OLYMPIAN OPENS NEW LIDO

Olympian Sharron opens new resort pool

OLYMPIC swimming legend

Sharron Davies officially opened a new lido at a Somerset holiday resort.

The former Team GB star was at the Unity Beach Resort, in Brean, to open the new £11 million development.

After cutting the ribbon, Sharron was given a tour of the new facilities - including the new Brean Water Park - by manager Kelly Podbury and met holidaymakers enjoying the new pools.

The development boasts a new lido with an outside pool area designed to host around 400 people, as well as a splash zone and leisure space for visitors. Alongside the water facilities, major investment in the Somerset park has also seen the development of a new Activity Barn, a Creative Arts Studio, relaxation zones and a dog agility area.

Residents are also able to use the facilities each afternoon for a small fee - space permitting.

Government warning over county finances

SOMERSET Council has been issued a government notice aimed at improving its financial standing.

The authority has been issued with a Best Value Notice – a formal letter which signals concerns with a situation, be it financial, organisational or otherwise.

Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) guidance says they are issued “where government becomes aware that an authority is exhibiting early indications of potential Best Value Failure” in a bid to “facilitate engagement with that authority and to obtain assurance of the steps it is taking to secure compliance with the Best Value Duty”.

The notice letter itself, signed by deputy director, local government stewardship and interventions at MHCLG, James Blythe, said it was “a formal notification that the department has concerns regarding your authority” and required “assurance of improvement”.

“We expect authorities that have been issued with a Best Value Notice to continue leading their own improvement,” it went on.

It outlines a number of steps the authority should take, including “urgent steps to improve financial sustainability”, “strengthen decision making, performance management, and organisational accountability”, and to “engage with the department on at least a quarterly basis to discuss progress”.

Council leader, Bill Revans, said: “We recognise the seriousness of today’s announcement and we accept the need to demonstrate continued improvement. We also want to give every assurance that the work needed is already under way and we are on the front foot. Residents should be reassured that Somerset Council remains responsible for making

decisions locally. Essential services will continue to be delivered and our commitment to improving services and achieving financial sustainability remains unchanged.

“This is a challenging moment, but not an unexpected one. We have been honest about the challenges we face, we have a clear plan, and we are taking the actions needed to secure Somerset’s future.

“Our focus now is on maintaining momentum, delivering improvement and demonstrating progress. We welcome the opportunity to demonstrate that progress to Government and to our residents, and this will help us access further advice and support. It is our aim to set a balanced budget in 2027-28 without the use of external exceptional financial support.

“But the challenges facing Somerset are complex. Demand and costs in essential services, particularly care services, have risen sharply, and the current funding system does not properly reflect the pressures faced by large rural councils. But we also recognise that we must continue to improve how we manage our finances, strengthen governance and transform services.

“Above all, our responsibility is to the people of Somerset. Our focus remains clear: protecting vital services, supporting the most vulnerable people in Somerset, doing everything we can to put the Council on a sustainable footing for the future, and ensuring Government understands how it needs to support local services.”

Somerset Council’s financial struggles are well documented and stretch back years.

In 2023, the authority declared a ‘financial emergency’ amid a large budget shortfall.

A report by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) issued earlier this year – commissioned

by the council itself – handed the authority a ‘one-star’ rating, the lowest available, and branded financial management “weak” after identifying a raft of concerns.

And in February, when confirming Exceptional Financial Support (EFS) of some £30 million from the government to help Somerset balance the books for the financial year, Local Government Minister Alison McGovern said she had “significant concerns” over the council’s financial position.

The Best Value Notice comes after the Liberal Democrat administration – when setting the budget this year – claimed the authority was in a “recovery phase” after previous financial struggles.

Responding to the news, Conservative leader at Somerset Council, Cllr Diogo Rodrigues, called it “damning”.

“Today’s decision by the Government to issue Somerset Council with a Best Value Notice is a damning verdict on the Liberal Democrat administration’s handling of the council’s finances after four years,” he said. “It follows four years of financial mismanagement that we have repeatedly warned about, poor delivery, poor responsibility, poor pace.

“Since becoming a unitary authority, the Liberal Democrats have declared a financial emergency but spent over £19 m on consultants, got rid of 500 job posts but splashed £40m on temporary and agency staff, received a one-star rating out of a possible five for financial management from CIPFA, lost £90m on poor property sales, and now finds itself subject to a Best Value Notice.

“Time and again, the Conservative Opposition has raised concerns about weak financial management, a lack of grip, poor governance and the failure to deliver the transformation the council promised. Rather than listening, the Liberal Democrat administration has too often dismissed legitimate concerns.

“And residents are paying more in council tax while seeing services deteriorate.

“This must be a turning point. The Liberal Democrat administration needs to stop making excuses, accept responsibility for where the council finds itself, and work with all councillors to restore sound financial management.

Cllr Leigh Redman, leader of the Labour group at Somerset Council, said: “The receipt of a Best Value Notice is clearly a serious matter for Somerset Council, and one that should be treated as an opportunity to demonstrate how we will continue strengthening the organisation and improving outcomes for our residents,” he said. “Local people rightly expect a council that is financially sustainable, well governed and focused on delivering effective services. The notice reflects concerns that need to be addressed, but it also provides a clear framework through which the council can demonstrate progress and improvement.

“Somerset has faced significant challenges in recent years, including local government reorganisation, ongoing financial pressures affecting councils across the country, and the complexity of transforming services while continuing to support residents. It is important that we acknowledge those challenges while remaining focused on the work needed to move forward."

Last orders on campaign to save pub

ACAMPAIGN which sought to purchase, refurbish and reopen a Somerset pub is over - after a planning inspector granted permission for the redevelopment of the site for housing.

The East Wells Community Benefit Society (EWCBS) had long campaigned to retain and reopen The Britannia Inn, in Bath Road, Wells, as a community pub, raising money through a shares option.

But earlier this month, an application by the Wellington Pub Company to develop five homes on the site was approved on appeal - after being rejected by Somerset Council.

Now, in light of the decision, EWCBS has announced it

intends to refund all money contributed by shareholders and donors - after it tried one more time to contact the owners of the site, without success.

"The society would like to thank the many individuals and organisations who have supported the project, and it will be writing to them all in due course," a spokesperson said.

"However, it would particularly like to thank Wells City Council and Somerset Council, who supported the project by granting the pub Community Asset status, and who consistently sought to preserve The Britannia Inn as an asset for future generations of the Wells community. Above all, the EWCBS would like to thank all its shareholders and

donors for their generosity, and the people of Wells and further afield who supported its

fundraising and publicity events or had volunteered to help in other ways."

Bridgwater mayor picks charity of the year

YOUNG Somerset is the chosen charity for this year’s Mayor of Bridgwater.

The organisation, which supports young people and their families in Bridgwater and across Somerset, has been selected by the mayor –Councillor Leigh Redman, pictured – to receive funds generated through the year.

Young Somerset is the county’s largest youth and community support charity, providing services such as mental health and wellbeing support, alternative education provision, youth work, employability programmes and

community-based support for young people facing a variety of challenges.

Cllr Redman said: “Young Somerset makes a real difference to the lives of young people and families across Bridgwater and Somerset. Every day they provide support, guidance and opportunities that help young people build confidence, overcome challenges and achieve their potential.

championing better outcomes for children and young people, I am proud to have chosen Young Somerset as my charity of the year.

“Their work reflects my belief that every young person deserves the best possible start in life and access to the support they need to thrive.

“I encourage residents, businesses, schools, community groups and organisations across Bridgwater to get involved and help us support this fantastic cause.”

Peter Elliott, head of partnerships and development at Young Somerset, said:

“As mayor, and as someone who has spent many years

“Throughout the year I look forward to working alongside the charity to raise awareness of its services and generate vital funds.

“Bridgwater has always been an important part of Young Somerset’s journey, and we are excited to be working with Bridgwater’s new mayor, Cllr Leigh Redman.”

The cause will see a range of fundraising and awarenessraising activities during the mayor’s year in office.

Tennis club submits plans for new pavilion

TENNIS players in Wells could soon be enjoying better facilities if plans for a replacement pavilion are approved.

NAPC Limited, on behalf of Wells Tennis Club, has applied for permission to replace the current pavilion at the Athletic Ground, in Rowdens Road, with a new building, including “improved ancillary accommodation”.

The proposed single-storey pavilion would feature a main clubroom or seating area, ancillary rooms, toilets and refreshment or kitchen facilities, measuring around 12.3m x 5.3m.

“The building would be constructed on ground screws, reducing the need for extensive excavation and limiting ground disturbance,” the application said.

“The replacement pavilion has been designed as a simple, robust and functional building

appropriate to its recreational setting.”

It said the redevelopment of a pavilion would “provide improved facilities for the existing tennis use”, allowing for the “day-to-day operation of the courts and for the continued growth and accessibility of tennis at the Athletic Ground”. It would improve shelter during poor weather, as well as

improving facilities for junior coaching and safeguarding, for visiting teams and spectators and improve accessibility and inclusivity.

“Without suitable ancillary facilities, the usability and inclusivity of sports provision is limited,” the plans went on.

“The replacement pavilion would therefore provide a clear improvement to an existing

community sports facility.”

Aside from the application, Wells Tennis Club has been fundraising to secure the new facilities, raising more than £100,000 for the project, with a target of £150,000.

Frome unites to say WE ARE NATURE!

SCORES of young people

– and their families –brought nature back to Frome town centre for a special event.

July 12 marked the final day of Frome Festival 2026, with children taking over the town centre for the WE ARE NATURE parade.

Sporting handmade animal masks created at a series of workshops with primary-age children at eight Frome schools led by artists Caroline Till and Kate Keara Pelen, the parade was a colourful culmination of a town-wide creative project which explored our existence alongside and as part of nature.

The parade set off from Bath Street, led by Cheryl Sprinkler of Mojo Moves, Mayor of Frome Mark Dorrington, artists Kate and Caro and an array of creatures and beasts made by local puppeteers and puppeteers from Bristol Experimental Puppet Festival.

It paused in the Market Place for a dance routine set to Katy Perry’s Roar, with the dancing and celebratory mood continuing through the Cattle Market to shade and refreshments in Welshmill Woods where an ‘after party’ with DJ Mother of Mankind, speeches by project co-creator

Caroline Till of Tilt Futures and Cllr Sara Butler took place, alongside a special performance by nature rapper, Nature Voices Raps.

Project co-creator Caroline Till said: “This project was all about reminding us we are living, breathing beings within a living, breathing planet – and isn’t that incredible.

“Kate and I started by delivering a special assembly and creative brief to all eight primary and first schools in Frome, talking with the children about our deep interconnectedness with nature – that we are part of it, not separate from it.

“We invited each child to step into the shoes of another species, seeing through their eyes to construct a wildlife mask to wear to the parade, so we could come together in one big celebration of creativity and nature.”

Among those taking part was six-year-old Eddie Stacey, who said: “I enjoyed making the masks because I liked folding the zigzag paper to make a lion. I loved joining in the dance and felt proud doing it.”

Cllr Sara Butler added: “What a gorgeous day – the mood was fantastic, the masks were beautiful and everyone had

such a great time. Many thanks to Caroline and Kate in particular and to everyone who came together to create masks, join the parade and make this such a memorable event.

“The hot weather we had on Sunday, and too often, is an unsettling reminder that our natural world needs us to do better – and unlike the wild animals represented by the masks, as humans we do have the power to change things.

“This event was a hopeful, inspiring, unifying way to share that message and provide an experience our young people will always remember.”

Parent Sarah Straussberg was also among those who processed through the town, and said it brought “a great sense of community, with children, families, schools and local

artists all involved”.

“Watching the parade today has been a real celebration of creativity, nature and everything that makes Frome such a special place,” she said.

The WE ARE NATURE Wildlife Parade was a partnership between Frome Town Council and Tilt Futures, working with artists Caroline Till and Kate Keara Pelen. Workshops took place at all primary-level Frome schools and at a series of community events.

Police apology after inquest rules Kelly Faiers was unlawfully killed in Minehead

KELLY Faiers was unlawfully killed at the Minehead home of convicted sex offender Richard Scatchard, an inquest ruled.

Ms Faiers, of Weston-superMare, was found dead at 70-year-old Scatchard’s home in October 2023 after he called police.

However, despite a criminal past which included drugging and sexually assaulting women, officers at the scene did not arrest Scatchard, who fled before being found dead in a Watchet caravan six months later.

Coroner Samantha Marsh recorded a verdict of unlawful killing in relation to 61-year-old Ms Faiers’ death.

The coroner told the hearing Scatchard would meet women on dating websites, which was the case with Ms Faiers, with he pair dating for around six months.

Marsh said Ms Faiers passed away as a result of taking sleeping pills and alcohol, and was found unresponsive in the morning of October 23, 2023.

“I do not believe he (Scatchard) intended her death to be the result,” she said. “He wanted to stupefy her so that he could have his way with her.”

The inquest also heard from police officers who said they wanted to arrest Scatchard on suspicion of murder, but were advised not to by duty sergeant.

A murder investigation was later launched, but Scatchard had fled his home when officers returned.

Responding to the inquest, Avon & Somerset Police issued an apology to Ms Faiers’ family, saying the force wished to “acknowledge several decisions” taken and how they “impacted her family”.

A statement from the force said Scatchard had “failed to disclose the pair were in a relationship, as per the licence

conditions put in place by the Probation Service, who were the lead agency for managing him in the community after his release from prison in 2013”.

“The coroner ruled there was no reasonable opportunity for the police or Probation Service to have established the pair were in a relationship prior to Ms Faiers’ death,” it went on.

“She was satisfied that had the relationship been known, then suitable action would have been taken to safeguard Ms Faiers.

“We have fully engaged with a multi-agency domestic homicide review in 2024, the Independent Office for Police Conduct’s (IOPC) investigation into complaints raised by Ms Faiers’ family, and this week’s coronial proceedings to ensure complete transparency around our actions.

“Those processes have led to us making changes over the past two and a half years, including increasing the number of specially-trained officers to help manage sex offenders, and introducing more training around unconscious bias and spotting the signs of false compliance.

“The circumstances around Ms Faiers’ death were initially considered non-suspicious, but police were called to attend by

the ambulance service, as is standard practice after a sudden death.

“Attending officers became concerned by Mr Scatchard’s behaviour and his comments about the quantity of sleeping tablets Ms Faiers had taken. They carried out a search on police systems and established he had previous convictions for sexual offences involving the administering of drugs.

“A detective decided Mr Scatchard should not be arrested after a paramedic’s initial opinion suggested the quantity of sleeping tablets Ms Faiers had taken would unlikely be the direct cause of her death.

“Instead, they felt it more appropriate for a statement to be taken and further enquires conducted, including a postmortem examination and toxicology reports. Attending officers did not agree with that decision.

“The following day it was decided Mr Scatchard should be arrested while those enquiries continued. Officers returned to

his flat but found he had disappeared. Extensive searches were carried out but he was found deceased in April 2024, six months after the last confirmed sighting of him alive.

“The inquest into his death determined there was no evidence to suggest police could have discovered him alive, following his disappearance.”

An IOPC investigation in 2025 found Avon & Somerset Police provided an “unacceptable” service by not immediately arresting Scatchard, “which we have accepted and apologised for”, the statement went on.

“The IOPC investigation found no evidence of misconduct by any officer or staff member or any organisational learning for Avon and Somerset Police,” it continued.

“Three officers involved in investigating Ms Faiers’ death have undertaken a reflective practice review process, which is overseen by an officer of a more senior rank and is designed to be challenging and a learning experience when an improvement need has been identified.

“Every day officers must demonstrate their professional judgement by making significant decisions under considerable pressure, often with only partial information and – as referenced by the coroner – without the benefit of hindsight.

“We welcome scrutiny of the actions we take and, importantly, any recommendations around how we can improve the way we protect and serve the public.

“We hope these inquests have provided Ms Faiers’ family with further clarity around what happened, and it is important to recognise the conclusion of these proceedings do not in any way reduce the pain they

Give ideas for murals -

and have a go yourself!

SUGGESTIONS for murals and other public art in Bridgwater will be up for discussion at a special event this week.

On Friday (July 24), residents are being invited to play a part in shaping the future of public art in Hamp at a Community Consultation event at the Recreation Community Hub.

They are being encouraged to go along to “share their ideas and help influence future mural projects across the area”, a Bridgwater Town Council spokesperson said.

Running from 10.30am to 2pm, the consultation will be centred around the theme, For the Community, By the Community, “ensuring residents’ voices are at the heart of the

creative process”.

“You will be able to meet the artist, take part in arts and have a go at spray painting,” the spokesperson went on.

“Organisers are keen to hear residents’ ideas, gather feedback and involve the community in developing artwork that reflects the character, history and aspirations of Hamp.”

The consultation will act as a precursor to Hamp Art Week, which takes place at the Recreation Community Hub from August 3 to 8, offering a range of art workshops, creative activities and community-led projects designed to inspire participation and celebrate local talent.

It will culminate in the unveiling of new artwork and a special gallery exhibition showcasing pieces created throughout the programme on August 8.

Among events planned is a series of sessions led by renowned graffiti artist Charley McFarley, who will work alongside participants to create vibrant and inspiring artwork for the community.

Sessions taking place on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday will be open to all, providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved – but spaces must be booked in advance as places are limited.

Councillor Liz Leavy said: “Hamp Art Week is a fantastic

opportunity for residents of all ages to come together, get creative and take pride in their community.

“The consultation event is an important chance for local people to have their say and help shape future mural projects, ensuring the artwork reflects the stories, identity and aspirations of those who live here.

“We are delighted to support an event that celebrates creativity, encourages community involvement and leaves a lasting legacy for Hamp.”

Friends group launched for village church

FUNDRAISING for a Somerset church has received a welcome boost after the formation of a new group.

Parishioners in Queen Camel and surrounds have joined together to form the Friends of St Barnabas Church in a bid to raise money to protect the landmark building.

"The Friends will support fundraising for the upkeep, maintenance and long-term future of St Barnabas, ensuring it remains open and welcoming for worship, baptisms, weddings,

funerals, community events and for future generations," a spokesperson said.

The charity will operate independently of the church itself, run by a separate board, although fund will only be spent on the fabric of the grade I-listed structure.

"Our first challenge is to raise funds to mend the roof," the spokesperson went on.

And they have started well on the quest to raise the required £200,000, with more than £5,000 already in the kitty

thanks to Friends' donations and a £164 donation from Emma's Cafe in the village, which donated 50p from each meal sold in June.

A range of events are already planned by the group, including

cream teas in the churchyard on August 31 and The Great Queen Camel Garage Sale on September 13, alongside many more.

St Barnabas Church was first recorded in 1291, but is understood to have been completed in five stages between 1380 and 1491, reaching a height of 96ft. People in the village and the surrounding area are being invited to join the Friends of St Barnabas, with details available at the church.

New chief appointed amid Government concerns over Somerset Council's finances

SOMERSET Council has appointed a new finance chief – as it faces more scrutiny over budgetary affairs.

The authority – which declared a financial emergency in 2023 but has since claimed it is in a ‘recovery phase’ – has announced the appointment of Lizzie Watkin as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and statutory Section 151 Officer.

Confirmation of the appointment came following approval by Full Council this week.

Ms Watkin joins Somerset Council after she was axed from Wiltshire Council, where she was corporate director of resources and Section 151 Officer.

However, the job was cut by Wiltshire chiefs in May, as the authority looked to save around £300,000 a year in salaries. In Somerset, Ms Watkin is set to earn between around £136,000

and £158,000 a year.

She will start on July 31, taking over from interim CFO Clive Heaphy, who is reportedly earning around £291,000 a year, working four days a week.

A Somerset Council spokesperson touted Ms Watkin’s “extensive experience of local government finance, organisational transformation, governance and strategic leadership”.

“Throughout her career, she has helped councils strengthen financial management, drive improvement and transformation, and deliver sustainable services for residents and communities,” they went on.

Previously, she worked for Somerset County Council as Strategic Finance Manager and Deputy Section 151 Officer, and has also worked at Taunton

Deane Borough Council and South Somerset District Council.

Her appointment comes at a difficult time for Somerset Council, which this week was handed a Best Value Notice by the Government – a warning over how Whitehall views the authority’s financial management.

“The Chief Financial Officer plays a critical statutory and strategic role in supporting that work by ensuring the proper administration of the council’s financial affairs and providing professional financial leadership across the organisation,” the spokesperson added.

Deputy leader of Somerset Council, Liz Leyshon, lead member for finance, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Lizzie back to Somerset. She brings significant experience, a strong track record of financial

leadership and a deep understanding of both Somerset and local government.

“As we continue to drive improvement, transformation and long-term financial sustainability, Lizzie’s expertise will be invaluable in helping us build on the progress already being made and ensuring we continue to deliver the best possible outcomes for residents.

“I would also like to thank Interim Chief Financial Officer and Section 151 Officer, Clive Heaphy, for his leadership, expertise and support over the past year.

“Since joining Somerset Council, Clive has provided vital financial leadership during a challenging period, helping to strengthen the Council’s financial management arrangements and supporting the organisation’s wider improvement and transformation work.”

Super-fast broadband for 4,000 properties

MORE than 4,000 South Somerset homes and businesses now have access to full fibre broadband as part of a multi-million pound countywide rollout.

Rural broadband specialist Wessex Internet and Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) have worked together to install high-speed connections in areas including Compton Dundon and Alford.

The network build started in May 2021, with an extra 1,100 properties added to the contract in June 2022, with Wessex Internet completing the roll out in January 2026.

Now, properties across rural parts of South Somerset can access a gigabit-capable broadband connection –including Quantock Wines and the Red Lion pub in Babcary.

And, as part of Wessex Internet’s Community Hubs initiative, 22 community organisations and charities in South Somerset are now connected with ultrafast full fibre broadband for just £1 per month.

Among those connected through the CDS-funded rollout by Wessex Internet are Jonathan and Anwen Hoskyns, who run the popular farm shop at North Perrott Fruit Farm.

Jonathan, a parish councillor, has long been involved in the village’s campaign for better

broadband, as North Perrott struggled with slow and unreliable internet for years.

“We were forever balancing our internet over two copper lines just to get something workable,” he said.

“I’d be on the phone to the provider once a month, sometimes more, trying to get it sorted. We’d been waiting for fibre for years. Wessex did the job 10 times quicker than anyone else and really got on with it.”

Fast, reliable broadband isn’t just helping the Hoskyns family run their rural business efficiently, but Jonathan said the improvement has also transformed life in the wider community.

“It’s been astonishing, the parish council used to be full of complaints about the internet, but those have completely disappeared,” he said.

“Underneath, there’s a whole new infrastructure, but on the surface, you wouldn’t even know it’s there. What you do notice is that everything just works.”

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s lead member for economic development, planning and assets, and a CDS board member, said: “Our thanks and congratulations go to Wessex Internet for their work in fulfilling this contract with

CDS. Delivering full fibre broadband in hard-to-reach areas is challenging in itself, but Wessex has had to contend with some awful weather extremes during the time they’ve been working on this contract in South Somerset.

“However, the importance of this work can’t be overstated, and it’s certainly been worth the effort that has been needed.

"The difference these full fibre connections make is highlighted by the experience of the owners of North Perrott Fruit Farm, and I’m sure that’s echoed by the thousands who have benefited from this new full fibre broadband network.”

Josh Goodchild, program manager for Somerset at Wessex Internet, added: “It is an extremely proud moment for Wessex Internet.

"As a team this project has been a challenge that we have relished and enjoyed completing, facing issues head on and with a determination seldom seen.

“From our planning team spearheading Wessex Internet’s introduction to landowners and communities; or our build teams working in extremely difficult conditions year-round, this contract was never going to be easy, but the team really strived to deliver full fibre broadband to all contracted premises.

“Fundamentally, Wessex

Internet and CDS share the same goal of ensuring that no community, business or individual household should be left behind due to poor connectivity, and that is why I believe this partnership worked.”

And Juliet Mance, chief operations officer of Wessex Internet, said: “Connecting more than 4,000 rural homes and businesses in South Somerset with reliable, gigabit capable broadband is a milestone that truly reflects the dedication of multiple teams across both organisations.

“Their hard work, resilience and commitment has delivered a project that is already transforming daily life for the communities we serve.

“Communities like Compton Dundon, Babcary and North Perrott have been waiting years for broadband that genuinely supports the way they live and work.

"Since the network has been live in South Somerset, the response from residents and local businesses shows just how quickly better connectivity can change daily life.

“Projects like this are exactly why CDS and Wessex Internet exist: to deliver future proof digital infrastructure that strengthens rural communities – because that’s the real measure of success.”

Wessex Internet has installed the new broadband connections as part of the Connecting Devon and Somerset programme

Better information for Weston bus users

BUS information services in Weston-super-Mare has been upgraded –giving travellers more accurate timing details.

The “major upgrade” by North Somerset Council (NSC) – thanks to central government funding – brings modern, real-time information (RTI) systems, giving people waiting at bus stops better data on exactly when their transport will be arriving.

NSC said the former system, delivered through legacy suppliers, had become increasingly unreliable, with passengers reporting inaccurate arrival times and “ghost buses” – services that appeared on displays but never arrived. Many of the existing displays were also more than 15 years old and unable to provide live service disruption information, they said.

The upgraded system has been delivered in partnership with Papercast, supplier of passenger information displays, commercial operator First Bus, and Ticketer, a supplier of automatic vehicle location (AVL), real-time information and ticketing solutions.

“Live AVL data, collected via Ticketer ticket machines within First Bus’ fleet, is layered with Ticketer’s new Enhanced Predictions feature – in a first of its kind rollout – to provide more accurate arrival predictions and faster updates during delays, diversions or cancellations,” an NSC spokesperson said.

“Information is automatically sent to the new low-energy e-inkdisplays, giving passengers reliable, up-to-date travel information while reducing the need for manual updates at bus stops.”

The new approach also saves money by removing the need for the council to operate its own prediction software, avoiding tens of thousands in annual software costs, they added.

The upgraded system went live last month with updated screens in Weston.

cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Reliable real-time information gives people confidence to choose the bus, so this is a significant improvement for passengers in Weston-super-Mare."

The improvements have been funded through central government bus service improvement plan funding.

Fatal crash appeal

POLICE are appealing for information after a person was killed in a crash near Bath – which also left a woman and a child in hospital.

The incident, on the A46 near Upper Swainswick, happened at around 3pm on July 11 and involved a white Dacia and a black Range Rover.

Three people from the Dacia were taken to hospital and the driver sadly passed away.

New car boot sale launching in Taunton

ANEW car boot sale is launching in Taunton next month.

On August 2, sale organiser Pauls Promotions will launch a Sunday afternoon ‘Late Riser’ event at Taunton Racecourse, with the first event.

The sale is set to run each Sunday afternoon, with organisers promising “an exciting new opportunity for buyers and sellers to enjoy a professionally managed car boot sale in a fantastic location”.

Subject to weather conditions, Pauls Promotions said it hopes to run the sale at the Corfe Road racecourse throughout the winter months, running from 1pm for sellers, and between 2pm and 4.30pm for buyers.

The company also runs the weekly Prockters Farm Car Boot Sale, which has been

operating since 2000, with the Taunton Racecourse event designed to complement - not replace - that sale.

“We want to reassure all of our loyal customers that Prockters Farm is very much here to stay,” said a Pauls Promotions spokesperson.

“The new Racecourse venue simply gives people the opportunity to enjoy a full day of car booting in Taunton, with a morning event at Prockters Farm followed by our new afternoon sale at Taunton Racecourse.”

Admission to the Taunton Racecourse Car Boot Sale will cost £1 per adult, with children going free. All selling vehicles will cost £8 on launch day.

The Prockters Farm Car Boot Sale opens to sellers from 9am, buyers from 10am until 1pm.

Goathurst heritage days

HISTORY enthusiasts and architecture admirers are being invited to visit Goathurst, near Bridgwater, in the upcoming Heritage Open Days event.

Halswell House is a magnificent example of English country house architecture with a history dating back to the 16th century

Originally built for the Halswell family, the estate has evolved through the centuries, showcasing Georgian and Victorian influences. The parkland surrounding the house features landscaped gardens and a collection of follies, including the charming Temple of Pan.

Heritage Open Days runs on Friday and Saturday, September 19-20, with Halswell Park and the church open from noon to 5pm, and the Temple of Pan from 2pm to 5pm.

THERE is an extra buzz at Glastonbury Abbey this week – after the arrival of a colony of honey bees.

The historic venue has welcomed the bees to four hives in the abbey orchard in a nod to a monastic tradition, with monks known to have kept bees for mead and medicine.

“The bees are already settling into their new home and exploring the grounds –including the specially planted pollinator plants provided by the Grounds team,” an abbey spokesperson said.

“We invited Stuart Gould of the Somerset Beekeepers Association (SBKA), alongside Eddie Duffy and Kristie Mynott from Tesco Glastonbury, which has generously funded a life-saving Emergency Anaphylaxis Kit from Kitt Medical, to visit the bees’ compound.”

another SBKA member and beekeeper who will be caring for the honey bees, Glastonbury Abbey grounds manager Mark King and facilities manager Anton Beagley, the group saw the Emergency Anaphylaxis Kit in place before observing the bees in their new home.

“The return of honey bees to the abbey reflects a medieval monastic tradition of beekeeping,” the spokesperson added.

“The monks of Glastonbury would have kept and tended to many beehives, making use of honey for mead and medicine, and beeswax for clean-burning candles essential for religious services.

“We would like to extend a big thank you to Tesco Glastonbury in the Community, Somerset Beekeepers Association and everyone who has made this project possible.”

MP calls for government backing for farmers to create and restore fire ponds

ASOMERSET MP is calling on the government to recognise the creation of 'fire ponds' on county farms as a key climate change adaptation measureand provide funding for their creation.

Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton) has called for the water resources to be funded through the Farming

Roadmap 2050.

The MP, who is the Liberal Democrats' rural affairs spokesperson, has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling for the move - as well as writing to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs urging Ministers to make fire pond creation and restoration an eligible, funded action within the roadmap.

Fire ponds provide a ready source of water for firefighting in rural areas where mains hydrants cannot reach, while also supporting irrigation and livestock during periods of drought.

The call comes after a spate of wildfires in Somerset in recent weeks amid soaring temperatures - expected to become more regular due to the impact of climate changeincluding near Ilminster earlier this month.

The Farming Roadmap sets out how farmers can adapt through nature-based solutions such as improved soil health and water management.

But Ms Dyke said wildfire resilience sits outside the framework, "treated as a separate problem from drought and water management rather

than a symptom of the same underlying pressure".

"Climate change is increasing the risk of extreme weather, from devastating flash floods to dangerous heat leading to wildfires, both of which Somerset has experienced in recent weeks," she added.

"Fire ponds offer a practical, low-cost solution that can help farmers adapt to climate change while providing our fire crews with vital access to water when every second counts.

"Wildfire resilience should not be treated as a separate issue from drought and flooding. These challenges are interconnected, and our approach to climate adaptation must reflect that.

"I am urging the Government to ensure fire ponds are properly recognised and funded as part of the Farming Roadmap 2050."

In her letter to Ministers, Ms Dyke called for dedicated funding for fire pond creation and restoration, better mapping of areas most at risk of wildfire working with the National Fire Chiefs Council, and greater monitoring of fire pond provision as part of the Government's wider climate adaptation plans.

MP Sarah Dyke, inset, has called for action to help support the creation of fire ponds in Somerset, particularly after recent incidents, above

Thousands set for treatment at new dentist

ANEW dental practice which prompted thousands of people to express an interest in signing up has officially opened in Crewkerne.

Crewkerne Dental Care, commissioned by NHS Somerset and run by Dentistry For You, has already seen hundreds of patients since opening in May, but was officially opened at a special event on July 13.

When the new facility was announced, more than 4,500 people – about 75% of whom come from the Crewkerne area – used an online portal and phone number to express an interest in treatment.

The team is now seeing and treating that initial group before reopening the portal, and the practice is not accepting in-person registrations at present.

MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) joined Dr Esmail Harunani, partner at Dentistry For You, and Jonathan Higman, chief executive at NHS Somerset, to cut the ribbon to formally open the practice.

Dentistry For You group manager, Elizabeth Fernandez, said: “Our team has enjoyed getting to know our patients

since we opened our doors in May and people have been very welcoming.

“Patients have been very positive about having the practice on their doorstep too.

“We hope to be able to reopen the opportunity for

constituency in recent months, following the opening of the new practice in Chard. These new services will make a real difference to thousands of people who have struggled to access NHS dentistry.

people to express an interest in NHS care here in due course.”

The Crewkerne venue is the third new NHS dental practice commissioned by NHS Somerset to open its doors since October 2025, after openings in Wellington and Chard. Together, they are expected to provide care for up to 20,000 people each year.

MP Mr Dance said: “It was a pleasure to officially open Crewkerne Dental Care and see first-hand the difference it is already making for local people.

“This is the second new NHS dental practice to open in my

“I want to thank Dentistry For You, NHS Somerset and everyone involved in making this happen. It shows what can be achieved when organisations work together to improve local services.

“While this is a significant step forward, we know there is still much more to do. Too many people are still unable to access an NHS dentist, which is why I will continue pressing for the long-term reforms and investment needed to make NHS dentistry work for everyone.”

Recent figures show that NHS dentistry in the county is on the up – during 2025/26, dental teams across the county’s 52 NHS practices provided roughly 10,000 more NHS treatments than they did the previous year, halting years of

declining NHS activity since the pandemic.

Jonathan Higman, chief executive of the new integrated care board (ICB) cluster covering Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset, added: “It’s great to see Crewkerne Dental Care up and running –it’s already making a big difference to local people.

“The three new practices are part of our recovery plan, which is delivering better access to NHS dentistry – something that is hugely important to people in Somerset.

“There is more to do, and I will make sure it remains a key priority for our Somerset team.”

Crewkerne was chosen for the new practice as one of the areas of the county where more NHS appointments are most needed.

NHS Somerset is commissioning 15,500 ‘units of dental activity’ (UDAs) per year from the practice. Under national NHS rules, UDAs are used to pay high street dentists, which are independent private businesses.

Anyone needing emergency or urgent dental care can call NHS 111 or visit NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk.
