EXPANDING OUR REACH TELEHEALTH HAS ALLOWED HEDCO CLINIC TO REACH CLIENTS ACROSS OREGON Over the past year, the HEDCO Clinic has seamlessly incorporated telehealth services, continuing to provide virtual visits even as in-person services resume. Improved technology has expanded the reach of the clinic to remote locations and gives clients the option to access services via the method most comfortable to them. Clients with emotional or physical barriers to in-person visits can receive help in the comfort of their own home, and parents can access coaching and therapy without worrying about childcare. Students have also quickly learned new ways to work with clients therapeutically while maintaining the interpersonal connection of in-person sessions.

HEDCO CLINIC IMPROVES TECHNOLOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE TO MEET CLIENT HEALTH NEEDS IN A POST-COVID ENVIRONMENT Reaching a long-term goal, the clinic has now completely implemented an electronic health record system that has enhanced the security of client records and made the Clinic HIPAA-compliant.

The clinic has also expanded its technological capabilities through a virtual interface video system upgrade. This upgrade allows for the remote recording, viewing, and sharing of all sessions. Faculty supervisors can now view students’ sessions from beyond the walls of the clinic.

3 MARJORIE MITCHELL AUDIOLOGY LAB NEW LABORATORY OPENS IN OCTOBER Donor funds and a partnership with Oregon Health & Science University have allowed the clinic to open an audiology lab to expand available services. The lab will be managed by OHSU and staffed by an audiologist specializing in pediatric care, and will provide families in Eugene, Springfield, and southern Oregon greater access to hearing assessments and recommendations for care. In addition, undergraduates within the Communication Disorders and Sciences program will receive direct instruction and coursework from clinical faculty and the opportunity for hands-on training within the service.

The lab is named after Marjorie Mitchell who attended the UO in the 1920s. Mitchell had scarlet and rheumatic fevers when she was just five years old, leaving her nearly deaf.

Mitchell left her estate to the COE to help improve the quality of life for individuals with hearing loss and resultant language and communications challenges. This lab will bring to fruition her vision for improving access for hearing impaired families and enhance future collaborations between the COE and OHSU.

THE BEST PEOPLE FOR THE JOB ADDITIONS AND CHANGES TO CLINIC STAFF LEAD TO GREATER EFFICIENCY AND CAPACITY Staff departures during the academic year have allowed the clinic to redefine roles to meet the needs of new and expanded services and an increase in clients. A new clinic manager, Jody Nichols, was hired this year, and the search for an assistant manager is currently underway. Changes in current roles at the College of Education have reduced staff redundancies and made the clinic more cost-effective while providing additional technological and administrative support.

Due to the departure of academic supervisors, the outreach service arm of the Center for Teaching and Learning which operated through the HEDCO Clinic closed in 2020. A search is in progress with the goal of identifying a faculty member to take over this service in the coming year. The clinic hopes that services will resume by summer 2022.

5 GOALS FOR NEXT YEAR NEW AND CONTINUING INITIATIVES FOR 2021-22 In 2020, the COVID-19 epidemic required an emergency shift from in-person to virtual in nearly all operating systems for the clinic as well as the teaching, student practicums, and community outreach and services. For 2021-22, the HEDCO Clinic plans to move forward on several new and continuing initiatives.

• Improve community connections via social media and outreach to local organizations, physicians, and families to increase awareness of the services offered at the HEDCO Clinic • Revamp the HEDCO Clinic website to better communicate the clinic’s services • Expand on-site client parking • Increase staff support • Open and integrate the Marjorie Mitchell Audiology Laboratory • Develop a newly restructured and expanded academic tutoring service that capitalizes on the expertise of the COE faculty

SPEECH-LANGUAGE-HEARING CENTER The SLHC has offered premier speech and language assessments and interventions while simultaneously training future speech-language pathologists. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts and dedication of the clinical faculty and students and the generosity of donors, the SLHC made a seamless transition to telehealth with no disruption in client care while welcoming clients of all backgrounds, abilities, gender identities, sexualities, socioeconomic statuses, and family structures.

We’ve been able to reach clients all over the state through telepractice, providing assessment and treatment that has allowed people to continue to work towards their goals despite social distancing. Our graduate students have had the opportunity to continue their clinical training thanks to donor support for the SLHC.”

COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY CENTER The addition of the CPC to the HEDCO Clinic in September 2020 significantly expanded the availability of low-cost, evidence-based diagnostic and psychotherapy services to UO students and adults in the community. The CPC also created a new specialized cognitive-behavioral training opportunity for Counseling Psychology doctoral students, helping to deepen students’ professional skills as they helped their clients to achieve their therapeutic goals.

COMPREHENSIVE DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT CENTER The CDAC externship provides doctoral students the opportunity to build skills in a strength-based, holistic approach to assessment and diagnosis for learning disabilities and ADHD. In addition to benefiting from a direct supervision experience from a licensed psychologist, the externship offers a unique interdisciplinary peer experience, with students providing ongoing, structured peer support.

CHILD AND FAMILY CENTER The CFC is a student-led clinic that uses the Family Check-Up model, an evidence-based treatment, to reduce child maltreatment and promote positive parenting practices for Oregon families. As of fall 2020, the CFC fully integrated into the HEDCO Clinic to provide support for children up to age 18. During school closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CFC was able to assist parents as they managed their children’s virtual instruction.

CENTER FOR HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS The CHR is a low-cost counseling center staffed by COE Couples and Family Therapy student interns. The inclusive clinic serves couples, families, and individuals, some of whom are UO students. The addition of telehealth services over the past year has allowed the CHR to serve clients across the county and state.

Students Trained In the Fall of 2022, the COE will begin offering an online master’s degree in Board-Certified Behavioral Analysis (BCBA). BCBAs provide research-backed interventions and action plans to clients with cognitive and developmental challenges. The program is being developed in response to great community need for BCBAs in educational and clinical settings.

The COE expects about 15 students in the new program, which will allow HEDCO Clinic to take on more clients.

APPLIED BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS ABA interventions help children and families within the first 100 days of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. HEDCO Clinic continues to prioritize early interventions that benefit children and families while providing academic opportunities for Special Education students. ABA provides a child, their family, and their educators with research-based, family-centered assessment and treatment plans, follow-up consultation, and long-term monitoring to promote positive outcomes.

STEPHANIE SHIRE ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, EARLY INTERVENTION AND SPECIAL EDUCATION “Without the HEDCO Clinic, we would not have been able to safely serve local families with young children who have some of the greatest needs for critical early intervention services. This project has also supported crucial training opportunities for graduate students in Special Education and Clinical Sciences who engage as assessors and interventionists for this project.”

STACY ARBUCKLE SPECIAL EDUCATION DOCTORAL CANDIDATE “The transition from early intervention special educator to full time PhD student was challenging.

I realized how important my work with children and families is to me. As a project interventionist at ABA, I build connections with and support children and families regularly. This work has helped me maintain a connection to why I became a special educator in the first place and am now pursuing a PhD in the field.”

• Special education associate professor Wendy Machalicek was selected to serve a three-year term as Co-Editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions.

• Counseling psychology assistant professor Bertranna Muruthi was funded by the Lane Educational Service District to work on promoting African American/ Black student success through designing a survey, conducting focus groups, and analyzing multiple methods data.

• Jennifer Meyer, clinical associate professor and director of clinical education for the Communication Disorders and Sciences Program, received the COE Excellence in Research/Outreach, Mid-Career Award.

• Alycia Canavan, clinical assistant professor in the Communication Disorders and Sciences Program, received the COE Excellence in Supervision, NTTF Award.

• Beth Stormshak, Philip H. Knight Chair and head of the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services, spoke to Around the O about the Child and Family Center’s Family Check-up intervention. The program, funded by an NIH grant, is now being implemented online to help families cope with the extraordinary stress caused by the COVID-19 epidemic.

• Researchers in the UO’s Prevention Science Institute have received a two-year, $1.2 million grant from the NIH to fund expanded COVID-19 testing at syringe exchange sites. Beth Stormshak and Associate Professor Anne Marie Mauricio are researchers on the project.

• Wendy Machalicek, associate professor in the Special Education Program, served on a panel discussing her research on developing effective interventions for addressing the behavioral and educational needs of young children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities.

• A new two-year, $4.9 million grant from the NIH will expand COVID-19 testing to underserved Latinx communities in six Oregon counties using testing capacity created by the UO’s COVID-19 Monitoring and Assessment Program. Assistant Professor Stephanie DeAnda and Associate Professor Anne Marie Mauricio are among the UO researchers lending their expertise in bicultural and bilingual community outreach and implementation science.
