Xmas ice rink returning to Clarks Village!
I
T MAY seem a long way off – but the countdown to Christmas is ON at Clarks Village, which has revealed the return of the centre’s ice rink. The Street shopping outlet will once again welcome the attraction, which sees the lawn outside the Shoemakers Museum converted into a magical icy wonderland, complete with real ice. Measuring an impressive 585-square-metres in size, the Clarks Village Festive Ice Rink will be entirely undercover, making it suitable for all weathers. It will open on Tuesday, November 10, welcoming skaters until Sunday, January 3. Skate sessions are set to include after-school skating, parent and toddler sessions, quiet sessions, disco nights and 2-for-1 offers, as well as brand-new Skate and Sing sessions.
The rink is wheelchair friendly and will also be available for private hire, including parties, school trips and community visits. Guests can even visit on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Designed and installed by Icescape, the custom-built ice rink will be themed and decorated for the season and will be located on the lawn of the Shoemakers Museum, with
a dedicated entrance from Clarks Village’s Restaurant Terrace. For the past two years, the outlet has held the World’s Biggest Santa Skate and World’s Biggest Elf Skate, welcoming guests to dress up for a fun, free family skate in a bid to set a new world record and hosted by Father Christmas. A relaunch event for 2026 has yet to be unveiled. Mike Jones, centre director at
Clarks Village, said: “We’re incredibly excited to bring back the magical Festive Ice Rink at Clarks Village for the entire Christmas season. “Whether you’re making a special visit to enjoy the ice rink or combining it with a day of discount outlet shopping, it offers a fun and festive experience for all the family. “Plus, with late-night opening restaurants and free evening parking and plenty to enjoy both on and off the ice, we can’t wait to welcome guests to Clarks Village to celebrate the festive season in style.” Tickets for the ice rink go on sale on Monday, October 5, with sessions running for 45 minutes and priced from £14, or from £12 for children aged 12 and under. Family tickets cost £44. At Parent and Toddler sessions, one child under five goes free with every adult ticket with free skate aids.

Wellington Carnival kicking off the season!
W
ELLINGTON is preparing to kick off the 2026 carnival season in Somerset, with thousands expected in the town on Saturday (September 26). Wellington Carnival is the first on the calendar in Somerset for this year, with towns around the county gearing up for a host of events. Organised by Wellington Carnival Committee (Somerset) Ltd, this year's Grand Illuminated Procession will begin from Rockwell Green at 7.30pm, while the Windy Wheelers Motor Cycles will set off at approximately 7.25pm to lead the procession through the town. The parade will travel from Rockwell Green, over Hilly Head, along Mantle Street and through Wellington Town Centre, finishing at Priory Junction. Carnival clubs, majorette troupes, schools, community organisations, collectors, emergency vehicles and visiting guests will come together for what organisers branded "an unforgettable evening of entertainment". The Wellington event is sponsored by Ellisons Commercial Training, backing notonly the procession, but the Official Carnival Programme and the Majorette Class. "As a local business supporting a major community
event, we are truly humbled by their generosity and commitment to Wellington Carnival," an event spokesperson said. "Please look out for the Ellisons Commercial Training vehicles in the main parade and give them a huge Wellington welcome as they travel along the route." They added: "Wellington Carnival is made possible through months of planning and fundraising by a small team of passionate volunteers, together with tremendous support from local businesses, organisations and the wider community. "Wellington Town Council has awarded the carnival a grant towards its considerable running costs. Its continued support of this important community event is greatly appreciated. "Oneline Wellington has provided generous sponsorship, a valued contribution and continued support, helping us meet the substantial costs of keeping this much-loved
tradition on the streets of Wellington. "Work Wear Online has supplied the fantastic official collectors' tops. Look out for collectors wearing their Give Us A £1 tops and carrying branded collection buckets. "Special Occasion Mascots will bring a selection of lookalike characters to support the Give Us A £1 campaign and entertain younger spectators and families along the route. "The committee also thanks Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, Somerset Council, the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services, the South Somerset Carnival Committees, Weston Medical Services, every sponsor, volunteer, organisation and supporter helping to make Wellington Carnival 2026 possible." Wellington Carnival 2026 road closures and traffic arrangements Road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the afternoon and evening on September 26, with drivers asked to move vehicles away from the procession route by 5pm at the latest. n 2pm-6pm: A one-way traffic system will operate between Perry Elm Roundabout and Bagley Road. n No access into Wellington

Illegal Traveller site near Taunton must be cleared: Court AN ILLEGAL Traveller site near Taunton must leave and the land be reinstated after a High Court ruling. Years of planning, enforcement action and legal proceedings have been undertaken by Somerset Council since the site – at Oxen Lane, North Curry – was reoccupied in October 2024. As the site had no planning permission for residential use, the council issued enforcement proceedings. A retrospective planning application for residential use of the site was refused, and an appeal against that decision dismissed.
Now, the High Court has ruled in the council’s favour, granting a final injunction to secure compliance and reinstatement of the land. The court concluded the enforcement action was justified and proportionate. Residential use of the land must now cease, and all unauthorised development removed in three months, with an extra months the removal of associated development and waste and the land to be reinstated. After the ruling, Councillor Mike Rigby, lead member for economic development,
planning and assets, said: “This has been a long-running and complex case, and we recognise that residents have been frustrated by the length of time it has taken to reach this point. “However, throughout this process the council has been required to follow both planning law and the legal processes set by the courts. We could not bypass those procedures, regardless of the strength of local feeling." He said the council would now "work with all relevant agencies to implement the court’s order".

Simply Red to top bill at Taunton show
P
OP legends Simply Red have been announced as the headline act at the inaugural Somerset Sounds event in Taunton next summer. The event – at the Cooper Associates County Ground – will take place on Sunday, August 22, with the Mick Hucknell-fronted soul popsters topping the bill as part of their Summer Funk ‘27 UK and European tour. They will be joined by M People star Heather Small and Grammy Award-winning soul outfit, Soul II Soul. Somerset Sounds, a joint venture delivered by Somerset County Cricket Club and promoter Full Fat 360, aims to establish the iconic cricket stadium into a landmark stop-off for summer music tours. The effort aims to build on the ground’s history of hosting iconic performers, including the likes of Sir Elton John, Rod
Stewart, and Lionel Richie. And Simply Red frontman Mick said the band was keen to get back on the road. “We can’t wait to get back out on the road again in summer 2027 to perform at some incredible and historic venues across the UK and Europe,” he said. “You can expect a set full of Simply Red upbeat hits to get you on your feet having fun in the sun with friends and family.” Oli Bartlam, founder of Full Fat 360, said: “We wanted our very first headliner to reflect the scale of our ambition. “Bringing a globally renowned, multi-platinum act to Taunton signals our commitment to making Somerset Sounds a flagship summer event for the entire South West. It’s about creating unforgettable live experiences right here at the club while driving cultural and economic
energy into the community.” And Caroline Herbert, commercial director at Somerset County Cricket Club, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming Simply Red, Heather Small and Soul II Soul to Taunton for the first Somerset Sounds. “The Cooper Associates County Ground has a fantastic history of hosting major live music, and this gives us the opportunity to build on that while opening the venue up to new audiences who may not have visited us before. “For us, Somerset Sounds is about creating something really special here in Somerset. We
aim to give people across the county and the wider South West the chance to see major artists on their doorstep, while establishing the Ground as a destination for live entertainment as well as cricket. “We’re hugely excited about what this can become over the coming years, and Simply Red feels like a brilliant way to begin.” n Ticket prices for Somerset Sounds start at £62.50 for general admission and £95 for gold circle, with hospitality options also available, plus fees. Slinky users defend "wonderful" bus service
S
OMERSET bus users have rallied around the Slinky - urging people to support the on-demand rural service. Last week, your Leveller reported claims from Slinky user Susan Rose that organisation of journeys had become a "shambles", which she feared was due to the use of AI route planning software. However Somerset Council, which operates the Slinky service, said journeys sometimes could take "longer than expected", but that problems were not common. And in response, Leveller readers have spoken of their support for the Slinky. Among them was 74-yearold recovering cancer patient Margaret Clarke, who said she uses the bus often to get from her home in Huish Episcopi to places like Taunton, Somerton and Yeovil.
"Before, I couldn't get the bus because if there's a step, I can't get on," said Margaret, who suffers with an arthritic hip. "If I had to get to Taunton, I had to struggle to get a bus to Yeovil I could get on, then get a us to Taunton," she went on. "Then the Slinky comes along and I can go to Taunton, to Langport, to Somerton, even Bridgwater if I wish. It's marvellous, it's a lifesaver." She said a lot of people who use the Slinky were "more or less housebound" before, but can now get around. "There have been times where you go out of your way a bit, or it takes a bit longer but I enjoy the views from the bus," Margaret added. "I'm passionate about it, I won't hear anything bad about
the Slinky, the drivers are wonderful, the ladies in the office who you book with are wonderful." Fellow Somerset bus user Mary, who lives at Butleigh Wootton, said while she was slightly outside the Slinky area, she encouraged others to use the new service slinking Glastonbury, Street, Langport and more with train services at Castle Cary. "No one knows where to go,
or what the timetable is," she said. "I feel it has been woefully under-advertised. "But people need to use the services, or they won't stay. Bus services are very important to help people get around." To help people ise the new Castle Cary train-linked services, we have published the timetable for the new services on page 10. n For the Slinky bus, which covers Somerton, Sedgemoor, Taunton, and Wellington, you can book using a smartphone app (search for Slinky Somerset in your app store), online at www.somerset.gov.uk/roadstravel-and-parking/slinkyservices, or by calling 01823 331266 between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Yeovil man attacked woman he met on app
Y
EOVIL man Leon Walker has been jailed for raping a woman in
2023. The 38-year-old denied the offence, but was found guilty by a jury in July. He was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court on September 11 to four years and three months in prison. The court was told Walker met the victim through a dating app in 2023 and arranged to meet her at her home, where he raped her following earlier consensual sex. The victim reported what had happened to police and, following an investigation by our rape and serious sexual offences team Operation Bluestone, Walker was charged. He pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, claiming it had been consensual. However, a jury found him guilty of one count of rape. He was acquitted of the two other counts. In a statement read out at the sentencing hearing, the victim said: “Before this happened I was an open and trusting person, however this incident also left me not being able to trust people as I used to. “I had to rebuild my

confidence in meeting new people and became far more sceptical and wary of people than I previously had been, “For a while after I avoided dating and meeting new people altogether. When I was eventually able to meet new people, I found myself to be on higher alert and more cautious than I previously needed to be.” After the sentencing hearing, PC Jake Whatley, the investigating officer, said: “This conviction reflects the courage
and determination shown by the victim in reporting the offence and supporting the investigation throughout. “It also serves as an important reminder that consent can be withdrawn at any time. “Being in a consensual relationship, or consenting to one sexual act, does not mean a person has consented to every other sexual act. “Everyone has the right to say no, and that decision must be respected.”
If you are a victim of rape or sexual assault, there is help and support available to you whether you choose to report it to the police or not. These organisations will not make you report the assault to the police if you do not want to. You can still report to police and they can still investigate, if you have already had counselling. n More details on the Avon & Somerset Police website, at avonandsomerset.police.uk.
Somerset on the big-screen in dark comedy Bad Apples A DARK comedy thriller that tells the story of a teacher's somewhat unusual approach to dealing with an unruly student was released in cinemas on September 18 - and Somerset plays a starring role. Bad Apples, starring Oscar-nominee Saoirse Ronan, tells the story of a Somerset teacher who kidnaps an unruly young pupil and keeps him in her basement. The film, written by Jess O'Kane and adapted from Swedish novel De Oönskade, by Rasmus Lindgren/Rasmus Andersson, was filmed at
several Somerset spots, including an empty school in the county and at Showerings Cider Mill, in Shepton Mallet, home to Showerings Cider and the birthplace of Babycham. The cider mill provides the backdrop for a school trip in the film, which was filmed in 2024 with the backing of council-run firm, Screen Somerset. Bad Apples production team was based at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, and also used locations around the city and the South West for the movie.

Big decision coming over Saxonvale site
A
N UNDISCLOSED developer is set to be recommended as the preferred bidder for the controversial Saxonvale site in Frome. Today (September 23), a special meeting of Somerset Council’s Executive is set to consider bids for the 12-acre former industrial site, in the heart of Frome, which is intended for mixed-use regeneration, including housing, commercial and leisure developments. A bid by community group Mayday Saxonvale, which has raised almost £1 million to purchase the site and progress its plans, is not recommended. Mayday Saxonvale was previously named the preferred bidder, but when the sale was not completed, Somerset Council again placed the site on the market. Now, the unidentified bidder has been recommended by officers to councillors for approval, which would then see the sale process begin. “Alongside the financial offer of each party, other criteria used to select the preferred bidder has included the proof of funds, experience, track record and likely prospects of delivering the mixed-use regeneration of the site,” the report said. “Professional advisors to the council, CBRE, have made an assessment of these points which support the recommendations of this report.” The report notes how, after withdrawing the exclusivity
The future of the Saxonvale site has been a long-running saga
deal with Mayday Saxonvale, the council issued a “short delay” to relisting the site for sale in a bid to allow Mayday to “progress a proposed Community fund raise share offer”. “Mayday did not provide the information reasonably requested by the council to assess the impact and consequences of approving the same within the time requested,” the report went on. “The marketing campaign therefore went ahead with usual site clearance programmes and other preparatory steps.” The report said 41 organisations registered their details and were provided access to full details of the site, with eight formal offers received within the bid deadline set. “A wide range of financial proposals were received with different approaches on the type and level of assumptions bidders were adopting,” the report said. “Detailed clarification questions, bespoke to each of
the bidders, were prepared and responses requested from all eight parties the week commencing July 13, 2026. “Queries largely focused on conditionality around planning and pre-exchange due diligence requirements. “CBRE arranged face-to-face clarification interviews with all eight parties in order to fully explore their financial offers and to facilitate a detailed conversation around the relative merits and commercial considerations of each proposal.” Best and final offers were requested by July 24. A final report was submitted by CBRE to the council on September 10, and remains confidential, but set out: • A summary of financial proposals received; • Analysis of all eight bids; • Bid analysis and conclusions • Recommendation • Indicative transaction programme The report was considered by council planners, who “conducted their own
assessment of the bids received, additional commercial considerations and CBRE’s analysis of the preferred bidder”. Today, members of the Executive will be asked to approve the recommended bidder and authorise the start of the sale process. Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s lead member for economic development, planning and assets, said: “Saxonvale is an important site for Frome and has been left undeveloped for far too long. “We need to move forward and we have carried out a comprehensive bidding process for the site which aims to deliver best value for the Council and people of Somerset.” Reacting to the news, a Mayday Saxonvale spokesperson said the people of Frome deserved to know who the preferred bidder is. “We are not being told what they are proposing for Saxonvale,” they said. “The assessment of the eight bids, the conclusions and the recommendation are all contained within confidential papers. “This is 12 acres at the heart of Frome and our town’s last major regeneration site. Yet there has been no public scrutiny of the proposal being taken forward for approval.” Frome & East Somerset MP Anna Sabine said she would be awaiting details of the preferred bidder before commenting.

Work is continuing apace on the new battery factory at Puriton
Picture: Agratas
Drivers warned of M5 disruption during work to connect battery factory to the grid
W
ORK to install a cable linking the new £4 billion battery factory near Bridgwater to the national grid will cause some disruption on the M5 through Somerset. The scheme, to install a high-powered electricity connection linking the Gravity site at Puriton with the national power grid, needs cables to cross the M5 between junctions 23 (Dunball) and 24 (Huntworth). As a result, changes will be made to the running of the motorway while the link in installed. Starting on October 5, motorists are being warned of up to 15 days of disruption – timed to avoid half-term and the carnival period, according to Agratas, the company behind the enormous battery factory development. A spokesperson for Agratas said the installation involved “cutting a trench into the M5 to lay ducting and install the
cables”. “The trench will be dug from one side of the motorway to the other, starting with the northbound carriageway,” they went on. “For most of the works period, there will be overnight closures of the M5 in one direction, with traffic being diverted onto the A38 through Bridgwater. “During the day, two lanes of carriageway will be open with a 50mph limit in one direction, with the other direction unaffected. “There will be one day when the trenching work crosses the central reservation, when two lanes, northbound and southbound, will be closed during the day (with two lanes remaining open, including the hard shoulder) and there will be one night when a full closure of both directions will be needed.” The Agratas battery factory is set to create thousands of jobs and generate £700m in economic value for the region
each year, re-industrialising the 308-acre brownfield site. Brian Stonerock, head of capital projects at Agratas, said: “We know there has been disruption on the M5 in the South West in recent months so we would like to thank motorists in advance for bearing with us through this short spell of roadworks. “We’ve also taken care to time the work so that half-term holiday-makers and carnival traffic should not be affected. “The power connection is vital for the Agratas facility, which will put Somerset at the forefront of UK battery cell production, creating thousands of jobs for local people and generating hundreds of millions of pounds in economic benefit for the county and the wider South West in the process.” Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for highways and transport, said: “The work is being carefully planned to minimise disruption to drivers
who use this busy route. It is crucial that the M5 remains open as much as possible as it is such a vital connection. “We fully understand the impact that closures of the M5 have on the surrounding network and communities. “We’d like to thank motorway users in advance for their patience and understanding, as well as those living and working along the diversion route.” And Tamara Parsons, programme lead for National Highways, added: “We are working closely with Agratas and Somerset Council to minimise disruption to road users while this important cabling work is carried out. “By carefully planning the programme and coordinating activity across the network, we are seeking to keep people moving on our roads while supporting a major investment in the region’s economy which will create thousands of jobs for local communities.”

T
HREE current or former Yeovil residents have appeared in court after admitting offences linked to the theft and supply of drugs in Somerset. Alastair Caines, 41, of Yeovil, Stuart Eales, 55, formerly of Yeovil, and Louise Larby, 42, formerly of Yeovil, were all sentenced at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse, on September 14. The prosecution followed a two-year investigation which began when a pharmacy contacted police after becoming aware of discrepancies in their stock. Prior to the sentencing hearing, all three had previously admitted conspiring to: n sell/supply prescription-only medicine (Oramorph) not in accordance with a prescription n supply controlled drug class C – Zopiclone n supply controlled drug class B – Dihydrocodeine n n supply controlled drug class C – Diazepam n supply controlled drug class C – Pregabalin Stuart Eales and Louise Larby both also previously admitted a charge of theft by employee, namely the controlled drugs between May
2022 and March 2024, while working for a pharmacy. Alastair Caines was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years, a three-month home detention curfew and a 30-day rehabilitation requirement. Stuart Eales was handed six-month jail term, suspended for one year. He must also carry out 150 hours of unpaid work. Louise Larby was sentenced to an 18-month community order, a 20-day rehabilitation requirement and a nine-month mental health treatment requirement. All three denied a further charge of conspiring to supply Tramadol, a class C controlled drug and this charge will lie on file. A fourth person, a woman, previously arrested in connection with the investigation, was released without charge. “Selling or sharing prescription-only medication is a criminal offence,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. “Taking a drug without the proper medical assessment carries a significant risk of an adverse reaction. “There is support for those struggling with drug use, and their families.

Special edition helps Henry celebrate his 45th birthday!
The new, special edition Henry is on sale now as part of celebrations for his 45th birthday and National Manufacturing Day
H
ENRY - the iconic vacuum cleaner made in Somerset - is marking a double celebration this week in a very special way. The long-standing household favourite turns 45 this year and on Thursday (September 24), will combine birthday celebrations with National Manufacturing Day to launch of a very special, limited-edition Henry. Designed to draw attention to the brilliance of British manufacturing, the limitededition National Manufacturing Day (NMD) vacuum will see the friendly face of Henry accompanied by an automated arm neatly placing a ‘y’ into his
name. It will also see a black and white Union Jack surrounded by the words 'Made in the UK' sitting prominently on his bowler hat. Just 1,000 NMD Henrys are being made to mark both the 130th anniversary of Make UK – the premier trade body for manufacturers and engineering companies in the UK – and the 45th anniversary of Henry. Simon Lawson, managing director of Numatic International, which employs 1,200 staff at its manufacturing plant in Chard, said: "Over one million Henry vacuums roll off our production line in Somerset every year, which is equivalent to one every 30 seconds. "As a business we take genuine pride in what we do. Quality, affordability, sustainability and reliability lie at the heart of our business, which is why Henrys are designed and tested to last at least 25 years, with many going far beyond that. "Our mantra is repair
rather than replace, so we can provide spare parts for every Henry ever made. "As a British company, we believe in investing in our future here in the UK. It’s why we’ve spent over £85 million on expanding our factory, and it’s also why we've recently installed a solar array that allows us to produce the equivalent of half a million Henrys a year purely from the power of the sun." Fiona McGarry, region director - south of England for Make UK, added: "National Manufacturing Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the strength and diversity of British manufacturing and give people a first-hand look at the skills, innovation and craftsmanship behind the products they know and see in their everyday lives. "Opening factory doors across the country helps challenge outdated perceptions of manufacturing and shows the public, particularly young people, the exciting careers and opportunities available across the sector. "Numatic International is a fantastic example of this,
welcoming more than 270 visitors to its Somerset factory on National Manufacturing Day. Henry is a product that generations of young people will have seen at home, in schools, hotels and other places in their everyday lives, so being able to see how it is designed and manufactured here in the UK can bring the reality of British manufacturing to life. "The launch of a special limited-edition Henry, marking 45 years of an iconic British product alongside 130 years of Make UK, is a fitting way to celebrate the enduring strength of manufacturing in the UK and the people behind it." n The limited edition Henry, an instant collector’s item, will be available from £129.99 via www.myhenry.com.

ESLA is hoping to install a 16-bay charging stop near a busy Somerset roundabout. A planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council on behalf of Elon Musk’s EV firm to develop an “electric vehicle supercharging facility” on land on the Southfields Enterprise Park, in Jordans Road, off the Southfields Roundabout at Horton Cross, Ilminster. The scheme would see a 16-bay Tesla charging site created near the Costa drivethru and McDonald’s eatery and include a substation, power cabinets, lighting columns, landscaping, drainage infrastructure and other works. Plans submitted to the council said the development was part of a “strategic investment in local charging infrastructure and forms part of Tesla’s wider nationwide rollout of rapid, reliable EV charging provision”. “Clear demand exists for publicly accessible electric vehicle charging services which will assist in the delivery of a widespread public charging
network, particularly for people who travel long distances, or who do not have access to charging points either at home or at work,” the application said. It went on: “Tesla’s Supercharger network is recognised internationally for delivering fast, efficient, and reliable EV charging. “The proposed supercharging facility will contribute to the Government’s wider transition towards ultra‑low and zero‑emission mobility, and will support local ambitions for decarbonisation and improved air quality. “Tesla’s network is available to all EVs and is not exclusive to Tesla vehicles.” The site, opposite the former Southwest Motor Homes site, has long been empty, used to store motorhomes and caravans from the neighbouring business. n The scheme will now be considered by Somerset Council planners, and for more information, and to comment on the scheme, log on to somerset. gov.uk and search application reference 26/02052/FUL.

E
NTRIES are open for the Somerset Business Awards 2027. Organised by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, the event looks to recognise the nest in the business across a range of categories, with entries welcome from across the county. Businesses, charities and organisations are being invited to put themselves forward for recognition. The awards were officially launched at a special event at Henlade House, near Taunton, attended by sponsors, judges and businesses keen to learn more about award categories and the entry process. Accountancy firm Albert Goodman is returning as headline sponsor for the 17th consecutive year, and Mike Cahill, partner at the company, said: "We're proud to be sponsoring the Somerset Business Awards again this year. It's something we look forward to, because it gives us a genuine chance to see the scale of talent and ambition across the county, from long established firms to newer businesses just finding their feet. Shepton McDonald's moves a step closer
P
LANS have been submitted for signs at a new McDonald’s drivethru in Shepton Mallet. A planning application for a new drive-thru McDonald’s restaurant at the Haskins Retail Park was submitted to Somerset Council in July, and is currently under consideration, including the creation of two commercial units in the former car showroom neighbouring the proposed site of the eatery. Now, plans for signage at the site have been submitted, including a 4.5-metre hight ‘totem’ sign featuring the famous ‘golden arches’ McDonald’s logo. The application also seeks permission for signs on the building itself, which is set to be constructed on a car park area of the park, with access from Townsend. Responses to the original McDonald’s application have
been mixed, with dozens of objections alongside a number of supporting comments. Shepton Mallet Town Council objected to the plans on the basis the McDonald’s would be open 24 hours a day, but said it would “welcome a revised submission with opening times that align more appropriately with the mixed residential and commercial nature of the area”. An objector said: “The plans do not incorporate any form of noise buffering or fencing to minimise unacceptable noise levels, nor places reasonable limits on additional noise created that could affect sleep and quality of life of nearby residents.” Another nearby resident said they fear the drive-thru would “have a direct effect on my quality of life”. Supporters included JH Haskins & Son Ltd, who own the retail park, who said the
How the new McDonald's in Shepton Mallet might look
McDonald’s would bring much-needed employment and redevelop a brownfield site. “This proposal represents a significant private investment into an existing brownfield commercial site,” they said. “Rather than developing greenfield land, the proposal makes productive use of an underutilised part of our existing retail park and will improve the overall appearance and functionality of the site. “Alongside the new restaurant, the proposal also includes the refurbishment and reuse of the former car showroom into two commercial units, bringing vacant
accommodation back into economic use.” Comments from Shepton Mallet Prison were also among those supporting the scheme. They said: “Our support is not based on any particular restaurant brand or operator occupying the site. Instead, it is rooted in the wider opportunity this investment presents for Shepton Mallet. As a town, we need to continue attracting investment, creating jobs and giving people more reasons to visit, stay longer and spend money locally.” n For more details on the new sign applications, visit somerset.gov.uk.

New screening units open!
S
OMERSET women and those registered with a GP as female will now benefit from quieter, more reliable breast screening after two ageing mobile units were replaced with new state-of-the-art scanning units. The upgraded units, which travel across the county, replace vehicles that had been in use for around 15 years. Deb Roan, a former nurse at the Somerset NHS Trust who was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2024, unveiled the new units in Wells. After undergoing treatment and surgery, Deb has become a passionate advocate for the life-saving benefits of early screening, diagnosis and treatment. Lesley Stephenson, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust’s superintendent radiographer, said the old units had “seen better days”, with recurring mechanical issues affecting both reliability and patient experience. “We have replaced generators twice and they’re very noisy and
vibrating, which is not ideal for the experience of patients while being screened,” she said. “It has become prohibitive and expensive to keep replacing everything on the unit.” The new units use a hybrid generator and battery system, reducing noise and vibration during appointments. Around 77,000 women or those registered with a GP as female in Somerset aged between 50 and 71 are eligible for routine breast screening, offered every three years. Those eligible are first invited between the ages of 50 and 53, with appointments continuing until their 71st birthday. The mobile units visit communities across the county to ensure screening is accessible. Dr Zoe Goldthorpe, the trust’s director of Somerset Breast Screening, added: “Screening people in their locality aims to make breast screening more accessible to
those who are eligible, bringing it closer to home and having it performed at a time and place which minimises impact on busy lives.” Hannah FitchGoodwin, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust’s breast screening programme manager, said the service is focused on early detection and prevention, helping to identify potential issues before symptoms develop. “The screening programme aims to detect early disease, which has better outcomes,” she said. “If a potential concern is identified, women are recalled to Musgrove to see specialist clinicians in the breast care unit and those subsequently found to have cancer treated at Yeovil or Taunton.” The two mobile units operate across all of the east and west of Somerset – except Frome,
which is covered by the Royal United Hospital Bath – over a three-year cycle, ensuring each community is visited regularly. And the new units also support wider NHS ambitions to provide more care in community settings. “We’ve been trying to align our work to the NHS 10 Year Plan, which is all about prevention and care closer to home,” Hannah added. Women, or those registered with a GP as female, over the age of 71 can still access screening by self-referral, while eligible transgender and non-binary people are encouraged to speak to their GP about being included in the programme.
What 'specialist' means in dentistry – and what it means for you A CONVERSATION with Dr Liliana Ruzzene, Specialist Oral Surgeon at David Neal Dental, Langport... Q: 'Specialist' gets used loosely in dentistry. What does it actually mean? 'Specialist' is not a marketing word in dentistry - it's a legal one. You can only call yourself a specialist if you hold extra qualifications: years of postgraduate training in one field, rigorous exams, and entry onto the General Dental Council's specialist register. Most dentists are excellent generalists; specialists are who they refer to when a case needs deeper expertise. If a dentist tells you they're a
specialist in something, it's worth checking - the GDC's specialist register is public, and anyone can look it up. Q: What's your own specialism? Oral surgery and dental implants - for over 30 years - covering wisdom tooth removal, complex surgical extractions, jaw pathology, bone grafting, and single or multiple implants. It's the surgical end of dentistry, beyond what routine general treatment covers. Q: Why should a patient see a specialist - and why does it matter? It matters because outcomes are measurably better for
anything complex: success rates for surgery, grafting or implants are higher in specialist hands, and helps avoids painful complications or additional treatment later. Ask for a referral if you're facing wisdom tooth removal, gum disease that isn't settling, or anything involving bone grafting or full-arch implants. Even if your dentist doesn't raise it, you're entitled to ask. Q: You work alongside another specialist at the practice - Dr Michael Zybutz. Yes, Michael is a specialist periodontist and co-founder of David Neal Dental, also with over 30 years' experience in advanced implant dentistry. He leads our Teeth in a Day treatment, and for anyone who's been told dentures are their only
option, this treatment can be genuinely life-changing: a full set of fixed teeth, anchored on implants, fitted in a single visit. No slipping dentures, no hiding a smile - just teeth that look, feel and function like your own again. Q: What does that mean for someone in Langport? It means patients here can trust that they're getting the highest standard of care, however complex their case. Two registered specialists, working under one roof, right here in Langport. n David Neal Dental Langport is located at 81 Bow Street, Langport, TA10 9PR. Social media history star hitting the pub!
A
CONTENT creator well known on social media for his tales of Somerset history is embarking on a pub tour for Halloween. Luke Knight has tens of thousands of online followers who watch his Knight Tales stories detailing a range of historic tales from across the county. Now, he is embarking on a special in-person pub tour for Halloween, when he will bring his Bump in the Knight Tales stories to Somerset venues. He will visit five pubs in five nights for a special creepy pub crawlie between October 26 and 30. “If you love a night out down the pub, and a good ghost story, then this is the perfect Halloween event for you,” Luke said. “You can expect gruesome history, dark folklore and some of the freakiest ghost stories
Luke Knight is bringing spooky history to Somerset pubs
– many of them first-hand encounters – from Somerset. Our county really does have some dark stories underneath its beautiful landscape. “Some of the paranormal stories still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. And I know what’s coming.” The five-night Creepy Pub Crawlie tour will stop off at the
following locations: n October 26: The Alhampton Inn n October 27: Eli’s Rose and Crown, Huish Episcopi n October 28: Old Down Inn, Chilcompton n October 29: The Flying Fish, Ashill, near Ilminster n October 30: Ad Astra Cider, near Axbridge “The talks are so much fun
and the feedback I’ve had from recent events has been fantastic,” the history buff added. “Not only that but I have purposely chosen the friendliest, quirkiest and most historic pubs and tap rooms in Somerset; to try and drum up a bit of support for them at a time when hospitality is struggling. “I’m told some of them even have a ghost or two. But I shan’t tell you which one – that would be telling.” The digital storytelling platform, Knight Tales, aims to bring the history, folklore and paranormal stories of Somerset to life and since 2023 has attracted more than 90,000 followers, with Luke’s videos seen by millions around the world. n Tickets for all pub talks can be bought online through www.knighttales.co.uk.

SOMERSET Film artist in residence, Edie Evans, has unveiled an interactive installation at The Engine Room in Bridgwater. Soft Ground: Accessible Landscapes Through Digital Translation, explores landscape, access and material knowledge, as part of Somerset Art Week. Developed at The Engine Room with support from Somerset Film's Creative Technologist, the work invites audiences to shape a digital landscape with their hands, using clay as the interface between body and technology. Visitors handle and move physical clay forms, while embedded sensors respond to touch, pressure and movement, triggering real-time changes to a projected landscape built from 3D scans of the local terrain. Sound shifts alongside the image, forming an evolving soundscape. The result is a
feedback loop between hand and land: touching the earth changes what the room sees and hears. Evans, a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture and installation, developed the piece from a practice rooted in walking, gathering and direct material engagement. n Soft Ground will be presented at Somerset Film until October 2. It is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 3.30pm, while a meet the artist creative network runs on Saturday (September 26) from 10am to 2pm.

Four ideal gifts for the student in your life...
C
HILDREN and young people across Somerset are heading back to school this week – with families and friends everywhere keen to send them off equipped to do their best. But besides the really obvious things – from uniform to folders, shiny shoes to stationery = what do our aspiring academics need to have? We grabbed some items you – and they – might not have thought of, whether heading to primary school, high school, or university. n School Backpack, from PO.P
Starting with the basics, a decent bag is a must-have – for a parent as much as the young person heading off to school, college, or university. Leading Swedish brand PO.P will be no stranger to many parents, famed for hardwearing and ethical clothes that “let kids be kids”. But the brand also makes bags, and this one is crafted from recycled materials – so not only are you getting a smart, durable bag, you’re also doing your bit for the planet (and avoiding rows over over-priced brands that will struggle to see the end of the autumn term). Waterproof (for those end-of-year walks to the bus stop), with padded shoulder straps and plenty of compartments – the PO.P School Backpack is out choice for the school run, for parents
and pupils alike. In true Scandi style, it’s also innovative, with a soft mesh back panel and adjustable chest strap to help distribute weight, as well as a safety-release buckle in case the child wearing it gets caught. It’s designed to fit A4 notebooks with multiple pockets inside and out for all the essentials. Reflective detailing also helps with visibility and it even comes with a perfectly fitted seat pad. Practicality to the max.

RRP: £60 Stockist: PO.P Groov-e Laptop Backpack with USB charger Now, if the school run is now becoming the university drop-off, the young person’s needs from their bag changes entirely. Rather than needing space for a pencil case and exercise books, the college or university student needs to lug their laptop around – and keep various devices charged. The Groov-e Laptop Backpack is designed for exactly this. Made to be practical yet affordable, the bag holds laptops up to 15.6″ in size, and has five compartments to keep belongings organised. The adjustable shoulder straps offer comfort and it even boasts a USB charging port –

And the USB-C to USB-C cables support charging of compatible Beats headphones and speakers while listening to audio, as well as lossless audio playback with phones and other players. You can get them in 1.5m and 3m variants, and they come in Power Pink, Bolt Black, Surge Stone, Nitro Navy and Rapid Red, to suit any young person’s taste (no matter how unpredictable!). good – product is a dream for anyone looking to put a smile on their beloved’s face. And who doesn’t need a really good charging cable, perhaps for their new laptop bag (see above)? Dr Dre-fronted audio tech firm Beats, famed for its innovative headphones, has branched out – or plugged in? – to the cable market. A cable might seem a simple thing, but it’s not. Getting a decent cable can change the game when keeping devices topped up. You’d be surprised. And they need to be hardwearing too – we’ve all had those cables that fray at the joins, prompting overwhelming fear they might start a fire or electrute the dog. Well, rest easy, the Beats cables are not only available up to 3 metres in length – enough to stretch from any socket to your bedside! – they are also made in a tangle-free woven design, having undergone thousands of hours of testing to ensure they help prevent
n Apple Puzzler, from Smart Games We’re big fans of Smart Games in our household, with their quirky products bridging the gap between fun and actually making brains work, for adults and children alike. The Apple Puzzler, among the firm’s latest offerings, is a tricky 3D game, requiring the player to place colourful worms inside a three-sliced apple. It might sound easy, but it’s a challenge, with rising difficulty making it a good challenge for minds old and young, should
