Street households win big on the lottery!

R

ICK Robinson forgot he was still playing the Postcode Lottery - until he got a phone call informing him he had won £500,000. The Army veteran was among eight winners with the postcode BA16 0LW, in Street, which picked up the top prize in the lottery's monthly draw on August 29. Former Royal Artillery soldier Rick had two tickets each winning £250,000 landing him his half-million pound prize. "I totally forgot that I was still playing," the 58-year-old said. "I thought it was a joke initially when I got a call from someone claiming to be from Postcode Lottery and they said, 'You’ve won a prize'. I thought, 'No, I haven’t'. "So immediately when I put the phone down, I checked my banking app and realised that I was playing the Postcode

Lottery and it was real." In total, the winning neighbours have netted a whopping £2.25 million – with each ticket worth £250,000. Rick was with wife Sharon, 56, when Postcode Lottery’s Matt Johnson presented their prize. "I couldn’t take it in, if I’m honest. It was too much to believe," Rick went on. "I can’t even comprehend how much that is."

Stay independent at home with a live-in carer

Sharon added: "Someone will need to scrape me up off the floor." The couple now intend to invest some of their winnings in finishing a restoration project - a 1985 converted ambulance campervan. The pair have four children and four grandchildren, with a fifth grandchild due later this year, with youngest daughter Rosie expecting her first child in late November.

And the win couldn’t have come at a better time because the couple's 170-year-old terraced home was hit by devastating flooding after a torrential downpour recently. Elsewhere in the street, retired accountant Tel Hayes was also celebrating a £250,000 windfall. The 77-year-old, and wife Morveen, 81, said they were "stunned" when news of the win came through. Tel said: "I can’t believe it. Just stunned, really. I’ve never had or expected to have that much money. It’s beyond our wildest dreams." Morveen added: "I said I’d just be grateful and delighted if it was like £10,000." The former local government accountant and Morveen already have an exciting trip planned – a cruise through the spectacular Norwegian Fjords in October.

Discussion of Levels National Park plan

A

N EVENT next month will hear views and answer questions from the public on a campaign to have the Somerset Levels designated the UK’s next National Park. The idea – launched by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) in Somerset as part of celebrations to mark its centenary – was first revealed in April and is backed by your Leveller. The CPRE was at the forefront of the campaign to establish our UK National Parks, early in the 20th century. And to mark 100 years of fighting to protect UK countryside, CPRE Somerset launched its own big idea. They think that the Somerset Levels has what it takes to become the UK’s next National Park – and we agree. A CPRE spokesperson said: “Having spent several months talking to local key players about the idea, they now want to hear what the public thinks.” To get the views of Somerset people and lovers of the Levels, CPRE Somerset is hosting a Question Time-style event looking at the special qualities of the Levels and exploring what National Park status might

The Levels are the topic of a Question Time-style event on October 1

mean for our landscapes, people and nature. The event will take place at Glastonbury Town Hall between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on Thursday, October 1. CPRE chair Simon Murray will host the discussion, alongside a panel of guests who will share their opinions on the possible benefits and impacts of the Somerset Levels becoming a National Park. And the public are invited to come with their own questions – and an open mind. The panel includes representatives from the farming community, Somerset Wildlife Trust, Somerset Eel Recovery Project, Visit Somerset – and your Leveller.

Becky Collier, CPRE Somerset manager, said: “A Somerset Levels National Park is a big idea, but isn’t it about time we did something big to celebrate and protect this unique and wonderful place? “We know it will be a long and complex road to try to get National Park status, and we are just at the very beginning. It’s important that local people have a voice in the process. That’s why we want as many people as possible to come along on the night to ask questions – and to listen to each other’s ideas. We look forward to seeing you there.” Leveller editor-in-chief, Paul Jones, added: “The Levels rate among the UK’s most important

– and beautiful – spots, yet just 13% of them have any form of protection. “Somerset needs to shout about its beauty, its history and its role in the wider world. Making the Somerset Levels a National Park would be a great way of doing exactly that. I’m looking forward to hearing from anyone with an interest in the Levels on October 1, so please do get along.” The event is free but advance booking is advised. For more information on the Somerset Levels National Park campaign, and to book your place for October 1, visit www. cpresomerset.org.uk, where you can also take part in a survey garnering people’s ideas.

Temporary traffic lights during wall repairs A BUSY Somerset route will be partially closed for around three weeks as work takes place to repair a wall damaged in a crash. Temporary traffic lights are set to be installed on a section of the A371 near Croscombe from September 7, while Somerset Council carries out the “vital” repair. “Part of a stone boundary wall between the road and the River Sheppey has collapsed after a road traffic collision,” a council spokesperson said. “The road will operate under

temporary two-way traffic lights for around three weeks to allow the damaged section of wall to be rebuilt. “The work will include removing the collapsed section of wall from the river and embankment, storing it on the footway and highway before it is reused in the reconstruction of the wall.” They said the partial closure was needed “to allow contractors to work safely and store essential materials”. “It also has to be done during drier weather because the

affected road is so close to the waterway,” they added. The two-way lights will be manually operated from 7am to 6.30pm. Councillor Richard Wilkins, the council’s lead member for highways and transport, said: “It’s vital that the work is done

soon before the onset of autumn and potential persistent rain. “Decisions to close part of a road are not taken lightly. In this case it’s a very restricted site due to the proximity of the river. “We appreciate the inconvenience for road users and thank them in advance for their patience and understanding while this section of wall is repaired and made safe.” A dedicated telephone number – 07515 569430 – will be available for any emergency or urgent enquiries relating to the works.

Theft from supermarket lands man with public drinking ban

G

LASTONBURY man Leslie Roper has been ordered not to enter Glastonbury, not to drink alcohol in public, or cause a nuisance after admitting theft from A Taunton supermarket. Roper, of Street Road, Glastonbury, was handed a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) when he appeared at Taunton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 26. The 47-year-old was sentenced for a theft offence committed in November 2024, when he stole a number of items from Aldi, in Chip Lane, Taunton. He was conditionally discharged for eight months, ordered to pay £50 compensation, and handed the CBO, which will be in place for three years. The order against Leslie Roper is designed to prevent further offending and protect the community and comes with conditions, which include: Must not enter Glastonbury with the exception of attending a pre-arranged medical appointment. Must not be in possession of or consume open alcohol in any

public place within Somerset. Must not possess, carry, use, or have under their control any prescription-only medication unless it has been lawfully prescribed by a registered medical practitioner. Must not enter or loiter outside any premises from which Roper has received a written exclusion/ban. Must not enter on any private property, including any dwelling, garden, driveway, yard, garage, outbuilding, or other curtilage, without the express permission of the lawful occupier or owner. Must not enter or remain in any public toilet except for the genuine use of the toilet and associated washing facilities and must leave the premises immediately upon completion of that use. Must not engage or threaten to engage in a manner capable of causing nuisance, annoyance alarm, harassment or distress by words or actions to any member of the public or emergency services or person who is carrying out their employment. The CBO has been issued under the Anti-Social

Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and a breach of the order is a criminal offence. After the sentencing, Neighbourhood Inspector Rachel Clark, said: “This represents a significant and positive outcome for the community of Glastonbury. “The court was satisfied that Mr Roper’s behaviour had caused persistent anti-social behaviour and that the order is necessary to prevent further offending and nuisance. “The granting of a three-year CBO provides both clear restrictions and robust enforcement to address future breaches and protect the wider community. “We would like to thank the residents, businesses, and wider community of Glastonbury for their cooperation. Without their continued reporting of incidents, provision of evidence and willingness to highlight the impact that this behaviour was having on the community, it would not have been possible to present such a comprehensive case to the court. Their support has been invaluable in securing this outcome.”

TWO boys – aged 16 and 17 – have been charged with a number of crimes, including rape. The pair, from Somerset, have been remanded into youth detention after appearing at Taunton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (September 2). A 17-year-old is charged with: Three counts of rape of a girl aged under 16, one count of non-fatal strangulation, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm. A 16-year-old is charged with: Three counts of rape of a girl aged under 16, one count of rape of a woman aged 16 or over, one count of non-fatal strangulation, one count of assault causing bodily harm. The alleged offences happened at addresses in North Somerset, West Somerset, and in Cornwall, and relate to a vulnerable young woman and two teenage girls aged under 16. “Legally, neither boy can be named due to their age. Both boys’ self-defined ethnicity is white British,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. “They have been remanded into youth detention pending a further hearing at Taunton Crown Court (sitting at North Somerset Courthouse) on Friday, September 25.”

Road closure A MAIN route through Langport will be closed for a day while work on broadband connections is carried out. The closure of The Hill will run from 9am to 3.30pm on September 25. It is the latest in a number of road closures in the town and will enable broadband firm Gigaclear to “carry out cable span works to provide connection for a new install”.

Funding for busy roundabout makeover

A

ROUNDABOUT which handles traffic heading to the Somerset coast from the M5 is to get a major revamp – with work starting next year. The Edithmead M5 Junction 22 roundabout, near Burnhamon-Sea, is among key A38 works set to move forward next year following a decision by Somerset Council’s Executive committee. Improvements to the A38 between Burnham-on-Sea and Barrow Gurney – a joint project with North Somerset Council – were given the thumbs-up by Government last year, subject to a Final Business Case, which was submitted jointly in June 2026. Each authority is handling procurement and delivery in its own area. On September 2, Somerset Council’s Executive approved funding and contract arrangements.

The budget for the scheme is just under £18.8 million; £9 million comes from Government, pending approval of a final business case from the Department for Transport; Executive this week approved the allocation of £7.34 million which includes Local Transport Grant funding and underspend from previous major schemes. Some funding also comes from developer contributions. Key proposed A38 schemes in the Somerset Council area are: • Edithmead Roundabout near J22 M5: Creation of thoughabout traffic signals where the heaviest traffic flow is routed through the centre of the roundabout to improve capacity and ensure queueing does not go back onto the M5. A signalised cycle crossing on the B3140 via the enlarged splitter island is also included. • Rooksbridge: Safety scheme comprising mainly road

markings. • Cross: Creation of a staggered junction arrangement. • Strawberry Line Crossing: Enhanced visibility measures and upgraded signage. Lead member for highways and transport, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “We have worked hard to lobby Government to support these vital improvements which include more capacity on the Edithmead roundabout to cope with future economic and residential growth, and some safety improvements at key junctions on the route." Contractor Centregreat will carry out the Edithmead work,

procured as part of their contract for the recent Dunball Junction 23 scheme, while other improvements are being done by Somerset’s existing infrastructure partner Octavius. Work is expected to start in the first quarter of 2027 pending award of funding from the government, while Somerset Council has worked in partnership with North Somerset Council (NSC) to secure external funding for the improvement schemes on a stretch of the A38 which runs from the Edithmead Roundabout at Junction 22 of the M5 to the South Bristol Link (Colliters Way). Many junctions along the route are operating close to capacity leading to varying travel speeds, poor conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, unreliable journey times and congestion at peak times, along with potential road safety issues, the authorities said.

Greens win Frome vote

G

REEN Party candidate Dominic Ellison has been voted on to Somerset Council – replacing a representative jailed for his role in a Just Stop Oil (JSO) protest. Mr Ellison has been voted in as the representative for Frome West on the authority after a by-election on Thursday (September 3). The poll was to fill the seat on Somerset Council vacated after the resignation of former Green Party representative, Michael Dunk. Mr Dunk formally resigned from his seat after he was jailed for 26 months over a protest on the M25 in November 2022. But the seat has stayed in Green Party control after Mr Ellison’s election. The full result from the Frome West by-election for Somerset Council was: Dominic Ellison (Green Party): 663 – elected Drew Gardner (Liberal Democrats): 544 Joseph Williams (Reform UK): 218

Christopher Wildridge (Labour Party): 89 David Quantrill-Simon (Conservative Party): 87 The turnout was 21.68% and four ballot papers were rejected. The new councillor said: "I’m absolutely thrilled that the people of Frome West have put their trust in me, and I’m very conscious that being elected means the real work starts now. "I stood because I think Somerset can do things differently: we can build a social care system that supports people to live independently, with real choice and control, rather than waiting until people reach crisis; we can take flooding and river pollution seriously; improve public transport and reduce the pressure of traffic on our communities; and make sure that when new homes are built, the schools, health services, transport and other infrastructure people need come with them."

Drizzle doesn't dampen festival spirits!

T

HOUSANDS of revellers enjoyed a day of live music, entertainment and community celebration at the 2026 Minehead Bay Festival. The event, on August 29, was the fifth to be held on the West Somerset coastal spot, with visitors enjoying sunshine and showers for a full-on British weather experience. Running from noon to 6pm, the festival featured two live music stages, with performances on the Main Stage from Dakka Skanks, Alcohol Licks, Nothing Concrete, Nick Parker, Sebastian Tesouro, and St Fian, while on the Busk Station Stage, musicians of all ages and genres brought the energy. This year, organisers introduced a community yarn-bombing installation at Circus Green, created in collaboration with Minehead Women’s Institute and more than 100 residents.

Elsewhere on the seafront, the festival came alive with the rhythms of Minehead Samba, sea shanty performances, and circus acts, while street artists painted murals live and visitors took part in art workshops in the East Quay tent. Down on the beach, a dedicated nature area gave festival-goers the chance to unwind and get creative, with seashore treasure hunts and beach art workshops, while those looking to slow the pace down were able to relax in the Wellbeing Tent. Traders from near and far took part throughout the day, offering food, drink and arts and crafts. Organisers thanked main festival sponsors, Minehead Town Council and Hollam Solicitors, for “their generous support”, with funding also coming from the National Lottery Community Fund. Zara Aitken, event manager and charity operations manager at Minehead and Coast Development Trust, said: “This year marked the fifth

Minehead Bay Festival, and it’s amazing to see how it’s grown into such a firm favourite in the Somerset calendar. “Right from the outset, our goal has always been the same: to bring people together, celebrate our incredible community, and give everyone a free day out. “None of it would be possible without the incredible

support of local performers, volunteers, and businesses. We’re thrilled to have celebrated this milestone with the whole community.” The Minehead Bay Festival is organised by the Minehead and Coast Development Trust (MCDT) as part of its work to support community events and engagement across West Somerset.

New owners at Glastonbury bookshop LANDMARK Glastonbury bookshop – Labyrinth Books – has been saved from closure after it was put up for sale. The business, in the High Street, has been purchased by James and Sally North of Holythorn Press. It comes after last month, former owner Keridwyn Hershberger announced the business was for sale as they were “unable to fulfil the role of owner in the way the shop deserves”. “After many months of hope, planning, and working

through the complexities of international immigration and visa requirements, it has become clear that I am unable to fulfil the role of owner in the way the shop deserves,” they said. Now, a Holythorn Press spokesperson has confirmed the purchase was effective from September 1 and said the new owners “are very pleased”. “As many of you know, Labyrinth is an integral part of the thriving High Street and is a Glastonbury icon,”

they said. “We won’t be making big changes to the shop as it’s just fine the way it is. "But we are very open to suggestions for books and subjects to stock, and we are actively buying books, particularly rare or antiquarian esoteric books, and books on Glastonbury and her mysteries. “We will be working in the shop and very much look forward to seeing friends old and new at the centre of the Labyrinth.”

Footpath closed off

W

ORK to repair flood defences in Frome is underway to prevent possible collapse due to erosion. The scheme to update the defences at Welshmill, pictured above, commissioned by the Environment Agency (EA) and carried out by AMCOGiffen, was due to begin on August 17 but was delayed until September 1 and is expected to take around six weeks As a result, footpaths have been diverted, with new routes in place for walkers and cyclists. Civil engineer Jennifer Townsend, of the EA, said: “The Welshmill riverbank protection wall, known as a revetment, was built in 1971 as part of flood defence improvements following severe flooding in 1968. “The structure helps protect the riverbank from erosion and plays an important role in reducing flood risk in the local area. “Over time, the revetment has been damaged by river flows and natural ageing. Parts of the stone surface have cracked and some material has been washed away. This has caused sections of the structure to become unstable. “Our contractor will work hard to keep disruption to a minimum; we ask for the community’s patience and understanding as we complete this vital work.” If left unrepaired, further erosion could lead to more of the riverbank collapsing and may affect the nearby public

footpath, she warned. Repairs to flood defences at Welshmill in Frome will include: repairing damaged stone pitching on the riverbank installing permanent support piles at the base of the revetment stabilising areas affected by erosion Diversions in place on footpaths during the work in Frome. Picture: FTC Diversions in place on footpaths during the work in Frome. Picture: FTC Footpath diversions during flood defence repairs in Welshmill, Frome: Frome Town Council (FTC) said the riverside footpath will be diverted through the nearby play area during construction. Cyclists should continue along Welshmill Lane, onto Welshmill Road before rejoining the riverside path 100m upstream. Construction vehicles may be operating close to the diversion route, but all vehicle movements will be supervised. There will also be increased construction activity around Welshmill Lane. Traffic lights will be used on the bridge, with one lane closed while works are taking place. Small scale piling work will be needed for a small number of days which may create additional noise, but will take place during normal working hours. New PM pledges fresh look at Musgrove

N

EW Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to look at the timing of a new maternity and paediatric unit at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. Amid claims of mould and fast-degrading conditions, replacement units have long been called for a Musgrove, and the project was included in the government’s funding programme – but work isn’t scheduled to start until 2033. However on Tuesday (September 1), during his first appearance in the Commons as PM, Mr Burnham was challenged on the issue by Gideon Amos, the Lib Dem MP for Taunton and Wellington. The question came as nearly 3,000 people have signed a petition launched by Mr Amos for the scheme to be brought forward. He told the Prime Minister:

PM Andy Burnham answered Gideon Amos in the Commons Pictures: UK Parliament

“Over the summer, the National Maternity Review confirmed what we all feared in Taunton, which is that Musgrove Park Hospital’s maternity unit is the most challenging estate in the country. “It cannot be right that mums are giving birth in 30-degree heat and staff are fainting when they’re looking after them. “If that’s the most

challenging estate in the country, they cannot wait until 2033. “Will the Prime Minister please look at moving forward the new maternity unit at Musgrove Park as an urgent priority?” The Prime Minister replied by telling of his personal experience at Musgrove Park, back when he was a minister at

the Department of Health, stretching between 2006 and 2007, and from 2009 to 2010. "I remember well visiting in my Health Minister days,” he said. “I did some work shadowing at the hospital, so I know how much in need it is of renovation. I will look into the issue. “I think across the NHS this summer, staff have been working in unbearable conditions, same for patients as well. “I know the Health Secretary has this high on her agenda, and I will come back to the Honourable Gentleman when I’ve had a chance to look at the latest status of that issue.” Mr Amos has also written to new Health Secretary, Yvette Cooper, asking for an urgent meeting to discuss the scheme and inviting her to visit the Taunton site.

New surgical centre could cut waiting times

A

NEW surgical centre has opened at a Somerset hospital – aiming to cut waiting times and improve treatment for patients. The King’s Building has opened at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, bringing together operating theatres, endoscopy services, theatre admissions and a new intensive care unit under one roof. NHS bosses said the “stateof-the-art facility has been designed around the needs of our patients and the teams who care for them” and was built by contractor, Kier. “With eight operating theatres, six endoscopy rooms and a 22-bed intensive care unit, the King’s Building provides the space, technology and environment needed to deliver the very best care,” an NHS Somerset spokesperson added. Health Minister, Alison McGovern, said: “The opening of the King’s Building is a major milestone for Musgrove Park Hospital. By bringing

operating theatres, endoscopy services and intensive care together in one purpose-built centre, we can increase capacity, improve patients’ experience and help more people get the treatment they need sooner. “This major investment will give clinical teams the modern buildings, equipment and technology they need to deliver better care for patients now and in the future.” Martin Wilkinson, chief operating officer for NHS England South West, said: “Surgical hubs are making a real difference as coverage increases in the south west, so it’s excellent to see this latest unit come on stream. “Having state-of-the-art buildings can transform the experience of surgery for staff and patients alike, as well as helping bring down waiting lists.” David Shannon, director of strategy and digital development at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The opening of our

new surgical centre is a hugely important milestone for patients, colleagues and healthcare services across Somerset. “This is a modern, purposebuilt facility that has been designed around the needs of our patients and the teams who care for them. “It gives us additional capacity, creates a far better experience for patients, and provides an environment that supports the very best care." One of the most significant developments within the new centre is the introduction of dedicated hybrid operating theatres, bringing advanced imaging technology and surgery together in a single location. Miss Natasha Chinai, a consultant vascular surgeon at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Over recent years vascular surgery has continued

to evolve, with many procedures now using minimally invasive techniques supported by advanced imaging technology. “Until now, patients requiring both endovascular treatment and open surgery often needed to have different parts of their care delivered in separate locations. The new hybrid theatre allows us to bring those elements together and provide their full procedure under one anaesthetic. “It means we can offer truly integrated hybrid interventions in the right setting for our patients. This will help reduce the length of time people spend in hospital, reduce the need for additional admissions and provide a much more seamless experience."

Dental advice: Why visiting the hygienist is important... WHY visiting the hygienist is more important than you think… Experts from Somerset dentist David Neal with their latest advice to those contemplating their next visit… Prevention Pays: Why visiting the hygienist is worth your time There’s an appointment most of us put off – not because it’s unpleasant, but because it’s easy to assume it can wait. We asked Dr Eial Makori, Clinical Director at David Neal Dental in Langport, why visiting the hygienist matters more than people realise. What does a hygienist do? It’s not just a polish. Hygienists remove plaque and tartar a toothbrush can’t reach, check your gums properly, and catch problems early – before

they become a filling, or worse, a root canal. Catching gum disease early and improving cleaning habits to prevent decay early can save a lot of pain, time and money down the line. Are hygienists qualified clinicians? Yes. Just like dentists, they complete a degree-level qualification, sitting clinical exams, and registering with the General Dental Council. How does a hygiene visit compare to at-home dental care? At David Neal we use the latest techniques and equipment, for instance the EMS air polisher. This allows guided biofilm removal, a technique that’s very comfortable for our patients. We use an ultrasonic scaler to break up tartar with vibration and warm water (as we do with

all our water instruments), including below the gumline were a toothbrush can’t reach. Hand instruments get into finer areas, and we often finish with an air-polishing tool, which lifts staining and leaves teeth genuinely smooth. That’s something brushing alone can’t replicate. How often should I visit the hygienist? It depends upon individual needs, but we usually recommend every three to six months. Smokers, diabetics, or

those with a history of gum disease may need more frequent visits. What if I’ve been avoiding the dentist? At David Neal Dental, we regularly help people who’ve stayed away for years, often out of anxiety or embarrassment. We take a gentle, unhurried approach, and nobody will judge you. Whether you’re maintaining a healthy mouth and smile or taking the first step to getting your oral health back on track, your hygienist is there to help. n David Neal Dental Langport is located at 81 Bow Street, Langport, TA10 9PR. Call 01458 253 888 or visit Langport@davidnealdental. co.uk to book your hygiene appointment.

'Don’t pass over the wonky carrot'

T

HIS summer’s extreme weather has brought home just how vulnerable our food system is to a changing climate. Across the country, farmers and growers have been battling prolonged heat and drought, and crops are showing the strain. Cauliflowers are turning yellow, cucumbers are growing in unusual shapes and potatoes are developing knobbly skins. The produce itself is not the problem. It remains perfectly safe, nutritious and good to eat. Yet it’s being rejected because it does not meet the strict cosmetic standards set by the retailers. One surplus food redistributor I spoke to recently told me they received 6,000 rejected cauliflower heads in a single week. Meanwhile, UK growers have reported retailers turning to imported produce to fill shortages rather than accepting British fruit and vegetables that might look a little different.

by Sarah Dyke Lib Dem MP for Glastonbury & Somerton

That is simply not good enough. Here in Somerset, we know the enormous amount of effort that goes into producing our food. Farmers are already facing soaring costs and increasingly unpredictable weather. They should not then be penalised because a cucumber is not quite straight or a cauliflower is not perfectly white. That is why I have written to the Government calling for urgent action to stop perfectly good British food going to waste. I want Ministers to work with supermarkets and retailers to introduce greater flexibility around cosmetic specifications during periods of extreme weather. I am also calling for stronger protections for farmers against

unfair trading practices, so that growers are not left carrying all the risk when conditions beyond their control affect a crop's appearance. But this is about much more than wonky vegetables. We need to look at the resilience of our whole food system. Food security is national security. If we want British farmers to continue putting food on our tables, we need to give them the tools to adapt to a changing climate. That includes investing in agricultural water infrastructure so farms can capture and store more water during our wet winters and use it through increasingly dry summers. It is also why I have been pushing forward my Good Food Bill, which would put our long-term food security at the

heart of Government decisionmaking and ensure farmers have the support they need to keep producing food here in Britain. We can all play our part too. Next time you're grocery shopping, don't pass over the wonky carrot, the yellow cauliflower or the misshapen cucumber, put it in your basket instead. It tastes exactly the same, and choosing it sends a message to retailers that consumers care more about substance and nutritional value than shape. I would much rather see nutritious British produce on our plates than it being left to rot in a field simply because it is not cosmetically perfect. n As always, I want to hear from you. If you would like to share your views, have an issue I can help with, or wish to register your interest to attend one of my regular advice surgeries, please don’t hesitate to contact me on sarah.dyke. mp@parliament.uk.

Teamwork makes an MP's dream work

W

ORK as a parliamentarian is never a solo effort. Behind every campaign sits a wider team. Paid staff, of course, but also volunteers, constituents and people who simply care enough to get involved. Dr Ueli Zellweger, a friend and constituent of Swiss extraction who lives in the lovely village of Winsford, is a retired veterinary surgeon. He has spent some of his time exposing the scale of flea treatment chemicals leaching into our waterways. He has not done this alone. Stanley Johnson, father of Boris, and Sir Andrew Burns have worked with him. Marshalling the evidence between them, they have equipped me with the facts I

by Rachel Gilmour Lib Dem MP for Minehead & Tiverton

need to make the case in Westminster and turned a niche concern into one central government cannot ignore. That is what teamwork looks like when it works. My work with Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's cabinet member for transport, has also been a genuine partnership, built on a shared read of the evidence and what local people need. Most people in public life, whatever their party, want the same outcome: to do right by the community they serve. The same principle held this year on Bluetongue.

Conversations with vets and farmers across the constituency put me ahead of the curve. That groundwork let me brief Defra before other MPs had raised the issue, and to bring it to Alistair Carmichael MP, a friend, colleague and chair of the EFRA Committee. Alistair took it straight to Defra and into the media rounds. We are two MPs on opposite ends of the country with the same objective and a faster, louder case made. It is a hackneyed line, but hackneyed because it is true: teamwork makes the dream

work. Its quieter cousin holds just as well: a problem shared is a problem halved. Both point to the same lesson. The work I do in Westminster and in the constituency only counts for something when it is shared, with constituents willing to do the legwork, with colleagues willing to make common cause, and with councils willing to pull in the same direction. Where that happens, results follow. Where personal or political considerations get in the way of the common good, everyone loses. That, more than anything, is the case for teamwork. Not as a platitude, but as the only method that actually works and offers a hopeful future for Tiverton and Minehead.

The Epic campus is one of the region's largest construction projects

B

USINESS in North Somerset are being urged to register their interest in contracts for one of the region’s largest construction projects. A range of upcoming contract opportunities linked to the landmark Epic Campus development, in Long Ashton, have been unveiled. The project, being delivered by Gilbert-Ash, is set to create “significant opportunities for local suppliers over the coming months and years”, North Somerset Council said. Now, a number of work packages are being brought to market through Somerset Chamber of Commerce’s Somerset Supply Chain, with opportunities spanning construction, fit-out, engineering and specialist trades. Current and forthcoming opportunities as part of the Epic Campus project include: n Scaffolding (£500,000) n Brickwork (£700,000 to £800,000) n Drylining (£2 million) n Electrical Contractor LV (£1 million to £3 million) n Pipework & Ventilation (£2 million to £5 million)

n Soft Flooring n Painting & Decorating n Doors & Joinery n Fitted Furniture n Tiling n Signage n Builders’ Merchants and Material Supply Several packages are expected to progress throughout 2026 and 2027, with more opportunities anticipated as the development progresses. Somerset Chamber of Commerce has been appointed by North Somerset Council to deliver phase 1 of a business engagement and supply chain support programme related to the Epic Campus project. The council has already secured a Section 106 (S106) agreement with Epic Systems Corporation to fund a five-year programme that will maximise local economic benefits from the development, supporting business growth, skills development and employment opportunities for residents. The chamber is now urging businesses across North Somerset, particularly those operating in the construction sector, to register on the Somerset Supply Chain portal via www.somersetsupplychain.

Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member for sustainable places, said: “Thanks to Section 106 funding negotiated between North Somerset Council and Epic Systems Corporation, we’re pleased to welcome initiatives that help maximise the economic impact of this development and create long-term opportunities for local firms. “These contract opportunities give North Somerset’s construction sector a real chance to be part of one of the region’s most significant developments, supporting local jobs, skills and supply chains while delivering lasting benefits for communities across North Somerset.” David Crew, managing director of Somerset Chamber of Commerce, said: “We’re keen to hear from North Somerset businesses that want to be part of this transformational project. These opportunities cover a broad

range of trades and services, from specialist contractors through to suppliers and merchants. “By registering on the Somerset Supply Chain portal, businesses can make sure they are visible to contractors and are among the first to hear about opportunities as they become available.” And Sam Orchard, supply chain engagement lead at the chamber, added: “Our priority is ensuring that local firms are given every opportunity to compete for work on the Epic Campus project. “We know there is considerable expertise within North Somerset’s construction sector, and we want businesses of all sizes, from sole traders and microbusinesses to established contractors, to engage with us now. “Registering on the portal is free and will help us understand local capability, connect businesses with upcoming opportunities and provide support where needed.” n For more information, contact Sam by email to supplychain@somersetchamber.co.uk.

Ronnie Scott's to jazz up Yeovil

T

HE legendary performance space of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club is coming to Somerset. Direct from the heart of London’s Soho, the venue has upped sticks and is heading to Yeovil’s Westlands Entertainment Centre on November 11. Led by the club’s artistic director alongside his Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, the show promises to take audiences behind the scenes of one of the world’s most celebrated music venues, with a unique combination of world-class live jazz, storytelling, rare archive photography, and video footage. “Set amid the dive bars and jook-joints of old Soho, the concert traces the club’s remarkable journey from the hand-to-mouth finances and frequent police raids of its early

33

years through to its place at the heart of the international jazz-scene,” a spokesperson said. “Life at Ronnie’s is vividly reimagined through music, as well as stories of the extraordinary characters who passed through its doors: pop stars and film stars, politicians, and royalty – but, above all, the musicians who made the club what it is.” The show features classic music from the jazz greats who have graced the Ronnie Scott’s stage, woven together with tales of old Soho, wayward musicians, gangsters, police raids and the personalities behind the legend." Volkswagen ID.Cross: The compact electric SUV that thinks it's a big deal

E

VERY now and again, a car comes along that makes you stop mid scroll, raise an eyebrow, and think to yourself, “Oh, that’s actually quite interesting”. It doesn’t have to be fast, or flashy, or capable of outrunning a Lamborghini in a straight line. Sometimes it just has to look like it’s been designed by people who actually understand what the rest of us need from a car. That’s the impression oozing from every inch of the recently revealed Volkswagen ID Cross, the brand’s newest compact electric SUV. The small SUV market is already packed tighter than the M5 on a bank holiday Friday, but the ID Cross feels like VW has remembered how to make something simple, sensible, and genuinely appealing. It’s compact, measuring just over 4.1 metres long, but it carries itself with the confidence of a bigger car. There’s a friendliness to the design, a sort of “don’t worry, I’ve got this” vibe that makes it feel more approachable than some of the more aggressive looking electric SUVs out there. Volkswagen calls the styling Pure Positive design, which sounds like something you’d find on a mindfulness app, but in fairness it does give the ID Cross a clean, modern look. Specify the IQ Light LED matrix headlights and 3D LED rear lights, and it can take on a more premium feel too. Not shouty or gimmicky, just a bit more grown up. Even the illuminated VW logos somehow avoid looking tacky, and for a car that sits at the more affordable end of the EV

spectrum, it’s impressive how much presence it has. It’s the sort of thing you could imagine seeing outside a trendy café or parked neatly on a suburban driveway without looking out of place in either setting. Inside, it’s clear Volkswagen has been paying attention to what people actually want. The cabin is filled with fabric-covered surfaces and tactile materials that make it a comfortable and pleasant place to sit. The layout is simple, the controls are intuitive, and the 12.9-inch infotainment display sits neatly alongside the Digital Cockpit Pro without dominating the entire dashboard. There’s even a retro instrument mode that turns the digital cluster into a Mk1 Golf style layout — a little wink from Volkswagen that reminds you they’ve been doing this car building thing for quite a while. It’s also the sort of cool feature that will make passengers lean forward and pay attention, which is always a nice bonus. Volkswagen has also packed the ID Cross with technology normally reserved for higherend models. Connected Travel Assist is available, offering adaptive assistance that can respond to traffic lights and adjust speed accordingly. One Pedal Driving is included, allowing the car to slow itself smoothly using only the accelerator pedal. Parking tech has taken a step forward too, with features such as Area View and Park Assist Pro, the latter capable of performing fully automatic manoeuvres and even remote parking via smartphone where available.

Practicality is an equally strong point. The ID Cross offers seating for five and a 475 litre boot, which is 20 litres more than the petrol T Cross. There’s also a 25 litre frunk, which is perfect for storing charging cables or anything else you don’t want to hear rolling around in the back. It’s not huge, but it’s one of those small conveniences that makes everyday life just a bit easier. And in a compact SUV, every litre counts, especially when you’re trying to fit in shopping, sports kit, and whatever random object your kids insist on bringing along for the ride. Underneath, the ID Cross uses the latest evolution of Volkswagen’s MEB platform, known as MEB+. It introduces a new electric motor available in three outputs: 85kW, 99kW, and 155kW — or in old money, roughly 114bhp, 133bhp, and 208bhp. Two battery sizes will also be offered, 37kWh and 52kWh, with the larger pack delivering a reported range of about 265 miles. Charging performance is competitive too. The smaller battery can charge from 10% to 80% in around 23 minutes at up to 90kW, while the larger pack supports 105kW and completes the same charge in around 24 minutes. That’s quick enough to make motorway stops feel less like a forced lunch break and more like a brief stretch of the legs, or to easily grab a full charge on the average weekly shopping trip. Crucially, it means the ID Cross should be easy to live with even if you don’t have access to a driveway

or home charger. Trim levels for the new ID Cross will follow the usual Volkswagen structure. The Trend model serves as the entry point, offering generous standard equipment including DC fast charging. The Life trim adds larger alloys, dual zone climate control and a rear view camera, while the Style trim introduces premium lighting, heated seats, personalised interior elements and keyless entry. Optional extras include a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic roof and even pneumatic massage seats, which is not something you normally associate with compact SUVs. The most striking thing about the new ID Cross though, is how normal it feels — and I mean that in the best possible way. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel or dazzle you with futuristic gimmicks. It’s just a well-designed, well-equipped, sensibly-sized electric SUV that looks like it will slot into everyday life without any drama. And in a market where everything seems to be getting bigger, heavier, and more complicated, that feels like a breath of fresh air. Volkswagen will be announcing exact UK pricing and specifications soon but based on what we’ve seen so far in the German market, the ID Cross looks set to land in the £25k to 30k bracket, which should quickly confirm it as one of the most popular electric SUVs of the year. It’s practical, comfortable, thoughtfully designed, and packed with enough tech to make life easier without overwhelming you. If you’re keeping an eye on the growing crowd of compact electric SUVs, this is one worth watching — preferably before the first allocation disappears.

Family farm plans big festival comeback!

A

FAMILY farm that has endured months of being 'cut off' due to a series of roadworks and closures is fighting back - with a "unique music and food festival". The Mump, on the A361 at Burrowbridge, is planning a Mump Fest on September 19, featuring a host of acts including Moulin Bouge Circus Cabaret, Animal Krackers and Ethan King, alongside bars, food, a wellness area, crafts and stalls. It comes after a spokesperson said the farm, which is known for its famous veg boxes delivered to homes across the area, as well as a well-stocked farm shop, endured a "brutal year" which has seen severe flooding and a number of road closures which have left it cut off from trade. "It has been an incredibly tough year," a spokesperson said. "Between the floods at the

The Mump sits on the A361, at the foot of Burrow Mump

start of the year and being trapped right in the middle of the 10-week roadworks closure, our everyday passing trade was completely wiped out. The

'Road Closed' signs made it look like nothing was here." Now, the farm is fighting back, turning the quiet fields into a vibrant hub of activity. Organisers are putting sustainability at the heart of the event, showcasing how forwardthinking regenerative agriculture can restore soil health and boost ecosystems,

while proving that local businesses can remain resilient in the face of major transport disruptions. "We wanted to create an event that fights back against that isolation," they went on. "This festival is our way of showing the community we are still here, still farming - against that isolation - still farming sustainably, and still ready to serve incredible local food. "We hope people will navigate the diversions to support a local independent farm that has been pushed to the brink by these closures." In addition to a "lively line-up of live music", the festival aims to shine a spotlight on independent regional food vendors, including food stalls such as freshly fired artisan wood-fired pizzas and premium Somerset BBQ, all sourcing ingredients locally to champion the field-to-fork movement.

How the new development in Keynsham could look

Picture: Persimmon Homes Severn Valley

Approval for new 200-home development

P

LANS for up to 200 new homes in a Somerset town have been approved. Bath & North East Somerset (BANES) Council has given the green light to an application by Persimmon Homes Severn Valley to develop the properties at Keynsham. The development, on land west of Charlton Road, will be made up of two, three, and four-bed properties, with 45% of the homes dedicated to housing association provision, which the firm said was aimed at tackling the housing waiting list in the district, which currently stands at 5,700 households. All homes on the site will be zero carbon-ready, the

developer said, making use of renewable technologies in the form of air source heat pumps and solar panels, as well as being equipped with electric vehicle charging points, and have car and cycle parking. A playground, recreational facilities, a commercial unit, open space, and green infrastructure including allotments, grasslands, and an orchard will also be part of the scheme. A treeline buffer to help preserve the bordering conservation area, a minimum of 10% biodiversity net gain off-site, and on-site sustainable drainage is also included in the plans, while vehicle, pedestrian, and cycle access will come from

Charlton Road. Approval for the application also means more than £1 million will be handed over in financial contributions from Persimmon once comprehensive planning permission is given. Persimmon will now need to bring forward a detailed reserved matters application to BANES Council before the vast majority of construction work can commence. Persimmon Homes Severn Valley managing director, Claire Burton, said: "I am grateful to BANES Council’s planning committee for recognising the merits of our scheme in Keynsham and awarding us outline consent, establishing the principle of development here.

"This is a very exciting and ambitious scheme that delivers several times over for the local community, through a substantial of proportion of properties reserved for tackling housing need in the town, extensive green infrastructure, and multiple amenities, all in addition to further financial contributions from Persimmon for local services. "We look forward to progressing our plans to the next stage and will continue to work closely with BANES Council, the local community, and its representatives as we develop our reserved matters application and aim to leave a positive and lasting legacy in Keynsham."
