Land Acknowledgement We offer our gratitude to the lands on which the University of Guelph campuses are situated and the Indigenous ancestors who have inhabited these lands for centuries. It is our honour to present the 2025 Lang Research Impact Report, showcasing the exceptional knowledge creation and translation activities that thrive within the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.

Dean

We saw unprecedented growth in the Lang scholarly community, with 12 faculty members joining Lang in 2025. We are excited by the energy and enthusiasm our new colleagues bring to Lang’s research community. We are especially excited to welcome Dr. Hai Nguyen, Lang’s first Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC), to the Department of Economics and Finance. The allocation of this prestigious CRC to Lang is a recognition of our collective contributions to research excellence at the University of Guelph. Dr. Nguyen’s research in Health, Environment, and Well-being aligns perfectly with Lang’s mission of Business as a Force for Good TM and the University of Guelph’s mission to Improve Life.

The varied and impactful research undertaken by Lang’s faculty, students and postdoctoral researchers spans an ever-growing range of disciplines, including accounting, actuarial science, consumer behaviour, corporate social responsibility, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality and tourism management, human resource management, leadership, marketing, project management, real estate, sport management, and supply chain management. We measure the success of our research through a pluralistic lens, prioritizing research excellence, impact, partnership, collaboration, mobilization, and developing the research leaders of tomorrow. This report demonstrates our commitment to these priorities.

Dr. Hai Nguyen Appointed Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Health, Environment, and Well-being The Lang School is proud to welcome Dr. Hai Nguyen as our first Tier 1 SSHRC Canada Research Chair (CRC), marking a significant milestone in Lang’s growth as a research-intensive business school. Dr. Nguyen joins the Department of Economics and Finance, bringing internationally recognized expertise in health economics, public policy evaluation, and population well being.

Dr. Nguyen’s CRC program examines how major health policies shape health behaviours, access to care, and public health outcomes across Canada. Dr. Nguyen aims to investigate how major health policies, including national pharmacare initiatives and substance use interventions, affect health behaviours, medication use, access to care and public health outcomes in Canada. His work will generate rigorous, timely evidence to guide more effective and equitable approaches to medication affordability, addiction treatment, harm reduction, and health system design.

A central focus of his research is the federal government’s first phase of national pharmacare, including coverage for diabetes medications, menopausal hormone therapy, and contraception.

Dr. Nguyen will also explore public preferences for potential future expansions to high cost drugs for conditions such as obesity and Alzheimer’s disease. Complementing this work, he will evaluate opioid related and other substance use policies for their effectiveness, unintended consequences, and broader population level impacts.

Through advanced health economics methods and policy evaluation tools, Dr. Nguyen’s CRC program will contribute to national and international conversations on health policy, equity, and well being. His appointment strengthens Lang’s commitment to research that improves lives and supports evidence based decision making in Canada’s evolving health landscape.

Canada’s economic vulnerabilities show why it must invest in the wealth of local communities Published in: The Conversation, March 2025 Written by: Audrey Jamal and Heather M Hachigian

Five years after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on March 11, 2020, Canada now faces a new challenge — unprecedented economic pressure from its closest trading partner, the United States.

Canadians are once again being forced to confront the country’s economic vulnerabilities. While the pandemic underscored the economic importance of place and social connections, economic aggression from the U.S. highlights the need for greater local autonomy.

Canada needs a new approach to economic development. Yet, as the government searches for solutions to bolster “Team Canada,” policymakers risk falling back on the same tired strategies: corporate bailouts, tax breaks for big business and topdown stimulus.

This played out during the pandemic. Policies favoured large corporations, leaving small businesses and workers struggling, despite their critical role in economic resilience. This time, Canada needs to do things differently.

In the past year, Lang faculty secured strong support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) across its core research and partnership programs.

Insight Grants (IG) and Insight Development Grants (IDG) advanced foundational and emerging research, while a Partnership Development Grant (PDG) and Partnership Engage Grants (PEG) strengthened collaborations with community, industry, and public-sector partners. Destination Horizon funding further supported international and interdisciplinary engagement. Together, these investments reflect the breadth of Lang’s research excellence across discovery, partnership-building, and impact.

SSHRC Insight Grants Ryan Snelgrove (DOM) Illness-based events as impactful spaces This mixed methods project examines how charitable athletic events create meaningful experiences for individuals living with illness and their support networks. By identifying the event conditions and psychosocial mechanisms that shape participant well being, the research will provide nonprofit partners with evidence based strategies to design more impactful, inclusive events.

Yiguo Sun (DEF) Social networks with missing data, endogeneity, and nonlinearity This project develops new econometric tools to better analyze complex socioeconomic networks where missing data and measurement errors distort results. By accounting for “dominant units” such as social media superstars or major trade hubs, the research will improve empirical insights into phenomena like protest spillovers and intergenerational mobility, strengthening policy analysis in interconnected systems.

Zhenzhen Fan (DEF) Does how you say it matter? Analyzing how corporate earnings calls drive investor beliefs beyond the numbers Using advanced natural language processing this project analyzes how tone, framing, and sentiment in earnings calls shape investor beliefs beyond financial metrics. The findings will deepen understanding of behavioural biases in markets and support more effective regulatory oversight of qualitative disclosures.

Ian Herzog (MCS) Economics of expanding housing supply with gentle density Focusing on Vancouver’s accessory dwelling unit (ADU) reforms, this study evaluates the welfare and distributional impacts of gentle density policies. By quantifying benefits and spillovers, the project will equip policymakers with a rigorous framework for comparing ADU strategies to alternative housing solutions.

Zhe (Betty) Ji (MCS) Evolving dynamics and compensation design in brand–influencer partnerships This research develops a systematic framework for sustainable brand influencer relationships. Through game theoretic modeling and empirical analysis, the project will guide brands in designing compensation structures that maintain authenticity and long term engagement.

WooMi Jo (HFTM) Understanding racial discrimination in tourism: Development and validation of a new scale This project develops the first validated scale to measure tourists’ experiences of racial discrimination. The results will support tourism organizations and policymakers in implementing stronger EDI practices and creating safer, more inclusive travel environments.

SSHRC Insight Development Grants

Jing Lu (DOM) Can machine learning reveal ESG’s impact on business success?

Using machine learning models and two decades of North American data, this project identifies which ESG factors most strongly predict financial performance. The findings will support investors and regulators in integrating sustainability metrics into decision making.

SSHRC Partnership Development Grant Elizabeth Kurucz (DOM) in partnership with K–12 school networks across Canada is focused on sustainability education Project title: Design thinking for 21st century learning: Schoolcommunity partnerships to develop leaders for sustainability This national partnership brings together researchers, schools, and community organizations to co-create innovative models aligned with sustainability challenges. By employing a designthinking methodology, the partnership co-creates “educational experiments” that empower students and teachers with the agency and practical skills needed to address complex socioecological challenges. The potential impact of this collaboration is systemic: it moves beyond isolated pilots to build a scalable “social learning network” that facilitates rapid knowledge exchange across provinces. Through the development of a practical toolkit for educators and a “Knowledge Stewarding” community of practice, the project aims to transform the Canadian educational landscape into a more resilient, community-integrated system that aligns student learning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and fosters the next generation of sustainability leaders.

Boundless Accelerator & Ruben Burga’s (DOM) partnership is focused on immigrant entrepreneurship pathways Project title: Exploring immigrant entrepreneurship pathways In partnership with Boundless Accelerator, this project examines the resource needs and success drivers of immigrant entrepreneurs.

The findings will inform targeted supports for underrepresented groups and strengthen regional innovation ecosystems.

Bank of Canada & Fred Liu (DEF) partnered on a macro financial risk forecasting project Project title: Enhancing the accuracy and interpretability of Canadian macro-financial risk forecasts via multiquantile deep learning with feature engineering to monitor systemic risks at the Bank of Canada This research establishes a high-impact partnership with the Bank of Canada’s Financial Stability Department to revolutionize how the nation monitors systemic financial threats. By integrating 386 macroeconomic indicators, 153 financial signals, and real-time news sentiment into state-of-the-art Multi-Quantile Deep Learning models, the project provides unprecedented predictive accuracy for macro-financial tail risks. The potential impact is both operational and systemic: the resulting risk measures are designed to be integrated directly into the BoC’s internal quarterly dashboards and the annual Financial Stability Report, providing regulators with the interpretable AI tools needed to proactively prevent crises. Beyond the technical outcomes, the partnership strengthens Canada’s regulatory capacity by training PhD candidates and economists in advanced machine learning, ultimately safeguarding the stability of the Canadian economy against extreme global shocks.

SSHRC Destination Horizon Grant Miana Plesca (DEF) Careers of Diverse Workers This project expands a successful multidisciplinary collaboration to analyze the career trajectories of diverse workers across Europe. By leveraging longitudinal tax data, the research will provide globally relevant insights into wage gaps, mobility barriers, and labour market inequities.

Tahereh Hasani (DOM) Cyber Synthetic Risk: Forecasting Advanced Cyberattack Impacts This project develops an AI driven simulation platform that models realistic cyberattack scenarios and their impacts on enterprise systems. The tool will help organizations strengthen preparedness, evaluate defense strategies, and make more informed cybersecurity investments.

New Marketing & Consumer Studies Research Lab Opens

Designed to support a wide range of research activities, the space offers a flexible and collaborative environment that can comfortably accommodate up to 18 participants. Equipped with a projector screen, overhead projector, and a Crestron connection system consistent with classrooms across campus (with no AV code required), the lab is ready for presentations, workshops, and data collection activities.

This space also includes a whiteboard and a sink with running water which provides additional functionality for studies involving experimental materials. The lab’s adaptable design features mobile tilt-top tables and comfortable rolling chairs that can be easily reconfigured to suit different research needs, from classroom and workshop layouts to boardroom-style focus groups. Dividers and partitions are also available to create individual research stations or private cubicles for studies involving human participants.

This versatile and welcoming space provides an ideal setting for innovative research, collaboration, and participant engagement.

Expanding Research Facilities

Research Funding Lang researchers secured more than $3.06 million in research funding from government, philanthropic, community, industry, and institutional partners. Support from private citizens, SSHRC, and federal government departments accounted for the majority of funding, while contributions from non-profit organizations, OMAFA, and business and industry partners highlight the practical relevance and realworld application of Lang research. Together, these investments reflect the School’s connections across sectors and its ability to generate research that informs policy, practice, and societal outcomes.

Dr. Laurie Barclay Appointed as Editor-in-Chief at the Journal of Organizational Behavior

Dr. Heather Kennedy Was recognized with the prestigious North American Society of Sport Management (NASSM) research fellowship. The NASSM Research Fellow Award is a lifetime award recognizing researchers for achievement in sport-related scholarship, disseminated through NASSM. Kennedy achieved that status for her many conference presentations as well as contributions to top-tier publications in her field, including the Journal of Sport Management, Event Management, Sport Marketing Quarterly, and the International Journal of Sport Communication.

Why bystanders defend bad behaviour at work — even when they know it’s wrong Published in: The Conversation, June 8, 2025 Written by: Zhanna Lyubykh, Laurie Barclay, Nick Turner, and Sandy Hershcovis “You always mess things up. Why are you even on this project? Just quit already.”

Demeaning, hostile or undermining behaviour like this is more common in the workplace and damaging than many people realize. One in three employees experience such behaviours, and almost half witness them.

Rather than intervening, supporting targets or reporting the misconduct, research shows bystanders may downplay it, withdraw support or even blame the target, which ultimately reinforces the mistreatment.

As our recent study shows, this is largely because when mistreatment seems inevitable or commonplace, bystanders are psychologically motivated to justify it rather than challenge it.

Why do bystanders rationalize mistreatment?

Humans are hardwired to see mistreatment as wrong. Most of us value fairness and want to punish wrongdoing. But if this is the case, why do bystanders so often fail to act when they witness mistreatment?

Cannabis Agritourism Futures Forum Lang researchers are advancing a new frontier in agritourism through innovative work on cannabis tourism development. Drs. Chris Choi and Susan Dupej convened an international forum bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and tourism stakeholders to explore opportunities in this emerging sector. Their research highlights how integrating tourism experiences into cannabis production can expand economic value while supporting safe and regulated consumption. This work is helping inform policy and industry conversations on the future of cannabis markets in Ontario and beyond.

Qualitative Accounting Research Symposium (QARS) Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Empirical and Theoretical Symposium (Canadian Marketing Strategy) The 10th annual Empirical and Theoretical Symposium for Canadian Marketing Strategy brought together researchers from across Canada to strengthen the national research ecosystem in marketing analytics. Hosted by Lang’s Marketing Analytics Centre, the event featured a high-profile panel on sustainable food supply chains alongside peer-reviewed presentations and a competitive poster session. The symposium supports collaboration among faculty and doctoral students while advancing research capacity in quantitative marketing strategy.

Small sample, big impact: How talking to just 5 people can improve startup success Published in: The Conversation, October 8, 2025 Written by: Xi Chen, Assistant Professor, Dept of Management As Canada navigates an ongoing tariff dispute with the United States, small businesses and startups are emerging as a source of economic growth that could help Canada assert greater independence from its largest trading partner.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that Canada cannot rely on the U.S. any longer and must instead achieve “economic autonomy.” Ottawa’s efforts to remove internal trade barriers and expand infrastructure projects are central to this objective, paving the foundation to revitalize the Canadian economy.

Another key part of this agenda is fostering entrepreneurship — the engine for new opportunities and economic growth.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the Canadian economy. As of December 2023, small businesses made up 98.1 per cent of all employer businesses in Canada, accounted for 63.7 per cent of the private labour force and 48 per cent of Canada’s GDP (gross domestic product) over the 2017-21 period.

They also represented 38.2 per cent of the total value of exported goods.

Although exporting has traditionally been dominated by larger, innovation-intensive SMEs — particularly those with significant intellectual property — recent data shows an increase in exports from smaller, service-oriented firms, many of them immigrant-led.

These businesses are playing an increasingly important role in diversifying Canada’s export base and reducing dependence on any single market — particularly the U.S.

IISBL: Expanding Global Partnerships

Kids care deeply about our planet, so adults need to start listening Published in: The Conversation, June 1, 2025 Written by: Erik Steiner, Jen Kostuchuk and Sean Lyons “I wish adults knew that I really care about the environment and want to help, but I sometimes feel like my ideas don’t matter because I’m just a kid.”

This is what a nine-year-old respondent told us when we asked how they feel about the environment.

In today’s current political climate, many adults seem resigned to climate catastrophe and even dabble in climate change denialism. However, our survey of 1,000 youth aged eight to 14 from Canada and the United States found that children care deeply about the planet and are ready to take action.

The findings from our report were produced as part of an ongoing study with the Humanity in Motion Society, a Canadian non-profit organization focused on engaging youth as key stakeholders in advancing environmental stewardship.

Almost 90 per cent of the kids we spoke to recognize climate change as a real and urgent problem, calling for intergenerational collaboration and bolder environmental mitigation and adaptation commitments.

It turns out that our nine-year-old respondent speaks for many children. Kids know what’s at stake, want a seat at the table and need adults to act with them.

To the brink and back: How near‑death experiences can change how people work Published in: The Conversation, May 5, 2025 Written by: Akierah Binns, PhD Candidate and Dr. Jamie Gruman What happens when someone comes close to death and then returns to everyday life, including work? For some, the experience can be transformative.

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are deeply personal experiences that some people report after a close brush with death. These experiences can include sensations such as floating above one’s body, reviewing moments from one’s life, encountering spiritual beings and feeling a profound sense of unity and love.

Although NDEs have been studied since the 1970s, we know relatively little about how they affect people after the event. Research suggests people who have near-death experiences may feel increased empathy, spiritual growth, a sense of purpose and even change how they approach their jobs.

Our recent study explored how near-death experiences impact people’s return to work.

We interviewed 14 working adults who had a near-death experience as a result of medical crises such as a heart attack or accidents such as a car crash. What we found challenges conventional ideas about success, motivation and workplace culture.

Doing meaningful work One of the most common changes expressed by the participants in our study was a desire to do work that felt meaningful and aligned with their newfound purpose in life.

After their near-death experiences, many wanted to spend time doing work that mattered to them and made a positive difference.

Developing Public-Facing Research Leaders

Will TGL have staying power in golf, or is it just a fad?

Published in: The Conversation, April 23, 2025 Written by: Joseph Dick and Shayne MacDonald Over the past several months, the upstart TGL golf league has tried to establish a foothold among golf fans. The league began its inaugural season in January 2025, fusing advanced technology with golf to offer an innovative product.

TGL was created in partnership with the PGA Tour, featuring its star players in matches to complement rather than compete with the PGA Tour.

In terms of viewership, TGL came out of the gates running, averaging 919,000 viewers on ESPN in its debut. As the season progressed, however, TGL averaged 502,400 viewers per telecast, with the final garnering the fifth highest viewership of the 12 TGL matches.

Some have suggested this decline in viewership indicates TGL may be unsustainable. Will TGL have the staying power to keep fans interested, or will it simply prove to be a passing fad?

Over the past two decades, nutrition labelling has evolved into a cornerstone of public health strategies worldwide. Traditional back-of-package labels, which provide comprehensive nutritional details, are often overlooked due to their complexity and placement, making them less effective in guiding consumer choices.

Front-of-package labels address this issue by simplifying key nutritional information and positioning it in a more prominent, visible space. This streamlined approach has proven successful in leading consumers toward healthier choices, as research indicates that simplified, visible labels can influence purchasing decisions.
