Somerset footpath named UK's favourite!
A
NORTH Somerset footpath has been named Britain’s favourite after a public vote. A section of the Strawberry Line path, near Winscombe, has won the title of Britain’s Favourite Path 2026. The walkway, part of a traffic-free route from the Mendips to the sea, topped a month-long poll run by the Ramblers charity. Supported by Postcode Lottery players, the annual contest celebrates the importance, beauty and diversity of Britain’s paths – with the winning image, right, of the path, by regular Leveller contributor Amanda Jane Baldwin, garnering the most public votes, beating seven other UK spots. In her nomination of the section, Amanda said: “The Strawberry Line is on my doorstep, my car isn’t needed
for this stunning walk. I moved to Winscombe, North Somerset, over seven years ago and this path has been trod by myself more times than I can count. “It’s accessible in all weathers, it goes on for miles, it’s an absolute pleasure to walk on, it’s beautiful and I appreciate the nature all around me while on the path. It is maintained by volunteers which makes it all the more precious to walk on.” As the nominator of the winning footpath, Amanda will receive £250 worth of Cotswold Outdoor vouchers, while the seven other finalists will each receive a £50 voucher. The winning path follows the route of a Great Western Railway branch line that ran from Witham Junction to Yatton via Shepton Mallet, Wells and Cheddar, transporting locally grown strawberries until the late
1960s. Thanks to the work of volunteers, the old railway line has been transformed into a 20-plus mile-long path enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users, mobility scooters, and on some sections, horse riders. The Britain’s Favourite Path judging panel included presenter, mental health

advocate and Postcode Lottery ambassador, Matt Johnson, who said: “Congratulations to The Strawberry Line on being crowned Britain’s Favourite Path 2026. Spending more time outdoors has become incredibly important to me, and walking has a wonderful way of helping you slow down, clear your head and appreciate the world around you. “It’s brilliant to see a path that means so much to its local community being recognised in this way. I hope this inspires even more people to lace up their walking shoes, discover somewhere new and experience the physical and mental benefits that come from simply going for a walk.” Now in its third year, Britain’s Favourite Path was launched by the Ramblers to “celebrate the importance, beauty and diversity of the nation’s paths”.

Fresh plan for Firepool could see landmark site sold off
The Firepool site is a key link to the town centre - including the cricket ground - from the train station
A
LMOST two decades after the gavel came down for the final time at Taunton’s livestock market, redevelopment of the site is still plagued by delay and indecision. Now, Somerset Council has revealed it is “looking at a fresh way” to regenerate the 17-acre Firepool site, which has remained largely undeveloped since the market closed in . The site, located in a key part of the town, between the main shopping area and the train station, is billed by the authority as “one of Taunton’s most important brownfield sites”. And the council is seeking a development partner to help bring long-vaunted regeneration plans to fruition – which could include, if approved, the site being sold. The site has seen some development, including the Firepool Centre for Digital Innovation, and the £5 million Firepool Boulevard walkway across the site, linking the train station with the town centre. Public money has also been used for “land assembly, remediation, transport infrastructure, public realm improvements (and) active
travel connections”, the council said. The council said the Firepool Masterplan – first unveiled in 2019 and updated in 2022 – remains “important to any future regeneration with its principles helping to shape development”. The document included the potential development of everything from homes and apartments, to commercial premises, restaurants and even an entertainment amphitheatre venue. But swathes of the site remain derelict. Now, it is hoped a fresh development partner will be able to establish what is realistic – and get the project moving. And a report produced for the Executive meeting on September 2 revealed some parts of masterplan could not be delivered without “a potential funding gap, with high construction costs, market uncertainty” and “commercial elements” contributing to “poor viability”. Due to a lack of money at the council to develop the site itself, or as a partner, a private developer is the preferred route
to see Firepool plans brought to life – with a ‘development agreement’ ensuring the council’s intended vision is followed. But it means some sacrifices from the old masterplan. The report said: “Potential opportunities identified included a greater emphasis on town housing, student
accommodation, later-living accommodation and other market-led uses. “Developers have indicated this flexibility could enable a viable scheme to be delivered and the viability gap to be closed.” The council’s Executive is being asked to approve the proposal to procure a suitable development partner in a bid to bring forward regeneration of the site and test the market for what can “realistically” be

delivered. Ahead of the meeting Councillor Mike Rigby, lead member for economic development, planning and assets at Somerset Council, said: “Firepool is a nationally significant brownfield regeneration opportunity and a gateway into Taunton. “The council has already invested heavily in preparing the site and is committed to seeing it developed in a way that supports the future growth and prosperity of the county town. “The Firepool Masterplan remains an important guide for the site’s future. We are now seeking a development partner who can work with us to deliver its ambitions in a way that responds to today’s market conditions and brings forward sustainable, high-quality development. “This approach allows the council to retain influence over the future of the site while benefiting from external expertise and investment. Any preferred partner and any proposals for the site would return to Executive for consideration before any final decisions are made.”

Meeting over Sunday parking charges plan
S
UNDAY parking charges could be rolled out across Somerset before the end of the year. Somerset Council has proposed a new five-tier structure for county car parks in a bid to make charging uniform across the county. However, the plans previously sparked outrage among traders and residents, with the council delaying the plans earlier this year. Now, the authority has now outlined proposed changes to the current fee-paying car parks. A council spokesperson said the Somerset Parking Review and Charging Principles Framework brings “a fair approach to parking fees in the county, ironing out disparities in practice between different towns, while supporting local businesses and residents”. Five new tariffs could be introduced in December
pending formal approval by Somerset Council’s Executive next month (September) after information was gathered from council car parks in recent months, which has been used to assess each site and create the five-tiered pricing structure. Tier 1 contains high-demand car parks in town centres, while Tier 4 is made up of rural/ village locations – which will maintain free parking for the first hour – and Tier 5 for custom sites that do not clearly fit into the other tiers, for example car parks used more regularly for residential, seasonal, or electric vehicle parking. The charges, which the council report said were “developed by an external specialist consultant”, will be in force between 8am and 6pm, ranging from £1.90 for an hour in Tier 1 to a free hour in Tier 4. All-day parking would cost
£12.90 at a Tier 1 car park, and £5.20 at a Tier 4 location. But the new charges will apply seven days a week and the new tariffs include an annual review of fees and charges. Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for highways and transport, said the changes were "about fairness and consistency across Somerset" and added: “As a unitary authority we inherited a range of different practices in different towns. It is only right that all our car parks are part of the same charging structure, where the same rules are applied to everyone.
“Within the different tiers there is plenty of room to accommodate different types of car park and usage, to reflect the role of each car park in supporting the local economy, including free provision for some of the time, as well as lower tariffs in less premium and more rural areas. “Tariffs at the busier end of the spectrum in bigger centres are aimed at encouraging turnover and sustainable travel into Somerset’s towns." After the meeting, a new Off-Street Parking Places Order will be published, with a 21-day statutory notice period when objections can be registered and considered. The Executive is also set to agree “further engagement commences on free car parks across Somerset, while engagement with stakeholders on on-street parking will continue throughout 2027”.

Plan for 225 new homes off busy road
A
SITE on the outskirts of Wellington could see 225 new homes developed, if plans are approved. Carden (Wellington) Ltd and MS GM Cubitt have applied to Somerset Council for outline permission to develop a 12.7-hectare site north of the busy Taunton Road, including homes, green spaces, play areas and more. The application laid out plans for “a new, sustainable neighbourhood of around 225 new homes” which would be “integrated with the existing market town, complementing Wellington’s character and landscape”. Around 57 of the new homes would be affordable. The application went on: “The new neighbourhood will benefit from generous green open spaces connecting to the surrounding countryside, footpath network and well managed waterways. “These will provide rich and diverse habitats and valuable community, leisure and recreational spaces.” Plans highlight the site’s easy
access to the Taunton Road, the B3187, as well as the new Wellington train station, which will be to the west of the proposed development. The application said the site was “a suitable location for new residential development”. “There are no constraints associated with providing access to the site by vehicle and the land can be readily accessed from the local adopted highway network at Taunton Road,” it added. “Supported by good pedestrian and cycle network, including a PRoW (public right of way) that crosses the site, the site has a sustainable location and benefits from good access to public transport links – including bus stops and the planned new railway halt/station as part of the Longforth Park scheme.” Despite areas of flood risk on the site, the application said new wildlife habitats would be created. “The existing natural features, such as the hedgerows, trees, and grassland, will be protected, and any impact on wildlife will be managed with

appropriate measures,” the documents said. “Plans to improve and create new habitats will help boost local biodiversity. With the right long-term care, these efforts will have a positive impact on nature and wildlife in the area.” Network Rail, which is
involved in the creation of the new Wellington train station, said it had “no objections in principle” to the plans. n The application is no open for consultation. For more details, and to comment, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search reference 46/26/0021.

Minehead has a new temporary Post Office
A
TEMPORARY post office has opened in Minehead - almost three months after the former branch closed. The new branch, at Queens Hall, in Warren Road, has taken on mail operations after the closure of the Co-op in The Avenue, in early June. Local MP Rachel Gilmour has welcomed the opening of a temporary Post Office in Minehead, following continued pressure and communication with Post Office UK. MP Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dem, Minehead and Tiverton) said she had been in constant contact with Post Office UK since the closure was first confirmed, calling for action to prevent residents losing postal services. "Post offices are a vital part of rural communities," the MP said. "They offer essential services and are often a lifeline for elderly residents and anyone

New Tesco Express store opens in Taunton
A
NEW Tesco store has opened in Taunton. On Thursday (August 27), staff at the new Tesco Express store in Bridgwater Road, Bathpool, welcomed the first customers through the doors. Heathfield Express, which has created 11 new jobs, is touted as stocking a host of products for workers at nearby businesses and those looking for a midweek shop - and boasts a Costa Express for those in need of a caffeine fix. Manager of the new store, Lucy Futcher, said: "I am very proud to being the manager of this store. Opening a new store is an amazing privilege and I’m looking forward to engaging with and being part of the community. The team and I are excited to deliver great customer service to all who visit us. "My favourite thing about
being a store manager is seeing the benefits of my fantastic team, working hard and being the best they can possibly be." Schools and community groups are invited to apply for community funding through the Tesco Fruit and Veg scheme, which sees three local projects voted on by customers in store every three months, with first place awarded up to £1,500, second place up to £1,000 and third place up to £500. Organisations can apply for a Fruit & Veg grant by going online at www.tescoplc.com/ sustainability/communities/ fruit-and-veg-grants. The new store also takes part in Tesco’s Community Food Connection scheme, which redistributes surplus food to charities and community groups at the end of each day. Since its launch in 2016, the Tesco Community Food Connection scheme has donated

more than 145 million meals to charities across the country. The programme is run in partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare, with more than one million
meals’ worth of food donated each month. The Heathfield Express store is open from 7am to 10pm every day of the week, except on bank holidays.
Pardoes are proud to work at the heart of our community, with local families, farmers and business owners across the South West. We’ve been here for over 100 years and will continue for generations to come.

The myth of the “Common Law Spouse”: What happens when an unmarried partner dies?
D
OES my unmarried partner inherit if I die? Not automatically. Under the law of England and Wales an unmarried partner does not have the same inheritance rights as a spouse or civil partner. Despite being one of the fastest-growing family arrangements in the UK, cohabiting couples remain surprisingly unprotected under the law. A persistent myth is that living together for a certain number of years creates a “common law marriage” with automatic inheritance rights. In law, there is no such thing as a “common law spouse” and this misconception can trigger lengthy and expensive disputes between surviving partners and the deceased’s relatives. No automatic inheritance rights If your partner dies without a valid Will, the law does not treat unmarried partners the same as married couples. The estate may pass to children, parents, siblings or other relatives under the statutory order of priority, regardless of how long you lived together, shared bills, held a joint mortgage or raised a family together. Can a cohabiting partner make a claim? Because there is no automatic right to inherit, a surviving partner may be able to bring a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. This includes anyone who lived with the deceased as if married for at least two years immediately before the death, as well as those who were being maintained by the deceased. These claims are inherently contentious, frequently pitting a grieving partner against the deceased’s adult children or estranged relatives. The court

weighs the surviving partner’s financial needs and resources against the competing needs of the beneficiaries and other statutory factors. What happens to the family home? Disputes often centre on the deceased’s property. If the house was held in the deceased’s sole name, the surviving partner will not automatically acquire ownership simply because they lived there and may face pressure to leave or see the property sold as part of the estate administration. How the property is owned matters: n Joint tenants: the surviving partner automatically inherits the deceased’s share by right of survivorship. n Tenants in common: the deceased’s share passes according to their Will or intestacy rules, which can leave the surviving partner in dispute with stepchildren or in-laws over the family home. Where beneficial ownership of the property is disputed, a claim under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996 (TOLATA) may also be relevant. How can unmarried couples protect each other? The risk of disputes can be significantly reduced with proactive planning: n Make a Will: set out clearly what you want to happen to your property, assets and savings. n Review property registration and deeds: make sure that ownership reflects your intentions, supported by a Deed or Declaration of Trust where financial contributions towards the property were unequal.
n Update beneficiary nominations: check pension and death-in-service arrangements carefully, since many benefits are paid under scheme rules rather than under the terms of a Will. An expression of wishes can help ensure your partner is considered. Seeking specialist advice If you are an unmarried surviving partner who has not been provided for financially, are facing eviction from the family home after your partner’s death, or if you represent an estate dealing with a cohabitant’s claim, you should seek legal advice early. Inheritance Act claims must generally be issued within six months of the grant of
representation. Advice from a specialist contentious probate lawyer is crucial to protect your rights and potentially explore early resolution, without the need for court action, before costs escalate. n To get in touch with our Contentious Probate Team, please email enquiries@ pardoes.co.uk or call 0800 862 0442.

Free pro dance shows at Somerset venues
S
OMERSET venues are to be treated to free professional dance shows thanks to a new community initiative. The ZoieLogic Dance Company, with support from Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants and in partnership with The Octagon Theatre & Westlands Entertainment Venue, is bringing its outdoor dance production RIDE to five Somerset community venues. RIDE is billed as a "playful and physically daring reimagining of the classic summer road trip, featuring three men and a full-sized Ford Orion". It will be performed at Wadham School in Crewkerne (September 15), Ark at Egwood in Merriott (September 16), The Maker’s Place in Ash (September 17), Pyrland School in Taunton (September 18), and as part of
Super Saturday in Yeovil town centre (September 19). "Invited communities will have the opportunity to experience incredible live dance theatre on their doorsteps, and seek to engage, change perceptions and inspire veterans, young people in alternative provision, adults facing challenges with their mental health, secondary school students and the general public in high-quality exciting art," a spokesperson said. The week-long Somerset tour will culminate in open outdoor public performances at Yeovil’s Super Saturday event, where audiences can discover and watch performances by the company for free at 11.30am and 2pm. Zoie Golding MBE, artistic director at ZoieLogic, said: "Receiving this funding is a significant achievement and
recognition of the importance of finding new ways to connect people with the arts. "This project allows us to explore how touring can be more responsive to communities, creating opportunities for cultural engagement in places and with people who are often overlooked by traditional touring models."
Katherine Beverley, arts engagement and outreach manager for Westlands and The Octagon, added: "We are delighted to be bringing ZoieLogic back to Somerset and excited to be working with them to bring their show, RIDE, to communities in the area. "This is an incredible opportunity for local residents to watch, be inspired by and engage with live performance on their doorsteps. We are extremely proud and excited to be a partner involved in this ambitious project, where we will support ZoieLogic to bring RIDE directly to audiences where they live."

Special engine sessions at motor museum aim to boost men's mental wellbeing
T
HE Balsam Centre in Wincanton and Haynes Motor Museum in Sparkford are teaming up to help turbo charge support for men’s mental wellbeing. The venues are running a new six-month block of the Motor Heads social group for men with a passion for cars, bringing together members to build friendships, reduce social isolation and develop a sense of belonging that supports their mental health. Balsam Centre project worker, Bruce Lloyd, said: “Men don’t always find it easy to talk directly about their mental health and wellbeing, and we know that many men in rural areas such as south Somerset are particularly affected by social isolation and

loneliness. “Motor Heads provides a great opportunity for them to come together in one of the best motor museums in the country, make new connections and talk about everything on four, three and two wheels, ably supported by passionate volunteers from both organisations.” A volunteer from a previous group said the gatherings boosted attendees' wellbeing and their interest in all-things motoring. “It is evident from the participants’ enthusiasm in discussing their past and current cars how much they enjoy the sessions, and you get the feeling that they would happily spend all day there given the opportunity," they said. “As a ‘petrolhead’ myself, I benefit from the time spent with them in such a wonderful venue, and I am convinced that
members of the group look forward to each session, as evidenced by the number of regular attendees.” Motor Heads meetings take place on the first Friday of every month at the Sparkford museum, with the first meeting at 10am on September 4, running until February 5. Meetings are free to attend but spaces are limited, so anyone wishing to join the group should contact The Balsam Centre via info@ balsamcentre.org.uk, or on 01963 31842, as early as possible to ensure they get a place. n For more information on the Motor Heads initiative at Haynes Motor Museum and booking details, visit the Blasam Centre website at www. balsamcentre.org.uk/motorheads.

Drought-tolerant plants for hot summers... by Sally Gregson
T
HIS summer is proving to be especially difficult for many gardens and gardeners. Not only the lack of rain, but the intensity of the heat is exceptional. But it is always possible to grow those plants that are suited to such conditions. Plants that come from southern Europe in particular have proven their ability to grow and flourish in these scorching temperatures. Beth Chatto’s dictum ‘the right plant in the right place’ has, as always, proven correct. She would be smiling to see all her sun-lovers growing away so happily. While we are a long way from her stamping-ground in Colchester, the dry heartland of Essex, we can see from the nursery’s website how well her planting is doing. Beth Chatto researched the plants she put In, especially when she turned her car park
into a dry garden. Famously she chose drought-tolerant plants such as silver-leaved lavenders, santolina and catmints that grow in dry, poor soils in full sun in their native habitats. She mixed them with shrubby Cistus and x Halimiocistus, and Osteospurmum, interspersed with grasses and bulbs that naturally thrive on poor, dry soils. Chatto started in the winter by digging in plenty of garden compost and grit to put the compacted soil of the old car park in good heart. The plants were put in and initially watered very well to ‘set them up’ for what she thought was to come. However, little did she know that the first summer would see record temperatures and drought – sound familiar? But she stuck to her plan. If a

plant died, she mourned its passing but did not re-plant that particular one. And by the end of the first year the new gravel garden was declared a success. She never watered that area again. She had proved that by selecting plants that are naturally suited to their environment, gardeners could
avoid lots of excessive, and expensive, watering. It had suddenly become completely unnecessary. The Dry Gravel Garden is now a template for anyone who gardens in similar conditions. As are all the other specialist areas of her lovely garden that is so up-to-the minute.
