FACULTY’S WELCOME

As Director of Competitions for the faculty, I see a very strong synergy between the Law Society’s studentled initiatives and the Faculty’s formal competitions program For students looking to elevate their legal education, LawSoc competitions serve as an essential "pipeline" and training ground for the Facultysupported international offerings

The Path from LawSoc to International Success

The Faculty deeply values the work of LawSoc, recognising it as a premier environment for students to cut their teeth on advocacy, negotiation, and mediation Participating in LawSoc moots and competitions is one of the most effective ways to demonstrate the core criteria required for Faculty selection: public speaking, advocacy, negotiation skills, and a proven passion for the subject matter

By the time students reach the elective stage of their degree, the foundational "learning by doing" provided by LawSoc may make them "competition-ready" for the global stage. To be eligible you must have completed 78 LAWS or 72 JURD OUCs by the time the competition starts.

Faculty-Supported International Offerings

The Faculty currently supports six prestigious international competitions where students receive 6 UOCs and formal grading:

Jessup Public International Law Moot (National round in Canberra and International rounds in Washington DC): Handling fictional public law disputes before the International Court of Justice.

Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vienna): Focusing on international contract law and the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG)

Oxford International Intellectual Property Law Moot (Oxford): Covering trademarks, patents, and copyrights

IBA-VIAC Consensual Dispute Resolution Competition (CDRC) (Vienna): A mediation-based competition built on the Vis Moot problem.

Pictet International Humanitarian Law Competition: Engaging in role-plays and simulations of armed conflict.

ICC Mediation Competition (Paris): Resolving international business disputes through professional mediation

Support and Funding

We are committed to ensuring these world-class opportunities are accessible The Faculty provides financial support, offering a travel and accommodation allowance of $3,200 to selected students (Pictet allowance is less as the competition itself provides accommodation). Furthermore, we are proud to fully fund the travel and accommodation costs for our Gateway and Indigenous students to ensure equity of opportunity Additional support, such as the Danielle Sirmai Memorial Award ($7,000), may also be available to eligible participants in the Vis moot

Further the Landerer scholarship of $6,000 will also be available for five exceptional students for the next three years. The Landerer scholarship replaces the faculty allowance.

Applications for most 2027 competitions open mid-2026 We encourage all eligible LawSoc competitors to leverage their experience and apply to represent UNSW on the world stage

My experience is that, almost without exception, student experience competing is the highlight of their law degree.

Yours sincerely,

PRESIDENTS’ WELCOME

Welcome to our 2026 UNSW Law Society Competitions Guide!

Whether you are completely new to competitions or returning as a seasoned competitor, we are so glad to have you.

UNSW Law Society has an exceptionally strong tradition in legal competitions. Our teams consistently achieve outstanding results across various skills competitions and mooting tournaments, both across Australia and internationally. This year alone, our competitors proudly represented UNSW on the global stage in Amsterdam, Vienna, and Paris, demonstrating the excellence, dedication, and professionalism that define our competitions community.

The UNSW Law Society is immensely proud to support our competitors at every stage of their journey. We are committed to continuing this support, not only for our experienced competitors, but also for new students who are just beginning to explore what competitions have to offer.

For those who are entering their first year, we strongly encourage you to take the opportunity to involve yourself in as many competitions as possible Competitions are one of the most valuable extracurricular experiences available to law students and are viewed extremely positively by future employers. Whether it is developing practical skills that are directly applicable to the legal profession or building lasting friendships and creating unforgettable memories, competitions will accelerate your personal and professional growth beyond the classroom.

For those who have already been competing, don’t be afraid to try something new or challenge yourself further. Our wide selection of competitions provide the perfect environment to step outside of your comfort zone and to do just that.

On behalf of the UNSW Law Society, we wish you every success in the year ahead and we cannot wait to see you continue to uphold the outstanding reputation of UNSW competitors.

Kind regards,

VICE PRESIDENTS’ WELCOME

Welcome to our inaugural UNSW Law Society Competitions Guide!

The UNSW Law Society offers a diverse range of competitions that extend far beyond what students learn in the classroom. These competitions provide some of the most valuable opportunities for students to develop practical legal skills, build confidence and learn through real experience No matter where you are in your law school journey, it is never too late to get involved, as every competition is designed to support learning at every stage.

We hope this guide can serve as your starting point for exploring the wide range of mooting and skills competitions available throughout the year. From internal competitions designed to introduce students to advocacy and practical lawyering skills in a supportive environment, to external and faculty-led competitions that take UNSW students onto national and international stages. There is truly something for everyone, regardless of your experience.

Inside this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about how our competitions work, how to get involved, and what to expect Whether you ’ re considering competing for the first time or looking to continue building on previous experience, remember that competitions are not about having everything figured out from the start. They are about learning by doing, finding your own style and growing with each round!

Above all, our competitions are about connection, with other students, with judges and mentors, and with a community that supports one another’s development We are confident that the friendships you form and the connections you make, will become one of the most meaningful and lasting parts of your time in competitions.

We hope this guide helps you find the challenges that excite you and gives you the confidence to take that first step to explore something new We look forward to supporting you throughout the year seeing the energy and enthusiasm that UNSW competitors bring to every competition!

Warm Regards, Andrew Tutos (Vice-President Mooting) & Catherine Duong (Vice-President Skills)

Internal skills competitions are those run by the UNSW Law Society Skills Portfolio, open to all UNSW Law students (subject to eligibility criteria for the specific competitions). These are the ideal spaces to get involved, develop practical skills and an important stepping stone if you want to be involved in intervarsity competitions in the future.

These are individual competitions, but working collaboratively or signing up with a partner are both welcome and encouraged for relevant competitions.

For each competition, to be eligible for the final rounds, you must compete in BOTH preliminary rounds.

The dates included are subject to change, keep an eye on social media or email the portfolio if there are any questions.

Domestic intervarsity skills competitions involve a selection process, where a team of UNSW students are selected to represent the university and UNSW Law Soc by competing against other universities.

The dates provided for these competitions are based on previous years and best estimates. It is strongly recommended to keep an eye on Law Soc’s Facebook page, where information about applying is made available. Selection is aimed to be a few weeks prior to the competition, but this remains dependent on when dates are decided and communicated to the Intervarsity Skills Directors.

Note: dates are indicative only and are subject to change.
