Annual Report 2023-2025
Summary of Key Activities over the Reporting Period This report summarizes the activities and accomplishments of the Institute for Sustainable Commerce at Guelph (ISCG) over the 2023–2025 period. It is organized around the five priorities in the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics’ Strategic Plan, with each section outlining the Institute’s contributions to research, teaching, and engagement in business sustainability. Together, these sections provide an overview of how ISCG has supported Lang’s ongoing work in responsible management education and the advancement of sustainabilityfocused scholarship and practice.
Lang Strategic Priority 1: Enhancing Lang’s Reputation for Excellence and Leadership in Sustainability Guided by the plan’s goals to “enhance Lang’s domestic and international reputation for business as a force for good” and to “develop innovative physical spaces that reflect Lang’s reputation for sustainability and collaboration,” the Institute for Sustainable Commerce at Guelph (ISCG) undertook a range of activities between 2023 and 2025. These efforts highlight the Institute’s role in advancing research, partnerships, and knowledge mobilization that strengthen Lang’s position in sustainable business. Most notable, the Institute is responsible for managing Lang’s UN PRME Champion status. This involves the in-depth submission of the annual UN Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) report. Over the reporting period, the Institute maintained and expanded its engagement with organizations such as the UN Global Compact Network Canada, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Canada, the Network for Business Sustainability, the Global Responsible Leadership Initiative, and the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative. Leadership roles held by the Institute’s Director within several of these networks further amplified Lang’s profile and influence, positioning Lang within key global conversations on responsible management and sustainable business.

Lang Strategic Priority 2: Creating Leaders for an Inclusive Future The Institute for Sustainable Commerce at Guelph (ISCG) recognizes equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) as integral to the broader sustainability agenda. Social sustainability—one of the core dimensions of sustainable business—requires inclusive practices, equitable opportunities, and diverse perspectives in both academic and organizational contexts. As part of this commitment, a portion of Lang’s Sustainability Fund is allocated to support the EDI Coordinator portfolio and related initiatives, reinforcing the connection between sustainability and inclusive leadership. Between 2023 and 2025, ISCG-supported funding contributed to a range of EDI-focused initiatives that enhance awareness, capacity building, and community engagement across Lang. The decisions about these funds and how they were spent were made by Lang’s EDI Coordinator. These funds supported participation in the AACSB EDI Conference, programming such as the Bigger Picture Series hosted at the Wood Centre, and studentfocused initiatives including the EDI Pitch Competition. Additional contributions supported community-building and awareness efforts such as the Black Brilliance Conference and Orange Shirt Day activities. Collectively, these investments reflect ISCG’s role in advancing inclusive excellence as a core component of sustainability education and leadership development.

Research Impact Lang faculty research during the 2023–2025 period demonstrates strong alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting both the breadth and depth of sustainability-focused scholarship across the School. A key role of the ISCG is promoting work related to sustainability and the success of Lang faculty in this area. Analysis of publication outputs shows that faculty contributions span a wide range of SDGs, with particularly strong representation in areas such as: • • • •
SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth (47 publications) SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals (36 publications) SDG 13 – Climate Action (27 publications) SDG 5- Gender Equality (24 publications)
This distribution reflects Lang’s commitment to addressing complex global challenges through interdisciplinary research that integrates economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability. A more detailed breakdown of publications from 2023-25 by SDG is provided below.
Annual Report 2023-2025
In addition to volume, research quality and impact remain a key strength. Faculty published in leading peerreviewed journals, including Financial Times-listed and A* journals (ABDC), reflecting high standards of academic excellence. These outputs contribute to both scholarly discourse and practical application, reinforcing Lang’s reputation for impactful, globally relevant research. A comprehensive list of sustainability-focused publications is provided in the Appendix, highlighting the scope of faculty contributions and their alignment with ISCG’s mission to advance knowledge and practice in sustainable commerce. While the ISCG does not have a role in supporting all of these publications, as these are produced by Lang faculty, sustainability research at Lang is actively promoted by ISCG through our UN PRME and PRME Champion reporting. While some of these publications were also supported by small grants, the metrics here represent how the centre has reported the research excellence of our faculty as it relates to sustainability.
Additional Seed Funding The following grants were provided just prior to this reporting period, which supported publications in the 20232025 publication cycle. They were not reported on in the previous ISCG report.

Sustainability is positioned as a foundational element of business education, integrated across undergraduate and graduate curricula in alignment with Lang’s mission to develop responsible, forward-looking leaders. This approach ensures that all students—regardless of discipline—have opportunities to engage with sustainability concepts, preparing them to address complex global challenges. During the 2023–2025 reporting period, ISCG supported curriculum development and experiential learning opportunities that enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. This included the introduction of BUS*6070 (Topics and Analysis in Sustainability), the redevelopment of the core Sustainable Value Creation course for both in-person and online delivery, and contributions to the Minor in Sustainability and Sustainability Certificate programs. The Institute also supported undergraduate research assistants working on applied sustainability projects, such as the development of Digital Green Guides for campus events, and enabled student participation in PRME chapter activities and global forums. Enrolment growth in MGMT*3020 (Principles of Responsible Organizations), including increasing participation from students outside of Lang, further reflects the expanding reach and relevance of sustainability education across the university.

ISCG Key Priorities 2025–27 Building on a strong foundation of growing partnerships, expanded activities, and a rising institutional reputation, the Institute for Sustainable Commerce (ISCG) enters its next reporting period with a clear vision for the future. The 2025–27 strategic roadmap focuses on deepening academic integration, securing financial resilience, and scaling research impact. Aligning internal operations with global frameworks and expanding collaborative networks will help solidify the Institute's role as a driving force for sustainable commerce both within the university and across the broader business community. A foundational focus for the coming years is securing the financial and organizational resilience of the ISCG. To support this, the Institute will actively pursue new revenue-generation streams, primarily by leveraging increased grant funding and external partnerships to better resource and staff the Institute’s operations. To achieve this, strategic efforts will focus on diversifying revenue streams and optimizing internal resourcing.
Key Strategic Initiatives •
Expand Governance and Advisory Board: Establish a formal ISCG Advisory Board with broad representation from across the Lang School and the wider University. This board will champion diversity and inclusion, increase the Institute's visibility, and guide its overarching strategic priorities.
•
SDG Curriculum Mapping: Launch a comprehensive initiative to map all Lang curricula and courses against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This mapping will provide a datadriven understanding of how sustainability is currently integrated into teaching and identify opportunities for future curriculum development.
•
Deepen UN PRME Engagement: Strengthen and institutionalize the School's relationship with the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). This will be achieved through active
Annual Report 2023-2025
