What lights you up?

Seeing people happy. Seeing people I have helped succeed.

Tell us the Best advice you have ever been given? And who shared this wisdom with you?

The best advice I was given was by my Mum, she said “ke sera sera”, yes just like the song! What is to be will be. We can’t control everything, and we need to realise that the universe has its own plan.

What are you focusing your intentions on at the moment?

I intend to lead by example and to be kind. I intend to help others and to share and spread happiness.

Share with us something you have forgiven yourself for?

I have forgiven myself for not being there for friends. I have forgiven myself for saying unkind things in the past.

It’s important to move forward, to forgive ourselves for things said or done that hurt you equally, forgiveness opens up lots of doors, the doors to being happy and living a fulfilled life.

What are you grateful for in your life most recently My family and our health.

Tell us your three simple truths…

1. Stay true to yourself - Being authentic goes a long way.

2. Practice gratitude - Give back and be thankful. The more you give, the more you will get.

3. Let go of anything that doesn’t serve you anymore - holding grudges will only make you resentful. Let go of the negativity and embrace the happiness that you will attract once you are happy within yourself.

What is your definition of greatness?

Greatness. Wow. This is a tough one.

Greatness, in my opinion comes from being there for others, it comes out of being selfless. It comes from focusing on our wider purpose and from serving others.

Is there anything missing in your

life right now?

No. I am happy and content Besides where you live, where on earth do you consider your spiritual home?

Tell us the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given and by who?

Love what you do and do what you love. This was something I picked up a few years ago whilst out and about, the quote has stayed with me as I believe strongly that we all have a calling, we should follow our passion and the path that the universe is guiding us on. Life is too short to do something you don’t enjoy.

What book did you read that changed your life & how?

Your Story by Musart Ellahi. This book is full of life stories and journeys of women from different walks of life, how they have overcome adversity and found a way to lead fulfilling lives. This book gives so much perspective and allows you to feel grateful and to honour other women.

Share with us what are you excited about right now?

Mum of two boys, Toby 4.5 and Bryn 22 months, Bhavna is the founder of Successful Superwomen, a network of 3000+ female entrepreneurs.

She runs an online business school via a membership - Successful Superwomen Hub. She created this group to offer business success tips to help women live authentic and successful lives, whilst empowering them to achieve their goals, becoming successful businesswomen and unleashing the superwomen within them. “How I found myself by using my intuition” Lisa Martin had to learn to build trust and follow her inner guidance to break free from worry and anxiety.

I have not always been in the habit of listening to my inner whispers, or even in the habit of really trusting my first gut instincts.

I’m learning to lean on my intuition, I’m learning to trust it, and myself.

Now I can tell straight away if someone, or something feels off, I can even tell you to watch out, and don’t trust someone. But a long time ago this was not the case. First let me take you back to the past me Years ago I was living inside my own head, always in survival mode. I was somewhere between anxiety, stress, feeling lost & overwhelmed all rolled into one.

I was not wanted, not good enough for the people I loved and even those I had loved and lost.

I was in a place of retreat, of not trusting my own mind or heart, I had shut down my own voice. After years of conditioning it was so much easier to be the giver, ‘Lisa the people pleaser’, rather than saying no thank you, this doesn’t work for me There were times when I couldn’t see straight for tears. I was constantly being critical of myself. I had times when I would tell myself off for being so jumpy at the smallest thing or sound. The silliest thing would knock me off course, even when I could feel my heartbeat fluttering like a caged bird, trying to break free, I would ignore it, pushing it

further down.

I allowed others to make my decisions, allowed them to tell me I should do this and not that. I gave others too much permission over my life. I allowed their judgments to control my own thoughts & feelings about myself until the life I was living was not my own.

- But my intuition saved me!

It’s the reason I’m still here, standing, smiling & ever evolving. It’s the reason I’ve kept going, curveball after curveball. Because my soul knew better, it knew I had a light to shine, I just had to learn to trust myself, and the journey. It is so easy to forget how when your juggling all the plates

Being in this mode for years led to me hiding my true self. As much as, at the time, I thought I was living my truth, when all it was doing was taking me further away from my own truth... I was Alice falling deeper, and deeper into a never-ending hole

Looking back I can see, for so many years my thoughts and feelings were dismissed as trivial, which lead me to being bullied, controlled and abused. I eventually began to believe that

“When I realised I couldn’t continue along the path I was on, I knew I had to make changes”.

At first I built walls around me whilst I found myself. Some people didn’t understand this, but still, I knew it needed to be done.

I knew I had to take that first step away from the darkness that had enveloped me after my biggest curveballs to date. So after being given literally a nudge, I signed up to a course I had wanted to do for so long. For the first time in a long time, I trusted that I would find what I needed inside of me to complete the course.

I also knew I needed to take the steps

into building up my own self love, self care and boundaries, and once again my intuition came into play, leading me to people, and places that would help me in my journey back home to me.

Now has this been an easy road… heck no, but it has been worth it.

Why? Because I am rediscovering who I am. I am reconnecting with my soul and goals I had buried for so long.

I am now more able to say no thank you to what does not bring me joy.

I now make self care, for my mind, body & soul a priority. I am still a giver? Yes - but I fill my own cup first.

So what is your intuition?

It’s that feeling that keeps poking you, nudging you. It keeps you awake.

That gut instinct is otherwise known as your INTUITION

That ‘just knowing’ feeling you get.

For me it was a silent scream telling me to “get out now!”.

It’s how I’ve survived, gone through, and grown through, all I have. I now know I am highly sensitive and it’s not a weakness, I’d just been ignoring it for so long.

The truth often keeps us scared and stops us from growing.

Not using your intuition is literally being disconnected from who you truly are.

Ignoring it leaves you lost out in the cold, not knowing the way because your inner compass is trying to guide you, yet you’re ignoring the nudge.

It leaves you not really listening to your own inner whispers. We get so used to listening to the voices of others, that we dismiss our own voice It becomes easier to be a watered down version of us in the society we live in.

Of course, I’m still learning to worry less about judgment from others. My intuition has been such a help with this journey.

What I’ve come to realise is that when we peel back the layers, all that counts is how we act, react and interact with others & ourselves.

I don’t mean the likes, the fakery, the new, the perfection, the bubble of an online world. I’m talking about trading fear for curiosity, hope, grace, healing & soul connection.

Our intuition guides us to our deepest truth, if we allow it.

Your intuition is the key to shining your light & trusting your journey, wherever it may lead you. It’s the key for being truly who you are, because lovely you and I are enough, exactly as we are!

It’s time to finally trust in just being your true self. These days I pay attention to my intuition

INTUITION In 10 simple ways...

Because we live in a fear-based culture that obsesses with trying to control life. We often neglect or even forget our own internal navigation system. Also known as our intuition.

Instead we find we are constantly anticipating everything that might go wrong and doing everything within our power to guard against all possible disaster. There are better ways.

What if you had your own personal GPS? What if you guide and direct yourself through life trusting just your vibes.

Intellectually most of us know what this means: Follow that voice in your heart, listen to your gut, the answer is within you. Trust your inner chime.

It sounds simple, but for a large

amount of people it was developed over time by allowing themselves to evolve and move forward, instead of wallowing in self-doubt. You'll find you remember so many instances in your life when you quashed your gut's opinion and did what you thought you were "supposed" to do, instead of what you knew in your gut was right.

You can reduce this outcome by taking time to check in with how you are feeling, if you have a random thought, make a note of it or better still act on it.

Here are several other ways I recommend to uncover, trust and reconnect with your trustworthy inner voice...

1. Start noticing all that you can with your five conventional senses.

You were given all of your senses for a reason. Don't be tempted to move through life so quickly that you take them for granted. By slowing down and noticing your senses you can raise your sensitivity to your sixth sense. Which senses do you use more often than most? Try and use as many of them as possible.

2. Pay attention to your dreams.

When the cognitive mind is busy, it can override the intuitive right brain and the subconscious mind. It's as if it drowns out the signal of your intuition. But when you're sleeping, your cognitive mind rest and opens space for the subconscious mind to signal you in dreams. Keep a note pad or book by your bed if you wake and remember your dreams jot them down. Then you can look back on it and also check for any symbolism.

Engaging in creative activities, such as drawing, free-flow journalling, quiets the cognitive mind and allows your intuition to speak up. Free flow journalling was one of our favourite ways to connect with our intuition.

Spending time simply doing something that makes you feel good and allows you to relax is a super powerful way to tap into your subconscious.

4. Test your hunches.

Got a feeling about something that is about to happen? Getting a sense that it will rain tomorrow even though the weather forecast says it won't? Do you just know your best friend's new guy is bad news? If you have feelings about what might happen in the future, write down your hunches, then

check them later. See how often you were right. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

5. Consult your body Your intuition speaks to you through your body, and the more you expand on this awareness, the more sensitive you become. If you get an uncomfortable physical feeling when you're trying to make a decision, pay attention.

Do you feel light or heavy? Got a sick feeling in your gut? A tension headache? It could just be the result of stress responses activated by false fear, but it could also be your intuition ringing loud and clear.

6. Meditate.

Messages from your intuition tend to be quiet, so spending time

in silence will help you hear and interpret these messages. If you've never meditated before you don't need to over complicate it. Just spent ten to fifteen minutes a day letting your thoughts come and go in a comfortable position.

7. Escape from your daily routine.

Get away. Slow down. Go on a retreat, take a sabbatical, or just spend a day in new surroundings with nothing planned. When you're overly busy, it's hard to be sensitive to the quiet voices of intuition. Try clearing your schedule and see if your intuition chimes in.

See what kind of information you can get from observing people and feeling their energy before they talk or you learn anything about them. The more you tap into this energy, the more you'll realize you already know things you couldn't possibly be a coincidence.

8. Spend time in nature.

Being in the natural world, away from technology and the cognitive

This is probably one of the most important. Don't call yourself crazy when you get an intuitive hunch. Often, the cognitive mind argues with intuition rather than trusting it. By doing this, you may rationalize yourself out of intuitive knowing that will lead you towards joy or even save your life.

The bottom line is we are all a work in progress. It takes patience, practice and a willingness for selfdiscovery, but once you awaken and connect with your intuition, anything is possible.

“The three ways that a crisis transformed me” - By Stephanie Carlin The sun was sparkling on the porch and my lemonade looked pearlescent in the sun. I was on a ranch in upstate New York, putting the finishing touches on a new program. It was going to show women how to use their intuition.

I thought I was ready to lead it, but I had some more expansion to do.

I believe in Higher Power, and so I said this prayer every morning:⁣ Creator Of All That Is, Teach me how to serve.

Show me how to use my power in the highest and best way.

Show me, Creator: how to release anything that isn’t serving my highest purpose.

Thank you, Creator. It is done, it is done, it is done -- and so it is.

No coincidence. No luck. ⁣Our universe is not random.

And so I continued to pray:⁣

And The Universe did what it does best: it began to rearrange itself.⁣

Creator Of All That Is, Teach me how to serve.

First, I got pregnant.

Show me how to use my power in the highest and best way.

I stared in horror at the pregnancy test. My silence echoed off the walls of my best friend’s guest bathroom.

But instead I stayed curious.⁣ I kept a wide-eyed wonder. ⁣

I wanted to say, “This can’t be happening…”

Show me, Creator: how to use these crises to serve my highest purpose.

Thank you, Creator. It is done, it is done, it is done -- and so it is.

“And I started to learn.

First I learned trust”.

I planted my feet firmly into Trust.

I trusted that little spirit had come to my womb to teach me something.

And when I heard her voice, I received psychic transmissions in tidal waves: ...She came to show me how stupid my insecurities are... ...How worthless my self-doubt is... ...How important my voice is...

I was literally broke and pregnant, living my worst nightmare. ⁣ So many times I wanted to say…⁣ “You’re finally a broke artist.

See? You ARE a fraud.”

But I took a deep breath, and armed myself with Trust. I stayed curious.⁣ I kept a wide-eyed wonder.

I am always the creator of my reality.

...How much I can do when I make truth my priority... ...She even understood I needed to birth other visions... ...and we made a pact that she could come back to me if she needed to be in my genetic line.⁣ 9 months later, my company The Women’s Collective was born.

Next I learned Ancestral Rage.

My course launch came to a screeching halt — and my bank account hit nearly $0 for the first 20

And that I am here to disrupt this brainwashing. ⁣

Woah.

But wait: there’s more...

2 weeks later I learned Irrefutable Faith.

The sun was sparkling on the porch again. I was still a little disassociated and numb from the abortion, and it took me aback when my mother called: Dad’s being airlifted to the hospital for an emergency triple bypass open heart surgery.

My vegan-yogi-marathon-runner of a father needed emergency surgery?

I almost started to shake but I was learning: stay curious. Be enraged, but trust.

When I stumbled into the ER, the doctors and nurses were already

The same weekend I took the abortion pill, I watched abortions after 6 weeks get banned in the southern US states.

I start shaking. How? What? Why? I tracked my cycle and I still didn’t know I was pregnant. If I didn’t know at 6 weeks, how did anyone know?

I could feel the cruelty of this law hit my womb.

I stayed wide-eyed: “Are you

prepping Dad for surgery. We were alone, but I thought, “Damn, this room is crowded” --⁣ ...because I could psychically see his Council of 12 around him.⁣ (The Council Of 12 are a group of metaphysical beings that assist the growth of every soul on this planet.

YOU have a Council of 12 you can call on to bring you guidance.

Everyone does.) ...and I psychically downloaded with the information: His Council of 12 was removing his fears through this surgery. Having surgery was one of Dad’s greatest fears.

They said: “We are removing this fear so he does not have to live with it anymore and he can fulfil his soul’s purpose. Don’t worry he’ll be fine.”

I stayed wide-eyed.

(Cut to the doctors telling Dad 6 months later that he’s the healthiest he’s ever been in his life) I⁣ took the lessons and ran with them. I scrapped the old plans and made new plans. I stepped into the bigger shoes Creator laid out for me.

I pivoted as an entrepreneur and quit everything that didn’t inspire Truth. And I more than recovered financially -- in the subsequent four weeks I made $40,000.

And so I ask you:⁣ Are you forcing an outcome from The Universe? Or are you listening?⁣ Ask Creator to torch everything in your life that stands between you and your Soul’s Purpose.⁣ Don’t ask for Mr. Perfect. Don’t ask for the economy to return to normal.⁣ Don’t fixate on a specific result.⁣

“Ask, with wide-eyed wonder, to be shown how to trust, how to have faith — and then listen.

Even if you don’t like the answers.⁣ Because the results will come -- when you trust yourself.”

to focus on the lower chakras which aid us in our third dimensional reality (survival, personal power, etc.) and bypass the heart chakra to connect to spirit by focussing on the third eye chakra, which is our psychic gateway.

Often, the reason for this neglect is emotional pain.

Located in the centre of the body, on the same level as our physical heart, is our Heart Chakra.

that links the lower aspects of our third dimensional (human) life with our higher dimensional, ‘spiritual selves’ and our connection to the universal, divine love.

When we talk about emotional healing, releasing those things that hold us back and doing the ‘selfwork’ to bring about transformation; working with the heart chakra can be an extremely powerful way of opening the doorway to emotional and spiritual growth.

This unconditional love and divine connection is the ‘soul food’ that is often missing from people’s lives. The heart chakra is tends to be one of the most neglected of our energy centres when it comes to healing and focus.

When opening the heart chakra, before the healing takes place, all of our stored emotional pain and unresolved trauma can rise to the surface to be acknowledged and transmuted, and this can be a difficult process.

Although, once you have released any blockages here, you will experience accelerated spiritual growth as well as immense, emotional freedom and lightness.

As you release the trapped pain, you make room for more light to move into that space and allow for unconditional self-love and spiritual sovereignty to be at the forefront of your reality, as you lovingly step into your power.

Here’s a visualisation I use regularly to work with the heart chakra.

To start, focus on your breathing, with

slow, deep breaths through your nose (thus slowing down your breath and filtering the oxygen).

Imagine the air you breath as golden, life-force energy, cleansing your cells as you inhale and expelling any stagnant energy as you exhale.

As you slowly inhale, feel the pranic energy flow towards your pineal gland (third eye) and as you slowly exhale, direct the out breath towards your heart chakra.

As you feel the flow of golden energy activate your heart chakra, allow any emotional ‘stuff’ to rise up without resistance and release it with love to the universe to be transmuted.

Finally... Know that you are always loved, you are always whole and you are exactly where you need to be on your healing path.

Life coach and self love expert Mala Kennedy shares how journalling can help us slow down and find peace.

I often feel swamped by the busyness of life. Pulled in so many directions to rise and yet often it gets me nowhere. Rising means slowing down. It is creating space for your brilliance to come through. When I find myself caught up in the ‘do do do’ I can find myself getting smaller.

So, this is my invitation for you to slow down. Have you ever felt so overwhelmed the clarity you are grasping for feels out of reach?

When it feels busy I find I have to look for the gaps. The pause between the doing, but sometimes I can be so overcome by my emotions that the pause can’t come through.

That’s when I turn inwards, to my journal. Journalling is such a useful tool. I apply it to many areas of my life. I turn to feelings journalling when my emotions take the lead.

This provides a release that stems from my nervous system.

I discovered this during a course by the Australian Centre for Holistic Studies. I have gone on to adapt it to suit my needs.

Whenever overwhelmed I can sometimes struggle to sit in stillness to meditate. I’m a mama and I am always home with the kids. The juggle between being a stay at home mum, and running a business is tricky. With my mind full of thoughts of planning the day sometimes it takes time to get clarity.

I have to ease into the slow.

This is where my feelings journalling steps in. It only has to take 5 minutes to be effective, and often I journal for longer. I tune into the feelings that are coming up for me. I identify a core feeling like

them. It weakens their hold on us until they can float away. I can sometimes find it too much to drop straight into meditation.

If my anxiety or overwhelm is running hot I need to clear it and journalling in this way is the medicine I need. From here I can be in meditation and there’s less chatter to shift before I go deep. I can get quiet quicker and with more ease and with a busy life this is a high priority for me. anxiety before I find a quiet space of solitude for it. I find I have to journal on the emotion for at least 5 minutes to be effective, and often I journal for longer.

I tune into the feelings that are coming up for me. I contemplate prompts such as, how does this feeling feel? What is it bringing up for me? Where does it stem from?

What does it want me to know?

From here I stream of consciousness journal. No filter, no punctuation, no editing. Doing this allows the feeling to remove its grip on me because I am witnessing it. Giving our emotions a voice weakens their hold on us. It frees us up to allow the pause to rise, and this is the playground of our soul.

Looking at emotions like this shifts

I treasure my time and finding ways to maximise it without negating any benefits is crucial.

I find this is a self-care

hack that goes a long way. I feel calmer, the more I do it. After you have journalled and meditated, contemplate what has risen for you.

Are new feelings awake within you, what are the possibilities? How are

you feeling now? Ruminate in this and let it wash over you, and return to it as often as you feel the pull.

The more you do it, the sweeter the symphony. This is slowness, this is the path to rise.

During the long weeks of lockdown in the Spring many of us looked at our wellbeing at all levels and tried to do things to improve it, whether that was beginning a ‘couch to 5k’ (I got as far as week 8 and then my knees started to hurt!!), eating more healthily, or looking at our mental and emotional wellbeing.

Emotionally and spiritually many of us felt the need for support and healing, my daily meditation practice became very important to me, it was a safe place in what seemed to be a world in constant flux.

Spiritually, the empty hours gave us time to consider ones ‘self’, we weren’t able to hide behind the busyness of day –to-day life, we were able to see where we were at, and take a good look inside ourselves. It takes strength and bravery to be able to take that look, and even more so to bring what we find out into the open, 34

but it is bringing it out that helps us to face our long hidden hurts and helps us to ultimately heal.

They made it look and feel like yes in fact I was useless, not capable, not comparable to others and should just sit back down.

Sick of the cycle, I started to explore personal development.

I spent three years in what I thought was a phase of personal development.

I focused on removing money blocks.

I focused on affirming, releasing, reframing.

I focused on pretending that I was actually doing something I enjoyed, because it was easier and came with less emotional response than doing what I would have LOVED to have done.

I basically piled all of my ‘I’m sick ofs’ into one big pile and gave them ALL the power.

They became more and more difficult to navigate.

I convinced myself and was convinced by many a book that this was not easy, but worthwhile to persist.

It was something I read quite a lot that change is hard.

They became the sole focus.

The harder it got, the more I resisted and the more I tried to ‘work’ even harder to overcome.

Of course they would become a deeper part of my story, I mean, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but when you are listening to, reading, learning ways to reinvent yourself, it almost always centres around identifying your beliefs and making new ones, and ones that are in direct contradiction.

Then it got harder on another level, I started to doubt that I could ever get out of the ‘I’m sick of’ cycle.

Seems like a logical thing but if you are making plans to not be skint, you are confirming you are skint.

Then I gave up and just surrendered.

In that time, it would probably look from the outside that I was doing well, but on the inside, I was mentally exhausted.

If you are making plans that you are finally going to share your message with the world, you are confirming that you are holding it back.

I spent three years trying to wash my dishes in dirty water.

Have you ever given up on a friendship?

There is a reason for the saying:

“People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

When you figure out which one it is, you will know what to do for each person.”

The experience was dreadful!

And, that isn’t an understatement. For the first time in nearly twenty years, I saw my friend in a completely different light.

– Author Unknown I offered to help a dear friend in need of office support (another superpower I have), I had offered many times before, so didn’t think anything of it, when I didn’t hear anything back.

Then suddenly, out of the blue, I received a message asking if I was serious about my offer of help and a proposal followed.

It was then that resistance hit hard! I was overwhelmed with the prospect of blurring the boundaries of our

friendship as well as anxious about learning everything for this job role from scratch. So, I asked for signs from the universe, I talked it through with my partner and kids and everyone agreed, that I wouldn’t know until I

The business was led by fear and not by the heart. It was fuelled from a lack mindset rather than a place of abundance.

After a short period of time (which felt like months), I realised I wasn’t there for the Practice per-se, but for my friend, to align her with her business. To value her staff and be a leader. To come from the heart.

In one of our weekly meetings, I mentioned my deeper understanding of what my purpose at the Practice was and she cried. She sat in front of me, opening up, tears pouring down her face and stated that she believed herself to be a failure and that it was so hard running the business when she felt she disappointed everyone. Now, having had insights into her feelings of the business and how she felt about those she hired – I was surprised with this rawness of emotion.

It certainly wasn’t evident in the way she ran the business and how

everyone felt being there.

Her staff, including myself, walked on eggshells around her, as nothing was ever good enough. We constantly felt like we disappointed her!

It was then, I realised we had passed over from being friends, to me being a Resource – one that wasn’t up to the task and one that didn’t want to actually be there anymore. I was grieving our friendship. I raised it with her, and she said that I was being silly, of course we were still friends, however, business was business. These boundaries were necessary for her to be the ‘leader’ and she closed up again.

This insight had me conflicted, I was starting to feel fearful of being in the office, yet I deeply wanted to help my friend succeed. I had given her Brené Brown’s book ‘Dare to Lead’ for her birthday and this quote came to mind: I started acting out of fear. I lost my confidence completing everyday tasks that I could do with my eyes closed. Then, it all fell apart one Friday afternoon, when I revealed a task I was working on wasn’t complete and I had lost my way a bit (mainly out of fear) and needed some support. I had asked my partner to assist as he a guru at all thing’s spreadsheet. An innocent request that had my friend accusing me of criminal behaviour and threatened to call the police.

I sat there, utterly defeated and feeling broken inside, and knew it was time to release our friendship. It was beyond saving and I wouldn’t ever feel safe in her presence again.

The trust between us was broken.

Was it time for our friendship to end? We had what some would call a Lifetime friendship. We had been through so much for it to end this way. Was there a deeper meaning at play? I’ll never really know. All I do know is that I look back on our friendship with love and happy memories. I wish her well and hope her business can one day be led from the heart.

I’ve not seen her in nearly a year. We don’t communicate or follow each other on social media. It still hurts. I have a hole in my heart where she used to reside.

My work ethic demanded I see out the end of my contract. I completed all my tasks, went above and beyond what needed to be done for a handover and I walked out the office For now, the season has changed, one midwinter’s afternoon and felt hollow inside. However, I was free and we have both moved in to begin breathing again after what different directions.

You may actually be surprised at the kinds of businesses that are thriving right now. Etsy, for example, reported growth of between 50128% in various categories year over year during the second quarter of 2020, and masks only accounted for growth in one of the categories!

Starting A Business In A Time Of Chaos It is safe to say that 2020 did not shape up to be anything like any of us thought it would, especially in the business world. Many people lost their jobs, others faced crazy changes in their hours. And many current

and aspiring entrepreneurs saw their dreams, hopes, and plans get swept away due to the pandemic.

But the entrepreneurial spirit is not something that can be kept down

Obviously, certain kinds of businesses would be a struggle to start right now, including most businesses that involve heavy person-to-person contact.

Certain types of tourismrelated businesses are also suffering right now, especially if they involve international travel.

However, even in those industries, there are

many customers will be looking to shop online before they arrive in person, and many more will want to order online for curbside pickup. Make sure that your website has multiple well-shot images for every product, gives people a low- or no-contact option, and is very clear on what hours you are open and if you have specific mask policies or if you only admit a certain number of customers at a time.

Luxury goods, however, are not the most promising field to be in right now, as the market is expected to contract by up to 35% this year.

Let’s Get It Started So how does all this information translate to businesses that you might start? Here are a few tips: 1. People are craving realness right now. Handcrafted goods, especially things that feel heirloom-quality, are very popular right now. People are also purchasing more items for their homes, their yards, and their kitchens, as quarantine keeps us closer to home and forces us to brush up on the homemaking 50

2. Self-improvement, including coaching and courses, are also thriving. People are seeking new skills, especially in areas related to careers and entrepreneurship.

3. Start small and cheap. There are many businesses that can be started with just a website, a business idea, and perhaps some business cards. Because no one is sure just how long the pandemic and economic slowdown will last, it can be tricky to start a business that has a high overhead or that requires investment in a lot of supplies or machines.

I went in search, but this took time.

I mean, how can you find a solution if you don’t know what you’re looking for?! I finally found some fabulous therapies that helped me back to recovery including Reiki, Counselling, Coaching and Energy Healing. That is when my desire to help people gain easier access to a world full of options that best suit them and their lifestyle, was born.

However, it wasn’t until a good 10 years later that I met Alexis and learnt we desired similar things.

Alexis & Ursula Each month we pick a spiritual/alternative business owner to go under our spotlight. This month we interviewed Alexis Dowd and Ursula Wood of Wellbeing Umbrella...

Let the questions begin...

1. What is your mission?

Our mission is very much to help people with a wellness challenge find the right solution, and connect more easily to people and providers who genuinely care and want to make a difference in the lives of others.

2. When and how did you know this was what you were meant to do?

Ursula: I’m not sure I ever really 52

did know that I was meant to do what I’m doing. It’s only looking back that I can figure out how certain experiences in my life or particular occupations have prepared me nicely for what I do now. If it wasn’t for experiencing stress and ultimately burnout 13 years back as a Nurse, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to realise that not enough was being done to introduce people to the many other wellness solutions out there.

At the time, the health service only offered me medication and an 8-month wait for counselling.

Neither were helping me to get better or back to work – I was desperate for other avenues and options.

Once we chatted, it just felt like fate.

There has been times when it would have been easier for both of us to walk away from the business, but there’s something bigger than myself just nudging me on. I cannot walk away even if I wanted to – it is literally destiny! Fortunately, I love

my business partner, so all’s well!

Alexis: it all started when I was

travelling around Oz for a year on my own in 2009, I began to open-up and connect to spirit. I continued developing once I arrived home, regularly I would invoke the angelic realms and ask for guidance on ‘how I could best be of service’. Shortly after asking, I started to receive ‘images’ and experience intense feelings. I remember saying ‘ooh this is big’. I laughed often, because even though I wasn’t sure what my destiny fully involved, I knew enough to know from the images I saw, that it involved wellbeing and technology! And at that time, I could only just use email and log on to websites, but anything else would have been a stretch.

purpose. There was a large amount of time and money wasted so we were hesitant to move forward with this again for some time. But it feels the right time now and things are moving forward nicely. Yay!

For a few years, life carried on and every so often I’d experience the same images and feelings. It was only after communicating with Ursula (after meeting at a workshop for the first time, some 12 months previous) that I remember getting ‘Goosebumps all over’. I knew we had to meet again in person to chat and discuss our ideas, and when we did, it really felt like it was meant to be. Even though our 3 year journey hasn’t always been easy, we’ve learned some priceless lessons along the way and experiences that may have torn other business partnerships apart, only brought us closer together.

To listen to our intuition more, to only do business with the people who resonate with us, that a bad experience bears more positives if you’re willing to look for them and that if you ever put a deadline date to something ensure you double it and then multiply it by two!

If your actions are coming from a place of fear or scarcity take stock as that path will take you off course, or at least for a little while anyway.

Ursula: I don’t really see myself

as having a purpose in that sense other than to experience life, know ‘myself’ better and grow. In doing so, one becomes more enlightened, loving and positively impacts/ inspires others.

Alexis: To follow and listen to

my intuition, learn and grow from challenges and be able to truly let go. Live in the moment and enjoy life, reaching a sense of fulfilment and freedom.

7. What is your definition of success?

Being content and stable within that sense of feeling happy within whatever the current reality looks like!

8. Is there anything you find yourself always saying to your clients/customers?

Yes, many wellbeing businesses can sometimes feel disheartened after creating wonderful content, useful

resources, yet not reach what they feel is a good level of interaction, enquiries, or sales in exchange. It can leave them feeling deflated, like they’ve wasted their time and a general ‘what’s the point’. So we remind them that whilst it can feel this way, people buy from people they ‘Know, Like and Trust’ and in the long run, their efforts will pay off as they build upon these three aspects in their Marketing. More often than not, you will need to take your potential client or customer on a ‘get know you journey’ before they buy into you, your service or products.

9. What do you wish you had known before you started your business?

Ursula: I don’t necessarily wish I’d

known something before starting business, but instead I’d have loved to have been more in touch with my higher self/wisdom and not worked as hard, as the journey would have been less bumpy and I’d have been

more loving to myself. However, that said there are no mistakes on this journey and I was exactly where I was meant to be, experiencing what I was meant to experience for an overarching reason bigger than me!

Not that I don’t shake my fists at the universe now and again, when things don’t go my way! Lol!

Alexis: You’ll never take a ‘holiday’

the same way you once did. It can take a while to learn how to completely ‘switch off’ and enjoy time with your family and friends without feeling guilty.

Once you’ve set out your hours of work, stick to them. Don’t feel compelled to reply to people at midnight. Initially my mobile phone felt like a ball and chain and even caused anxiety and 56

overwhelm. I dreaded the ‘ping sound’.

10. Tell us why you love doing what you do?

Much like raising a family you have your good and bad days, but for us we love doing what we do in business because it just feels so intrinsically right within, what we do isn’t always about us, it’s about following the nudges within that results in us being of service to others.

11. How can we find you?

Our very own seasonal foraging expert and kitchen witch Jill Wheeler brings us her special recipe for Sloe Gin

As the month of September winds down and summer has faded, take a walk in the countryside. If you are lucky, you will come across a Blackthorn tree or two. Walk along the edge of fields were livestock are kept and you may find this thorny friend dripping with purple fruit.

This is the sloe berry.

The Blackthorn bush has ancient associations with witchcraft and

folklore, hence where it probably gets its name the Wishing Thorn.

Also called the Mother of the Woods as it aids and shelters other small trees and shrubs, the tree of protection.

The Blackthorn was seen to have magical qualities. Its thorns and branches were used in rituals and certain mischief for witches. It is said that a fairy tribe guards the blackthorn tree and that bad luck can follow from cutting branches on certain days of the year and bringing its blossom into the home. So be sure to go careful in its presence, take only what you need and leave some berries for the birds who rely on them for winter food.

Express gratitude for your harvest and maybe leave an offering for the fairies of the tree.

Sloes have many medicinal benefits, however, be sure to do your homework if you have any medical conditions that may be exacerbated with their consumption. They are anti-inflammatory and can improve digestion. They can reduce bloating and help in detoxification as they are rich in rutin. Sloes are rich in these flavonoids. They are often best picked after a frost (so maybe

into October and even November if you can find any), however you can replicate this by freezing them before use. They have quite hard skins that are softened by the frost, however you can alternatively prick their skins before use. Make sure to wear long sleeves and gloves if you plan to harvest some of the berries, the spiky thorns on the bush can cause infection.

Sloes can be used to make jam, however, they are most popular and commonly used to make sloe gin.

So this months recipe is homemade sloe gin.

Sloe Gin Recipe

Jill Wheeler (Jilly) is a mum of two, vegan cook, who is passionate about cooking and foraging for food.

You will need..

Pour the gin into a clean litre jar or any glass container with a lid.

• 1 bottle (75cl) of London Dry Gin.

Thoroughly clean then prick the sloes with a sharp knife and add to the container along with the sugar.

Stir to help dissolve the sugar and repeat this process daily for around a week. Then it’s a waiting game.

• Enough sloes to fill at least half the container you will use (around 300g) – the more you use the stronger the flavour.

Move the jar to a cool, damp place and leave for 3-6 months. Strain out the sloes (set aside for other uses – see below) using some fine muslin cloth or a cheese bag into a bottle.

It is recommended at this stage that you leave the gin to mature for up

• 200g sugar. to a year if you can wait that long. You can always sample it until its to your liking. It makes a lovely seasonal gift if you can bare to part with it, alternatively pour and enjoy.

The boozy sloes that have been removed can still be put to further use rather than waste.

You can add the boozy sloes to puddings, icecream or yoghurt.

You can also make homemade Sloe Brandy by adding the sloes to some red wine with a little sugar and leave for a few months before straining again.

A note on foraging...

Whatever you choose to forage, be aware of foragers etiquette and a few legalities. Firstly, you can collect fruit, flowers, foliage and fungi from land that it is growing wild. Never uproot any plants without the land owners permission or on protected sites. Be mindful of trespass, if asked leave immediately, although you can keep your foraged items Only take what you need. Never strip

an area of its fruit or flowers. The flowers become fruit for wildlife later in the season. The fruit are important to birds during the winter season when there is little else to eat.

Ideally you should take a little from each bush or tree where you find an abundance, so you leave little trace

However, let’s wind it back 3 years...

It’s tricky to find a start point for telling your story when you acknowledge everything that led you to this very point for good reason. So, let’s start with the time I pushed the reset button.

I was 41 years old and in utter confusion. Yet something inside of

me knew I needed change. I was unhappy, floating around in life with apparently everything anyone could ever wish for. I had the brand new car, a beautiful wife, a big house in the country and a steady income. Yet something was amiss, not right. I had not long relocated and found myself isolated as a wedding photographer, working weekends and editing home alone all week. The move has really shaken my foundations, away from my friends and support network, I fast became trapped and consumed with fear and anxiety. I remember things like having to go to the post office to send somebody images becoming such a mission it would literally take me most of the day to pluck up the courage, twitching the curtains

to ensure I would bump into neighbours on the drive. Arriving at the counter head down and realising I hadn’t even addressed the parcel, I nearly died on the spot and ran out of the shop, leaving the staff looking bewildered. So bizarre that I was able to continue my work but I think I lost half a stone in worry

when it came to a shoot, a job I was good at and well rehearsed in after 10 years experience at point, I think I just turned into someone else when I arrived, a convincing act.

Once I was out of rented accommodation and into such an amazing home we had bought, the stuff of 63

had always been seeking happiness, something more than everything I could see. I did the hardest thing I have ever done, not even really conscious of the implications or ramifications. Not even conscious of why but when I looked at it, I was running away without knowing where I was running to. I left it all.

Shortly following this drastic reset, comes the awakening! dreams, I remember one day looking over to the neighbour attending his pristine garden. He was in retirement, again he also had an amazing car, house, wife. But I just remember observing him and thinking ‘Is that it’?

I have no idea what was going through my mind when I look back at these times, the thought processes were so jumbled, I had been drinking too much for years as band aid for my emotions I now realise.

I do know I had a good life, a good marriage, yet somehow had reached the conclusion that I had to leave it all, leave everything.

still running, further and further away from what I had become so detached from, my soul. My soul was screaming at me. I’d always had a big heart, time for those in need, those struggling to fit into society both in the workplace and outside of it. Now that I reflect, it’s obvious, I was seemingly successful in life as we know it, materialistically and socially. I’d always been successful at fitting in, being who I needed to be growing up in order to be accepted by my mother, very different to who I needed to be with my father, and again, my brother. Yet inside, I had always felt split, subconsciously confused and alone. So yes I was successful, successfully wearing masks, at conning people, at conning myself and fearful of judgement, showing weakness.

It’s only with recent hindsight I can say that because of so many unaddressed issues in my past, and because this success was merely something I had strived for thinking it meant happiness, without realising that actually it was So I had no idea all just another mask and that I was who I was. I

The next four months saw me drinking more heavily than ever in the company of what I had been chasing my whole life on and off really, my old man. On medication as I was really struggling to go through with some of my wedding bookings due to anxiety. Then I was kicked out

of my Dads, the best thing that could have happened really. So I went to my Mums, I stopped drinking, came off of my medication, finally had the realisation that in seeking another woman I was merely searching externally for completion and happiness and in fact it was really messing with my energy.

Completely bonkers that I was even attempting that but such was the mess of everything. Those that I had met though, had all been dabbling into at least one element or another of spirituality, and that’s what I was pursuing for myself.

“Two years ago, the true work began”.

All day, every day I was visualising the ending of my life. I knew where, I knew how, I think I was a whisper away from taking that step, the straw that could break the camel’s back.

It was overwhelming, painful, all consuming. I somehow managed to function to attend a spiritual event, searching, searching, searching. I couldn’t focus on any of the self help books recommended to me, nothing I was being told was really going in or resonating. I tried facing my fears with some spiritual healing course that wasn’t for me, I left. I did meet a girl at that point, for a few months.

I wasn’t used to confrontation in a relationship, never mind projection, this took me further down, frozen with fear, unable to talk. I soon walked from that and in doing so knew that actually Roberto, you need to be consciously single to sort out this mess and for the first time in life, I stuck to it.

I still couldn’t cry, I can’t remember a time I did cry, maybe 30 seconds at, or after a funeral, maybe as a small child being dropped off from my dad, or falling off my bike, but for 35 years, everything was stored

inside.

Maybe tears would form, but no emotion was coming out.

There was darkness for many days at a time, but I had the gift of time to be in that space. The ongoing divorce was horrible and I still had no idea if I had done the right thing. In between this I would binge watch Teal Swan for hours on end. Finally something resonated with me, made sense, something to follow, latch onto. She has a method called the completion process and I found myself looking up one of her UK practitioners.

Zannah Mericks, an angel, someone with the natural born skill and expertise to reach me through the darkness, intricately navigating my complex ego, defence, mess of a brain. She steadied my ship and in doing so helped me discover my path. The beginning of this path was in a foreign land, and another dimension. Not only did she help for a few months during my sessions with her, but I was about to set sail for Peru and dive deep on a new journey. Ayahuasca was calling me.

“It was a no brainer. It was a knowing.

It was a last ditch effort. It was hope”.

After all with a history of drug abuse throughout my childhood and fairly short lived Army career, okay and beyond, this was what I knew. Little

did I know what lay ahead of me during the most intense experience and four weeks of my entire life.
