t is my pleasure and hon our to have a,sumed the res ponsibility of president of the University of Guelph Alumni Association for the co ming year. My approach and objectives for 1985 -1986 will be to build on Ihe leaders hip, commitment and in vo lvement which my predecessors have shown to the UGAA over the years. I also would like to build on thei r accomplishmenls.

To my immediate predecessor, Glenn PoweJl, OAC '62, [ would exp ress my appreciati on, together wi th that of the Association's executive and the general membership as a whole, for a year of solid leadership, enthu siasm and wisdom. [n his inaugural message to alumni, Glenn propounded the th oug ht that "future generations of a lumni will judge us by our actions and deeds." The record of his yea r in office, [ am sure, will not disappoint them.

The UGAA is a very important link for all alumni of the University.

Not only does th e Association bring together alumni for th e purposes of developing programs, services and ac tivities for our alumni, but it is also the binding link between the II college and school alumni assoc iatio ns and th eir affiliates. [ am ve ry pleased with th e effort which these auxiliary associations have given to building and strengthenin g the UGAA. While they will continue to develop individuali zed programs and services for their alumni, it is important for th e UGAA to continue to find our co mmonalities, our strengths, and identify areas which require greater emphasis. In this way, the UGAA wi II continue to build on the spirit, resources , morale and financial offerings of alumni. With regard to these areas, the UGAA has every reaso n to be proud . The Associat ion continues to offer many annu al programs and activities for alumni.

These include Alumni Weekend, Homecom ing, a winter carni va l ski weekend and a wine symposium , trips to baseball games, museums and other places of interest. In the area of al umni services, Ihe UGAA broke new ground two years ago with the introduction of the alumni insurance program which has enjoyed a greal deal of success with very promi sing alumni participation.

We must also recognize the importance of the UGAA in terms of ensuring that alumni are adequatel y represe nted on Uni vers ity and campus-related committees, boards and the Senate of the Uni versity, so Ihat the vi ews or alumni ca n be put fo rth in a way that will contrib ute to the well-being of University and campus life.

I tak e special pride in pointing out the countl ess hours which many alumni have given to se rving on, and participating in , a number of important University and camp us committees and boards. Our alumni repre se ntati ves at various levels have shown tremendous dedication, keen interes t, and co ntinue to provide a se nse of directi on.

A more recent development within the UGAA has been the crea tion of th e Alumni-in-Action Program. The Program , designed and operated by sen ior alumni , continues to playa very va luable role within the UGAA and the Un iversity community. It is my intent io n to e nsure that the Alumni-in-Action Program will continue to receive the moral

and fin ancial backing of the UGAA. Thesc are ju st a few of the many programs, services and way s in which th e UGAA ensures that alumni continue to play a significant rol e within the Uni versity community. I call them acc omplishments , and we must continue to buil d o n th ese accom pli shme nts.

One key element of building for the future is to ensure that the UGAA and its affiliated alumni assoc iations continue to attrac t new alumn i from the man y programs at the Uni ve rsity.

Over the course of the nex t yea r, [ wilJ bc putting before the UGAA Board of Direc tors a number of new initiati ves.

Specifi call y, 1 will be as king the Board to consider the establi shment of a new standing comm ittee that will be charged with th e res ponsibil ity of setting lo ng-term and short颅 term objec ti ves for programs that will increase the aware ness of in-course and graduating student s of th e Uni versity.

Build ing for the future also invol ves a continued assessment and evaluati on of programs and acti vities whi ch are of interest to alumni . To this end, I will be asking th e Boa rd to con sider the development of a co mprehensive survey of th e kinds of prog rams, act iv ities and services th at alumni would like to see路 und ertaken in the years to come. l! is my hope that th e res ults of th e survey will indi cate how we can imp rove in mee tin g the diverse and unique needs of all Uni ve rsity of Guelph alumni, because, while it is important for the UGAA to serve th e unique needs of alumni in term s of ac adem ic and profess ional intere sts, it is equ all y important that th e UG AA devel op programs that recognize the needs of both seni or and youn g alumni.

Finally, I will be urging the UG AA Board to consider offering a pro fessio nal development co nfe re nce for all alumni leaders who are members of the vari ous alumni assoc ia tion boards of dire ctors.

Traditi onall y, this type of ac tivity has usuall y been he ld durin g th e Annual Alumni Leadership Confe re nce hosted by th e UGAA in late spring. However, because man y new alumni directors are e lected durin g the months of May and June, I will be asking the Board to co nsider holding such a co nference in Septe mber so that new direc tors and incumbent directors will , in the coming year, have the opportun ity to utili ze the knowledge and advi ce g leaned from a professional deve lopment program.

It is my ho pe that the professional deve lopment program will foc us on ways of encourag ing parti cipation of new alumni , on ideas and advi ce on programs and ac tivities j()r alumni, and on sess ions dealin g wi th leadership building and workin g with voluntee rs within the Uni versity's alumni

associati o ns.

Let me close by say ing a few word s about two indi vidual s who have recently left the staff of th e De partm ent of Alumni Affairs and Development. John Babcock, OAC '54 , form er director of the Department , gave many solid years of dedication to the growth of the University of Guelph Alumni Assoc iation.

Under his leadership, both the UGAA and th e Departme nt have initi ated many im portant changes and imp rove me nts th at have been very significa nt. As alumni , we are the benefi ciar ies of hi s hard work and co mmitment ove r the years.

More re ce ntly, Jim Elmslie retired after succeed ing John as direc tor of the Departm ent. Jim has bee n assistant direct or of the Alma Mater Fund since its ince ption in 1969 .

I am very happy to report that the Uni versity recogni zed Jim at a we ll-attend ed

retirement ga therin g at the Facul ty Club .

While time will no t allow me to list all the achieve me nt s associated with him, [ would say th at he has done a n exe mpl ary job for the Uni versity and its alum ni. On behalf of the University of Guelph Alumni Associatio n I wish bo th John and Jim, and their famili es, bes t wishes for the years to come.

Changes Bring Opportunities

hen opportunity knoc ks ... open the door ' Not a bad piece of ad vice fo r alumni of the University of Gu el ph to take to heart. If trends and rec ent si gnals are a sign of th ings to co me, then we ca n be assured of continuing changes in the uni ve rsity system.

These changes will present us with 0ppoi1unities.

Fortun ately, the University of Gue lph is already in the process of reviewing its aims an d obj ec ti ves. Esse ntiall y, the revi ew is to set the course for the instituti o n, in what are sure to be different circumst ances, as we move towards the 1990s an d beyo nd .

Uni ve rsities have al ways been an integral part of the body th at is responsible for the devel opment and" shape" of society.

Uni versities must, as centres of advanced lea rning, co ntinue to provi de th at leade rship.

In additi on, unive rs it ies must be in a position to share the responsibility of so lving th e probl ems that society creates. To let the un ive rsity sys tem fa lte r IS to let soc ie ty stag nate, if not stumble.

As alumni, we can pl ay an important ro le in ensurin g that the Uni ve rs ity of Guelph remains in the forefro nt of both edu cation and research. The expc rti se and reso urces of our al umni are needed not onl y on campus but also whereve r an d whe neve r th ere is an opportuni ty to prom ote th e U. orG . Just as the Gu elph ca mp us provided each of us with the opportunity to ad vance our skills and kn owl edge - however man y years ago that may have been - so, too, must we make sure th at the opportunity is ava il ab le for st ud ents, both today and in th e future.

I have two beautiful daughte rs. Sue is 2J years o ld , a Psychology graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University, and is working with the Toronto Dominion Bank. She 's engaged to be married in September, so that's an excit ing even t coming up in the fa ll. My younger daughter, Sandra, will be 21 in October, and is an Engli.<;h major at Wilfrid Laurier Universi ty. She's also an e nthu siastic equestrian. f-/CI' horse, Sur Fadika, claim s much of her spare time.

During your career, you've taught and worked in business. With your experience in management, you could easily work in the private bu siness sector. Do you prefer workin g in an ed uc ation al setting ')

MM. [certainly believe that hi gher education makes an incredible difference to the hea lth ancl welfare of the country ; it 's a pleasure to be able to contribute to 'ihe process. Universities also provide a great number of opportunities for cultural activities and for working with very interesting peoplc.

Having a li aiso n position between a un ive rsit) and the community, includin g bu siness, means I have the best of both wo rlds.

The announcement of your appointment as Director of the Department of Alumni Affairs and Development, in the Fall issue of the Guelph Alumnus, briefly described your professional background. l'm sure alumni wo uld be interes ted in a more personal view of Marjorie Millar. For stal1ers, 4

important, and they 're our most expensi ve and flexible resource. For Ille, the two key points are good cOlllmunications and lllutuaJ res pect between eillployer and employee. To succeed in having your staff reach fo r the same goals and objectives, yo u must help them reali ze th at they have an ow nership in whatever the goa ls are. If you communicate well, so that they realize how their work contributes to the end result , they work realJy hard , People can be very innovative, and the person " on the line" is the one who generally know how to do the job best. I like to hire people who want my job; they'll perfo rm welJ if they want to be next in line.

I understand you 're a golfer. That shou ld create a high demand for your skills at alumni toumament time.

MM. Yes, " friend raising" is ve ry important to the University. The alumni body is our most impo rtant constituen cy. We can maintain that esse nt ial lin k by prese nting co ntinuing education co urs es as well as providin g opportunities for soci al interactio n.

One of the ma in aims of the Alumni Mfa irs Office is to provide a hi gh level of service to all II of the Uni versi ty's alumni associations , and to encourage th e newer coll egcs to develop strong alumni assoc iations similar to thos e th e foundin g college s enj oy.

At the University of G uelph we are very fortunate to have the historical perspective and st ron g support of th e founding coll eges.

Gue lph alumni , a formidab le fo rce of more than 40,000 well-educa ted people, ca n make signifi cant con tributIOns to the University. In add it ion to fund rais ing, whi ch everyone think s of fi rst, alu mn i can send us top-notch students , they ca n work with the Volunteers in Support of Admissions (VISA .) program , an d advocate for us with the gove rnment or within their ow n corporations and fo und ati ons for support. It 's a two -way street. The better the Universi ty of Guelph becomes, th e more presti gious th e ir degrees become.

MM. Thi s doesn't seem to he at all tru e at Gue lph. Alumni re lations over the past years have bee n very good. Grads regularl y come hack to campus, are involved in va rious assoc iati ons , and Alumni Weekend is really successful. Recently, Rosemary Clark and I were in Chi cago at Canadi an Uni ve rsiti es Ni ght, and the Un iversity of Gue lph had 30 alumni th ere, th e highest number of any Canadian uni ve rsity.

In his Dece mber 'S4 ge neral meeting Uni versity faculty and staff. President Burt Matthews announced that "we are se tting

The Guelph Centre for Eq uine Resea rch Fund ca mpaign, which is currentl y under way to rai se $2.3 million, is a good exa mple. We tell potential donors th at we want to build a wo rld~ c l ass equine research ce ntre at Guelph to meet the long-fel t needs of the rac ing, ridin g and show-horse sec tors of our equine industry. The research in he alth, breed ing and mana ge ment will fill a void that has long existed in Ca nada .

Vo lunteer leadership is the most critical aspect that will make or break the upc omi ng campai gn. Identifying those lead ers will be our first challenge. Pcople give to peop le, and so we need many well-orga ni zed vo lunteers out th ere asking, e ither on the tel ephone or face-to- fa ce. There are a lot of people who want to g ive, but need to be as ked.

Of course, th ere are many things to be don e before the major ca mpai gn begins.

We're in the process of co mputeri zing our record s, and have established a researc h pos iti on. A Summer Empl oy men t Experience Develo pm ent (SEED) gran t will enabl e us to hil'e two students thi s summer to do researc h in th e major are as of alu mni and deve lopment. Whe n the informati on process is streamlined , we 'll he on our way towards prov iding th e right hackup for vo lunteers.

MM. \Vhen a uni ve rsity is in a ca mpaign mode, all private funds to the institution are included in that cam paig n. A majo r ca pital ca mpai gn prov ides everyone with an oppo rtunity to give to th e Univers ity ot Gue lph. People have di fferent reasons kJr giv ing, and so me will want to de signate th eir gifts. The Alma Mater Fu nd mainly prov ides mo ney for e nrichme nt prog ram s, stud ent sc holarships and dean's discreti onary fund s , and the ne ed in these areas will certainly cont inue.

While bri cks and mortar are important, they' re o nly one part 01' the o ngoin g development plan for the Uni versity of Gue lph . The other three areas , 01' course, are dec isions are reached, an announ ce men t wi ll he made. The major challenge will be lac ulty, students, and re search. The Deve lopin g Countries Farm Radi o Network (DCFRN), a Unive rs ity o f Gu e lph-based program, reach es the m via some 500 rural communicators and radio broadcasters in we ll over 100 countri es and in many languages and dialects.

Launched in 1979 . DCFRN was the brain- child o f Unive rsity o f G ue lph alumnu s George Stuart Atkins, OAC ' 39, a 25 -year veteran of C anadian farm broadc asting. I! struck him that hi gh-tec h agri cultural know足 how meant little or nothing to immense numbers of small -sc ale farme rs whose o nl y tool may be the hoe. The ir most urge nt need was to know how to feed a family o n an ac re or less o f over-worked land, how to save hill side topsoil o r how to protect stored food from rat s.

I! was also c lear to George th at such information would have to be made available in the fanners' own language - and primaril y by radio s ince so many o f the m cannot read.

As a publi c se rvic e projec t, DC FRN was launched to 34 parti c ipant s in 26 co untries by Massey- Ferguson Limited, whic h still provides offi ce space a nd funding throu gh the company 's Toronto offi ce. A year later, the Unive rs ity of Gue lph came into the picture, with bo th the Sc hoo l of Part Time Studies a nd Continuing Edu cati o n a nd the Ce ntre for Intern ational Prog rams providing office space and admini strative and acco unting servi ce s.

contribution will be $ 113,000 . "It all comes to less than $3 50, 000 - not very much, but it goe s a lon g way, " added Mark .

The packages , cons istin g o f cassettes in th e Engli sh, Frenc h or Spani sh lan guage with accompanying scripts, are suppli ed free o f charge but the fe edback is ma ndatory. It is DCFRN 's most impo rt ant guide to future programs.

What kind of info rmation are the s ma ll足 scale farmers of the Third World as king fo r?

Th ey want to know how to grow vege table s dur ing the dry seaso n, how to rid th e ir crops of field rats , how to use a lgae as fertili zer or how to find a Lise for anthill mate ri al.

pots. The idea might work for river-side farmers anywhere.

Nine different DCFRN packages containing a total of 135 such items have been produced, and every mail brings news of way s in which participants are using the material.

In the Philippines, for example, one participant makes DCFRN scripts available to the 500-member Federation of Rural Broadcasters. Maria de Penha Araujo, a Brazilian participant whose news releases go out to 917 rural newspapers, regularly incorporates DCFRN material. Jeremy Carew足 Reid , co-ordinator of the South Pacific Regional Environment Program , is distributing DCFRN material through a network of broadcasters in 23 island countries in the region.

technique in putting over a radio message. He edits DCFRN radio scripts, reducing them to short, easy-to-understand me ssages and records many of the English-language cassettes himself.

Participants are able to communicate their own view s and concerns through the entire network and share useful hints on improving their communication skills through a newsletter, The Blue Sheel, a key component of every DCFRN package.

Innovative methods are encouraged. The casse ttes can be broadcast as received, but participants are urged to adapt the se imaginatively.

One creative response to the urging co mes from Pradip Dey of All-India Radio, Calcutta, who writes farm so ng'>. DCFRN information has been used in some of these.

Some 40 of his songs have already become "hits. " DCFRN may reasonably be claimed as a predominately University of Guelph enterprise. George Atkins graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College in 1939 in Agronomy - or as it was known then , Field Husbandry. Hi s wife, Janet (Blackwood) , Mac '37 , is the daughter of the late Professor William C. Blackwood , former Head of Physics and of the Department of Agricultural En ginee ring of Guelph. Three of the ir four daughters are Guelph alumni; Margaret, Mac '65; Nora, FACS '70, and Mary, FACS '83 .

Marg aret's husband , Philip Andrewes, OAC '65 , was recently the Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food, and is now the Ontario Minister of Health.

But George would be the first to disclaim any image of DCFRN as a one-man enterprise. He did indeed start the project and set the wheels in motion but his very able

staff is respons ible for far more than typing and stuffing envelopes.

Art s '7 1, who completed her Master's at Guelph in 1973, co-ordinates the overall fun ctioning of the Network, writes the hea lth scripts, edits The Blue Sheel. draws up the budget , report s to CIDA, speaks Spanish and gathers material for future scripts from Latin American countries. Project assistant is Karen Sepers, Arts '74, and Yasmin Virani, Arts '81, is co足 ordinator of the Fre nch and Spanish Divisions.

DCFRN has made a point of addressing the traditional and growing involvement of women in agriculture throughout the Third World. The Blue Sheel is alerting participants to the importance of this audience a nd is encouraging them to use women announcers for their broadcasts. The network sets an example by presenting its own material in gender-free language and making ever more use of women for the voices on DCFRN cassettes. Experienced broadcas ters, such as Ruth Fremes. CTV Televi s ion Network Ltd .; Jan Tennant, Global Television Network , and Barbara Peacock, OAC '75F, have do nated their services.

Of particular interest are the nutrition and health items which are a sta ndard component of DCFRN packages, an area of service which George Atkins is anxious to expand as soon as fund s become available.

There has been a very positive response to the health item s so far and participants have requested more. Any expansion in thi s area would probably be the primary responsibility of Helen Aitkin.

George Atkins sums up the intent of the project: "Modernization is threatening traditio nal agricultural practices. We need to come up with idea<;that work, and share them with the rest of the world."

"One of our most important objectives is to boost the small-scale farmers' self-esteem and foster a sense of unity with other small足 scale farmers in all parts of the world."

"Their numbers are such that if their productivity could be increased by as little as iO per cent, the impact would be far reaching."

What can Guelph alumni in the Third World do to support the program? " Our objecti ve is to make our inform a tion available to everyo ne who needs it" says George Atkins. "We are only too glad to expand the distribution of DCFRN news packages to anyone who can make good use of the m.

"It would be most useful to hear from Gu e lph alumni who can se nd us the names a nd addresses of any local communicators whose work is with sma ll-sc a le farmers.

heer leaders - the term is redolent of Eisenhower, brushcuts and the Ink Spots, an age in which they served as the essence of adulation and hero-worship ­ and here they are again, a Cheer Squad at. the U. of G. yet. Has the wheel turned full circle~ A few minutes with Department of Athletics fitness instructor Sanda Hart quickly dispels any illusions on that score. These, she will have you know. without a doubt, are legitimate athletes in their own right and a glance at their training program , let alone their demanding routines. very much confirms this claim.

The 14 members of the Cheer Squad were. chosen from the student body at the beginning of the 1984/85 season , after a week of gruelling auditions in whil:h candidates were required to demonstrate high levels of skill as dancers and gymnasts, a capacity for fUl1her training , and a willingness to devote countless hours of rehearsal time in addition to a demanding schedule of games.

First-semester Cheer Squad leader Nancy Carruthers, who used to be with the Ottawa Rough Riders' cheer squad, made the final selection. Sandra Hart describes her as "an accomplished dancer, imaginative creator of Squad routines and the possessor of outstanding leaders hip qualities."

During the week that followed selection, she had the success ful candidates spending three hours every evening developing the routines which de lighted fans throughout the ensuing season and earned them a close "second" in the first annual Festival of Lights Cheer Squad Championship held earlier thi s year in Niagara Falls. That contest was won by the University of Western Ontario, largely because that university's team included some men, which gave them more flexibility in the development of routines.

Sandra says "We'd planned right from 10

the start to include men in our Cheer Squad but they were slow, at first, to come forward.

It is one measure of the Squad's success that we now have several male candidates who will be joining us next season and this will give us a Squad to be reckoned with."

This year's team, consisting of Valerie Ashworth, Carolyn Smith, Kathy Foster, Patricia Lanna, Susan Saunders, Gorete Almeida, Kelly McCutcheon, Debbie Bakowsky, Debbie Jellicoe, who took over the reins as squad leader in the second semester; Trish Ryan, Paula Szeman. Jacqueline Sullivan , Robin Farrar and Nancy Carruthers. played in every football game, home and away, all the way to the Gryphon's Vanier Cup triumph .

Coach John Mussleman goes out of his way to praise their contribution. "Their performances were always outstanding. Their

half-time show is an athletic lour de force and their spontaneous sideline stimulation of the crowd could always be relied on to build enthusiasm, keep the fans happy and rooting for us."

The half-time routine rarely lasted more than five minutes, but during that time the Squad would put on the kind of spellbinding performance that made it seem much longer and that could be relied on to earn them tremendous ovations.

"The trick" says Sandra, "is to make it look easy - and that's only achieved as a result of eight to ten hours of training every week. The co-ordination has to be perfect and some of the routines would be dangerous if these women were in anything less than peak condition. " The Cheer Squad always travelled separately from the team. In this they were fortunate in the support given by long-time Gryphon fan, Guelph businessman Walt Kelly of Holiday Car Rentals. He made his own motor home available for transponation and personally drove the team to all their away games.

Nearly $1,500 had to be found for the squad's uniforms - $500 from the Alma Mater Fund's Gryphon Club and the rest, in Sandra's words. "scratched in nickles and dimes from the Department of Athletics budget. " It was a very successful first year with the Squad enlivening all the football and many of the men's ·hasketball games. Next year, with the planned expansion that will include men, the squad can be split into smaller groups which will make it possible to cover a wider range of games, including some women's spons, especially basketball and volleyball. As Sandra Hart says, "We have to go where the crowds are." 0

1985·'86 Gryphon Football It seems like only yesterday that the Univer­ sity of Guelph Gryphons won the 1985 Vanier Cup, but soon the opening of the 1985-'86 season will be upon us. As exciting and thrill­ ing as the 1984-'85 season was, the new sea­ son will be just as stimulating for all you' Gryphon fans.

Gryphon Club Hall o f Fame Inductees - 1985 The Second Annual Gryphon Club Hall of Fame dinner will be held Friday, October 4th, 1985, at the Arboretum Centre, Univer­ sity of Guelph, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. and the induction cere­ monies at 9:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are available, at $30 per plate, through the De­ partment of Athletics. Kim Miles, president of the Gryphon Club, in making the an­ nouncement, notes that the nine athletes and two builders who will be added to last year's inaugural se lections will provide a strong and representative base to the Hall of Fame.

In the first two years, a total of 22 athletes and eight builders have been se­ lected in ten different sports, ran ging in per­ formance from 1926 to the present. Kim noted that Club criteria will allow a max­ imum of five selections in a single year be­ ginning next year.

Gryphons Awards Night

Guelph athletes gathered for the Gryphons Annual Awards Night had good reason to be pleased with themse lves. As Director of Athletics David Copp has said more than once this year, "Our facilities are the least of any university in Canada, but our enthusi­ asm and dedication is the highest."

Top awards went to athletes of the year.

Michelle Turley of St. Thomas and Parri Ceci of St. Catharines. A third-year student, Michelle Turley earned her award for a bril­ liant season in field and ice hockey, while Parri Ceci will long be remembered for his second touchdown catch in the Vanier Cup game.

The Gryphon Club The Annual Report Another I'ecord year of participation sums up the 1984- '85 Gryphon Club ac­ tivities. The Annual Golf Tournament attracted a reco rd number of players and Adam Bmwn won his fourth consecutive title with a showing of six under par 66.

As usual. past accompl ishments rcached earth shattering proportions in posHiin­ ner conversations.

The Gryphon Club Fund campaign total reached a record high with 232 donations totalling $24,527. Projects funded during 1984 included travel bags for the hockey team. matching golf bags for the golf team. the establishment of a Hall oJ' Fame Lounge at th e Ahtletics Centre, a Christmas training camp for th e swim team, uniforms for ollr cheer squad. a pre-season trip to England for the tield hockey team. and a chipped-ice machine and whirlpool for the training room. It truly was a chamrionship sea­ son for the GI)'phon Club.

Since the inception of the Club, the Fund has raised over $75,000 and has provided many pieces of esse ntial equip­ ment and numerous vital services fOI' the athl et ics pl'ogram at Guelph.

While these sports brought furth er renown to the campus , the spirit of the Gryphons was ably demons trated by a number of tcam s. TI1e Women's Field Hockey and Basketball teams , both coached by Karen Lee and short on su­ perstars but long on effort and teamwork, surpl'ised everyone with their season­ long improve ment and advanced to the OWIAA semi-finals.

The Men's Badminton squad, under the tutelage of Steve Redmond , advanced to the OUAA semi-finals for th e tirst time in recent memol)" while the M en's Basketball team of Dave Arseneault re­ bounded to a 6-6 league record and fOllrth-place finish.

There were also two provincial team champions and five-individual associa­ tion titles won , while no less than 20 GI),phons LOok league AJI-Star honours and one was named All-Canadian.

The run at success began in mid­ October as thc Golf team, under thc di­ rection of coach Dick Frceman. won their first Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) title and the Ruttan Cup by a whopping 14 stroke margin at Kitchener's Westmount Golf and Coun­ try Club.

In November, the Football Gry­ phons became th e well-publicized stOI), of the year as they beclmc the CIAU and Vani er Cup Champions with a victory ovcr Mount Allison. Previousl y, the Gryphons won the OUAA titlc with a victol), over Western and then defeated defending champion Calgary Dino saurs before 8,571 f,lns at Alumni Stadium.

A $13 Million Federal-Provincial Effort

Government grants worih $13 million, which were announced last April, will go towards refurbishing the ave.

Classroom and laboratory facilities at the College will be improved.

Federal Agriculture Minister John Wise, OAC '56A, made the long-awaited announcement after turning the sod for an animal pathology laboratory on Stone Road.

That new Agriculture Canada building will be the first tenant in the University's techno­ business park. At a cost of $5 million, it will be completed by late 1986. and will replace the existing lab on Gordon Street, which will be taken over by the University for other purposes.

The $13 million grant to the OVC is "a federal-provincial effort coming together," Wise said, noting that each level of govern­ ment will contribute $6.5 million.

He agreed the grants might be inter­ preted by some as a Tory Ontario election plum but said " it's not a political thing."

The Minister said he feels that the grants to the OVC are extremely important because "its accreditation is on the line."

In 1983, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) granted the College continued accreditation on con­ dition that facilities be upgraded within five years. "They (the AVMA) pretty much gave them (the College) an ultimatum," Wise said. "It's a very contentious issue."

The AVMA sets standards for veterin­ ary medical facilities in North America and the Minister said "this is a matter of national importance and international recognition."

The AVMA standards committee also of­ ficially represents the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CV MA). Two CVMA observers are involved in all of the AVMA's Canadian assessments.

"I am now confident that the limited accreditation on the College will be lifted in rea'>onably short time, " said President Burt Matthews, OAC '47, in response to the funding announcement. "The role of the OVC in serving the needs and preserving the enviable health status of the $8-billion Ca­ nadian livestock industry is significant, " the president said. " The OVC must thrive in order to meet our national needs, as well as

to preserve our export trade. The export of cattle semen and embryos alone totals $21 million annually. " Originally designed to handle 60 new students annually, the College, which is the oldest and largest in Canada, has been trying to teach 120.

In the past, capital expenditures in the area of veterinary medici ne have been shared between federal and provincial gov­ ernments. "This has been on the boards for a long time and the fcderal money will go a long way towards correcting some of the problems," OVC Dean Ole Nielsen, '56, said. "We've been waiting for the federal money and the provincial government is al­ ready committed 10 the project," advised Don Jose, OAC '49, media relations officer with the University's Department of Infor­ mation Services.

Tenders for the classroom and lab up­ grading were called late last year on the first phase of the project, but the contract wasn't let because the University didn't have a signed commitment from Ottawa . Con­ struction began last month. 0

The archives of the OVC museu m contain a le tter from the late Or. Kenneth Chester, '07, Vancouver, B.e. , in which refe re nce is made to the original crest of the OVC , a horse's head surro unded by a ho rseshoe. Dr. Chester sent one of these c res ts, in the form of a sterling si lver watch charm , to the late Or. J,G. Glover, '20, Guelph, to be added to the memorabilia in the OVC mu se um (non-existent in 1960). In turn Dr. Glover gave this watch charm to Or. ClifT Barker,

'41, for safe keeping and deposition in any museum establi shed at OVe. The watch charm shown in the accom­ panying photo is the o ne donated by Dr. Chester, catalogued as item 952- 1 in the OVC mu seum . Cl ose exa mination reveals the number " zero" on o ne end of the s hoe and " five " on the o ther. Dr. Chester regis­ tered as a fre shm<\ll at the OVC in the fall of 1905 ,' g raduatin g in 1907, a nd it is most li ke ly that he obtained the c harm soo n after arriving in Toronto. It mus t have been fa­ s hionable for OVC s tud ents to display these watch-charm crests on their pocket watch chains, danglin g as th ey s tretched across between pockets , visible when th e suit jacket was open.

What might have been the model from which the crest wa~ des igned ? OVC Prin­ cipal Andrew Smith was th e au thor of the book Veterinary Notes , fir st publi shed in 1885 and revi sed in 1889 and 1902 , and on the title page of eac h issue of the book (see reproduction this page ) is the sa me c rest as that of the watc h c ha rm.

There is good evidence thus to support the statement of Dr. Chester th at the watch charm crest was the orig in a l crest of the OVe. Strangely thoug h, the OVC stat ionery of the 1890s does not utili ze the crest but

Doing it the HardWay

Thi s article, I rea lize, is stepping out of our "mode." Usually we restri ct our profile s to grads. Yet such is th e " gutsiness" of student Jill Singleton , that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to tell you of her determInation and staying power when she se ts her sIght s on a goa l. Her goal i s to be a CSS grad, to obtain a degree in Sociology.

She fully expec ts to graduate in 1986 and I know that she will. From there it will be a stepping stone to active participation ih our Alumni Association. If she becomes as dedicated to our A ssoc iation as she has bee n in her determination to get a degree, we 'll gain from her valuable input.

After four years of hi gh school, Jill attended Sheridan Coll ege in a two-year cor­ rec tional work er course. Her placement dur­ ing that time was at the Vanier Centre for Women in Brampton. At 18 years of age she demonstrated such an incred ible sense of responsibili ty and dedication to her position that there was no hcsitation on the part of management in hiring her as a full-time per­ manent corrections officer.

She had potential. Now, don't misun­ derstand me when I say, "had" potential.

I'm not suggesting it was lost or forgotten, but in such a setting, where the ratio of staff to incarcerated is ex tremely high, it 's easy to bec ome lost in day-to-day activitie s and for­ gotten wh en advanc ement tim e co mes around.

Not for Jill, though. After a few years, she knew there was more for her out there in th e professional world and much, much more for her to give, if the opportunity to do so arose.

One stumbling block was the lack of a degree, and it was not long before she was followi ng in the footsteps of one of her su­ pervisors by registering in the B. A. program with the University 's School of Part-time Studies and Continuing Education.

Th at was in the Winter Semester of 1980, and she has managed to continue to carry two courses a semester continuously since then - no easy feat along with a full­ time job involving shift work and negoti at­

ing changes of shifts to accommodate her studies. Only those who have experienced working in corrections know this is an insur­ mountable feat at time s; and th at only a person with "gut s" can achieve it.

Study and work were not the full focu s of Jill's bu sy lifestyle. She took time out to

class-time and made alternate arrangements for tests. " I also as ked Jill if she had any crit­ icisms of Guelph . She ca me up with a rec ­ ommendat ion for a change. Th ere i s a need for a better mechanism for registration of part -time stud ent s. Pre-registrati on during day-time hours on spec ifi c days can cau se probl ems in lost pay and, sometimes, in the credibility of the student with co-workers.

Also, repetitive courses can del ay pro ­ gress. Jill say s, "Somehow, administration has got to find a way to set up the part-tim e program so that a person can foll ow right through and obtain all the required courses seq uenti all y. At present , this can only be done by attending another university, one that offers the required courses on letter-of­ permission.

Well, admini stration , it looks like we need t6 give thi s matter close sc rutiny and introduce some necessary changes to pro­ gramllling to assist our pan-timers in reach­ ing their goals.

Mind you, Jill will be the first to tell you that without the help and co-operation of Mike and Laura thin gs would be a lot tougher.

Asked for advice she mfght have for other would-be part-time students, Jill says, "Give it a try - it require s some spare time and a littl e effort, but the satisfaction at the end of each course is well worth it. " Asked what she had to say of the U. of G. , she responded, "I've discovered many things about the University. The most promi­ nent that keeps coming to me is the flex­ ibility and understanding of the professors - they always found time to help me get throu gh my studies. They were very under­ standing when my job hours interfered with

He's a Political Intern

Congratulations to Michael Kaczo­ rowski, Political Studies, '84, who has been accepted into the Canadian Political Science Association's Pari iamentary Intern­ ship Program.

Michael is enrolled as a grad student with the College's Department of Political Studies and his supervisor, Professor Jack Happy, had this to say about Michael's achievement. " The parliamentary intern­ ship is the most prestigious of the awards won by Michael, an appropriate testimony for the dedication to scholarship whieh has characterized both his undergraduate and graduate work with the Department of Pol it­ ical Studies."

Of the some 200 who apply for the annual program in January of each year, 25 are selected for interviews in Ottawa. From these. ten are offered ten-month, September -to-June. internships. the salary for which is $9.000. He will be required to provide his own room and board.

Michael will be working, until the intern­ ship begins. as a research assistant with the FederallProvincial Relations Office. in Ot­ tawa. monitoring dcliberations of the Spe­ cial Committee on Senate Reform.

His duties will take him to Queen's Park, to the National Assembly in Quebec City and to Great Britain to study varying Parliamen­ tary procedu res.

Theresa Greer, '79, graduated with a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology and then spent a year working as a mental retardation counsellor at the Oxford Regional Centre.

Woodstock. She continued her studies and, in 1981 . graduated from McMaster Univer­ sity with a B.s. w.

She married a Guelph grad. Murray Greer, B_Sc_ '79, in September. 198], and they liveu in Mississauga for a while. They are now well established in their new home . at 1239 Pallantinc Drive, Oakville.

Theresa 's advice to future grads is: achieve your educational goal along with positive career planning. These. she firmly believes. are requisites for a successful and productive life.

Theresa currently works predomi­ nantly with adolescent people who are. by and large, school drop-ollts or have less than grade 12 education. She experiences their despairat having little in life to look forward to. Given Theresa's attitude toward s her own goal s. we believe her inrluence on those she counsels will only reap positivc results.

in a pub in London, England . and travelling the British Isles for the remaining period of her visit.

When she returned to Canada, she worked. until the end of 1982. in the Depart-· ment of Psychology at the University and also at a day camp in Toronto. After that she was involved in a special education course at the University of Toronto and then on to a diploma course in deaf education at the Teacher Education Centre on the campus of the Sir James Whitney School for the Hear­ ing Impaired in Belleville.

Vivian is presently working for the York Region Board of Education where she is an itinerant teacher for the hearing im­

paired. She works with six students at four schools in the Newmarket and Keswick area, and thoroughly enjoys her Job .

She believes her studies at Guelph provided the valuable groundwork. which she was able to develop further with addi­ tional stud ies, that enable her to feel com­ fortable while moving in varied occupa­ tional .areas.

She has been very busy since she left Guelph, and her plans for the immediate future include more of the same. She's aim­ ing to obtain a Master's in deaf education at York University in the next few years. We wish her every success and fulfillment in her chosen field. 0

Some of That CBS Talent

This article revolves around the subject of bird carving, and illustrates the extent to which students may influence their pro­ fessors or lab instructors. Bird carving is an ancient a11. In North America it began with the Indians who used decoys for hunting.

Their first decoys were birds they had stuffed with straw and , later, they began carving wooden ones.

Nowadays, decoy carv ing is much more than simply making wooden ducks for hunters - it's an art. There are competitions for artists with categories that range from birds of prey to songbirds.

When carving birds , Uta Renate Strelive recrea tes nature as perfectly as pos­ sible. Uta, a parasitology research tech­ nologi st and lab instructor with the De partment of Zoology, was not always so enthusiastic about carving. A native of Ger­ many, she began working as a technologist for Dr. Roy Anderson at the University in 1965 and, at the same time, worked as a free­ lance artist creating illustrations forbiolog­ ical publications and manuals. Uta became interested in wildlife carving a number of years ago when " a certain Zoology student"

began entering decoy-carving competitions.

That student is now a full-time world-cham­ pion wildlife carver.

In 1981, Paul Burdette, a woodcarving world champion, offered lessons to students and they soon became his enthusiastic fol­ lowers. This "certain Zoology student," to­ gether with Uta Strelive and our own Professor Ed Bailey were among those fol­ lowers.

Uta's first carving, "Chickadees," won first prize at a Canadian National Sports­ men's Show in Toronto, and she has since claimed many first prizes both nationally and internationally.

In 1984, Uta repeated her Canadian National Sportsmen's Show triumph by win­ ning first prize and best of show for her "American Kestrel." For her "Woodcock" and miniature "Bob-white Quails" at the International Woodcarving Exhibition at the C. N. E. , she received more firsts and best of show. As a free-lancer, she is currently working on an owl clutching a moth and has been commissioned (by none other than our famous Professor Keith Ronald) to carve 12 pieces depicting North American seals.

Carving a bird begins with a lot of research. Professor Ed Bailey, animal be­ haviour expert and Zoology Professor at Guelph, spends many hours studying a bird's colouration, habitat, way of life and eating habits before beginning to carve. He became interested in "a certain student" in the Department of Zoology and was very impressed with that student's carving ability.

Ed was influenced enough to register for the Burdette carving lessons in 1981 and, inci­ dently, was in the same class as Uta. Dr. Bailey has also won a "bundle of ribbons. " In 1982, at the C. N .E. Interna­ tional Woodcarving Exhibition, he received a second for his "Goldfinch" and a third for his "Cardinal." He came in second at the World Championships , novice class, with a miniature "Brant." Last fall he won first prize and best of show for his "Humming Bird" and first for a miniature "Blackbellied Plover." His current carving project is a pheasant - his most ambitious attempt to give motion and life to a piece of work.

Who was that "certain student" who influenced the lives of a professor and a lab instructor? Why, none other than the famous world champion Pat Godin, B.Sc. '77, M.Sc. '78. Ed Bailey has joked to Pat that "I taught you what you know" (although it . wasn't carving that Ed taught Pat!).

Pat Godin, a wildlife biologist by train­ ing, turned to full-time carving almost im­ mediately following graduation, and today he is one of the continent's highest-paid car­ vers. A Brantford, Ontario, native of Aca­ dian descent. he has won six Canadian national championships and four world championships.

Pat Godin fashioned his first decoy at the age of 15 and he was hooked. He com­ bined his intimate knowledge of taxidermy. anatomy, colour and feather patterns to pro­ duce uncannily life-like subjects.

In recent years, Pat has occasionally turned his attention away from decoys and has executed some decorative life-sized birds in natural settings.

Within the CBS there are many gifted members (alumni, faculty, staff, students) possessing a wide array of talents. This arti­ cle focu ses on three such members. 0

Retirement

Dr. Elmer Anthony.

Earlier thi s year, a large group of faculty, staff and graduate students congregated in the· vertebrate anatomy lab to honour Dr. Elmer Anthony, a highly regarded professor and a man they had all come to admire and re spect.

Dr. Roy Anderson introduced Dr. An­ thony as a pioneer - the first in Ontario to recognize the need for biologists to be com­ puter literate. Dr. Anthony was congratu­ lated and thanked for his pioneering efforts, his enthusiasm, hi s dedication, and was pre­ se nted with a gift, which can be seen in the photograph. Dr. Anthony was obvious ly thrilled because he let out a long whistle ­ in his familiar manner.

Alumni and students will remember Dr. Anthony for hi s A. P. L., his courses in Comparative Chordate Anatomy, Evolution, Computers in Biology, Cell Biology, and prior to these, his courses in Biology (100 and 200 level). He plans to travel to England and will visit Charles Darwin's stamping grounds. 0

In Memoriam We sad ly report the death of David E. Jushkevich Jr., '84, Microbiology, who di ed at the Toronto General Hos pital on March 22, 1985 , following an illness. David had been employed as a microbiologist at Canada Packers since graduation. 0

AWARDS

CBS student Mary Rae, of Brantfurd, is the first recipient of the Ronald Ko schol­ arship, awarded to the student with the high­ est grade in the Parasitology course in the Department of Zoology.

The scholarship is from income gener­ ated by a trust fund established by Dr. Ko, a parasitologist who received his Ph. D . in Zo­ ology from Guelph in 1971. Now a professor at the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Ko maintains a great interest in his Canadian Alma Mater, and was a visiting professor here in 1982.

Thomas Drysdale, a Zoology student at Guelph, has received second prize in the Honeywell Futuri st Awards Competition.

He was one of six Canadian students chosen on the basis of their prediction on the tech­ nological developments of the next 25 years and their impact on society.

Stan Megraw, '75, Fisheries, of Domtar's Department of Research and En­ vironmental Technology, Senneville, Que., is one of 12 sc ientists and engineers to be awarded industrial post-graduate schol­ arships in the first competition for the hon­ our. The awards are sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Resea rch Council of Canada.

OAC AA Honours Faculty

Three University of Guelph faculty mem­ bers were honoured during a recent presen­ tation, by the OAC Alumni As sociation, for their effective contributions to the life and work of the Ontario Agricultural College and to agriculture in Ontario.

Professor William Braithwaite, of the School of Agricultural Economics and Ex­ tension Education, received the OAC Alumni Distinguished Teacher Award ; Pro­ fe ssor Douglas Ormrod, Depar1ment of Hor­ ticultural Science , received the OAC Alumni Distingui s hed Re searcher Award, and Professor Thomas H. Lane, '49, De­ partment of Land Reso urce Sc ience, re­ ceived the OAC Alumni Di s tingui shed Extension Worker Award.

Bill Braithwaite is known for his excel ­ lence in communicating with student s in the classroom, for his innovative approach in introducing new tec hniques, and for hi s pi­ oneering efforts in introducing computer tec hnology in the classroom.

In addition to hi s normal classroom activities, he has bee n actively involved in management short courses and in the Ad­ vanced Management Program for the Hospi­ tality Indu stry (AMPHI) offered by the :Univers ity 's School of Hote.1 and Food Ad­ :ministration. Bill, who is a chartered ac­ countant, attended sc hools in Oshawa and received degrees from the University of Western Ontario and McMaster University.

He has bee n a faculty member at Guelph since 1959.

Professor Douglas Ormrod came to the University in 1969 as chairman of the De­ .pal1me nt of HOr1icultural Scie nce. Hi s re­ 'searcb effor1s have been primarily related to the environmental ph ys iology of hor­ ti cultural c rops and air pollution problems of agriculture in general.

He has maintained a hi gh level of sup­ port from the Natural Sciences and Engi­ neerin g Research Council as well as other sources , and under hi s supervision II stu­ dents have completed their studie s fo r the Ph .D. degree and 30 for the M.Sc. degree.

Conservation Society of America; pi ­ oneered such concepts as so il judging com­ petitions for junior farmers, and promoted soil te s ting and on-farm demon s tration plots. He has been a leader in promoting reduction in both depth of tillage and amount of tillage on Ontario farms. His studies of mlcronutrie nt s in crop produc tion led all of NOr1h America in this work .

Tom has always been a strong ad vocate of the use of a nimal manure in crop produc­ tion. As animal populations rose in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he, along with two or three others, sampled manure and visited farm s to draft reco mmendation s for manure use. Those recommendation s se rve Ontario farmers well, and have been copied across Canada. 0

Tom Lane, '49, is well known across Ontario for his understanding of farmers' problems and for his c lear forc eful expres­ sion of practical so lutions to those prob­ lem s. He has been a frequent and popular speaker at short courses arid farm meetings.

Joining the OAC fac ulty in 1951 , he quickly became involved in farm planning, includ­ in g drainage, cropping prac tice and rota­ tion s, fer1ility maintenance and reforesta­ tion.

Jim John stone, chairman of the Mar­ keting Board, made the announcement at the Board's annual meetin g. He s tated that "although present campaigns have main­ tained egg consumption, they have not in­ creased the use of egg s s ig nificantl y. It is hoped that this new pos ition will enable more rese arch into marke ting with the ob­ jective to increase the overall use of eggs.", The chair will be supported by an en­ dowment of $1 million , placed in trust , and the income used to SUppOr1 an indi vidu a l who will concentrate on developing new uses for egg s. The endowment will initially be for te n years, after which time the pro­ gram will be reviewed and either terminated or re newed. 0

I n most of the world, if a cow eats it, it's maize, if humans eat it, it's corn. For 11 years [ was in vo lved in developing hybrid maize.

It's an interestin g story, but I'll tell only three chapters.

[n 1965, and in the employ of Stewart Seeds, of Ail sa Cra ig, [ was in Jam aica in charge of the winter nursery in which l was supposed to be developing a hybrid corn suited to th e colder areas of the world, a corn th at would thrive in th e Ottawa Valley, th e Eastern Townships, the Canad ian Pra iries, England, and northe rn Eu rope.

I had been given one lb . each of four inbred lines and had garnered a few more. [ was in Jamai ca to increase the breedi ng ma­ terial and to make crosses, th e merits of which could be tested in Ontario the follow­ ing summer. [t was cold in Ont ario. but in wa rm Jamaica we could grow corn ye ar­ round . [n Febru3IY o f that year, I received a visit from a Dr. Bob Brown wh o was my much mo re experi enced counte rpart with Pioneer Seeds. He asked me how [ liked Jamaica as a site for a winter nursery and on learning my negati ve answer as ked, "Where woul d you go to find a better place"" My answer, while not in th ese words. added up to, "Last ni ght I was looking at Ill y atl as and noted that Chri st Church, New Zealand, a nd Toronto, Ont ari o, have th e sa me latitude, exce pt that o ne is in th e Southern Hemi sphere and one is in th e Northern Hemisphere. A move to the so uth would solve th e probl em of day leng th which dwarfs our corn here. Somewhere on one of New Zea land's two main islands there had to be an area suited to corn . " That night, in th e hotel, [ ma de a rath er rash state ment. [ was talking to a Jam a ican wom an and said, " Joyce, ton ight I'm goi ng to make a statement and yo u wat ch to see what happens, Before I hni sh working for Stewart Seeds, ['II be ope ratin g a winter nursery for them in New Zeal and."

Chapter Two

On October 2() , 1972, I awoke in my hote l room in Patmerston North on New Zea land's North Isl and and , during th e

mornin g, visited the plant products labora­ tory of the Departme nt of Agri culture. There [ was given th e corn that had been taken from me by the quarantine in spectors at Auckland th e previou s day.

1 was to ld that a Dr. Rain bow at Levin , on the wes t coast at the south end of Notlh [sland, wo uld give me furth er instmcti ons.

There we re 100 packages, eac h co nt aining 20 seeds of va ri ous lines th at we at Stewa rt Seeds had developed over the pl'evi ous scven years. They were to be planted in a spec ifl.ed iso lation plo t and th e plants were to be peri odically examined for di sease symp­ tom s. They would be destroyed if any dis­ ease showed up.

So my prophecy of 1965 had prove n to be true, and I was about to operate a winter nu rselY for Stewa rt Seeds in New Zealand.

It's true, th e nurselY co ntained onl y a poss i­ ble 2,000 plants and , if yo u consider that normall y you find about 2,400 plants in an acre of co rn , we mus t be somew hat modest when we mak e that statem cnt.

C hapter- Thr-ee

This ye ar, in Jan uary. nine ye a I', since I retired and ten yea rs since Stewart Seeds, becau se of the ir success in th e producti on of hybrid com seed, was purchased by ClBA­ GE IGY, I revis ited New Zealand and went to see the winter nurse ries now be ing oper­ ated th ere. Gisborne, on th e eas t coast of North Island. had proved to be more suited to corn production than Levin and, after the fl.rst year, we had shift ed to that area. The opera ti on had been vcry successful and Dr. Bob Brown , Dr. Bruce Hunter. OAC '62. and I made a tour of the plots. No longer were th ey co nfin ed to 2.000 seeds and no lo nge r was there only one co mpany in­ volved.

England, France, Germany and Can­ ada were all rep resented by w intel' nursc ries and it took us a whole aft ernoo n to co mplete the tour. It 's (rue that many were isolati on plots and reach ing the m involved a lot of driv ing. but. all th e same, it too k a whol e afternoon to look the m over.

As we walked aillong the stalk s. my memory relived th e eX[lerien ces involved in Illy corn breeding etlo rt s. I'd started with iust a hatful of seed in 1965; I'd made man y crosses. had moved fro m Jam aica, to Argen­ (ina to New Zeal a nd: Stewart Seeds had prospered and been so ld l'or a large SUIll : [ had sa id to Dr. Brown . "Chris t Church, Ncw Zea land , and Toronto, Ontario, have the same latitude." And. to Joyce. Norry OIA Pres.

Herb Norry, '52, M.Sc. '66, was installed as the 26th President of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists (OIA) at the Institute's An­ nual Conference in New Liskeard in April.

In his presidential address, he stated that the Institute can be most effective if it works co-operatively with other organiza­ tions, businesses and groups who have sim­ ilar goa ls.

A strength of the institute is the diver­ sity of occupations of its members. The members . all of whom have degrees in agri­ culture or the equivalent, are farmers and bu si nessmen . extension workers . and re­ searc hers, lawyers and legislators, teachers and salesmen. Such membership can provide balanced information about ag ri­ cultural issues.

An example of recent co-operation be­ tween the Institute and others is the film "You're Needed in the Food System," pro­ duced by Doug Robinson, OAC '53, at Summit Films. The film , produced primari­ ly for the benefit of teenagers, was con­ ceived and planned by the OLA and was finan ced with the help of the Ontario Minis­ try of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) and

several organizations and businesses. It is available from the OMAF film library at the University of Guelph.

Herb Nony is a native of Kent County.

He worked for OMAF for 32 years in various agricultural extension positions in the Brantford, Arthur, Peterborough, Brampton, Perth and London areas. He currently oper­ ates his own farm-business consulting firm, Herb Nony and Associates, London. He and his wife, Jean (Davis), Mac '52, live in London.

Bradish, '67, Hosts Plowing Match Tom w. Bradish, '67, and his wife, Helen, will be hosting the International Plowing Match, to be held this year in Elgin County, September 17-21. Tom and Helen's I,OOO-acre cash crop and dairy cattle opera­ tion is at Glanworth, near St. Thomas.

This year, greater emphasis will be placed on the agricultural aspects of this outdoor farm event. Ken Lantz, OAC '45, former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, thinks that as there are many trade shows and other events for rural people, this one should serve the interests of the farm community.

The committee respon sible fo r the match, with Ken as chairman, is considering various recommendations to improve this event which attracts scores of thousands of people from all over Ontario each year. It is an event looked forward to by many as an opportunity to combine a holiday with a learning experience.

Organization oJ the event has been un­ derway for some while and Tom reports that the experience is intriguing and tremen­ dously exciting. " I'm very mucha loner and use d to making my own deci s ion s ­ quickly." He said, " Dealing with politicians and committees is something very new to me, and, sometimes, their careful and drawn-out deliberations are very fru strat­ ing Producing vegetables on a long-term contract basis, he cannot suspend normal operations on the farm - match or no match. "Hosting the show also involves a long-term commitment, during which I have to maintain those contracted deliveries. So far, it's been quite a juggling act, and I sus­

pect it will become eve n more so as the show date approaches."

Tom hopes that he'll be meeting hoards of Guelph alumni - and urges their full participation. 0

OAC's Astronaut

Receives

Vanier Award

Dr. Roberta "Bobbie" Bondar, '68, one of Canada's astronauts, was one of fi ve re­ cipients of the Vanier Award for 1984. The winners are selected for outstanding achievements.

After graduation from Guelph, Dr. Bondar attended the University of Toronto and did her intership in Internal Medicine at Toronto General Hospital. Her many awards include a Ministry of Health Fellowship for Neuro-opthalmology study in Boston, Mass. ; a Medical Research Council Fel­ lowship; Sportswoman of the Year, 1963; and Woman of the Year Awards for 1983 and 1984.

Dr. Bondar is director of the multiple program in Neuro-opthalmology, Depart­ ment of Medicine at McMaster University, Hamilton, and her expertise in thi s field is , no doubt, extremely valuable as a member of the Canadian astronaut team . She is a graduate of whom the College is most proud. Congratulations, Bobbie, on being chosen for this award. 0

Right Gene in Good Combination

Dr.

Ernie Reinbergs, M.S.A. '54, has spent 32 years deve lop ing new ce real c rop varieties at the OAC Department of Crop Science. As a crop scientist, he 's had a hand in bringing abo ut some wonderful advance­ ments.

"Ou r main a im has always been to in­ crease yields. But as soon as you start push­ ing up yield, 'other problems to sec ure it increase," he says.

From the beginning. he has been in­ volved in developing varieties that resist lodgin g and diseases - with the fin al hope of increas ing farmers' overall yields.

Hi s early efforts ce ntered on putting mildew re sistance into barley and rust resis­ tance into oats.

While the method of doin g thi s has changed, the princip le has remained the same. To develop a plant with a specific gene with a specific characteristic . plant breeders cross a variety havin g thi s gene, with the variety into which they want to put the gene.

By cross ing. they invariably pu sh together other genes from these two varieties.

Using this method. it takes six genera­ tions for these genes to sort out and stabilize.

In the end. they come up with many pure breeding lines. each one different.

Next comes several 'years of testing at differe nt locations to select the best com­ bination of genes. This includes the new disea~e-resist a nt o ne. " If they are lucky. a new variety may appear." Ernie says. "B ut most of the new genes are found in inferior lines and there­ fore you oftcn need several crosses back to the original variety before you com e up with a new line that has the right ge ne in a good com b inat ion ...

Thc same procedure is followed for every new characteristi c the breeders want to incorporate in a presant variety. This means a large breeding program. About 20 .000 to 30.000 selections are under tes t each year at the OAC. A change in barley breeding methods came in 1976 with the discovery - largely by chance - of a techn iq ue that co uld shortcn the time needed to produce pure breeding lines.

An experimcnt Ernie was conducting with Dr. Ken Kasha. crossing cultivated barley with a wild species. Hlfrdeu/n blllhoswn. didn't succeed. They continually endcd up with haploids ­ plants with only hall' the usual number or c hromosomes.

Kasha discovered that the haploids only possessed the chromosomcs or the cultivated barley. .. Jokinglly, I said to my colleague that

here we have a new bree ding method. I had no idea it would work on a practical sca le."

Ernie says.

The two decided to try it. Ken Kas ha concentrated on developing the technique of produ c ing hapl o ids and doubling them , while Ernie evaluated their poss ibilities and potential in new variety development.

"We didn't know if the plants would be stable orif we would ge t random sam ples out of the crosses - but it worked ... he says.

For their efforts. Ernie and Ken re­ ce ived the Grindley Medal from the Agri­ cultural Institute of Canada in recognition of their contribution to Canadian agri cu lture.

Their discovery of this haploid technique means pure-breeding barley lin es ca n be ob­ tained after two generations. in stead of six .

Barley breeders can now make crosses to mee t farmers' needs and can introduce a new variety in eight years instead of 12 .

Ernie ha~ also played a role in the intro­ ducti on of tritica le. a man- made cerea l cre ­ ated by crossing wheat with rye.

He he lped a colleague who was work­ ing with the Inte rnational Wheat and Mai ze Improvement Centre in Mexico set up cold hardines s test sites in Ontario and. through that work. introdu ced winter triticale lines to Ontario. He also helped to marke t a seed

dressi ng. Vitavax, that provided the first sys­ temic contro l of loose s mut in barley. seed dressing call ed Vitavax that provided the first sys temic control of loose s mut in barley.

While co ntinuing his work on oats. he introduced six new barl ey varieti es: Brant ( 1954), York (1958). Brock (1969 ). Trent ( 1972), Perth ( 1975 ). and Bruce (1977).

The first of these. Brant. was selected from a cross of a German barley variety with OAC 21, a cross made by Ernie 's predeces- .

When lod g in g became a problem w ith Brant . he turned hi s attention to finding a variety with stronger straw. Thc next variety with better lodg ing resistance was York, but York was very susceptible to loose smu t and he turned his attention to breeding for loose smu t resistance.

Brock and Trent followed . but still a stronger straw was needed. Perth was later rel eased and remains th e barley variety most resistant to lodging. Some time later, when farmers wanted an earlier-maturing variety.

Bruce was developed.

FACS Will Have Best In Canada!

The Mac-FACS Alumni Association's Spe­ cial Project Committee is on the move. Our Alma Mater Fund repre sentatives have agreed to support an exciting and extremely worthwhile initiative, and the College of Family and Consu mer Studies will soon have a model pre-school play area facility.

There will be none like it in Canada when the project is comple ted.

At prese nt, the Family Studies Lab Schools offe r seven programs that involve children ranging in ages from 2 month s to 5 years. These programs accommodate more than 100 children per se mester. Under the supervision of a faculty member and an as­ s istant. the programs are staffed largely by students enrolled in the practicum courses.

A total of 120 students can be in the labora­ tory in anyone academic year for a total of 143 hours per semes ter.

The Lab Schools are used as a resource for the Depa rtment of Family Studies and the College in general. For instance, re­ search has been conducted by faculty in the Applied Human Nutrition major and Con­ sumer Studies using families in the Lab School s. Graduate student groups in the Marital and Family Therapy program have conducted parent studies, and other groups, from areas such as Psychology and Human Kinetics, make use of the facilities for re­ search as well.

You will gather that the Lab Schools are very busy places. Important needs for the Department of Family Studies , and for the University community as a whole, are being met. Furthermore, the Lab Schools make a significant contribution to th e lives of the children in attendance. We are proud of the qual ity experience that we have to offer these youngsters and the contribution we make to the community.

In order to maintain the commitments to teaching and research and provide an en­ riched early childhood program, we need to keep the physical setting in good order. Fur­ thermore, as a teaching facility, we need to keep abreast of innovations and changes in

the design and safety of children's equip­ ment.

College faculty . and resource people agree that the Lab Schools are badly in need of renovation. Some equipment has been deemed unsafe and other ite ms are deterio­ rating rapidly. The Mac- FACS Alumni As­ socia tion be lieves it is time for action.

HAFA Restaurant Management in Practice

A new restaurant on campus always creates a stir, but one managed and operated by University of Guelph stud ents is a novelty.

However, the appea ra nce of a rest aurant can be deceiving. The faculty of the School of Hotel and Food Administration (HAFA) prefe r to call th eir quantity food production co urse their "food serv ice system sim­ ulator. " For instance, if yo u visted an ae rospace centre and found a room with a large com­ puter replete with blinking li ghts and chat­ tering terminal s, you would understand th e guide who ex plained, " This is our system simulator. " Wh e n visitors co me to the HAFA re staurant , what they see loo ks famil ­ iar - and the food is real. But, the HAFA food service laboratory is a rich lea rning tool in which simulated real world "prob­ le mat ic si tuatIOn s" co nfront eac h stude nt with opportunities to lea rn.

Student Managers

In thi s course, students are able to put into practice the theo ri es they have learned in other co urses like cost control, purchas­ ing, marketin g, or accounting. They gener­ ally find that these theori es work, whether it is preventing enzymatic browning of fres h fruit , preparin g a budget, or planning a mar­ ket strategy.

Whi le yo u may see waitstaff busily at­ tending guests during your visit to the res­ taurant, th ey may be the managers of the next meal. Each day th ere is a management tea m of general man ager, food producti on manager and marketing manager and each has spec ific planning duti es necessary to put their re staurant into operat ion.

The general manager direct s and moti­ . vates th e tea m, projec ts sales and cos ts for the meal, and confirms the plans of the other managers. The food production mana ger is res ponsible for planning the menu for the day, determinin g the cost of the food, the purchase ord er, and writing large-qu antity recipes. The marketing nJanager may be tak­ ing campus surveys to find new mark et seg­ ments to dine in th e re staurant , or drawing posters, o r writing newspaper ad s and oth er promotional material s.

Since the de adline is real - and real people come to eat - the planning is metic­ ul ous (compared to a ho-hum paper where a stud e nt can make outlandish statements with little thought). The HAFA Program

The HAFA program is a relati vely new and fast-growing program at th e University of Guelph . Because of the demand for man­ agers in the hospitality industry, HAFA can­ not suppl y indu stry needs. " Hos pitality Industry" is a term used beca use of th e sco pe of th e indu stry. While many HAFA graduates e nter variou s man agerial pos i­ tions in restaurants and hotels, ranging from ass istant junior manage r to corporate ex­ ecutives of major hote l and food service chains, a number of graduates choose re­ lated fields lik e accounting, co nsulting , design , marketing, government , touri sm, supply and di stribution.

The HAFA program is an eight-se­ mester Honors Program which is, first of a ll, a profes sional studies co urse with busines s emphasis , but a lso draws en courses in the hum anities, soci al sciences, and physical and bi ological sciences. The HAFA Student Onl y one in e ight ap plicant s is ac­ cepted into th e HAFA program at the Uni­ ve rs ity of Gu elph . The en teri ng student ge nerally has a " B" average. In addition to being intellectually mature, all HAFA stu­ dents admitted in the past year have had work expe ri enc e, usually hosp itality re lated, before enterin g the University. During their four years at th e University, HAFA students are required to obtain industry-related expe­ rience and are enco uraged to seek super­ viso ry and managerial pos iti ons.

In an informa l survey of 40 third -year HAFA stud ent s, roughly half already had supe rvi sory or ma na ger ia l e xper ien ce.

HAFA students are also fun-l ov ing. Hav ing worked in industry. they are used to cri ses and are able to laugh at their mistak es, like th e day it was discovered th at the cook had put 100 ml in stead of 10 ml of pepper in the soup. Can I avoid sibling ri­ valry') These concern s typify so me of the iss ues addressed by the Parent/ Infant Group, an outgrowth of the University's Cry Clinic and Family Studies Lab School s Brenda Wiseman, ' 73, a Family Stud­ ies graduate student an d a parent group leader, believes th at parents Join the gro up beca use they want to do the bes t job possi­ ble. They recognize in fa ncy as an important slage in life and want to benefit from a sup­ port framework. " New mothe rs, tor example, are cut off fro m former supports because of their new role, " says Brenda. " Many don't have built­ in suppo rt such as an exte nd ed family th at they or their parents had. " Whatever th eir reason for joinin g , th ey need to know "they' re doing okay. " The program, whi ch bega n in the fall of 1984 , addresses parental con ce rn s a nd serves the University's teaching an d re­ search needs. Also invol ved is Professo r Margaret Mc­ Kim, Famil y Studies, director of the Cry Clinic. Barbara Stuart, '71, is the pro­ gram 's head teacher and supervisor. Th e pro gra m is div ided int o two gro ups. The first caters to infan ts 2 to 6 months of age; th e second ca ters to in fa nts 6 to 10 months of age. The progra m is struc­ tured such th at paren ts and children are ab le to soc iali ze before and after their separate hourl y sess ion s.

Id ea ll y, the groups contain an equal number of boys and girl s and, whercver pos­ sible, refl ect an eve n age distribution. Also, an effort is made to ens ure a represe ntative mix of fa mili es.

Parents are encouraged to share their co ncerns , and discu ss ions are planned on such topics as Ieeding and nutrition, alter­ nati ve care arran gement s , developmental norms and expectations, parentin g ·styles, ro les and role co nfli cts , support sy stems and parents' personal needs. In the e nd, "par.ents learn to enjoy their babies even more, " say s Dr. Brophy.

Besides serving an obvious need in the community. the program meets the aca­ demic and research needs of' the University.

Pare nts are aware of, and und erstand, this as pec t of all the program s in the La b Schoo ls. Graduate and undergraduate stu­ dents are directly invol ved wit h the program and, in additi on, students fro III othercourses often observe the ac ti vi ties of the Pare nt In fa nt group.

Infants' so phisti cation is surprising at time s. Eve n 8-month-old infants are abl e to diffe renti a te be tween fa mil ia r and un­ familiar faces, says Barbara Stuart. " Older babie s did not become as an xious as we expected when separated from their moth­ ers." This can be attributed to the familiari ty developed between staff and child .

Every two weeks , student helpers work with their indi vidua lly assigned children in the baby's homes. The students also gree t these infant s each time they alTive at ses­ sio ns. " Thi s famili arity helps us re ad what the babies are telling us," she says. " We can better predict whe n they are feeling stress."

The experience of workin g with the babies and the ir parents complements what students learn in ac ade mic co urses. Students learn how to operate a program for in fa nts and pare nts while deve lopin g the personal skills needed to relate to different c hildren an d th eir fami lie s.

Professor Fyfe, now on sa bbatical in California, plans to take up th e fe ll owship in his Guelph laboratory, where he will co n­ tinue work on a program to investigate and

characterize the structures and reactivities of a wide range of solid materials chosen l()r their theoretical and practical importance.

He uses a combinati on of high-power decoupling, cross-polarization and " mag ic angle" spinning techniques to obtain hi gh resolution spectra for dilute nu clei in the so lid state.

Hi g h-re so lution Nuclear Magnetic Re sonance (NMR) is widely used in c hcm ­ ist ry and biochemistry to charac teri ze the stru ctures of molecules in solution. Us ing the combined spec ialized tec hniques, Pro­ fessor Fy fe has examined commerciall y im­ porta nt so lid materials, inc luding zeo lites, coal, peat, glasses and ceramics. Many of th ese materials have eluded exami nati on be­ ca use they cannot be put in so lution , but sol id state NMR allows them to be studi ed. [n his submission to the granting com­ mittee, Professor Fyfe said it is important for university researchers to pass on their find ­ ings to the industrial community as we ll as to academic researchers in other fields. He rece ntly finished writing an advanced re­ search text on solid state NMR and plans to wri te anot her text on the subject for un der­ grad uates. 0

Peter Eyre, chairman of the Board of Graduate Studies and professor of bio­ medical sciences, told senators the pro­ posed program will provide graduate-level ed ucation for students interested in applica­ tions of computer science and will prepare slud e nts to apply advanced computin g methods in information technology. "This program is co ncerned with the computer and its re lati onsh ip to the external world, " he said.

The proposed program will focus on four areas - interactive software en viron­

me nt s, di s tribut e d sys tem s, info rmation management and kno wledge-based sys­ tems. Course req uiremc nts will be taught by th e 16 permanent CIS faculty, all of whom have experie nce in applied computer sci­ ence, CIS Chairman Jay Majithia told Sen­ ate. To graduate from the program, students wil.l need a minimum of four graduate-level co urses, mu st participate in a research semi­ nar, and must complete a th esis.

Six stud ents are expected in the first year of operation , wilh th at figure climbing to 24 within fi ve years. Students must have a four-year honors degree and a 75 per cent average to e nter the program. Because of the applied orien tation of the program , students with onl y a minor in computing are ex pected 10 be the most commo n applica nts. 0

Guelph faculty members are recip­ ients of ·th e Can ada Co uncil Killam Re­ search Fellowships. Co lin Fyfe, Department of Chemistry, and Michae l Ruse, Depart­ ment s of Phi loso phy and His tory, will take up the fellow ships in th e coming academic yea r at Guelph.

The awards were established, by the late Doroth y 1. Killam, to support sc ho lars of exceptIOn al ab ili ty and to dcvelop and ex pand the work of Ca nadi an uni ve rsities.

Designed to r es tabli shed schol ars who have demonstrat ed out standi ng ability th ro ug h substanti al publications in their fields , they are tena bl e for an initia l pcri od of up to two years.

Awards were madc thi s yea r to 21 of the more than 200 appli ca nts, and this is the first time since th e program was initiated in 1968 that a fellow ship has been awarded to a Guel ph faculty member.

Professor Rus e is well known for his work in the philosop hy of sc ience. His award is for a year, th e period he needs to complete hi s work on the relevance of Dar­ win's evolutionary theory to phi losop hy.

P rofessor Wolfgang Glaeser, of the Tech­ nical University of Munich, was a recent visitor in th e Department of Physics.

A neutron physicist, took advantage of the visit to Guelph to pursue research with Professo r Peter Ege!staff. In seminars at Guelph, Waterloo and M c Master, Professor fessor Glaeser shared some of these research interests and talked about physics in Europe.

One such seminar dealt with the use of neu­ tron-scattering techniques to get informa­ tion about the motions ot atoms in liquids.

With today's techniques, physicists are tind­ ing deviations from long-standing laws of phy si cs.

Professor Glaeser's associ ation with Professor Egelstaff dates back more than 2() years. "At that time, the English and North Americans were way ahead 01' the Euro­ peans in neutron physics. We came to North America to learn as much as we could."

Now the exchange 01' information is very much a two-way process. A shining example of European leadership is the In­ stitut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble ~ a Joint French, English and German nuclear reactor and research centre. The reactor at the In­ stiwte is the largest research reactor in Eu­ rope. Since thc Institute was built in the early 1970s, nuclear physics has really blossomed in Europe, Dr. Glaeser says.

The Institute of Grenoble is a Mecca for physicists as well as chemists, bio­ physicists and polymer physicists.

Scientists in German universities have the same concerns about research funding as their Canadian counterparts. Part of their research support comes from the uni ver­ sities; other grants arc sought from two federal granting agencies ~ one associated with the Ministry of Research and Tech­ nology,' the other, an independent granting agency, was set up by German universities after the First World War. On previous sabbaticals, Professor Glaeser worked at Oakridge National Labo­ ratory in Tennessee and at the Institut Laue­ Langevin in Grenoble. Early in his career, he spent several weeks at the Chalk River labo­ ratories of Atomic Energy of Canada.

"International communication and collaboration are necessary in science if we are to stay in the forefront and avoid becom­ ing provincial," says Professor Glaeser. He calls science "international entertainment" and speaks with obvious enthusiasm of his collaborative work with other European and North American scicntists. [J

The B .A. counselling office provides a comprehens ive academic service for all stu­ de nts in the B.A. progra m. Advice is given to prospec tive students , new students, in­ course students, and potential tran s fe r stu­ dent s regarding admission procedures , pro­ gram requirem e nts, course selection, and campus services and resources. Nancy as­ sists stude nt s who have academic problems and direct s them to the appropriate campus se rvic es. She also e xplains appeal pro­ cedures. Other duties includ e disc uss ing the B. A . program with high sc hool stude nts at March counselling and start sessions.

Recently, the University issued letters to more than 4,000 students who are close to completing a B.A. degree but who are no t currently taking courses. These students are being encouraged to take advantage o f the Uni vers ity's expanding Di stance Edu catio n Program and Spring Semester and Summer Sess ion courses to complete their degree s.

There has been a very good respo nse so far.

Many of th e respond e nts have a renewed interest in co mpl etin g degrees in order to expand career possibilities.

Clayton "Clay" Switzer OAC '51 any individuals have brought honour and recognition to th e University of Guelph , but few have done it so consistentl y as Clayton Macne " Clay" Sw it ze r.

He ea rned BSA and MSA degrees from th e OAC in 1951 and 1953, and atlended Iowa State University where he was gran ted a Ph.D degree in 1955. He joined th e Depart足 ment of Botany at the OAC following graduation and became chairman in 1967. He comple ted his second Ii ve-year term as Dea n 01' the OAC in 1983 and bec ame Deputy Minister, Ontario Mini stry of Agriculture and Food in January 1984.

An outstanding sc ientist, researcher, teacher and leader, he has made a lasting impact on an agricultural commu nity whi ch trusts, follows and admires hi m.

That Dr. Switzer has brought di stinction to hi s Alma Mater, is amply evident. 0
