnar, OAC '70, executed a masterly rendition of the gryphon on the roof of the fieldhouse at the south end of the football field.

Nowadays, the confused jumble of cheers, Yea Redmen, Go Aggies, Yea Vets, et a1 is elevated to one common cheer.

AT THE TOP the management crisis in the hotel and food industry

EVERYWHERE on campus, life is quickening again as nearly 7000 beginning or returning students come from their holidays or jobs, and begin thinking of English, physics, chemistry, engineering, drama and all of the other disciplines on any university campus. But at least 66 of the students are thinking a lot about hotels and restaurants.

The School of Hotel and Food Administration, entering its second year, remains the only university training of its kind in the country, and 36 freshmen are enrolled in the School's second class, for their first year.

But, for the 30 members of the first class, now starting their third semester, fall is something of a respite from what the University calendar calls "some relevant practical experience during the summer months." Three of them worked in a resort at Jasper, one was the host and substitute assistant manager at a Toronto restaurant, one was night desk clerk at a Toronto hotel, and many worked in Muskoka resorts, in the kitchens, and as waitresses.

"And they got those jobs by themselves," says George Bedell, director of the School, "we don't run anything like a placement service. They'll have to learn to get jobs for themselves in any case."

The summer toilers very likely saw at first-hand what they had been hearing during their first year on campus: that the food service and hotel and motel management field, the "hospitality industry", has become one of the largest and most complex industries in the world. The growth of huge hotel and motel chains, food service franchises with hundred of establishments, caterers which sewe industry, schools, airlines and offices thousands of meals a day-all of these have resulted in a demand for the one thing in short supply: the senior executive.

"All over North America," says Mr. Bedell, "the one big problem that is preventing large scale hotel and restaurant chains, and food service Franchises, from expanding is the lack of senior management people." Before coming to Guelph, Professor Bedell was the director for ten years of management programs and the

business and technical advisory service of the National Restaurant Association at its Chicago headquarters.

"This personnel lack is true of the United States, which has about a dozen university degree programs in this field, and it's particularly true in Canada, which until now has not had one," says Mr. Bedell. Every year, he says, a total of about 600 graduates leave schools in the U.S., and most of them have between ten and twelve job offers from which to choose.

Many of these offers are from largescale enterprises in search of men and women who will quickly be able to administer wide areas of responsibility. "It may sound a little unattractive to put it this way," says Professor Bedell, "but what we are talking about is the mass feeding and mass housing of people."

An executive in the field has t o be well versed in personnel management, tax structures, corporate law, finance, and even large scale computer applications.

"Of course, there are and will be exceptions t o this," Professor Bedell says, "but the era of the self-made man in this field is over." As in any other business. the modern food service and hotel management executive must have a grasp of an incredible array of knowledge in many fields.

The great mobility of North Americans meant the decline of the small-town hotel as a gathering place as motels became more popular. "Now we are beginning t o see a demand for motels which offer more of the services that hotels used t o offer," Professor Bedell says. "Just the other day. here in the office, we were talking about another new field, the boatel. People

taking trips in their boats want to be able to dock them, and sign into a sort of marine motel, just as i f they were getting out of their car."

All of these developments are attracting students who feel they are getting in on a fairly glamorous field. "This is true to a certain extent," says Professor Bedell.

"Books like Hotel have reinforced the image that the big hotel manager has always had: an important man in the community, walking around a beautiful establishment dressed very well, and being self-assured and sophisticated in the company of well-known and even famous people. Unfortunately, this isn't the whole truth."

"It also seems like a lucrative thing to do. However, people generally see only the "front" of the establishment, where the money is flowing into the cash register. But they don't see the back. where the hard work goes on, and the bills have t o be paid."

Students must have a genuine interest in people, he says, but a number of applicants to the school have been discouraged from enrolling because they had no real grasp of what was involved in a career in the field. "You have to have something more t o offer than a mere liking for people, even though that is necessary."

Accordingly, students are immediately plunged into a broad course of studies.

In first year, they take chemistry, sociology and anthropology, microbiology, nutrition, psychology, and electives in the arts, as well as an introductory course in hotel and restaurant management. During the next three years, in addition t o a number of courses in foods, they delve into such things as business law, communications, interior design, industrial sociology, government and politics, economics, computer programming, and personnel management. "This is the value of a university course," Professor Bedell says, "a broad

and deep education is absolutely essential to people entering this field on a higher level."

like the three-year course PatROGRAMS Ryerson and others at the two-year community colleges are needed to produce technicians and supervisors. But for its top executives, the industry in Canada has always had t o try t o hire qualified Americans, against stiff competition from job offers in their own country. Even if it were successful in doing this, which has only been marginally true, says Professor Bedell, this is not a very good policy for Canada t o pursue, especially when it is trying to retain control of its own economy.

Indeed, it was through the urgings of the hotel and food industries in Canada that Guelph began to consider the establishment of the School. Guelph has always been favored by the industry because of the established courses in food and agricultural production taught in the founding colleges of the university. The colleges of arts and social sciences also offer the business, economics and sociological courses important for the curriculum.

In June, 1967, Senate recommended the establishment of the program, after nearly two years of study by special committees of the Senate. The Board of Governors established the School effective July 1st.

1968, with the first class t o be accepted in September, 1969. Both the Hotel Association of Canada and the Canadian Restaurant Association, among others, had enthusiastically endorsed the program recommended by Senate, and immediately began a large scale campaign to raise over one million dollars, the figure projected as the minimum to establish the school, its facilities, and help meet its operating expenses. To date, over $700,000 of this has been raised by the

in foods offered at Macdonald Institute. but the meagre classrooms it is borrowing are another matter. Professor Bedell and newly appointed Associate Professor Jame LaDu, together with one secretary, occupy a three-room office on the second floor of the Institute. Classes in foods were held last year in a food lab in the Institute, but the School will find itself this year teaching its academic courses in a classroom in the Arts Building.

But the University will have to wait until the Founders' Fund nears the

one million dollar mark before embarking on the first steps in the construction of a new building for the school, even though the building is in its initial planning stage. These plans call for an attractively designed building in the treed area by the campus road sewing as the city entrance to the University. It is to be bounded on one side by university buildings and overlook private homes on the other. I t will have 16,000 square feet of floor space and contain a tiered lecture theatre for talks and demonstrations.

There will also be a conference room, classroom space, a student lounge, as well as faculty offices.

For now, at least, the borrowed facilities will have to do. So far, the School is offering only one course of its own, an introduction to hotel and restaurant management. In January, it will introduce another course to the students in second year: in food service management. However, by 1971, the School will be teaching f ~ v ecourses of its own, and will eventually offer a total of 16. This means, of course, the gathering of faculty, and the recent arrival of James LaDu is the first step.

Mr. LaDu is a graduate in hotel administration of Michigan State, and comes to Guelph from the position of associate director of personnel and labor relations with ITT Sheraton Corporation of America, in Boston. Sheraton has a total of 160 hotels around the world, and Mr. LaDu worked In labor negotiations and directed a two-year-long management training and development course for the company.

Meanwhile, back in the classroom, students are discovering that the road to management status is somewhat rocky.

There are the hours of study, lab work and lectures. And of course, those summers of "relevant practical experience." If you meet one of Guelph's students at a resort next summer, chances are that a small tip would be much appreciated.

"Idon't know what we're in there, Ijust don't know."

"He must have called something special."

"It sure as hell isn't our defence."

"It's something special, all right."

With that last comment Dick Brown, the football Gryphons head coach, and his assistant coaches break into laughter.

Despite the fact that the 1970 football training camp is only a few days away there's still a little time for humour amidst the pressure of preparing for the upcoming season. In this case the comic relief is provided by a film of one of last season's games.

The laughter subsides and the coaches drag their chairs from the neat semicircular formation enclosing the projector over to the wall-mounted blackboard in Brown's office, which is above and behind the south end seats o f the hockey arena.

Tiger Cats, walks up to the blackboard, picks up a piece of chalk, and positions 1 2 "0's" in a standard offensive team alignment. Coach Brown reacts by deploying his 12-man defensive team of "V's", "C's". "H's", hoping t o nullify the "0's" strategy.

Henley then draws the possible plays that could evolve from his make-believe team, and Brown counters by shifting his men around or by dropping them back.

Slowly but surely most situations are covered and eventually the coaches reach agreement on the basic merits of the defensive formation Guelph will use for the upcoming season. Brown jots the play down on a sheet of paper for inclusion later in the 1970 playbook.

And all that took a mere eight hours or so of movies and discussion. Satisfied as they are, the coaches still can't be sure if the play will work. However, Brown and Henley, defensive team coach Londo lacovelli, backfield coach Dave Chambers, and line coach Huck O'Connell will have plenty of time t o test and refine it as

the season progresses.

All that remains before the September 19th opening game is the two-week training camp consisting of two two-hour "maybe three somepractices daily times," says Brown with a satanic gleam in his eyes -and, of course, more movies, an exhibition game against McMaster, and a final five days to iron out the kinks. Guelph plays in one of the two divisions of the Central Canada Intercollegiate Football Conference with York, Windsor, Carleton, Waterloo Lutheran, Laurentian. and Ottawa. If all goes well during the seven week schedule (six games with one week off), Brown and Gryphons would enter the eastern regional playdowns to decide which team will meet the western representative t o the 1970 Canadian College Bowl Championship game, to be played November 21st at Varsity Stadium in Toronto.

In any case, the playbook is almost full now after two weeks of fairly intense preparation and it's time for the coaches t o take the plays to the "people" who

will execute them. At the first practice session of the season, each player receives his playbook, full of the goodies Coach Brown and staff have concocted over the previous two weeks. The players also receive the training camp "itinerary" consisting of breakfast at 7:30 a.m., practice at 8:30, lunch at 11:30, practice at 2:00, supper at 5:30 and lights out at 11:OO sharp (midnight on Saturdays as there is no Sunday morning practice.)

After describing how training camp will function, introducing the coaching staff, and illustrating the partial workings of the Gryphons' offensive and defensive systems, the coaches and players head for lunch. It is the softest practice the players will encounter for the year. After lunch the 1970 season starts.

The rest of the training camp practices take on a similar format. The players split up into as many groups as there are coaches present (occasionally a coach may miss a practice due t o outside commitments, such as Henley, who travels to Hamilton for Tiger Cat practices.)

The coaches put the players through approximately 20 minutes of calisthenics, reaction drills and reflex drills affectionately termed "quicks".

Next, the players split into groups according to the positions they are trying to win on the team. Brown takes the

offensive backs -the glory guys who run over, around and through people t o get touchdowns.

Coach Brown knows the feeling. He played eight years in the Canadian Football League, five in Hamilton, two in Toronto and one in Montreal. Now 45years-old, he specialized in punt returns, and of the many men who shared that role with him, he's listed in the CFL record books as the 15th all-time ground gainer in that job. He also spent nine years coaching in the Ontario Rugby-Football Union (ORFU) before coming t o Guelph in 1968 as the offensive coach. He was appointed head coach this year.

He can be as truculent on the practice field as he is silent in the tactics room.

Heaven help the player who spoils a play.

Arms flailing the air, fists clenched, and with a definite note of dissatisfaction in his voice, he goes through the play again and the unfortunate player repeats it: "Don't lean, don't lean like that. You're giving away the fact that you're going straight ahead "Come on, come on, get your head up.

Get . your head UP." But while Brown gets extremely upset at sloppily executed plays and plain lack of effort, he can also recognize when a player has tried but is unable to master the particular moves necessary. Then Brown's ferocity disappears as he quietly takes the player aside and explains the play again.

Henley's youthful appearance belies his 33 years, but he has spent 11years as a six top defensive back with Hamilton times All Pro-Canadian and an equal number of Eastern All-Star selections.

Henley's coaching style is relaxed and calm; with his arms across his chest, his attitude suggests an unlimited amount of patience. He stands back from the players watching their moves and is quick to jump in to detail a point that could make a big difference under game conditions.

Londo lacovelli, 30, the defensive backfield coach, shows an occasional moment of frustration with a long, slow wipe of his face and an almost polite request to "hold it, hold it, try it again." lacovelli has been with the team for five years and in the off-season coaches the wrestlers who have won their league championship three of the last five years. He coached Nick Shori and Ed Millard, both silver medalists at the 1970 Commonwealth Games, while they attended Guelph.

The responsibility of preparing the facelinemenless workers of the team-the falls to 46-year-old Lionel (Huck) O'Connell, an eight-year veteran with the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen and Gryp h o n ~ 'line coach for the past eight years.

Unlike the other coaches, he possesses a bona fide instrument of torture-the blocking sled.

Coaches conference: Dave Chambers, Londo lacovelli, Garney Henley, Dick Brown. padded extensions which serve as mythical solar plexi into which the linemen thrust their shoulders. O'Connell rules over the blocking sled like an emperor over his kingdom. Adding his 220 pounds plus to the sled, he steps onto the platform section behind the padded protrusions, growls out a cadence and watches as the linemen make contact, pushing him and the sled 10 to 15 yards down the field. He's a man of few words but when he does speak it can sting.

He watches seven men prepare to hit the sled. One jumps offside and the others the timing is terrible. "O.K.," follow he says. "same group again."

The seven repeat the blocking maneuver.

He pauses for a moment and then tells them "at least you were all late that time."

During training camp Brown, Henley, lacovelli and O'Connell are receiving coaching assistance from Dave Chambers, a former member of the Canadian National Hockey Team, who will be leaving soon for Ohio State to complete a Ph.D. and coach the hockey team there; from Peter Murphy. head coach of the Kitchener-Waterloo Oaks of the Senior ORFU; and from Bob Nordoff, head coach of the Hamilton Hurricane Juniors.

After the coaches have finished their specialized practice periods, Brown calls the team together. Twelve men are designated the defensive team. They pick up protective air-filled pads called "pushbacks" and await the onslaught of the offensive teams which now begin to run through the plays the coaches have designed.

After watching the efforts of the 33 returning veterans and 42 rookies, one can only guess at what Brown feels about the upcoming season. He says he's

"optimistic but apprehensive" about 1970.

He says he doesn't sleep well the night before a game, he doesn't like to fool or joke around before a game. "I don't like to lose," he says.

Football, for Brown and his family, is "part of the marriage contract." The season never ends or starts for Brownit's an on-going thing except that the pace is a bit slower in the off-season.

Relaxing in the Physical Education Building's staff lounge, Brown described the off-season preparations he and staff members make.

"As soon as the season is over we go through our files on prospective players and we try to start writing and contacting some of the outstanding players in various areas."

"Various times over the winter we look at the movies and as the basketball season wanes we get out on the road to talk to boys to interest them in the University.

Fortunately, we have quite a few interested alumni and they tip us off to a lot of good prospects in various areas and hopefully our trips with the basketball team will take us into some of these areas."

While on the lookout for new blood Brown doesn't neglect the veteran players who are usually involved in preparing for the winter semester's mid-term exams as Brown begins his recruitment.

'We try to interest the boys in going into a weight training program throughout the winter because football is not a two or three month proposition. To safeguard a boy against injury we hope he would get outside and start running as soon as the weather gets nice."

consuming off-season activity, is a far cry from the Hollywood and Broadway treatment accorded a promising rookie when he signs a professional contract.

A University of Guelph calendar and descriptive pamphlets dealing with academic programs replace the checkbook.

If Brown happens to be talking to a player around lunchtime, he may spring for a meal, but wining and dining the rookie and his parents just doesn't happen.

Brown and his coaches usually take one or two days a week to travel to other Ontario cities to recruit players. A trip further north, to perhaps Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie, might last three to four days at the most.

"We talk to all kinds of athletes, not only football players, but also basketball players, wrestlers, gymnasts, and swimmers. What we're actually trying to do is to sell our academic programs and we just sit and talk to students, sometimes to groups of students, when we visit high schools.

One thing we can assure them is that if they get a degree from this University it will be recognized anywhere, because our Registrar's Office just does not bend on admission requirements. Now, some of the other schools do and we know this for a fact," he says.

Even though recruitment and correspondence slacken as the secondary school year ends, the coaches still do not have much time to get together for definite preparation until about mid August.

Teaching, other coaching responsibilities, and administrative positions keep them reasonably busy throughout the year.

Meanwhile, back at training camp, the Hopes and dreams of the Gryphons' coaching staff are about to get the first real test of their potential. Towards the end of the fifth practice session Brown tells the defensive team to get rid of the push-backs. The players throw them high in the air and off to one side of the field.

They hit the ground with a soft "whooshing" noise, and there are several "uh-oh's" from the players. The Gryphons are about to get down to the nitty-gritty of football -body contact-in preparation for the rapidly approaching season. in which a team, as Brown says, can't afford to lose even one game.

But of course, the six other coaches in the conference division have the same idea.

a lifetime of painting almost every day. Guelph's A FTER Evan Macdonald just wishes he couEd put his hands on paintings that disappeared years ago. Some were given to friends, others sold. "I remember years ago painting the lighthouse at Cape Crbker up in the Bruce Peninsula," he says, "I would love to see that picture again." As for how many portraits he has painted since leaving the Ontario College of Art in 1925, he's honestly stuck for an answer. He l o o k around the flower-filled y r d surraunding his century old stone house in Guelph and says finally: "I guess it would be several hundred, anyway."

Painted over a span of more than four decades, these portraits, as well as landscapes and building studies, have established Mr. Macdonald's reputation as one of Canada's best traditional painten. The 65-year-old artist is receiving an honorary degree at the Fall Convocation of the University of Guelph.

Portraits, he says, are "chancey" things. Sometimes, it takes only kvo or three sittings, but other times it takes many more, and ''it's a lemon. No doubt about it, some of those portraits are lemons. It's hard to say what% wrong when that happens, I suppose it's partly me, and partly the subject, or the way 1 perceive the subject."

"A portrait should be an extremely subtle and skillful caricature," Mr. Macdonald says. Those features a man has which make his face individual shauld be carefully exaggerated, but so slightly that everyone stilE says, that's a perfect likeness.

He tells the story about the nineteenth century American portraitist, Sargent (Macdonald's favorite) who was commissioned to paint the partrait of a woman well known in

English society of the time. She was later hospitalized, but the doctors were unable to diagnose her illness. One of them chanced to see her portrait in a gallery, and immediately recognized a case of goitre. "Now, Sargent wasn't a doctor," said Mr. Macdonald. "but he had organized his portrait around the slightly protruding eyes that she had as a result of her developing illness."

"Painting is an unnatural activity," he says, "not like drawing. which is very often an instinctive ability. But everyone has to learn to paint." This feeling is the source for some criticism of schools of art. Macdonald feels that the schools no longer teach the basic skills of draftsmanship and painting t o their students. "I felt that way when I went to school and I think it's even worse now." Mr. Macdonald studied in England for four years after leaving the Ontario College of Art in 1925. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools, Chelsea Polytechnical School and the Putney School of Art. He returned to Toronto in 1931 and worked at book and magazine illustrating, taught at a camouflage school in Vancouver during the war, and returned finally t o Guelph in 1946. exhibited in shows at the Royal Canadian Academy, HEthehasOntario Society of Artists, the Art Association of Montreal and in many one-man shows. He was commissioned

by Seagram's to contribute to their series on Canadian cities (Mr. Macdonald was assigned St. John's, New Brunswick) and by the Northern Miner to portray the Canadian north. His commis~ionedportraits include those of George Drew, Queen Elizabeth It, three of the past presidents of O.A.C. and the University of Guelph. (The University collection contains more than 15 Macdonald portraits and landscapes.) Over the past ten years, he has been labouring on portraits for the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame at the Canadian National Exhibition and has so far completed about 70 portraits of agriculturists honoured there.

Nowadays. Evan Macdonald spends most of his days in the studio he has had built on the back of the stone house not far from the University. He divides his time between the portraits and landscapes (in pen and ink, watercolor and oil) and very often, buildings and street scenes in Guelph. His series of paintings of the old Guelph Public Library, as it was being torn down some six years ago, was instantly sold during a showing at the time. He is now planning several large works, one of them showing the crowds at the exhibition of Rodin sculpture at the University earlier this year. Another is t o be of the carousel at Riverside Park in Guelph: "a marvellous thing." Some of the working drawings for this painting are JEB on these pages.

Campus Highlights CAMPUS FOOD SERVICES EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE EXOTIC "Tired of Creelman food? How about going to a German restaurant for Schweineschnitzel? Or t o a seafood restaurant for shrimps? Maybe we could order pizza and have it delivered to our room."

Starting this semester, an ambitious revamping of the food services on campus will mean that students will be able t o do any of these things and not leave the campus.

The cafeteria in Johnston Hall has been converted into a German restaurant called "Der Keller," complete with all the trimmings to produce the atmosphere of a restaurant on the banks of the Rhine.

There'll be travel posters on the walls, amber bottle-glass at the entranceway, a counter for pastries and sweet rolls, and even taped um-pa-pa music. Over in the Physical Education building, the cafeteria now looks like a Nova Scotia seaside cafe,

with fishnets, lobster traps, buoys, lanterns, corkfloats, ship's models and shells for ashtrays. A projector using 35mm slides projects nautical pictures on the corrugated walls. It's called "The Wharf".

The Midland Cafeteria (in the residence Complex B), is a fast food restaurant and pizzaria, with a juke box and late night service for those near-exam cramming grinds. Campus-wide pizza delivery will be featured in the evening.

But what about those obligatory meal cards and assigned dining rooms? These are no longer necessary, and students will

now be able t o plan their eating under three different schemes. With the first, a meal card is issued for "full board", 2 1 meals a week. The second is a nine meal plan, (lunch and supper Monday to Thursday and lunch on Friday) and the third is really no plan, just the opportunity to buy meals individually for cash at any time. The result is that any student can eat anywhere he wishes, and use either a meal card or cash to pay for the meal.

There has been some headshaking at other universities already, says Peter Clark, Director of Administrative Services.

FLOOD OF STUDENTS STRAINS PROGRAM AND RESIDENCE SPACE The largest numbers of students in the history of Guelph have applied for the fall semester and more than 500 applications from fully qualified students had t o be turned down because of lack of space. At the same time, building trade strikes caused a delay in the completion of the new residence, Lennox and Addington Hall (A-2). creating a crisis in accommodation for students.

The university received a record 8,000 applications for enrollment this fall.

Almost all B.A. programs in arts and science were filled before the end of June. More than 200 applications from qualified students t o enter the O.V.C. were rejected because of space limitations and the programs in Household Science showed similar heavy pressure.

"This is an unprecedented situation," said Ron Heath, Assistant Registrar, Admissions. Some of the other universities in Ontario still had openings in arts and sciences near the day of registration and Mr. Heath feels this is an indication that

Guelph is becoming one of the more popular universities among students, most likely because of the semester system, and Guelph's general reputation for excellence. More than 6,700 undergraduate and graduate students were expected t o enroll, compared with 6,070 in September 1969.

For students who had planned to live in Lennox-Addington, space was found in other residences. Throughout the summer, officials in the university housing office conferred with residence hall advisors and student leaders on the best way to accommodate the displaced students. Finally, some larger-than-normal double rooms. especially in such older buildings as Johnston Hall and Macdonald Hall, were converted t o accommodate three students, while some large single rooms became doubles. No rooms were enlarged without the agreement of hall advisors in each case and each residence area was studied t o make sure it retains adequate study and lounge facilities.

Four hundred "interim spaces" were gained this way and another 70 t o 75 spaces were added by using two Universityowned houses on Gordon Street and by renting nurses quarters at Homewood Sanitorium. This brings the total residence space provided by the University to 3,284 beds, or just under half of enrollment.

Virtually, all student applications for residence were granted.

The University off-campus housing office reports that student requests for rooms are about the same as last year. mostly because of the university's success in finding residence space. The housing office advertised for space on radio and reports a good response from Guelph householders. The office helps about 75 per cent of the students looking for offcampus housing.

The strikes affecting the LennoxAddington residence, which were called against the contractors, included a nine-week tile-setters' strike, carpenters' and labourers' strikes which lasted more

"We may have quite a bit of trouble at first with administrative problems," he says. "Just the same, we feel we have to give this a try. Food Services should not be set up just to please its own administrators and then expect its customers to conform. We've tried t o understand what students and faculty want, and then set it up. And we're really excited about this concept."

Until this year, any student in residence was obliged to sign up for the full 21meal contract, whether he ate every meal or not. Not only that, but he was assigned

to a particular dining room, with no menu choice. If a student went off campus. home for the weekend for instance, he was wasting food he had already paid for.

Off-campus students ate at Creelman, again with no menu choice.

Now, there are two kinds of facilities on campus. A t the first, a set price is paid at the door, then one can eat as much as he wants inside. These include Creelman dining hall, the dining room in Macdonald Hall, and two of the dining halls in the Complex B residence: Ottawa and Orangeville. The second type includes

the "specialty" restaurants, which are set up like commercial restaurants. The Wharf, Der Keller, and the snack bar in Midland dining room will be joined by another snack bar, with late hours, in the new A-2 residence just being completed.

Mr. Clark expects that students and faculty will find the new setup a welcome and even startling change. With restaurants of this calibre, he says, the food service even expects a number of people from off-campus to make the specialty restaurants a regular part of their dining-out plans.

than six weeks and a plumbers' strike that began in early August and lasted into October. University officials are re. luctant to name a completion date, but hope that the building will be open by Christmas.

The new complex consists of Lennox Hall, which is a three-storey men's residence, a French-language house, and Addington Hall, a ten-storey women's residence which offers what is probably the campus' best view of the Guelph area.

ALMA MATER FUND ACTIVITIES

William W. Lasby, 59. Vice-President and a director of Canada Packers Limited in Toronto, has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the University.

A native of Ariss, near Guelph. Mr. Lasby attended high school in Guelph and later graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1934. In the same year he joined Canada Packers, and after working in a number of departments. became Toronto Plant Manager in 1951. He became Vice-President in 1965.

Mr. Lasby is a member of the Board of Governors of Frontier College and is Alumni Association of the University of Toronto. He is married with a son and daughter.

Mr. Ed Nodwell, OAC '56, has been appointed Executive Vice-President, McConnell Advertising, and has assumed direction of the Campany's Montreal office.

Mr. Nodwell joined the company in 1965 as Vice-President and Director of Client Services. Toronto. In 1966, he was made General Manager, Ontario Region and became Senior Vice-President, Agency Operations in 1968.

After graduation from OAC. Mr. Nodwell worked for Dominion Textile Co., Ltd., for two years. He joined Mead Johnson of Canada Ltd., in 1959, and was made Marketing Director of the Nutritional Products Division of the company, in 1961.

Mr. Nodwell has been a lecturer with various advertising and sales courses, and with extension classes at the University of Waterloo. He is now living in Montreal.

TANNER GOES TO GHANA AS PART OF EXCHANGE TEAM It's been here today and Ghana tomorrow fora team of four Guelph faculty members.

They've taken posts at the University of Ghana, as part of a co-operative program between Ghana and Guelph.

Team leader is Dr. J. W. Tanner, OAC '57, of Guelph's Crop Science Department.

Dr. Tanner, who is in Ghana for a twoyear stay, has become head of the University of Ghana's Crop Science Department.

Before taking the assignment, Dr. Tanner made a two-week visit t o Ghana.

"Quite a bit of corn is grown in the Accra plain, in which the university is

located." he said on returning to Guelph.

"Though grown under a shifting type of agriculture, some of i t is pretty goodlooking. I had originally thought I would research something tropical, but now I expect I'll end up working with corn."

Also at the University of Ghana, Dr. Margaret McCready, former dean of Macdonald Institute, is sewing as head of the Home Science Department. One instructor in this department is Mrs. Margaret Ripley of Ottawa, who has been in Ghana for some time. (Her husband, Dr. P. 0. Ripley, OAC '22, is also working in Ghana.) In addition, Miss Lila Engberg, a former Macdonald Institute faculty member, is doing research and extension work in the department.

versity of Guelph faculty member, is head of Ghana's Nutrition and Food Science Department. Dr. John Burton. OAC '62, of Guelph's Animal Science Department, will take a post at the University of Ghana's Animal Science Department in January.

Faculty members and graduate students from Ghana are also coming t o Guelph.

Up t o 40 of them may study and do research work here during the exchange program's five-year period.

The program is being financed by the Canadian International Development Agency, an arm of the federal External Affairs Department. Its goal is t o train faculty members for the University of Ghana and t o foster research projects of interest t o both Ghana and Guelph.
