The Value of a

University Education

by Ann Middle ton Many bright young people are being frightened away from universities as they seek solutions to the current problems of hi gh unem ployment. They may c'iler j ob-oriented training institutions or take the first job offered them in an attempt to secure the future.

W hat parents and high school graduates often don't realize is that long-term job security is no longer an assured possibility .

Students seeking careers in their late teens or early twenties need to learn to make choices. The jobs they train for in 1980 could be obsolete in 1985.

Although there is no doubt that growing technology will make many more jobs obsolete, that sa me growth will create new opportunities in the job field for people who are flexible enough to reorder their lives.

Universitie s can help prepare young people to make choices, an ability that grows in importance as our society diversifies.

However, when great change coincides with economic unrest and high unemployment, it is natural for the taxpayer to place a low priority on post secondary education. Similarly, high school st udents place emphasis on immediate job opportunities or job-oriented training.

Now is the time, then , for alumni to provide young people, society, and uni versities with a real service by explaining the value of a university education.

Confirming that value, data on unemployment rates published by Statistics Canada revealed that, in 1977, the rate of unemployment among university degree holders was 3.4 per cent. This figure

compares with an une mployment rate of 5 .3 per cent for graduates of co mm unity colleges and 9.3 per cent for these who had not received any post-secondary educa tion.

Not only do universities give their students a chance of more intensive learning than anywhere else, they also give the ir students the opportunity to develop their brains as fine instru me nts capab le of conceptual, analytical and sequential thought, an ability that is as essential to the development of the human potential as it is to earning a living . Students also feel the delight of expanding their intellectual capacity, an exploratory process that should prepare them for a lifetime of learning.

An equally important co mponent of uni versity education is the development of the ability to real ize one's own limitations.

Sir K arl Popper, the distinguished philosopher of science, placed gre at stress on the modesty that sho uld accompany learnin g when he received an honorary D. Litt. at the University of Guelph Fall C onvocation . H e told graduates, "It is worth tryin g to learn something about the wo rld, even if in trying to do so we merely learn to appreciate our ignorance." He pointed out that, "In spi te of our most important scientific knowledge and its phenomenal growth, we do not know for certain. Thus," he said, "a scientist may be a great and most admirable discoverer; but still he does not know, he must submit to criticism.

"W ith every new advance in knowledge we come face to face with new problems, so deep, so entirely new that

nobody cou ld eve n ha ve tho ught of the m before the new advance was ach ieved." In the face of this new kn o w ledge , Sir Karl said, it is essen tial that " those who m ade the advance are in the position to lea rn muc h abou t their limi tati ons" .

Geneti c ist D avid Suzuk i, who was on campus last fall, might also be described as a philosop he r of science . He told an ove rflow audience at a Mac-FACS 75th a nni versary lecture tha t people mu st expand their kno wl edge of the sciences. "The moral, philosophical and re ligious decision s that ari se from scientifi c stud ies are fa r to o important to be left to the sc ie ntists ," he said. The C anadian scie ntist critic ized universities for creating a sc hism bet wee n science and the humani ties. "No one w ho has com pleted only one co urse in psycholog y or geo gra phy can consider himself educated ," Dr. lI zuki said . "He is fooling hi mself and bei ng dec e ived by the university. " He called on uni versities to require humaniti es student s to study some basic science and science stude nts to broaden their education with study in the art s .

Both me n stressed the im portance of usi ng the brain to its full pote nt ial, and being able to learn from li mitati o ns , abilit ies that the student should develop at univers ity.

Yet their visit s came at a time when the value of university education, and particularly the merit of an educatio n in the arts and social sciences, is being attacked on all sides.

They also develop an ability to think in an organized and analytical manner while they learn to take an interest in a wide variety of fields , attrib utes that will enrich their lives, mak ing it more creative and meaningful into old age.

The Dean of the College of Arts, Tom Settle, warns that taking an Art deg ree is hard work. " T here's not much point in going to uni versity if your love of learning has entirely died, because hig her learning is a hard grind if you've no affection for it," he says . "But it' s very re w ardi ng if you've still a thirst to know how things work, what lies below the surface of life, how others live. I think knowing and appreciating what's so and what's good an d what's beautiful is more of the poi nt of being ali ve . " He does not overlook the diffic ulty Arts graduates have securing em ploy ment , bu t points out that there are still many jobs th at requi re a B .A ., as w 11 as others that are better served by employees w ith a background in the humani ties . T he B .A. gradu ate is a "better bet in a job that call s for ope nness of mind and cleverness at solving ne w problems," he says.

The University of Guel ph has a long tradition of educating peo ple to fit a variety of situations that require creati ve and ana lytic al minds. Agriculture graduates can be found in every employment sphe re from the art s to finance, government and indus try. The sa me career di versity is also found amo ng graduates of the other Colleges, and the tradition contin ues today.

Ma ny young people are not aware of the options that the Uni versi ty of G uel ph provides . Alumni have an im po rtant role to play in advis ing prospective stude nts of the value of the University, and can also offer valuable insights based on their own experiences both as students at G uelph and as members of the work force.

Alu mn i can also stimulate thought among colleagues and friends on educational choices. T he University does no t want students e ntering programs that are not right for them . Neither does it want students who would be much happier and more productive elsewhere .

We at the University of Guel ph would like you to tell prospective students about your Alma Mater. You can tell them G uelph has a beautiful cam pus; you can also tell them it's a great place to obtain their degree.

But the me ssage we really want you to get across is that G uelph is a place where they'lJ be cha llenged , where they will have a chance to expand their minds.

An executive wi ll be named from this group, and a prog ra m drawn up to enable alumni in various areas of the province to contact promis ing athletes and tell th e m about acad em ic progra ms at G uelph.

Identiflcation of female ath le tes is much more difficult as ma ny of them are now married. For th is reaso n, Shirley Peterso n, S upervisor , Wo men's Inte rcollegiate Athletics, would like to he ar from wome n graduates of the last 15 years w ho participated in ind ividua l o r intercollegiate spo rts.

Recent graduates w ill also be asked to participate in liais o n w o rk with promising young people in high schoo ls . Liaison activities, fairly new at C anadia n universities, are burgeo ning as institutions try to bolster enrolme nts that have dropped off well ahead of the predicted e nd of the growth in the ed ucation system .

The decline beco mes evident when one studies enrolment fig ures at G ue lph over the past few years. Full- ti me undergradu ate enrolment in the fall semeste r has dropped by more th an 900 in the past year . Act ual fi gu res are: F all 1976 - 9747 un dergradu ate s, 2917 of them ne w; Fall 1977 - 9750 undergraduates, 2796 of them new; Fall 19 78 - 8806 undergraduates, 252 1 of the m new .

Peggy Bennett, HAFA '76

One

In 3,182 Last December, 24-year-old Peggy Bennett, HAFA '76, and 3,1 8 1 others across Canada wrote the four-day uniform final examinations of the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Five days later, a sleepy Peggy, in her Hamilton apartment, rec ei ved an early morning 'phone call. It was from her employer.

"Congratulation s, Peggy! You 've won the Governor General' s gold medal and the Edmond G unn prize for the highest standing in Canada, and the Ontario Institute gold medal for the highest standing in Ontario."

For a person who had dissolved in tears after the first day of examinations at Hamilton Place - "I figured I'd flunked it ," admitted Peggy - the call came as a distinct shock.

She had a clue that she'd done well on the overall test when the head office of her firm , Deloitte , Haskins and Sells, Chartered Accountants, called her in from Mississauga for a photograph.

"I thought maybe I'd placed in the top ten or somethin g . I never dreamed I was first," she said. "It was very exciting."

A native of Cobalt , in Northern Ontario, and the daughter of an Ontario H ydro engineer, Peggy later li ved in North Bay and Abitibi Canyon and fi nished high school in Sudbury in 1972.

Ambitious to get post-secondary education, she applied at several universities but struck out when she was unable to obtain a student loan - unt il she approached the Univers ity of G uelph. " I was lucky enough to be selected by the College of Fami ly and Consumer Studies

During her fo ur yea rs of study at the College ' s Sc hool of Hote l and Food Admi ni stration she recei ved th ree in-course Carling O 'Keefe awards totall ing $2,500.

Following graduation, Peggy joi ned On tario Hydro in Toronto . W hen she left them for Deloitte , Haskin s and Sells in Hamilton in late 1976, she was alre ady well into an M .B .A. program . Since the n she has completed the necessary nine courses, involving acco untin g, audi ting and tax, w hile attending night cl asses at York Un iversity in Toronto , McMaster Uni ersi ty

in Ha milton and W ilfrid Laurier Uni versity in Wa terloo.

Asked how she'd managed to obtain top spot in a field of 3,182 aspiring chartered accountants, Peggy gave a shy smile as she revealed the secret of her success. " It' s called just plain hard work, self discipline and an ability to buckle down and study. " In black and white in the H .A. F.A. '76 year book that she treasures together with other Unive rsit y of Guelph memorabilia, the word s of her fellow students reflect their all-tao-true assessment of Pegg y' s charact er. " Our sweet young thing from the mining towns up north. She soon became known as a hard worker and a high achiever. Keep smiling Peg I" In September, Peggy will complete the mandatory three years of on-the-job accounting experie nce th at wi ll qu alify her as a Chartered Accountant. W hat then ?

"That' s a very good question. Things are up in the air right now," she said. "It's such a large field and there are so many optio ns. " De sc ribing he rself as "shy " , Peggy has a " stro ng di slike of big cities , w hich is a very real disadvantage for a C. A . I' m not sure which speciality I'll pursue, but to get into the fInesse of ta x, for instance, would take me right back to Toronto . " Peggy's di slike of large cities an d her acce pta nce of Hamilton reall y doesn ' t compute. " I don ' t kn ow why, but I'm strangely happ y here, " she confe ssed. " 1'11 settle for that for now despite the commuting ...

Peggy's job takes her out of M ississauga often and the d riving to and from Hamilton becomes very tediou s . Up at 6:00 a.m . and home somet imes we ll after 8:00 p .m . is routine. " It wo uld be just great to be ho me at 5:30, start supper and re lax, " she sig hed. "But I enjoy the variety of clients I get to visit - an d that's w hat makes it all worth while. " Peggy has come a long way si nce she was introduced to accounting at H .A .F .A. and, no doubt, she still has a lo ng way to go . •• Staff acc ountant to upervis or to manager. W ho kn ows?" she mused, "maybe even partner."

Flute A three-way joint venture involving the O .A .C . 's Arboretum, the De partment of the C urator of Art and the College of Arts' Di vision of M usic , with funding from the On tario Arts Council, "Flakes , Flumes and Flute" was an innovati ve o n-campus program designed to mel d the delights of nature's winter wonderlan d with the soothing strains of music.

A grey day with freezing rain and a chill wind failed to dampen the spirits of those who turned out in earl y afte rnoon to visit the Arboretum's J. C. Taylor Nature Ce ntre. After viewing the exhibits, some were introduced to snowshoes loaned by naturalist Al an Watson, CBS '75, and his crew who spent most of their afte rnoon strapping their customers into the sometimes awkward and unwieldy footwear.

tobogganers and skaters, the Victoria Woods nature trails and Victoria Pond, adjacent to the Nature Centre , must have presented amusement for the wood ' s natu ral inhabitants as the visito rs slipped, slid and stumbled the ir way around.

Despite the raucous sounds of re velry that ec hoed among the tall trees, all kind s of birds refused to be pertu rbed . T hey calmly continued their steady rifling of sunflower seeds from the man y well-stocked bird-feeders scattered throughout the woods.

Cookies and piping hot coffee welcomed those of the chille d explorers who chattered their way to the Arboretum Ce ntre to view an environmen tal snow sculpture and a concert featuring flutist Vicki Blech ta and pianist Cecilia Ignat ieff.

Unfortunately, lack of blo wi ng snow following the installation of a three- foot high deformed triangular me tal baffle , erected in an open area adjacent to the Arboretum Centre, resulted in the unfortunate non-appearanc e of the predic ted environmental snow scul pt ure.

Designed by artist Stephen Dryde n, Arts '73, the baffle was the product of many hours of research using a spec ial School of Engineering flume which sim ulates, with circulating water and suspe nded fine silica sand, the effects of wind and snow. It is used to determine leeward dri fting patterns around an object.

An overabundance of drifting mate rial is expected to be delivered , no doubt, during the remains of winter and the sculpture will ultimately appear.

By Pat Orr Bequests and memorial gifts are received by the University of Guelph through the Department of Alumni Affairs and Development. These gifts, which so often enable truly deserving recipients to obtain a university education which would otherwise be denied, take many forms, from property or valuable collections of such things as paintings and rare books, to money for specified or unspecified use. Gifts of money are often designated to be put into trust funds, and the resulting interest used for perpetual scholarships.

Most bequests are not made known until the donor is deceased, but a few have been carefully planned in advance with the University's awareness and, if needed, assistance. In the latter case, John Babcock, OAC '54, Director of Alumni Affairs and Development, will have met confidentially with the donor to discuss specified wishes and establish correct terms of reference.

Gifts in memory, on the other hand, are given by the living as lasting symbols of respect and love. Such gifts may honour deceased relatives or friends, or the donor may wish to honour someone still living so that both will enjoy watching the benefit of this action accrue. This kind of gift, too, can sometimes render tax advantages during the donor's lifetime.

Following are some bequests and memorials recently received by the University.

They iJlustrate how graduates and friends of Guelph have helped strengthen an already great institution with both generosity and vision.

The Lena Grothier Memorial Scholarships

Elena Augusta Orothier, known as Le na to her friend s, left $ 30,000 to the University to be divide d equall y between the Ontario Agricultural College and the College of Family and Co ns umer Studies .

T he daughter of Lillian Halliday and Ric hard Orothier, she spent her childhood in the small Leeds County town of New boro.

After attending the two- year No rmal program at MacdonaJd Institute , she graduated with a d iplo ma in Home Ma nage ment in 19 15. She tra velled considerably after graduation , teaching public school domestic science first in Ne lson, B.C. , and then in Wi nnipeg, Ma nitoba and Fort W illiam, O ntario.

Returning to New boro to take care of her father, Lena remained to retire there. In 1972 she entere d St. Lawrence Lodge , a nursing home in Brockville, where she died on Ju ly 25,1977.

Both Colleges will set up annua l Lena Oro thier Me mori al Scholarships for " Canadian students, most in need of assistance." The O .A.C. bas deter mined to award four annual $300 scholarships to stude nts in the B.Sc.(Agr.) program registered in the M inor in Intern ational Agriculture . The C .F. A .C. S. plans to award an annual $1 ,200 scholarship to a graduate student in either of the Department s of Fa mily Studies or Consumer Studies.

Joan Kathleen Doherty Born in Toronto in 195 5 , Joan Kathleen D oherty spent her childhood there, then with her parents, moved back to the family home in Sarnia in 1972. He r keen interest in clothing de sig n and dressmaking, coupled with art istic and creative capabilities, led her to Family and Consume r Studies in 1974 where she majored in texti les .

Joan assumed respon sibility exceptionally well and was adept at completing any undertake n projects. S he enjoyed life, and in the important things her actions were dlrected by pri nc iples w hich

Wh ile maintaining a vigo rou scholastic schedule and participating in other cam pus activities, she sti ll wa s able to spend man y weekends visit ing her fami ly an d he r fiance .

In the fall of 1977 , in her seventh semester of the B .A . Sc . progra m, she tragically lost her life in an automobile accident.

In their dau ghter' s memory , Tom an d Isabel Doherty , and other fam ily mem be rs and friend s, established an endowment of $18 ,750 to fund the annu al $1,5 00 Joan Dohe rty Me morial Scholarship . Joan had n' t just in herited the love and respec t of he r family, she had earned it. Th is scho larship reflects , in a small way , the hono ur she brought to them.

Terms of reference we re developed to correspond wit h Jo an's ow n personality 足 cand idates, in the Consum er St udies major, are active in curricular and extra-cu rric ular programs, and re peeted by stude nts and faculty ali ke fo r the ir character and sincerity . They are nomi nated by their own classmates for thi s award .

The firs t Joan Doherty Memorial Scholarship was announced and prese nted at the No vem ber 1, 1978 Awards Prese ntation . while many of Joan's fr ie nds were still in sc hool. Winner of this initial award was Flora "Beth" Pa rk, F ACS ' 79, of Scarborough.

Anne Grimstad hono ured the memory of her husband by donating $ 10 ,000 fo r the establis hment of a scholarsh ip in his name .

He to ok an early retirement in the mid-60 's, but worked as a consulti ng engineer throu ghout hi s retir ment. He also de voted more time to his favouri te hobby , woodworking , which he claimed gave relief from stress . Until he died in 1970 , he conti nued to gi ve ne w li fe to old lumber, fa shi oning a myriad of decorative and functional ite ms .

Her husband , the late Norman Malcolm , grew up in G uelph where his paren ts li ve d o n the corne r of Du blin and Liverpool Streets . His fa lher' plumbing an d heating busi ness d id much work on campus and downtown . Aft er thei r ma rriage, M r. an d Mrs . It will o pen new opportunities and new challe nges for resea rch in the field of parti cle-solid interactions .

Th is fie ld of st udy is a relat ively new a nd rapid ly gro wing inter-disciplinary area.

I! spa ns both " pure" and " applied " research aspects of mapy fi e lds includi ng ph ys ics , materia ls science, meta ll urgy, chemis try and e ngineering.

As the name implies, the field of p article-solid in teractions in volves the study of the interacti on of energetic ato ms, ions, or mo lec ules wit h solid materials . The ce ntral piece of apparat us in the new laboratory , the acce lera tor will be used to accel erate ions to sufficient energy to probe the near-surface regions of solid targe t materials .

The accelerator is not new , having been used for two decades in an industrial

research la boratory for research in nuclear physics. Its purchase and subsequent installation at G uelph have been financed by approximately equal contributions from the Re search Advisory Board of the U niversi ty of G uelph, from Department of Physics capital equipment funds and National Research Council grants to physics fac ulty involved in the project. In addition , the University 's Dep artment of Physical Resource s prepared the laboratory for the installation.

All of the installation work and much of the design and production of ancillary equip ment has been done by personnel in the physics department. The project has been co-ordinated by De partment of Physics engineering technologist Richard Gingerich who has major responsibility fo r the in stallatio n and operation of the facility.

M embers of the department' s machine and electronics shops have made essential contributions. In particular, research technici an s Tom Riddolls and Bill Morton have spent the better part of a year

constructing sophisticated apparat us wh ich will be used in future experiments.

Both the nature of the scie nti fic work and the scale of operations make the fie ld of particle-solid interac tions ideal for university-based researc h and graduate work. Although much fundament al wo rk is yet to be done, many of the techniques of the field are currently being applied to important problems in industrial technology.

Solutions to such major concerns of society as energy sources, conservation of resources and pro tection of our environment will depend, in substantial meas ure, upon the characterization, modification and development of materials. It is because of this that the field of particle-solid interactions is growing rapidly , particularly in indu stry , and such growt h is generating a demand for experts in the field.

W hen an energetic beam of particles from a high voltage accelerator such as the Van de Graaff strikes a solid target, seve ral fundamental processes can occur. All of these have practical applications in research and in industrial technology. The particle beam can be scattered or deflected in such a manner that observation of the ene rgy and number of scattered particles can re veal many properties of the solid, ranging from the elemental composition of the material to the microscopic arrangement of crystal structure of its constituent atoms.

Another process of importance in the fi eld o f particle-solid int rac tions is re lated to the energy deposited in the solid by the inc ident bea m. T his process , termed "sputt ering, " is presently bei ng studied by Pro fessor Ro bin W . Ollerhead and Dr. J . A. Davies o f C halk River uclear Laboratories . .. Sputtering" is a process which is of impo rta nce in such d iverse problems as the modifi cation of the surface of the mo on and plane ts by particles from the sun and the possi ble erosion of the walls of controlled themlOnuclear re actors.

P ro fesso r Mac Do nald sees a numbe r of additional benefits fl owing from the insta ll at ion of the accelerator. Its application w ill lead to inter-d iscipli nary and mu lti-disciplinary projects in coll aboration w ith other researchers on campus, wherei n the powe rful analytical tec hni ques can be brought to bear in new and exciting areas .

T he facility is also ideally suited for use in se ni or unde rg raduate physics courses to illustrate, experimentally, many of the fundamental concep ts of physics .

Dr . MacDonald is looking forward with keen antic ipation to the uses whi ch will be made of the on-campus Van de Graaff acce lerator. "The major problems facing industrial technology are materials and energy proble ms," he says. "The field of pa rticle -solid in te ractions enables the researcher to co nfront tbose problems and obtain answers ."

In addition, he foresees substantial growth in this branch of physics , particularl y for its ana lytical capabilities .

Only a relat ively f w univ ersities in North America are now maki ng a contribution in this area. W ith the likely increase in the use of analyti cal techno logy. we at the University of Gue lph are prepared to train people and give them experience in this speciali zed area of physics . 0

Between the accelerator' s two beam lines, Department of Physics personnel curremly involved with the unit are : I to r, Professor Jack MacDonald, Chairman of the Department of Physics, Professor ian Campb ell, Ph .D. student Tom Jac kman , CPS ' 72, technician Richard Gingerich, research associate Chris Schulte and Prof essor Robill Oll erhead .

This is the partic ular interest of Profes sor Jack R . MacDonald , Chairm an of the De pa rtment of Ph ysics, and Tom Jackman, CPS '72, a Ph. D. studen t in the department, who have been studying the properties of thin films of oxide on the surface of silicon. This work has bee n undertaken in collaboration with scientists at Bell Telephone Laboratories, and is of fundamental importance in the st udy of the surface of solids.

In addition to the scattering of the inciden t particle beam, another fundam ental process involves the emission of X-rays which are characteristic of the composition of the target material. This particular process, particle-induced X-ray emission, is a very powerful tech ni que for identifying trace elements at minute levels of concentration .

Professor Ian Ca m pbe ll, Department of Physics, a pio nee r in the deve lopmen t and use of this tec hnique, and Chris Sch ulte , a re search associ at in the Departme nt of Physics, are planni ng several experiments in this area. Their current interests range from the study of co mposition of mineral samples to the correlation of selected impurity leve ls

T he newly elected Chairman of the Art Centre, Charles C. Ferguson, an nou nced this in early Febru ary at a special meeting in Macdonald Consolidated School, the building that is to be renovated into the Ce ntre's Art Ga llery.

At the meet ing , M r. Ferg uson also anno unced th at th e Min ister of Culture and Recreation , Rue b n C. Baetz, has informed the Centre that an additiona l $200 ,000 from the ' 'Grants for Cult ural S upport Capital program " will be prov ided toward the re-construction cos t of the building.

"We will now be able to re-acti vate our plans to make th Art Cen tre a phys ical rea lity," Mr. e rguso n said. "The new funds , toge the r wit h prev iously announced grants which were arrange d throu gh the University 's Depa rtment of Alu mni Affairs and Develo pme nt , will make it possi ble to start o ur planned re novations to the building. We will st ill need more funds, h weve r, to bring o ur full plans to fru ition. " The previo usly announced grants are : a $300 ,000 namin g grant from The Macdonald Stewart Fo undation of Montreal; a $300 ,000 grant from the Na tional M useu ms of Canada; a $ 15,000 initial grant from the M in is try of Culture and Recreation, and a $2,000 grant towa rd furni shi ngs from local lODE chapters .

HERBERT (HERB) S. RANSOM, OAC ' 43, retired from the position of Co-ordinator of Horticultural Courses at Algonquin College, Ottawa , on January I , 1978 . Followi ng graduation , he entered the Royal Canadian Navy as a seaman and was discharged as a Lieute na nt . He is a charter member of the Ontario Institute of Profess ional Agrologists, was Provin cial Director of that Instit ute fo r a term of lhree years, and is Past-Preside nt of that Institute' S Otta wa Valley Branch. He is a member of the Canadian Society of Hortic ultural Science , and a charter member of the Mandcrley Golf and Country Club, the Manotick Curling Club , and the Ott awa Valley Turfgrass Association.

Bill ' s career as editor, publisher and printer of trade journals started in 1947 . Currently Edi tor of the O.A . C . Alumni Ne ws, he has held the position since 1969 . He was Founding President and is Treasurer of the Streetsvil!e Historical Society; a fou nding member, and Past-President of the Street ville Lio ns Club , and a Founding Director of both the Canadian Ornamental Plant Foundation and the Ontario Farm Ho mes for Deaf Childre n.

Secretary of his class since graduation , Dr. W right is a life mem be r and Past- President of the Ontario Veteri nary Association; erved o n the OVA Advisory Committee; is a member of the CVMA and the AVMA , and was OVA mem ber in the AVMA House of Representat ives for five years . Douglas R. Babcook, O AC ' 50, is Vice-Presi dent, Produc tion, with the Stroh Brewery Co mpany, Detroit, Mic higan, U.S.A. Following graduation from G uelph, he spent five years with the Defe nse Researc h Board , Department of Nation al De fense, as a research scientist.

He joined Canadian Breweries Ltd ., in 1955 and was Head Brewer th ere prior to his move to Stroh Brewery as Master Brewer in 1969 . He was appointed General Manager, Brewing, Packaging and Feeds in 1976.

Me. Babcook is a diploma member of the Institute of Brewing, a graduate of the U .S. Brewers Academ y, and a member of the M aster Brewers Association of Americ a, the American Society of Brewing Che mists, the Engineering Society of Detroit and the Royal Canadian Navy Rese rve .

A native of Kingston , Onta rio, he is marri ed to the former Pat sy St. Peter from M ilk River, Alberta. They have three daughters, Lo u Anne, CBS ' 8 1, Catherine and Mary Jane.

Profe ssor Thompson received his B.A. cum la ude in economics and soc io logy in 1949 an d his M . A. degree in sociology in

195 1, both from the Universi ty of Colorad o .

In 1956 , he received his Ph .D . from

Cornell .

During his career, Dr. Thompson has se rved as professor of sociology at Cornell and as profe sso r and Chairman of the department at the Un ive rsit y of North Caroli na in Greensboro , at Californi a State College , in Bakersfield , as we ll as at Brock.

He was visi ti ng professor at the University of Colo rado during the sum mers o f 1966 and 1967 and served on the Ful brig ht-Hays adv isory scree ning committee fo r sociology from 1967 to 1968 and as its chairman fro m 1969 to 1973.

Dr. Thompson has been in vol ved w ith a large num be r of research projects dealing with yo uth, occu pat ional ret irement and commun ity issues . Many of his papers have dealt with the subject of aging and adjustment to it.

Robert W. (Bob) Kelly, OAC ' 51, has been appointed General Manager of T he Meat Packers Council of Can ada .

Following graduation, his initial busi ne ss experience was with Toronto Elevators Limited , now Maple Leaf Mills Ltd. During his almost 25 years of association management Mr. Kelly has had extensive experience with the Allied Boating Association, the Canadian Touri st Association, the Canadian National Sports men's Show and the Conservation Council of Ont ario. Since 1972 he has been General Manager of the Canadian Farm and Indu strial Equipme nt Institute.

He and his wife, Be verly , live in West Toronto with the ir two children.

D r. Willou ghb y' s te aching and researc h interests have cen tred on the prob lems associated with th e inteo ified rearing of livestock . In recent ye ars, these st ud ies ha ve included the effects of noxious gase s an d du st in barns on the resp iratory syste ms, the measurement of stress , the effect of under-nutrition on the uptake of lead and the interaction of environ mental factors an d infectious diseases . More recen tly he has helped to stablis h respiratory fu nct io n tests for hor es and cattle.

Since 1972 , he ha been Secretary of the American College o f Veteri nary Interna l Medici ne and was prese nt ed with an Award of Merit from tha t College for his services .

However, th at' s not the way it was when 23 alumni and frie nds crossed latitude zero du ring thei r to ur of Colombia and Ecuador last Nove mber.

According to Rose mary C lark, Mac ' 59, Assistant Director, Alumni Programs, who accompanied the group , there they we re , on a narrow mountain road 10,000 feet up in Ecuador's Andes Mount ains, dressed for th jung le and stepping out of a motor coach into a te mperatu re of 50° F. and pouring ra in l T hat was the trip ' s "Iowl ight" . The highlight occu rred earlier when the gro up was ente rt ai ned at "Rincon de J ura" in Bogota, the beau tiful home of David Hughes, OAC ' 5IA, and hi s w ife Betty .

Among the guests at the din ner party were Dr . Mi chael Held , OAC '5 6 , and his wife , and David Laughton, C an adi an Ambassador to Colo mbia.

Part of the trip, a six-day, 800-mile motor coach tour, from Bogota in Colombia, so uth to Qu ito , in Ecuador , exposed a land of contrasts as the group visited, or tayed overn ight, in large c ities and small tow ns .

Much of the tri p was spent travelling thro ugh the Andes Mount ains at an e levat ion of between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. One of the mo re spectac ul ar places was the area just
