Millie, 19, walking for diabetes charity

A

TAUNTON teenager is putting her best foot forward to raise money to support people living with diabetes. Millie Gibson was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes at the age of just four - and the 19-yearold will be among thousands of walkers taking to the streets of the capital city for the Diabetes UK Wellness Walk London Bridges on September 27. The event sees participants take on five- and 10-mile routes along the River Thames, getting underway from Battersea Park at 9am, with staggered start times until 11am. During their treks, 10-mile walkers will cross 11 of London’s iconic bridges before finishing at Potter’s Field Park. The five-mile route starts at 11am from Potter’s Field Park and crosses four bridges before ending at the same place. And Millie said she is

looking forward to the event, having been taking part since she was nine years old. "I found it hard coming to terms with having diabetes for life and feeling different from my friends as I got older," she said. NHS stroke service changes now in place

P

OTENTIAL stroke patients in Somerset and Dorset will soon be first triaged via video link. A new video triage system is being rolled out in the coming weeks, aimed at transforming stroke care in the two counties. Pre-Hospital Video Triage (PVT) enables ambulance clinicians to speak via video link to stroke specialists in a hospital, helping decide which hospital would provide the best care for the patient. The system has already been rolled out at Dorset County Hospital, in Dorchester, and at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, alongside new dedicated stoke units – changes which have proved controversial, with the closure of a dedicated unit at Yeovil, replaced with a new acute stroke unit with enhanced rehabilitation facilities, offering

patients the chance to continue their recovery closer to home, once they’ve had their initial emergency care. And NHS chiefs said enabling hospital clinicians to see the patient via video link means that tests to confirm a stroke, including CT and MRI scans, can be prepared for their arrival, reducing the time to make a diagnosis. Initial trials of PVT in Dorset found it to be successful in getting patients to the right place first time – whether that be a specialist stroke unit or a hospital’s emergency department, they said. In some cases, joint discussion on the video call enabled a potential stroke to be ruled out, enabling patients to remain at home. “We all know that getting timely treatment, and importantly in the right place, is in the best interest of a stroke

patient and this system helps us to make that judgement much quicker,” said Dr Bernie Marden, chief medical officer for Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire, NHS Dorset and NHS Somerset Integrated Care Boards. Chris Turner, assistant director of operations for Somerset at the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, said: “For our ambulance clinicians, this level of instant expert advice via a video link could speed recovery and help save lives. It will also help us to determine the right place to take our patients,

ensuring we’re providing the best possible care in the critical time period following a stroke.” The project has the strong support of the national Stroke Association which, in a recent report, said such technology could “transform stroke care and boost survival rates”. Dr Marden added: “Introducing the PVT project is part of a wider plan to reorganise and improve stroke care throughout Somerset. We are committed to finding the best solution for all stroke patients in Somerset.” The phased roll out of PVT follows the controversial centralisation of emergency stroke care in Somerset and Dorset, which created two 24/7 Hyper Acute Stroke Units which opened on September 9, aiming to provide faster access to treatment – reducing the risk of disability following a stroke.

Green light for 750 new homes, school and more in Bridgwater

P

LANS for up to 750 new homes, a primary school, play areas and more on the outskirts of Bridgwater have been approved – despite opposition from some residents. The scheme, submitted to Somerset Council planners by Thrive Architects on behalf of Edward Ware (Bridgwater) Ltd, would see a “new neighbourhood” developed on a 32 hectare site between the M5 and Bridgwater, bounded by Polden Bower School and Bower Farm. As well as hundreds of new homes, the plans outline a 2.52-hectare area for “educational purposes”, including a new primary school and a “community facility”, with a new spine road – capable of accommodating a bus route – to provide access off Bower Lane. A mix of homes, including apartments, detached and semi-detached properties, would be built on the site, developed in phases. Campaigners against the plan said the development would not address a lack of rental or affordable housing in the area, and put additional strain on

infrastructure in Bridgwater. But the application said the development would be “sustainable, accessible and attractive”, while addressing the housing need. “East Bridgwater will have its own distinctive design and a layout that reflects its specific position within the town,” the application said. “This new neighbourhood will therefore have an identity specific to its position and will, through the development of the masterplan and these development and design principles, aim to create a sustainable, accessible and attractive high-quality development.” Housing would be “appropriate for all ages”, with open spaces “for people to enjoy their leisure time”, as well as improvements in Bower Lane “to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists”, as well as improving links with the Bower Inn. The application also outlines how providing the required 30% affordable housing target would make the scheme “not viable”, suggesting even zero affordable housing would not be profitable without scaling back the

development. However, the approval by Somerset Council’s Planning North Committee included a condition of 6% of the developed homes being classed as ‘affordable’. Dozens of submission opposing the plan were considered. One said: “We need house, no denying that, but not before we have infrastructure that can cope with it, alongside adequate amenities. “Also, these homes need to all be rentable by (a) housing association or council for people of the local area, not bought by private landlords and rented out at extortionate prices. “The housing situation, especially affordable rental properties, is beyond dire.” Concerns were also raise dover flooding, a lack of public transport options and an increase in traffic on surrounding routes, which one resident said were already “gridlocked”. n For more details on the plans, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 09/23/00003.

POLICE have issued a CCTV image of a person they would like to trace as part of an investigation into an assault outside a Yeovil kebab shop. The incident unfolded outside the eatery in Stars Lane at around 11.30pm on Friday, July 17. “The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be serious and has since been discharged,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. “We do not believe there to be any wider risk to the public. “We have carried out a number of enquiries in relation to the incident, including a trawl of CCTV, intelligence checks, and have spoken to witnesses, and we are now releasing an image of a man who we would like to speak to because we believe he may have information which could assist our enquiries. “The male, pictured, is described as white, between the ages of 18 and 25, who is wearing a black T-shirt, dark trousers, and white shoes. No more details surrounding his description have yet been established.” Anyone who recognises the person in the picture, or has information about the assault, should contact police on 101, quoting reference 5226200117, or complete the Avon & Somerset Police online appeals form.

Lock of royal hair goes under the hammer

A

LOCK of hair from Henry VII’s sixth wife – Catherine Parr – was among lots at a Somerset auction. The Somerset Auction Rooms, at Junction 24 near Bridgwater, hosted the quarterly Collectors’ Sale held by Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH), with a “fascinating mix” of items up for grabs. Among them was a lock of hair reputed to belong to Katherine Parr – Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife. The lock, framed and glazed, featured an indistinct note on the back of the frame in an 18th Century style. After Henry VIII died in 1547, Catherine married Thomas Seymour, 1st Baron Seymour of Sudeley, but died shortly afterwards, on September 5, 1548, of ‘childbed fever’, following the birth of her daughter.

Catherine Parr was Henry VIII's sixth and final wife - and a lock of her hair, inset, was sold in Somerset

Pictures: Master John/ GTH

She was buried in St Mary’s chapel, in the grounds of Sudeley Castle. During the English Civil War, her grave was disturbed by the ruination of the castle, and

was re-discovered in 1782, when her coffin was opened out of antiquarian curiosity. Experts said her body was found to be surprisingly well preserved, “entire and uncorrupted”, with a few locks of hair taken. More hair was taken when the coffin was periodically re-opened over the next decade, but by 1817 the body had been reduced to a skeleton, according to records. Catherine’s coffin was moved to its current location, in the restored castle chapel, in 1861, lying beneath a neo-Gothic tomb designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. She remains the only English queen to be buried in a private castle. The lock offered in the Somerset sale came from the

Rev ACR Clarke, a clergyman associated with the chapel, and drew a good deal of pre-sale interest. When the sale came up, bidding was already in excess of the guide price, with the hammer eventually falling at £1,100. Elsewhere in the sale was a large selection of coinage, including a Victorian £2 example from 1887, which sold for £1,400. A mohair teddy bear by renowned German maker, Steiff, dating from around 1910, found a new home for £450, while three stoneware vestas, or match strikers, sold for £500. The next similar sale takes place on Wednesday, October 28, and for more information and to consign items, call the salerooms on 01278 410250.

Bus user claims Slinky system is a "shambles" The Slinky bus has been rolled out across Somerset after a successful trial in Somerton and Langport

T

HE Slinky bus service which offers bespoke journeys to people in rural parts of Somerset - has been widely hailed a success. Paid for from £13 million of money from the Government's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) grant fund, Somerset Council launched a trial of the Slinky service in 2024, covering the Langport and Somerton area. Later, more BSIP money was used to extend full-time Slinky services covering the two towns, as well as rolling it out in all major regions of Somerset, including Taunton, Wellington and Sedgemoor, from September 2025. The Slinky allows travellers to book a journey between 'stops' of their choice, giving freedom to users on both timings and regularity and negating the need for a commercial supplier to commit to operating an unprofitable service. One user of the Slinky service from the early days is Susan Rose, who uses the bus to travel from her home in Huish Episcopi to tend her livestock in Long Sutton.

"I sometimes use the bus two or three times a day," she said. "Usually it's not too bad." But she said she had noticed a variation in services in recent months - which bus users suspected was down to AIpowered software which plans the routes. "It seems that the system doesn't work and has been a shambles," she said. "Some people have been back and forth on buses, away from where they want to go, to pick up other passengers. "When your journey changes, which sometimes happens, you are supposed to get a text message, but I haven't had one for months and some journeys have changed, sometimes understandably. It's a shambles." And she said those without access to a mobile phone or the internet were left unaware of changes to their booked trips. Somerset Council said a French company - Padam provided the "digital booking platform" software which plans the Slinky routes and issues updates. "There have been a few updates since the launch, however the platform has

largely stayed the same since the service was launched," a spokesperson said. "No new AI software has been added." They said the booking platform will "dynamically schedule trips, meaning there is a time window either side of their initial pick-up time that the journey could be moved so more bookings can be accommodated", and journeys could take longer than expected - "but unlikely to exceed an hour" - as "other passengers could be picked up or dropped off on the way to your destination". Slinky users were advised to book any trip based on the required arrival time if they were heading for an important appointment, as journeys are often altered 10 minutes earlier or later. "We realise that for those without a smart phone or access to the internet, the time update messages are not available," the spokesperson added. "We’re working with Padam for a solution for those booking by the call centre." They said they had not been made aware of any issues with

Picture: Somerset Council

the text message service, but advised anyone experiencing problems to reinstall the Slinky app. "Since its launch, the Somerton Slinky service has carried more than 20,000 passengers and continues to grow in popularity," the spokesperson added. "Customer satisfaction remains very high, with passengers rating the service an average of 4.9 out of 5 over the past six months. "Across Somerset, Slinky membership has increased from 5,600 to 7,500 over the last year, while use of the newer digital services has grown significantly. These trends show the service is helping more residents access healthcare, employment, education and community activities. "While not every journey runs perfectly, we investigate issues when they arise and work continuously to improve the service for passengers." n For more information and to sign up for the Slinky service, visitsomerset.gov.uk/roadstravel-and-parking/slinkyservices/slinky-digital-somerton.

Landlord honoured for efforts after crash

A

SOMERSET pub landlord who stepped up to help others during a county tragedy has been given an honour in a special ceremony. Eric Norman was hailed a “community hero” after opening the Rest and Be Thankful pub, in Wheddon Cross, after a tragic coach crash nearby, which claimed the life of 10-year-old Oliver Price, in July last year. Mr Norman immediately opened the pub as a place of refuge after the incident, which saw a coach – full of school children returning from a day trip – flip onto its roof and plunge down an embankment near the Exmoor village. Children, school staff, emergency services workers and members of the public were welcomed to the pub in the aftermath of the tragic incident. At a recent ceremony, 74-year-old Eric was presented

with a British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his actions by the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq, on behalf of King Charles. Mr Norman said he was “honoured and humbled” to receive the award, and added: “I like to think this medal is for the entire community who within half an hour rallied round on that dreadful day and tried to give help where we could. There were many people involved.” The Lord Lieutenant of Somerset said: “Mr Norman’s actions were exemplary. I cannot praise him highly enough. “Local leaders have spoken in incredibly warm words about his actions and how they enabled the emergency responders to work with pressures immediately removed by his quick actions.

Eric, right, with Lord Lieutenant, Mohammed Saddiq

“The British Empire Medal (BEM) is awarded on behalf of the Monarch. It honours ‘hands on local community contributions, long term charitable work or innovative local volunteering.”

The presentation took place at a garden party held near Frome, organised by the Lord-Lieutenant, to recognise and honour the work and the impact of a range of Somerset charities.

POLICE want to speak to this person in connection with burglaries at a Yeovil building which saw a communal door forced and parcels taken. Avon & Somerset Police said that on two occasions, entry was forced to Central House, in Church Street, Yeovil, before parcels were stolen from the doorstep of a flat. The latest incident happened at around 3.20pm on Friday, August 14, a spokesperson said. "Enquiries continue into the incidents, and we are now releasing an image of a man we would like to speak to because we believe he may have information which could assist our enquiries," they went on.

"The man, pictured, is described as white, between the ages of 35 and 45, around 6ft tall, with short brown hair, a short scruffy beard, of slim build, and has tattoos on his back/left shoulder." Anyone who recognises the person pictured, or has information about the Yeovil thefts, should contact police on 101, quoting reference 5226232568, or complete the Avon & Somerset Police online appeals form.

'Council must think again on parking'

P

ARKING charges might not sound like the biggest political issue of the day, but across Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Highbridge and our surrounding villages, they matter. That is why I am concerned by the latest proposals from the Liberal Democrat-run Somerset Council. In Bridgwater, existing chargeable council car parks operate Monday to Saturday. The proposals would extend charging to Sundays. At West Quay, an all-day Sunday stay would cost £6.80. There are increases too. At Market Street, all-day parking would rise from £6.90 to £8.90, an increase of around 29%. This is the last thing Bridgwater needs. It will increase further the number of people who park for free at the retail park and then don’t go anywhere else for their shopping. The Liberal Democrats have

by SIR ASHLEY FOX Conservative MP for Bridgwater

already caused enough damage to our town centre. The one-way system on Salmon Parade and East Quay has created traffic chaos and made it harder to get around Bridgwater, while the prolonged Eastover roadworks caused months of disruption for residents, businesses and anyone trying to visit the town. Now they want to add higher parking charges and Sunday fees on top. That is unacceptable. Our traders need more people coming into Bridgwater, not another cost and another reason for shoppers to stay away. The situation in Highbridge concerns me too. Bank Street car park currently operates Monday to Saturday, with all-day parking costing £4.60. Under the proposed new tariff, that would

increase to £6.80. On top of that, charging would be extended to Sundays. For somebody who simply wants to spend a Sunday in Highbridge, visit local businesses or see friends and family, that is a new cost where there currently isn't one. Then we come to Burnhamon-Sea. Burnham's main council car parks already charge on Sundays, but motorists would still face increases under the new tariffs. At Oxford Street, for example, all-day parking would rise from £5.80 to £6.80. But it is what could come next that concerns me most about Burnham. The council's own document classifies Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge as a “High” priority for on-street parking

intervention. It proposes introducing charges in existing free limited-waiting areas across Burnham town centre. My message is simple: leave Burnham-on-Sea alone. We must also remember our rural communities. If you live in villages such as Chedzoy or Over Stowey, driving into town for shopping, appointments and services is often a necessity, not a choice. Penalising motorists also means penalising rural communities that do not have adequate public transport alternatives. My position is clear: no new Sunday charges where parking is currently free, rethink the proposed price increases, and drop plans to extend on-street charging across Burnham-onSea. Our town centres need people coming through their doors. Somerset Council should be supporting traders and encouraging visitors – not giving them another reason to stay away.

'Inspiring' Reform UK event in Somerset OFF the back of something of a controversy-laden national conference in Birmingham, Somerset Reform UK supporters gathered in the county for an event of their own. The party's Taunton and Wellington branch held a gathering in the county town, welcoming members, councillors and supporters from across Somerset and other parts of the West of England. After opening with a tribute to former MP Ann Widdecombe, which had also been shown at the National Conference, the group heard from speakers including MP Danny Kruger, who represents the Devizes constituency, in Wiltshire. "He outlined his role in helping to prepare Reform UK

for the prospect of forming a future government, including work to enable ministers to regain greater control from the Cabinet Office and its 12,000 staff," a branch spokesperson said. The second guest speaker was George Finch who, at just 20 years of age, leads Warwickshire County Council as well as Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council. He has become something of a controversial figure, having already faced a vote of no confidence in Warwickshire, as well as facing claims he led a culture of bullying at the authority. But the spokesperson said the speeches had been well received. "Both speakers provided an inspiring message to members,

encouraging them to become actively involved and to prepare for forthcoming local and national elections," they said. The event was introduced by branch leaders Robert Holland and Stephen Tierney, while the organising committee was led

by Louise Peace. The spokesperson added the gathering "provided an opportunity to share ideas, hear from leading figures within the party and encourage greater participation in campaigning ahead of future elections".

Garage opens at prominent former Volvo dealership site in Taunton

Before and after the transformation of the former Volvo site in Taunton

A

FORMER Volvo dealership site in Taunton has been revamped and reopened as a new garage under a 15-year lease. After the Volvo dealership relocated to Priory Way in 2018, the property Priory Bridge Road site lay derelict for some years in a prime location. In 2024, it was bought by Somerset developer Summerfield, with a pre-let agreement in place to create a 4,820sq ft industrial facility for Formula One Autocentres. Demolition of the former garage started in November 2025, with construction of the new property getting underway in January.

And on July 25, Formula One Autocentres took occupation of the site, officially opening on September 3, with rental firm Enterprise Rent-ACar also on the property. James Holyday, group managing director at Summerfield, said: "We are delighted to have completed the transformation of this prominent site and to welcome Formula One Autocentres to Priory Bridge Road. "The project has successfully transformed a property that had been vacant for a considerable time into a modern, high quality facility for a well-established national occupier. "Securing a 15-year lease demonstrates confidence in both

the quality of the development and Taunton as a strong business location." Gareth Cross, Formula One Autocentres regional manager, said: "We are delighted to have opened our new centre at Priory Bridge Road. "The facility provides us with an excellent base from which to serve customers across Taunton and the surrounding area. "This new lease represents a significant long-term commitment to the town, and we would like to thank Summerfield and the wider project team for delivering such a high-quality facility." And Nigel Whelan,

managing director at Devon Contractors, which carried out the development work, added: "It has been a real pleasure to have once again been working closely with Summerfield Developments and the wider project team to deliver this fantastic new facility. "We are extremely proud of the finished building and would like to thank Summerfield for placing its trust in our team, as well as Stone + Partners Architecture and everyone involved in the design and delivery of the project."

Calls for reservoir fund for farmers to be expanded as climate change continues...

A

SOMERSET MP is backing calls to boost a £15 million government scheme to support farmers creating reservoirs on their land. Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dem, Tiverton & Minehead) said the Government should launch a "call to store" programme in a bid to unlock the water storage potential sitting idle on British farms. The calls come as farmers across Somerset count the cost of a summer of severe drought. Lib Dem leader Ed Davey and the party's environment, food and rural affairs spokesperson Tim Farron called for the change on Back British Farming Day (September 9). The party is challenging the Government to remove the planning and funding barriers stopping farmers from building

Rachel Gilmour, above right, has backed calls for farmers to be helped to develop reservoirs, inset

reservoirs and other water storage on their land, arguing a properly resourced national programme could unlock

significant new capacity, helping farms cope with both drought and flooding as extreme weather becomes more frequent due to climate change. Amid drought declarations across much of the country this summer, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a £65m funding package to support farmers - including a £15 million reservoir grant. However, the fund will not open until the autumn, with the Lib Dems saying it is "nowhere near enough to meet the scale of the crisis". A party spokesperson said farmers' drought losses "this year alone run into hundreds of millions of pounds", and called for the fund to open immediately, increased, and extended beyond arable and horticulture to cover livestock and mixed farms. Somerset MP Ms Gilmour backed the calls after what she said had been "an extremely punishing summer for farmers in the constituency, who have faced drought conditions alongside a bluetongue outbreak that has hit the South West harder than any other region in Britain".

"I believe a national call to store programme will have a positive impact on our farmers," she said. "The £15m reservoir grant is nowhere near enough, and won't come soon enough for our farmers, who have told me they have had one of the worst summers they have ever experienced, with the Bluetongue virus outbreak and the droughts that have hit Tiverton and Minehead. "Food security is national security. My message to the government on behalf of all the farmers in Tiverton and Minehead is that climate change demands will not wait for Whitehall to catch up." The calls comes as farmers also battle Bluetongue, a disease affecting animals including sheep and cattle, with more than 1,100 cases reported in the UK. A total of 983 cases had been reported in England, as of September 12, with 122 cases in Wales, 27 cases in Scotland and none in Northern Ireland, the government said. And also as of September 12, Somerset had seen 94 cases reported, while Devon had 481, Dorset 24 and Wiltshire, three.

Silver shines brightly at Somerset auction

S

ILVER shone brightly at a Somerset auction – with pieces from notable makers securing top prices. The Somerset Auction Rooms, in North Petherton, were the venue for the latest Greenslade Taylor Hunt jewellery, watches and silverware sale, with a fine entry of quality items ensuring top prices for the lots consigned. Among them was an extensive collection of George III sterling silver flatware, featuring examples from several famed makers including Randle Chatterton, John Lias and Solomon Hougham. This set sold for £3,100. A Victorian sterling silver tea service of neo classical design, finely engraved with Arabesque decoration, also proved popular despite the coffee pot sporting a broken handle. Hallmarked London 1872 and including a teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl this service by Savory & Smily (Goldsmiths Alliance) went for £2,500. Watches also continued to draw interest in the saleroom with a Patek Philippe 18ct gold

hunter pocket watch the pick of those on offer. The smart example, in good condition for its age, sold for £2,850. A less stellar price, but with an out of this world back story, belonged to a vintage Seiko ‘Pogue’ Chronograph wristwatch from the 1970s. The ‘Pogue’ nickname was attributed to this model after NASA astronaut William Pogue wore a Seiko 6139, with a yellow dial into space, making it the first automatic chronograph to make this momentous journey. The one at auction was not working, but had its original box, and went for £370. Back in the silver section, an Art Deco sterling silver tea service complete with teapot, coffee pot, cream jug and sugar bowl sold for £1,650. Of local interest was an 18ct gold Swiss open face pocket watch presented to Mr FJ Reed, honorary secretary of Bridgwater Albion FC in 1904. Mr Reed went on to be mayor of the town in the 1930s.

Despite missing its glass face the pocket watch sold for £1,300. Close behind was an antique 9ct gold double belcher link chain which sold for £1,200. A dainty 9ct gold opal and diamond wreath brooch went for £600, while two plain 22ct gold wedding bands made £750. Another 22ct gold plain wedding band sold for £400. Increase in Somerset taxi fares approved

T

AXI fares could be on the rise in Somerset after an increase in the maximum allowable charges. Somerset Council has approved an update to the maximum fares licensed taxi drivers can charge across the county, which they said reflected increases in operating costs and the cost of living since fares were last adjusted, in May 2024. The fares are the maximum taxi firms can charge; operators can continue to offer cheaper fares if they choose to do so. Approved changes for taxi fares in Somerset include: The maximum standard fare for journeys of up to one mile

rising from £4.60 to £5.06. Increases to maximum charges for additional mileage and waiting time. Soiling fees and holiday surcharges remaining unchanged. The decision follows a comprehensive review of economic conditions, including a 10.69% rise in the cost of living and substantial increases in fuel, insurance and vehicle maintenance costs, the council said. Councillor Federica SmithRoberts, lead member for communities, environment and climate change, said: “Regularly reviewing taxi fares is essential to ensure that Somerset

residents and visitors continue to have access to safe, reliable and regulated

transport. “These changes reflect the real-world pressures faced by drivers while keeping fares competitive with neighbouring areas.” The revised fare structure sets the maximum fares that can

be charged by licensed hackney carriage taxis in Somerset. Drivers are not required to charge these rates and may continue to charge lower fares if they choose. Under the new rates, a standard two-mile journey will cost a maximum of £8.60, compared with the current maximum fare of £7.60. The updated fare table will come into force no later than September 19.

Flags will celebrate town legacy of making

A

SOMERSET town’s historic legacy of making is to be honoured through a new initiative being unveiled later this month. Flagship Crewkerne: A Town-Wide Celebration of Heritage, Craft, and Community will see dozens of flags raised around the town in what organisers called a “vibrant celebration of local heritage, creativity, and community spirit”. The flags, which draw inspiration from the town’s history of making from worldrenowned sailcloth and webbing, engineering and textile innovation, will be made y artists and the community and will fly above town streets from September 25 to October 28. “Crewkerne’s heritage is rich with craftsmanship and ingenuity,” a spokesperson said. “As recorded in the

Domesday Book, the town’s market was once the second most valuable in Somerset, and by the 19th century Crewkerne was home to 27 sailcloth firms, employing over 20% of the local workforce and supplier to the Navy and important ships such as Sovereign of the Seas. “Flagship Crewkerne brings

this legacy into the present, celebrating the makers, businesses, and community groups who continue to shape the town today and imagining the skills and opportunities that could define its future.” Each flag – many of which have been made during workshops over the summer –

will tell a story linked to the past, present or future of the site where it flies, they said, from the Clarks shoe factory and Crewkerne Station to the bakery, Post Office and wooden rocking horses carved in the town. Flagship Crewkerne is led by Open Doors Somerset and Creative Crewkerne, with support from Crewkerne Museum & Heritage Centre, Boat Building Academy, Lyme Regis, Crewkerne Business Network, Dawes Twine Works, West Coker, Crewkerne Town Council, schools and community organizations. A digital map will be available to find all the flags, with a launch event planned for 6pm on Friday, September 26, outside Crewkerne Town Hall.

Home & Garden

Start preparing your garden for next year... by Sally Gregson

A

FTER a remarkable summer of hot sunshine and long-lasting droughts, the first signs of autumn are to be welcomed by gardeners everywhere. Assuming no torrential down-pourings are in prospect, before starting to do some autumn planting, take a look at the ground you want to plant into. Begin by spreading a layer, 3cm or 4cm deep, of mulch on the soil in the next few weeks, come rain or shine. This will DAVIES COUNTRY SERVICES. Gardeners, CRB checked. help retain the moisture in a dry season, and, curiously, it also helps heavy soil to drain so it will be better able to cope with whatever next summer brings. Make a list of plants you know will manage well in your soil and go shopping with that list held firmly in your hand. Remember, anything off the list might have to be potted separately and kept watered with a watering-can and precious tap water in another hot summer. If you have too big a space to fill for your garden budget, you could think about propagating some of this summer’s winners. Repeating plants throughout the garden is good design practice. Herbaceous perennials could be lifted and divided, then re-planted as soon as we have plenty of rain again. Save the seed of the ‘volunteers’ that sow themselves everywhere, in a paper envelope in a sealed

storage box in the fridge. However, a visit to a good nursery if you have lots of empty spaces is a continual temptation. Those lovely new plants that have been brought home should be watered and held until the rains have returned. Or if not, and your soil is still rock hard, make your life easier by throwing bowls of ‘washing-up

water’ just where the plants are to go, every night for a week, to soften the soil. Then ‘puddle’ in the plants – dig them in with another bucket of washing-up water. Then they stand a chance of working their roots into the newly dampened soil. And keep your fingers crossed for a wet winter. We surely need one.

Can you help find these big guys a home? by JACQUI BUDD St Giles Animal Welfare

L

ARGER breed dogs often take longer to find their forever homes. Which is why I would like to focus on three dogs at St Giles whose forever homes have so far eluded them: Stormzy, a Labrador x Mastiff; Gloria, a Cane Corso x mastiff; and Gromit, a German shepherd x Staffie. Many animals find the kennel environment stressful, even with the love given by the staff and volunteers. Nothing beats a quiet, familiar and stable environment. Which is what these three eagerly seek. Let me tell you a little about them. Stormzy has been at the centre a long time. Although good looking and fun-loving by nature, he has been overlooked. He is not going to be able to settle straight into a home. He will need a patient human who can make this process a gradual one. He has had a sad past and

Could you give, from left, Gloria, Stormzy, or Gromit a new home?

needs a special family who will allow him time to adjust and get to know them. Gloria is four and a half. She weighs 47kg, but despite her size she is a gentle soul. She has much love to give to the right family, preferably a family who understand large dogs. She finds the kennel environment

overwhelming. Gromit is a handsome fella. Before St Giles he found the world a scary place and even now he is wary. His mentor, Jack says his motto is “bark first, think later”: barking is a natural way for dogs to express their anxiety. He is doing well with his training and has much

potential. He will make a devoted companion for a lucky human. Could you have one of these dogs names engraved on your heart? For more information about Stormzy, Gloria and Gromit, visit stgilesanimalwelfare.co.uk/ adoptions.
