MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear Friends, This year, I started my second 5-year tenure as the dean of the College. It has been my honor to serve such passionate, dedicated, and smart colleagues for the last five years. As part of a Carnegie Tier 1 research university, I am very proud of our College’s accomplishments. Our talented and dedicated faculty and staff ensure our students’ success by continuously striving for their best outcomes. Therefore, it is no surprise that our College is a strong and active contributor to our university’s success. Of course, I would be remiss if I do not acknowledge the support and contributions of our alumni, who help students and the College with their financial support and other efforts, such as mentorship.

While the world has gone through various pandemic-related challenges in the past year, and our College is not immune to them, I am very excited to share our achievements despite the difficult times. By focusing on student success, we provide opportunities to our students in new and emerging areas, such as data science and computational linguistics. We continue to analyze our curriculum to ensure quality and state-of-the-art instruction. Our faculty continue to explore research and grant opportunities to involve and train students. We enable our students and faculty to engage in world-class innovations and promote cross-pollinating between our three departments of Information Science, Learning Technologies, Linguistics, and beyond. We continue to engage industry partners and other collaborators in the rapidly growing high-tech sector in the Dallas- Fort Worth Metroplex to provide internship and employment opportunities for our students. The result of these efforts is the largest enrollment that our College has seen in the past decade.

As we celebrate our accomplishments from the previous two years, we reflect on what matters the most: the success of our students. As we move forward, we aim even higher by putting our students first. Our vision continues to evaluate every activity, interaction, and decision to ensure each student’s success, not just when they are studying with us but well beyond in their professional lives.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

The world of Information is exponentially expanding every moment. By creating a community to discuss our intersecting areas of interest, we can create exciting advancements in science and service to our communities. The UNT College of Information (COI) is comprised of the Departments of Information Science, Linguistics, and Learning Technologies. Through intersecting and unique areas of interest in information and technology, we create exciting advancements to our disciplines and communities.

The UNT College of Information is located in Discovery Park. The 300-acre research park is the largest university research park in the North Texas region. The National Science Foundation continues to invest in collaborative, multidisciplinary research for years and universities like UNT that have an integrated approach into the way they do business. UNT is devoted to establishing labs that promote collaborations among faculty, other institutions, and corporations.

CHAIR OF INFORMATION SCIENCE

Dr. Jiangping Chen was appointed the Chair of the Department of Information

Science at the University of North Texas in 2018. Dr. Chen currently serves as a professor in the department, teaching graduate courses on data modeling and information science research. She also supervises the department’s Graduate Academic Certificate in Digital Content Management. Dr. Chen graduated from Syracuse University in 2003 with Ph.D. in Information Transfer. She earned her B.S. from Wuhan University and M.S. from the Library of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Research interests include Digital Libraries, Information Retrieval and Access, Data Analysis & Data Science, and Information Systems Evaluation. Dr. Chen’s research has been continuously funded, and she has secured more than a million dollars in grants in recent years. She published a monograph on multilingual access and services for digital collections by Libraries Unlimited in 2016 and more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Electronic Library, one of the top international Information Science journals.

CHAIR OF LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

Dr. Yunjo An was selected to serve as the new Chair of the Learning Technologies Department on September 1, 2020. Dr. An previously served as an Associate Professor in the department. She received her Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University Bloomington, and she has taught a variety of courses in Learning Technologies/Instructional Technology over the last 12 years. Dr. An’s research interests include digital game-based learning, gamification of learning, complex problem solving and learning in technology-enhanced learning environments, learner-centered technology integration, and teacher professional development.

CHAIR OF LINGUISTICS

Dr. Sadaf Munshi has worked at the University of North Texas for over 12 years and served as interim chair before being appointed chair in September 2019. As a Professor in Linguistics, Dr. Munshi teaches courses on a wide range of topics in historical and comparative linguistics, language contact, language documentation, phonology, grammatical analysis, and linguistic theory. Her research focuses on Indo-Aryan languages (e.g. Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, Mankiyali, and Romani or “Gypsy” language) and Burushaski. She strives to facilitate an academic environment that fosters international engagement and cross-cultural collaborations and helps reinforce student abilities and talents. As department chair, she used her wisdom to advocate for students by finding collaborators for internships and future job opportunities. Dr. Munshi demonstrated the leadership experience needed for faculty and staff to thrive and students to succeed. Dr. Munshi finished her term as chair at the end of 2021, and a new chair, Dr. William Salmon, will take over the role.

NEW FACULTY Dr. Heejun Kim joined the Information Science department as an Associate Professor and will focus on research, teaching, and service on data science and health informatics. He earned his Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Prior to joining UNT, Dr. Kim worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Drexel University, where he taught core data science courses and worked on diverse research projects, including pharmacovigilance.

Dr. Sarah Ryan joined the Information Science department as an Associate Professor and to lead the law librarianship program. Dr. Ryan hails from Wesleyan University where she spearheaded research on the First Step Act, which focuses on crack cocaine resentencing. She was admitted to practice in Connecticut and will continue to draw on her legal experience to fill the role. Prior to practicing law, Dr. Ryan was the Empirical Legal Research Librarian and Head of Empirical Legal Research Services at Yale Law School. Ryan is a national expert on empirical legal research services, and has published articles in Law Library Journal, Trends in Law Library Management and Technology, Legal Reference Services Quarterly, and Perspectives: Teaching Legal Research and Writing. Dr. Ryan has presented on empirical services, survey design, and institutional data collection at the American Association of Law Libraries, Federal Court Librarians, and New England Law Library Consortium conferences. At UNT, Dr. Ryan will expand upon two other research projects: an analysis of court filings and media coverage of cases brought by transgender plaintiffs, and a 50-state and federal statutory survey of the term veteran. The latter project draws upon Dr. Ryan’s work as a veterans attorney, a specialty she learned at Quinnipiac Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctorate (J.D.), and as a staff attorney at Connecticut Veteran Legal Center, the VA’s first medical-legal partner.

Dr. Ting Xiao joined the Information Science Department in the Data Science concentration. She applies statistical and machine (deep) learning tools to extract meaningful information from large data sets including recent projects processing video, audio, and wearable sensors. Before joining the Department, Dr. Xiao was a research assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UNT, where she taught graduate-level courses in data science, AI, and software development and engaged students in a variety of research projects. She also serves as the liaison for the AI4All initiative at UNT and co-organizes the UNT AI Summer Research Program. In her prior Ph.D. and postdoctoral research role at Northwestern University, Dr. Xiao worked across three multi-institution international collaborations in Experimental Particle Physics for high-impact results.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS

Dr. Barbara Freedman graduated in 2019 with a PhD in Learning Technologies with a dissertation on The Impact of Technology-based Music Classes on Music Department Enrollment in Secondary Public High Schools in The Northeastern United States. Since 2011, along with teaching classes at UNT as adjunct, Barbara has taught high school technology-based music classes and had her program featured in a documentary, called The Creative Element, in which three music teachers explain how music technology helps their students engage with the creative process and make the music that matters to them.

Dr. Jen Seale graduated from the Linguistics Department in 2007 with her masters in Linguistics and recently completed her Ph.D. in computational linguistics at the CUNY Graduate Center. After UNT, Seale went on to work in ontology-centered natural language processing at an AI startup. She also worked as a computational linguist in the educational technology world and as an NLP-focused researcher in a telecommunications-focused AI startup in NYC. Dr. Tara Zimmerman graduated in August of 2020 with a Ph.D. in Information Science.

Tara already held an M.S. in Library and Information studies and had worked as a publicschool librarian for eight years. She had been involved in the human side of information seeking behavior but became interested in exploring an information focus, leading to her dissertation work, Research on Information Behavior of Social Media Users. Tara was awarded the Computing Institute Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship, funded by the National Science Foundation, for a two-year span. This position has allowed Tara to broaden her research endeavors, get experience in the field, and increase her opportunities to publish, lining up perfectly with her passion for research.

Mathew Zuniga graduated with an M.S. in Library Science in 2021 w/Youth Services Certification and Librarian Certification. Zuniga was awarded Teacher of the Year at his campus as he was graduating from UNT for completely redoing the library and taking it over as a teacher-librarian. Recently, he spoke as a keynote panelist for one of New Tech Network’s main presentations about how his campus is working to help make college accessible for all students. And last summer he was selected as an IASL (International Association of School Librarianship) video winner and had his video about his school library and its programs premiered at the conference.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS

KatyBelle Edwards is a new graduate of fall 2021 with an M.S. in Learning Technologies, focusing on Project Management and Workforce Performance. During her time in the program, she became very involved in the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), serving as a Philanthropic Consultant to the ISPI Board, gave a presentation on Philanthropic Best Practices in an Age of Disruption at the 2021 Performance Improvement conference, and was accepted to present at the 2022 Performance Improvement conference in Nashville, TN on organizational change management. She was also a recipient of the Dr. Roger Ditzenberger Scholarship, and she works in university advancement at UNT. Irhamni is an international student from Indonesia in the Ph.D. Information Science program.

Becoming a Ph.D. student and exploring the nature of Information Science has been one of his dreams since he was in his bachelor’s program. He left his job as a policymaker in The National Library of Indonesia even though he was in a very comfortable position as a bureaucrat and made critical policy for developing the national library of Indonesia’s strategic programs. In 2020 he was awarded the Fulbright scholarship and a UNT College of Information Scholarship - Law Librarian and Legal Informatics Scholarship. The scholarship matches with his current interest in the government publication and open government data, particularly involving government agencies through their libraries. kYmberly Keeton is a PhD Student in Information Science, majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. Her research deals with African American Community Archives in Texas, and she is interested in learning more about digital preservation with regard to her research and how it will play a role in her doctoral research. Recently, she was published in What’s Emerging in the Field, Essays from Museum Computer Network, article entitled: Perspective: In the Time of COVID-19 | Still Black See and in the Library Journal article entitled: 23 and We: Contemporary Genealogy Services. She is very proud of the debut of her PhD work through a virtual platform: B G L A M – Black Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums.

Marty Heaton is a PhD Information Science student with a concentration in Linguistics. His passion is documenting endangered languages. On a trip to Oman, he decided to learn a local language but found that the language was unwritten. Have you ever wondered how someone can learn an unwritten language as a second language without living in the area where it is spoken? Marty’s important research has found a way and has focused on documenting endangered languages. His research is developing an application to document unwritten languages through voice to text, which has combined technical skills he has learned in the information science class with his linguistics background.

INITIATIVES The C.O.D.E. (Career Opportunities, Directions, and Exploration) series began as a collaboration between the college, the departments, and the career center. At the center of C.O.D.E events are COI students, looking to establish career directions as they plan their degree and perspective students interested in COI degrees or how our programs intersect with their fields of study.

January 2020 Day of Data Science The amount of careers available in Data Science currently outpace the number of people needed to fill them. According to Indeed.com the average salary for Data Scientists is $122,885. In an effort to highlight the current Data Science students, Department of Information Science Department faculty member Dr. Jinhua Ding brought together industry experts for the Day of Data Science event.

September 2021 Noah Wittman Co-Founder, Cloudabo and Senior Enterprise Account Executive, Redis In this presentation, Noah led participants to understand how Business to Business software sales (B2B) can be a lucrative career that often looks more like consulting than the door-to-door salesman.

October 2021 Lola Obamehinti Cybersecurity Professional and Technology Communications Leader Whenever people think of cybersecurity, they usually think of a hacker who relies on coding to break into a computer network. However, there are other job roles in the cybersecurity field. In this panel, Lola shared insights into the different domains in cybersecurity and how various academic majors are all applicable and valuable for working in security.

INITIATIVES ICSTLL 53 The International Conference on Sino-Tibetan Languages and Linguistics (ICSTLL) is the premier meeting for linguistic researchers on Sino-Tibetan language family, a family with over 400 languages and second only to IndoEuropean in numbers of speakers worldwide. ICSTLL has been held in 13 different countries. Twenty-four of the meetings have been held in the United States with the first meeting taking place at Yale in 1968.

CoRSAL Since 2017, UNT Faculty from Linguistics, Information Science, Computer Science and Anthropology began partnering with the UNT Digital Library to create a repository for South Asian languages at UNT. The hosting of this repository known as CoRSAL (Computational Resource on South Asian Languages) houses data in formats that can be easily accessed and used by non-linguists and linguists for a range of purposes including language science, computational linguistics, language reclamation and revitalization, language teaching and investigations into diverse cultures and histories.

The CoRSAL group supports archiving of audio, video, and text on the under-resourced languages of South Asia. CoRSAL engages in research at the intersection of language documentation, description, and information science.

We encourage depositors from all backgrounds to create collections with us. As you explore the archive, you will see material created in field methods courses, as part of federally-funded research projects, or by dedicated community collectors.

Formats range from digitized wax cylinder recordings, to experimental recordings in sound-proof booths, to interviews recorded in the marketplace on a cell phone.

This variety allows for lasting records of languages to be created from multiple perspectives collected under different circumstances.

INITIATIVES ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING IN IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENTS (ELLIE) English Language Learning in Immersive Environments (ELLIE) is a one-day symposium for researchers, developers, and educators to discuss the elements of effective virtual environments for language teaching, especially conversational English. Presentations included topics such as immersive learning, Virtual Reality (VR) accessibility for users with disabilities, and Instructional Design (ID) fundamentals.

The University of North Texas Simulation User Research Game Experience Lab, or SURGE Lab for short, hosted the ELLIE Conference April 23, 2021. The SURGE lab is run by Dr. Aleshia Hayes, Assistant Professor of Learning Technologies.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANSHIP (IASL) The International Association for School Librarianship, Texas Woman’s University, and the University of North Texas hosted the 49th Annual Conference and the 24th International Forum on Research on School Librarianship July 12-16, 2021. This conference is designed for those with an interest in education and libraries to explore how school librarians effect change, empower learners and positively contribute to education. Conference tracks included Innovation, Language & Culture, Growing Literacies, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Literature & Storytelling.

DIGITAL LANGUAGE ARCHIVES (LANGARC) Digital Language Archives are digital libraries that curate, preserve, and provide online access to language data, especially those of endangered and under-resourced languages to help communities exercise control in how their stories are told and shared.

This September 2021 workshop included presentations which were moderated by COI’s Dr. Oksana Zavalina and Dr. Shobhana Chelliah. Researchers, practitioners, and educators discussed digital language preservation to foster collaborations among information professionals, linguists, educators, and representatives of language communities (including indigenous communities, refugees, speakers of under-resourced languages).

GIRLS SURGE INTO STEM XR CAMP In-person summer camp returned to the College of Information with a new program that introduces young women to STEM Careers. Learning Technologies Assistant Professor Dr. Aleshia Hayes received several awards to create the Girls SURGE into STEM XR summer camp. Following Covid-19 guidelines the camp was held at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth from July 12-16, 2021.

“Our outreach is to underrepresented young women is 6-12 grade in Fort Worth. We introduce emerging technology tools used for STEM education,” says Dr. Hayes. The camp itinerary also included daily meetings with diverse STEM professionals in Biology, Chemistry, Anthropology, Computer Science, and Engineering. Students also learned transferable skills and how to apply them: design thinking, user experience (UX) testing, and prototyping. In addition to students learning to critically evaluate commercial augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

“My purpose for the camp was to connect young ladies with opportunities to learn about the different kinds of STEM careers and to see women in those fields. I wanted to address the address disparities to educational attainment, employment, and wealth in minority communities, particularly in Fort Worth communities through STEM Education, changing girl’s sense of selfefficacy with emerging technology, and to introduce them to design thinking as well as user experience testing principles,” says Hayes.

INITIATIVES SIG-KM SYMPOSIUM September 29, 2021, UNT hosted the SIG-KM (Special Interest Group on Knowledge Management) symposium to encourage and empower participants who are new to knowledge management. This symposium showcased the works of scholars and practitioners researching the knowledge management field.

HAJ ROSS SQUIBBER SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER Dr. John Robert “Haj” Ross is a poet and linguist whose contributions to linguistics are significant over his 50 year career. At MIT from 1966–1985, he worked with great thinkers and friends like George Lakoff, James D. McCawley, and Paul Postal. Dr. Ross played a central role in the development of syntactic theory, making a huge impact with his 1967 MIT dissertation, which established the importance of syntactic islands. He coined many new terms describing syntactic phenomena that are now common linguistic parlance including: copula switch, Do-Gobbling, freeze(s), squib, squishes, and syntactic islands among many others.

Dr. Ross was named a UNT Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus in December 2021. Dr. Ross’s students commonly reflect on how he has changed their lives through his classes – he is loved by students, faculty, and friends alike. Over his career, he has amassed over 5,000 “squibs,” short descriptions of linguistic data that resist standard theoretical analysis. The Squibber Scholarship is for students who excel and revel in the art and science of the Squib. The Haj Ross Squibber Scholarship Fundraiser took place July 30, 2021.

INITIATIVES THE YVONNE J. CHANDLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP The UNT College of Information is committed to keeping Dr. Yvonne J. Chandler’s legacy alive. Dr. Chandler believed that law librarianship should be accessible to all. She also believed in supporting and mentoring students throughout their academic journeys and beyond. We share Dr. Chandler’s goals, and we recognize our responsibility to honor her legacy.

The endowed scholarship will carry on the work of Dr. Chandler and become an annual award. The scholarship will continue the education of future generations of librarians, an obvious link to the ultimate outcome of Dr. Chandler’s teaching prowess.

DR. YVONNE J. CHANDLER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM This mentorship program honors the work and legacy of Dr. Yvonne J. Chandler, for whom it is named. The Dr. Yvonne J. Chandler Mentorship Program is open to all College of Information community members. We encourage alumni and professors from any department within COI to sign up to be mentors, and we encourage students with any major in the College of Information to sign up to be mentees. However, anyone connected to the College of Information community is invited to sign up as either mentee or mentor as they see fit.
