Our teaching and learning philosophy All our teaching is guided by research – our staff are experts in their field and ensure that courses, modules and learning activities are all informed by relevant research and practice.

But we also focus on teaching excellence and a social learning experience, meaning you will feel part of a real community from day one, for example, though working on applied or collaborative projects with fellow students.

Even before you arrive, you’ll be supported by your very own Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), and taught by staff who’ll inspire you as they get to know you, and who will go the extra mile to support you in your ambitions.

A blended learning experience We understand the value of learning in person and being part of a community, so our approach supports and promotes social learning. This ensures we put as much emphasis on in-person teaching as we do on digital learning, allowing students to get the best of both worlds.

PC Michael Jones BSc (Hons) Professional Policing Practice (Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship) student “The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship is giving me the opportunity to obtain a degree, alongside working in the role of Police Constable. The tutors at the University of Chester all have vast knowledge and experience - each of them brings a unique approach and style to being a Police Constable. Having previously served my country in the Army, I am pleased I can now serve my local community in the Police Service, and hopefully I can play my part in making the community a better place to live for everyone.

My future aspirations are to become a Firearms Officer, before working my way through the ranks to Chief Superintendent.”

Our Location Here at University Centre Warrington, we are extremely proud to be a part of such a welcoming town that continues to go from strength to strength. We’re excited to be moving our teaching provision and student services right into the heart of Warrington town centre from September 2022, meaning you’ll benefit from brand new facilities, with easy access to excellent transport links and Warrington’s thriving cultural scene right on the doorstep.

Based in Warrington town centre, our new Time Square and Remond House locations are only a five-minute walk apart, and have been co-designed with current students. If you join us in September, you’ll be part of this innovative new chapter at Warrington – we’re focused on giving you the support you need to become an ‘agent for change’, so you can make a difference. Whether that’s through connecting you to local agencies as part of your course, or enabling you to start up your own society or sports team, you will be able to put your own stamp on your student experience.

Time Square Our new town centre location will provide a prominent hub for the University in Warrington, offering small lecture spaces, study zones, as well as space to connect for students, businesses, schools, colleges and the local community.

Remond House This is our new, dedicated site for the majority of our Warrington teaching provision. The building will include a student hub for the delivery of key student services, as well as social spaces for students between teaching sessions. It will include brand new, high-quality, subject-specific facilities to ensure you get the best possible practical experience while studying with us.

Our courses for serving members of the police such as our Policing Apprenticeship and our Policing Graduate Diploma course will be taught out of the Tucker building, located on our Padgate Road site.

Professional placements At Warrington, our courses have been developed to provide a real-world driven approach to learning. Our courses are delivered by academic staff who are retired experienced professionals possessing a wealth of knowledge and subject expertise.

There is a strong emphasis on employability skills throughout our courses which is why networking opportunities are integrated into your degree. For instance, the Institute of Policing is a College of Policing (CoP) approved provider of pre-join provision and has strong links with Cheshire Constabulary. This means that teaching is supplemented by significant contributions from operational subject specialists and partner agency practitioners to enhance your learning experience.

Kirsty Squibb BA (Hons) Social Work How did your journey on placement begin?

Upon my arrival at Kotoka International Airport, I was met by a Projects Abroad colleague who drove me to my host family. My host family were incredibly supportive and welcoming and included Mr Wulff (who was 84 years old) and his family. Like many local Ghanaian families, they were extremely religious and devout Christians. I gained so much from living and working in this community, including an understanding of how religion can impact an individual’s world and guide them in their practices.

Can you tell us a little about your work-based placement as part of your studies on the BA (Hons) Social Work programme?

My work placement was at the Shelter for Abused Children in OSU, Accra. I worked with children aged seven to 18 who are mostly runaways or lost children, although there were also children who had been trafficked, were seeking asylum or had experienced child sexual exploitation.

Social workers work to trace families or guardians, building relationships and sometimes trying to find alternative relatives or foster carers.

Aside from your placement experience, what other

opportunities were you faced with?

I travelled around Ghana, from coast to coast. In the North of Ghana in Tamale,

I visited the largest waterfalls in the region, monkey sanctuaries and the oldest mosque in Ghana. I also learned new things, took part in local cooking lessons, local language (Twi) lessons and drumming and dancing sessions – truly immersing myself in the culture and spirit of Ghana.

What would you say were your main achievements on placement?

Overall, my experience working abroad as a student social worker has truly allowed me to develop skills professionally and personally. I have increased my confidence and professional accountability which are key aspects of becoming a social worker.

I was introduced to different ways of working, including ‘Life Story Work’, ‘Signs of Safety’ and therapeutic approaches to trauma which enabled me to help other professionals to strengthen their skills and create new opportunities for them and the children. I would like to thank the University for assisting me on making my trip a success.

PC Lois Elvey-Lawless FdSc Policing, Law and Investigation Graduate, Institute of Policing Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey to becoming a Police Constable?

My name is Lois Elvey, and in 2013 I enrolled on to the Policing, Law and Investigation Foundation Degree at the University of Chester. Eight years on, I am now a Police Constable with Cheshire Police. I have worked for the last six years on the response unit at Ellesmere Port and have just passed the application process to become a trainee detective.

The first year of my degree was based around the learning of legislation and how to implement that into an operational environment. In 2014, I joined Cheshire Police and continued my second year, which was based mainly around operational policing.

How did the course give you the skills and experience required to kickstart your career?

The course was run by both retired and serving officers who had real life experience, which brought the modules to life and helped build confidence and professional knowledge. This helped me significantly when working in the operational environment and having to put what I’d learnt into action.

The fantastic use of the hydra suite is brilliant for adding pressure and time limitations to decision making, a skill that is utilised daily in the life of a police officer.

The course also teaches you about all the powers you hold as a constable and how to manage investigations, which has proved to be invaluable to me.

What would you say is the main advantage of studying Policing at the University of Chester?

The professional placements within this course gave me the knowledge and confidence to become a Police Officer who is comfortable with decision making under pressure, and how to investigate low level criminal offences. This sound basis has given me the independence to now manage more complex investigations that I can confidently take forward during my detective training.

James Harker BSc (Hons) Community Policing and Criminal Investigation Graduate, Institute of Policing Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is James Harker, I was a student on the BSc Community Policing and Criminal Investigation course and graduated in July 2020.

How did the course give you the skills and experience required to kickstart your career?

The lecturers on the course are primarily ex-police officers and are always available to help and provide you with the necessary support you need, as well as delivering interesting and engaging lectures.

Can you tell us a bit more about your experience studying on this course?

During my time at the University, I studied many different modules including Missing Person Investigations, Investigative Interviewing, Managing Critical Incidents and Digital Crime.

During the second year of the course, students complete a Work Based Learning placement. I managed to secure a work placement with North West Regional Trading Standards. This placement allowed me to gain valuable experience inside a professional investigative environment. I attended meetings regarding current live investigations, as well as accompanying investigators to take victim and witness statements.

What would you say is the main advantage of studying Policing at the University of Chester?

Following my placement, I was offered part time employment by Trading Standards while finishing off my university studies, and have continued to work for the organisation following my graduation from the course. The work placement significantly helped me with my studies as I could apply knowledge I had learned during the work placement to my university work. It also improved my employability skills as I could display work undertaken in an investigative environment.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time at the University of Chester and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in a career in investigation.

Do you have any tips for students living away from home?

Stick it out if you find it hard at first! Some people may struggle to adapt to university life, but very often this changes. You just need to remember that everyone is in the same boat!

What do you recommend to help students ‘settle in’?

Say ‘yes’ to every opportunity that is thrown your way because it will help you make friends and you may find something you didn’t think you’d enjoy.

Can you tell us what it’s like studying at degree level?

It isn’t as difficult as you may be expecting.

Your tutors will help you along the way and it is a very smooth transition.

Budgeting works differently for everyone.

Some people choose to use apps and others choose to make notes of how much they’re spending. The best thing is to try a couple of different ways in your first few months to see what works best.

What do you wish you had known before starting university?

I wish that I’d known how much support there is at the University, from technical support to wellbeing support. There is so much support in place to help you with any problems that you may have.

Why did you want to become a Peer Mentor?

The Peer Mentors at Chester have helped me in so many different ways, so I knew that when it came to my second year, I would want to help others in the same way. Being able to speak to other students and support them is really rewarding.

Cultural Hub – From comedy nights to art exhibitions, theatre plays, guest talks and more, Pyramid Art Centre and Parr Hall are two of Warrington’s key hotspots for your evening and weekend entertainment. Located within Warrington’s Cultural Quarter, these venues have welcomed rockstars such as The Rolling Stones and tickled audiences across the area with stand-up material from the likes of Jimmy Carr, Jason Manford and John Bishop.

The Golden Gates – standing guard over Warrington Town Hall, this gorgeous Georgian Grade II listed monument protects a luscious green space. Originally commissioned as a gift for Queen Victoria, this grand location marks the perfect spot for a midday break away from your studies. Festivals and Events – Warrington has played host to some of the UK’s greatest festivals including Creamfields, Oktoberfest and Neighbourhood Weekender. Artists the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, Hannah Wants, Sam Fender, The Orielles, Martin Garrix, Sundara Karma and many more have graced this town’s stages.

So, whether you’re into electric, dance, folk, indie rock, alt, pop, or something totally new and undefined, this town is sure to cater for you!

Town Hall – hiding just behind the pearly gates is the home of Warrington Borough Council. Warrington Town Hall is another Georgian monument that now houses council meetings as well as a gallery of historic silver plates and other civic regalia. This monument is located close to the town centre where you’ll find an array of places to visit, including the town’s largest shopping centre, market, and the museum and art gallery. Warrington is easily accessible by public transport too – the bus station and Warrington Central, one of two main railway stations in Warrington, are located right in the heart of the town centre.

Museums and Galleries – Warrington Museum and Library is a fantastic little gem where you can delve into local and international history and art collections. Each year the venue hosts a Contemporary Arts Festival which supports local and emerging talent in the area.

Warrington’s Indoor Market – fancy a bite to eat on a budget? Then head over to Warrington Market where you will find endless stalls to tantalise your tastebuds. From French patisseries to Thai cuisine, fresh fruit and veg and all your caffeine-fix needs, this indoor space has over 50 independent traders and stalls. Grab a sandwich and a smoothie and help a small business in your new community!

Stockton Heath – Stockton Heath is home to a number of modern bars and restaurants, as well as more traditional pubs. Just a seven-minute drive away, Stockton Heath makes for a great night out if you fancy a break from the town centre. Popular bars include Slug and Lettuce and expédition.

Clue HQ – split up and look for clues with the gang at Warrington’s live escape room venue. In teams of two to six, you must work collectively to solve clues and puzzles which will lead to your eventual freedom.

TeamSport Go Karting – for the thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies out there, buckle your belts because we have just the ticket! Go Karting at Warrington’s TeamSport venue is a great way to quench those competitive thirsts and race a team of pals to the finish line. Who will reign victorious? We’ll leave that up to you…

Warrington Wolves – the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington is home to the Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club and has hosted major rugby league games including the European Nations Final. If you love to scrum or just fancy a day out to support the local team, why not book a ticket, don a shirt and paint your face in solidarity of the sport. The club offers concession and young adult rates on all their tickets, so get stuck in!

Food, drink and nightlife From major restaurants and pub chains, to independent coffee shops and tea rooms, Warrington offers something to suit every taste and budget.

If it’s a big night on the town you’re after, or a quiet drink with friends, Warrington offers a variety of bars and pubs for you to chat and dance the night away.

Top three places to eat as voted for by Warrington students: Nandos – The number one student choice.

Stonemill – The Stonemill specialises in affordable indulgence: fantastic food, an award-winning drinks range and mouth-watering desserts.

East Orient – Great value for money. All you can eat Chinese buffet complete with an ice cream machine.

Top two nightlife hotspots as voted for by Warrington students: Level – One of the cheapest nightclubs in Warrington, offering a mix of both alternative and pop music. Be warned, it can get very busy!

The Botanist, Time Square – Serving botanical inspired cocktails, craft beers and food inspired by the deli, rotisserie and BBQ.

Other popular choices include: The Plough – The Plough is a Flaming Grill pub restaurant, famous for its food challenges!

Grill on the Square – This might stretch the student budget, but Grill on the Square is a wonderful setting for a romantic date or special event.

Las Ramblas Wine and Tapas – Traditional tapas dishes such as paella, tortilla, patatas bravas and croquettas are all served alongside a fabulous choice of local drinks. With offers running throughout the year, make sure you add this Catalonian delight to your must-eat list.

Just a short journey away Located in the North West of England, Warrington is a vibrant and modern town with a rich historical past. The town boasts excellent transport links and is considered to be the gateway to the North West region.

Manchester Manchester is the closest major city to Warrington. So whether you jump on a train, grab a taxi or drive, you’ll be there in no time at all. A popular student hotspot is the Trafford Centre, a huge indoor shopping complex complete with a large food court and cinema.

The close proximity to Warrington also makes Manchester’s nightlife popular with students.

Liverpool Located just 20 miles away, Liverpool is a city of culture and heritage. With a wealth of things on offer, you may find it difficult to pick what to do first. Liverpool is the birthplace of The Beatles, so why not visit the famous Cavern Club? Go to Aintree racecourse? Or explore Concert Square, the heart of Liverpool’s nightlife?

Chester The city of Chester has a vibrant mix of cafés, shops and architectural and archaeological features. Chester is home to art festivals, events, exhibitions and street entertainment. The city is also famous for The Chester Races, The Chester Rows, the Rowing Regatta, the new Storyhouse Cultural Hub and the acclaimed Chester Zoo. Chester is easily accessible from University Centre Warrington, being only 30 minutes away by train from central Warrington where we are based.

Warrington Central – One of Warrington’s two main railway stations. Central station is used by services that stop between Liverpool and Manchester, and express services between Liverpool and the North East/ Liverpool and East Anglia.

Warrington Bank Quay – The other main railway station in Warrington has trains travelling on the West Coast Mainline, with regular services to London, Birmingham and Scotland, as well as regional trains to Liverpool, Manchester and North Wales.

Birchwood – Birchwood Station lies in the middle of the Manchester-Liverpool Line, taking locals to Manchester Oxford Road in 25-minutes and Liverpool Lime Street in around 50-minutes; Warrington Central is just four minutes away.

Car

Bus Warrington’s Own Buses is an award-winning municipal bus operator which operates the majority of bus services in all areas of town.

Airports Manchester Airport – Only 15 miles away, with three terminals, Manchester Airport offers flights to a wide range of both domestic and international destinations.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport – Named after one of the famous Beatles, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is located 20 miles away offering flights to over 70 different destinations.

Warrington and the surrounding areas are easily accessible by car with the M6, M52 and M56 all nearby.

Get Active At our new site in the centre of Warrington, you’ll be close to a range of local sports facilities and gym providers, who we will work with to ensure competitive prices for those times you want to take a break and get active.

We’ll also build on our links with local sports clubs including netball, football, futsal and rugby. As we are only a short journey away from Chester, you can also get involved in a wide range of University sports teams based there.

You’re now in your second year as VP Warrington. How are you finding it?

I’m enjoying it quite a lot. It makes me happy to be involved with the University and Chester Students’ Union. My priorities primarily involve engagement this year, including campaigns and many more activities, which we sadly couldn’t do last year due to the pandemic. I love it!

What has been your proudest moment while working at the University?

There have been many proud moments whilst I have worked at the University. One of these was being able to run a successful Movember campaign, with virtual activities taking place during the pandemic. Another proud moment was when we ran in-person activities with high engagement from students during Welcome Week 2021. That always puts a smile on my face!

What is your favourite part of the job?

First of all, the Chester Students’ Union is very lovely to work at. I am surrounded by amazing, hardworking colleagues who also want the best for students! Secondly, I really love the engagement side of it all. Running activities, campaigns and so on! It also makes me happy to know that I am approachable!

How would you summarise your Chester story?

Well, this is my fifth, yes FIFTH year of being involved with the University of Chester.

Whether this be as a student or a member of staff, I can’t seem to go away! My Chester story, as a student, would have to be that it [joining the University] was one of the best decisions I made, I made loads of new friends, friends for life! It was the best experience of my life and I wish I could do it ALL over again.

Languages for All If you’re looking to learn a new skill, there’s the opportunity to join one of our part-time language courses. All of our courses have a reduced rate of £100 and, better still, this fee is reimbursed once you’ve completed 80% of the course – so it’ll be completely free. You can choose from a range of languages including Arabic, French, German... Russian and Welsh.* For further information, you can email lsp@chester.ac.uk. *All courses will run subject to demand and will be offered virtually if necessary.

Lend a hand Volunteering at university is a great way to meet new people, build your transferrable skills and give back to your local community. The Volunteering and Mentoring team have a website dedicated to student volunteering, including a page where you can browse and apply to volunteering opportunities offered to students in the local area. As well as these opportunities, the team run a series of bespoke student-led volunteering opportunities that any student can get involved with!

What experience do I need?

No experience is necessary - just enthusiasm for the project and a willingness to learn. You will receive full training at the start of your project and will receive guidance and support from the Volunteering and Mentoring Team throughout your time as a Project Leader.

What will I gain?

You will develop lots of key employability skills such as: • Communication • Teamwork • Planning • Confidence • Organisation • Project management You’ll also get to meet like-minded students and have the opportunity to make a real difference in the community.

What are student-led projects?

Welly Wednesday

Student-led projects are volunteering projects led by students, for students! Project Leaders are recruited, trained and supported by the University’s Volunteering and Mentoring team to recruit student volunteers and deliver their project. Being involved in a student-led project, whether as a volunteer or as a Project Leader, is a great opportunity to give back to the local community whilst developing key employability skills.

Welly Wednesday is a project which encourages students to get involved in organised conservation activities in and around Chester. They run a number of conservation events throughout the year that students can sign up to as and when they are available. Events have previously included building hedgehog houses, helping maintain local parks and making bird houses!

What projects can I get involved with?

Chester Student Dog Walkers:

On this project, volunteers combine their love of food with a desire to give back and help members of their community – they film cooking tutorials to share tips on healthy eating on a budget. These videos are then shared with charity partners, such as Chester Aid to the Homeless (CATCH), who then share the videos with their service users. Whether you would like to design the recipes, cook the dishes or film the process – there is something for everyone!

This highly successful project sees pairs of volunteers walking dogs for people in the local community who can no longer walk them themselves on a regular basis due to illness or injury. The project aims to ensure that dogs remain active with regular walks and is the ideal project for anyone who loves animals!

Letters Against Loneliness:

Chester Healthy Eating Workshops (CHEW)

This student-led project was set up to help combat loneliness and social isolation in members of the local community, by matching them with a student pen pal volunteer.

Volunteers communicate regularly by letter, finding out about their pen pal’s hobbies and interests and providing much needed social interaction and connection.

Bonding Through Books Created by two English Literature students, this project was set up in response to the pandemic and the impact this had on young people’s education. The project follows the basic premise of a reading club, enabling children in the local area to be as expressive and creative as possible.

The Volunteering and Mentoring team can meet with you to discuss your ideas, as well as provide you with resources, training, support and opportunities to establish, advertise and promote your project.

Green Chester

We have entered into a pivotal time for climate change, and sustainability is at the forefront of the University’s agenda. Our students work closely as part of the Green Team to help us reach our goals. There are lots of opportunities for students to introduce new initiatives, get really creative and put plans into action.

All staff and students are encouraged to collaborate on award-winning sustainability events, like our Fix it Fair to share our repair and re-use expertise, or join in with our latest green initiatives such as Digital Climate Cafés and tree planting. Students can also join the People and Planet Society to make their mark during Go Green Week, or get their hands dirty on the on-campus allotment. We aim to inspire a greener generation and provide students with the sustainability skills employers want.

Apply for student funding There are lots of financial support packages available to help you along on your university journey. It’s best to apply as soon as possible to ensure everything is in place for the start of term.

For full details of tuition fees and maintenance loans, see our website: chester.ac.uk/finance Bursaries Depending on your circumstances, you might be eligible for one or more of the following University of Chester bursaries: • Chester Bursary Available to new Level 4 full-time undergraduate Home students (paying a tuition fee of over £6,000), and to continuing home students at Level 4 whose programme has included a Foundation Year (at Level 3), who have a means tested household income of £25,000 or less.

Students studying on a course that attracts an NHS Bursary are not eligible for this bursary.

Bursary: £1,500 Cash payments of £500 per level of study.

• Chester Bursary for part-time students Available to new part-time undergraduate home students (paying a tuition fee of at least £7,000 full time equivalent), enrolled for a minimum of 40 credits at the start of Level 4, and with a means-tested household income of £25,000 or less.

Bursary: up to £1,500 Cash payments made on a pro-rata basis depending on the number of credits studied each academic year.

• Foundation Year Bursary Available to new Home students (whose programme includes a Foundation Year (at Level 3), who have a means tested household income of £25,000 or less.

Students will receive a £500 cash award in the first, Foundation Year of study. When Foundation Year students progress to Level 4, those from low income households may become eligible for the Chester Bursary (see above).

• Care Leavers Bursary Available to new full-time undergraduate students under the age of 25, paying a tuition fee of over £6,000, who have evidence of their care leaver status.

Bursary: up to £6,000 (up to £8,000 for those starting at Level 3).

Mixture of cash benefits and fee waiver, plus access to discounted University accommodation.

• Young Adult Carers Bursary Working in partnership with registered carer organisations, this bursary is available for any eligible young carers who are new fulltime undergraduate Home students under the age of 25.

A young adult carer is someone aged 18 to 25 who regularly looks after and has responsibility for a sick, elderly or disabled family member.

Bursary: up to £4,500 (up to £6,000 for those on Foundation Years starting at Level 3). It is available in addition to some other University bursaries.

Money advice and support Our Student Services Support Team are on hand to offer our students tips on managing money, plus practical advice on what support is available and how to get it.
