Villagers are baring all for charity calendar!
A
GROUP of Somerset villagers have bared almost all - to raise money for a good cause. Curtains are twitching in the village of Isle Abbotts as a new calendar is issued - featuring residents who stripped "breasts and bits" in aid of Cancer Research UK. The effort comes during the 25th anniversary of the original Calendar Girls film. "All of us have been affected by cancer in our everyday lives," said Bella Lagnado, chair of the Isle Abbotts Village Hall committee. "At the time we took the photos, there were two bereavements – one a young husband and father. We just wanted to do something to lighten the burden, inject some humour into everyday life and raise some cash for such a brilliant cause." The ladies – all residents of
the village – have been surreptitiously dashing in and out of each other’s houses, lowering straps, snapping away and creating a "fantastic supportive spirit of solidarity among sadness, illness and death". "We are really hopeful that our calendar will cheer up local residents, raise spirits (and
maybe the odd eyebrow) and bring in a good lump of money," Bella said. "As we live in a Duchy of Cornwall village, we will be sending one to the King, who has visited our village on many occasions, and the Prince and Princess of Wales, who have now taken over the Duchy of Cornwall titles.
"With their own experiences of fighting cancer, they will understand our motivation and the need to keep humour and positivity at the forefront or our lives." n Calendars, priced at £10, are available now. Email islebbbottsvillagehall@gmail. com for details.

Shepton fraudster conned widow out of £29,000
A
FRAUDSTER from Shepton mallet conned a woman out of £29,000 through his role helping her as a debt management adviser. Paul Johns, of Prestleigh Road, exploited a vulnerable widow who intended to use the money to clear debt after the unexpected death of her husband. The 61-year-old, who was self-employed as a debt management advisor, kept the funds for himself - and forged documents to reassure the victim her debts had been paid. At Taunton Crown Court on Monday, September 21, Johns was jailed for 30 months after previously pleading guilty to fraud by abuse of position. His offending came to light when the victim discovered a County Court Judgment (CCJ) had been registered against her as a result of unpaid debts. An investigation was then launched by the South West
Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU). Detective Inspector Dan Watts said: “The victim in this case was particularly vulnerable following the sudden death of her husband and was facing considerable financial pressures. “Johns exploited her trust, stealing money that had been provided to clear her debts and then attempting to conceal his actions through forged correspondence. “Given his previous conviction Paul Johns has been jailed for 30 months for fraud, I believe the sentence imposed by the court is emotional and psychological entirely appropriate. harm, with the effects often “Fraud is far from a lasting long after the offence victimless crime. Tribute to veteran, racer and fundraiser MAJOR Count Charles de Salis DL, of Yarlington House, near Wincanton, has died at the age of 96. Charles, who served in the Scots Guards throughout the 1950s, was born on January 25, 1930, and passed away on September 3. As well as serving his country, the major was a racing driver, antique collector and devoted much of his life to the restoration of the family’s Palazzo in the Swiss Bregaglia. After Downside School, Charles trained at the Guards Depot from April 1948, before going on to the Officer Cadet School at Eaton Hall. He joined the Scots Guards in 1949, age 18, for two years’ National Service but stayed in the British Army for 12 years. At 21, he led a platoon in Malaya to fight against communist insurgents.
Years later, one of his grateful platoon told his family this story: while fighting in the jungle, Charles had expertly lead his platoon away from an ambush and sure death, defying the ill-advised instructions sent over walkie-talkie from his commanding officers in Kuala Lumpur. Faced with such endangering commands, he avoided being court-martialled by replying, “Terribly sorry sir, can’t hear, signal’s breaking up”. In 1951, he was posted to the Second Battalion in Germany with the British Army on the Rhine, which led to him entering Continental motor races in the 1950s. In his favourite car – a silver Aston Martin DB2 – he won many rallies, most notably his class in the International Alpine Rally in 1956, the Tulip Rally in 1958, and the Monte Carlo rally
in 1959. Charles left the army in 1960 and moved to Somerset to farm. He became high sheriff and a deputy lieutenant of the county. He believed in public service, alongside caring for his prized Red Devons. He was governor of the Home Farm Trust; member of Sexey’s Hospital Management Committee; chair of the East Somerset Community Health Council; chair of finance and governor for King’s School Bruton and Bruton School for Girls; president of Somerset Sight. In the early 1980s, he chaired
the appeal to build the first hospice in Somerset. He raised £2 million, nearly £10 million today. In 1960, Charles married Carolyn Constable-Maxwell, first cousin of one of his racing co-drivers and fellow Scots Guards officer, Peter Bridgeman. An avid collector, he enjoyed memorabilia connected with one of his ancestors, Napoleon Bonaparte, which he used to illustrate lectures on the French leader. His house also rang to the chimes of many old clocks – and he may have had one of the largest collections in the UK of blue plastic Smurfs. He is survived by his wife, four daughters and 12 grandchildren. His funeral was at St Mary’s Church, Bruton, on Friday, September 18.

Brewhouse set to close at end of October
T
AUNTON’S Brewhouse Theatre will close at the end of October as a search for extra funding continues. Trustees of the Taunton Theatre Association Ltd, which runs the Coal Orchard venue, said while performances scheduled for October would go ahead, the landmark theatre would close at the end of the month if extra cash could not be found and extra savings made. “This financial pressure has arisen due to the prolonged period of challenging trading conditions we have all experienced this year and was exacerbated by the very hot summer weather which saw some shows cancelled and a decline in attendance,” said Val Hammond, chair of trustees at Taunton Theatre Association Ltd. “As a charity, our finances are always finely balanced and, regrettably, we do not have sufficient reserves to withstand these losses.” The news comes after the theatre landed grant funding of more than £500,000 from Arts Council England for improvements to the venue – but the money is only for capital works “and cannot be used for running costs”. “We value our ability to provide a safe and welcoming space for many in our community to enjoy entertainment and to meet and make friends,” Ms Hammond said. “For some we are a lifeline, and it will be devastating for the whole town to lose such an important cultural venue. “We appreciate this is a difficult situation for everyone involved: our wonderful team of staff and volunteers, shows and classes that bring so much joy to us all, and our loyal audiences and friends. “We thank too the businesses which sponsor us, individuals who give or raise monies for us,
An appeal has been launched to save the Brewhouse
and our key funder Taunton Town Council. “We are immensely grateful to all.” The Brewhouse has long relied on funding from the likes of Somerset Council and Taunton Town Council to survive. Somerset Council owns the Brewhouse freehold and a spokesperson called news of the potential closure “extremely sad”. “Somerset Council and Taunton Town Council have worked hard in recent years to try to ensure that the Brewhouse Theatre can continue to operate,” they said. “We recognise that these are challenging times and we are incredibly sorry to hear that this may not be possible. We know this would be hugely disappointing for Taunton and the wider community. “We recognise the important role that the arts plays in our towns and communities, unfortunately it is not something many local authorities have the financial resources to support, without significant external funding.” Taunton Theatre Association
Ltd was set up in 2013 by members of the community for the express purpose of ensuring the continued work of the venue. On Monday (September 28) the venue confirmed it would close - but launched it's own system for people to pledge donations as it hopes to re-open. Meanwhile, a seperate fundraiser has also been launched. Administered by the Wayfarers Pantomime Society and backed by the Taunton Association of Performing Arts, Taunton Thespians and the Somerset Opera Group, the effort has a target of £50,000. “This is more than a theatre, it’s at the heart of our community,” the appeal said. “For generations of families, performers, volunteers and local societies, the Brewhouse has been a place where memories are made, friendships begin and the magic of live theatre comes to life. “For The Wayfarers Pantomime Society, it has been our home since it opened in 1977. For nearly 50 years, we have brought our annual pantomime to its stage – and we

desperately want to keep that tradition alive. “Working together with the amateur theatre community including Taunton Association of Performing Arts (TAPA), Taunton Thespians and the Somerset Opera Group, who also regulary perform at the theatre, we’re setting an initial goal of £50,000 to contribute to the funds needed to help support The Brewhouse and secure its future. “But we need you. If The Brewhouse has ever made you laugh, cry, inspired you, entertained your children, given you a special memory or simply felt like a part of your life – please help us save it.” They said if the fundraiser was unsuccessful, funds would got to Taunton Arts and Culture in a bid to ensure it “continues to support the arts in our community”. n For more information on the appeal, and to donate, visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/ please-help-us-save-thebrewhouse-theatre-taunton5z336. Town's reminder to drivers - 20 is plenty
D
RIVERS in Langport are being reminded 20 is Plenty as they make their way through the town. Residents and traders have united for a new campaign to remind road users of the 20mph speed limit in place along Bow Street and Cheapside, and to urge drivers to “take a little more care”. From October 3 to 10, 20 is Plenty campaigners are inviting others to get involved, with posters appearing in windows and along the street as a friendly reminder to slow down. The idea is being led by Kim Woods of Langport Vintage Shop and Market, with the support of Langport Area Business Group (Langport Where It’s To). “Slower streets mean safer, stronger communities,” said Kim. “As a local business, we’re proud to be leading the 20 is Plenty campaign and
encouraging people to slow down and help make our streets safer for everyone who uses them.” Fellow Langport business owner, Peter Roberts, said: “We love our little town, with all its history and fab little shops and cafés. We’d love others to slow down when they visit and take it all in too.” The narrow Bow Street and Cheapside routes are ancient streets, with historic buildings, narrow pavements and plenty of people coming and going on foot. Campaigners said keeping speeds down to 20mph makes a real difference to how safe and comfortable the street feels for those using it. Sara Peterkin, who lives on Bow Street and is supporting the campaign, said: “Slower traffic along Bow Street will dramatically improve life in Langport, cars regularly whizz
past with wing mirrors brushing elbows and pedestrians jumping to safety.” The campaign is also backed by Langport Town Council, and deputy clerk, Morag Kelly, added: “We’re really pleased to support the ‘20 is Plenty’ campaign in Langport. Keeping speeds down makes our streets safer, friendlier and more enjoyable for everyone.” Langport Vintage Market will be getting involved too on
October 10, helping spread the message to people visiting and shopping in the town. Posters have been distributed in recent weeks, ready for the campaign to get underway on October 3. People can also collect a 20 is Plenty poster from Langport Library If you live or work in the Langport area and would like a poster, or want to get involved, email labginfo@gmail.com.
Padel court plan for estate near A303 PLANS for new indoor padel courts in a Somerset village have been submitted. Studio Scaramanga architects, on behalf of North Cadbury Court, have applied to Somerset Council to build two indoor courts, and associated offices and storage, as well as a car park, on a piece of farmland just off the A303. The facility would be built at Chapel Cross, bounded by the old A303 and Chapel Road. Accessible via footpath from the North Cadbury Court hotel, wedding and conference venue, the padel courts will be open to guests at the estate, as well as open to bookings from residents. “The site was chosen for its brilliant connection to the A303 and it is envisaged that, while guests at North Cadbury Court will have priority for booking slots, the courts will also be used by members of the public,”

New buyer selected for Saxonvale
Hugo Llewelyn, inset, CEO of Newcore Capital, has spoken out on plans for the Saxonvale site in Frome
I
NVESTMENT firm Newcore Capital has been approved as the buyer for the Saxonvale site in Frome. Somerset Council's Executive voted to move ahead with a sale of the 12-acre site in the centre of the town at a meeting on September 23, pictured above. The Newcore bid was picked from eight submitted to the council after the site was put up for sale following the collapse of an agreement with community initiative, Mayday Saxonvale. Alongside the financial offer of each party, the council said it weighed factors including proof of funds, transaction timescales, experience and track record when deciding on the preferred bidder. But Frome Town Council was among those to voice disappointment with the decision - including the sale being 'unconditional', meaning there are no caveats as to future use of the site, which Somerset Council is seeking for the Firepool site in Taunton. Newcore said it envisages plans including new homes, community space and car parking at the site, and vowed to meet with community groups and residents in the coming months. After the meeting, Councillor
Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s lead member for economic development, planning and assets, said: "This is an important milestone for the future of the site, and we are confident this will lead to a positive outcome for the town. "We absolutely understand the strength of feeling in Frome, and we recognise and respect the many years of work put in by so many local people with the aim of regenerating this site. "We share that ambition. Over recent years we have tried different approaches, including a community-led proposal, but none progressed into a deliverable solution. "In coming to today’s decision we have had to focus on financial robustness of the bids, certainty of funding, risk and our statutory duty to demonstrate best value. "Any future development proposals for the Saxonvale site will need to go through the planning process and this will include engagement with the local community and stakeholders. "We look forward to working closely with Frome Town Council, residents, businesses and Newcore to help unlock the site’s potential and enable the regeneration that the people of Frome have waited many years to see."
Pictures: Newcore Capital/Somerset Council
But leader and chair of Frome Town Council, Cllr Fiona Barrows, said the body "cannot say that we are not disappointed by this decision" and "remain deeply concerned about the process that has led to it". "As I set out at the meeting, those concerns include the limited transparency around the process, the extent to which the bidders’ actual proposals for Saxonvale have been considered, and the decision to proceed with an unconditional sale," she said. "Saxonvale is simply too important to Frome to be treated as an ordinary land disposal. It is our town’s last major brownfield site and represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen the town centre, create jobs and businesses, and shape the future of Frome." She added: "We have always said that Frome Town Council will work constructively with whoever ultimately acquires Saxonvale, and we will do so. But we will expect any developer to take seriously the needs and ambitions of our town alongside their own commercial interests, and to engage meaningfully with Frome Town Council, local residents, businesses and community organisations."
Mayday Saxonvale was initially selected as the preferred buyer for the site, with plans for a community-led development. However, when proof of funds for the development could not be provided, Somerset Council put the site back on the market. Hugo Llewelyn, chief executive officer of Newcore Capital, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as preferred bidder for Saxonvale. We recognise both the importance of this site to Frome and the strength of feeling within the town about its future. “As a B Corporation, our purpose is to invest responsibly for the long term, creating a positive impact for people and the planet. We deliver sustainable investment in social infrastructure and we see Saxonvale as a real opportunity to do this in partnership with the local community. “We want to understand what people value about Frome, what the town needs and how Saxonvale can become a thriving part of the town once again. “Our ambition is to re-stitch Saxonvale into Frome, celebrate its heritage, put nature and liveability at the heart of the proposals and create places and community assets that can be stewarded for the long term.”

ANALYSIS: Why couldn't Somerset Council do the same with Saxonvale sale as Firepool?
I
T MAY be around 40 miles away, but Firepool in Taunton was a constant theme of discussion surrounding the sale of the Saxonvale site in Frome last week. Firepool is a 17-acre piece of brownfield land on the edge of Taunton town centre. Formerly home to the town's livestock market, it has lain empty for years, with occasional development plans complete with fancy artist impressions of a stylish development appearing - then disappearing again. Just last month, Somerset Council - the owner of both Firepool and Saxonvale announced a "fresh way" to finally developing the Taunton site. It announced it would be seeking a "development partner" for Firepool, who would potential buy the site and work alongside the council to fully develop it. The key part of such a partnership, as the council said, would be a 'development agreement', ensuring the authority's vision for the site as a whole is followed. Councillor Mike Rigby, lead member for economic development, planning and assets, even vaunted a benefit of such an approach as being that it "allows the council to retain influence over the future of the site while benefiting from external expertise and investment". "Any preferred partner and any proposals for the site would return to Executive for consideration before any final decisions are made," he said. However, 40 miles down the road, lies Saxonvale - a 12-acre brownfield site on the outskirts of Frome town centre. It is almost the mirror image of Firepool in the east of Somerset, just a bit smaller. Everything the council said about the Taunton plot, you
Somerset Council has taken a very different approach to the Firepool site in Taunton
could say about Saxonvale. For example, Cllr Rigby called Firepool a "nationallysignificant brownfield regeneration opportunity": Tick. He also said "the council has already invested heavily in preparing the site": Tick. But last week, Somerset Council's Executive did not name a partner for a 'development agreement', did not seek to "retain influence over the future of the site", and did not ensure "any proposals for the site would return to Executive for consideration". No, Saxonvale is to be sold, with only planning rules as protection against whatever the developer wants to do. And in the current climate, that is hardly any protection at all. If it were, why didn't Somerset Council simply sell Firepool? We asked the council why it hadn't taken the same approach for the two sites. Here is what a spokesperson told us: "Saxonvale and Firepool are both important regeneration opportunities, but they have different histories, ownership arrangements, commercial circumstances and delivery challenges. There is no single model that is appropriate for
every site. "In the case of Saxonvale, the council and its predecessor authority have explored a number of routes over several years to secure regeneration of the site. These have included council-led proposals, consideration of different disposal options, a preferred purchaser process involving Acorn Property Group in 2024 and, subsequently, a unanimous Executive decision in January 2025 to sell the site to Mayday Saxonvale Development Ltd. A draft contract was issued and discussions continued for several months. However, the transaction did not complete because the necessary funding could not be demonstrated and no contracts were exchanged. The council therefore moved to an open market sale process in 2026, which attracted eight bids. Following assessment of those bids, Executive approved Newcore Capital as the preferred bidder. "Firepool is in a different position. Significant infrastructure and enabling works have already been delivered through Future High Streets Fund investment, creating a different set of opportunities and commercial

considerations for the site. The approach being taken at Firepool reflects those specific circumstances and the council's judgement about the most appropriate route to securing its regeneration. "The council has consistently taken the view that major regeneration sites should be considered on their individual merits rather than through a one-size-fits-all approach. "It is also worth noting that the decision taken this week relates to the sale of the Saxonvale site following a competitive marketing exercise. Any future development proposals for the site will need to be developed by the purchaser and will be subject to community engagement and the planning process." So, there you have it. Feel free to take your time and unpack that one. Elsewhere, however, we have been pondering what may have weighed heavy on councillors' minds when considering the Saxonvale site. It's no secret Somerset Council has financial issues. Throughout the discussion over the Saxonvale sale, we were told of the council's "obligations to secure best

News consideration for the disposal of the site, under Section 123 of the Local Government Act 1972". Now, without wishing to judge dear reader, anything with sections and subsections is not likely to be widely read, so we thought we'd have a look. In effect, Section 123 of the Local Government Act 1972 is meant to ensure authorities like Somerset Council don't flog things off too cheap, and to folks who won't actually do anything. While it means they have a duty to consider getting the best price for a site like Saxonvale, or Firepool, there is some wiggle room - and in fact, Somerset Council itself used that wiggle room last year when it agreed to sell the site to Mayday Saxonvale, who could probably have been outbid by a number of other potential developers. The point is, the council can choose to sell to a lower bidder, but it has to weigh up whether that shortfall is worth it. Will the project get delivered? Does it bring community benefits worth the financial loss? If you're Somerset Council, which was burned by Mayday and Acorn previously, a bidder like Newcore - which boasts eco and community credentials and does have a track record of delivering projects - could be the sensible pick. But don't be too overwhelmed by the Local Government Act talk. Somerset Council could sell to who it wanted, within reason, and if the difference wasn't more than £2 million, it wouldn't even need permission from the government. It chose not to - perhaps wisely so, given what has gone on in the past. Perhaps it doesn't want to tell us why, because Mayday is well supported and voters don't like councils saying they don't have faith in community efforts. Pure speculation on my part, of course, as we were not allowed in the deliberations, but I would say it's entirely sensible
somersetleveller.co.uk
The Saxonvale site in Frome has been controversial for years
for the council to be wary of Mayday's bid, given what happened last time. Even with that, however, it does not answer questions over why the council couldn't have pursued a Firepool-style 'development agreement' deal with someone like Newcore, or Mayday. However, I would vaunt there are around 25 million reasons why the council opted for a straight-forward sale. Back to the financial situation at County Hall... We all know Somerset Council doesn't have a lot of money swilling around. While prominent members claim the finances are on the road to recovery, heading in the right direction, blah blah, things remain very, very tight. I know no one wants to go back there, but remember the difficult task Somerset Council had to set a budget for the 2026/27 financial year? Well, if your mind has chosen to blank out that particular memory (and who could blame it?), the council was looking at a funding deficit of around £25m to provide services, collect bins, that sort of thing. So, it told the government this, which approved a Capitalisation Direction. It sounds complicated, but basically it meant Somerset Council was allowed to fill the
gap by borrowing money, or selling off assets. Yes, selling off assets. The Capitalisation Direction itself does not give the council money. It only allows them to raise money in ways not normally permitted - borrowing, and selling stuff off. It's like if you needed £1,000 to fix the car, but didn't have it, you could either borrow it, or sell something to raise the money. Firepool and Saxonvale could be sold off to raise at least some of that money, thus saving the council a lot of borrowing costs. Somerset Council, with Firepool and Saxonvale, has two valuable things it can sell to pay for that car repair, if you like. Firepool, I would speculate, is potentially more difficult a proposition as a cash cow, due to the almost £11m of government funding invested in it, and how that could impact a sale to a commercial entity without any council input. The government might well ask for it back... Saxonvale has no such strings, except for a mere £3.6m it might well have to pay back to Homes England (who gave a grant towards sorting the site for redevelopment), so minus that, any money from the sale could go straight towards plugging that £25m hole.
Picture: Somerset Council
So Saxonvale may have been the sacrificial lamb, in my view, to bring in money to get the council through the year. And that's not necessarily a dig at the council. It needs money to keep going, to fill those potholes, to provide SEND support, and take down those illegally-placed flags etc, so no one can in good faith attack it for trying to bring in money. However, looking through community-tinted glasses and longer term, it can be attacked for not losing some cash on Saxonvale and retaining some control, as it has with Firepool. Perhaps Taunton is more important, strategically, as a location? I don't know. And thankfully, I don't have to make such judgements - and council sources have assured me it isn't fair to directly compare Firepool and Saxonvale. I accept that - and I don't for a minute think the council makes decisions with malice. But I thought I would weigh up the two situations, as the public is doing, and attempt to present the facts - and speculate a bit on what might have come into the discussion as councillors made what was a very difficult decision, I'm sure. HE Mendip television and radio transmitter, which serves 720,000 households across Somerset and the south west, should remain on air until at least 2044, according to a new report. The 280.7-metre tall transmitter could be taken off air under little known proposals to turn off television delivered through an aerial in 2034. But the National Preparedness Commission says shutting down Freeview could leave the UK more vulnerable to cyber attacks, power cuts and major national emergencies. The report describes the UK's network of more than 1,450 television and radio transmission sites as critical infrastructure that can continue broadcasting when internetbased communications fail. It cites incidents including the ‘Iberian Peninsula blackout’, when much of Spain and Portugal lost power and internet capabilities, as evidence of the risks facing modern communications networks. Transmitters such as Mendip form part of a network reaching 98.5% of UK households, it
says, and should be kept on air until at least 2044. Mark Steele, chief operations officer at Arqiva, which operates the UK’s broadcast network, said: "The debate among government and broadcasters has focused too heavily on changing viewing habits and streaming services while overlooking the role transmitters such as Mendip play in national resilience – keeping the UK public safe and informed in the event of an emergency. "Retaining Freeview is not simply about preserving television services but maintaining a wider communications platform used to support emergency information, radio broadcasting and wider critical infrastructure, including emergency services communication and coastguard communications. "Removing digital terrestrial television too quickly would undermine the economics of the wider network and increase costs for other essential services. That leaves the UK vulnerable. "The key question is not simply how people will watch

television in the future, but what communications capabilities the country will need when internetbased systems are unavailable." Lord Toby Harris, chair of National Preparedness Commission, said: "The question for government is much more than how people will watch television in future, but how the country will communicate when internetbased systems fail. "The UK’s tall tower network is a sovereign, resilient asset that reaches almost every household and supports radio, emergency services and critical infrastructure.
"Protecting terrestrial broadcasting until at least 2044 would preserve a vital, independent route for trusted public information when it is needed most." Minister for creative industries and media told The Observer the government was "determined to make sure that nobody is left behind as TV moves towards an internetbased future, whether that’s in 2034 or 2044". "The government believes there is a compelling case to make this change in 2034, but we are asking now what the public think," he added.
Recycling centres moving to autumn and winter opening hours RECYCLING sites will start operating on their winter timetable tomorrow (October 1). Somerset Council runs 16 recycling sites across the county, with the venues moving to autumn and winter opening hours, opening from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and from 9am to 4pm at weekends. The autumn and winter timetable will be
in place until March 31 next year. Midweek opening days vary between sites, but all sites are open on at weekends. "Residents are advised to check their nearest recycling site online before travelling for its opening days, facilities and any vehicle or trailer permit requirements," a council spokesperson said. "The materials accepted vary by site, so
visitors should also check that their chosen site can take the items they plan to bring." Queue cameras are available at nine Somerset sites: Bridgwater (Saltlands), Chard, Highbridge, Minehead, Street, Taunton (Priorswood), Wellington (Poole), Wells (Dulcote) and Yeovil. n View the cameras at www.somerset. gov.uk/recycling-site-queue-cams.

Police worker misused computer system
A
FORMER Somersetbased police staff member who used the force system to carry out searches of people unrelated to her work – including herself – has been handed a suspended prison sentence. In August at Exeter Magistrates’ Court Laura Dean, who was based at Bridgwater Police Centre, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of computer misuse. And on September 16, the 33-year-old was sentenced at the same court to a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and 140 hours of unpaid work. The court heard Dean purposefully used a police computer system, Niche, to carry out searches on several individuals, including herself. None of the illegal searches Dean made were related to victims of crime she had contact with in a professional capacity.
Dean resigned from her role at Avon & Somerset Police in September last year. A separate misconduct process has been running alongside the criminal investigation and will continue following Dean’s conviction. After the hearing, Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Hayward, of the Avon & Somerset Police Professional Standards Department, said: “Laura Dean deliberately accessed sensitive personal data of people without a lawful policing purpose, knowing full well that she should not be Laura Dean searched for herself and others on the police system doing that. Advice for drivers as donation centre opens
A
HUGE new charity donation site and store has opened in Taunton this week. The Salvation Army property, at the former Rowcliffes site in East Reach, was due to open on Tuesday (September 29) – and donations have already filled the store in one department. Ahead of the opening, people were urged not to attempt to donate clothes to the charity shop, as storage was already full. However, some items are still being accepted in other departments. Meanwhile, ahead of the opening, anyone planning to visit the new shop was reminded to be considerate if arriving by car. “It’s a main route, it’s surrounded by schools and residential areas and also has time periods when it’s an urban clearway,” a store spokesperson

that much is clear from all your love, but we also need to consider those around us and how East Reach is actually many people’s s homes and routes to and from their daily plan,” the charity spokesperson added. “Please help us and show consideration for each other.”

Death after medical episode near garage in Glastonbury sees police IOPC referral
A
MAN died after being restrained by police following a “medical episode” near a Glastonbury petrol station. The incident, at the Morrisons garage off Street Road, was reported at just before 7.50am on Sunday morning (September 20). After being restrained by officers, it is understood the man became unresponsive and was taken to hospital by air ambulance, but sadly passed away. An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said: “We were called just before 7.50am on Sunday (September 20) to a supermarket petrol station, off Street Road, in Glastonbury, following reports of a man acting in a violent manner. “Officers arrived at the scene at around 8am and established the incident was a medical episode. “Some restraint was required for the man’s own safety and the safety of others and he was placed in the recovery position.
He then became unconscious and unresponsive, and officers began delivering CPR prior to ambulance arrival. "The man was taken to hospital in an air ambulance where he sadly later died. "His family are aware and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Officers continue to make regular contact with them and keep them updated." They said the force had referred the incident to police watchdog IOPC (the Independent Office for Police Conduct) due to their previous contact with the man, with an independent investigation now underway. “We are aware of some inaccurate speculation online regarding the nature of police involvement,” the spokesperson added. “We would like to reassure the public that no taser was deployed and the incident is captured on multiple officers’ body worn video and CCTV, which is being reviewed.”

What a load of boules - but all for charity!
A
BUSINESS boules tournament raised £3,500 for charity. Taunton-based developer Summerfield’s 15th annual charity boules tournament took place at Taunton Deane Cricket Club on September 10 and welcomed 40 teams and more than 155 guests. Funds raised through the event will support homelessness charity Arc through the Summerfield Force for Good Fund, a new charity partner for the next two years, as well as making a number of smaller grants to local charities and groups, managed by Somerset Community Foundation. Arc provides accommodation, outreach and personalised support to people affected by homelessness across Somerset, helping them move towards greater stability and independence. Contributions from participating businesses raised £2,803.67, with Summerfield rounding the total up to £3,500.
James Holyday, group managing director of Summerfield, said: “Our annual boules tournament is always a highlight in the Summerfield calendar, bringing together the local business community for some friendly competition while raising money for organisations making a real difference in Somerset. “We are delighted that this year’s event will support Arc and its vital work with people affected by homelessness. I would like to thank every business that joined us, donated and helped make the day such a success. “We are also pleased to introduce the additional charity draw this year, enabling another local cause to benefit from the generosity and community spirit behind the event.” Businesses attending were also invited to choose one of 10 local charities to be entered into a special draw for an additional £500 donation from Summerfield.
The Open Door Charity was selected to receive the donation by PKF Francis Clark, the winners of the draw. Fiona Foster, philanthropy manager at Somerset Community Foundation, said: “Summerfield’s annual charity boules tournament is a wonderful example of local businesses coming together to support their community. “We are delighted to work with Summerfield to ensure the generosity of everyone involved reaches local charities and groups, where it can make a
meaningful difference. “This year’s support for Arc will help the charity continue its vital work with people affected by homelessness across Somerset.” On the boules terrain, the cup competition was won by AC Mole, with Cooper Associates taking the runners-up place. PKF Francis Clark won the plate competition, ahead of the Summerfield team. The best-dressed team prize went to Amicus Law, while Albert Goodman received the Wooden Spoon.
Uptick in food recycling boosts numbers
R
ECYCLING and reuse are on the rise in Somerset, according to the latest figures. Somerset Council has published its annual recycling tracker, which it said showed “a bumper year for reuse” in the county. The data showed nearly 3,500 tonnes of materials being rescued from waste to be used again, an increase of 26% from 2,700 tonnes last year. Food waste recycling – which had previously been highlighted as an area the authority wanted to improve – also increased, with more than 23,000 tonnes collected and recycled in Somerset, an 8% increase (1,700 tonnes). At the same time, the amount of rubbish sent to an energy from waste facility dropped by
1,100 tonnes. The data was released during Recycle Week, a national campaign aiming to show people how they can recycle better, and why recycling matters. Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, lead member for communities, environment and climate change
at Somerset Council, said: “We’re committed to sharing what happens to the recycling that’s collected at the kerbside and at our recycling sites. Residents want to know what we do with the materials we collect, by publishing our tracker we show that recycling is worthwhile.
“Recycling is not only the right thing to do, because it means valuable materials can be used again, it also helps to provide an efficient service. “Recycling is sold on and the money made helps to pay for the service. Processing materials for recycling is also cheaper and greener than sending rubbish to energy from waste. “I want to thank everyone for sorting their recycling, and if you’re unsure if an item can be recycled, it’s always worth checking before throwing.” Figures also showed a 40% reduction in materials being sent to landfill, including rubble and hardcore, which is now being recycled. Overall, Somerset Council’s 2025/26 recycling rate was 55%, ranking in the top 10% of unitary authorities.

County leaders get update on battery factory build during visit
Council leaders at the Agratas site, near Bridgwater
C
OUNTY leaders got an update on progress at the new Agratas Gigafactory near Bridgwater during a recent tour. Leader of Somerset Council, Councillor Bill Revans, and chief executive Duncan Sharkey joined Agratas chair Mr N Chandrasekaran for a visit to the site, at the Gravity Smart Campus, at Puriton. It comes as work on the huge facility continues with Agratas, part of the Tata Group, making a multi-billion pound investment in the batterymanufacturing factory on the
Gravity site, which spans some 244,000 sqm. The project is expected to create thousands of high-skilled jobs and hopes to help establish Somerset as a centre for advanced manufacturing, innovation and clean energy technology. During the visit, the council leaders were able to see first-hand the scale of construction progress being made and hear about the next stages of the development. Cllr Revans said: “This is one of the most significant investments Somerset has ever
Picture: Somerset Council
attracted and it has the potential to transform opportunities for generations to come. Seeing the progress on site was hugely encouraging. “Our priority is to ensure local people and businesses benefit from this investment. By working with Agratas, University Centre Somerset College Group and our other partners, we want to develop the skills, training and apprenticeship pathways that will enable Somerset residents to secure jobs with Agratas and across the county’s growing advanced manufacturing sector.
“The benefits should reach well beyond the site itself. An investment of this scale has the potential to create significant opportunities for Somerset businesses through its supply chain, supporting wider economic growth across the county and the South West. “We are proud to be working with Agratas and our partners to ensure Somerset secures the maximum possible long-term benefit from this landmark project.” Council chief executive Mr Sharkey added: “Agratas is a fantastic example of Somerset attracting world-leading investment. Alongside the jobs and economic opportunities being created, the project is helping to build new skills pathways and strengthen the county’s long-term economic future. “The visit formed part of ongoing partnership working between Somerset Council, Agratas and other organisations supporting the delivery of the Gravity Smart Campus and its wider economic benefits for Somerset.”

Bridgwater proposes taking over car parks as it criticises plans to increase charges
P
LANS to introduce new tariffs at council-run car parks across Somerset have sparked opposition from one town council. Bridgwater Town Council (BTC) has formally opposed Somerset Council's plans to introduce new tariffs including Sunday parking charges. At a recent meeting, councillors expressed "significant concern about the potential impact the proposals could have on residents, visitors, local businesses and the wider town centre economy". BTC resolved to call on Somerset Council to review the proposed introduction of Sunday parking charges, reconsider planned tariff increases and explore the introduction of up to two hours of free parking in Bridgwater. Councillors also requested discussions on the possible devolution of Somerset Council-owned car parks to BTC. Cllr Mick Lerry, who proposed the motion, said: "Our town centre businesses continue to face significant challenges and we should be doing everything possible to encourage people to visit Bridgwater, not introducing measures that could deter them. "Free and affordable parking
plays an important role in supporting local trade, attracting visitors and maintaining a vibrant town centre." Cllr Diogo Rodrigues, who is also the Conservative leader at Somerset Council, seconded the motion and added: "This is not a party-political issue. Councillors from all parties recognised the concerns being raised by residents and businesses alike. "We believe Somerset Council should carefully reconsider these proposals and work with Bridgwater Town Council to develop parking arrangements that support economic growth and accessibility."

BTC highlighted concerns that the cumulative impact of higher parking costs could reduce footfall, negatively affect local businesses and make the town centre less attractive to shoppers, visitors and families. Bridgwater Town Council will now formally submit its objections to Somerset Council as part of the consultation process and has requested discussions regarding the future management of council-owned car parks within the town - as has happened with parks. The changes - unveiled in August - would see new tariffs issued according to a car park's specific 'rating'. A Somerset Council spokesperson said the Somerset Parking Review and Charging Principles Framework brings “a fair approach to parking fees in the county, ironing out disparities in practice between different towns, while supporting local businesses and residents”. The new tariffs could be introduced in December. Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for highways and
transport, said: “This is fundamentally about fairness and consistency across Somerset. “As a unitary authority we inherited a range of different practices in different towns. "It is only right that all our car parks are part of the same charging structure, where the same rules are applied to everyone. “Within the different tiers there is plenty of room to accommodate different types of car park and usage, to reflect the role of each car park in supporting the local economy, including free provision for some of the time, as well as lower tariffs in less premium and more rural areas. “Tariffs at the busier end of the spectrum in bigger centres are aimed at encouraging turnover and sustainable travel into Somerset’s towns. “We use parking fees and charges to support local economies, help minimise the adverse environmental impacts of traffic and support the operation of the parking service.”

A depiction of the Salvation Army being attacked by Skeleton Army activists from 1882
How Somerset helped form the legal right to protest - and why it is important...
W
HEN you think of the Salvation Army, what comes to mind? Sepia-tinged images of a lady in a smart uniform with a bicycle? Or the sound of a small but lovely-sounding brass band at your nearest shopping centre at Christmas time? Or is it of an invading force, determined to ruin the ‘British’ way of life? Well, surprising as that may sound, that was exactly the impression some wanted to create of the affectionatelyknown Sally Army in the early 1880s. Founded in East London in 1865 by William and Christine Booth, the organisation was originally known as the East London Christian Mission and aimed to provide ‘soup, soap, and salvation’ to people often ostracised from traditional churches and communities, including alcoholics, thieves, sex workers and the homeless. The mission provided meals, accommodation and spiritual
guidance to those in need, as William and Christine believed it was impossible to preach the gospel to someone who had nothing. And in Victorian England, finding souls to support was not difficult. Daily life for the poor – despite living in a country that boasted the wealthiest empire on Earth – was very, very hard. According to surveys from around the time William and Christine launched their effort, around 30% of Londoners lived in abject poverty. The wealth of the empire was very much concentrated at the top. As a result, there was no shortage of potential converts to the mission’s message, and it thrived. By 1878, the group was emerging as a powerful force for good, helping people across not only London, but further
afield. And they were a determined bunch, dedicated to their mission, which is how the name change came about. In 1878, it is believed William Booth was reviewing annual reports which described the East London Christian Mission as a ‘volunteer army’. Both William and his son, Bramwell, disliked the phrase, as it implied a casual relationship with the cause. So they renamed it, the Salvation Army, made up of dedicated ‘soldiers’ determined to fight for Christian salvation and against social injustice. A worthy effort, you might think. But some did not. Some were against the notion of an organisation preaching not the word of god, particularly, but the abstinence the army believed came with it.
Salvation Army groups began emerging across the country, spreading the word in towns, villages and cities. And so successful did it become providing soup, soap and salvation that pubs, brewers and bookies in particular started noticing a drop in profits after their arrival. Nowhere was this noticed more than across the south – and even in Somerset. Opposition – later found to be largely provoked and funded by those peddling booze and gambling services – emerged in the form of bands of angry young men who, you guessed it, liked a drink and a bet (or simply worked for a brewery or a bookie). Who did these Christians think they were, parading through towns with their trumpets, singing hymns and helping people? Soon, the opposition movement itself began to form an identity. Exactly where this opposition
The Somerset Leveller, September 30, 2026
History
somersetleveller.co.uk movement was founded is not quite clear, though it is understood the first properly organised and sizeable group was in Exeter, followed by another in Weston-super-Mare. These groups were formed to directly oppose the Salvation Army and everything it stood for. Their flag? A skull and crossbones, or a banner bearing the name of Satan, or a skeleton. As a result, these groups became known as the Skeleton Army. Their motto: Beef, beer, and bacca. All very witty and silly, you might think. But it wasn’t, not by any stretch. Salvation Army groups across the country found themselves under attack, quite literally. Here in Somerset, by 1881, the Salvation Army had established itself in Weston, holding open-air meetings and marches, complete with drums, banners and singing (think that Christmas ensemble but walking around the town). But as these parades and meetings continued, opposition to their actions and their sentiment grew. The town’s newly-established Skeleton Army started following the Salvation Army, with their own banner of a skull and crossbones, playing discordant music and disrupting meetings. In March 1882, things reached a tipping point, with Skeleton Army members attempting to take over the Salvation Army ‘barracks’ at York Street. Things turned violent, a window was smashed and instruments damaged. This continued, with the police trying unsuccessfully to move on the Skeleton Army on numerous occasions, with Salvation Army soldiers reportedly injured when things turned nasty, including people of the town reporting they “feared for life, property and the peace of the town”. Reports from the time detailed how the Skeleton Army would start “a free fight, great uproar, blows, tumult, stone throwing and disorder” to disrupt and frighten the Salvation Army
39
The Skeleton Army published leaflets outlining their intentions to oppose the Salvation Army
‘soldiers’. The streets of Weston had become a battleground, with evidence of ‘riotous mobs’ gathering to ‘prevent Salvation Army meetings’. Enter the law. You might expect the ‘riotous mobs’ would be the focus of some legal ire, but magistrates didn’t jail members of the Skeleton Army for attacking a religious group with peaceful intentions. They decided to ban public gatherings of any kind which were likely to disturb the peace – including the Salvation Army, who had not been accused of causing any confrontation and had in fact, seen volunteers suffer injury rather than retaliate, according to reports from the time. Yet in true defiant style, the Salvation Army refused to accept the court’s ruling, and continued to march through Weston regularly, parading their beliefs and holding their open-air meetings. Among them were Captain William Beatty, Thomas
Bowden and William Henry Mullins, and on March 29, 1882, the trio were ordered to provide sureties to keep the peace for 12 months when they appeared before the beak for breaching the ban. They declined, you’d imagine politely, and were promptly sent to prison for three months. The Salvation Army appealed, with the issue even being raised in the House of Commons. Lawyers argued at the High Court how the Salvation Army was being prevented from carrying out a lawful activity – parading and holding open-air meetings – due to the actions of another group, namely the Skeleton Army. In effect, the Salvation Army said their own – legal – actions were being banned due to fears over the potential illegal actions of others, which they said wasn’t fair. And the High Court agreed. Mr Justice Field said the Salvation Army was not committing violent acts, but the
Skeleton Army was. “There is no authority for such a proposition,” he said, ruling a lawful activity should not be stopped because someone threatens to respond to it unlawfully. The three Salvation Army members’ convictions were overturned. During the hearings, it was even claimed the Skeleton Army movement was founded in Weston-super-Mare in 1881, but the town is now largely considered to be among the first – and largest – Skeleton Armies. What’s clear is that the Salvation Army irritated people. Preaching abstinence was not always popular – particularly with landlords, brewers and gambling bosses. And the noise was annoying for some residents. But the violence of the Skeleton Army was also not popular with everyone. And the Salvation Army had its own supporters, of course. The High Court ruling – known as Beatty v Gillbanks – still stands as a landmark case, confirming the lawful actions of one should not be prohibited by the threat of unlawful actions by another. This is why Somerset stands at the centre of modern debate – even though many will not know it – over the right to protest. In a free country, whatever your cause, you are free to demonstrate it. And the potential unlawful behaviour of those who oppose you should not prevent you doing so. The Salvation Army is still in Weston. Still in Somerset. The Skeleton Army is not. So when you next see a demonstration you disagree with, remember the Salvation Army, and the Skeleton Army, and the importance of the right we all have to voice our opinions, so long as they are lawful. For we, the people of Somerset – where this right was so plainly established in law – we have a duty to do so, perhaps more than many.

Shortlist unveiled for new Clarks CEO (canine executive officer): How to vote!
T
HE shortlist of finalists for the role of Canine Executive Officer (CEO) at Clarks Village has been released – with the public now charged with selecting their perfect pooch for the role. The Street shopping outlet has compiled a list of 10 finalists from more than 300 dogs who struck a pose during the recent Pawsome Pooch event. Now, the public can vote for their favourite, with the winner being crowned CEO for the next year. The Pawsome Pooch event also featured free pooch pampering, dog trick and agility sessions, illustrated pet pawtraits, dog treat pick ‘n’ mix, charities Guide Dogs and Canine Concern, as well as the chance for pups to strut their stuff in style on the ‘dog walk’. A team of pedigree judges have had the ruff job of whittling down the entries to a stellar shortlist of just 10. Now, the decision is in the
paws of the public. Voting is now live on Clarks Village’s social channels, with dog lovers invited to pick their favourite pup before voting closes on Sunday (September 27). The winning pooch will then be crowned Clarks Village’s next CEO, taking the lead from last year’s winner, golden miniature dachshund Archie. The Clarks Village CEO shortlist is:

Lights switch-on and lantern parade to mark 10th anniversary!
The lantern parade and lights switch-on is a popular event in Frome
A
BELOVED Christmas event is returning to Frome in November marking a special landmark anniversary. Frome Town Council's Christmas Light Switch On and Light the Night Lantern Parade is set to return to the town centre on Friday, November 27, from 6pm to 7pm. And the 2026 gathering will mark 10 years of the muchloved part of the town's festive celebrations. To celebrate the anniversary, the theme for 2026 is Alice in Wonderland, with residents being invited down the rabbit hole to create lanterns inspired by the curious characters and imagery of the classic story. In the coming weeks, Frome Lanterns will once again host a series of community workshops, helping people of all ages develop their ideas, learn new skills and take part in this muchloved town tradition. People can book workshops via fromelanterns.co.uk. Mel Day and Aliss Vaas, from Frome Lanterns, said: "Ten years on, what still makes the parade special is seeing people of all ages take part and
make it their own. "Every lantern has its own story behind it, whether it's made by a family, a school group or someone joining in for the very first time. "We love seeing people's ideas take shape through the workshops and can't wait to see where the Alice in Wonderland theme takes us this year. "You can book our first family lantern workshop on
Saturday, October 31 at the Library through our website. Keep an eye out for all our November workshops which will be available to book soon." Lantern kits are also now available to buy, ready to be transformed into unique lanterns for this year's parade. Find them at Frome Town Hall (Monday to Tuesday, 9am to 5pm and Friday, 9am to 4.30pm) and the Discover Frome Information
Mel Day and Aliss Vaas from Frome Lanterns
Point at Frome Library (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am to 1pm, and Wednesday and Saturday, 10am to 4pm). Mayor of Frome, Cllr Mark Dorrington, added: "The Lantern Parade is one of those events that feels uniquely Frome. It brings together imagination, community spirit and a huge amount of hard work from all those involved. "Celebrating 10 years makes this year's event particularly special, and I'd encourage anyone who hasn't taken part before to pick up a lantern kit and get involved." The festivities begin before the countdown, with the Cattle Market Car Park transformed into a food court from 3pm to 7.30pm. Following the success of last year, there will be more food and drink options on offer for people gathering to enjoy the evening, organisers said. n For more information, including workshop dates and event details, keep checking back to www.discoverfrome.co. uk/christmas-in-frome in the coming weeks.

His work explores the character and presence of people and places, with light playing a particularly important role. His works can now be found in a number of private collections, including those of PricewaterhouseCoopers and musician Ronnie Wood. The Balcombe Estate also houses his Landscape Artist of the Year semi-final depiction of the Ouse Valley Viaduct. Merryn Kidd, CEO of The Palace Trust, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Tom back to The Bishop’s Palace, particularly following his fantastic achievement on Landscape Artist of the Year. How to create a shady spot - with plants... by Sally Gregson
A
FTER one of the hottest and sunniest summers on record, many gardeners are looking to make a shady area for next year. We are predicted to have an even hotter and sunnier summer in 2027, and if that prediction proves true, we shall be desperate to find somewhere cooler to sit outdoors. But shade can take quite a time to create. Trees grow relatively slowly, so perhaps it’s time to think about making a pergola, or a tunnel, and covering it, or them, with faster-growing climbers, such as Clematis montana or Virginia Creeper, which have the advantage of dropping their leaves in winter to allow the planting to mature and harden off. However, one of the most popular evergreen climbers for a warm, sunny spot, out of any
Clematis montana is a fast-growing climber
cold winds, is Trachelospermum jasminoides. It will provide evergreen cover and scented white flowers throughout the summer. But first, make a structure for the plants to climb. And autumn is just the right time to work out exactly where to place it – and
existing plants can be moved to make space while they are dormant. Then, find a joiner who has plenty of experience in putting up garden structures. There are many pitfalls for the unwary. And book them up. A good joiner is always busy.
While you are awaiting your turn, trawl through the online mail order nurseries. Their stock is always well grown and they, too, can be a font of good advice. Order your plants to arrive over the winter and keep them somewhere sheltered and near the garden tap when they arrive. When it’s time to plant, dig a large, deep hole and back-fill it with lots of organic matter to hold the moisture. Give the planted specimen plenty of water when it’s planted, and throughout the growing season. And mulch it well after planting. Within a year or two these climbers will have found their way over the new structure, and with lots of care, and water, will be set up to provide you and your friends and family with plenty of perfumed shade, and covered with flowers all summer long.

New parish council base planned in former library building
The main building was formerly home to Williton Library, which has now moved to nearby West Somerset House
A
WEST Somerset parish council could soon have a new home, if plans are approved. Williton Parish Council has applied for permission to redevelop the former village library and public toilets, in Killick Way, to provide “a formal meeting space for the people of Williton and the surrounding area”. As well as being home to the parish authority, a new council chamber will also “provide a bookable gathering space for occasional private events”, the application said. It comes after the parish council bought the building
after the library was shut amid cuts at Somerset Council, which saw the facility move to nearby West Somerset House. The property was later listed for sale with an asking price of around £150,000. Now, as well as providing a new communal chamber and administrative base for the Williton Parish Council, the new plans outline how the building will also be used “occasionally for private functions”. Changes planned as part of the plans include replacement dormers, new external cladding around the public toilets, some wall-mounted lighting, and new

signage identifying the ‘Public Toilet’ and ‘Williton Parish Council’. “A small canopy serving the entrance door is proposed as a future addition to protect users,” the plans added, while two existing redundant windows on the north façade will be removed and relocated to the west façade to improve ventilation to proposed admin offices. A new external door will be added to the front façade and one new external door will be added to the side façade to serve the public toilets, the proposals outlined. “The existing entrance door
will be removed, with the opening infilled using brickwork to match the existing masonry,” the application said. It added: “The proposed conversion will act as a formal meeting space for the people of Williton and the surrounding area. The chamber will also provide a bookable gathering space for occasional private events. “The accessible toilets will serve as general public conveniences and will be particularly useful during events at Williton Recreation Ground.” For more details on the plans, see somerset.gov.uk, application reference 3/39/26/009.
Somerset land still selling well at auction LAND in Somerset continues to hit high prices at auction. A recent Greenslade Taylor Hunt sale at Batch Country House, Lympsham, which saw a number of land lots far exceed vendors expectations. The auction went off like a rocket and saw the first two lots – of land at Templecombe – dwarf their initial guide price estimates. A lot featuring 3.73 acres of land and buildings at Common Lane saw the hammer come down at £192,000 from a guide price
of £60,000. The following lot, immediately next door, saw similar interest and the hammer landed at £151,000 from a guide price of £45,000. Other lots of land were equally in strong demand with 24.49 acres of land at Hinton Blewett, near Bristol, achieve £322,000 (£13,148 per acre) having seen competitive bidding in the room. Other highlights included 2.75 acres of land and buildings at Common Moor Drove, Glastonbury, achieve £124,000 and
5.84 acres of land and building at South Brewham achieve £190,000. Auctioneer, Robert Baker, said: “It was great to see several fantastic auction results with many lots far exceeding our vendors’ expectations. Demand for land appears to be strong with a number of potential buyers going home disappointed. Some lots also sold prior to auction and it was great to achieve an excellent clearance rate on lots.” Another auction is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, at the Aldwick Estate, in Blagdon.
