Clarks Village CEO Archie hard at work...

CLARKS Village's canine executive officer (CEO) was on the job recently - visiting the Street outlet centre to oversee operations.

Archie, the golden miniature dachshund, took the lead at the Somerset shopping venue as part of his paw-fficial role.

The one-year-old pup landed the job after winning a public vote as part of Clarks Village’s Pawsome Pooch competition last year.

Archie has since been performing his high-level, tail-wagging duties at the outlet, including auditing the best scents in the gardens, sniffing out the tastiest treats, inspecting water bowls, and implementing a strict pawshake policy when meeting guests.

Mike Jones, centre director at Clarks Village, said: "We’re incredibly dog-friendly here at Clarks Village and are proud to have our very own Canine

Executive Officer to make sure things stay that way. Archie is a fur-bulous member of the team, and he is always welcome, particularly as we get ready for this year’s Pawsome Pooch."

The next Pawsome Pooch dog-celebratory event will be held at Clarks Village on Saturday and Sunday,

September 12 and 13, when guests can expect a weekend of pup-tastic fun and free activities, including pooch pampering, dog tricks and agility, a pet illustrator, and a new ‘dog walk’ event.

The event will also feature free professional pet photo shoots, with each participant

receiving a free digital pawtrait and being entered into a competition to follow Archie and become the next canine executive officer, as well as having the chance to win a prize package worth up to £500.

Bridgwater Docks overhaul - including new moorings and bridge - a step closer

BRIDGWATER Docks is set to be transformed after plans to overhaul the landmark site were approved.

Somerset Council has given the green light to plans submitted as part of the Bridgwater Vision, which aims to encourage tourism and economic opportunities, as well as improving civic pride in the town and deliver an improved Active Travel route.

The North Area Planning Committee approved the change of use of the docks to introduce residential and leisure moorings, as well as new secure entrances and pontoons, the creation of an active travel route, removal and

Man

replacement of the modern Newton Lock swing bridge, repairs to the bascule bridge, landscaping and public realm works and engineering works in the basin.

Councillor Mike Rigby, lead member for economic development, planning and assets, said: “We are looking to enhance a key landmark of the town, and to help safeguard its important heritage that is fundamental to the interpretation of the industrial history of the town.

“In the past the Docks were the commercial heartbeat of the town, and we hope that this project will help to breathe new life into the area to provide a

sustainable future that supports new commercial investment, improves the local environment and respects the needs of the many and varied users including local residents.

“Our vision is to make the Docks a place people want to visit, enjoy and experience a part of Bridgwater’s industrial history.”

The project is one of 11 schemes falling under the umbrella of Bridgwater Town Deal that received £23.2 million to regenerate and modernise the town centre.

The scheme includes proposed seating areas, interpretation boards and a glazed viewing case to the

bascule bridge lifting gear. Pontoons will be reinstated and refurbished to provide 23 residential and 10 leisure moorings, while security entrances will be provided for boat users, along with equipment for servicing and safety.

Bridgwater Docks were opened in 1841 and remained operational until 1971. They are currently out of use and a permanent lock separates the tidal Basin from the River Parrett. As part of the plans, new walking and cycling routes will extend across a new swing bridge at Newton Lock, while lighting will be improved along with landscaping.

abused ex-wife over four-year period, court hears

A SOMERSET man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting controlling or coercive behaviour towards his partner over a period of more than four years.

David Rogers, of Norton Sub Hamdon, admitted the charge at Yeovil Magistrates' Court on Monday, July 20.

Rogers was handed a 20-month prison sentence,

suspended for 18 months, in relation to behaviour towards his ex-wife, following his arrest in February 2024.

He was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, 15 rehabilitation activity days, and to complete an accredited rehabilitation program for 26 days.

A five-year restraining order was also granted, ordering

Rogers not to contact his former partner or her children in that time.

Speaking after the sentencing hearing, the victim said "no sentence can change what we went through".

"I’d like to thank the people in my life for the support through all of this," they added, calling the whole experience "horrendous".

Burglars jailed after being caught on doorbell camera during Yeovil raid

BURGLARS Wayne

Shortland and Lewis Coombes have been jailed after being caught stealing electrical items and cash – by a doorbell camera.

Doorbell camera footage was used to identify Shortland, 43, from Yeovil, and 38-year-old Coombes, of Castle Cary, after they burgled a property in South Street, Yeovil, in the early hours of March 22.

They both stolen various items, including two electronic games consoles, cash, and other items which have not been recovered.

Coombes was arrested several hours after the offences were committed and was arrested, charged and remanded

into custody before his appearance at Taunton Crown Court on May 22.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 36 months in prison for burglary, separate offences of theft and assault, as well as the breach of a Criminal

Behaviour Order (CBO) and the terms of a suspended sentence he was subject to.

Shortland was arrested during the evening of April 29 and charged with the burglary, one theft from a motor vehicle, and four separate shop thefts.

He was charged and remanded into custody to appear at Taunton Crown Court on July 10, where he pleaded guilty to and was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

PC Jim Card, officer in the case, said: “We welcome the sentence handed to these prolific burglars, and we hope their victims can take some comfort following the harm and distressed caused by their offending. Burglary is an invasive crime which can have a significant impact on victims, not just in terms of financial and sentimental loss, but it can also make people feel unsafe in their own homes, and we urge people to continue reporting such incidents.”

Planters make way for new street furniture

NEW planters are set to bloom in Bridgwater – with older street furniture being relocated to brighten other areas of the town centre.

Large round planters previously located in Eastover have been moved to Clare Street and Angel Crescent ahead of the installation of new street furniture – including planters.

Bridgwater Town Council said the planters would “continue to provide greenery and enhance the public realm” in their new home, with more seating and planting being

installed in Eastover in response to comments from businesses, residents and visitors.

BTC said the new planters and seating have been chosen to “reflect feedback from local business, residents and visitors and form part of ongoing efforts to create a more welcoming, attractive and vibrant town centre environment, encouraging people to spend time in the area and support local businesses”.

Councillor Tim Mander,

chair of the Amenities Committee, added: “We’re pleased to be bringing new planters and benches to

Eastover as part of our commitment to improving public spaces across the town.

“The existing planters have been successfully relocated to Angel Crescent and Clare Street, ensuring they continue to add colour and character to another part of the community.

“We believe the new planters and benches will create a more appealing, comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone who uses the area.

"We look forward to unveiling the improvements very soon.”

Frome quarry - closed since the 1980s - set to reopen in 2027

CONDITIONS to reopen a huge Somerset quarry have been agreed.

Heidelberg Materials UK has agreed conditions for approval with Somerset Council to bring Westdown quarry, near Frome, back into use.

The site has lain dormant since the 1980s, with the council previously approving reopening of the scheme, subject to conditions which have now been agreed.

It means work will now begin at the 160 million-tonne limestone quarry to bring it back into operation by the end of 2027.

Once fully operational, the quarry will focus on supplying local demand, with nearby rail-connected Whatley quarry focusing on supplying national markets by rail, Heidelberg said.

Trystan Mabbitt, consenting and development manager at Heidelberg Materials UK, said:

“Finalising the Section 106 agreement with Somerset Council is the culmination of seven years of work to secure much-needed supplies of limestone.

“Looking ahead, there is still a lot to be done ahead of Westdown being fully operational. We are now

preparing the relevant management plans and licenses needed to allow us to discharge planning conditions, appoint contractors and prepare the site.”

The Westdown quarry scheme will see the site operate within its former boundary, and includes the retention of hedgerows and woodland on the edge of the site.

Native broadleaved trees and shrubs on the screening bunds will be planted for ecological enhancements, the firm said, along with the upfront creation of 44 acres of additional habitat of connected woodland and

grassland.

“Our successful application is based on reopening the quarry using modern practices and providing a progressive and final restoration plan,” Mr Mabbitt added.

“Combined aggregate volumes for both Whatley and Westdown quarries will remain the same as the current permitted levels for Whatley, which will focus on supplying national demand by rail.

“This approach will help to cut carbon emissions and keep HGVs away from local villages and reflects our commitment to being a good neighbour.”

Tractor badly damaged by fire on busy Wincanton route

A TRACTOR was badly damaged by fire on a busy road on Friday (July 24).

Firefighters were sent to the scene, on West Hill, Wincanton, at shortly after 8.30am to reports of a tractor ablaze.

Police were also sent to the site, on the roundabout with the

A371, to control traffic.

The burnt out shell of the tractor was still in the road at 9.30am as traffic navigated around it.

A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said a crew from Wincanton repsonded to reports

of "smoke coming from underneath the cab".

"On arrival, the tractor was well alight, and crews immediately got to work using two breathing apparatus (BA) wearers and two hose reel jets (HRJs) to bring the fire under control," they added.

Bridgwater student who 'attracted ridicule' at school graduates with a First in law

ASOMERSET student

who underwent a triple amputation as a child after contracting meningitis has graduated from university with a law degree – and hit out at the bullies who targeted her and those who failed to support her.

Natasha Dines, from Bridgwater, said she had experienced bullying as she grew up and that school was “a deeply unhappy experience” which left her feeling “completely overlooked”.

Now, she is celebrating having graduated from her law degree at UWE Bristol with a First. Natasha, 22, was just six months old when she contracted meningitis, which left her with 80% skin grafts and as a triple amputee resulting in no lower legs and no right hand.

Her right arm is still functional, and she can walk freely on her upper legs. But he said the effects of her illness meant she struggled through her childhood in school.

“School was a deeply unhappy experience for me. I seemed to attract attention when it came to ridicule, but when I needed help, I felt completely overlooked,” she said.

“Secondary school remains the darkest chapter of my life. I had little support and few, if any, genuine friendships.”

She applied through UCAS for a place on the BA (Hons) Business and Events Management course at UWE Bristol and was accepted.

“My foundation year was the best year as I made amazing friends, explored my interests, discovered if university was for me and found my purpose,” she went on.

However, being familyoriented, coupled with her strong ambition to help others and her enjoyment of the law module during her Business Management course, led her to switch courses to study Law.

“It wasn’t until I took a law module that I found something that truly fascinated me. I considered switching, but as I was already halfway through the year, I decided to stay, achieved a high 2:1, received brilliant feedback that I still cherish today and then transferred to law at the end of the year.”

While at UWE Bristol, Natasha got involved in several communities including the Law Society and Bristol Law School and took part in multiple extra-curricular activities, including speaking on panels, speaking in a lecture hall about her life as a student, and providing campus tours as a student ambassador.

She also said she found support from fellow peers and staff, including the Disability Students’ Allowances (DSA) team and her advisers.

Natasha said: “They were on hand to help her with concerns or questions on anything from timetable and attendance issues to disability issues, money and travel to specific staff at the university.”

Praising the support from the note-taker who helped her in lessons, Natasha said: “Alexa Deane is the best women I’ve ever met and forever my favourite, she’s been my absolute staple, and I could not have achieved this without her.

“Rachel Wood and Emma Whewell are also two lecturers

who have been extremely helpful and supportive and made me feel very special. Knowing I wanted to pursue family law, Emma, who is a family law lecturer, showed belief in me and encouraged me to choose family and clinic in my final year.”

Having collected her degree,

Natasha thanked her family and friends for their support.

“They have done so much for me, my mum and nan encouraged me and never let me give up,” she said. "My nan took me to university for the last four years and I am eternally grateful for them for their help and support.”

She added: “No matter what disability you have it doesn’t matter, if you want this, then go for it and don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do.”

She is now considering multiple offers from other universities to do a Master of Law course, as well as securing further work experience for her Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) at a criminal law firm in Highbridge, and is awaiting a decision for an apprenticeship.

Homes plan for former village care home

AFORMER care home in a Somerset village near Bridgwater could be converted into five homes, if plans are approved.

Lone Wolf Planning, on behalf of Farrington Care Homes Ltd, has applied to Somerset Council for permission to change the use of the former Wellfield House care home, in Manor Road, Catcott.

Comprised of two separate buildings, the main structure was formerly the residential care home, with a two-storey property providing staff accommodation.

The site was converted into a care home in 1987, but was deregistered in 2024, following a failed planning bid to convert it into temporary accommodation for Hinkley Point C workers.

Now, the fresh scheme proposed creating five

properties across the two buildings, alongside amenity areas, parking and bin storage.

Two one-bed homes, two two-bed homes and a three-bed home are proposed for the plot.

“It is anticipated that plots 1 to 3 will be attractive to older people (single or couples) or single people looking to downsize or find accommodation near to family,” the application said.

It said plot 4 may be of interest to “a young family”, featuring two parking spaces, while plot 5 may also appeal to a young couple “looking to get on the housing ladder locally”, and also has two parking spaces.

Featuring “very limited external changes”, the plans said the development would be a “proportionate addition to a village of some 230 dwellings”.

“The proposed conversion of

19 Manor Road into five dwellings offers a high-quality, sustainable housing solution for Catcott,” the application concluded.

“By making efficient use of existing high-quality buildings within the development boundary, the proposal aligns with the National Planning Policy Framework’s objectives for housing delivery, reuse of previously developed land, and support for sustainable communities.

“It contributes to addressing shortfall in housing supply in the former Sedgemoor area and responds to the housing needs of older residents and smaller households in the village.”

Father who shook baby to death gets life

TONY Bartlett – who shook his four-week-old baby son to death at the family home in Chard – has been jailed for life.

The 39-year-old, of Axminster in Devon, caused severe injuries to baby Atticus during an incident after a night out with the child’s mother.

Earlier this month, Bartlett was convicted by a jury following a trial at Bristol Crown Court and has now been sentenced at the same court to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years.

The pair had returned from a night out on July 16, 2022, when bartlett was left alone downstairs feeding his son, described in court as “fit and healthy”.

When Atticus’ mother returned from upstairs, she found her son looking “lifeless” and taking his last unassisted breaths.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals and neighbours, Atticus could not be saved.

He was rushed to hospital, first in Somerset before being transferred to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where he sadly died a week later.

He was found to have suffered severe internal injuries to his brain, spinal cord and ribs, with medical experts concluding the injuries were in keeping with recent severe head trauma and were “at the most severe end of the spectrum”.

At the sentencing, Judge Mr Justice Cavanagh praised neighbours for their efforts in trying to save Atticus.

He recognised how traumatic this had been for Atticus’ family, and added: “Atticus should have had a long and happy life – his life was ended before it really began.

“He was very much loved and cherished during his very short life.”

Mr Justice Cavanagh

accepted that Bartlett’s actions were neither planned or pre-meditated, but an act of sudden anger. He also said Bartlett had been a “loving parent” before.

Addressing Bartlett, he added: “Atticus died as a result of very violent shaking by you.

“This terrible tragedy would not have happened if you were not so heavily intoxicated.

"You had a sudden fit of anger and vented that anger on your tiny baby son. In that brief moment you wanted to cause Atticus really serious injury.”

He added: “Nobody is more vulnerable and reliant on others than a blameless one-month-old baby. He could not stand up for himself…

“Atticus was in your sole care when you assaulted him.”

After the hearing, Det Sgt Sarah Bowden, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Tony Bartlett was alone with Atticus when he suffered these horrendous injuries and the medical evidence gathered during the investigation proves he was solely responsible for causing them, despite his claims of innocence.

“This is a devastating case in which a very young baby has lost his life as the direct result of a cruel act by a man who was supposed to provide him with the protection and care he needed.

“The loss of Atticus has had a profound effect on all those who loved him.

"Our thoughts are very much with Atticus’ family who’ve had to endure a lengthy and complex police investigation, followed by a trial. They’ve shown great dignity and courage throughout.

“Investigations like this are extremely harrowing and I’d like to thank all those who provided evidence and supported our investigation to establish the facts behind Atticus’ tragic death.”

New buses will link with Castle Cary trains

A NEW bus service linking Glastonbury and Street with train services from Castle Cary is launching in the coming weeks.

The 567 service, which will be operated by Somerset Council, aims to tie up travel from the towns to the station, allowing people to ensure they make their train while using public transport.

The service is due to run seven days a week from August 3, using a low-floor, accessible minibus, alongside the 667 service which already runs from Street to Castle Cary station. The 567 will connect with

trains to and from: London, Exeter, Plymouth, Paignton, Salisbury, Weymouth and Gloucester.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for transport and waste services, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide this trial service linking Glastonbury and Street to train services at Castle Cary. We’re grateful to our partners, GWR and Clarks Village, for their help in promoting the new route.

“It will be good for Somerset businesses, including Clarks Village which is a popular destination for local people and

visitors from further afield.

“Hopefully it will prove popular, as it gives people the choice to leave their car at home and save money.

“The route needs to be sustainable in the long term and well used, so we need people to make the most of it. Arrival and departure times at Castle Cary Station to and from London have been set to ensure there is a sufficient gap between bus and train arrivals and departures to support reliable connections.”

Consideration is also being given to introducing a return journey using the Somerton Slinky service from Somerton

and Langport, linking with a train departure from Castle Cary to London in the morning peak, with a direct return journey in the evening peak back to Somerton and Langport.

The council said those journeys must be pre-booked by passengers through the Somerton Slinky Service.

During off-peak hours, passengers will be able to book the Somerton Slinky (subject to availability) to connect with the 567 at Keinton Mandeville for travel to and from Castle Cary station, giving the Langport and Somerton areas a link to the station at key times.

Tats for Cats scheme means your ink will benefit felines in need: Here's where...

ATRIO of Somerset tattoo studios in Somerset will be opening their doors to raise money for cats in need.

Iris Ink Studios in Radstock, Blunt Tattoo in Bath, and Arcturus Tattoos in Yeovil are donating their time and expertise for flash fundraising days - when 50% of proceeds from tattoos will be donated to the Cats Protection charity.

It comes as the animal welfare organisation warned of rising numbers of animals being handed to rehoming charities.

Laura Taylor, Cats Protection community fundraising officer, said: "Every year the number of pregnant cats and unwanted kittens arriving in the charity’s care starts to increase steadily from spring into summer, peaking between June and September.

"It is not only a challenging time for the expectant mothers and their young, but also for our teams who care for them, especially when unwanted litters are found abandoned or brought in without their mum and require 24-hour care.

"The flash days will not only provide funding for food and vet care for kittens and pregnant cats being looked after by our volunteers across Somerset, but will also help cover neutering costs to prevent the cycle from starting again."

Laura said a donation of £60 from the tattoo event will cover the cost of neutering a cat or kitten in charity care, preventing unwanted litters from being born and providing a lifetime of health benefits to male and female cats alike.

Iris Ink Studios and Blunt Tattoos will be raising money for Cats Protection Midsomer Norton & Radstock.

Each studio will be creating tattoos from pre-designed flash sheets and ID must be provided on the day.

One family of cats who will benefit from the event is two-year-old Mila and her nine-week-old kittens Daisy, Rose, Monty and Dom, at Cats Protection Midsomer Norton & Radstock.

Torby Mila was found with the kittens in a garden shed

when they were just a few weeks old.

"Thankfully they were found by the shed’s owner and taken into the branch’s care, however the outcome could have been very different if they had not been found," a spokesperson said. "They could have overheated in the shed or the kittens could have been discovered by a predator while Mila was out finding food."

Having received plenty of TLC, the kittens will soon be advertised on the branch’s website - www.cats.org.uk/ midsomer - when they are ready for adoption and Mila will follow suit once she's neutered.

Air ambulance doc helps break rowing world record

AN RAF doctor who works alongside the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA) has helped set a new Guinness World Record as part of a team taking on one of the world’s toughest rowing challenges.

Felix Wood, an RAF emergency medicine doctor and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance clinician, was part of Team ROWMADS, which rowed more than 2,000 miles around the coastline of Great Britain as part of the 2026 GB Row Challenge.

The five-person crew set off from Tower Bridge on June 14 and completed the non-stop, unsupported challenge in 32 days, 30 minutes and 58 seconds, becoming the fastest five-person crew to row around Great Britain.

Throughout the challenge, Felix has been fundraising for

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, a charity close to his heart following his time working alongside the team.

“My personal highlight was a close encounter with an orca in the far north of Scotland and the low point has to be our soaking wet cabin during a storm in the Irish Sea,” he said.

“Throughout, the thought that we were raising money for worthwhile causes close to each of our hearts kept us pushing on through the tough times.

“Just like at DSAA we were only able to complete the mission due to strong teamwork and pulling together to a common goal.

“Knowing that my DSAA colleagues were following our progress on the GPS tracker also provided a little extra motivation.”

Alongside the physical and mental demands of the row, the

challenge has an important scientific purpose, with Team ROWMADS collecting data on water temperature, water quality and pollution, while supporting research into physiological adaptation, sleep and smallteam dynamics.

“After 32 days at sea, we were the third fastest crew ever to row round Great Britain unsupported and we’ve also taken home a Guinness world record for the fastest five person crew,” Felix went on.

“In addition, we collected over 100 samples to test for microplastics and environmental DNA as well as 750 hours of hydrophone recordings to be analysed for marine mammals.

“We’ve also collected blood tests, saliva samples, interviews and performed exercise testing and bone scans to see the effect this trip has had on our bodies and minds.

Charlotte Humber, supporter engagement officer at DSAA, added: “We are so proud of Felix and Team ROWMADS for completing such a demanding challenge and setting a new world record in the process.

“It means a great deal that Felix has chosen to support Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance in this way, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has donated so far.

“Their incredible commitment has helped shine a spotlight on the vital work we do, and we hope their achievement will inspire even more people to support our lifesaving service.”

The Team ROWMADS fundraising page remains open, and anyone wishing to support Felix or his teammates can do so at https://gvwhl.com/ CZN9A.

New system bathes bandstand in light from dusk 'til dawn

THE bandstand in Bridgwater's Blake Gardens will be illuminated at dusk each day thanks to new decorative lighting.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the new lighting as the sun goes down each day, as the system is designed to

switch on automatically, turning off again at dawn.

Bridgwater Town Council said the lighting is electric and has been designed with durability in mind, with bulbs made from plastic rather than glass, making them far less likely to break if struck.

Councillor Tim Mander, chair of Bridgwater Town Council's Amenities Committee, said: "The bandstand is a much-loved feature of Blake Gardens and these new lights will help showcase it throughout the year."

PM in Somerset for first official visit after taking office

NEW Prime Minister Andy Burnham's first official visit since taking the top job was to Somerset.

The PM was in Bath on Wednesday, July 22, where he met the West of England Mayor Helen Godwin at the First Bus depot.

It came as the new Labour leader announced he was returning the bus fare cap across England to £2.

Mayor Godwin said: "It was brilliant to welcome our new Prime Minister to Bath so early in his premiership, and to show off some of our new green buses.

"It was even better to hear that the £2 bus fare cap will be

reintroduced for adult journeys.

"This is really welcome news for passengers across the West Country, building on moneysaving initiatives like Kids Go Free - which is rolling out nationally this August following our successful regional pilot over the last year."

Kids Go Free sees children able to take bus journeys for free during summer, Easter and Christmas school holidays in the mayoral region.

Out of the holiday seasons, children's bus fares are capped at £1 until at least 2029.

Announcing the return of the £2 fare cap, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said: "Good, affordable transport links are an essential. No one

should be priced out of those and left behind.

"But for too long people have said that cheaper transport isn’t an option. I don’t accept that. I’ve done it before and I will do it again now: a £2 cap on bus fares for millions across the country.

"Lower fares will help people get to where they need to –giving them breathing space to help with the cost of living.

"As I said on my first day in office – I will build a country for everyone, everywhere. That means more connected communities, better access to opportunities, and a lighter load on people’s lives."

Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, said: "We are

capping bus fares at £2 for everyone throughout 2027, slashing fares by a third for millions of people, to help give them the breathing space they need.

"This action to ease the cost of living is funded by savings made elsewhere, so there’s no burden to British taxpayers, just pounds going back into their pockets."

And Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander added: "This is about making those everyday journeys easier and cheaper. We’re cutting fares by a third to help with the cost of living, open up opportunities and keep people connected to work, school, healthcare and their friends and family."

No arrests during illegal immigration demo

MORE than 100 police officers were in Taunton to monitor a protest over immigration - though a right-wing leader touted as attending was not there.

A group of around 150 protestors took to the streets to protest 'illegal immigration', processing through the town centre on Saturday afternoon (July25).

However, as well as their numbers being almost matched by police, a counter protest

against the march outnumbered them, with around 250 people turning out.

Rumours prior to the march that controversial right-wing activist Paul Golding, leader of the Britain First group, would attend the protest proved unfounded.

After the event, police said the "protest and counter-protest passed without incident and no arrests were made".

"Around 110 officers were utilised during

today’s protest, including some officers from neighbouring forces," an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

"They enabled a peaceful protest and ensured both the safety of the protest and counter-protestors as well as the public."

They thanked the community for their "patience and understanding", including those affected when "traffic had to be temporarily held" during the march.

Arrest, vehicles seized and stolen trailer recovered during Mendip police operation

THREE vehicles were seized, a stolen trailer recovered and one person arrested during a special operation in the Mendip Hills.

Avon & Somerset Police joined forces with rangers from the Mendip Hills National Landscape in a bid to tackle rural and road crime during the operation, on July 17.

Community intelligence was used to identify a mix of offences and involved neighbourhood policing teams, mounted officers, roads policing units, off-road motorcyclists, response vehicles and two vehicle examiners, an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

“As part of the operation, all towing vehicles were stopped and checked for compliance,” they said.

“In one instance, an untaxed

vehicle was initially identified before officers soon discovered the horse trailer it was towing had been stolen.”

In total, proactive efforts from police and partners in the Mendips resulted in:

* 87 vehicle checks

* Four vehicles stopped following community reporting

* Three vehicles seized for motoring offences (e.g. no insurance, no tax, dangerous vehicle condition)

* The recovery of a stolen trailer

* One person arrested and investigated for drink/drug driving

* A trailer prohibited from further use due to defective brakes

* A commercial lorry prohibited from further use until taxed

* One mobile phone offence reported

* One red-light offence reported

“While key enforcement was taking place on the rural road network, mounted and neighbourhood officers spoke to residents, local businesses, landowners and visitors to the Mendip Hills in Priddy, the Mineries, Blackdown, Wavering Down, Crook Peak, Hinton Charterhouse and surrounding communities,” they went on.

“This provided reassurance and the opportunity to report issues directly to police – from rural offending and vehiclerelated crime to fly-tipping and illegal waste activity spoiling the countryside.”

PC Mark Hicks, operation lead, added: “This operation highlights the power of

community reporting. Thanks to information received from local people, we were able to identify and respond to offences quickly, keep our roads safe, hold perpetrators to account, and protect businesses that operate within the law. Rest assured, this was not a one-off operation, and we’ll continue to work with our rural partners to disrupt offending in and around Somerset communities.

“We are grateful to Mendip residents’ continued vigilance and encourage any further concerns or information to be reported to your local neighbourhood policing team – either online, via 101, or at your closest police enquiry office.”

Business, legal & finance

ASOMERSET haulage firm has had its licence revoked after its director and transport manager carried out “serious and deliberate falsification of driver records”.

During a public inquiry in Bristol, Traffic Commissioner Kevin Rooney heard how Andrew Tucker – sole director, transport manager and driver for TMA Haulage Ltd, based near Bath – had used a former employee’s driver card on multiple occasions during 2025 and 2026.

Mr Tucker initially denied allegations during an interview under caution but later accepted he had been driving while another driver’s card was inserted in the vehicle unit.

The investigation was launched by DVSA following intelligence suggesting drivers at the company were using a second card to avoid drivers’ hours requirements.

Analysis of vehicle unit data identified repeated misuse of a driver card belonging to former employee, Bradley Baulf.

The Traffic Commissioner found Mr Tucker had falsified records by using Mr Baulf’s card on three occasions in June and July 2025 and repeated the misconduct again in April this year.

As a result, the Commissioner determined Mr Tucker had lost his good repute as a transport manager and ordered his indefinite

disqualification from acting as a transport manager.

TMA Haulage’s operator licence was immediately curtailed from five vehicles to four and the Commissioner found the business no longer met the requirements for professional competence and effective management.

The licence was revoked, although a period of grace until October 6 was granted to allow the appointment of a suitably qualified replacement transport manager.

A further revocation order based on loss of good repute will also take effect on October 6, unless Mr Tucker is removed as a statutory director, replaced by an individual able to

Wells toy shop closing down after 28 years

A LANDMARK Somerset shop is closing down - after 28 years.

Kids Stuff Wells has announced it is closing down, with the owners choosing to retire.

The toy shop, in Queen Street, is shutting up shop after more than two decades.

"It’s with great sadness that we have decided to close our beloved toy shop down and retire," the shop said on social media.

"We have 25% off everything and all stock and shop fittings must go.

"Thank you to all our customers over the past 28 years."

Customers have reacted with sadness to the news, with one saying: "Your shop is part of the fabric of Wells and won’t be the same without you.

"I wish you a long and happy retirement to you both."

demonstrate genuine control of the business, and his shareholding is reduced to no more than 50%.

The public inquiry also considered the conduct of Mr Tucker and former driver Bradley Baulf as vocational licence holders, with the Commissioner revoking Mr Tucker’s LGV entitlement for 12 months, while Mr Baulf’s vocational entitlement was revoked indefinitely.

In his decision, the Traffic Commissioner concluded the repeated use of another driver’s tachograph card represented “serious and deliberate falsification of records, striking at the heart of the drivers’ hours enforcement regime”.

Cautious welcome from Somerset business groups for 20% rates cut in hospitality

AMONG the first policies announced by new Prime Minister Andy Burnham was a 20% cut in business rates for pubs, clubs and smaller live music venues.

The change will apply to hospitality venues in England from April next year, Number 10 announced.

The move has been welcomed by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce and Visit Somerset, which represents the county’s tourism and leisure sectors.

However, the two business organisations said the measures do not go far enough and are calling for wider reform to support businesses across all sectors facing ongoing cost pressures.

David Crew, managing director of the Chamber, and Giles Adams, chair of Visit Somerset, said: "The announcement of a 20% reduction in business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues is welcome recognition of the pressures facing those sectors.

"However, there are many other businesses across hospitality and the wider economy that continue to face significant cost challenges.

"It has been widely trailed in recent weeks that the new Prime

Minister sees hospitality and venues as a priority, so in many ways this is a welcome but predictable move.

"And while this announcement is welcome, we must avoid resorting to headline-grabbing measures if we are serious about supporting a sustainable visitor economy. Businesses need meaningful, long-term reform that drives growth and investment.

"Businesses have navigated years of economic disruption, rising energy costs, inflationary pressures and wider global uncertainty. While targeted support is positive, the need for wider business rates reform remains."

They said the visitor economy in Somerset - worth around £1.3 billion a year,

accounts for around 7% of the county economy and supports approximately 24,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

"It is a vital sector for our county and one that requires much greater attention if it is to reach its full potential," they added.

"This week's announcement on removing VAT from domestic electricity bills has demonstrated that Government is prepared to look again at tax measures where there is a compelling economic case.

"A reduction in VAT for visitor economy businesses would be a genuinely transformative change for a sector that badly needs support and needs it urgently.

"Many firms continue to identify business rates as a

growing concern, particularly in hospitality, manufacturing and transport. Any action to reduce that burden is welcome, but businesses will be looking for further detail on how the Government intends to deliver its wider commitment to reform the system.

"It is important that forthcoming changes, including the next revaluation, do not result in steep increases in bills for businesses in other sectors. Firms need a system that is simpler, fairer and easier to understand.

"This announcement is a step in the right direction, but businesses of all sizes will want to see a clear and comprehensive plan for business rates reform set out in the Autumn Budget."

Police listen to businesses in bid to tackle Bridgwater problems

BUSINESS was at the heart of a special day of action by police in Bridgwater.

Avon & Somerset Police, alongside Bridgwater Town Council, Somerset Council, addiction support services and agencies working with rough sleepers, were in the town centre on July 1, hearing first-hand from shoppers, retailers and

visitors about issues affecting the area.

The event was organised following a rise in complaints from residents and businesses regarding anti-social behaviour, street drinking, shoplifting and suspected drug-related activity.

Officers and partner agencies spoke to traders about the challenges they face, gathered intelligence

and discussed the support available to individuals experiencing addiction and homelessness.

Councillor Tim Mander, chair of Bridgwater Town Council's Police Forum, said: "It was good to engage and speak with shoppers and retailers and really get a feeling for the lived experience which, at times, is very challenging."

Long-standing weight restriction on M48

Severn Bridge to be removed by early 2027

WEIGHT restrictions on the M48 Severn Bridge crossing are set to be removed by early 2027 after highways chiefs identified a solution to tackle the number of HGVs using the route.

National Highways has devised a scheme which will see the number of HGVs on the crossing at any one time monitored – controlled by traffic signals – meaning the bridge will be fully reopened to vehicles weighing over 7.5 tonnes.

The plan would see HGVs leave the M48 at Junction 1 (westbound) and Junction 2 (eastbound) via slip roads, with re-entry controlled by signals on the on-slips, returning to the route.

Bosses said it could mean the

bridge is reopened to vehicles over 7.5t 24-hours a day, and would operate in ‘free-flow’ for “the vast majority of the time”.

“Following engagement with local authorities and businesses on proposals, this is a preferred solution for the medium-term, while longer term options are explored by National Highways,” a spokesperson said.

“The latest traffic modelling also shows that there will be no longer be a requirement to restrict HGVs travelling eastbound during the morning peak, which will have large benefits for the people and businesses in the Chepstow area and beyond.

“To make sure the new system is robust and works as intended, National Highways

needs to carry out additional tests and checks, delaying the planned implementation.”

Alan Feist, programme manager for National Highways, added: “The solution we have identified to enable us to lift the weight restriction on the bridge is innovative and requires extensive testing and quality checks so that we can be confident the system operates safely and properly.

“To enable enough time for us to carry out the essential testing and safety audits, we plan to introduce the system in January, a little later than originally planned.

“Once in place, we’ll be able to lift the weight restriction for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes by managing the number of HGVs using the bridge whilst still ensuring the safety of the bridge is protected.”

The M48 Severn Bridge is Grade I listed and almost 60 years old.

Its position means it is

exposed to hostile weather conditions all year round which has contributed to the corrosion of the cables, National Highways said.

“The bridge was not designed and built for today’s levels or weight of traffic,” a spokesperson went on.

“Vehicles have got heavier and traffic levels have increased significantly over the last 60 years putting greater load on the cables.

“Routine survey work and testing found that the main cables on the bridge have deteriorated and weakened.

“To keep the bridge open to the majority of traffic we needed to reduce the load on these cables, which has meant removing the heaviest vehicles for the time being.”

A 7.5t weight limit was put in place in May last year for the Severn Bridge, for an estimated 12 to 18 months dependent on further investigations, with heavier vehicles using the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge to cross the Severn Estuary – a diversion of 14 miles.

The proposed solution is intended as a medium-term fix, National Highways said, as investigations into longer-term requirements continue.

Warning over batteries in the bin after eight fires in 2026

RESIDENTS have been warned again over the dangers of putting batteries in the bin.

Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has called on households to 'think before they throw' following a rise in incidents involving lithium-ion batteries, which can cause serious fires when incorrectly disposed of in general waste.

Lithium-ion batteries - found in items including mobile phones, laptops, vapes, e-scooters, e-bikes, power tools and children’s toys - can short circuit, overheat and ignite when damaged during collection or processing - putting waste crews, firefighters and everyone else at risk.

To highlight the issue, Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and roads, joined firefighters at the Material Recycling Facility in Evercreech, operated by waste contractor SUEZ, on Wednesday (July 22).

The visit highlighted the dangers caused when batteries and other hazardous items are placed in general waste, which

can put waste teams and emergency responders at risk.

Since January, the council said there had been eight fires in Somerset waste facilities, at either a waste depot or on a collection vehicle, with half caused by batteries and vapes which had been incorrectly disposed of.

Battery-related fires have occurred in SUEZ collection vehicles as well as at recycling facilities.

Kate Saint, head of prevention at Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Lithium-ion batteries are part of many products we use every day and, when used and disposed of correctly, they are safe. However, when damaged or crushed, they can ignite without warning.

"These fires spread rapidly, are challenging to deal with and put people’s lives at risk. Separating batteries and electrical items from general waste may seem like a small action, but it plays a vital role in preventing fires and protecting our communities."

Matthew Canning, SUEZ

contract director for Somerset, said: "The safety of our teams and our communities is our highest priority. Fires caused by incorrectly disposed lithium-ion batteries and other hazardous items pose a serious risk to our crews, and facilities.

"Waste fires can spread quickly due to the volume and variety of materials being processed, making them difficult to access and extinguish. This creates additional risks for our teams and emergency services.

"We’re asking residents to help protect our crews by disposing of batteries and electrical items through the correct recycling routes. A simple change can make a real difference in preventing dangerous fires."

And Cllr Wilkins added: "Keeping our communities safe and protecting our environment go hand in hand. Fires caused by incorrectly disposed batteries can put people at risk, disrupt essential services and harm the environment.

"By working with partners including Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and SUEZ, we can raise awareness

of this growing issue and encourage residents to make simple changes that protect our communities, waste crews and the environment."

Somerset residents are reminded to:

n Never place loose batteries or electrical items, including those containing batteries in general waste bins

n Use designated battery and vape recycling points, often available in supermarkets, or place them in a small, clear tied bag and leave on top of recycling boxes for kerbside collection.

n Take unwanted electrical items to local recycling centres

n Small electrical items (excluding monitors, TVs or microwaves) can be collected from the kerbside, they should be left in carrier bags for collection

n Residents can use the online lookup from Recycle Your Electricals for battery and electrical drop-off points. For more information on safely recycling lithium-ion batteries and electrical items, visit somerset.gov.uk/waste.

Property

Demand for projects!

ACOTTAGE in need of renovation - but offering "potential in abundance" - sold for £80,000 over its pre-sale estimate at a Somerset property auction.

The property, set in 1.5 acres at Isle Brewers near Taunton, was among lots at a busy Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) auction held at The Shrubberies, Ilminster.

A GTH spokesperson said bidding was competitive for a "varied catalogue of land, barns, equestrian facilities and renovation-ready cottages".

"Several lots exceeded expectations, reflecting continued demand for countryside opportunities and development potential," they said.

The headline result came from the period cottage set in 1.5 acres and described as offering “potential in abundance”.

Having been in the same family ownership for 100 years, the house, left, attracted a good deal of pre-sale interest, with 24 parties viewing the property.

Guided at £250,000, the property quickly became the focus of the room, with competitive bidding pushing the hammer price to £330,000 — £80,000 above the guide.

"Another notable sale was Culvercroft Farm in Stoke St Gregory, a period cottage with a range of outbuildings set within six acres," the spokesperson went on.

"Despite requiring complete renovation, the property achieved £400,000, underscoring the strong appetite for lifestyle holdings and rural restoration projects.

"Development potential also proved popular with Sedgemoor Farm in Butleigh Moor Drove, Walton, a traditional barn with planning permission for conversion.

"This sold for £245,000, drawing interest from buyers seeking to create bespoke rural homes."

Smaller parcels of land also performed well, they said, including 2.09 acres off Station Road, Buscott, Ashcott, which sold for £56,000.

Rounding off the auction was an equestrian facility at Coldharbour Farm, Donyatt, near Ilminster, comprising stables, an all-weather riding arena and pastureland extending to around 4.53 acres. It achieved £78,000, appealing to equestrian buyers and hobby farmers.

n The next similar auction is set for Wednesday, September 16, at Batch Country House, Lympsham, near Weston-super-Mare. Email auctions@gth.net, or visit gth.net, for more information.

Support is available to boost tree planting

ANYONE considering planting trees, shrubs, woodland, hedgerow, shelterbelt or screening could get support from a Somerset group this planting season.

Reimagining the Levels, a county Community Benefit Society, has supported the planting of around 135,000 trees over the past six years - and is offering to help people once again this year.

"We work in partnership with Somerset Rivers Authority delivering their natural flood management scheme via Trees for Water," a spokesperson said.

"We also have funds that can support individual landowners, farmers and community groups who wish to plant and enhance their land."

A spokesperson said the group was keen to hear from anyone who might be thinking of planting in 2026/27.

"We may be able to support

you with planning (selection of site and plants), supply you with strong healthy plants and protections and if applicable help you with a grant application. We try to make the whole process easy and enjoyable," they said.

"The county of Somerset has the lowest tree cover in the UK and the evidence of nature depletion is all around.

Increasing tree cover will improve immeasurably the environment and human health as they sequester carbon, remove greenhouse gases, trap pollutants, reduce soil erosion, mitigate flooding, provide habitats for wildlife and increase biodiversity, provide shade, food and strengthen our immune, hormonal, circulatory and nervous systems.

Reimagining the Levels helps facilitate new tree planting across Somerset

"We welcome enquiries from all parts of Somerset although we do not usually plant on the Levels as they are a natural flood plain absorbing and cleaning excess water plus holding reserves of peat."

n For more on Reimagining the Levels, visit reimaginingthelevels.org.uk, or email Kate Towers via katetowers.rtl@gmail.com.

How best to prune your apple trees this summer

AFTER such a glorious, but exceptionally hot, summer so far, the apple trees are almost ready to be summer pruned. Trees that are highly manipulated –cordons, espaliers and those shaped into fans and pyramids – benefit especially from summer pruning.

In an ordinary season this is usually left until mid-August, but this hot year in particular slightly early pruning will allow the wounds to heal properly and the tree to re-grow, albeit slowly, throughout the course of the remainder of the summer.

Unlike traditional winter pruning, summer pruning does not initiate the growth of lots of thin, green shoots, it allows air to circulate through the tree and lets the sun ripen the young shoots. It’s an essential job that can be done so well on warm evenings, with the aid of a large straw hat and pairs of sharp loppers and secateurs. The tree has the remainder of the summer to heal the wounds naturally. And in a hot summer, such as this one, it reduces the

BlackmoreCopyrightVale

amount of green leafy growth vulnerable to the drying effect of high temperatures and wind. Start by cutting back any vigorous shoots that are growing into the centre of the crown. This will keep the air circulating in the centre of the tree and help to ripen the fruiting shoots for next year.

Avoid cutting back short shoots less than 20cm long. They may well be in the course of forming new fruiting spurs for next year.

Remove the long, leafy new shoots that are growing from the existing side shoots to just one, or at most, two leaves above the existing side-shoot. This will encourage the formation of more fruiting spurs for next year.

If no heavy rain is forecast, ensure that the whole tree is very well watered with several cans, and if you have any damp garden compost, put it around the base of the tree without touching the bark. It should give it a short-term reservoir during those sunny spells.

And finally give the tree a long, liquid feed high in potash to encourage lots of fruit.

Unique environment open to the public

AUNIQUE piece of Somerset’s landscape is opening its gates to the public in August, celebrating a 30-year transformation from active landfill site into a thriving 100-acre wildlife haven.

Carymoor Environmental Trust, near Castle Cary, is marking its anniversary by hosting an exclusive Community Open Day on Saturday, August 8. Given the reserve's situation, a safely capped landfill site, it is normally closed to the general public.

So the Open Day represents a rare opportunity for local families, conservationists and supporters to come and experience three decades of rewilding success.

The upcoming Open Day is offering a packed timetable of family-friendly activities, guided tours and heritage craft demonstrations.

Landmark pub looking for new landlord

AHISTORIC 15th century freehouse near the site of the Glastonbury Festival is up for lease.

The Lion at Pennard, in West Pennard, is being marketed by Sidney Phillips with rent of some £48,000 per annum.

Situated off the A361 near Glastonbury, the pub boasts 12 en-suite rooms, as well as character flagstone bars and dining rooms, a skittles alley, tenant’s flat and a patio and large car park.

“The Lion at Pennard is a fine Grade II listed stone property of 15th century origins under a pitched pantile roof,” the listing said. “It has rear additions under a flat roof. There is a two-storey outbuilding which houses the skittle alley and additional letting accommodation.

“Over the course of the last decade, our clients have made significant investment in the property which is now in very good ‘turnkey’ condition.”

The Lion has been operated

“It is also a popular destination dining venue and customers drive from afar to eat there. The letting accommodation is well-used by tourists visiting nearby

by a third-party tenant since 2021, with the listing stating the venue is believed to turn over around £1.1 million each year.

“The business benefits from good local support from residents of the village and the surrounding areas,” it said.

attractions such as Glastonbury and Wells.

“The business achieves 100% occupancy around the time of the Glastonbury Festival and The Royal Bath & West Show. Rooms are also regularly booked by parents visiting

pupils at Millfield School.”

Current tenants are expected to leave in November, the details added, though could move sooner if required.

“We understand room bookings are already being confirmed for the 2027 Glastonbury Festival,” the listing went on. Following a formal viewing, seriously interested applicants may be given access to the tenant’s trading and profit and loss accounts.

“The Red Lion is an exceptionally well-run business and the freeholders are looking to install a new and experienced operator to continue to trade on the same trajectory.”
